▼ This dissertation demonstrates, in multiple ways, that
nanotechnology can be used to engineer effective solutions. This
dissertation employs the colloidal route for synthesis of elemental
nano-selenium; in various novel formulations for biological and
environmental applications. Here we demonstrate the advantage of
these novel formulations and their nanoscale in effectively
managing the risk from adverse effects of selenium while
successfully extracting the benefits offered by these
nano-formulations. A novel formulation of selenium-carbon composite
nanoparticles has been synthesized and characterized, by growing
nano-selenium particles on the surface of supramolecular carbon
nanoparticles in suspension (in situ), with very high loading
capacities. We demonstrated that the selenium-carbon composite
nanoparticles show greater cytotoxicity to malignant mesothelioma
cells as compared to selenite and BSA stabilized colloidal
nano-selenium. Considering the complexity of MM presentation this
new form has significant potential to be used for targeted therapy.
We have also created a novel nano-selenium coating on titanium for
improving orthopedic applications where anti-cancer properties are
desired. We have demonstrated the fabrication and cell response for
this novel material identifying a key (surface) dose window in
which cancerous osteoblast functions are inhibited, while healthy
osteoblast functions are promoted. We have also demonstrated a
reactive barrier approach which appears promising for reducing Hg
vapor exposure from CFLs, and could be the basis for a suite of
products tailored for various stages of the CFL life-cycle. Here,
the small amounts of high-capacity nanoselenium required to
suppress vapor release from CFLs, combined with the low
bioavailability of the elemental form suggest that health risks
from direct exposure to nSe sorbents can be engineered to be
minimal.

▼ Lusaka sits on a limestone rock formation which makes recharge as well as pollution of groundwater very easy due to the presence of channels created by solution weathering. Informal/unplanned settlements where waste disposal facilities are non-existent are potential groundwater contamination areas. George Township area of Lusaka is an unplanned or informal settlement where supply of water is provided by Lusaka Water and Sewage Company through stand pipes. However, it was found that at least one percent of a sample of three hundred and fifty people interviewed in 2001 indicated that they entirely depended on shallow wells for their domestic water supply despite the availability of an ultramodern water supply infrastructure provided through a JICA grant. The quality of the water in the shallow wells has been largely unknown. A study to monitor the quality of the water in the shallow wells in the area was instituted in April 2006 and ended in April 2007. Results obtained do indicate that the water is highly contaminated with waste materials especially human waste. The source of this contamination seems to point to the pit latrines which are the method of choice in the disposal of human excreta in the area. With high levels of total coli forms (TC) as well as fecal coli forms (FC) and Escherichia coli, human health problems such as those related to gastro intestinal problems including diarrhoeal diseases, are a reality in the area. Further, from the preliminary results, it seems that metals such as Lead and Cadmium are also in concentrations above acceptable levels. These have serious health effects such as damage to the nervous system (Lead) as well as those related to damage of the kidneys (Cadmium). The "blue baby" syndrome in neonates arising from taking water with high nitrate concentrations such as the one in George Township area seems a real possibility. Measures to reduce groundwater contamination from pit latrines are necessary. Those proposed range from design and construction of pit latrines to use of other types of disposal facilities as well as education of the communities. Other measures relate to treatment of water at household level to make it suitable to drink.

▼ Forests can help in regulating local climate which, in turn, can contribute to the global
climate situation. The many environmental problems that the world is faced with have
reached alarming proportions. Deforestation is one of these environmental problems.
Deforestation refers simply to the loss of forestland or, as defined by FAO (1978), as
the permanent destruction of indigenous forests arid woodlands excluding exotic
forests such as plantations. The major effects of deforestation include deterioration of ecological systems that result in negative effects on production and development. This research reports on a study conducted in a rural farming community in Zambia called Zemba farming scheme. It aims to explore the relationships between the
community and their forests as well as to articulate environmental education
dimensions that can influence community participation in forest resource management
among Virginia tobacco farmers. The study established specific estimates of forest-wood depletion in Zemba farming
block as a result of tobacco growing. The aim of the estimate was to investigate the
extent and causes of deforestation in Zemba farming block. Once these data was
generated, the study proceeded to use the data to design an environmental education
programme for the study community. In this study the following two questions were explored, firstly, what is the extent of
deforestation in Zemba farming block? Secondly, why did deforestation occur and
how did it affect the people living in the area? In order to address the aim of this study, the following specific objectives guided the study; to generate baseline data on the relationship between rural tobacco farmers and the forest in their vicinity to provide an understanding of the principal processes underlying deforestation in Zemba farming block. At the time of this study in 2008, it had been discovered that Zambia was losing about 444 000 ha of forest each year and that hi the period 2000 - 2005, it increased by 10% per year. This was a serious contribution towards deforestation. Such an estimate of wood harvest was a challenge that this study wished to address at a general level. Tree census conducted in the area revealed that the forest was a 'young forest' which means that most of the big trees had been harvested for tobacco use or other uses. The largest tree of the endangered species, Jubernardia paniculata, only measured about 46cm in circumference; most of them measured less than 30cm.It was also clear from the findings that the farmers in the study community were not
willing to stop growing Virginia tobacco for other less destructive types of tobacco
such as barley for reasons that Virginia tobacco was quite profitable even when grown
on a small portion. They also earned early cash and in foreign currency as Virginia
tobacco was quoted in foreign currency on the stock market. The respondents in this study only focused on short term benefits and ignored the long term effects that this kind of tobacco farming brings…

▼ Agriculture is one of the most ancient and
significant sectors of India, the only means of living for almost
two-third of the employed class in India. It has occupied almost 43
percent of India s geographical area. India is one of the major
cotton producing countries, ranking 3rd after USA and China. Cotton
accounts per 30 percent of agricultural Gross Domestic Product
(GDP) in India and has the largest cotton area of 20 million acres.
It provides livelihood to more than 60 million people in India. As
agriculture is closely associated with the environment, it has a
major impact on land use, soil, water biodiversity and the
landscape and the intensive agriculture has disrupted ecological
balance. Green revolution in India was ushered with the increased
use of pesticide and increased input of agricultural fertilizers
and using better farm techniques in spite of increase in food
production, many of agriculture farmers of India are not aware of
the environmental hazards occurred due to the usage of pesticides.
The farmers of India are using one-third of pesticides that are
consumed in third world countries. The widespread use and disposal
of agriculture pesticides by farmers, large plantations and the
general public causes environmental contamination. In addition, the
economic loss incurred as a result of environmental pesticide
pollution is enormous. Many of the pesticides used are highly toxic
resulting in tens of thousands of users being injured or dying
every year. Government of India based on the recommendations of the
Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), introduced Bacillus
thuriengensis (Bt) cotton in March, 2002. According to government
authorities, Bt-cotton offers a promising solution to the serious
problems viz. environmental damage, human health hazards and poor
yields of the cotton farmers. Keeping in view of the above, the
present study has been designed to evaluate the environmental
benefits, pesticides usage pattern in Btcotton farming, effect of
pesticide usage on human health.

▼ The upper ocean is the most variable and
dynamically active part of the marine environment that couples the
underlying ocean to the atmosphere above through the transfer of
mass, momentum and energy. The oceanic surface layer assumes many
shapes and forms. More common among others are, inversion layers,
mixed layers, sonic layers, and barrier layers. The thickness of
mixed layer is an important parameter in determining the quantity
of heat that is available for exchange with atmosphere which is
capable of triggering several ocean-atmosphere coupled processes.
Mixed layer also plays an important role in determining the
chlorophyll biomass and biological productivity of the upper ocean.
Also ocean being almost opaque to electromagnetic radiation, sound
is the only means to probe the ocean interior. Further, acoustic
system plays a very important role in many civilian and military
strategic applications. The depth of sonic layer plays an important
role in refraction of sound rays traveling in the ocean, which in
turn affects the sonar detection ranges. The present work is an
attempt to study basin-scale variability of the mixed layer and
sonic layer in the Arabian Sea, their inter relationship and
factors responsible for it. In literature though sonic layer is
considered almost equal to mixed layer, in this thesis a study is
made, to understand how tightly these two are coupled during
different seasons. After the introduction in Chapter 1 of the
thesis, various data set and methodologies used for the work in
this thesis is presented in Chapter 2. Data for the proposed work
mainly comprises of in situ temperature and salinity profile data
from the Argo floats acquired during the period 2002 2008. From the
above source 15585 profiles of temperature and salinity were
extracted. All the profiles were quality controlled by passing them
through 18 quality control checks as per the guide lines
implemented by the International Argo Data Management
Team.

▼ The explosive increase in vehicular traffic in
India has relegated the pedestrian to subways, overbridges and even
the vehicular carriageway. A pedestrian is often neglected in the
overall scheme of transportation planning, and design. With a major
proportion of trips in Indian cities being performed by foot, it is
only logical that serious thought should be given to the various
issues relevant to pedestrians such as safety, comfort and
amenities. The objective of this research is to formulate an
evaluation method which would resolve the limitations of the
existing methods, as most of them are unable to appraise the entire
gamut of the walking experience. Numerical standards fail to
evaluate the plethora of activities characterizing the pedestrian
environment. The proposed method seeks to analyse the pedestrian
environment from a qualitative perspective. The literature review
assisted in classifying qualitative aspects of urban pedestrian
spaces, mainly, safety, comfort, convenience and the quality of the
urban
environment. Qualitative evaluation criteria have been framed
at two distinct levels the overall and the detailed. The analysis
of the overall level characteristics would provide a broad picture
of the existing
environment and help in enhancing the overall
levels of safety, comfort, convenience and quality of the urban
pedestrian
environment. The method was tested on streets in
Chennai, using evaluation checklists. Graphical representations and
statistical analysis of the evaluation data helped in identifying
the deficiencies. Streets of diverse uses can be analysed.
Subjectivity is a limitation which can be greatly reduced by the
precise definition of each parameter and utilizing different
researchers to evaluate the same stretch. The application of the
method reveals a lot of shortcomings in the pedestrian realm, many
of which would not have been revealed with quantitative techniques.
This research thus validates the rational.

▼ Management of forest resources is not only determined by ecologic, economic, or
demographic factors but also influenced by a heterogeneous set of institutions and their
arrangement at various levels particularly of local level. Local level institutions broadly
comprehend as many institutions, both formal and informal, which are directly engaged in
forest resources management and/or use. A study was conducted to assess the influence of
local level institutions, community and forest resource attributes on the use and management
of forest resources in Yayu forest of Illubabor Zone, Southwest Ethiopia. The forest is
recently nominated by the government as a UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere area and efforts
have been made for in-situ conservation of wild Coffee arabica populations. Data were
collected through households’ interviews (100 household heads), focus group discussions,
key-informants interview and personal observation. An Institutional Analysis Development
(IAD) framework was employed for analyzing institutional aspect of forest resource
management at local level. The data were analyzed using descriptive and qualitative data
analysis techniques. The study findings revealed the existence of various formal and
customary institutions that influence forest management and use in the study area. The
formal institutions contributed to forest resource management in performing collective
choice level activities such as alienation and exclusion and determine operational level
activities. On the other hand, Informal institutions such as council of elders, religious
institutions, Jiga, Dabo and Iddir, were involved in operational level activities such as time
of forest resource harvesting, time of marketing, time coffee planting, and clearing
undergrowths. Additionally, informal institutions are also used as a plat forum by
government to initiate formal dialogue to create awareness about forest resources use,
management and conservation. Attribute of the community (dependence on the resource and
group size) and the forest (clear boundary, extractability, and excludability) are important
incentives to the community to use, manage, and conserve the forest resources. Along with
the inefficient and complex institutional setup, the prevailing poverty and lack of forest
management guidelines are the major critical problems of conservation of Yayu Forest and
it’s environ. Preparation of forest management plan and building the capacity of formal
institutions at local level should be enacted to enhance monitoring and sanctioning of the
forest resources. The recently initiated biosphere reserve model may improve conservation
and sustainable use of Yayu forest if appropriately implemented. Apparently, natural
resources management like forest can’t be possible without the proper recognition and
involvement of the informal institutions in the study area.

▼ Water is one of the basic materials that make life possible on earth. Providing access to clean &
adequate water supply facilities and improving the performance of the sub- sector directly reduce the
morbidity & mortality rates of population. It also increases the productive capacity of the
economically active population. An insufficient access to water; on the other hand, is not only bad for
health but also contributes to a poor food security and a lagging social development. The Ethiopian
government at the national level in general & the Benishangul- Gumu Region in particular is striving
to enhance the sectors development including the improvement of safe water supply to the people.
Homosha is one of the 20 woredas of BGR where water sector institutes and other partners were
working to promote access to clean water supply. Through the efforts made a number of physical
facilities have been developed. But their sustainable utilization became a great challenge to achieve
intended outcomes. Schemes were frequently seen to interrupt and the people of the area seen
suffering from this in an area where schemes are available mostly near the backyard of the residents.
This significant problem with the objective of accessing reasons existed behind the problem has
necessitated to conduct this study. Social, economic, institutional, & technical components of each
influencing factors have been focused. Users, respective institutions & their water development
partners were included for their information & feedback for the study. Literatures have been
reviewed. On site observation at the watering points and a focus group discussion with water users
committees has been made.
From the attempts made, seasonality of most developed schemes creating a heavy burden on to the
remaining schemes was found the major problem rooted as a consequence of weak supervision made
on construction. As the approach in almost all of the cases was supply driven with a very weak
participation and involvement of the intended users, creating the required sense of ownership filling
has been missed. Thus users have given little attention to care and to contribute towards the
maintenance and well being of the schemes. The poor communication and integration among
partners and institutes has contributed for the unfair and uneven distribution of the schemes among
the communities where this in some areas has brought utilization of fewer schemes beyond their
carrying capacity. Poor financial management, unavailability of spare parts in the nearby markets
and lack of sufficient institutional support have also got un- undermined contribution for the
encountered problem. Therefore for promoting and sustaining the access and coverage it is
recommended that a considerable measure need to be taken to the suggested limitations and gabs in
order to maintain the available and to be effective with the ones planned in the future.

▼ Abijiata Lake wetlands are situated in Abijiata-Shalla National Park (ASLNP)of Central Rift
Valley of Ethiopia. This wetland has contributing significant roles in providing ecosystem
functions and producing a number of products and services-that are socially and
economically important to the local community. They also support a large population of
migratory and residential waterfowl. The study was conducted to assess the challenges and
opportunities of Lake Wetland’s management;- and to recommendation future intervention
measures for long term sustainable use. Different methods were used to collect primary and
secondary data. The primary data were collected from 120 farm household; interviews and
focus group discussions with different social groups, and key informants .The sample
respondents were drawn from 3 kebeles adjacent to the lake wetlands. Moreover, land
use/land cover change detection analysis was also made using satellite images (of 1973,
1986, 2000 and 2009) and ground truth. Lake Abijiata and its wetlands provide the
necessary services for eco-tourism development and economic base for the local
communities. The result indicate that more than 83% of people depend on the wetlands for
different types of subsistence including fodder, fuel wood, mining and mineral salt
extraction. In recent years, however, these wetlands are degrading progressively due to
natural and human factors. Farmland expansion, sand mining, mineral salt extraction, over
use of water for irrigation and other development intervention like soda Ash factory are
among the major threats of wetland management. The land use/land cover change detection
analysis of satellite images between 1973 and 2009 depicts that the wetland under the study
is continually converted to other land uses: there is a continuous expansion; for human
settlement from 3.20%in the year 1973 to 25.61%in 2009, and from 27.81% in the year 1973
to 44.54%in the year 2009 for croplands. Importantly, Acacia woodland and wetlands
around the lake were also reduced from 37.98% in 1973 to 18.02% in 2009 and from
31.01% in 1973 to 11.83% in 2009 respectively. Despite, the high dependence of the local
people on Abijiata wetland resources for their livelihood; however, these resources are
under continuous threats. Managing the wetland on the basis of basin concepts and
involving local people in alternative income generating activity has been suggested as a
means of reducing pressure on land use and also reducing the threat to Abijiata lake
wetlands .Furthermore, the focal policy working on wetlands promulgations of regulations
to govern wetland uses, capacity building for monitoring and control of wetland use
,integrated planning for water ,land ,forest resources utilization as well as wetland change
detection(the temporal and spatial variability of wetlands or LU/LC change
analysis)/monitoring seasonal changes, are recommended if possible.

▼ This study was conducted with the aim of assessing the adaptation strategies employed by pastoralists
and agro-pastoralist communities in the face of climate variability induced adverse effects or shocks in
two kebeles of Jigjiga wereda, Somali Regional States. The sustainable livelihood adaptation framework
approach was employed in combination to have a comprehensive and holistic understanding on the
various livelihood activities and adaptation strategies on the basis of data gathered through a
combination of qualitative research methods and the quantitative household survey. Even though the
adaptation strategies employed by pastoralists’ and agro-pastoralist communities greatly contributed to
curve of climate variability situations, the adaptation strategies employed by them were constrained by
various factors and the adaptation strategies are directly or indirectly depend on rainfall in the area.
Results obtained in the study revealed that the livelihood resources were deteriorating, livestock rearing
and crop productions were not the only viable means of livelihoods. Perhaps the pastoralists and agropastoralists
employed combinations of various strategies including joint adaptation practices.
Pastoralists have been employing livestock related adaptations in which restocking and increasing
livestock mix as the major adaptation strategies. On the other hand, agro-pastoralists have been
employing intercropping as a major way to adapt to crop related problems in the study areas. The
pastoralists and agro-pastoralists not only relied on Small ponds and “Birkas” to overcome water
related problems, but also engaged in soil and water conservation adaptation strategies to control soil
erosion and floods in the areas. However, the adaptation strategies were challenged by poverty, poor
infrastructure, inaccessibility to markets and information, no credit and saving services, and conflicts
over sharing resources which were highly affecting their adaptative capacities. In conclusion, this
research work come up with that the adaptation strategies to combat the climate variability induced
adverse effects or shocks in the study areas were not enough; it was a kind of self- adaptation which were
practiced in disorganized ways. Finally, this research argues that the self- adaptation strategies
employed by the pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities were constrained by the factors mentioned
above and the adaptation strategies were only for survival. To this end, their adaptation constraints
would be alleviated through interventions that comprehensively incorporate various dimensions. To
mention few: enhancing the understandings of pastoralists and agro-pastoralists on the variability
conditions of rainfall, temperature and seasonal variations and providing them information so that they
integrate it with their traditional knowledge; rehabilitation of the existing livelihood resources and
strategies in the areas; creating access and credit services; improving the accessibility and market
information; provision of veterinary…

▼ This study was conducted at Tehuledere in South Wollo. The main objective of the study was to assess
community perception and adaptive response to climate variability. Both primary and secondary sources
of data have been used in this study. By using stratified sampling 300 sample populations were selected
from three kebeles of the study area. Questionnaire was the main tool to collect data from the sample
population. Interview also applied to collect data from religious leaders, agricultural experts, and kebele
and woreda leaders. The data analyzed by using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The study has
shown that majority of participants were observed the existence of climate variability and signs of climate
variability, which include recurring drought and flood; shortage of rain fall; change in rainfall pattern,
territorial expansion of malaria, occurrence of new weeds and poor crop production yield etc. But
significant number (>50%) of participants believed that climate variability is caused by the natural
process and acts of God.
The study also revealed that, majority of the participants had understood the seriousness of climate
variability and the importance of climate issue for their live systems. How ever a significant number of
participants didn’t give attention to climate variability as equal as other environmental issues.
The effect of climate variability and extreme events perceived by participants include, land degradation,
deforestation, lost of crop and livestock production, loss of grazing land, destruction of infrastructures,
and expansion of diseases. Participants have their own adaptation methods to climate variability and
extreme events. The adaptation methods include, production of different crops, planting of special variety
crops, using of natural and chemical fertilizers, irrigation farming, planting of trees, and soil
conservation through terracing and check dam. As the study revealed that majority of adaptation methods
especially modern agricultural inputs and irrigation were practiced by limited number of participants.
The participants had also financial and training support supports from NGOs and governments. The
community had information accessibility through radio, agricultural experts and supervisors, but the
accessibility and adequateness of information not satisfactory to create awareness and adapt climate
variability.

▼ The main objectives of establishing cooperatives in the study area is to benefit the members by supplying
farm in puts at low cost using the economies of scale advantage and sell their produce at higher price so
then improve the livelihood of the community. Based on multi-stage sampling procedure a total of 120
respondents were selected from Sinana Woreda. Both primary and secondary data were employed for
this study. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaire. Accordingly,60 cooperative
members and 60 non cooperative members were included in the study. Secondary data pertinent to the
study were also collected from different sources to complement the limitation of primary information.
The statistical soft ware SPSS-16 version was employed to analyze the descriptive statistics of sample
respondents. Descriptive statistics such as percentages, means and standard deviations were applied to
examine the role played by cooperatives in terms of input distribution, out put marketing and other
services. The results of survey data indicated that cooperatives in Bale Zone are playing an encouraging
role in this regard. An econometric Model Called Multiple Linear Regression Model was applied to
identify the most dominant demographic, socio-economic socio economic; and institutional factors that
affect cooperatives cereal production. From a total of 13 explanatory variables included in the model, 9
variables were found to be significant. The role of demographic variables such as sex, age, marital status
and family size were hypothesized to influence households’ cereal production positively. The hypothesis
in this context was rejected. In the same manner, Socio-economic variables: namely, land size, access to
education and access to farm oxen were hypothesized to affect cooperatives’ agricultural production
positively. The hypothesis in this context was supported. With regard to institutional factors such as
access to credit, accesses to extension, the use of fertilizer and improved seeds were hypothesized to affect
cereal production positively. This hypothesis was accepted except the use of improved seed.
The empirical survey result from FGDs revealed that poor rural infrastructure, lack of adequate
agricultural credit, lack of awareness on the benefits of cooperative, and weak institutional capacity were
cited as some of the problems that hinder the growth and development of cooperatives. Thus, there is a
need to take corrective action to overcome these problems by the concerned bodies in order to boost up
the cereal production and productivity of the sample respondents. In the end, low participation and lack
of commitment on the sides of cooperative members and management committee in the study area were
found as crucial problems in the study area. Therefore, changing the attitudes of cooperative members
and non members towards their cooperatives through training and education is essential.

▼ At present, there are various laws in Ethiopia relevant to environmental pollution
control. However, the problem of pollution has not been controlled and continues to
adversely affect the
environment, the health, social and economic aspect of human
beings. Thus, a study towards the major causes for the lack of effective implementation of
the environmental pollution control legislation is important.
In order to achieve the objective of the study, literatures were reviewed, and
questionnaire, key informant interview and focus group discussions were used as main
research instruments. Evaluation packages were prepared; to measure the level of
prevailing institutional capacity, coordination, and awareness raising programs; based
on the relevant requirements stipulated under the national Environmental Pollution
Control Proclamation and on the basis of the standards issued by UNEP for African
countries.
The result has indicated that, lack of institutional capacity both from the side of EPA and
sectoral agencies, low/weak inter-institutional coordination between EPA and relevant
sectoral agencies and inadequate environmental awareness raising programs were
identified as major challenges for the proper implementation of the environmental
pollution control legislation. Thus, improving the institutional capacity of EPA and
relevant sectoral institutions, strengthening the coordination between relevant
institutions through creating an enabling
environment for multi-stakeholder partnership,
and enhancing the environmental awareness raising activities are recommended to
improve the implementation of the Environmental Pollution Control legislation.

▼ This paper analyzes the achievements of Micro and small Enterprises in improving the income
of urban poor and identifies the challenges they are encountering. The study is conducted in
Asella town- Oromia regional state, in two sub cities and on 44 enterprises. The subjects of the
study are operators of MSEs in the particular enterprises. Representative samples were selected
using both random and non-random sampling methods from which data were gathered, using
questionnaires and focus group discussions and then descriptive statistics and before and after
approach (paired sample T- test) of data analysis are employed. As a result, it is found that: the
program has created employment opportunity particularly to those jobless dwellers, there are
significant differences in operators’ income, expansion and growth is exhibited in growth
oriented enterprises, improvements are realized in; households’ fixed assets, access to education
and medical services after establishment of the business ventures. The findings of the study
revealed that Micro and small enterprises in the study area are playing a vital role in increasing
income , creating employment opportunities and generally improving the living conditions of
their operators. However, they are facing with various challenges and threats that could affect
their sustainable contributions to the proliferation of their overall benefits. These includes:
financial constraints, inadequate technical and managerial trainings, inadequate markets and
market linkages, high level of dependence on government projects, disagreement among
members and the like. Finally, for a better achievement of objectives of the program in the study
area, interventions such as: access to finance, appropriate supports to improve outputs (supply)
and market demand, and promoting a culture that supports and rewards entrepreneurship, need
to be undertaken.

▼ While conducting this research first, initial assessment and field observation,
consultation with different officials and concerned bodies was carried out to
visualize the status and shortage of water in Durame town. Based on walk over
survey, measured data, and information from different stakeholders, it is
observed that the town has critical water shortage and system problem in the
distribution and ancillary works. This water shortage problem has hindered
individual endeavors, micro-enterprises, hotels, institution and investments etc.
which are without or meager water supply. In this paper institutional,
socioeconomic, environmental and technical related problems are assessed and
discussed in detail. In light of the major identified problems recommendation are
suggested. It is proposed that redesigning the existing distribution system by
considering the proposed source as input; managing the proposed and the
existing well field from potential pollutant; developing and implementing
appropriate organizational structure parallel to the system can correct the
problem.

▼ Urban population with access to potable water is relatively better as compared to rural
population. However, this does not imply sufficient consumption level, consistent
availability, and distribution of water for most households. In Arba Minch town
households are experiencing problem of adequate and consistent water supply. The water
supply system is unable to supply water to some parts of the town while others obtain the
service on a shift basis (four days a week) especially in the dry seasons. Of eleven
kebeles in the town eight are in critical water problem. This paper looks into the water
supply system of the town and investigates the causes of the water supply shortage in the
town. Primary data were collected from 100 sample households through household
survey, from experts in the town WSSO and in the zonal water office through key
informant interviews, and from town water board members and other officials through
focus group discussions. Secondary data were collected from written documents like
technical reports, official records, etc. The results were related to quantity and quality
trends of water at the source, water demand increase trends, production and distribution
nature of the water supply system, and institutional capacity of the water supply service
office. The causes of the water supply shortage in the town include declining of the flow
amount of the existing source and demand increase in the hot climate; the down stream
water demand; demand increase caused by population pressure and economic
development activities; mismatch between the capacity of the water supply system, the
water in the pipe line and the existing water demand; design problems in the distribution
network; and weak institutional capacity of the water supply service office.Integrated and
continuous management of the recharge areas of the water source, giving due attention
for long term investments on water supply, collecting and managing all important data for
water supply designs, capacitating the WSSO both by material and human resources can
correct the problem.

▼ The way human action reshape the
environment pose a new cycle of mutual determination on the way people create and re-create their livelihood in line with the changes in their
environment . This must be analyzed interms of changes not only in their ecology but also in the emerging new social dynamics. In line with this assertion, this study examines the socio-economic and livelihood impacts of the disappearance of Lake Haramaya on the surrounding rural households and the households’ responses to such environmental catastrophe. Thus, the basic data used for the analysis were generated from 159 sample households through interviews and focus group discussions. Descriptive and bivariate methods of analysis were employed over time series data (i.e. 2005, 2006 and 2007). Besides, inter-group data comparison was used to demonstrate impacts as well as responses to such environmental shock.
Result of the impact analysis revealed that the disappearance of the lake has resulted in the loss of direct utilities the households used to generate from the lake. These include loss of water for livestock feeding, water for domestic consumption, irrigation and recreation. Besides, two direct livelihood sources, fishing and ferry renting, were lost along with the lake. The indirect impacts of the dry-up of the lake were manifested in conflict over water use, decrease in size of land under irrigation, and thus decline in production of chat and vegetables which were mainly cultivated by irrigation. All these ultimately caused decrease in household’s income.
Investigation into households’ response to water scarcity that was induced by the disappearance of the lake demonstrated that the main response to such shortfall was reclamation of underground water from previous bed of the lake. In addition, rain water harvesting is also a prevalent responsive measure among the households. However, as water table is continuously dropping and subsequent surge in the cost of digging water borehole, underground water is presently an option for those ‘resource rich’ households. On the other hand, this situation forced some households to use child labor which in turn resulted in school dropout.
Examination of inter-household variation in the implementation of water reclamation practices as a response was sought by logistic regression model. The result revealed that age of household head, household size, literacy status, land size, access to credit service and household’s anticipation to dry-up of the lake have significant and positive influence on household’s application of water reclamation measures as response to the disappearance of the lake, whereas access to off-farm income and fertilizer use have significant and negative effect.
On the basis of the empirical findings, institutional and policy intervention measures that are hoped to ease the pressure on the
environment are recommended. These include enacting and implementing policy towards sustainable use of open access resources and controlling population size. Besides, institutional interventions…

▼ The main purpose of this research work was to assess the effect of school
environment on students’ behavior and achievement in Kolfe Keranio sub-city government high schools. In order to serve this purpose, descriptive survey method of research was employed. There were 8 government high schools in the sub-city. From these 3 schools were randomly selected. In line with this, 3 kind of sampling technique were employed to select the participants. Firstly, teachers through stratified sampling. Secondly, students were selected purposively from students’ parlama. Thirdly, parents, principals, supervisors gender and library club members’ were selected by available sampling. Questionnaire, FGD and interview were employed to collect data for this study. Concerning the data analysis, the quantitative data were presented, analyzed and interpreted by triangulating with the qualitative data which were gathered through FGD and interview. In relation to this, data analysis methods such as frequency percentage, and mean score were employed to analyze the quantitative data. Eventually, based on the finding obtained, brief conclusions and recommendations were drawn. The study revealed that school
environment has both positive and negative effect on high school students’ of Kolfe Keranio sub-city, when schools were equipped with necessary amenities they contribute positively for students’ behavior and achievement and in adequate facility and poor relation between the concerned stake holders also contributing factors negatively. Similarly the study revealed that although there were adequate toilet buildings and rooms in sample high schools, they were no clean and filed with the necessary facilities. Therefore, the Toilet, water and library facilities ought to be supplied with necessary amenities by generating income from the community and cooperatively work with the concerned governmental organization. And there were no special sanitary facility for girls. Because of this reason most female students were obliged to leave the school for three up to five days during menstruation. On the other had the relation between students and teachers were found poor and schools are not open for students’ suggestions and the
environment is not participatory for students so as to enable them to contribute their idea on different issues that may affect their learning. However, there has to be democratic relationship between students, teachers, principals, parents and supervisors.

▼ Kenyan real estate includes all types of property ranging from single and multiple dwelling units residential developments, commercial (office space, retail space, shopping malls and hotel or restaurants), agricultural farm land and industrial blocks of (go-downs and warehouses, factories and light productions). The real estate development is a process by which initial land use of a designated neighbourhood or planning zone is transformed into new land use(s) in order to obtain the highest and best use of the land parcel(s). This development is mainly undertaken through change of use and extension of use through the approval by the local authority under the area of jurisdiction. The major challenges currently facing sustainability urban environment is the balancing of increased demand and supply for real estate property against sustainability in terms of adequate infrastructures and vegetation cover. The real estate developments in most of developing nations are led by demand rather than infrastructural capacity. This research project explores the relationship between the developments in real estate and sustainable urban environment within Nairobi City County since the urban area has experienced massive developments in real estate in terms of increased property investment. These high rise developments have stressed the existing environment in terms of infrastructure capacity and green spaces. This study shall try to address the prevalence and the nature of the developments in real estate; the causes of land use variations as developments; the effects of the real estate developments on infrastructure services provision and vegetation cover within the study area. The study also focus sustainable environment espects like; the carrying capacity of infrastructure; the integrity of the ecosystem and the biodiversity available. The literature was reviewed to determine on how real estate development affects the general urban areas, and the possible merits and demerit of development models under the study. The target population was about 43,000 residents of Kilimani estate while the study population will be chief officers, departmental heads and general staff from the real estate firm managing properties. Simple random sampling was used to pick out specific houses across the study area. The sampling unit was land parcel while the sample size was approximately 50 houses. The data obtained from the study was sorted out, analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented using photographs, maps, charts, simple tables and graphs.

▼ The general objective of this study was to determine the independent and combined effect of firm level factors on performance of large manufacturing firms in Kenya. The specific objectives of this study were to determine the influence of structure on performance of large manufacturing firms, determine the influence of culture on performance of large manufacturing firms, establish the influence of resources on performance of large manufacturing firms, determine the combined effect of structure, culture and resources on performance of large manufacturing firms and establish the intervening effect of competitive strategy and moderating effect of industry environment on combined effect of structure, culture and resources on performance of large manufacturing firms. The study was a cross sectional survey targeting 102 large manufacturing firms and the response rate was from 94 firms. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Hypotheses were tested and nearly all were rejected apart from two hypotheses. The two hypotheses indicated that organizational structure had no influence on return on assets and that organizational culture did not influence customer perspective. Results indicated that organizational structure, culture and resources had combined effect on organizational performance. Competitive strategy had an intervening effect and industry environment had moderating effect on combined effect of organizational structure, culture and resources on organizational performance. The study established that different measures of performance indicated varying results. The results of the study are important in influencing the government policy. The Ministry of Industrialization and Enterprise Development in liaison with other key ministries and agencies should ensure that there is appropriate legal framework that enhances the industry environment. This is important because with globalization, the industry environment has become more dynamic and turbulent. When the government formulates and implement appropriate policies based on empirical data, the manufacturing firms will have more conducive environment to be competitive locally and globally. Kenya association of manufacturer through the results obtained is able to advise the organization members adequately. The study results indicated the relevance of contingency theory that an organizational performance is dependent to certain independent factors. This implies that the theory is relevant and important in understanding what are the key factors that would be instrumental in making a business competitive. The results indicated that organizational resources influences organizational performance. This support the resource based view of strategy but the dynamic capability theory cannot be overlooked because it emphasizes on the importance of effective use of organizational resources. This study supports organizational behavior theory because organizational structure and organizational culture were found to significantly influence organizational…

▼ NatureWatch Canada, a citizen science program, collects and analyses data pertaining to plant phenology, frog species and ice coverage over water bodies in Canada to monitor trends through time and space in relation to climate change. An important question is whether this database is currently usable to infer environmental changes through space and time. This thesis presents a metadata analysis of the Nature Watch database in order to identify the spatial validity, quality, reliability and usability of the current data. We first explore citizen science through a review of the literature, followed by a detailed analysis of the content of the database. We also produce an example Newsletter for each module to illustrate some of the current trends in the data. The Frogwatch Newsletter shows how weather conditions in 2001 may have favored a population spurt of Leopard frogs resulting from more spawning ponds essential for this species. Next the Plantwatch Newsletter reveals that an increase in Aspen poplar and Prairie crocus in 2002 may have been due to fires during the preceding years. Lastly, the Icewatch Newsletter shows how ice formation, but not melt, reveals a clear trend of occurring 17 days later over the last 100 years with a stronger increase starting in the sixties for Western Ontario. In summary, this thesis presents a detailed metadata analysis of the Naturewatch database in order to provide recommendations for its improvement in the future. Improving programs like Naturewatch Canada is important to monitoring climate and ecological changes that could be applied throughout the Canadian North which are not currently well represented in this database.

▼ Indoor air quality measurements and staff absentee data were collected from elementary schools in a Winnipeg school division. Data was collected measuring carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, temperature, relative humidity, particulate matter, and in some schools, radon. It was found that nearly all schools were experiencing some measure of IAQ problems. The most common issues measured were low levels of relative humidity and high concentrations of carbon dioxide. No significant relationships between staff absenteeism and IAQ parameters were identified in Pearson product-moment correlations and multiple regression analyses. Survey results found that 96% of respondents found IAQ problems in the workplace, and 79% of respondents show ‘sick building syndrome’-like symptoms. Recommendations have been provided to improve IAQ and establish an IAQ management program in order to improve the indoor
environment in the school division.

▼ Remediation of contaminated land needs to be carried out using methods that are both cost effective and minimise environmental pollution. However, the remediation option currently chosen by practitioners is often based upon limited economic information with the true environmental costs not being considered. This can result in the least sustainable option being chosen. This study has developed a methodology to evaluate the sustainability, in terms of economic and environmental costs, for a range of treatments available for the remediation of diesel contaminated land, including bioremediation (with and without the addition of brewery spent grain), disposal to landfill and thermal treatment. Initial laboratory investigations indicated that the use of brewery spent grain decreased the time taken for the clean-up of soil contaminated with diesel, suggesting that bioremediation augmented by the addition of this organic material was a viable option. A costing model was then developed that included all of the costs associated with the remediation options chosen. This included both direct and indirect costs. The results show that considering the indirect costs of remediation such as costs associated with delayed development the land, make bioremediation in this study an economically feasible option. Finally environmental costs were considered with a focus on the release of carbon dioxide a known greenhouse gas. Respirometry was used to determine the volume of carbon dioxide released during the bioremediation process. This information was then combined with data collected from a range of other sources and the impact of the chosen remediation options on atmospheric greenhouse gas release was evaluated. Other environmental impacts were also determined including land and water pollution. The results indicate that bioremediation with brewery spent grain has one of the lowest environmental costs and showed that emission from pollutants such as NOx, PM1.0, PM2.5, NH3 and SO2 could contribute to the limit values in the area covered by remediation work. The model developed in this study has indicated that the use of bioremediation with and without the use of brewery spent grain is a sustainable remediation option providing both direct and indirect economic costs are included. The results have indicated that, the strategy of using brewery spent grain to augment bioremediation v process promotes the re-use of by-product material, reduces waste and conserve resources. There is a need for the remediation industry to adopt similar models in order that decisions made, as to the remediation option chosen, are based upon accurate costings of their sustainability.

▼ non-peer-reviewed
The underlying question of this thesis is concerned with the place of architecture in extreme
environments. It is about designing a typology for living in a destabilized and uncertain environment.
It is about designing the capability of living somewhere else.
In its own right this thesis is an exploration in itself. An exploration of what is possible, and more
so, what could be probable. It is a critical response to the question of how we might both construct
and live in the near future.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to give a comprehensive explanation of the worldwide trade and environment conflicts and a thorough analysis of the trade and environment debate between trade specialists and environmentalists. After a general
introduction of the origin of and the critical issues involved in the trade and environment debate, this thesis discusses the complicated relation between trade and environment on the basis of economic theory and empirical studies. Then it examines the
resolution of specific trade and environment conflicts within a multilateral trading system and the relative role of WTO in accommodating environmental interest into the trade liberalization. At last it comes to its conclusion that there is no inherent
conflict between trade liberalization and environmental protection and trade and environment should go hand in hand to achieve a sustainable development and the improvement of human welfare as a whole.

▼ The revegetation of degraded and vulnerable land is a key objective of natural resource management policy in Australia. The production of woody energy crops could help to facilitate such revegetation, with examples including the cropping of mallee eucalypts in Western Australia and poplar and willow in Europe. This thesis seeks to add to the existing knowledge around woody energy crops for revegetation by exploring the applicability of these ideas to the Central West region of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. This includes analysis of the potential social, economic and environmentalimpacts of energy cropping in this region and the development of policy measures to guide the use of woody energy crops for revegetation. The results of two case studies in the NSW Central West are presented, one in the Central Tablelands and another farther west in the wheat and sheep belt around the town of Condobolin. These two regions have much in common, but also possess notable differences in land use, climate, topography, demographic trends and natural resource management priorities. The case study results suggest that different strategies are likely to be required for bioenergy-based agroforestry in each region. Woodyenergy crops appear closer to being competitive with typical agriculture in the Central Tablelands, where large-scale bioenergy options such as electricity generation or liquid fuel production may be viable due to the presence of existing timber industry residues. At Condobolin, energy cropping appears less competitive at present, but small-scale options involving wood pellets, briquettes or electricity may be viable for small groups of landholders with high levels of interest in mallee cropping. Recommendations are also presented on policy options that could be used to guide the development of bioenergy-based agroforestry in a sustainable manner. Policydevelopment of this nature requires consideration of the differing issues, benchmarks and policy measures employed across the revegetation, plantation and bioenergy sectors. Key policy recommendations include measures to support landholders in the establishment of energy plantations, the tailoring of renewable energy incentive programs to promote bioenergy that contributes to revegetation goals and the use of land use planning regulations to mitigate negative land use impacts.

▼ The Kingdom of Tonga historically is a class-structured society. The 1875 Constitution confirmed the Kings liberation of commoners from chiefly authority, as well as legalising private land tenure. The following Land Act of 1927 then prescribed strict rules for land acquisition through the Minister for Lands who is the sole representative of the Crown in all matters concerning land and sea in the Kingdom. Tongas current environmental and natural resource management framework as a consequence is founded in these two Acts, which basically sets out the constitutional and administrative structure that established the modern land and marine tenure as practiced today. More importantly, political perceptions, the supporting institutions, and the resource management structure that has evolved are a reflection of this past and of priorities at the time. Consistent with deductions of
Environment and Development theory, elevation of the economy and raising the standard of living to a more affluent level was of utmost priority. The complication created here is that the countrys priorities have shifted with time, assisted by the increasing global focus on sustainable development and emergent issues such as global climate change. However in light of overwhelming economic pressures to develop, the current natural resource management framework with its inherent legacies although evolving through recent national reform can be deemed inept and lacking the capacity to adequately address these issues. Hopefully this thesis will fundamentally contribute to the current reform process and aid the Tongan Government in ensuring that potential development initiatives are provided the proper sustainable vision, direction and guidelines in light of a changing paradigm. ▼ This report examines how urban environments create a sense of exile for marginalized communities in the work of French poet Charles Baudelaire and the ethnography of French Guianese Creole writer Léon-Gontran Damas, Retour de Guyane. Through a comparative literary analysis informed by an environmental justice framework I examine how urban decay prompts the development of discourses on public health in nineteenth-century Paris and twentieth-century French Guiana. A main question I address is: How do representations of exile in French and Francophone literature indicate the process of nation-building? I foreground the discriminatory legacy of French colonialism in my analysis of Retour de Guyane to highlight how governmental neglect resulting in Guiana’s infrastructural decay constitutes an act of environmental racism and social exclusion. By using French Guiana as a case point, I illustrate examples of deliberate environmental degradation of racialized communities today in the twenty-first century and describe how Charles Baudelaire and Léon-Gontran Damas transmit the value of environmental awareness for the sake of intergenerational well-being.
