▼ The purposes of this study were to explore the relationship of cognitive complexity to norms and sanctions for the traditional family roles; to investigate intergenerational relationships involving roles and cognitive structures and to estimate the reliability of the questions from the Washington Role Inventory regarding norms and sanctions for the provider, housekeeper, child care and child socialization roles. The following hypotheses were tested: Hypothesis 1: There will be a positive relationship between traditional family norms and cognitive simplicity for females. Hypothesis 2: There will be a positive relationship between more negative sanctions and cognitive simplicity for females. Hypothesis 3: Parental norms, parental sanctions and parental cognitive complexity scores will be significant predictors of the daughter's cognitive complexity scores. Fifty six female students from two Family Life classes at Oregon State University participated in the study. Thirty mothers and 23 fathers of these students also answered the questionnaires which had been mailed to them. The Washington Role Inventory and Bieri's REP Test were the instruments used to collect data regarding role norms and sanctions and cognitive complexity. In addition, demographic information was also collected from each subject. The students filled out the questionnaires in class, addressed envelopes to their parents and wrote a short letter to their parents asking them to also participate. An introductory letter and questionnaires were then mailed to the parents of each student. One follow up letter was mailed two weeks later. Fifty percent of the parents, 30 mothers and 23 fathers, returned completed questionnaires. After a 3 week period students were again Asked to fill out the questions from the Washington Role Inventory as a measure of test-retest reliability. The test-retest reliability of the questions from the Washington Role Inventory was estimated using Kendall's Tau rank order correlation coefficient. Hypothesis 1 was tested using t-tests of the differences between the student's mean REP scores as they were classified by responses regarding who should perform each role. For hypothesis 2 analyses of variance were used to test if there were significant differences between response groups for each of the sanction items. Stepwise multiple regression techniques using the mothers' and father' responses separately and then combined were employed in the analysis of the data for hypothesis 3. The test-retest reliability estimates for the role norm and sanction items were all significant (p<.001), indicating consistency in the students' responses over the 3 week period. The t-tests revealed no significant differences in the students' mean REP scores for the different normative responses for the traditional family roles. There were no significant differences between the response categories for the sanction items regarding the husband's or wife's performance of each role. ▼ Factors identified from the literature as common to abused wives were compared with a sample of 30 abused and 60 non-abused wives from Salt Lade City, Utah, and its suburbs to delineate which of those factors were unique to abused wives in Salt Lake City area. The conceptual framework of this descriptive study was based on general systems history. The conjugal relationship was the target system, the wife and her spouse were subsystems, and the socioeconomic environment was the supra-system. A questionnaire was employed to investigate five research questions regarding the extend demographic characteristics distinguish abused populations, the association between a women’s childhood experience with violence in the home and woman’s experience with abuse from her spouse, the relationship between the traditional female role and abused or non-abused wives, the kinds of behavior apparent in the conjugal relationship of the abused population, and the kinds of social of personal characteristics apparent among abused wives. Factors found to have occurred significantly more often with the abused wives sample included shared household conjugal relationships, greater age differences between the wife and her spouse, unemployment, lower occupational status, and lower socioeconomic status. Factors significant to the abuse sample also included more conflicting opinions between spouses, more experience with abuse in the childhood home, more abuse during pregnancy, more discord between spouses during pregnancy, more dependency of wives on their spouses, lower self-esteem, more social isolation, and more use of alcohol and antidepressants. The abuse wife’s childhood experience with abuse was significantly related to her present experience with wife abuse, and abused wives were accused of infidelity by their spouses more often than non-abused wives. No significant difference was found between samples in the status inconsistency of spouses in occupational status or education level, in the communication level of the wife and her spouse, and in the acceptance of the traditional female role. Implications for nursing practice and for further research were included, along with recommendations for practical application of findings.

▼ In this study patterns of shared family time in 210 two-parent, two-child Oregon households were described. The relationship between amounts of shared time and a number of family and environmental characteristics was also researched. The study used the Oregon data from a contributing project of the Northeast Regional Research Project NE 113, an Interstate Urban/Rural Comparison of Families' Time Use. A sample of 210 families divided into five groups by age of the youngest child was drawn. Half the families were classified as urban and half as rural. The mean age of the homemakers and their spouses was approximately 32 years. About 72 percent of the homemakers were not employed outside the home. However, about 80 percent of the spouses reported working 40 or more weekly hours. Families recorded the time use of members over the age of six for two charted 24-hour periods. The second recording day was used to analyze the incidence of shared time. The number of shared time episodes recorded by the families for one day ranged from zero to 15, with a mean of 3.5 daily episodes. The amounts of daily shared time ranged from zero to 1,140 minutes (19 hours). About 19 percent of the families reported no shared time. The most common group of family members participating in shared activity was both parents. The whole family was reported as participants in 13 percent of the shared episodes. For shared time episodes not involving both parents, participation between the homemaker and children was more evident than that between the spouse and children. Nonwork activities accounted for the greater proportion of shared family time episodes. One-third of the episodes were spent in eating together and over one-fourth in social and recreational pursuits. About 18 percent of shared episodes were reported as household work activities, with shopping the task area most commonly shared. Care of family members accounted for 15 percent of the shared episodes reported. The home was the common site for shared activity with threefourths of the shared time episodes occurring in that setting. About 22 percent of the episodes were shared away from the home, work or school environments. More time was shared by family members on weekend days than on weekdays. While the mean amount of shared time for weekend days rose nearly 80 minutes above a daily average of 180 minutes, the mean time shared on weekdays fell 25 minutes below the average. In a regression model with twelve variables, day of the week and age of the homemaker showed significant positive relationships to amounts of shared time at the .05 level. Amounts of shared time tended to increase with the occurrence of weekend days. Shared time also tended to increase in this model as homemakers became older. In a model specifying the .05 significance level for the inclusion of variables, day of the week had a positive effect on amounts of shared time. ▼ The relative sweetness, flavor, texture and overall acceptance of sucrose and fructose was determined at various sugar levels in sugar cookies, white cake, vanilla pudding and lemonade. Because of the reported increased sweetness of fructose and its increased tolerance in individuals with diabetes mellitus, the study was designed to investigate the possibility of fructose as an alternative sweetener. Taste panel members were used to evaluate the products. All products were served in duplicate and only data from those judges who had sampled both replications were used for the statistical analysis. Each product was prepared at 100%, 50% and 25% of the specified recipe quantity, using three different sugars: sucrose, fructose equal to sucrose by weight and fructose equal to sucrose by volume. A second objective of this study was to determine if quantities less than suggested in traditional recipes for either sugar could be used without damaging product acceptability. The results of this study indicated that sucrose was both preferred and considered sweeter than fructose in sugar cookies, however; the reverse held true in lemonade. Based on the results of this study the author does not recommend that individuals substitute fructose for sucrose. In addition to panels comparing sucrose and fructose in baked products, the difference in diabetic and non diabetic taste sensitivity was also evaluated. Detection and recognition thresholds were determined for diabetic and non diabetic youth (19-15 yrs.) and adults (16 yrs. and older) for sweet, sour, salty and bitter taste stimuli. Diabetics showed a lower sensitivity, especially in older individuals, with the exception of sour stimuli. As previously reported, detection thresholds were lower than recognition thresholds. The youth groups were better able to detect the presence of stimuli at lower levels than the adult groups, however, they were not as good at recognizing the stimuli. ▼ Pregnancy control knowledge, practices, and attitudes of mothers of large families who lived in areas of rural Utah were investigated. The purpose of the study was to describe and document characteristics of this select group of women, mothers of large families. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire mailed to women in selected rural counties of Utah who were mothers of at least six living children. All of the participants of the study had given birth to a child during 1976. One hundred-six questionnaires were analyzed. This study indicates that it is by choice that a group of women in rural Utah have large families. As a group, they felt they have all the information about birth control methods that they need. The tool used to measure their actual knowledge of pregnancy control devices was inadequate due to different interpretations of the work effectiveness. Most of the women who participated in the study have used some form of pregnancy control at some time to space their children, although a number of them have not. Again, this is a matter of personal preference as they felt birth control was available to them if they wanted to use it. Many of the women indicated they wanted more children, a factor which will undoubtedly influence future contraceptive use. This group of women voiced strong attitudes regarding contraception. Health was important to them and was considered a valid reason for pregnancy prevention. However, Economics; and overpopulation were not. Use of contraceptives was influenced by religious values and desire for children. Convenience of birth control methods was not notably important to these women. They felt that other people wanted small families due to selfishness, Economics;, and ecological reasons. Strong feelings were expressed that it was the right of each individual couple to decide the size of their family. Strong disapproval was given for government support of families or family planning agencies. The results of this study are only pertinent to the group of women in the particular geographic location due to the dominance of the LDS religion. Further study is needed to document the pregnancy control knowledge, practices, and attitudes or women having large families in other areas of the United States. Further study is also needed in Utah to compare pregnancy control knowledge, practices, and attitudes of women with small families as well as large families. Several implications for Nursing; care can be drawn from this study. First, nurses were not considered by the group of women in the study to be an important or even a mentionable part of the family planning care they had received. This may be because the women did not know nurses were available to provide family planning care or because nurses actually are not knowledgeable resources for family planning care and counseling.
