"This thesis explores the cancer post-treatment experience in survivors’ and their families’ lives from the perspective of service design. The literature review and primary research revealed that although established support systems providing help for cancer survivors and their families and studies focus on understanding their needs and wants during and after cancer treatment do exist, there are still many gaps that need to be filled, especially during the transition period from when a patient finishes his or her treatments to long-term survivorship. There is a lack of an integrated way that presents the journey of cancer and help survivors and their families to understand where they currently are and where they could achieve in the future, which could help them to plan ahead and prepare for the coming challenges. Also, there is a lack of unified model to show them to designers and cancer care providers for their use to make positive changes. These lead to an opportunity for service design to bridge the gap and empower cancer survivors in they’re life after cancer and help them to transition to a positive and meaningful life in the long run. As a result of this finding, a design framework to create understanding and facilitate innovation in cancer care was proposed. This framework communicates cancer survivors’ needs and wants, which allows survivors to be prepared and informed in their cancer journey. It also allows designers and cancer care providers to engage, and to enable for a holistic design solution to develop desirable, viable, feasible service concept to improve survivors’ and their families’ quality of life. These methods include cancer experience mapping, insights into the experiences of cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and family & friends, and taking emotional and philosophical understandings of these life experiences into consideration as important components of innovation."

"The service industry is undergoing a rapid increase in the volume of employment, number of firms, business opportunities and new markets development. Today, small business represent 99.7 percent of all United States firms that is 28.8 million organizations with a total of 56.8 million employees (SBA, 2016a, 2017). However, close to 50 percent of new small businesses (including startups) fail within the first five years of operation. There are two reasons associated with such failure; the first, is lack of business opportunities, and the second is the skills mismatch between the managers, employees and businesses (Sarasvathy, Menon, & Kuechle, 2013). In their struggle to survive, most of the small businesses develop business alliances or networks as their cooperate strategy to expand the scale and scope of their activities. These challenges and practices prompt the question of whether Service Design as a discipline can contribute to the viability of small business, due to the level of complexity that small businesses currently face. This thesis attempts to gain a deep understanding of current circumstances and challenges small businesses have to overcome and establish a connection between the effectuation approach, posited by the reputed academic author and specialist in small business strategy by Saras Sarasvathy (Sarasvathy, Kumar, York, & Bhagavatula, 2014) and the service ecosystem, theories developed by the seminal work of marketing professors Stephen Vargo and Robert Lusch in the field of service (Vargo & Lusch, 2014). Once the connection is made, this thesis develops a design solution that offers a visualization of a new 'Effectual-Ecosystem Framework'. This suggested framework offers a new perspective on the specific way, small businesses manage to overcome their challenges from a service design perspective. Finally, the researcher suggests a discussion for future research, at the intersection of small businesses and Service Design research."

"This paper explores the intersection between spatiality and servicescapes, particularly in the context of liminality. As service ecosystems become more complex, there is an increasing need to understand perceptions of spaces. Many spatial theories, such as spatiality, reveal a symbiotic relationship between external stimuli (e.g., social or physical) and internal, cognitive processes. These mental models and institutions become semiotic representations for sense-making. ‘Place’ and ‘non-place’ then become intrinsic components in the concept of spatiality, as assigning meaning to place relies on ingrained perceptions and identity with, or influence of, communities. Due to the ambiguous and transitory nature of liminal spaces where services are exchanged or provided, liminal servicescapes become compelling platforms to study social and spatial phenomenon. Historically, research of servicescapes have focused primarily on environmental and physical dimensions (e.g., the five senses) and customer satisfaction. Social and online servicescape frameworks have been developed, yet are not contextualized by liminal spaces. Liminal studies have examined cultural and organizational change, rites of passage, and more traditional philosophical and anthropological phenomenon. Service design, which augments the potential for value cocreation, functions both as a mindset, process, and tool to better understanding liminal servicescapes. Latent content analysis of this research, including an audit of literature and a close-up study conducted across six types of establishments, reveals five determinants of liminal servicescapes. This contributes a new perspective and framework to the existing body of knowledge surrounding spatiality, liminality, and servicescapes, and is relevant for service design practitioners and adjacent professionals addressing liminal experiences."

"This paper explores the manifestation of disability in the context of interactions between customers and employees in retail environments. In the retail environment, people with disabilities make up a $220 billion dollar segment of the market that could be tapped into (U.S. Census Bureau/Internet Retailer, 2007); however, their needs are often unmet due to service personnel, store environmental factors, other customers’ behavior, and product/service assortment (Baker 2007). The phenomenon of disability has been traced back to the earliest forms of human societies and its theorization of disability has greatly varied over time. This includes different frameworks, such as the 'biomedical model of disability,' the 'social model of disability,' which attribute the manifestation of disability to either physiological limitations or poorly designed environmental factors, respectively. More recent literature in the field of disability studies suggests approaching the concept of disability non-dualistically, towards an 'embodied' view where disability is understood through an phenomenological inquiry in the lived experience of individuals with disabilities (Beudaert 2018). Service blueprinting, a popular tool within the discipline of service design which captures the complexity of service exchanges from a holistic perspective (Bitner 2007), has the potential to highlight the external and internal factors that affect customers with disabilities in a retail environment and may be particularly useful in the training of new retail employees, in order to improve their interactions with customers of all types, and with people with disabilities more in particular. This thesis attempts to make a connection between customers with disabilities needs and the training for retail employees. After this connection is established, a design solution is introduced which exposes retail employees to an embodied view of disability through service blueprinting, for the purpose of better addressing the service delievery."
