▼ Past research shows that bodily
experiences can activate concepts to which they are metaphorically linked and can influence judgments in other unrelated domains. Although some studies have focused on
experiences that have a direct semantic correspondence to the target being judged (e.g., experience of physical warmth affects judgments of how “warm” a person is, experience of a fishy odor leads people to consider something as “fishy or suspicious” etc.), other embodied
experiences do not fall into this category because they have a dynamic, directional character that is hard to capture in pure semantic terms (e.g., the experience of running one’s hands through water or stroking the fur of a pet in a particular direction). I suggest that these
experiences have not only a sensory aspect (e.g., “wet” or “soft”) but a motor component as well that suggests movement in a specific direction. Captured linguistically in what are called dynamic orientation metaphors, the motor component of such
experiences is important because it suggests movement in a particular direction. Characteristics of the movement (type and direction) have implications for behavior. I examine one such experience, the physical experience of going against the flow, and show how it can influence judgments and decisions in two different domains: Consumer choice and persuasion.
I show in a series of experiments that the sensorimotor experience of going against the flow affects the choices consumers make with participants picking products that are normatively less preferred. Further, I find that this effect only holds when the sensorimotor sensation is self-experienced and when people have to rely on their own internal sense of flow (i.e., when there is no external norm provided). When extended to the persuasion domain, I find that these
experiences affect an individual’s desire to resist a persuasive message. A series of studies also shows that this effect is more evident when the experience is acquired actively (i.e., is volitional). This research important because it moves the embodied cognition literature from work that explores sensations that have descriptive terms in language to a consideration of more dynamic sensations that have a motor aspect. Such
experiences, because they involve action and direction, possess the power to alter not only what people choose in unrelated situations (i.e., their behavior) but also their inclination to protest against a persuasive message.

▼ The major intent of this study was to investigate pre-school teacher’s attitudes,
expectation,
experiences; and the strategies they employ to manage children’s
problem behaviors. Problem behavior in school is a worldwide problem that can
have negative consequences for the general school climate. This problem
behavior does not only negatively impact upon their own developmental
outcomes, but can also have negative consequences for the teacher. These
consequences lead to an inability of teacher to manage behavior problems in the
classroom, which is rated the most serious problem facing teachers and quality
of teacher’s interactions with the students is increasingly acknowledged as a
major importance for student’s success in school. This study was conducted in
cherry Orchard Academy which is found in KolfeKeranio sub-city, Addis Ababa.
The study employed qualitative case study design, three children with problem
behavior, their homeroom teachers and parents’ of children with problem
behavior, were purposely selected using critical case sampling method consisting
of three months of observations of students’ behavior inside the classroom
setting and interviews with teachers and focus group discussion were used to
collect data from parents’ of children with problem behavior. In addition to this,
in quantitative study, the questionnaire was administered to all seventeen
teachers in the school to investigate the researcher questions. The result
indicated that when problem behavior appeared in the classroom, the teacher
feeling of frustrations, negative attitudes and assumption towards their student
emerged

▼ Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common condition affecting women. POP symptoms are associated with perineal, abdominal and pelvic discomfort, bladder and bowel disorders and psychological distress. POP is often treated with pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFME) and/or surgery. It is known that women with POP have problems with long-term adherence to PFME and, therefore, investigating PFME adherence in women with POP will provide information that may help improve future treatment outcomes.
Five women participated in the current study, all of whom had previously taken part in the intervention arm of a randomised controlled trial of PFME for POP called the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Physiotherapy (POPPY) trial. The aim of the current qualitative study was to explore the
experiences of these women regarding their on-going practice of PFME. The five participants were interviewed using a semi-structured approach by the researcher who had been their physiotherapist in the original trial. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, then analysed using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach. Three core themes were identified in the analysis, namely, (1) Patterns of PFME Behaviour, (2) PFME Maintenance Cycles and (3) Family as Priority.
The first theme named 'Patterns of PFME Behaviour', describes exercise characteristics and behaviours. The second theme, named 'PFME Maintenance Cycles' captured the participantsʼ responses to and evaluations of their exercise experience and related to PFME self-efficacy. The third theme, named 'Family as Priority' was expressed in terms of either putting family first at the expense of caring for ones self, or successfully combining the priorities of family and self .
The three identified themes are discussed in relation to the literature on POP, and the generalised health behaviour models of the transtheoretical model of change (TTM) and the health action process approach (HAPA).
In summary, PFME behaviours were identified as having shared and eclectic patterns and routines. PFME maintenance cycles were discussed in terms of the participantsʼ responses to and evaluation of doing PFME, and also concepts about self-efficacy. Family was identified as a priority affecting the womenʼs adherence to PFME for POP. The
experiences of women in this study were congruent with other qualitative studies in finding that routines were helpful in establishing PFME behaviours and declining PFME behaviours over time were common; a main difference was the substantive theme around family as priority which is not so evident in prior studies about pelvic floor muscle exercise adherence. Clinically this suggests that health professionals could include questions about the family in assessment and consider in what way the family might influence exercise behaviours.

▼ The aim of this study was to explore life crises prevalence of both employed and unemployed early adults in Windhoek, Namibia, by comparing differences in life crisis reporting between them. The study also aimed to determine gender differences in life crisis experiences of early adults, if any, and also the areas in which life crisis was most experienced. Guided by a quantitative approach, an Adult Crisis Episode Retrospective Self-Assessment Tool (ACERSAT) was used to collect the data. Snowball sampling and simple random sampling methods were used to select the employed and unemployed participants respectively. A total sample of 186 early adults participated, of which ninety-five (95) were officially employed and ninety-one (91) were unemployed. The data obtained were analysed through SPSS version 25.0 using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages. A Chi-Square test of Independence was also conducted to determine if there was any significant relationship between life crisis reporting, occupation status, and gender. Overall, 82.8% of the sample conceded to experiencing an early adult life crisis. The employed participants reported more life crisis than the unemployed participants by 7.2%. Males reported a greater incidence of life crisis than females by 5.7% and most life crises reported were related to the career and/or family categories. No significant association was found between life crisis, occupation status and gender. The results indicated a prevalence of early adult life crisis experiences, especially amongst employed males. Career and family were the areas surrounding the majority of the reported life crisis. Therefore, it is recommended for secondary and tertiary level life skills education to include developmental psychology to better prepare early adults for prospective life crisis experiences. It is further recommended that future studies should address coping strategies for this group and possible post-crisis growth.

▼ Early childhood
experiences are very imperative in affecting children’s holistic development and
also their capacity to contribute to the wellbeing of the society. However, this possibility is not
merely accessible for many children with visual impairments. The purpose of this study was to
assess the practices of early childhood education for children with visual impairment regards to
the instructional practices, accessibility of classroom and outside classroom physical
environment and parent school communication. Moreover, the study was aimed to identify the
good practices and challenges in supporting preschool children with visual impairment. In order
to attain the purpose, interview, FGD and field observations were employed. Results indicated,
the school is offering snack, guidance and counseling service, medical and financial support.
The results for analysis provided the specific information of instructional contents, in some way
given attention to the socio emotional, mathematical and language development of children.
However, instruction is failed to notice the value of storytelling, singing, creative movement, and
play that help children to promote their development. The study finds out less attention is given
for family role at home in supporting children with visual impairment. Also, lack of
documentation is noticed as a challenge. Classroom is accessible for children with visual
impairment; Pathways, water taps and the toilet are also favorable and accessible however,
there are no outdoor playing materials. In order to improve the beginner class services for
children with visual impairment, research forwards the school to use age appropriate
instruction, build up documentation of academic records and advancement in parent school
communication. Also the researcher forwards to government officials working together to make
preschools accessible for children with visual impairment.

▼ Background
Giving birth is one of the most important events in a woman’s life, and is a highly individualistic and unique experience with many physical, physiological and psycho-social changes in the woman’s life that requires support, help and motivation, not only from professional carers but also from family members.
Aim
The aim of this study was to survey women’s childbirth
experiences in two state hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province in South Africa, in an attempt to identify women’s
experiences of labour and birth.
Method
A non-experimental, quantitative survey was conducted in two state hospitals in the eThekwini District of KZN. Population included all post-partum patients in urban KZN hospitals where the research was conducted. Purposive sampling was used. Two hundred and one low risk mothers; 119 (59%) from hospital A and 82 (41%) from hospital B responded to the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ). Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results
Results denoted both positive and negative childbirth
experiences with positive childbirth
experiences being dominant on almost all domains of the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire. A high level of women’s experienced capacity and experienced good professional care and support as well as professional skills were found to be associated with a positive childbirth experience.
Negative childbirth
experiences were reported mostly in additional comments by few respondents. These negative
experiences were found to be linked to women’s poor relationships with staff, a lack of information, neglect and abandonment and not receiving pain relief. Problems such as the shortage of staff and an unfriendly environment were identified to affect childbirth support, leading to a negative experience. Uncleanliness and lack of privacy contributed to feeling unsafe, and fear, anxiety and a lack of support influenced the experience of pain.
Conclusion No birth story is exactly the same, and the study results showed that negative and positive
experiences coexisted; however positive and satisfying childbirth
experiences were dominant amongst the majority of the respondents in the current study. How mothers feel about their labour and birth, whether positive or negative, was found to depend on their individual labour process and outcome. Thus, from the women’s perspective, the study described childbirth experience as a multi-dimensional experience.

▼ The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental research study was to explore the
difference that life
experiences, educational
experiences, and clinical
experiences made on
physical therapy students’ considerations to practice pediatrics. There has been a lack of research
regarding how different
experiences with children integrated into the curriculum in pediatric
physical therapy education positively influences students’ interests and considerations to practice
pediatrics. This research study investigated the problem using the framework of adult learning
theory and experiential learning. Physical therapy students from three Upper Midwestern
physical therapy programs (Years 1 through 3) voluntarily participated in this survey research.
A survey was developed to assess which
experiences positively influenced students’
considerations to practice pediatrics after graduation from college. Results from respondents who
were considering pediatrics indicated they had completed an observation with children with
functional, activity, and participation limitations. Most respondents indicated they had an interest
in pediatrics in Year 1. There was a significant difference found between life
experiences,
educational
experiences, and clinical
experiences of students who considered practicing
pediatrics and those who were not considering practicing pediatrics. Implications from this study
are that positive life
experiences, educational
experiences, and clinical
experiences with children
strongly influenced student respondents’ considerations to practice pediatrics. Integration of
these
experiences earlier and throughout a physical therapy program can positively influence
students’ considerations to practice pediatrics.

▼ This study investigated co-researchers’ accounts of mystical and transcendent exceptional human experiences (EHEs) and integration processes in the context of two music festivals (i.e., Shambhala and Burning Man). Six co-researchers who had attended one or both of the festivals and experienced a life-changing EHE therein were recruited and interviewed. Emergent themes were analyzed using transpersonal, phenomenological, heuristic, and hermeneutic research methods. The identified themes unfolded within three parts: Entering Mystical Kingdoms, Illuminating the Exceptional Human Experience, and The Essential Gifts of the Exceptional Human Experience. These parts explicated meaningful festival characteristics, the triggers and phenomenology of the EHEs themselves, and the EHEs’ transformative effects and integration processes, respectively. Prominent overarching themes emerged that involved acceptance and surrender to the EHE, its transformative effects, and its integration process. The findings provide important implications for mental health and psychotherapy regarding EHE integration, guidelines for potential experiencers, and areas for future research.

▼ The "Humans of a Warming World" (HOWW) project described in this thesis was designed with the primary intention of humanizing the issue of global climate change by creating a time capsule of the feelings, perceptions and
experiences of 13 participants selected from various global sub-regions. The research was conducted in the genre of a hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry in which each participant was interviewed, salient excerpts were selected, and shared on a HOWW website and Facebook community page. An analysis of the interviews suggested that the participants'
experiences of climate change were shaped by diverse realities and views. Further, the participants' perceptions could be placed along a continuum of awareness, concern, engagement and impact. For some a self-perpetuating cycle of engagement appeared to begin once concern led to conviction for taking action and, thereafter resulted in a sense of agency and empowerment.

▼ The use of universal or standard precautions by health
care workers (HCWs) is essential to avoid exposure to blood and
other body secretions that may transmit infectious diseases. Health
care workers in Uganda often find it difficult to translate the
principles of universal precautions into practice. Without
appropriate use of universal precautions, disease transmission to
HCWs may rise. In a resource-constrained environment such as Uganda
however, nurses typically do not practice universal precautions
unless they know the patients’ HIV or AIDS status. There is a need
to understand the experiences and the context in which nurses’
practice universal precautions. Therefore, the purpose of this
study was to explore the experience of Ugandan nurses and midwives
in the practice of universal precautions and to identify factors
that influence the use of universal precautions by nurses while
caring for persons living with HIV and AIDS. A qualitative research
approach, using a focused ethnography was used for the
study.

▼ Background: Admission on a closed acute psychiatric ward can cause burden to patients. This burden can be caused by coercive measures, but also by other harmful
experiences during admission. Research into harmful
experiences during psychiatric admission, and the burden they cause, is scarce.
Aim: The aim of this study is to explore psychiatric patients’ burden, caused by harmful
experiences during their admission on a closed acute ward.
Method: This study is a cross-sectional observational study conducted within a larger study into the traumatic effects of coercive measures. Participants were voluntary or involuntary admitted psychiatric patients, who were exposed to seclusion, forced medication or restrictions on leaving the ward. The instruments used in this study are the Psychiatric
Experiences Questionnaire and the Life events Checklist.
Results: The findings of this study show that patients report high rates (an average of more than eight) of harmful
experiences. Frequent mentioned
experiences with the highest reported burden are “experiencing staff calling you names or bullying you in some other verbal way”, “being deprived of adequate food or nutrition”, “not having adequate privacy for bathing, dressing, or using the toilet” and “having medication used as a threat or punishment”.
Conclusion: The most harmful
experiences for patients on a closed acute ward are
experiences related to the contact between patients and staff.
Recommendations: Through knowledge about which
experiences are harmful to patients, nurses can play an important role in preventing these
experiences or in providing aftercare for
experiences that cannot be eliminated. Future research is needed into the effects of harmful
experiences on future treatment and the factors associated with perceived burden. Additionally, in policy and service development, as in developing nursing practice, patient
experiences must play an important role.

▼ Given that globally, neurological disorders like epilepsy have remained a public health issue, this study explored the experiences of persons living with epilepsy (PLWE) in Accra, Ghana. The study was guided by Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological systems theory. The objectives of the study were to: (a) explore the perceptions of PLWE and key informants regarding the disease, (b) identify the challenges faced by PLWE, (c) find out the coping strategies adopted by PLWE and (d) ascertain the kinds of support available to PLWE. A qualitative research design was employed for the study. In-depth individual interviews using interview guides were conducted with twenty participants, comprising of fourteen PLWE and six key informants (two caregivers, two nurses and two officials). Participants were selected using purposive and snow ball sampling techniques. The data was analysed thematically and it was revealed that many PLWE and caregivers perceived epilepsy as a spiritual and curable disease. However, the nurses at Kaneshie Polyclinic and officials of BasicNeeds-Ghana perceived epilepsy as a medical condition. Also, it was found that PLWE faced challenges, such as stigma and discrimination, inability to complete school, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, difficulty finding marriage partners and financial constraints. Moreover, it was found that PLWE coped with the disease by adopting strategies like exclusion and concealment of the disease and involvement in religious activities. Also, evidence showed that there was support available for PLWE through caregivers, government and BasicNeeds-Ghana. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that public education on epilepsy be intensified. Furthermore, there is the need to ensure that PLWE have access to improved healthcare. It is also recommended that PLWE are enrolled on the NHIS and LEAP in order to improve their quality of life.

▼ The current research examines a class of items that almost every consumer owns: mementos. Whether a photograph taken during a special event, souvenirs purchased on a vacation, or ticket stubs saved from a concert or movie, mementos are a nearly ubiquitous item owned or acquired at one point in time by almost every consumer.Chapter 1 focuses on why and when consumers desire mementos of experiences. While recent research suggests that the consumption of experiences compared to material goods is on the rise and furthermore leads to greater happiness, many experiences are still frequently accompanied by the consumption of material goods, most notably in the form of mementos. Existing accounts of why consumers acquire such mementos focus on the reminiscing utility and memory benefits that mementos provide. This research proposes that mementos also alleviate sadness that arises from the ending of a positive experience. Based on this understanding of mementos, this research further proposes that consumers are more likely to desire mementos when the end of an experience is approaching and feel sadness associated with that ending. These hypotheses are supported across five studies using a combination of methodologies, including laboratory experiments, field surveys, and field experiments, that encompass various experiences (football games, college, and vacations) and mementos (ticket stubs, photos, and mugs). This research offers practical insights to marketers on how to encourage product purchases, and provides novel and relevant insights into advancing our understanding of the co-consumption of experiences and material goods.Building on the previous chapter showing that mementos reduce the negative affect associated with the end of a positive experience, Chapter 2 explores how mementos may also affect the emotions from giving up items. Existing literature suggests that affective reaction contributes to the endowment effect; if mementos lessen negative affective reaction, then having a memento of an endowment should also weaken the endowment effect. This research demonstrates that mementos decrease selling prices and increase willingness to part with an endowment in three studies. Thus, this research not only identifies mementos as a moderator of this much-studied phenomenon, but also contributes to understanding the much-debated psychology underlining the endowment effect by providing additional evidence for affective reaction as one component of the endowment effect. Chapter 3 examines consumer happiness and well-being from mementos. Recent research suggests an experiential advantage in which consumers derive greater happiness from discretionary spending on experiences compared to material items. As material items that are also closely associated with experiences, mementos present an interesting point of comparison for both experiential and material purchases. While this research partly replicates earlier findings that discretionary spending on experiences makes consumers happier than spending on material items, the effect…

▼ Screening mammography is an important tool in the early detection of breast cancer. Cancer can be detected earlier through the use of mammography, resulting in decreased breast cancer mortality. However, several deterrents to mammography have been identified, including attitudinal barriers. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to describe various factors such as trait affect and personal characteristics expected to be associated with a woman's experience of pain or discomfort during screening mammography. In addition, sensations experienced during the mammogram were described. Using a Preprocedure Questionnaire and a Postprocedure Questionnaire, developed for this study, as well as a measure of trait affect (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS)), the women (N = 99) rated several variables believed to influence the experience of pain or discomfort during mammography. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients. Mammography pain was not related to a previous mammogram, family history, weight, cup size, menstrual history, hormone replacement, caffeine ingestion, waiting time, technician, time of day, machine, number of pregnancies, breastfeeding history, breast pain prior to mammography, or trait negative/positive affectivity. However, as expected, pain and the rating of mammography as being uncomfortable were highly positively related, as were mammogram pain and the likelihood that pain would prevent women from seeking another mammogram. The sensations most frequently reported during screening mammography included pressure, pulling, stretching, pinching, and crushing

Psychology February 2017AbstractBackground: Therapeutic
relationships in psychiatry services have been shown to have a
significant impact on outcomes for people in severe mental
distress. Service user experience-based studies consistently show
relationships are an important factor in either helping or
hindering recovery. Few studies have conducted a detailed
exploration into the interpersonal mechanisms within these
relationships by asking service users directly about what emotional
impact these relationships have had on them. This is important
knowledge for improving the quality of mental healthcare for people
in severe mental distress.Aims: The purpose was to co-create a
piece of research with a service user organisation that explored
services users’
experiences and perceptions of helpful and
hindering relationships with mental health practitioners. The aim
was to gain a greater understanding of the components in the
relationship that brought about psychological change. Little
research about relationships in psychiatry settings has been
conducted in collaboration with service users outside of
government-led mental health services. Participants: Eight
participants were recruited from the service user organisation. The
participants self-reported as having a mental health problem. Seven
of the eight participants had long-term experience of using
psychiatry services.Method: This research was service
user-informed. The data was collected using single in-depth
interviews focused on service users’ views of their relationships
with mental health practitioners. Interpretative Phenomenological
Analysis (IPA) methodology was used to analyse the data and explore
the participants’ lived
experiences of relationships in mental
health services.Findings: The main themes identified were ‘Trying
to survive: am I a person or just an object in the system’,
‘Traumatic
experiences and relationships’ and ‘Transformative
relationships’. The findings showed the transformative components
of these relationships were power, security and identity. The
findings highlighted how the participants experienced a
relationship to the system of psychiatry through their
relationships with staff. Conclusions: How the components of power,
security and identity were managed by practitioners determined
whether relationships helped or hindered recovery. The
responsibility for relationships in psychiatry needs to be
broadened beyond the interpersonal relationship provided by
practitioners. The systemic institution of psychiatry based on
statutory control, risk aversion, the biomedical model and under
resourcing were a cause of many of the problems in relationships in
psychiatry settings. Keywords: Mental health, psychiatry,

▼ Advances in instructional practices have not kept up with the changing educational needs of today’s learners. Ubiquitous technologies permeate students’ lives and as such, the traditional classroom is at odds with the needs of digital learners. This research used a case study approach to investigate teacher practices in the flipped classroom. The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model that utilizes technologies to move the lecture outside of the classroom, thereby freeing up class time to allow for practice, collaboration, and extension in a student-centered learning environment. The intent of this record of study was to examine veteran teachers’ practices and perceptions when flipping their classes for the first time, and to try to determine the factors that contribute to effective implementation of the model. The findings suggest that teachers perceive that a student-centered learning environment, in which the focus is on learning as opposed to the delivery of instruction, resulted in an increase in student engagement and understanding. Recommendations for further research include examining the model across
subject lines and investigating how teachers adjust their practices as they continue with the model in subsequent years.

▼ Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are stressful life events that occur during development. It is well-established that ACE exposure has negative downstream implications for a broad range of health-related behaviors, ultimately hastening mortality. Underlying mechanisms linking the experience of early life adversity with poor health remain less understood, however, and thus potential targets for intervention remain elusive. This work seeks to fill an important theoretical gap in the ACE literature by evaluating whether executive function (EF) constitute a biologically-plausible mediating mechanism in this causal pathway. To do so, two separate studies were conducted. In Study 1, undergraduate students completed measures of ACE exposure, EF, health-risk behaviors (e.g., smoking, drug and alcohol use, unsafe sexual practices), and psychopathology (e.g., anxiety, depression). Multivariate modeling determined that executive dysfunction in daily life mediated the relationship between childhood adversity exposure and current mental health concerns. EF did not mediate the effect between ACEs and health-risk behaviours. Study 2 sought to replicate and extend this work by narrowing the focus of health-risk behaviours to those most relevant for an undergraduate population (i.e., risky alcohol-related behaviours), and incorporating behavioural measures of EF in addition to self-report questionnaires. EF difficulties in daily life, but not on in-lab tasks, mediated the relationship between ACEs and psychopathology symptoms. The relationship between ACEs and risky alcohol use was not mediated by EF. These results partially support a neurodevelopmental model of ACE exposure vis-à-vis future health, focusing on the role of EF.

▼ The psychosis phenotype is thought to exist on a continuum, such that the same symptoms experienced by individuals diagnosed with psychotic disorders can also manifest in the general population to a less severe degree. The subclinical psychotic-like experiences reported by healthy individuals share a number of risk factors with psychotic disorders and confer greater risk of developing a psychotic disorder. Thus, healthy individuals with psychotic-like experiences comprise a valid population in which to study the underlying mechanisms of clinically significant psychotic symptoms. In this thesis, we aimed to further our understanding of psychotic-like experiences and the individuals who report them. We explored the relationships between tasks measuring different aspects of self-awareness and self-reported psychotic-like experiences using data obtained from 30 university students. We found that greater sensitivity to the difference between one’s own voice and another person’s voice predicted fewer symptoms of persecutory ideation. Additionally, we found that greater tendency to misattribute one’s own voice to an external source predicted greater symptoms of persecutory ideation.

▼ With the advancements in technology, there has been a significant reduction in the classical risk factors at the workplace like biological, chemical and physical harms. But with the turn of the era, much attention has been focused on psychosocial stressors at work which are thought to affect employees’ occupational functioning and health. Amongst all healthcare professionals, nurses are the most likely to be assaulted. Moreover, violence towards mental health nurses has been both a reality and concern due to increasingly violent patient population and the devastating effects of violence on the victim.
The study aims to explore and describe mental health nurses’
experiences of patient assaults. Thirteen Registered Nurses and one Enrolled Nurse working in different nursing positions within the Southern District Health Board (Otago region) - Mental Health Services were interviewed using a semi structured interview format. The data gathered from these interviews was interpreted using thematic analysis and coded into 24 sub-themes. The sub-themes were related to the sequence and impact of assaults on the participants. Through an ongoing interpretative process, three over-arching themes emerged. The themes were analysed further to allow conceptual meanings to be interpreted relating to the
experiences of patient assaults.
The major findings of the study related to the nature and impact of assaults and supportive strategies associated with violence against mental health nurses. Perpetrator risk factors include mental health disorders, substance abuse and situational crises. The injuries sustained by the nurses include lacerations, head injuries, dislocations, asphyxia and bruises. Psychological harm has also occurred including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Some of the injuries sustained have required weeks of recovery. In other cases, nurses have chosen to change areas of practice because of their fears and concerns. Protective strategies for combating negative consequences of violence include practicing self-defence, social support, reporting violent activity or threats of violence to authority and police and a supportive and consultative workplace culture with access to counselling services and assistance in all aspects including finances.
Although physical injuries heal relatively quickly, emotional and psychological wounds linger for longer and can interfere with personal and professional lifestyles for months or years after the incident. Employers need to provide better support services to health care professionals who are assaulted and the legal system needs to acknowledge that assaults against nurses is a violation of human rights and violence is not to be tolerated as part of working in mental healthcare services.

▼ The goals of this study were to centralize the voices of Black Canadian male student-athletes by investigating their experiences as students, athletes, Black males and children of immigrant parents, and examining how these experiences might contextualize their transition out of university sport. Qualitative interviews with 20 former and current Black Canadian student-athletes were conducted using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a methodological framework. Several of the participants described the racial, athletic and academic stereotypes that shaped their experiences, illustrating, in some cases, the influence of the Black American culture on Black Canadians.
The analysis focused on how the interview participants interpreted their experiences and how stereotypes were used to make sense of their university and transition experiences. Some participants rejected the stereotypes evoked, some challenged them in an attempt to prove them wrong, while others used them to “act more Black”. Furthermore, the degree to which these stereotypes interacted with their transition experiences centered around autonomy, the emulation of role models and of developing career opportunities highlighted the initiative displayed by most of these student-athletes. The intersection of these factors, combined with their immigrant parents’ inexperience navigating the Canadian university system, forced most of these young men to transition out of university and varsity athletics on their own.

experiences of Māori social workers within government, non-government, Māori, and iwi (tribal) social service organisations. Kaupapa Māori and Narrative methods are used to capture the current practices of 26 Māori social workers, as well as the level of support received from these organisations. One area of interest in this study is the extent to which tikanga (custom) changes to fit the organisation and how much the organisation changes to fit the tikanga.
Findings include the identification of the motivations for Māori to become social workers and their diverse identities. Māori social workers have developed a range of practices that have positive results for Māori whānau and are underpinned by tikanga Māori.
This research highlights ways organisations are currently supporting Māori social work practices. It provides recommendations concerning ways organisations can be better equipped to support Māori social workers to use their practices for the benefit of Māori whānau.

▼ Not all disabilities are the same and the way that society may respond to people with disabilities depends on their “disability” and how their body deviates from the appearance norms of society. People with disabilities constitute a significant portion of the South African population. A body of research and physical evidence shows that people with disabilities may face certain obstacles or limitations in fulfilling a normal life. Obstacles include perceptions of disabilities, negative stigma and attitudes, barriers to an environment which is accessible for people with disabilities, and constructions of ableism. In a way, these obstacles influence the way people with disabilities construct their identity. Beyond this, the voices of people with disabilities are not always heard and their personal
experiences are not always given political recognition.
This research aimed to explore how a group of students living with a physical or visual disability constructed their identities in their environment or society. A feminist qualitative method was conducted. The study focused on the
experiences and perceptions of nineteen to twenty-seven year old female and male students with disabilities. Out of the six participants, two were coloured, three were black and one participant is classified as coloured, but identifies as biracial. A semi-structured interview was used for data collection and a Qualitative Thematic Analysis was used to analyse the data. Social constructionism and intersectionality were useful theoretical approaches adopted in exploring the lived
experiences of students with disabilities.
The results of this study revealed that students with disabilities find living with a disability as not being a barrier to living a fulfilling life. Students with disabilities construct their identities in a way that frees them from ideologies which shape the experience of disability in a negative way. However, the study revealed that negative barriers to identity construction still exist. These barriers come in the form of negative perceptions and stigma of disability, ableism and the medical model. The study further revealed that when the lived
experiences of students with disabilities are understood through the lens of gender, race and class, these social divisions overlap and are cumulative on the effects of student’s
experiences. The one major barrier in identity construction that the study revealed is the negative social perceptions of disability. The way in which students feel that they belong in their society is representative of how they respond to negative social constructions of disability.

▼ The purpose of this study was to explore the counselling aspects perceived to be helpful and unhelpful by rape survivors in South Africa. While there is some existing South African literature on rape and the efficacy of rape treatments, very few studies exist which focus on rape counselling from the survivor’s perspective. Exploring the subjective
experiences of counselling from a rape survivor’s point of view allowed us to further our theoretical understanding of mediational processes in counselling, test our understanding of existing theories and to also contribute to improving counselling techniques. This study was conducted using a qualitative research approach. Semi-structured interviews with 5 adult participants who had survived a rape experience and who had sought and concluded counselling at a local rape crisis centre were conducted. Interview transcripts were analysed using an interpretative phenomenological approach (IPA) and relevant themes and sub-themes that emerged from these transcripts were interpreted and discussed. The majority of helpful counselling aspects centred on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the counsellor and the rape survivor. Specific aspects relating to the counsellor’s personality as well as the way in which certain techniques were implemented in counselling were described as facilitating the restoration of survivors’ sense of dignity as well as contributing to an increased sense of connection and trust following the trauma. Important considerations for a South African context included the provision of practical and social support, follow up counselling and interventions that increase survivors sense of safety. This is likely to benefit South African survivors who may not have adequate access to resources, and therefore health services needed for recovery, as well as those who are at risk for coming into contact with the perpetrator. The inclusion of these aspects into future rape counselling programmes will likely contribute to a more holistic and meaningful counselling experience for rape survivors in South Africa.

▼ Lack of knowledge and skills among health care providers for provision of integrated TB/HIV activities for better health outcomes for co-infected patients is a public health concern. A qualitative, non-experimental, explorative and descriptive research design
based on the phenomenological philosophical tradition by Heidegger to broaden hermeneutics was conducted. The study was conducted at Mopani district to explore and describe the
experiences of eligible nurse managers relating to the implementation of the TB/HIV activities at management level. A purposive sample of 14 participants was recruited and consent form obtained. An unstructured interview
guide, with a grand tour question, was used to conduct face to face individual interviews. Tesch’s method of analysis was employed until two themes, five categories and ten subcategories emerged from the data. The major findings were on challenges experienced by nurse mangers such as shortage of resources, poor planning, lack of
support by management and patient related challenges. Recommendations were based on the findings to encourage staff retention strategies, adequate funding for TB control programs, support by management, co-joint planning, team work and effective
tracing strategies.

▼ The purpose of study was to explore and describe the student nurses’
experiences of teaching and learning through simulation. The study was conducted at one public college of nursing located in the city of Tshwane in the Gauteng province of South Africa. A quantitative exploratory and descriptive design was used to achieve the objectives of the study. The selected population comprised second year student nurses registered for the programme of education and training leading to registration as a nurse (general, psychiatric and community) and Midwife (R425, 1985; paragraph (iii) as amended) at the selected college of nursing. The number of registered second year student nurses was 250, and it was found to be manageable and adequate for data analysis. Consequently, the whole population was included in the survey and no sampling procedures were carried out. Data were collected by means of a self-administered structured questionnaire and STATA 14 program was used for data analysis.
According to the results of the study, student nurses’
experiences of teaching and learning through simulation were positive. The results showed that teaching and learning through simulation led to significant increases in knowledge and skills acquisition among student nurses who took part in the study. In addition, the student nurses’ attitude to teaching and learning through simulation were positive. However, based on the findings of the literature review on trends and best practice standards for simulation, it is recommended that the college introduces high virtual technology simulation as it is only using low and medium fidelity simulation. This will ensure that the college is up to date with trends and best practice standards for simulation, and for improving simulation teaching learning outcomes for large number of student nurses.

▼ This research set out to explore the scholastic
experiences of immigrant learners at a
secondary school in Sydenham. Participants were immigrant children from the
Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi. They were aged between thirteen and
eighteen years old, and had all resided in South Africa for less than ten years. The study
adopted a qualitative methodology using a narrative inquiry approach. To ensure valid
data, one-on-one interviews, a focus-group discussion and observations were conducted,
as well as document analysis of a diary I asked participants to keep for the duration of
the data collection period. This study was based on Ogbu’s (1978) cultural ecological
theory of minority academic achievement and Fredrickson’s (1998) broaden-and-build
theory.
A few findings emerged from the study. Firstly, it was found that language played a
critical role regarding academic and social acceptance at secondary school level.
Learners who did not grow up being exposed to English (the language of instruction)
were disadvantaged academically and often required translation from other peers who
spoke their native language. Furthermore, immigrant learners were often excluded from
social groups at school due to the fact that they could not speak a South African
indigenous language (in this case, isiZulu). These findings supported existing literature
regarding the linguistic challenges faced by immigrant students.
The second finding that emerged from the study was that a sense of belonging was a
crucial factor that determined the scholastic
experiences of immigrant learners. Learners
who felt isolated at school (either academically or socially) displayed poor academic
performance and learners who felt a sense of belonging performed at a higher level.
The concept of acculturation was the third theme examined in this study. All
participants felt that they could not understand the culture of the South African students.
Some of them found behaviours such as smoking, gambling, underage drinking, wearing
revealing clothing and teenage sexual activity to be abhorrent, and as a result, did not
want to be part of the dominant culture. Others were able to accept these aspects of
South African culture without emulating them. The two theories used hold that voluntary immigrants are generally higher achievers;
however, this study showed that this is not always the case. An involuntary immigrant
was able to achieve high marks, in contradiction to what Ogbu (1978) postulates. The
findings were consistent with Fredrickson’s broaden-and-build theory because learners
who possessed a high level of resilience produced far superior academic results
compared with learners with low levels of resilience.

The Experiences of Omani Mothers Caring for Children with

▼ Background: Cerebral palsy is the most common type
of childhood neurological and developmental disability (Dababneh,
2013; Rosenbaum et al., 2006; Shikako-Thomas et al., 2009; Waters
et al., 2005). It is estimated that a total of 2 to 2.5 of every
1000 live births are of children who have CP (Rosenbaum, 2003;
Schiariti et al., 20014), resulting in a considerable number of
parents and families who are raising a child with CP (Reid et al.,
2011). The review of the literature identified that globally
mothers were most often the primary caregivers of these children
and as a result they experienced several physical, social and
emotional challenges. It was also identified that culture played an
important role in shaping mothers'
experiences. However, there is
an absence of qualitative studies that explore the
experiences of
mothers caring for children with CP in Arabic countries in general
and none in Oman in particular. Aim: The aim of this study was to
develop a theory that explains the experience of mothering a child
with CP in the Omani culture. Methodology: Charmaz's (2014)
approach to grounded theory research informed sampling, data
collection and the analysis process. The study was conducted in the
two largest governorates in Oman (Muscat and North Batinah). 23
Omani mothers caring for children (5 to 18 years) diagnosed with CP
were recruited through purposive and theoretical sampling from a
hospital and five community-based rehabilitation centres.
Semi-structured interviews including 23 face-to-face interviews and
six follow-up telephone interviews were used for data collection.
Findings: The findings of the study suggest that the beliefs of
Islam and the Omani culture influenced the mothers' daily
experiences in caring for their children with CP. "Being a patient
(sabir) mother" is the theory that was developed from the data and
explains the mothers’ perceptions and beliefs about being a
mother of a child with CP and their actions and roles in caring for
their child with CP. This theory links the two subcategories:
"patience (sabr) as faith" and "practising patience (sabr)".
"Patience (sabr) as faith" presents the mothers' religious beliefs
and how these beliefs encouraged them to accept with patience
(sabr) being a mother of a child with CP. "Practising patience
(sabr)" explains how the mothers were patient (sabir) in performing
their actions and roles in caring for their children with CP.
Discussion: The study revealed a unique cultural experience of
caring for a child with CP for mothers. Religious beliefs and
social values appeared to play an important role in the mothers'
experiences of caring for their child with CP. Islamic religious
beliefs were a major source of emotional support that transformed
the mothers'
experiences of caring for a child with CP from one of
hardship to one of value. In addition, the Omani culture was an
important source of support that resulted in the mothers appearing
to have a more positive experience of caring for a child with CP
when compared to the literature describing the…
