[pt] Em Josef Albers, a sua ideia de cor consolida-se na sua maturidade. O conhecimento científico e empírico das cores torna-se uma vivência, utilizado como uma ferramenta, uma métrica poética para fazê-las transformarem-se no tempo de percepção, ativando o sujeito e tornando-o consciente dessa atividade. A variabilidade, inconstância da percepção; a simultaneidade e reversão de significados, perseguidos desde o início da sua obra, revelam-se fortemente na série Homages to the Square, elaborada em conjunto com o livro Interaction of Color. É a partir destas que a sua obra torna-se paradigmática para a arte contemporânea, abrangendo muitas questões caras ao século XX. Em ambos, problematizam-se os limites entre prática e teoria, racionalidade e expressão colocados pela didática bauhausiana, culminando o investimento de toda uma longa vida. Este trabalho se propõe a afirmar a sua atualidade. Podemos dizer que o pensamento da cor presente em sua obra artística e teórica não gerou um estilo, mas alcançou um amplo objetivo de multiplicação, de formação, promovendo uma mente clara, integrada ao mundo, em prontidão para o futuro. Pretendermos avançar na discussão dos parâmetros internos da sua obra ao percebê-la em constante redefinição em embates e diálogos sincrônicos e diacrônicos, tanto com os diversos meios públicos onde ela tem estado atuante, quanto com tradições às quais ela se filia.

[en] In Josef Albers, his idea of color is consolidated in his maturity. The scientific and empirical knowledge of color becomes a living, used as tool, a poetic metric to make them turn up on time perception, activating the subject and making him aware of this activity. The variability, inconstancy of perception; concurrency and reversal of meanings, persecuted since the beginning of his work, strongly reveal in the Homage to the Square series, elaborated in conjunction with the book Interaction of Color. It is from these that his work becomes a paradigm for contemporary art, covering many issues dear to the twentieth century. In both, to problematize the boundaries between theory and practice, rationality and expression posed by bauhausian didactic, culminating the investment of a whole life. This work intends to assert its renewing. We can say can that the thought of color present in his artistic and theoretical oeuvre has not generated a style, but has reached a broad goal of multiplication, training, promoting a clear mind, integrated to the world, in readiness for the future. We intended to forge ahead the discussion of the internal parameters of it in constant clashes and redefinition in synchronic and diachronic dialogue, both with the various public milieus where it has been active, and traditions which is affiliated.

[pt] A harmonia e a beleza expressas pelas obras de arte plásticas gregas elevaram-nas a um patamar modelar ao longo da história da arte. Apesar disso, não foram muitos os intérpretes que se voltaram para a questão das artes plásticas na literatura deste mesmo período histórico. Em Platão, por exemplo, outros temas, como das artes poética e sofística, são notavelmente mais trabalhados pela literatura secundária. Isto provavelmente se deve ao fato das artes plásticas aparecerem timidamente nos diálogos, sendo usadas, na maior parte dos casos, em comparações, analogias ou metáforas. Neste trabalho preferimos o tema marginal e voltamo-nos ao estudo das noções de pintura e escultura no contexto do pensamento de Platão. Com a intenção de obter uma visão alternativa à da República no que diz respeito às artes miméticas, investigamos sobre a questão das artes plásticas no que se costuma considerar como último desenvolvimento do pensamento de Platão. Segundo a interpretação mais difundida, no último livro da República Platão condena e expulsa os artistas de sua cidade ideal. Esta mesma apreciação negativa das artes imitativas seria mantida ou modificada em diálogos posteriores? Partimos de uma leitura das ocorrências das noções de pintura e escultura no Sofista, onde encontramos a distinção das artes miméticas em divina e humana. A partir desta distinção, abordamos as aspectos divinos e humanos das artes plásticas, por meio de uma interpretação de sua presença em dois outros diálogos, a saber, o Timeu e as Leis. No Timeu as artes plásticas são usadas para retratar o trabalho do deus demiurgo do mundo; nas Leis, são as obras produzidas pelos homens que são abordadas, principalmente quanto à sua função na cidade construída pelos personagens. Delineamos a percepção de Platão a respeito destes gêneros artísticos, e buscamos compreender o lugar que as artes plásticas ocupam no seu pensamento.

[en] Greek plastic art s harmony and beauty made it a model throughout history. In spite of that, only a few scholars have researched about these arts in Greek literature. In Plato, for example, other themes such as the poetic and the sophistic arts are usually more approached. This probably occurs because Plato rarely refers to the plastic arts and uses it mostly in comparisons, analogies or metaphors. Even so, in this thesis we have chosen to research the plastic arts in Plato s thought. The main text on mimetic arts in Plato s dialogues is Republic X. In this book the mimetic arts are condemned and banished from the ideal city. With the purpose to obtain an alternative view about these arts from Plato, we ve decided to study some dialogues considered posterior to the Republic, generally considered to represent the ultimate development of Plato s thought. Will this condemnation remain or will his view be modified in his late works? We begin by an analysis of the Sophist, where we find the distinction between two kinds of mimetic art: the divine and the human. [pt] A presente pesquisa busca compreender os quadrinhos como expressão que recria conteúdos e formas de outras artes. Em perspectiva interdisciplinar, assume-se o viés da intermidialidade, segundo a qual a relação entre as artes é também uma relação entre mídias, para analisar os quadrinhos como forma de expressão que se constitui historicamente a partir de processos que recriam e reapresentam os procedimentos de outras artes, como a literatura e a pintura - e, não, como um sistema autônomo, cujas zonas de contato com outras artes constituem meros cruzamentos de fronteiras bem demarcadas. Objetiva-se também mostrar que a sarjeta, como expediente de montagem nos quadrinhos, oferece um ângulo privilegiado para pensar a intermidialidade, já que, em seus usos mais experimentais e fragmentários, torna menos transparente a relação que os quadrinhos estabelecem com a pintura e a literatura. Este trabalho é composto de duas partes: uma, teórica, que consiste no resgate interdisciplinar de parte da fortuna crítica disponível sobre o tema, e outra parte que constitui um experimento teórico na proposição da escritura de uma história em quadrinhos cuja relação com a pintura e seus textos traz à tona o tema da intermidialidade, e cujos procedimentos de montagem remetem às discussões propostas pela pesquisa. A HQ realizada nesta pesquisa chama-se Jardim das Sinapses - ensaio gráfico biocêntrico, e resulta do trabalho de pesquisa em parceria com o artista plástico e editor Sérgio Manon.

[en] This research seeks to understand comics as an expression that recreates contents and forms of other arts. In an interdisciplinary perspective, it assumes the approach of intermediality, according to which the relation between the arts is also a relation between media. This research seeks to understand comics as a form of expression that is historically constituted from processes that re-create and re-present the procedures of other arts, such as literature and painting - and not as an autonomous system, whose zones of contact with other arts are mere crosses of well-demarcated frontiers. It is also intended to show that the gutter, as a set-up in comics, offers a privileged angle to think of intermediality, since, in its more experimental and fragmentary uses, it renders less transparent the relation that comics establish with painting and literature This work is composed of two parts: one, theoretical, which consists in the interdisciplinary rescue of part of the available critical fortune on the subject, and another part that constitutes a theoretical experiment in the proposition of the writing of a comic book whose relation with painting and his texts bring to the surface the theme of intermediality, and whose procedures of montage refer to the discussions proposed by the research. The comics manufactured in this research is called Jardim das Sinapses - a biocentric graphic essay, and results from the research work in partnership with the artist and publisher Sergio Manon.

[pt] A tese Giorgio Morandi e o respeito pelas coisas de uso, retoma a produção artística de Giorgio Morandi 1890-1964, um dos mais importantes artistas italianos do século XX, para restabelecer dentro do período de formação do Modernismo suas relações com a produção cultural europeia coetânea. A tese busca mostrar como a obra de Morandi se apresenta como uma alternativa à interpretação artística hegemônica feita pelo Cubismo da obra de Cézanne, privilegiando aspectos dessa poética que foram relegados a segundo plano por Picasso e Braque, notadamente a percepção de um espaço em profundidade corporalmente determinado, porém conjuminando essa espacialização com a linguagem planar estabelecida pelos cubistas. Procuramos mostrar que as buscas de Morandi não tinham afinidades somente no campo das artes, mas como a produção de sua obra e as questões por ela elaboradas, particularmente como o entendimento plástico das coisas e utensílios que lhe servem como motivo para suas naturezas–mortas estão em sintonia com o conceito de coisa e coisidade tratado pxsor Heidegger em A origem da obra de arte e O que é uma coisa?, ambos os textos escritos em 1935. As indagações artísticas de Morandi, de modo mais amplo, têm profundas afinidades com o método fenomenológico de Husserl, Heidegger e Merleau-Ponty.

[en] The dissertation Morandi and the Respect for Things of Use reexamines the artistic production of Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), one of the most important Italian artists of the 20th century, in order to reestablish, within the time frame of the development of Modernism, his connections with contemporaneous European cultural production. The dissertation shows the ways in which Morandi s work presents itself as an alternative to Cubism s hegemonic artistic interpretation of Cézanne s work, favoring aspects of Cèzanne s poetics that Picasso and Braque relegated to the background – notably the perception of corporally determined depth of space – while at the same time uniting this spatialization with the language of flatness established by the Cubists. The dissertation seeks to demonstrate that Morandi s investigations had affinities not only in the arts, but that the production of his body of work and the questions it raised – in particular the visual understanding of things and utensils that motivated his still-lifes – were in line with the concept of thing and thingness elaborated by Heidegger in The Origin of the Work of Art and What is a Thing? both written in 1935. Morandi s artistic inquiries, in a broad sense, have deep affinities with the phenomenological method of Husserl, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty.

[pt] Sistemas CAD – Computer-Aided Design Systems – são muito utilizados nas diferentes etapas do ciclo de vida de um empreendimento de engenharia, como a elaboração do projeto conceitual, a construção da estrutura física e a operação da planta. A manutenção das instalações é uma tarefa de muita importância durante a operação, onde a pintura de equipamentos e estruturas é essencial. Estimar a área de pintura dos diferentes objetos possui um custo elevado se feito manualmente, com a utilização de trenas e lasers. Uma forma mais eficiente de calcular essas áreas é através do uso das ferramentas CAD. Entretanto, o processo de modelagem do modelo CAD, utilizando objetos paramétricos e malhas tridimensionais, insere superfícies que estão encobertas por outros objetos. Essas superfícies encobertas não são pintadas, e considerar suas áreas na orçamentação da pintura resulta em erros consideráveis. Portanto, o uso de um cálculo simples de todas as áreas de superfícies que compõem os objetos não é adequado. Com o objetivo de eliminar as superfícies escondidas do cálculo da área de pintura, este trabalho propõe uma abordagem baseada em campos de distância adaptativos juntamente com operações de geometria sólida construtiva. Primeiramente, as malhas passam por uma fase de pré-processamento, no qual são ajustadas de forma que cumpram com os requisitos necessários para a construção do campo de distância adaptativo, e em seguida os seus campos são calculados. Objetos parametrizados não necessitam dessa etapa pois já possuem um campo de distância implícito. Operações de geometria sólida construtiva foram então utilizadas para obter o campo da diferença e da interseção de cada objeto com a cena. De posse desses dados, foi desenvolvida uma fórmula que utiliza as áreas da diferença com a cena, da interseção e a área superficial de cada objeto para calcular a sua área de pintura. Em testes controlados, as áreas de pintura obtidas diferenciaram em no máximo 0,84 por cento das áreas reais. Nos testes com modelos reais, foi obtido uma redução de até 38 por cento da área estimada em relação a abordagem simplista de não tratar as superfícies ocultas.

[en] CAD Systems – Computer-Aided Design Systems – are widely used in the different life cycle stages of an engineering enterprise, such as conceptual design, physical structure construction, and plant operation. The maintenance of the facility is a very important task during the operation, where painting the equipments and structures is essential. Estimating the painting area of the different objects has a high cost if done manually, using measuring tapes and lasers. A more efficiently way to calculate these areas is through the use of CAD tools. However, the modeling process of the CAD model, using parametric objects and three-dimensional meshes, inserts surfaces that are hidden by other objects. [pt] As obras dos dois artistas alemães Anselm Kiefer e Georg Baselitz e sua importância na retomada da arte germânica e européia no cenário da arte mundial são objetos de estudo deste trabalho. Ao reviverem suas próprias histórias de vida em sua prática artística, esses artistas transformam as reminiscências do passado em motivo (Leitmotiv) para a criação. Assimilando e explorando suas experiências vitais para transformá-las em matéria constituinte de suas poéticas, efetuam o resgate de um pathos tipicamente romântico. O olhar para a história comum, o nazismo, o comunismo, o período pós-guerra e a divisão da Alemanha e suas consequências pontuam suas obras. A semelhança estética entre suas poéticas faz-se presente em seu caráter monumental, no impulso pictórico, expressivo e brutal, bem como na qualidade gestual de suas obras. Também coincidem no regaste da figuração e de um simbolismo que alude a questões sociais, políticas e históricas, partindo de uma vivência pessoal.

[en] This paper studies the artistic creations of German painters Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz and their importance in the retrieval of German and European art in the context of world art. Looking back at their own life stories and their artistic performance, these two painters made recollections of the past into the Leitmotif of creation. Assimilating and exploring their own vital experiences in order to turn them into the subject matter of their poetics, they effected the retrieval of a typically romantic pathos. A review of their common experiences with Nazism and Communism, the post-war period and the division of Germany and its consequences underscore their work. The aesthetical resemblance of their poetics also appear in the monumental character, the expressive and brutal painting impulse, as well as the spontaneous quality of their work. There also is a coincidence in the retrieval of figurative art and symbolism regarding social, political and historical questions, seen from a personal living perspective.

[pt] No contexto das pesquisas que se desenvolvem no LILD, DAD, PUC-Rio, sobre o encapsulamento de colmos de bambu, este trabalho explora uma nova modalidade de proteção do material, que se desdobra em benefício estético. Em síntese, propõe-se aqui a pintura ou impregnação de pigmentos e corantes sobre superfícies de colmos de bambu com resinas transparentes e translúcidas. A proposição que origina esta tese deriva da premissa de que a geometria do bambu extraído é a característica mais relevante de sua forma, e não a cor natural, que perde seu viço após a extração do solo. Nesse sentido, desde os primeiros experimentos com pintura, percebemos que a cor artificial poderia substituir a cor natural, realçando a curvatura da fibras longitudinais e outros aspectos da geometria única do bambu, dando origem, em verdade, a uma outra dimensão possível do material, na qual a perda da naturalidade crômica seria compensada por ganhos em representação geométrica – para além dos benefícios em relação à proteção do material e em coerência com a integração forma/função que marca a essência do design. Considerando a cor, nessa e noutras funções, a pesquisa compreende quatro produções inter-relacionadas no tempo: a) Experimentos iniciais de pintura, impregnação de cores e encapsulamento; b) Manejo de algumas espécies de bambu, pintura e encapsulamento de bambus abertos e construção de objetos tensegrity para testes de resistência às tensões e à ação do tempo; c) Produção dos objetos demonstrativos das aplicações de uso; d) Instalações. Constituindo-se na espinha dorsal do trabalho, as quatro produções são expostas em linha de tempo no capítulo 3, demonstrando desencobrimentos e técnicas aplicadas. Os capítulos precedentes de introdução e contextualização abordam aspectos relacionados a esse eixo principal, com foco na cor como função na natureza, no design e na arquitetura.

[en] In the scope of the researches developed at LILD, DAD, PUC-Rio about the encapsulating of bamboo stems, this work explores a new way to protect this material, which also creates esthetic benefits. We propose the painting or impregnation of pigments and dyes on surfaces of bamboo stems with transparent and translucent resins. This thesis proposition is that the most relevant characteristic of the shape of the extracted bamboo is its geometry, rather than its natural color, which loses its freshness after the extraction. Since our first painting experiments, we realized that artificial color could replace the natural one, highlighting the longitudinal fiber s curves and other aspects of the unique geometry of the bamboo, originating a new possible dimension of the material, where the loss of natural color would be compensated by gains in geometric representation – in addition to benefits regarding material protection and in keeping with the integration of form and function that is the essence of design. ▼ Le mémoire présente une démarche méthodologique originale afin d'étudier la réception du lightgraff par le lecteur-consommateur en contexte publicitaire. Peu commun dans ses objectifs, ce mémoire est consacré à la construction d'un modèle conceptuel pour une approche méthodologique intégrée. Autrement dit, il n'existe aucune application de cette méthodologie dans cette présente recherche. En ce sens, le mémoire pose les premiers jalons d'une étude qui vise à proposer des outils pour explorer l'impact du langage visuel du light painting sur le récepteur de publicité au sein d'une problématique de production de sens (significations), de production d'émotion et d'évaluation (attitude favorable ou défavorable, sans pour autant mettre à l'épreuve l'ensemble de ces outils. La méthodologie qualitative proposée emprunte une démarche combinant deux méthodes : d'une part, l'analyse sémiopragmatique est un instrument qui permet d'explorer au préalable le discours du langage visuel lightgraff; d'autre part, la méthode d'entrevue semi-dirigée ainsi que son analyse thématique vise à ancrer la recherche dans la réalité d'un terrain sensible collé au lecteur-consommateur exposé à la publicité au lightgraff. Les outils d'analyse de la réception du lightgraff par le lecteur-consommateur en contexte publicitaire que nous construisons se présentent ainsi : modèle d'arbre de significations du langage visuel lightgraff, modèle de grille de présentation de l'arbre thématique et taxonomie des émotions face à la publicité. Leur mise en relation au sein d'une problématique de la réception en termes de sens et d'émotion donne lieu à des méthodes d'analyse inspirées en premier lieu de l'analyse thématique de niveau de la discussion (catégorisation) et de l'analyse de la théorisation ancrée (codage et catégorisation) en deuxième lieu. De ce fait, le mémoire est un guide de méthode précieux pour les chercheurs qui ont à analyser la réception du langage visuel lightgraff utilisé dans des productions publicitaires de diverses natures (images fixes ou en mouvement) avec le souci de le placer dans une perspective communicationnelle. Édouard Dujardin (1861-1949), fondateur de la Revue wagnérienne et de la Revue Indépendante de littérature et d’art, n’a pas été seulement un théoricien du symbolisme, il en a été le praticien. Son œuvre littéraire entre 1885 et 1893 explore aussi bien le vers que la prose, en retrace les questionnements. Résolument engagée dans l’avant-Garde, elle ne s’attaque pas seulement à l’édifice du réalisme, elle remet en cause le modèle de la mimèsis dans une recherche formelle intense. Ainsi l’œuvre de Dujardin se fait-Elle, de manière exemplaire, témoin de cette crise du vers que traversait l’univers des lettres. Genres, formes et confrontation entre les arts délimitent ce parcours en trois parties, qui ne suit pas un plan linéaire ou chronologique, mais un questionnement spécifique déterminé par chaque ouvrage. Pour cette raison, nous avons commencé par son théâtre, qui soulevait la question de l’identité du personnage. Le prénom Antonia nous a ainsi servi de fil conducteur pour aborder la relation vers et prose, telle qu’elle se manifeste soit dans le poème en prose soit dans le vers libre. Dans une seconde partie, nous avons interrogé les formes, la prose poétique de ses nouvelles et de son roman, qui répondent partiellement aux critères définissant le poème en prose. Enfin, dans le cadre de la confrontation entre les arts, nous nous sommes intéressés au phénomène textuel Les Lauriers sont coupés, considéré par la critique comme un procédé de « monologue intérieur », puis au rapport entre poésie et musique par l’étude de l’ouvrage Litanies mélopées pour chant et piano, qui met en vis-À-Vis poème et musique.

Edouard Dujardin (1861-1949), the founder of Revue wagnérienne (the Wagnerian Journal) and Revue Indépendante de littérature et d’art (the independent journal of literature and art) has not only been a theoretician on symbolism but also a practitioner. His literary work between 1885 and 1893 explores verse as well as prose and traces back its questionings. Being resolutely engaged in the avant-Garde, it does not only tackle the structure of realism but also questions the model of mimesis in a sort of formal and intense research. It thus happens that Dujardin’s literary work testifies, in an exemplary way for that matter, to the crisis in verse that the literary universe was undergoing. Genres, forms and confrontations of different forms of arts define this course in three parts which does not follow a linear plan nor a chronological one but rather a specific questioning determined by each literary work. This is the reason why we started by studying his drama which raised the question of the character’s identity. The name of Antonia was thus used as a thread to tackle the relationship between prose and verse, as shown in the poem in prose or in free verse.In a second part, we questioned the forms-The poetic prose of his short stories and of his novel- which partly fulfil the criteria of the poem in verse. ▼ El avance en las formas musicales propugnadas por el maestro alemán, sino que sus teorías estéticas a irrupción del wagnerismo en la Europa de su tiempo, fue uno de los fenómenos artísticos y culturales más significativos de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Éste no se limitó únicamente a un y escenográficas trascendieron las fronteras teatrales para alcanzar a otros campos como el literario o el de las artes plásticas, tal y como se abordará en el desarrollo de la tesis. Muchos de estos artistas e intelectuales (franceses, ingleses, belgas, rusos, norteamericanos, italianos, españoles, etc.) seducidos por la estética wagneriana, contribuyeron a integrar la iconografía y el mundo mítico de las óperas de Wagner en patrimonio común de la civilización occidental. Este fenómeno fue posible gracias a la nueva ordenación en la jerarquía de las artes producida en el siglo XIX y que llevó a la música y a la pintura –hasta entonces considerada en un plano inferior respecto a la poesía y a la arquitectura- a encabezar este nuevo orden, hecho que afectó favorablemente a la difusión de las teorías artísticas de Wagner tal y como veremos. El Romanticismo alemán con las figuras de Schiller, Caspar David Friedrich o Philip Otto Runge participaron en este nuevo postulado que pronto fue divulgado por toda Europa, agregándose igualmente la figura principal del pintor francés Eugène Delacroix que la convirtió en pilar básico de su teoría artística. Pero, sin lugar a dudas, fue la presencia del músico alemán Richard Wagner (1813-1883), quien mejor desarrolló e influencia tuvo en la estética de su tiempo por esta preeminencia de la música y la pintura sobre las demás artes, y particularmente de la música sobre el resto. Wagner convirtió a la idea de la Gesamtkunstwerk (obra de arte total) –partiendo de la sinestesia como origen-, en el sujeto fundamental de toda su obra musical y estética. Esta se podría definir como la síntesis y unión de todas las artes integradas bajo la dirección de la música, que conduce a la realización de una obra original, de un modelo ideal y superior. El nuevo ideario artístico obtuvo, de este modo, un reconocimiento favorable en las diversas manifestaciones estéticas desde los años sesenta hasta las primeras décadas del siglo XX y, esencialmente bajo las formas del simbolismo. Es por tanto que al dar título a la tesis como El reflejo de Wagner en las artes plásticas españolas, no se va a circunscribir únicamente el campo de estudio exclusivo de la interpretación iconográfica e iconológica de los personajes de las óperas de Wagner, si no que se va a extender a un objetivo más amplio que sirva para analizar, social y culturalmente, el fenómeno wagneriano desde sus condicionantes ideológicos a los artísticos, haciendo una valoración objetiva de la influencia marcada o no del wagnerismo en España y muy especialmente en las artes plásticas. [pt] Esta pesquisa pretende fazer o inventário dos mais significativos exemplos de pintura mural decorativa da tradição oitocentista das fazendas do Vale do Paraíba. A partir do material obtido, o objetivo principal do trabalho é analisar e classificar tipologicamente os diferentes murais encontrados através de pesquisa teórica, observações e análise gráfica do objeto em questão, assim como a compreensão do contexto social e cultural em que surgiu este tipo de decoração no século XIX e que ainda hoje é produzido tanto no interior quanto na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Partindo de observações que evidenciam a recorrência da decoração mural européia, uma mesma linguagem visual e a questão simbólica das temáticas representadas, o trabalho busca mostrar a existência de uma tradição do que diz respeito à utilização de pinturas murais decorativas nos interiores domésticos das casas rurais da região do Vale do Paraíba. Esta pesquisa pretende também ressaltar a importância destes murais enquanto documentos iconográficos, portanto memória de uma época significativa, indispensável na preservação dos elementos simbólicos que conferem identidade regional e nacional.

[en] This work deals with the assessment of the most significant examples of the decorative mural paintings carried out during the 19th century in the Vale do Paraíba coffee farms. The aim of the study is to analyze and classify the typology of the murals found in different sites based on a theoretical fundamental approach, observations and analysis of the several paintings, considering the social and cultural context in which this particular kind of decoration arose in that century and is still considered as an important form of art appearance in the city of Rio de Janeiro and its surroundings. Starting from the observations of the farm paintings, one may suggest that they are deeply connected with the European painting heritage, which means they present the same visual language and symbolism, depicting so, the importance of such cultural expression in the interior of farmer`s houses or constructions in the Vale do Paraíba region. Finally, this research points out the importance of the mural paintings as iconographic references, and so, part of a remembrance of an important period of the Brazilian history in the course of its representative elements that give regional and national distinctiveness.

[pt] A obra pictórica de Jackson Pollock está geralmente associada à invenção do all over e das drip paintings na segunda metade da década de quarenta em Nova Iorque. De fato, tal é o momento de maestria da força poética de Pollock que, depois de anos de insistente busca da sua verdade, finalmente dá o salto que irá repotencializar toda a aventura plástica moderna, que naquele momento vivia um impasse. Esta dissertação propõe repensar o estudo da pintura de Pollock, seguindo pari passu o desenvolvimento do artista, desde o início nos anos trinta até as black paintings, último grande momento, buscando ver o que está sendo dito na obra e também o seu silêncio. O que torna-se realmente estimulante tendo-se em vista a musicalidade latente das pinturas. A pintura de Pollock deixa-se apresentar como um todo complexo, e à primeira vista contraditório, sobretudo pela diferença que marcam as fases de sua carreira. Entretanto, e aqui concentrou-se o meu esforço, visualizamos por entre o convulsivo das linhas labirinto, uma coerência na busca essencial do artista, qual seja, dar ritmo e vida à pintura. No caso de Pollock, isso tem um peso excepcional, uma vez que diz respeito a aspectos fundamentais da linguagem pictórica moderna. Jackson Pollock faz a maxima afirmação da pintura moderna no pós-guerra, e paradoxalmente, assinala um impasse que sua própria radicalidade acabou por gerar.

[en] Jackson Pollock’s paintings are usually associated with the all over and drip paintings’ inventions during the mid-forties in New York. In fact, that’s the moment where his genius came to the most exciting period of his career. After years of struggling within, he finally “broke the ice” and started to reevaluate the plastic modern adventure. This dissertation is about Pollock’s paths, since the beginnings of the thirties until the black paintings, his last big period. At first, Pollock’s work seems complex and very contradictory, however, and that’s my point, if we see through this labyrinth a very coherent line lies underneath the appearance, in search for life and rhytms to his paintings. In Pollock’s case, it gains a special flavour for it deals with fundamental aspects of the modern alphabet. Jackson Pollock makes an assertion of the painting and paradoxically reveals an impasse that his own radical art generated.

Le Liber diversarum artium, seconde copie d'un traité de technologie artistique vraisemblablement écrit dans les années 1350, est conservé à la Bibliothèque inter-universitaire de Médecine de Montpellier, dans un manuscrit du XVe siècle, le Ms H277 (vers 1470). Ce texte, par sa structure novatrice, les sources connues antérieures aux années 1300 qui l'alimentent, et leur diffusion, nous a autorisé à le mettre en regard d'œuvres peintes sur bois et sur mur des XIIe et XIIIe siècles conservées en Catalogne, comme nous aurions pu le faire avec n'importe quel autre corpus cohérent. Par le territoire « historique » qu'elle recouvre au Moyen Âge, par le nombre d'œuvres conservées et par leur grande variété esthétique et technique, la Catalogne répondait à cette cohérence. Les peintures retenues ont été envisagées du point de vue leur matérialité. La méthodologie développée pour l'aborder s'est articulée dans une dialectique constante entre le savoir écrit, théorique, du Liber ou d'autres traités, et le savoir pratique mis en œuvre par les peintres en Catalogne aux âges romans. L'observation macroscopique des œuvres, ainsi que la collecte de données physico-chimiques concernant certaines d'entre elles, ou encore notre propre expérience, nous a donné une matière propice à la compréhension du métier de peintre. De cette confrontation est née une lecture singulière, mettant au cœur de notre réflexion le peintre dans l'apprentissage et l'exercice de son métier.

The Liber diversarum artium, second copy of a treatise on artistic technology probably written in the 1350s, is held at the Inter-university Library of Medicine of Montpellier, in a fifteenth century manuscript, Ms H277 (1470). The innovative structure of this text, the pre-1300s sources it draws on, and their dissemination, enabled us to compare it with works painted on wood and walls in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries preserved in Catalonia, as with any other coherent corpus. By virtue of the "historical" territory it covers in the Middle Ages, the number of works conserved and their wide aesthetic and technical variety, Catalonia provided this coherence. The selected paintings were considered from the perspective of materiality. The methodology developed for the task was structured as a constant dialectic between written and theoretical knowledge contained in the Liber or other treatises, and the practical knowledge applied by painters in Catalonia in the Romanesque period. Macroscopic observation of the works, the collection of physicochemical data concerning some of them, and our own experience, provided us with material that was conducive to understanding the painter's craft. This comparison produced a singular reading, in which thinking is focused on the painter in the learning and the exercise of his craft.

▼ Eglon van der Neer. His Life and His Work In his own time Eglon van der Neer was highly successful. His acclaim endured throughout the eighteenth century. Nowadays he is rated as a second-rate master. Van der Neer was born in Amsterdam in 1635 or 1636 as the son of the now more famous landscape painter Aert van der Neer. He studied with Jacob van Loo in Amsterdam. Between 1654 and 1658 he stayed in Orange, in the south of France, working for the governor Count Dohna. Van der Neer returned to Amsterdam in 1658 where he married the daughter of a wealthy notary, the following year. By 1663, van der Neer had settled in Rotterdam. In 1680, van der Neer moved to Brussels, where he married the miniature painter Maria Du Chastel. On 18 July 1687, van der Neer was appointed court painter to the Spanish king Carlos II, thanks to the efforts of Gasta, the governor of the Spanish Netherlands, his real patron. In 1695 van der Neer established contacts with Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine, who immediately commissioned paintings from him. During his visits to Dsseldorf the artist met his third wife-to-be, the painter Adriana Spilberg, whom he married on 24 December 1697. By this time he had settled in Dsseldorf. In 1698, van der Neer officially became court painter of Johann Wilhelm. Van der Neer died on the third of May 1703, in Dsseldorf. Van der Neer’s preserved output consists of paintings only. Most of them are small and highly finished. Van der Neer treated all genres - history, genre, portrait and landscape – except for still life. His production is largely comprised of genre paintings in the manner of Gerard ter Borch, Pieter de Hooch, Gabriel Metsu and Frans van Mieris. However, during the last two decades of his life van der Neer painted landscapes which are excellently executed but little known. They betray a broad variety of stylistic sources, ranging from Jacques d’Arthois to Elsheimer and Jan Brueghel the Elder. Van der Neer was not a skilled figure painter. He successfully camouflaged this by borrowing from the work of more talented artists. His sources are often easy to identify. Another means to distract attention from his shortcomings was to fill his scenes with costly, shiny objects, colourful fabrics and oriental rugs. Van der Neer was unsurpassed in rendering textiles, in particular satin draperies. Adriaen van der Werff was van der Neer’s only pupil. His autobiography, early production and van der Neer’s works from the second half of the 1670s shed light on their relationship. L’étude du corps offre un angle d’approche privilégié pour appréhender les représentations théâtrales comiques de l’époque classique à Athènes et en Grande Grèce. Seule une analyse croisée des sources textuelles et iconographiques permet de faire toute la lumière sur la manière dont le corps comique était mis en scène, perçu et imaginé. Les conclusions de la thèse reposent en particulier sur la confrontation des comédies grecques du Ve et du IVe siècle av. J.-C. et de la céramique italiote à sujet comique, entre lesquelles elle établit un lien étroit. Le premier chapitre est consacré à la présentation des corpus et à leur mise en relation. Le deuxième décrit les aspects matériels du costume comique. Les troisième et quatrième portent sur la sémiologie du costume : sont d’abord étudiés les codes propres au genre, puis les éléments qui concourent à la caractérisation sociale et morale du personnage. Le cinquième et dernier chapitre traite de la fonction dramatique du geste comique.

Analysis of the body provides an effective means of capturing comic performances in classical Athens and Magna Graecia. Textual and iconographic sources ought to be considered together to shed light upon the staging of the comic body as it was perceived and imagined. In particular, the conclusions of this work are based upon the comparison of Greek comedies from the 5th and 4th centuries B.C. and South-Italian vase-paintings of comic subjects. The first chapter presents the two corpuses and the questions raised by their comparison. Chapter two describes the material characteristics of the comic costume. The third and fourth chapters focus on the semiotics of the costume ; the signs of the genre are treated first, followed by a discussion of the social and moral characterization of the personages. The final chapter pertains to the dramatic function of the comic gesture.

Le projet vise à développer une nouvelle approche méthodologique dans le but d'améliorer l'utilisation combinée de plusieurs techniques de microscopies infrarouge et X lors de l'analyse de fragments de peintures. Historiquement et ordinairement, les fragments de peintures sont préparés en coupes épaisses polies et les analyses sont réalisées à la surface de ces dernières. Bien que cette préparation d'échantillon facilite sa manipulation ainsi que son orientation lors des analyses, elle limite aussi l'efficacité et la faisabilité de certaines techniques de microscopie. Par conséquent, ce travail propose d'explorer une nouvelle stratégie analytique : la préparation et l'analyse de coupes fines. Ces deux étapes ont été optimisées et validées dans le cadre d'analyses par µFTIR, µXRD, µXRF et µXANES. En parallèle, de nouvelles possibilités analytiques ont été testées dans le cadre de l'analyse des peintures, basées sur la technique XANES plein champ. Les échantillons de peintures se sont révélés être d'excellents candidats pour évaluer les avantages et inconvénients de cette technique pour les matériaux du Patrimoine Culturel en général.

This project aims at developing a new methodological approach, providing a more efficient and synergetic use of FTIR and X-ray microscopies, for the analysis of painting fragments. Usually, painting fragments are prepared as polished sections and analyses are carried out on the cross-section surface. This sample preparation is easy to handle, however ends into critical constraints regarding feasibility and efficiency of micro-analyses. We propose to explore a different strategy: preparation and analysis of thin sections. These preparation procedures were first optimized and validated with µFTIR, µXRF, µXRD and µXANES. Besides, new methodological capabilities based on full-field/µXANES were assessed. Paintings were ideal candidates for estimating pros and cons of this new strategy for CH materials in general.
