A ação metodológica
facilitar a adaptação e interação do aluno internacional. O
plural.
[en] This research has as its theme the relation
between Design and Crosscultural studies. It was guided by the idea
that design actions are capable of facilitate social interaction
among people and minimize cultural shocks caused by cultural
differences. This study was developed based on cultural
categorization models of Richard Lewis and Geert Hofstede,
cross-cultural studies´ authors. It illustrates reflections of
designers and authors such as Patrick Jordan and Jorge Frascara,
who consider cultural singularities relevant to design actions as
well as to the development process of products and services
designed to the contemporary world. This research focuses on
international students, hosted at PUC-Rio through the International
Programs Central Coordination Office, as well as their experience
at the university campus and with the new culture. The main
methodological action of this study corresponded to the interview
with a group of students composed by: North-American, Mexican and
Japanese students, cultures defined through Richard D Lewis’
cultural categorization. Such method was organized under four
themes: motivational factors and information source; expectations
towards the new culture; differences between students and Brazilian
culture, cultural shock and adaptation; and actions to facilitate
the adaptation and interaction of international students. The main
objective of this study is to contribute to the project, planning
and development of cross-cultural products and services through…

[en] Nowadays, with the growing popularity of the
Internet and mobile devices, interactive systems have increasingly
gained ground among different people, with different cultural
backgrounds. However, the design of the interaction that takes
place between the users and those systems is not properly supported
by tools nor notations, turning the interactive experience into a
mere consequence of the internal functions of the systems – in
which errors are treated as exceptions and must therefore be
avoided, instead of properly supported. This work presents a study
on how systems design might be supported by a model that combines
interaction and interface design, and a tool to support this
modeling and to generate prototypes, supporting the designer’s
reflection about the interactive solution being created. The MoLIC
language is used to represent the systems behaviour and sketches
are used to represent the interface in a combined model. The
prototypes are generated from a sequence of sketches, guided by the
interaction model. An exploratory study was conducted in order to
gather feedback about the proposed approach and to investigate the
feasibility of the integrated project of interaction and
interface.

sociedade atual.
internet.
[en] The child s interaction with technology is
present in societies for long time and is not a specific feature of
contemporary society. The fact that children are dominating and
interacting with complex technologies each time earlier in
situations that were once restricted to adult s universe, such as
the Internet, seems more evident in society today. We regard that
new technologies are changing the way the social relations are
formed and developed, as much as their meanings. We understand that
the contemporary children are immerse on those new relations and
are, in this context, creating theirs identity and becoming
subjects of this society. The main issue of this research is the
designer s role as mediator in children s processes language,
identity and meaning development as they interact with online
game’s interfaces for children. We observed a group of children
between 10 and 11 years, residents of Rocinha and Vidigal
communities, in South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, during their
activities in the Khouse project, hosted by the Informatics
Department of Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. We
conclude by understanding the role of design as a maintainer of
myths and stereotypes, and indicate it is vital to reflect on his
place as a promoter of new concepts and acquisition of knowledge of
the child in its relationship with the Internet.

Schön (1983) investiga a epistemologia

tecnologia computacional e a persuasão. A pesquisa propõe uma
comparação entre tendências de desenvolvimento da tecnologia
persuasiva sugeridas anteriormente e o momento atual. O estudo
A partir deste
captologia.
[en] The main subject of this dissertation is
captology, an area of study that comprehends the overlap of
computer technology and persuasion. The research proposes a
comparison between earlier suggested and the current development
trends of persuasive technology. The study begins with a
contextualization addressing the relation between society and
computer technologies. It approaches the interaction design, with
focus on the user, analyzing design approaches for the area with
emphasis, at first, in user centered design, and then in experience
design. In addition, the realm of ubiquity is presented as an
important factor, when it comes to social/cultural, technological
and usage views, concerning persuasive technology. A captology
concept is then presented, with the ethical issues involved in
designing with persuasion and the trends for the area, pointed by
B.J. Fogg, one of the pioneers in the study of computers as
persuasive agents. Focusing these trends, the research scope is
delimited, defining iPhone fitness applications as core objects for
the study. The dissertation presents the research, from the
browsing and selecting process of applications, as well as
interviews with developers, questionnaires with users and
predictive evaluation of selected applications, to finally
elaborate a comparative analysis between the pointed trends and the
achieved results in the present moment, which reflect captology s
state of the art.

fluidez, robôs a trabalhos customizados e complexos.
[en] Nowadays, the constant technological advances,
and consequently the graphical user interfaces, have become more
and more present in the humanmachine interaction. However, in a
context where intelligent systems, such as robotic systems, are
already a reality, there are still gaps to be filled when we think
about integrating robots with custom and complex activities. This
research aims on the analysis of Robot User Interfaces (RUIs)
usability. When well executed, such interfaces allow operators to
remotely perform tasks in complex environments. To that intent, our
hypothesis is that, if RUIs are conceived considering the
specificities of these interaction models, operational failures
will be reduced. The main goal of this research was to evaluate
specific guidelines for robotic systems, understanding their
relevance in usability. For a theoretical basis, the existing
models of interaction with robots and autonomous systems were
raised; as well as the design principles that apply to these
models. After a bibliographic review, we conducted contextual
interviews with users of robotic systems, and usability tests…

[en] This thesis presents a proposal for the teaching
of Physical Computing in an undergraduate Design course, based on
the Reflective Practice methodology defined by Donald Schon (1983).
The study comprises de definition, conception and implementation of
a Physical Computing learning environment. In the study, the
context of Ubiquitous Computing defined by Marc Weiser (1991) is
explored, and a relation between this context and the field of
knowledge of Physical Computing (O SULLIVAN, 2004) as an emerging
area of Interaction Design is established. The Physical Computing
Learning Environment is proposed after a series of initiatives that
comprehend the development of academic disciplines,
interdisciplinary collaborative processes, and the creation of a
laboratory. Subsequently, we present a discussion about the results
of the creation of this environment. In the discussion, we
investigate how and why the experience in the Physical Computing
learning environment was determinant in the definition of the
methodological Design processes used, in order to understand what
are the characteristics of such processes and its
results.

design gráfico no livro didático destinado a comunidades
específicas.

for the inclusion of pictorial elements and to the

This is on the assumption also that teachers, who should act as

[en] Advancements in microelectronics have enabled
both miniaturization and portability of computer equipment and,
especially, the individual use of it. Thus, this technology have
been introduced in the research of the Laboratory for Investigation
in Living Design – LILD, Department of Arts and Design from the
Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – by its
members, and their personal computers, as a way to support the
development of their studies. This study focuses on the observation
of the systematic introduction of computer graphics technology in
the LILDs trial and error approach, and aims to present the usage
of this tool serving as a new platform to the researches that have
been developed in the laboratory. In this manner, this research
demonstrates what was observed during the application of this new
technology in ongoing studies; as well as their interactive
relation with traditional methods, which involves mechanical
models, be it in reduced scale or ready to use. As a result, it is
verified an enrichment of the researches in course in the
laboratory, mainly, in relation to the aspects of precision,
documentation and transportation of models; and also concerning new
ways of visualization and reflection, different from traditional
ones, previously non-existent to the application of computer
graphics.

compreensão, explicação e manutenção do produto produzido. Estas
DR.

product and requires different expertise to perform it. The
information produced during each activity is very important for the
continuity of the process and to understand, explain and maintain
the product produced. This information must be related and
integrated in a clear and coherent speech, allowing traceability
and addressing the origin and the context in which they were
produced. It is noted, however, that the proposed process catch and
modeling in HCI design provide a fragmented and/or incomplete view
of this process. For this reason, we propose an epistemic model,
based on Design Rationale (DR), suitable for the recording and
modeling of the design of interactive systems. Based on the review
and analysis of the key views and proposals of the design process,
their requirements, models, notations and support languages, the
epistemic model Ideia has been proposed. The model has as its main
goal to register and report design activities in a cohesive manner,
offering support for the reflection of the…

O impacto e a
campo do design.
[en] This research proposes a number of methods and
principles to explore the sound in a design process. Issues related
to sound aspects seems to be neglected during the design process.
So, how could a designer, even without a formal sound or musical
training, use sound in the projects in a constructive, intentional
and objective way? In order to answer this question, we
investigated the impact of changes in sound landscapes in the last
decades, caused by the industrialization and mechanization of
society, which made it possible to dissociate the sound from its
emitter, allowing the former one to be manipulated, examined and
dissected. The impact and perception of sounds by individuals are
also discussed. To do so, the knowledge coming from acoustics,
psychoacoustics and attentional mechanisms are used. We also mapped
the state of the art, evolution and, application of these sounds in
different fields of knowledge, such as human-computer interaction,
sonic interaction design, cinema, and musicology, with the purpose
of obtaining a relevant contribution to the design field. As a
result of this exploration, we propose a set of guiding principles
and exploratory methods for sounds as audible affordances for
design. Finally, future applications and studies in relation to the
use of these principles and methods are suggested.

▼ The area of mobile web is evolving rapidly but there are still no consensus regarding recommendations or best practices within the topic. Therefore this thesis is focused on interaction design within mobile web and compiles many dierent theories into guidelines for mobileweb design. The thesis may also be used as a foundation when deciding whether to developa native mobile application or a mobile adapted web application, or when choosing betweena separate mobile web application and a responsive web design.Components that are especially considered in this thesis are form elements and navigation menus. These are discussed relative to interaction on small touch screens such as smartphones and tablets. For example, text input elements can be optimized for the intended input format and one can take advantage of the device's native components for e.g. time and date input. A prototype of a responsive web application is also developed to further exemplify the theoretical theories. This is a exploratory study for the Swedish magazine Resume in collaboration with The Mobile Life and is focused on convert the original site into a responsive design, but still retain the overall Resume look and feel.

guias e quadros. A IHC é uma área que estuda o projeto e uso de
tecnologia computacional, em especial a interação entre
computadores e pessoas. Este estudo adaptou o
Communication-Centered Design (CCD) e o eXtreme
Communication-Centered Design (eXCeeD), outros processos de design
centrados na comunicação fundamentados na Engenharia Semiótica
(EngSem).
propostos.
[en] Lean Communication-Centered Design (LeanCCD) is a
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) design process, which consists of
conducting a workshop, detailing user goals, combining interaction
models with paper sketches, and testing them with users, supported
by guides and templates. This study adapted the
Communication-Centered Design (CCD) and the eXtreme
Communication-Centered Design (eXCeeD), other
communication-centered design processes grounded on Semiotic
Engineering (SemEng). SemEng defines the interaction as a
computer-mediated communication process between designers and
users. Approaches and processes based on SemEng are not used to
directly yield the answer to a problem, but to increase the
problem-solver s understanding of the problem itself and the
implication it brings about. Process evaluation in a case study, in
the industry, proved itself difficult, both in carrying out LeanCCD
activities and in the correct application of some techniques and
concepts. However, unlike eXCeeD, we were able to observe a
systematic use of questions that contributed to designers
reflection, aided by the proposed templates and
guides.

necessidade especial. A presente pesquisa é o desdobramento do
A partir do
Desta forma, a presente pesquisa

pesquisa.
[en] Big digital media companies have embraced agile
methods to develop products in shorter cycles. With this, the time
to test the interfaces was reduced. Through observations, we found
that short tests do not always answer to all questions that need
investigation with users. In order to propose a methodology for
empirical usability evaluation, designed specifically to better fit
the needs of teams who develop products with agile methods, we
performed a case study in Globo.com, with the team that designed
the site Receitas.com through the Scrum agile methodology. With the
completion of a focus group, we assessed the scene and found the
research questions. From there, it was found that application of
only one technique would not answer most of these issues. Moreover,
if applied in a more traditional way, could take a long time. As a
hypothesis, it was believed that the creation and application of a
methodology for empirical evaluation of usability, specifically
designed to better match the needs of these teams, would be able to
solve the problem through the optimization and application of
techniques together, such as interview, eye tracking and usability
testing. The methodology was validated through interviews with each
team member s development Receitas.com. The results confirmed the
hypothesis.

ambiente.
destacando o papel do design nessa problemática. Apresenta a

As pessoas ainda
A televisão impulsiona o

A partir
docentes tutores.
[en] This research deals with interaction mediated by
communication and collaboration tools in virtual learning
environments, within the context of distance education, and from
the standpoint of pedagogical usability and interaction design. It
is assumed that there are problems related to interaction mediated
by virtual learning environments that hinder the implementation of
teaching strategies of DE-based collaboration and communication.
Thus, the study, based on teachers reports, aims to find
requirements and issues that may influence the use of virtual
learning environments for planning and implementation of
collaborative teaching strategies. In addition to bringing
contributions to the design of a distance education based on
collaboration and communication, research contributes
methodologically to the area of interaction design with the
proposition of the use of scenario-based interview technique.
Unstructured interviews were conducted with professionals of
distance education, to support the development of scenarios that
served as subjects for the interview technique based on scenarios
with teachers directly involved in interactions with students
during courses. The interviews include detailed descriptions of how
these professionals put into practice pedagogical strategies based
on communication and collaboration and expose the growing role of
tutoring in distance education pedagogical models that propose…

▼ Platform Design is a study of different viewpoints on the creation of digital systems, and how they converge in platforms designed, built, and managed by communities. As sociotechnical constructs in which features emerge through the interaction of different stakeholders, platforms are understood as both means and outcomes—the ‘things’ or boundary objects in a design process—generating the spaces where communities of practice can form.
Utilizing two strongly interwoven timelines in education and research (both in academia and industry), the thesis shifts the centre of balance in actor–networks by iteratively recalibrating from a techno-deterministic analysis towards a community-driven one. The theoretical background in the fields of cybernetics, critical theory, design, and the sociology of technology frames the empirical work, which consists of academic publications, design reports, and the publicly available documentation of realized projects. In the space between theory and praxis, a methodological toolbox is developed, a posteriori revisiting experiences gathered over a decade Drawing on a series of functional concepts, the thesis proposes an alternative co-design framework, termed inclusive multiple prototyping. Meant to augment new sensibilities that are pertinent to the design process of platforms, this framework addresses the inherent complexity of actor–networks and human–machine communities.
In practical terms, the thesis describes a series of projects, some of which can be considered platforms, while others would be better categorized as tools, toolboxes, kits, or infrastructure. These include co-creating the Arduino community, repurposing kitchen appliances for connection to the cloud, designing a modular prototyping platform involving programming and electronics, deploying an indoor location system, creating educational kits for upper secondary school teachers, and inventing new haptic interactive interfaces. Some of the projects required the long-term involvement of the researcher in intimate communities of practice; others were temporal interventions, yet reached thousands of users. Practice-based and transdisciplinary, the thesis contributes to the field of interaction design by bringing in elements of a sociotechnical discourse, while problematizing notions such as democracy and governance, openness of tools and outcomes, modularity, generalizability, and transferability—the three latter terms further fuelling the research questions. The research shows that these are properties that enable the creation of platforms, although the question remains whether there is such a thing as a standardized platform. While this thesis touches upon the potentials of state-of-the-art platform technology, it also points to the fact that there is work to be done, socially, ethically, and politically, when considering the augmentation of platforms for everyday use as pervasive and artificial intelligence agents.

▼ What if a computer wasn’t necessarily the best place for kids to learn the fundamentals of coding? A new wave of digital coding teaching tools has been ushered into America, with the country progressively gaining more interest in having kids learn code. The goal of this project has been to propose an alternative teaching method, one focused and tailored to students who learn best through kinesthetic and visual means. The approach has been to combine tangible interaction principles to help make the introductory stages of learning code as approachable and intuitive as possible. The final result of this thesis is a modular toy system which gradually introduces kids to the fundamentals of coding independent of a computer, prompting exploration and problem solving.

presentes no 16 Feira Nacional do Livro Infantil e Juvenil,
permitiu enxergar as visões projetuais dessas edições. Constatamos
[en] The present research aims to understand the
project visions that accompany pocket books that belong to the
gender of children and adolescent literature in the national scene.
It interests us to contribute to the understanding of which are the
project visions applied to pocket books and how Design participates
in the mediation of reading of the contemporary public. We assume
that Design is the mediator of reading and, consequently, that the
graphic project of pocket editions participates actively in the
reading habits and the creation of meaning for the reader. We have
selected as a research focus the pocket books that were found in
the 16th National Book Fair of Children and Adolescents, which
occurred between May 28th and June 8th, 2014 in the city of Rio de
Janeiro. In the field research, we have encountered the different
ways in which readers relate to these editions. From the survey of
children and adolescent books, we have made a graphic analysis of
the design of nine of them, which were edited by L&PM,
BestBolso and Zahar and allowed us to see the project visions of
these editions. We have concluded that in the pocket books
published by these publishing houses the maintenance of the
parameters related to the historical and formal characteristics of
this object is predominant. Finally, we highlight the importance of
mediating role of Design on the approach and formation of new
readers, pointing out the potentialities yet not explored…

[en] The accessibility is a quality that is still
under-considered in Design projects, but increasingly necessary in
different ways of interaction between humans and systems. There are
many approaches at present intended to universalize methods to
design accessible products, systems, and environments for people
with disability. The existence of so many procedures culminates, in
the same proportion, in frustration in the development of Design
projects that aim to develop products to be really effective,
efficient, and bring satisfaction to users, in human diversity
scope. It is possible to verify this fact by the routine of people
with visual impairment that can present different functional
necessities, according to the component of the eye that was
affected. This dissertation presents qualitative research, outlined
from participatory field observation, wich character is exploratory
and experimental, substantiated by the documentary analysis of the
laws related to visual impairment, accessibility and also to Higher
Education. Questionnaires and enquiries were used to investigate
the users. This data showed up gaps where the Ergonomics features
methods to improve quality in user interaction to usability issues
and Human-computer interaction; and Universal Design and Universal
Design for Learning can improve Accessibility issues.

plataforma.
arquivos digitais relacionados à tarefa proposta pela disciplina
também favorecem um aprendizado mais imersivo e
eficiente.
[en] Usability in e-learning: evaluation of methods of
presentation of content for teaching computer graphics software.
Through the internet the concept of distance education has been
significantly expanded. Its ease of transmission has been
considered a very useful alternative for the development and
training of students over the last few years. This research has as
object of study the interaction between design students and
education systems available on the web platform (elearning) in
learning computer graphics software. Brazil is in the process of
consolidating distance education, but the lack of experience in
transposing the teaching method to a new information distribution
platform leads to sometimes expensive and misleading teaching
proposals. A solid understanding of user behavior is necessary
before defining the platform interface. Through three prototypes of
e-learning it was possible to verify the efficiency and
completeness of tasks proposed from the variations in the design of
the interface and in the components that present the content of the
discipline. The results showed that the e-learning interface
design, which takes into account the reduction of the user s
cognitive load, using appropriate presentation components, favors

▼ Expressive input is the culmination of 18 weeks of prototyping, ideation and research conducted as my degree project at Umeå Institute of Design. The project presents three design provocations which aim to raise questions about the potential opportunity to create a dialogue with the physical controls we interact with. While words like “smart” or “connected” get thrown around quite often, this work aims to show that there is a role for expression within the relationship we have with our devices. Expression within this context is defined as how we can make user interfaces that leverage the advances in sensors and feedback in order to feel more human. The work presents three scenarios that might exist within an Automotive context, and demonstrates solutions that encourage users to maintain visual attention on the task of driving. The project was conducted by running a series of short sprints that were focused on specific problems, the intention of this approach was to identify unique opportunities for future design work to explore.

[en] This thesis is on the study, research, and
theoretical basis of the connections and interactions between
design and intellectual property (IP). The intellectual creations
of design encompass characteristics that are compatible with most
protection modalities defined in IP. However, it is necessary to
accurately comprehend their flow in the legal system. Limited
knowledge of their contents and interactions poses difficulties in
comprehensive management of intellectual creations using the
system. To allow it to be understood in its entirety, a systemized
classification has been developed (taxonomy) of the creative
content of IP, enabling an overview of the system from the
perspective of the aesthetic and technical characteristics of the
creations, the derived creative content, and the hybrid creative
objects. With the taxonomy, it was possible to identify the minimal
creative content that corresponds to higher education courses of
projective content and, specifically, to qualifications and
specialties in design. Attention was also paid to the areas of
interaction between design and IP related to the collection and
analysis of project data or making strategic decisions; the
protection, defense, negotiation, and appropriation of intellectual
creations; and the exercise of new skills by the designer. The
skills expected to be developed through teaching and learning IP
are shown to be related to each area of interaction. These skills
are based on the recommendations of the IP curriculum…
