1. JOANA DOMINGUEZ GONZALEZ BOUÈRES BELEZA. [en] THE SOCIAL LIFE OF BOOK: A RESEARCH ON SOCIAL REPRESENTATION, MATERIAL CULTURE AND CONSUMPTION.

Degree: 2016, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro

[en] Analyzing the book in light of the Anthropology of Consumption is a curious way of understanding the cultural values, on the basis of the route of this object which, once highlighted, sets the society hopes for reaching the universal nature of communication - role attributed to reading- but that adopts, during its career, new directions and connections. In contemporary society, amid the information age (fleeting), we can notice that the book, from the power of its materiality, carries fixed cultural significations , acts as a symbol of noble values and participates as an important element of a signification system and social classification. Having as the investigation object this complex material, in order to analyze it beyond its literary content, this research aims to understand the legible part of its material shape. Taking into consideration that the high cultural value of the book is, most of times, more than its primal role, we, thus, intend to understand its specificity as object and ponder about the established consumption relations, starting from a bibliographic revision on the consumption and the material culture approach fields; from the analyses of the representations of this cultural heritage in the media speech and the identification of the different uses of this artifact on the ornamental field – a trajectory that was mentioned by regular readers in interviews and architects in the architecture exhibition Casa Cor Rio, and by applying a…

2. MARINA PIQUET FERNANDES. [en] THE INTERIOR AT THE MARGIN: THE ROLE OF GENDER IN THE PROCESS OF PROFESSIONALIZING INTERIOR DESIGN.

Degree: 2019, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro

[en] The interior at the margin: the role of gender in the process of professionalizing Interior Design analyzes the process where Decoration, an activity originally domestic, amateur and, crucially, feminine was transformed in a new discipline and profession known today as Interior Design. This process, which occurred between the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, was a result of the incorporation of technical innovations and values of Modernism in Architecture and Design. It was also directly influenced by other aspects of modernity, such as the distinction between the public and private spheres, urbanization, mass production, and emerging consumer habits. Crucially, this process was also marked by strategies to legitimize the professional status of the activity that had gender discrimination as its core. Based on the observation that the (relatively few) existing publications on the subject based a History of Interior Design exclusively in its points of contact with Architecture and in iconic modern male architects, this research analyzes and emphasizes the contribution of women to this process. In search of a feminist and feminine approach to the History of Interior Design, the importance of the contribution of women from non-professional places of production is highlighted, as well as the trajectories of professionals who have succeeded in the area despite the opposition offered by gender stereotypes.
