In the United States, work is a central dimension of adult life and a critical site through which we articulate who we are and who we want to be. Recent economic trends indicate that the middle class is shrinking, bottle-necking more working people into the burgeoning informal economy marked by lower-wages, at-will employment, few benefits, and the loss of collective bargaining rights. This study examines how men and women workers in the informal economy negotiate a sense of self within and through the structures that shape their working lives. Using standpoint theory and institutional ethnographic methodologies, this study explores identity negotiation processes and outcomes through interviews with 40 New Orleans-area bartenders. A comparative analysis between men and women bartenders identifies the rebel worker as an affirmative and self-made occupational identity formed in relationship to structures that produce vulnerability and instability. Identity negotiations among men and among women reveal that ascriptive statuses play a critical role in how work is experienced and navigated—rebel barkeeps and rebel barmaids are the gendered manifestations of workplace self-development projects that are formed in relationship to broader gender hegemonies. Finally, this study analyzes the impact of the rebel worker identity on the non-working lives of bartenders across and within gender statuses to map how the structures that shape our working selves are refracted and implicated within the intimate, non-working dimensions of bartenders’ lives, particularly in bartenders’ negotiations with family life. This study finds that the development of self-made identities is negotiated in relationship to relations of ruling that produce marginalizing effects in bartenders’ lives. The individualization of marginalization results in participants internalizing the outcomes of marginality rather than localizing and politicizing the outcomes of informal economies within broader relations of ruling. Moreover, identity projects through work are not only gendered, but play a central role in workers’ considerations of their opportunity structures beyond the workplace. As the informal economy continues to grow, the entrenchment of instability and vulnerability could play a central role in who Americans think they are and what they believe is possible for their futures.

▼ Developmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
constitute a growing part of the associational landscape in the
Global South, sparking debates about their contributions to
development and democracy. This study argues that in order to
evaluate the role of developmental NGOs, one must view them through
their participants’ eyes and recognize the variety that exists
within the developmental NGO sector. As a way of doing so, this
project analyzes the causes and consequences of women’s
participation in two microcredit NGOs in Guatemala – one that is
foreign founded, foreign managed, and foreign funded, and one that
is also foreign funded but locally founded and managed. It draws on
comparative organizational analysis and in-depth political
ethnography conducted over the course of three years, and shows
that women’s decisions and experiences of participation vary across
NGOs, within NGOs, and over time. It therefore demonstrates that
participation is a dynamic process that unfolds over time and in a
particular context. Its findings highlight the role of three key
organizational attributes – internal structure, institutional
location, and underlying philosophies of development and
participation – in shaping women’s experiences and decisions of
participation, which in turn affect the consequences of
participation. By demonstrating the advantage of bringing
longitudinal data and organizational sociology to bear on the study
of NGOs, this study calls for scholars to get inside NGOs. By
showing that different types of associations serve different
functions, it suggests that the ideal situation is one in which the
associational landscape is not only dense, but also
diverse.

▼ This dissertation is about changing perspectives on
marriage, family relations, and work life among older Italian women
in their mid fifties to late sixties. These women came of age in
the post World War II era, a period of great economic, social, and
statutory transformation in Italy. The watershed of changes brought
forth by the economic boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s, as
well as the feminist movement of the 1970s, opened unforeseen
educational and work opportunities for women. These changes also
raised questions about the fundamental organization of Italian
society where the home, that is the family, is the primary source
of social and economic support, and women are its foundation.
Fieldwork consisted of repeated 2-3 month visits to my field site,
Rome, for a total of 9 months of research where I participated in
the daily lives of two groups of women from disparate socioeconomic
backgrounds. Each group consisted of approximately 20-30 women. I
conducted twelve life history interviews with six women from each
group. In this study, I primarily use the life experiences of three
women to examine the extent to which the social developments, and
legal reforms, of that period succeeded in altering social and
cultural values, and how they continue to intersect with women’s
everyday lives. Their narratives illustrate how the position of
Italian women is simultaneously evolving, yet remains consistent,
as it intersects with wider structural changes. Today, these women
continue to negotiate changing social patterns regarding family
life, work life, and post-retirement aspirations amid a long-term
economic crisis, a demographic reality characterized by long life
and low fertility, and against an undercurrent of male privilege
that has had detrimental repercussions for women and Italian
society. Even as the structure of the Italian family conforms to
accommodate evolving patterns of family formation, as well as life
course expectations, the ideal of the woman as the primary provider
of care remains unfalteringly stable. The reasons for this are a
complex interweaving of familial, social, institutional, and statal
factors that also intersect with deep-seated biases regarding
gender.

▼ The patriarchal Italian father surrounded by his many
bambini hardly exists anymore in today's Italy. Although
stereotyped as proud of their traditions and ingrained in their
ways, Italians have adjusted with seeming ease to both contemporary
low birthrates and diminishing patriarchy. In fact, Italy had one
of the lowest birthrates in the world in the 1990s, plunging to
hitherto unforeseen low levels. Over a decade of research into
demographic behavior in Italy, and the rest of Europe, has led to a
number of theories seeking to account for very low fertility.
Surprisingly few studies, however, have looked at the ways that
assumptions about
gender affect European demographic patterns. Even
fewer have explored the changing nature of male identity and
heterosexual masculinity. This dissertation aims to understand, on
the one hand, the underlying factors shaping Italian male identity,
masculinity, and gendered modes of interaction in Padua, Italy and
how these, in turn, influence demographic outcomes such as
fertility rates. On the other hand, a critical anthropological
analysis of broad Italian demographic patterns provides an
enlightening window onto the particular facets of contemporary
Italian masculinity. I find that while men and masculinities are
increasingly talked about and have become the
subject of highly
ideologically charged public debate, it is paradoxically much less
clear what manhood consists of or how men should behave. With ever
more women in the labor force and new family policies, Italian men
have been obliged to rethink partnerships, fatherhood and even male
identity. Emergent models of affective men willing to share
domestic labor and childcare seem to encourage higher fertility
outcomes. Yet new forms of masculinity are embedded within the
particular socio-cultural context of Italy, where we find the
peculiar combination of rejection of a patriarchal
gender order and
the continued and even enhanced commitment to the "strong Italian
family." This study broadens scholarly discussions of gendered
understandings of men and masculinity, demographic theories of low
fertility in Italy and Southern Europe, and the links between the
two.

▼ This dissertation enriches our understanding of
gender
and religion in the African Muslim world. I illuminate this
intertwining of
gender and religion by investigating how Swahili
women and men navigate the processes of marriage and divorce and
address their
gender specific needs, concerns, and aspirations in a
Tanzanian coastal community, Peponi. Inspired by recent studies on
the personal experience of Muslim women I particularize Swahili
women and men's understanding of Islam as it relates to their
marital choices and divorce experiences. Swahili marriage has long
been characterized by serial monogamy, men's aspirations for
polygyny, and high levels of divorce. Despite all this, marriage
remains the most valued institution among Swahili Muslims. Islam
forms an essential axis on which everyday activities,
communications, and transactions in Peponi turn. For the Swahili,
marriage and religion are intricately linked, for they see marriage
as a moral institution that reflects Muslim values. While this
might be an ideal Swahili people aspire to, it does not adequately
describe marital life in practice. Men and women have dramatically
different, gendered, expectations of their life course in terms of
relationships and they invoke different discourses when discussing
their expectations of marriage. The multiple meanings surrounding
the practices and interpretations of Islam as well as those
surrounding modern African love are vital to understanding the ties
between women and men's motivations, values, and goals associated
with these demographic processes. The general assumption is that
men have all the power within marriage, but by listening to
individual men, women, and couples I gained a more substantial
insight into the gendered role and experience of Islam in analyzing
the processes of marriage and divorce. I conclude that women
navigate marriage and divorce in ways that challenge the assumed
privilege that Muslim men have, with more ease and agency than
previously imagined. I find that Swahili women have new
opportunities today and this has a tremendous impact on women's
independence and choice to delay (re)marriage, sometimes
indefinitely.

▼ This study explores the historical lack of an
affirmative discourse of matrimonial sexuality in Russian Orthodoxy
and religious thought. The study makes the case that this lack
arose from the Church’s linkage of Russian Christianity, sexual
purity, and Russian cultural exceptionalism and the corresponding
linkage of sexual pleasure with religious and cultural otherness.
It argues that an underdeveloped discourse of sexuality continues
to impact religious practice, social policy, and
gender relations
in Russia to this day. It also locates a fledgling positive
discourse of matrimonial sexuality at the turn of the 20th century
in discussions among clergy, theologians, and lay religious
thinkers based on concerns around low birthrates, divorce, and the
decline of the Russian family, which remain at the forefront of
contemporary Russian social discourse. It focuses on one of the
leading voices in these discussions, Vasily V. Rozanov (1856-1919).
The author of the first systematic exploration of the religious,
cultural, and civic dimensions of matrimonial sexuality in Russian
thought, The Family Question in Russia (1903), Rozanov argued that
sexual pleasure was vital to the sanctity and survival of Christian
matrimony and challenged the historical conflation of affirmative
sexuality and “the other”, proposing instead an essential Russian
predisposition to a sanctified and fruitful conjugal life. In three
components, this study traces the evolution of the Russian Orthodox
discourse of conjugal sexuality from medieval didactic texts and
canon law through Muscovite and Imperial matrimonial law,
culminating in a close reading of the 19th-20th century
re-evaluation of Orthodox marriage in ecclesiastical and lay
journals, books, and public meetings, particularly in engagement
with Rozanov. Finally, the study explores post-Soviet pronatalist
discourse, which is heavily contingent upon the notions of both
sexual purity and reproductive fecundity as essential Russian
traits. In this discourse one locates a renewed engagement with
V.V. Rozanov’s thought as agents of the Church and State seek to
revitalize the Russian family by appealing to cultural notions of
exceptionalism. In a larger perspective, this study demonstrates
the importance of reevaluating the history of sexuality in Russia
for understanding the conflicts around religion, marriage, and
reproduction in the post-Soviet space.

importance in early modern England. It mattered because of the need
to produce heirs for families that had property and to create more
working hands in families where labor was necessary for survival.
In less practical terms, childbirth was also understood as one of
the main justifications for marriage and as an essential component
of the fulfillment of
gender roles for both married women and
married men. Because reproduction was so important in this society,
infertility – the failure to reproduce – created a crisis. It was a
personal and emotional crisis for the couple involved. It was also
a medical crisis, one which was discussed at length in popular
gynecological manuals and for which women sought treatment
primarily among their experienced peers, but also from physicians
and other medical practitioners. It was a crisis of
gender ideals,
inviting mockery and satire of the femininity of barren women and
the masculinity of childless men. Finally, it was a religious
crisis, because infertility could be seen as a punishment of sins
or as a test of faith.
This dissertation focuses on the experience of infertility
and reproductive disorders in England in the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries and examines this topic not only from a
medical perspective but also from its cultural, gendered and
emotional dimensions. It explores fertility problems defined
broadly to include difficulties in conception, miscarriages and
stillbirths. The study offers a comprehensive view of how infertile
couples understood their condition, gave meaning to it, and
ultimately sought to treat it. The dissertation also uses
infertility as a lens through which to explore broader issues in
early modern English culture. It examines how medical views of the
bodies influenced ideas of morality, explores how women and
physicians negotiated matters of expertise relating to the
reproductive body, looks at women's communities and mutual support
networks and discusses the impact of the Reformation on therapeutic
practices.

▼ Despite claims that we have arrived at a post-race
era, many signs indicate that Americans are as invested in racial
difference as ever. In recent years, this inconsistency has focused
largely on the material body. At the same time that we are being
told that our first African American president embodies the
transcendence of older, divisive categories of race, Henry Louis
Gates, Jr.’s website, AfricanDNA, is selling YDNA and mtDNA tests
that purportedly trace African American customers’ roots “back to
Africa.”
The foundational argument of this dissertation is that
literature offers another perspective onto these historical
incongruities that the cultural conversations, largely limited by
their allegiance to a black/white racial binary or the experiences
of men, have often overlooked. This dissertation turns to four
contemporary ethnic American novels that respond to the pressures
of these contradictions by grappling with and reconfiguring earlier
notions of the body as a vessel of genetically transmitted ethnic
difference: Danzy Senna’s Caucasia (1998), Myla Goldberg’s Bee
Season (2000), Susan Choi’s American Woman (2003), and Ruth Ozeki’s
All Over Creation (2003). Despite their diverse, sometimes opposing
stances, the four novels have in common two strategies that
demonstrate the contemporary salience of returning to earlier
notions of the ethnic body: first, their nuanced accounts of the
physiological, day-to-day processes of navigating and articulating
identity that are particular to the bodies of female subjects; and
second, their depiction of biological father-daughter
relationships.
While much of poststructuralist scholarship has tended to
elevate hybrid, illegible identities as a panacea to essentialism,
these writers are constructing a new politics of identity by
recasting corporeal, ethnic “essence” as politically relevant and
even progressive. My project creates an alternative paradigm to
illuminate these writers’ engagement with the ethnically legible
body and thereby demonstrates how these novels reconfigure ethnic
female agency and feminism for the twenty-first century.

▼ This dissertation explores new gendered subjectivities
that emerge as women negotiate tensions between "personal" and
Russian neo-traditionalist national agendas. It is based on an
ethnographic analysis of Russian entrepreneurial women's
engagements with neo-liberal notions of self-reliance in corporate
Russia, and essentialist
gender politics. To educated Russian women
in various generational groups, business represents compelling
possibilities for self-realization and upward socioeconomic
mobility. Yet in pursuing entrepreneurial careers, women must
forcefully engage with a proliferation of policies, media, and
popular attitudes since the mid-1980s, which encourage Russian
professional women to focus their attentions on homemaking and
childrearing. Women take part in intensive processes of
self-reflection and legitimization in multiple contexts:
motivational seminars run by transnational companies and their
Russian offshoots, discussions of self-help literature on the
Internet and with their colleagues, their own development and
marketing of self-help services, and narrative strategies that draw
on their own (and their mothers') socialist pasts as enterprise
managers, komsomol leaders, and heads of families. An analysis of
women's work lives and parallel processes of self-development
pushes understandings of urban social life and change beyond the
older activist language of solidarity and collaboration. Women's
ideas of selfhood celebrate ephemeral exchanges as opposed to more
stable relationships or group affiliations, as meaningful sites of
social interaction. In their engagements with neo-liberal
paradigms, women appropriate normatively "male" idioms of
self-reliance and link them with their own abilities to make social
contributions as businesswomen. In doing so, they infuse
neo-liberal ideas of autonomous personhood with moral worth. This
dissertation illustrates how business can be a site of social
production and change under increasingly centralized national
governments. It is a context within which people articulate more
expansive definitions of
gender and personhood than exist in
conventional nationalist portrayals.

▼ This thesis is comprised of three chapters. In the
first paper we analyze how low skill rural-urban migration in
Brazil from 1986 to 2000 led to an increase in the labor supply of
high skill women living in urban areas. In our model we show how
large inflows of low skill women migrants decrease the relative
price of domestic services. The largest beneficiaries of this trend
are high skill women, who respond to the decrease in the cost of
domestic services by joining the labor force and working more
hours. We use Census data from Brazil from 1991 and 2000 to test
this hypothesis. Using weather shocks in rural areas, and
historical patterns of migrations, we are able to build an
exogenous migration shock by skill to cities. Using this as an
instrument for the price of domestic services and local wages we
find that a 10% decrease in the wage of domestic workers increases
the labor participation of high skill women by 3%. In the second
chapter we use data from Brazilian Census for 1980 to 2000 to
estimate the elasticity of substitution between high and low skill
workers. We instrument for the change in the ratio of high to low
skill workers, with rural-urban migrants (driven by rainfall shocks
in rural areas). Finally, in our simulations show that the increase
in the labor supply of high skilled workers explains most of the
decrease in the skill wage gap. Finally in chapter three, using
survey data on fishermen and fishing villages in Aceh, Indonesia
from 2005 and 2007, we examine the effect of the December 2004
tsunami and resulting massive aid effort on local public good
provision, in particular on public labor inputs, but also public
capital choices. Also analyzed are the roles of and changes in
local social and political institutions and participation in
political and social activities.

South":
Gender and the Southern Interracial Network, 1919-1949, by
Caroline C. Cortina, Ph.D., Brown University, May 2011.Drawing on
correspondence, oral histories and published sources, this
dissertation examines the network of middle-class blacks and whites
who worked together to improve southern race relations from 1919 to
1949. The dissertation argues that their relationships, strategies
for confronting racial inequality and shifting goals were shaped by
often conflicting ideas about
gender and racial identity. The
Commission on Interracial Cooperation, an organization formed in
1919 in response to growing concern over racial violence, best
articulated the interracial ideal: that southerners could forge
bonds of cooperation based on shared ideas of masculine and
feminine class identity and Christian duty and that these bonds
could provide a model for racial cooperation. The reality of how
blacks and whites worked together, however, rarely fit this ideal
as they struggled to find common ground amidst the increasing
challenges of more radical reform efforts.

▼ This paper discusses the gender roles in a dairy value. It builds from an assumption that women
are confined in the lower levels of the value chain where daily routine work is performed and no
income is realized at these levels while men are mostly involved in the higher levels where
income is generated for example in the sale of milk. A part from being confined in the levels
that do not generate income, women are also not allowed to share equally in the proceeds despite
their active involvement in most of the activities along the dairy value chain. This is because
their contribution is not visible by the other stakeholders in the industry. From the research, there
is evidence that women are being recognized as equal players and their roles being recognized.
Women are now engaged in activities that generate income like selling of milk.
The paper also looks at how the society looks at the various activities along the dairy value chain
in terms of cultural beliefs, taboos and other restrictions and how these beliefs impact on the
gender roles in a dairy value chain. Research showed that there are some men who do not do
certain activities because it is a taboo in their culture. Others felt that some jobs are demeaning
and therefore, not fit for them.
In terms of decision making, women are actively involved since they are in joint ownership of
property with their husbands. This is an improvement from what was previously known where
women were seen as property custodians and not owners.
The paper makes a conclusion that women’s roles in the society are being recognized and
appreciated and suggests that more opportunities and resources should be given to women to
achieve gender equity in a dairy value chain.

le canal de la communication et comment contrôlent-ils les
témoignages transmis par leur environnement social? Les recherches
expérimentales de notre thèse de doctorat visent, d’une part, à
mettre en évidence que, si le canal communicationnel constitue un
moyen rapide et efficace d’augmenter leur stock de connaissances,
les enfants sont pourtant peu enclins à considérer comme vraie une
représentation qui leur est communiquée si celle-ci entre en
conflit avec leur propre perception ou avec des connaissances
préalablement stockées en mémoire. D’autre part, nos recherches
empiriques ont l’originalité d’examiner le développement de la
confiance épistémique sélective lorsque les enfants ne peuvent
comparer l’information transmise avec leur propre background
informationnel. Se basent-ils, dans ces conditions, sur des indices
de nature sociale pour attribuer leur confiance? Si nos recherches
empiriques se focalisent sur le développement de la confiance
épistémique chez les enfants, un travail théorique propose en
préambule une perspective <i>intégrée</i> de la
confiance épistémique, avec l’hypothèse que différents types de
mécanismes, tant de « bas niveau », suggérant un traitement
quasi-automatique et très élémentaire de l’information, que de «
haut niveau », soit plutôt réflexifs, participent aux prises de
décisions fiduciaires. La confiance épistémique est ensuite
discutée à la lumière du contexte de l’évolution de la
communication, puis un état de l’art de la littérature spécialisée
met en évidence comment et à quel moment les mécanismes de
sélection des informations, définis en termes de mécanismes de
<i>vigilance épistémique</i>, se développent chez les
enfants. Notre partie empirique se destine à poursuivre ces
travaux. Une première étude examine si <i>l’âge</i> de
la source influence la confiance que va attribuer l’enfant pour
acquérir une nouvelle information et dans quelle mesure cette
attribution évolue entre l’âge de 2.5 et 5 ans. Un conflit entre
l’indice de l’âge et de la fiabilité de la source est ensuite
introduit, afin d’examiner si les préférences basées sur une même
appartenance sociale sont robustes lorsque l’informateur similaire
est étiqueté préalablement comme non fiable. Une deuxième étude
examine ensuite l’influence de l'indice du
<i>genre</i>, avec les mêmes questionnements
sous‐jacents. Les résultats des deux études mettent en évidence que
les enfants utilisent l’âge et le genre de la source lorsqu’ils ne
disposent pas d’informations soulignant une différence de fiabilité
entre celles-ci. Toutefois, ces indices ne sont pas utilisés
systématiquement et leur utilisation diffère chez les enfants de 3,
4 ou 5 ans. En revanche, leurs résultats sont plus homogènes
lorsqu’ils reçoivent des informations indiquant que la source à
l’âge ou au genre similaire n’a pas eu d’accès informationnel. Dans
ce cas, les enfants rejettent très clairement son témoignage autour
de l’âge de 40 mois. Les enfants en-dessous de cet âge prennent
également en compte…

▼ Adopting a critical feminist approach, this study examines facilitators of and inhibitors to Vietnamese female academics’ advancement. Vietnamese women are considered to have greater freedom than their counterparts in other Asian countries, and Confucianism is often viewed as the main contributor to the persistence of conventional gender roles and norms (Èzbilgin & Syed, 2010; Turley, 1972; United Nations, 2002; A. N. Vo & Harvey, 2009; World Bank, 2011). Publications by the current government also suggest that Vietnamese women enjoy a number of rights and privileges accorded by the communist state. The present study, however, brings to light a more nuanced set of factors impacting women’s place in Vietnamese professional life. To some extent, the findings echo the themes commonly found in the literature regarding the underrepresentation of female academics in senior positions worldwide, including family constraints in terms of unequal share of housework and care work, patriarchal organisational culture, sexist assumptions underlying performance appraisal expectations, and overt sexism. Yet the study found a number of historical, cultural, and political factors that are peculiar to the Vietnamese context. These include propaganda by the communist government portraying women’s roles as ideal domestic worker and carer, so-called benevolent sexism, promotion and retirement policies in higher education, the particular Vietnamese expectations of motherhood including the sociocultural context of Vietnamese mothers’ obsession with children’s education, Vietnamese ‘village culture’, and stressors associated with familial harmony given these expectations.
The interaction of these factors has created formidable barriers to Vietnamese women’s career aspirations and their progression to the upper ranks in academia. These findings demonstrate the need for formal interventions at the organisational level, improvements in education with regard to curriculum, textbooks, the teaching profession, and career counselling, dismantling the patriarchal laws and policies, more effective enforcement of regulations that promote gender equality, less distorted media representation of women, and the introduction of women’s support groups and developmental programs.
The study makes several contributions to the literature of an under-researched area. This study is among the first attempts to challenge the claim that Vietnamese women have enjoyed greater freedom and equality compared to their counterparts in other Asian nations. In addition, it provides an important insight into the impact of Communism on gender issues in Vietnam, which has often been overlooked in previous studies. It also discusses the challenges of applying some major, Western feminist epistemologies to the Vietnamese context, as well as investigating both the hostile and benevolent forms of sexism embedded in Vietnam’s legislative framework, printed texts and organisational practices. ▼ The Namibian government has taken cognisance of the importance of mainstreaming gender at the institutional level. In efforts to promote gender mainstreaming, its cabinet directed all government offices, ministries and agencies (OMAs) to comply with the Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB) initiative, in 2014. The implementation of the GRB initiative requires all OMAs to have Gender Focal Point Persons (GFPPs) in all government institutions, specifically responsible for ensuring that gender issues are mainstreamed in all relevant activities, programmes, plans and policies. This study investigated the challenges and successes experienced by the GFPPs in Namibia, since they have not yet been documented. It also evaluated the extent to which the GRB initiative is being implemented in selected ministries which are: Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare (MGECW); Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (MEAC); Ministry of Health and Social Services (MHSS); Ministry of Safety and Security (MoSS) -Namibian Police; Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture (MYSC); and Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF). Government institutes continue to be a significant interest in that they reproduce and contribute to the shaping of woman lives. Additionally, the government has a great influence in the challenges and success that GFPP are experiencing. The study adopted an epistemological philosophy which concerns with the theory of knowledge in understanding the experiences of GFPP, with a keen interest in interpretative philosophy. Qualitative research design was employed in this study, for which data were gathered through interviews and from 6 selected government ministries. This approach provided an in-depth approach in exploring the challenges and successes of GFPP. analysed using thematic analysis. A set of semi-structured interview guides was administered to the GFPPs. The study applied the concept of governmentality that was introduced by Foucault in the 20th century.
The study revealed that the main challenge affecting the implementation of the GRB initiative or any other gender related initiative was lack of financial resources. Although the GRB initiative is being implemented in some ministries such as MGECW and Ministry of Defence (MOD), the extent is limited, particularly due to limited funding and continuous budget cuts. As part of the identified successes, many ministries have been commended for mainstreaming gender issues in their plans, programmes and activities. Thus far, the MOD has established a gender division; other ministries such as MESC and MSSS have developed gender strategies, action plans and policies; while others are supporting important gender activities, sometimes with external support in terms of funding. Of all the ministries, the MOD has been applauded for establishing a gender division, and for that reason it has a special budget vote within the national budget. ▼ Against a background of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) promoting gender equality as a key component for addressing poverty and enhancing human development, this study presents findings on the extent to which selected NGOs in Lusaka have mainstreamed gender. The purpose of the study was to investigate how NGOs had mainstreamed gender through policy formulation, programme implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Fifteen organisations were selected through a non-probability sampling technique from a population sample of twenty two organisations registered as members of the Non-Governmental Organisation Coordinating Committee, for the period 2008-2009. Questionnaires were administered to Programme Officers and in-depth interviews conducted for Programme Managers. Secondary data was collected to compliment the primary data through the review of organisations' strategic documents. Data was coded and analysed based on emerging trends, whilst recorded responses were manually transcribed, using grid analysis to capture respondents' verbatim. The findings of the study revealed that despite the efforts by NGOs to address gender inequality, gender mainstreaming has been effectively implemented. This is largely attributed to the approach taken by the organisations to focus mainly on women as beneficiaries, at the expense of men. There is an absence of gender analysis to inform policies and programmes. Most organisations have not prioritised gender policies and development of indicators to monitor the outcome of their interventions. Mechanisms for gender accountability are not in place, as evidenced in the absence of gender focal persons. Resource allocation for gender mainstreaming activities is very low. The capacity of NGOs to effectively mainstream gender is also hampered by the lack of leadership at national level to drive the agenda for a coordinated mechanism. To a considerable extent, Non-Governmental Organisations have displayed a willingness to bridge the gap between women and men resulting from the adoption of the Beijing Platform of Action in the 1990s, however gender mainstreaming within the organisations still requires more efforts.

▼ The question of gender, specifically gender identity, is prominent in today’s society. It is highly debated and through the development of queer theory it is gaining more academic recognition. However, there is a gap regarding representation of the gender-queer identity of one contemporary poet, Andrea Gibson. Gibson provides a much needed perspective and voice in society and scholarly debates. This is why this essay uses queer theory along with Kate Bornstein and Judith Butler to examine three poems by Gibson, “Swing-Set, “The Jewelry Store” and “A Genderful Pep-Talk for my Younger Self”. The essay analyses the ways Gibson, through poetry, formulates a gender-queer identity and thus questions the generic gender binary system.

▼ The current study focuses on theory, data and analyses from the Forum BEVI Project (www.ibavi.org/content/featured-projects/), a national learning assessment initiative, with a particular emphasis on the “
Gender Traditionalism” scale from the Beliefs, Events and Values Inventory (BEVI). Because
Gender Traditionalism is central to Equilintegration Theory (EI Theory), the EI Self and the Beliefs Events and Values Inventory (BEVI), issues of definition, measurement and theory are considered with respect to this model, framework and method along with an examination of data and analyses from the BEVI, which are relevant to a deeper understanding of this construct. Results suggest that the EI model and BEVI method are highly resonant with extant literature and help to further our understanding of the predictors and outcomes of the “gendered self.” For example, the BEVI may demonstrate that certain formative variables (e.g., such as socioeconomic status and parental education level) impact the development of traditional
gender beliefs, and that the relative degree to which one endorses
gender traditionalism is correlated with other belief structures (e.g., concern about the environment) as well as specific outcomes (e.g., attunement to one’s own emotional experience and the emotional experiences of others). Additionally, implications of this theoretical model and assessment method for the facilitation of better understanding and relations within and between the genders also are offered.

▼ This paper looks at French literature that defies binary and heteronormative gender roles and identities. The literature spans from the seventeenth- to the nineteenth-century. My goal is not only to bring these pieces of literature to light, proving that non-binary genders have existed long before the recent liberal LGBTQIA+ movement, but also to help modernize these identities from the past. In doing this, I aim to explain that contemporary gender identities are not new, but timeless. The experiences seen in this literature are strikingly similar to how people experience gender today. As a result, I hope that readers will be more accepting of contemporary gender identities. I dream of the day where we focus less on our differences and more on our own free expressions.

▼ This dissertation is a study of the prospects and challenges of gender mainstreaming in water sector policies or policies that have influenced operations of the MEWD/DWA mainly the Gender Policy (2000) and the National Water Policies (1994 and 2010) and their implications for gender actions to be undertaken by the Ministry of Energy and Water Development. The actions on gender will have an implication on the composition of the ministry in terms of gender and either promote sensitivity to gender or promote gender blindness. The study also aims at assessing the institutional arrangement of the Ministry at present and how receptive the organisation is to the IWRM principle that women should be involved in the provision, management and safeguarding of water. Staff awareness and perceptions towards gender are also discussed.The study revealed that although there is some attention to gender mainstreaming in the ministry, there is lack of commitment in terms of written policy on how this is to be done. There is neither a clear strategy nor are there set benchmarks as to how progress is to be monitored. The findings of the study also indicate that the employees of the department generally were not exposed to gender sensitive practice in the workplace. The MEWD/DWA has one gender focal point person whose functions are not clear and gender is not really part of the main agenda as this person has an entirely different job description in which gender is not embedded. The staffing statistics of the DWA also indicate that the department has a rather large number of men as compared to women in the technical and management fields whilst the larger number of women is employed in administrative jobs such as typing or clerical work. This indicates that there is need to have policies that promote gender balancing if women are to be encouraged to come aboard and participate in decision-making in the water sector.In view of the findings of this study, it is recommended that the MEWD/DWA should have an internal gender policy to guide gender action in the institution. The study also recommends a central gender-mainstreaming unit with policy responsibility to guide the overall gender mainstreaming process. There is also need for gender-sensitive budgeting, capacity building on gender-mainstreaming and the development of indicators that will guide the gender-mainstreaming process.

▼ This dissertation studies the work of Zhang Kangkang (a contemporary Chinese woman writer, 1950- ) in the light of evolutionary feminism (also called Darwinian feminism, which studies gender issues from an evolutionary perspective, brings feminist concerns into the fields of evolutionary biology, psychology and sociobiology, and illuminates and rectifies androcentric biases in these fields). I have three main research goals: the first is to present the similarities and congeniality of Zhang and evolutionary feminism, the second to explore whether Zhang has strong feminist concerns, and the third to try to bring Darwinism and feminism together and show their compatibility.
Lying at the intersection of literature, feminist criticism, and evolutionary studies, my approach is based on transcultural and transdisciplinary comparisons. My primary texts include Zhang s writings and the literature on evolutionary feminist theory by scholars including Anne Campbell, Patricia Gowaty, Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, Barbara Smuts, Griet Vandermassen, and Marlene Zuk. I find that these two textual corpuses converge around five topics: sex differences, the mother-child bond, mating systems, violence, and infanticide. I discuss in depth how Zhang s descriptions of motherhood, love and political activity in China highlight these intersections.
Both Zhang and evolutionary feminists try to uncover the evolved tendencies of sex differences in reproductive interests and strategies, understand women s reproductive behavior, highlight both male and female competitiveness and violence, as well as other predispositions that we may consider morally undesirable. Even Zhang, who has much in common with evolutionary insights, several times disproves or even tries to deny what she has revealed about female behavior in her stories. But evolutionary theory is descriptive and does not pursue science and value together. On the other hand, while evolutionary theory can describe human origins and propensities, and the roots of gender and social inequality, solving possible moral dilemmas entails the involvement of ethics, literature, and feminist studies for prescriptive guidance in order to improve our societies and strengthen gender equality.

▼ Feminist development researchers have questioned the efficacy of gender-specific development policies for decades. New to this debate is that some researchers (in this study, Andrea Cornwall for instance) are asking whether some feminist self-reflection is in order. This study approaches gender sensitive development projects from an unorthodox perspective in the sense that, it assesses the gender sensitive development projects just as any other development project, and relies on analysis outside feminist theory. The case in this study is the operational history of Zambian women’s NGO, EPWDA Eastern Province Women’s Development Association, EPWDA. The research material was gathered for this study during a six month field period in the Eastern Province of Zambia using ethnographic research methods. In addition to field material the study includes extensive archival material from the archives of Helsinki University Students Union.

▼ Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) did not theorize gender as a political question. None of her major works deal with women s liberation, women s rights, or with gendered aspects of power. In her public life, she neither participated nor spoke up in favor of any feminist group. Yet, her works have generated a rich and polyphonic tradition of feminist scholarship. This dissertation provides the first monograph length, systematic examination of four decades of feminist responses to Arendt s political thought.
In this study I ask how and for what purposes have feminist interpreters of Arendt singled out concepts and topics for scrutiny and debate in their efforts to understand the absence of a theory of gender in Arendt s oeuvre. Why has precisely Hannah Arendt been so widely and passionately read by feminist theorists, despite the fact that she did not engage in this field of inquiry at all?
By analyzing and contextualizing how each text in feminist secondary literature on Arendt constitutes a distinct response to her silence on gender, and by then grouping these responses, this study finds that feminist efforts to make sense of the absence of a theory of gender in Arendt s political thinking can best be understood through a threefold categorization. First, Anglophone, early second wave sisterhood-interpretations approach Arendt through the conceptual pairs of the public and the private , and the social and the political , arriving at the conclusion that Arendt is a masculine anti-feminist. Second, Continental, French and Italian interpretations operate with Arendt s concept of natality and regard Arendt as a female genius. Finally, postmodern and queer readings highlight concepts such as unique distinctness , speech and action and pariahdom , establishing Arendt as a precursor to feminist elaborations on performativity as well as critiques of identity politics.
I contend that taken together, these three feminist perspectives form a prism through which Arendt s enigmatic silence on gender becomes meaningful. At the same time, the history of contemporary feminist political theorizing emerges as a highly polyphonic tradition. Hence, there is no single, univocal feminist theory or feminism that can be applied to Arendt s texts in order to answer the question of how and why she left questions related to gender and sexuality unanswered. Instead, Arendt s account on gender and sexuality can only be grasped through multiple perspectives and multiple feminist voices.

▼ Development scholars and practitioners have struggled to implement programs that were inclusive of the needs women in the Global South. As a Global South country lauded for its high levels of gender equality indices, the Philippines offers a generative site to analyze the gendered effects of uneven economic development. While some developing countries like the Philippines report a rising number of women in economic and public life, feminist and Global South scholars have argued that gender mainstreaming and women’s empowerment programs have failed and even harmed marginalized populations, such as urban poor women. This research intervenes in this debate by foregrounding the gendered forms of dispossession in communities that are “made poor” in the pursuit of rapid industrialization. Specifically, this research is compelled by the following questions: First, what are the mechanisms through which market-based development strategies transform Filipino women’s bodies into sites of capitalist accumulation? And second, how do Filipino women conceptualize gender equality based on their own epistemes of development and belonging?This dissertation examines these questions through how Filipinas analyze market-based projects like microcredit and labor export as attacks on their kabuhayan, a Filipino word that loosely translates to “life-making.” Unlike concepts such as “labor” or “livelihood,” kabuhayan references a complex, dynamic, and relational set of practices that includes everything from creating informal economies where formal means of employment are impossible and building communal relations of support when state-based social welfare programs are nonexistent, to redefining what livable conditions are and collectively imagining a future for themselves and their communities when no such future seems possible. Focusing on kabuhayan highlights the specificities of neoliberal state-capital regimes of extraction. The disruption of vending, community loan groups, and other practices of kabuhayan ensures a steady supply of workers for the country’s labor export programs, which then translate to the high gender equality index levels in the Philippines.This research uses interdisciplinary methods to examine institutional and discursive strategies deployed by the state to render women subaltern and to assimilate disenfranchised Filipina women into the flows of global capital and labor. By juxtaposing the gender equality indices and economic development strategies with narratives and cultural productions from marginalized Filipina women, my research illuminates how gender equality indices demonstrate not how Filipinas have been empowered by development schemes, but rather how vulnerable women are violently assimilated into the flows of global capital.

▼ The general objective is to create understanding on how the existing traditional
gender role
socialization is the cause for the existing
gender inequality in primary education in research Woreda.
A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods employed, basically the qualitative one.
Children, in their primary school age, have learnt/nurtured their personal
gender behaviour and
practices in their locality by different
gender socialization institutions (family, community, religion,
schools) or actors that act simultaneously, function in different forms and mutually reinforcing
through different means. Consequently, the primary education system that has been established with
the responsibility of cultivating the new generation with modern way of thinking is actually working
its part in reinforcing and perpetuating the existing traditional
gender socialization through the
education policy and the primary school environment means. Hence, children learnt their
gender
identities by observing their role model experiences, studying behaviours and practices in the form
of stories, jokes, playing together, music, drama, art, pictures. Subsequently, children learning and
practising their socially assigned
gender specific
gender roles makes a
gender difference in boys’
and girls’ education performances. For instance, commonly girls migrate to Jeddah to be domestic
servant; and boys to Afar Region and Djibouti for generating additional income for their family; that
was one of the major causes for students school drop out in the research Woreda.
The common educational indicators trends in research Woreda showed an increase in enrolment
rate, decrease in drop out and in repetition rates. Whereas, the qualitative finding asserted that those
nominal educational statistical progresses do not mean an increase in qualitative of education.
Besides, when these trends analysed and interpreted from
gender perspective, the five years trends
in school enrolment and repetition for girls’ and boys’ showed almost a proportional result. While,
the schools’ drop out trend showed boys were the most affected than girls’. This signifies that in the
existing traditional
gender role socialization, though girls are the most affected, boys are also
affected in their primary education. Furthermore, equality in quantity (in enrolment) is not enough
for achieving
gender equality in education, unless the quality of education is maintained
In general,
gender equality is an important aspect of ‘quality of education’. But,
gender equality in
primary education cannot be assumed without engendering the
gender socializing agents primarily.
Hence, to mainstream
gender in the primary education system, all socializing agents need to be first
gender friendly; and holistic, strategic approaches are imperatives in a given locality

▼ Engaging men in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) has implications for
gender equality and sustainable development. Promoting vasectomy can foster more equitable
gender relations between partners, but research on this topic is extremely limited. My research shows that, in Kiribati, vasectomy uptake is both a cause and a consequence of
gender equitable relationships, but connections are complex. Vasectomy uptake can also result from, and lead to, inequitable behaviours.
Links between vasectomy uptake and
gender relations among couples in South Tarawa, Kiribati were explored using a qualitative case study informed by feminist theory and principles from indigenous methodologies. Semi-structured informal interviews were held with five vasectomised I-Kiribati men and their wives, interviewed as a couple and individually. Comparative analysis was undertaken with two same-sex focus group discussions, one with non-vasectomised men and the other with their wives; and with six key informant interviews. Information generated was analysed thematically and further triangulated with international and Kiribati studies.
Among the participant-couples, vasectomy decision-making seemed equitable, consistent with other household decision-making. Notably, the wives were actively involved in their husbands’ decision to be vasectomised. Husbands were often prompted by egalitarian concerns. However, vasectomised men are in the minority and challenge
gender normative behaviour. Family planning was widely viewed as women’s responsibility.
Most participants felt vasectomy created new opportunities that empowered women. Yet, some participants knew of men who used their vasectomies to control their wives’ sexual and reproductive agency, and to enable extramarital relationships. Although vasectomy freed women from contraceptive responsibility, significant shifts in the
gender division of labour did not follow, but exceptions existed.
This research shows that
gender equity is likely to be a pre-condition of vasectomy, and that vasectomy can lead to equitable outcomes. Moreover,
gender relations within and among couples were multifaceted and contradictions existed. My research makes a strong case for why heterosexual men should be central to
gender and development.

▼ Although there is government concern about women opportunities in formal education at all
levels, the representation of women in school administrative positions is still inadequate as
compared to men. Thus, this research work was a case study aimed at investigating gender gaps
in school administrative positions in Chilanga district. Its main objective were to assess the
gender gaps in school administrative positions with regards to rural and urban schools in
Chilanga district.
The literature reviewed showed the prevalence of gender gaps in education and their
consequence on economic growth. The literature reviewed supports two obvious policy
recommendations: increasing women‟s access to education and promote their participation in
decision making positions, this includes administrative positions in education sector.
Qualitative methods were used to collect and analyze data from 70 participants who were
selected purposively and randomly. This included, the district education board secretary, 2
Senior Education Standard Officers (ESO), 2 top management officials from HR department, 20
school administrators, 5 PTA chairpersons, and 40 Teachers (20 males and 20 females)
respectively. Data from one to one semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were
thematically analysed. Presentations of the findings were done using tables, direct quotations and
simple narrations.
However, the findings of the study revealed that the current situation of gender gaps in
administrative positions in both rural and urban schools was as a result of male dominance in
administrative positions and qualities for school administrators. Motivation was found to be a
leading factor in the current changes in gender gaps in school administrative positions. Gender
roles, education qualification, socialisation, female self-perception and mentor role were
revealed to be the factors leading to gender gaps in education.
To reduce gender gaps in school administrative positions, the study recommended that; women
share gender roles with their spouses in order to create more time for administrative duties,
school administrators to allow more women to be involved in administrative work, female
teachers to form professional networking clubs where they mentor each other in order to assist in
confidence building, enhancing self-esteem and socialisation and policy makers to come up with
a curriculum that include gender issues for the purpose of sensitizing the community on the
social/cultural barriers which cause gender imbalance in education administration.
Conclusively, it is hoped that with all the policies being implemented to enhance female
participation in decision making positions, this study might contribute a lot in encouraging the
women to have small size families and share family responsibility equally with their spouses in
order to create ample time for their career progress. This can be done through family planning

Firstly, I will raise the issue of bilingualism and I will also take time to compare code switching with two similar linguistic concepts, code mixing and borrowing. Secondly, I will list the main types and some pragmatic aspects of switching. In the rest of the paper I will present Hungarian immigrants living in three foreign countries, United States of America, Canada and Australia and collect actual speech samples from them as evidence to prove the reality of language shift.

▼ The assignment of grammatical gender in German is a notoriously problematic phenomenon due to the apparent opacity of the gender assignment system (e.g. Comrie 1999: 461). Various models of German gender assignment have been proposed (e.g. Spitz 1965, Köpcke 1982, Corbett 1991, Wegener 1995), but none of these is able to account for all of the German data.
This thesis investigates a relatively under-explored, recent approach to German gender assignment in the form of Optimal Gender Assignment Theory (OGAT), proposed by Rice (2006). Using the framework of Optimality Theory, OGAT claims that the form and meaning of a noun are of equal importance with respect to its gender. This is formally represented by the crucial equal ranking of all gender assignment constraints in a block of gender features, which is in turn ranked above a default markedness hierarchy *NEUTER » *FEMININE » *MASCULINE, which is based on category size.
A key weakness of OGAT is that it does not specify what constitutes a valid gender features constraint. This means that, in theory, any constraint can be proposed ad hoc to ensure that an OGAT analysis yields the correct result. In order to prevent any constraints based on ‘postfactum rationalisations’ (Comrie 1999: 461) from being included in the investigation, the gender features constraints which have been proposed in the literature for German are assessed according to six criteria suggested by Enger (2009), which seek to determine whether there is independent evidence for a gender features constraint.
Using an independently-verified constraint set, OGAT is then tested on a sample of 592 nouns systematically selected from the Duden Rechtschreibung. The results indicate that OGAT is relatively successful in its predictions when compared to other approaches but that it cannot account fully for the sample data. Accordingly, a revised version of the theory is proposed (OGAT II), which involves the ranking of certain gender features constraints. It is found that OGAT II is able to account for the genders of around 95% of nouns in the sample. A number of specific aspects of OGAT II are then tested by means of an experiment in which native German speakers are required to assign genders to 26 pseudo-nouns. The results suggest that OGAT II comes the closest of the systems discussed in the literature to modelling how native speakers assign gender in German.
