▼ This study conducted at Fairview Hospital and Training Center, Salem, Oregon was part of a larger study by the Mental Health Division, Department of Human Resources, State of Oregon. The purpose was to determine a course of action to be followed by the Food Service Department to compensate for decreasing numbers of resident (patient) workers available to assist with work in the serving areas. The purpose of the thesis study was to compare and analyze worker utilization and productivity in two cottage serving areas, Martin and Patterson, using random sampling observations. The cottages were alike in all respects except the composition of the staff. Resident workers as well as regular employees were scheduled in Martin, but only regular employees in Patterson. A preliminary study, by continuous observation, was conducted in each area for one complete work day to determine how workers spent their time and the tasks involved. All tasks were grouped into three work classifications, direct work, indirect work and delays, based on those used by Donaldson, University of Wisconsin. Results of how time was spent, 61 percent direct work, 6 percent indirect work and 33 percent delays, provided estimates from which to calculate the minimum number of random observations required for the next part of the study. Data for the work sampling study were collected by trained observers over a two-week period. Total observational readings in each cottage varied because of the different number of persons working in each area. Findings showed: 1. Regular employees and resident workers working together spent 54. 18 percent of their time for direct work, 5.76 percent for indirect work, and 46.29 percent for delays. 2. Regular employees working alone spent 65.26 percent of their time for direct work, 1. 99 percent for indirect work and 32.75 percent for delays. 3. The productivity rate, determined as the total of direct work and indirect work time, was 67 percent for regular employees working alone, 54 percent for employees and resident workers working together (80 percent for employees and 44 percent for resident workers). 4. Time spent in direct work was spread fairly evenly throughout the day when resident workers were present. When employees worked alone, direct work time had pronounced peaks around meal periods. 5. The average labor time per meal served for employees and resident workers combined was 1 0.46 minutes, for employees working alone, 4.60 minutes. 6, Findings did not support the three hypotheses tested: that the total percent of direct and indirect work combined will be the same with either staffing pattern; that direct work time will be greater without resident workers present, but there will be a corresponding difference in indirect work activities relating to resident workers; and that delay time will be the same for both staffing patterns. 7. ▼ The main objective of this study was to identify family life competencies needed by high school graduates, as perceived by a majority of respondents. In addition, the null hypothesis tested was: that age, sex, and educational level are each independent of response on each individual competency statement. Testing was done at the 5% level of significance. The questionnaire was developed through a synthesis of goals stated in twelve family life curriculum guides published since 1965. A working draft of the questionnaire was developmentally tested with three high school seniors and three mothers of teenagers. The survey instrument included provisions for indicating personal data, and offered four categories of "Essential", "Necessary", "Permissible", and "Unimportant", for participants to respond to nine family life topics and seventy competency statements. The population included those couples and individuals voluntarily attending county public health prenatal classes in western Oregon. Data were collected from all five counties with an on-going program. One hundred forty-seven usable questionnaires were obtained. Four instruments were disregarded because of incomplete personal data. Participants in the study ranged from 16 to 45 years of age with a mean age of 25, and with 46.94 percent of the people in the 25 to 29 age group. Males numbered 56 (38. 10 percent) in the participating group, with 91 (61.90 percent) females. Grouped educational levels revealed 27. 21 percent having more than 16 years of education and the groups with 12 years and with 13-15 years of education each being 26. 53 percent of the total sample. Frequency counts and percentages of the total sample indicating favorable responses, were computed and presented for each of the 9 family life topics and 70 competency statements. All 9 family life topics and 64 of the 70 competency statements received a majority (over 50 percent) of favorable responses. Chi-square tests were computed on each item of the questionnaire to test the null hypothesis that age, sex, and educational level are each independent of response. The null hypothesis was rejected for age, in seven instances. Most cases showed younger people responding favorably more often than expected and older people responding less favorably more often than expected. The null hypothesis was rejected for sex in four instances, with males responding less favorably more often and females more favorably more often than expected. The null hypothesis for educational level was rejected in nine instances. More educated people tended to respond less favorably more often and less educated people tended to respond more favorably more often than expected. Implications of the study for the family living curriculum in Oregon secondary schools, as indicated in the opinions of the respondents, are as follows: 1. ▼ The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of social position and stage in the family life cycle on the use of living and family rooms in houses with and without a family room. Homes built from two floorplans were selected for the sample. These two floorplans were similar in square footage and room layout with the exception one plan included a family room. The 76 addresses of the population to be studied were obtained from Harman Homes. The addresses of 34 Laura houses and 42 Judy houses were received, The occupants living at these addresses were contacted to request an interview. The families selected met the criterion that both the husband and wife were presently living in the house. Of the 76 occupants contacted, 61 – 27 Laura occupants and 34 Judy occupants – met the criteria and consented to be interviewed. Of the 61 occupants interviewed, 37 occupants completed and returned diary records, 15 Judy and 22 Laura interviewees, Hollingshead's "Two Factor Index of Social Position" was used to classify interviewees into low, middle, or high social position. Interviewees were placed into one of these three stages of the family life cycle: beginning stage, expanding stage, or contracting stage. Three types of room use were studied: (1) time use, (2) activity use, and (3) activity time use. Time use was the actual amount of time in minutes or hours the room was occupied in a 24 hour day. Activity use was the number of activities pursued in the room regardless of the number of people involved or amount of time spent in the activity, The highest number of activities any one category could have for one day was 24 or 144 for the six activity categories: interaction activities, home operations, audio-visual activities, sleep/ rest/relaxation, job or school operations, and simultaneous multiple activities. Activity time use was the number of man hours involved in specific activity in a given room and was computed by multiplying the number of people involved in activity by amount of time spent in it. Interview schedules and diary records were tabulated and analyzed to describe the sample and report room use. The living room in the house without a family room was used an average of 7.9 hours per day. However, in the house with the family room, the living room was used an average of 4.6 hours per day and the family room was used 5. 9 hours per day. The combined use of these two rooms averaged 10.5 hours. Of the 10.5 hours, 43 percent was spent in the living room and 57 percent was spent in the family room. The living room in houses without a family room was used an average of 75 percent of the combined room use of living and family rooms in houses with a family room. However, the living room in houses without a family room was used 42 percent more than the living room was used and 25 percent more than the family room was used in houses with both living and family rooms. ▼ The purpose of this research was to determine parents and teenagers slang awareness and when this awareness begins to appear in the vocabulary of the younger generation. Two studies were construed to measure the intended purpose of t his research. Study A was conducted to determine if semantic influence and concept attainment of slang definitions would be greater for teenagers than that for adults. The instrument was an open ended word list consisting of 25 slang terms. Criterion for the selection of words was assessed by determining if each word used could be found in three of the five sources. They not only need to be present, but also have the same or related definition. It was thought that these words would be the ones generally accepted as having a universal meaning. These words were also characterized by having: <ol> Dictionary definition – The definition found in any abridged dictionary. Traditional slang definition – The general slang usage as indicated by the dictionary. Drug slang definition – The definition used in the drug culture. </ol> Study B was conducted to evaluate the terms used to determine at v1hat grade level these terms appear in the vocabulary of the younger generation. The sane word list used in Study A was used in Study B, only instead of writing a definition, subjects were asked to write next to each word, the first drug word that came to their mind in association to the stimulus word, and if they couldn't think of a drug word, then any word. The findings of Study A indicate that an interaction barrier of slang understanding does exist between parents and teenagers. A t-test was computed on the dictionary definitions of parents and teenagers, as was on each of the traditional slang and drug slang definitions. There was no significant differences in the understanding of dictionary meanings; however, both the traditional and drug slang were significant at beyond the .01 level. From the results of Study B, one can with some certainty depict the period that one begins understanding slang terminology , Though some Elementary subjects have a slang knowledge, the results suggest that from the Junior High on through College there is a steady increase of one's understanding of slang terms. ▼ The views held by children about the ere at ion and birth of babies are of importance in child development and developmental psychology. However, most of the research done in this area has been of a theoretical nature rather than empirical. The research shows controversy in the child's concept of human conception and birth, and because of this controversy a study was deemed necessary to find out more of what the young child's concept is of human conception and birth. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to attempt to determine the extent of children's awareness of the nature of human conception and birth. The objectives of this study were to investigate the nature of the child's understanding and awareness of human conception and birth, as well as to investigate the influence of such factors as the child's sex and age, and the social class of the family. The hypotheses were that young children would have a realistic awareness and understanding of human conception and birth and that there would be differences between children of different social class backgrounds, children of different sex groups, and children of different age groups in their understanding and awareness of human conception and birth. In order to test these hypotheses, a questionnaire consisting of eleven questions was devised to explore what concepts these young children have i n their awareness and understanding of human conception and birth. The children studied were selected according to age and social class and consisted of sixty children: 20 kindergarten children, 20 nursery school children, and 20 Head Start children. Each of these groups was fairly equal in the number of boys and girls questioned. The questions were administered in the same order. A few of the quest ions were eliminated if the child could not answer a preceding one. The responses to questions were t hen recorded by the frequency of the response. Because of the nature of this study, no statistical data could be applied; rather, the three groups were compared according to their responses and the number given to each response. The results of this study show that young children are realistically aware of human conception and birth but they do not have a full understanding of the total process. This study also reveals a great difference in the children's responses among the social classes studied, with the Head Start children being deviant from the other two groups in that they're much less well informed. Among the different age groups, the older group was better informed than were the younger children. A frequency test was done on the two sex groups, in relation to their response s, but no differences were found. Advisors/Committee Members: Don C. Carter, ;.
