▼ This thesis investigated the approach to, and the conducting of worship services in ten missional faith communities of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa during the period 2004 – 2009. It investigated the shift in theological paradigm (towards mission) taking place in the Dutch Reformed Church from 2002 onwards, and the effects thereof on liturgy and music in the worship domain.
In order to contextualise the liturgical developments emanating from the case studies, the history and liturgy of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa were traced back to the early Dutch pastors arriving with the first settlers at the Cape Colony in 1652. The historical events leading to the Dutch Reformed Church being labelled as the state church and its sanctioning of the apartheid ideology were placed in perspective as a result of the successes of missionary work in South Africa.
The missional paradigm was unpacked according to the missio Dei. God is the primal agent in mission and calls His church into mission, and sending the church to restore society. Created in the imago Dei, human beings have a responsibility towards contextual society in everyday life. Missional worship therefore becomes a paradigmatic way of life. God is the focal point in worship and liturgy: it is all about God.
The core of the research revolves around the ten missional faith communities, eight of which were part of the initial Southern African Partnership for Missional Churches project. Unstructured interviews were conducted with pastors, musicians and persons involved in the focussed missional activities within these congregations. Having an insider's perspective on the project, the researcher included his own narrative in order to further underline the changes taking place in the worship domain.
Liturgy in the faith communities under investigation was found to be shifting towards ecumenical models: the gathering, the service of the Word, the service of the Table, and the sending. A trend to celebrate the Eucharist/Holy Communion more frequently than the tradition dictated was also noted in the communities. In general, a more creative approach towards the planning and execution of liturgy has been observed – this freedom allowing for the Holy Spirit to move the faith community during worship, and was vastly different to the cognitive historical liturgy.
The music ministry has developed into a new paradigm from the historical role of the organist. Music was found to become a focal point, manifesting as liturgical art, pointing towards God and enabling the faith community to meet God in worship. This led to the change in the role of the church musician in terms of scope and spiritual/religious value. The shift towards leading the liturgy and shaping the faith community through music has been noted – thus establishing a music ministry.
The Eucharist/Holy Communion is presented as a metaphor, the underlying basis for a model in music ministry. Music ministry is now defined under the theological lens as being sacramental in nature. In closing,…

Tal
purificação do sacerdócio e do restabelecimento do culto domina a
maior parte do texto (cf. 3,2-4).
[en] The aim of this research is to study how the
prophet Malachi relates the priesthood crisis, described in
particular in 2:1-9, with the eschatological perspective presented
in 2:17 – 3:5. The research considers that while in 2:1-9 the
judgmental discourse on the faulty priests prevails, in v. 4 is
outlined a salvific perspective. This perspective is developed in
2:17 – 3:5, where the theme of priesthood purification and the
reestablishment of worship dominates most of the text (cf. 3:2-4).
For the study of the textual units, was followed the Critical
Historical Method in its essential stages, combining it,
particularly in the commentary on the texts, with the synchronic
analysis, considering each of the pericopes in its final and
canonical form. With respect to 2:17 – 3:5 it was tried to identify
the elements that allow characterizing this text as eschatological
and delineating its main perspectives. The joint study of the
pericopes has shown that in Malachi the judgment predicted in 2:1-9
is reversed from the eschatological perspective presented in 2:17 –
3:5. Since the priests are the ministers of worship and this is the
manifestation of the properly religious dimension of God s
relationship with his people, YHWH himself will firstly act through
his messenger, purifying the same priests and restoring the
integrity of the worship, and so he will act as a witness against
those who do not fear him.

No
No v.
[en] The relationship between worship and monarchy is
analyzed in the light of Psalm 101, being emphasized the vv. 2 and
6, where above all, they are noticed indications to allow to
explore this relationship. In the poem the king wants to sing the
love and the right of YHWH, divine gifts granted to Israel and
David, not only responding through the cult, but also through a
faithful lifestyle according to the Law of YHWH. This life project,
road without stain, becomes the criterion in the choice of his
collaborators, and should rule the lives of all inhabitants of the
city of God. Through the question when will you come to me? in v.
2, the king claims the arrival of YHWH to him, so that he might be
capable to accomplish his fidelity purposes. In v. 6 the verb to
serve, is used to designate the cultic service to God, and here it
designates the service to the king, it seems to indicate the
proximity between the monarchic atmosphere and the cultic
atmosphere. This proximity also infers the royal speech, which
reveals that the criterion that orientates the king s life and of
those who are admitted to the court, is similar to what, according
to the entrance liturgies, should guide the life of those who are
admitted to the temple: the fidelity to the Law. Thus, in v. 2 the
king recognizes his dependence on YHWH and, in v.6, the king
establishes his court, in a certain way, in dependence on the
temple.

▼ This thesis expresses a thorough conceptual and
theoretical investigation of the liturgical challenges a liturgist
(preacher) faces to address worshippers of all MBTI® (Myers-Briggs
Type Indicator®) personality types effectively in public sermons.
The investigation is focused on the conceptualizing of
psychological factors and the effects thereof that need to be taken
into account by liturgists in a public
worship service. The
scientific aim of the thesis is to give liturgists a theoretical
grasp on the hermeneutical factors, liturgical demands and
homiletical challenges that any preacher should calculate in
addressing worshippers with different and often ‘conflicting’
personality types and needs in a public sermon. I have chosen the
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® as psychometric instrument which
consists out of sixteen unique and different personality types that
are described in a four letter combination. This combination
describes a person’s preferred orientation to the world
(extroversion or introversion), his/her preferred way of gathering
information (sensing or intuition), his/her preferred way of
decision making (thinking or feeling) and the preferred lifestyle
he/she adopts (judging or perceiving). The MBTI® builds on the
insights of the well-known Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, the
father of analytical psychology as well as the efforts of the
formidable mother and daughter combination, Isabel Myers and
Katharine Briggs. The reason for this choice is because the MBTI®
proofs to be the most distinctive and effective instrument for
comprehensively addressing spirituality and type. On the one hand
the MBTI® is ‘friendly’ and intelligible enough to be taken into
account by any congregation and liturgist while on the other hand
it is a thorough and comprehensive psychometric instrument with
sound subjacent psychological and scientific principles. Jung
distinguished two opposite energizing orientations to the world,
extraversion and introversion and four mental functions, the two
opposite ways of taking in information (sensing and intuition) and
the two opposite ways of ordering (organizing) the information
that’s been taken in (thinking and feeling). In addition, Isabel
Myers and Katharine Briggs added two preferred opposite lifestyles,
an organized planned lifestyle (judging) and an adaptive
spontaneous lifestyle (perceiving). Out of these combined
distinctions the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® was born. The
investigation is conveyed in two distinct phases namely a
theoretical- and a conclusive phase. The thesis consists out of
four parts. Part 1 (Chapters 1 and 2) covers the introduction, an
explanation of the methodology and the preliminary description of
the concepts in the title of the thesis and other relevant concepts
for example ‘liturgy’. The title of the thesis is: Personality
types in worshippers: A practical-theological investigation of the
challenges a preacher faces to address worshippers of all MBTI®
