▼ Due to medical advances, there has been an increased number of burn survivors, thus creating a dire need for research on burn recovery. As 70% of burn-injured patients are male, it is especially important to examine how men understand healing from a burn injury. One way to explore this is by investigating men’s stories of healing because it is through and by the experiential space of narrative that individuals are provided with the tools to reflect on and find meaning from their experiences of burn injuries. This thesis examined
narratives men constructed about healing from a burn injury. Adult men with 0.5 – 30% total body surface area burned were recruited for an in-depth semi-structured interview, two to fifty-two weeks post-injury. Narrative analysis of the transcripts revealed that men principally constructed a dominant narrative that involved wanting to return to a life that was “normal” as soon as possible. I argue that these stories are indicative of a restitution storyline, that is, they follow a plotline in which the men view themselves as being temporarily injured but soon recovered. I then explore how agency, or more specifically, how agentic behaviours facilitate these
narratives about men returning to their pre-injury selves. Men also constructed
narratives about boredom, grief and regrets at the same time as the restitution
narratives. These
narratives indicated distress because they were
counter to the stories that the men wanted to construct. The discussion contextualizes the men’s restitution
narratives in terms of masculine socialization, and considers the role of agency in informing narrative plotlines. Lastly, recommendations to health care providers who treat men that have survived a burn injury are provided.
Advisors/Committee Members: Medved, Maria (Psychology) (supervisor), Hiebert-Murphy, Diane (Psychology) Logsetty, Sarvesh (Surgery) (examiningcommittee).

▼ This paper analyses the deployment of counter-narratives on social media as part of counter violent extremism (CVE) strategies aimed at degrading Islamic State’s ability to recruit foreign fighters and inspire attacks abroad. It argues that the bulk of counter-narrative content emerges out of a small network of NGOs, think-tanks and organizations based in London which is conceptualized as a lattice. The quantity of counter-narrative content emerging from this lattice and elsewhere, whilst significant, is vastly mismatched by the scale of Islamic State content produced at their operational apex, and is frequently overestimated by policy papers and CVE reports from social media companies. Successful counter-narrative campaigns – identified by their adherence to academic communications theory and prevalence within CVE policy spheres – demonstrate the need for religious narratives in which normative Islam plays an active yet embedded role in modern societies outside of the so-called caliphate.

▼ In movies, television, and music, South Central Los Angeles is portrayed as a place made up of gang violence, poverty, and failure. Young people of color every day construct their identities based on the messages they receive and through their own lived experiences. Media perpetuates specific stereotypes that inform people’s understanding of South Central, but youth voices are rarely heard. This thesis explores how autobiographical devising as
counter-storytelling can provide a space for young people to disrupt stereotypes. Through playbuilding as a qualitative research method, the author examines how autobiographical devising can be used to build a critical
counter-storytelling community among young people, while providing a space to share their stories with each other, with their communities, and with outsiders. The document examines three devising activities as sites for disruption of stereotypes and the possibilities of public performance as a call to action. The study finds that through an interaction with dominant
narratives and the consequent sharing of
counter-
narratives, or the stories from the margins, the youth participants pushed against problematic stereotypes through the simultaneous embodiment and interrogation of particular stereotypes, the sharing of acts of kindness, the creation of frozen and spoken images that aim to place youth perspectives into the dominant narrative, and the staging of their lives and ideas for an audience. The document concludes with a discussion of the future possibilities of the work in research and practice, as well as a discussion of what an applied
counter-storytelling theatre model can provide practitioners within the fields of Applied Theatre and Critical Race Theory.

▼ This thesis examines the counter-narratives Jonas Hassen Khemiri constructs to challenge Orientalism in his play INVASION! Khemiri’s use of oppositional narratives and disidentification challenges the narrow confines of Middle Eastern/Arab stereotypes by using story and performance to decenter the White Western lens. By examining the context of Swedishness from which Khemiri’s work grows, the construct of the Orientalized Other, and the play itself, this thesis demonstrates how Khemiri disrupts systemic racism and creates a stage, both literally and figuratively, to address race and national identity in Sweden and, by implication, in the United States. I show how the storytelling in Khemiri’s play INVASION! and the Chicago production I directed serve to fracture the dominant White narrative and to offer a counter-narrative that puts the ideas of Critical Race Theory into practice.

▼ This qualitative research study explores how students in Northern California public schools are navigating the space between being Palestinian and being American while preserving and reconstructing Palestinian cultural ties and traditions. It also examines the ways in which schools and educators can better support students in this process of negotiation and development of a positive transnational identity. Through the collection of
counter-
narratives, this research works to disrupt the Islamophobic dominant narrative that pervades the educational system and other institutions as well as the wider society in the United States.
The findings of this research include the identification of Islamophobia as a major impediment for positive, integrated identity development for Palestinian-American youth in Northern California. The data also suggests that while students are interested in a curriculum which better reflects the diversity of the students in an increasingly globalized world, of greater importance is the development of a critical mindset through the application of culturally sustaining pedagogies that enable students to learn to think more critically, be more open and inclusive, participate constructively in discussions, and take action to shift oppressive discourses and challenge systems of oppression.

▼ The thesis traces the rise of Mosireen, a non-profit media collective, within the parameters of revolutionary and post-revolutionary Egypt’s public sphere. It highlights how the Mosireen Collective strategically co-opted the infrastructure of the internet during critical periods of the Egyptian revolution as a tool of resistance to fight injustice, expose human rights violations and restore some semblance of accountability. Moreover, it explores Mosireen’s innovative online/offline digital activism which enabled formerly marginalized publics to access new modes of information and challenge elite-driven discourses, thereby contributing to the ‘democratization’ of the public sphere. The thesis further investigates Mosireen’s emancipatory use of technology where the creation of an oppositional framework not only sustained ‘resistance from below’ movements but also seemed to open up new potentialities for counter-hegemonic spaces and alternative discursive frameworks of society. The thesis provides a rich case study in how ideological struggles and questions of power are interpreted within the broader realm of Egyptian civil society with a particular focus on the power of visual production and its effect on the development of digital counter-publics. Finally, the limitations of the public sphere under neo-liberal capitalism are contextualized and critiqued within the context of the Mosireen Collective and broader digital resistance movements. Through a visual analysis of Mosireen’s online archive, this research makes an original contribution by conducting an in-depth investigation into the efficacy of citizen media in exposing human rights violations and state crime in Egypt.

▼ Alternative education is a broad and often contested concept. Beginning in the 1960s, the alternative education movement initially aimed to decentralize authority over schooling, providing educational options to students, families, and communities. For the early alternative education movement, the lack of rigid parameters around what alternative education is and what it is not allowed for innovation and rapid growth. However, over the last sixty years, distinct
narratives describing alternative education have emerged, which create varied and even antithetical possibilities for how alternative education is understood. These
narratives have formed discourses. Discourses construct social reality, determining what can be perceived as true, important, and possible. Three distinct discourses describe alternative education as creating: true alternatives, innovative schools that change teaching and learning; safety valve alternatives, schools that allow for the removal of “disruptive students;” and safety net alternatives, schools that provide support for students whose needs are not met by comprehensive schools.
While the changing meaning of alternative education and the problems associated with it are well documented by research, a smaller number of studies examine the causes behind these changes. This study uses qualitative interview methodology to explore alternative school leaders’ understandings of alternative education’s purpose. Focusing on leaders who work within public-school district controlled, brick and mortar, alternative schools and programs in eastern Pennsylvania, this study explores the questions: how do alternative school leaders understand alternative education’s purpose and how do their understandings align with prevailing discourses?
The findings of this study indicate that safety valve discourse, which describes alternative education as behavioral placements to which “disruptive students” are assigned, has become the dominant view of alternative education in eastern Pennsylvania. At the same time, this study found that many alternative school leaders hold complex beliefs about alternative education and their work, associating alternative education with multiple meanings, including support, innovation, and meeting the needs of students. For some participants, these complex meanings form
counter-
narratives, which challenge the assumptions inherent in safety valve discourse and redefine students as capable and the purpose of alternative education as helping all students realize their potential.

▼ As people are faced with imposed precarity in contemporary society, it is imperative that art be reclaimed as a tool for the assertion of
counter-
narratives and expressions of agency. In this thesis, I utilize theories of affect and materiality toward the analysis of three case studies in contemporary art to consider how they could contradict or
counter the affective consequences of oppressive structures and the imposition of exclusivist
narratives. First, I discuss the public art project Monument Lab for its interrogation of the role of monuments in contemporary society. As an ongoing, participatory project, Monument Lab affirms the coexistence of diverse experiences of American history, resisting retrospective oversimplification by which the durational effects of past events are obscured. In the second chapter, I analyze the immersive installation <i>Untitled</i> (<i>of occult instability</i>) [<i>feelings</i>] by South African artist Dineo Seshee Bopape. In contrast to scholarship that posits the authoritative ability of artists and museums to direct viewers, I argue for a recognition of art experiences as a generative exchange informed by the diverse agencies of the artist, the audience, and the work itself. Finally, I examine the social media application Vine as an emergent medium for creative expression. Through this short-lived form of networked technology, young people of color cultivated a digital community for emotional uplift and the creation of an alternative archive of daily life in resistance to the affective pressure of larger-scale structural forces. Thus, I aim to demonstrate that art experiences are meaning-generating, reciprocal exchanges between diverse agencies, and thus a powerful and flexible medium for the assertion of
counter-
narratives and expressions of agency.

▼ In the more than 150 years since the end of the Civil War, Emancipation Proclamation, and 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution that formally brought an end to chattel slavery, people in the United States have done much to downplay, sanitize, and outright forget both the history of slavery—despite its foundational role in the establishment of the U.S. political economy—and the life-altering damage that powerful white men, predominantly, inflicted upon millions of Africans and African Americans through a brutal system that lasted more than 200 years. Contributing to the process of whitewashing the histories and geographies of slavery have been the large absences of many academic disciplines to engage in critical research on chattel slavery until relatively recently. Since the 1960s, geographers have increasingly grappled with the discipline’s racist and imperialist past, engaging in “critical” studies that have advanced the discipline and added emphases on social justice, drawing upon diverse social theories such as Marxism, feminism, Critical Race Theory, and postmodernism. This dissertation builds upon this scholarship in developing a critical historical geographic understanding of slavery and its legacy in the U.S., paying particular attention to the “Deep South” states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. In the case of researching slavery, this dissertation argues that the ways in which people in the contemporary South (mis)remember the United States’ history are serious reflections on how contemporary issues of racism and white privilege operate in America. Taking a critical approach to historical geographic research of slavery is not merely an academic process but is inherently political. The dissertation engages with critical historical geographies of slavery by focusing primarily on counter narratives of slavery—“counter” in the sense that they stand in opposition to and correct whitewashed, dominant narratives that purport slavery was a mostly benign, patriarchal system. Further, it examines social and economic relations that operate to perpetuate these mythic perceptions of the United States’ chattel slavery system. The overarching goal of the dissertation is to study the processes through which people form, operationalize, and can advance counter narratives of slavery.

▼ This study discusses the history, tenets, and evolution of Critical Race Theory (CRT), and how the theory can be developed for use in a mediated context and a Chinese context. This paper employs Lou Jing???s (a mixed-race reality show contestant in China) story as a case study while reflecting upon the role that China???s history, socio-economic influences, and politics have played in shaping the country???s contemporary outlook on racial identities and racism. The analysis shows that most CRT tenets have a multitude of uses in exploring race, racism, classism, and European and U.S. influence in Chinese society, and how power is manipulated by the government in China???s media outlets.

▼ A holistic approach to Counter Violent Extremism (CVE) in the Internet Environment and Social Media is essential. This thesis focuses on gender and context consideration in online approaches to CVE through use of a literature review and samples of online counter-narrative campaigns. This has led to determination of the extent to which gender and context have been considered in online approaches to CVE and identifying what they mean for CVE online, while highlighting full participation of women in online approaches that are aimed at countering violent extremism as well as the critical role of contextual factors in online approaches to CVE. In addition, the thesis shows that more research is needed to fill the gaps identified. These gaps are the role of women in online CVE campaigns as well as contextual factors that are associated to violent extremism. More so, online narratives should be all rounded since this study found that CVE narratives have failed to identify a predictable psychosocial trajectory to explain de-radicalization processes that are crucial to disengage radicals.

▼ Ever since the start of the war on terror, governments worldwide have struggled with
countering the
narratives that are spread by violent extremist organisations. Recent academic research has produced several prescriptions that indicate what aspects potentially successful
counter-narrative, alternative narrative and government strategic communications programmes need to possess. Testing the scholarly recommendations on target audience, message, messenger and medium to the actual policies of Malaysia and Indonesia, it becomes apparent that the policies of both states are partially congruent with the dominant ideas in the literature. However, what both Malaysia and Indonesia lack is a clear delineation of target audiences based on level of radicalisation, the provision of alternative things to do to complement their alternative narrative programmes and a comprehensive strategy to combine online and offline measures to achieve the most sustainable effect. Still, when comparing the respective policies of the two states, it must be noted that Malaysia is more congruent with the scholarly prescriptions than Indonesia. The most important differences between the two states are that the Malaysian authorities showcase a more sophisticated awareness and application of the relevant academic definitions and take a rather comprehensive approach to providing government strategic communications, the latter of which is practically lacking in the case of Indonesia.

▼ The purpose of this dissertation study is to
understand the perspectives and experiences of African American
students in the Apex Program, an academic program for students
between the ages of 17 and 20 who have been identified as "overage
and undercredited" (OAUC). Informed by a critical sociocultural
framework, this study combines phenomenology's focus on the essence
of participants' experiences with the participatory and advocacy
orientation of action research. Using a grounded theory analytic
framework, this dissertation analyzes participant observations,
phenomenological interviews, focus groups, identity maps, and
textual artifacts to explore both what OAUC African American
students have experienced in educational settings and how they have
experienced it (Moustakas, 1994). More specifically, this study is
guided by the following research questions: How do African American
students at Apex – students who have been identified as OAUC – make
sense of their academic trajectories? And, what are the
implications for their identity negotiation processes? Through its
participatory approach, this study views student participants as
co-researchers in the process of data collection and analysis. Data
analysis reveals the contextual stressors that students identified
as having contributed, in some form, to their OAUC status and the
ensuing toll that these stressors have taken on their lives. The
analysis also reveals themes related to students' overlooked needs
and the coping strategies that they relied upon to address those
needs – strategies which became so embedded in their daily lives
that they became avenues for their identity formation. Lastly, the
analysis reveals themes related to the best practices at the Apex
Program, such as: (1) the importance of making room for students so
that they have access to adequate physical, cognitive, and
emotional space; (2) the role of a community-based model that
prepares students for full community participation; and (3) the
power of love to bring about internal and interpersonal change.
These findings inform research on the opportunity gap, theoretical
perspectives on hybridity and "third space," and policy and
practice surrounding school funding, school safety, curriculum,
teacher training, student voice, and the power of love as a guiding
measure for academic success.

▼ The history of the Saya San Rebellion (1930 – 1932), Burma's largest anti-colonial uprising, has remained factually intact for the last seventy years. Scholars have uniformly accepted the historical narrative as being accurate and have subsequently concentrated on interpreting the rebellion and the role of Saya San within a variety of religious, political, and economic frameworks. This study tests the cohesiveness of the narrative by re-examining the primary sources most closely connected with its construction. Tracing the origin of the narrative back to the trial of Saya San, it is argued that the legal evidence did not establish beyond a reasonable (historical) doubt that Saya San organized and led the rebellion in an effort to restore the Burmese monarchy. An examination of the Special Rebellion Tribunal's jurisdiction reveals that
counter-insurgency legislation not only determined the way in which evidence would be admitted into the record, but it directly prescribed how the resulting narrative would be documented and presented in the archive. This project proposes that the criminalization of Burmese ritual, kingship, and geography played a central role in securing the passage of this legislation while providing a Rebel motif to which Saya San was attached. Finally, this study suggests that the uncertainty surrounding Burma's administrative separation from India contributed to British characterizations of the Saya San Rebellion.

▼ Black gay male identities and their place within the social hierarchy are organized by interlocking systems of race, sexuality, gender and class. This produces the social marginality of black gay men in seemingly neutral ways. Prominent features of this systemic oppression are stock stories of black gay life that construct black gay men as pathological, dangerous, conflicted, inauthentically black, emasculated, and heretical within public and academic discourses. In order to better understand these dynamics and add to the empirical literature on race/sexuality intersections, fifty-two men identifying themselves as black/African American and as having relationships with other men, participated in semi-structured one-on-one interviews which explored their accounts of the structural arrangements, social interactions, and cultural meaning systems that defined the experience of being both black and gay in America. These interviews revealed that black gay men construct rich and complex
counter narratives which not only expose the complex structural arrangements, cultural practices and racial ideologies that produce their marginality, but also remediate black gay manhood as part of the black diaspora. These narrative challenges illuminated discursive, performative and cultural practices, as well as social interactions occurring in three areas of the men‘s lives. First, were strategic uses of a hegemonic masculine form I call the "Super Black Man" (SBM) by which the men counteract the heteronormative, and hypermasculine prerequisites of respectable black masculinity, and represent themselves as racially-conscious and respectable black men. Participants also constructed narrative challenges to those cultural repertoires produced by the black church which organize the dominant scripts of black, Christian identity. These accounts were distinguished by the academic resources they utilized to re-theorize the relationship between Christian faith and the black body, confront the white racial framing and heteronormative assumptions embedded in church doctrine, and transform their outsider status within these communities. Finally participants‘
narratives also illustrate multiple dimensions by which a black racial framing organizes their experiences as black gay men, and their connection to black communities. These negotiations suggest the need to theorize race/sexuality intersections as having both structural and interpretative dimensions and to see the intersection of race and culture as complicating the manifestation of racial inequality.

▼ Over 150 years since the abolition of slavery, African
Americans still lack equal access to education and other quality of
life markers. However, a slow increase in African American students
pursuing and obtaining higher education demonstrates the progress
of African American academic success. Although still not at an
equitable level, this progress, and the voices of success are often
muted by the majoritarian narrative of African American student
failure. This research focuses on African American student success
and examines the specific socio-cultural characteristics and
processes that shape the ways in which African American students
develop their own counter-narratives to persist and gain access to
higher education. This study utilizes narrative inquiry in the form
of interviews, artifacts collection and student-drawn identity maps
to understand the factors that influence the development of
counter-narratives. The primary research questions included: What
narratives did African American students tell themselves to help
them persist in school, attain a high school diploma and pursue
higher education? How did they develop their narratives? How did
their narratives influence their educational experiences? Five
African American students who attended an elite public university
in the southwest United States participated in four to five
interviews ranging from six to ten hours in total. Through the
analysis of their stories, the importance of culture and context
were clear. Specifically their social support systems including
their parents, siblings, teachers and mentors, significantly
influenced their identity development and human agency. The
findings also point to a critical path forward: if society commits
to supporting African American student success, then shine a light
on stories of persistence and potential rather than shortcomings
and failures.

produções originais Netflix: o documentário Amanda Knox (2016), a
série documental Making a Murderer (2015) e a série baseada em
fatos reais Alias Grace (2017).
essas emoções representariam as angústias do indivíduo
atual?
[en] The mystery surrounding crime can be seen in
literature through police novels, which had their advent with
newspaper serials in the 19th century. Currently, narratives about
real crimes are successful on screens. If finding the culprit with
the purpose to restore order was the focus in the past, in
contemporary criminal narratives the doubt about the guilt of the
protagonists accused of murder is accentuated at the expense of the
crime itself. In the present dissertation, we seek to identify the
emotions stirred up by three original Netflix productions based on
real cases of murder crimes: the documentary Amanda Knox (2016),
the documentary series Making a Murderer (2015) and the series
Alias Grace (2017). We start by pondering on Netflix s role as 21st
century technology when producing content for its streaming
platform and when sharing opinions and emotions on its social
networks, therefore making a game of screens with the viewer/user.
Both Netflix and contemporary criminal narratives have been
guidelines for studies in the field of communication considering
engagement with the public. Here, we intend to think about the
criminal narrative in its origin in order to understand its
variations in the stories unfolded by Netflix, and the emotions of
the protagonists that can bring about judgment by creating the
viewer s involvement with the drama. The question remains: do these
emotions represent the anxieties of the current
individual?

[en] The theme of this thesis is love, studied as one
among the passions, and broached by Vieira with propriety in his
sermons. Vieira follows the Aristotelian- Thomist ideas, believing
that passion is good, once it is ruled by reason. The preacher
discourses about remedies for love, about self-awareness as means
to perceive love, about the contraposition between divine and human
love, highlighting question of fine love, recognized by the
confrontation between the fineness of the two loves; about the
loving agreement, aiming to offer a definition of loving-feeling.
The preacher associates these questions, in the quest of
emphasizing that love is the linking tool between God and man, and
that the latter is not an autonomous being, considering that his
existence is firmly set on a loving relationship between man and
Christ. To Vieira, self- knowledge depends on the admittance, by
man, of his fragility and his dependence upon God.

▼ While dominant national P-20
narratives circulate a discourse of the near achievement of racial equity post Brown v. Board of Education, there remains a large gap between the experiences of people of color and the official record of their inclusion and access. Organizational self-analysis of racial disparities in education often attribute undeniable discrimination to the micro-level performances of individuals; claiming micro-aggressions, lack of training, political/personal conflict, or ignorance. When these reasons cannot fully explain gross inequity; organizations turn to society's socio-economic disparities and mirrored racial realities within the country as instructive on the inevitable realities of racism within schools.
A critically missing piece in the binary of this micro/macro analysis is the role of accountability that the culture of organizations have in reprising and maintaining structural elements of discrimination that make certain an outcome of inequality in education. This
counter narrative argues that the nature of race based and other institutional discriminations has changed. Now covert, culturally normalized and widely sanctioned, these forms of institutionalized oppressions through its invisible form, have gained propulsion. It's largely undisrupted ascendancy within institutional life hides in the shadows of culture, actively works to deny marginalized people's full expression of their humanity, and work's against their actualization of freedom.
Working to make visible the ethereal constitution of institutional covert discrimination; the voice of this study through literary device attends to the intimate nature of this closed dialogic space, effectively opening up spaces for silenced stories that serve to intimately and graphically expose this phenomenon.
This research conducts itself as critical indigenous inquiry. Epistemologically working from an Afro-Mexican diasporic position; the author/participant asks readers to make metaphorical leaps from the experience of the individual to a more scopic experience of oppressed people. Piercing the veil of whiteness and more traditional to African relational ways of knowing; story is used to ground the reader in the everyday experiences of witnesses who testify to the existence, operation and effect of institutional covert discrimination while strategically integrating instructive theories operating sub- textually.
This work draws on P-20 education as a historically and contemporarily important location to phenomenologically interrogate institutional covert discrimination (ICD). Its broader claim is that ICD is not solely germane to education; rather it is a disease afflicting large sectors of organizational life.

▼ [pt] Esta tese pretende investigar a construção das
narrativas à deriva na escritura do roteiro cinematográfico
ficcional brasileiro, observando desde a concepção artística do
cinematográficos: Viajo porque preciso, volto porque te amo (2010),
de Marcelo Gomes e Karim Ainouz; Abismo Prateado (2011), de Karim
Aïnouz; Castanha (2014), de Davi Pretto; O Homem das Multidões

[en] This thesis intends to investigate the
construction of the narratives adrift in the screenplay of the
Brazilian fictional cinematographic screenplay, observing from the
artistic conception of the screenwriter, often influenced by the
literary narrative until the artistic execution of the conditioned
direction not infrequently by practices of the real, for
documentary and / or performative procedures. In the last decade,
the theme of drift permeates Brazilian cinematography by printing
variations and specific characteristics to the fictional narrative
and to the audiovisual creative process. From one narrative to the
next, from one fable to the next, we have the reconfiguration of
drift in the fictional universe that goes from wandering to
immobility: characters begin in continuous displacement, but
gradually they alternate ambulation and closure, physical
perambulation, and existential closure. In order to reflect on the
process of audiovisual writing and its direct interference in the
construction of such narratives, the screenplay is placed as the
central focus of the research. The thesis focused on works with
different creative processes both in terms of writing composition
and the filmmaking process. Five cinematographic screenplays are
analyzed here: I Travel Because I Have to, I Come Back Because I
Love You (2010), by Marcelo Gomes and Karim Ainouz; The Silver
Cliff (2011), by Karim Aïnouz; Castanha (2014), by David Pretto;

The cryptographic blocks used in the integrated circuits implement algorithms proved robust against cryptanalysis. However, malicious manipulation against the circuit itself can retrieve the secret data. Among known hardware attacks, attacks called "fault attacks" are proved particularly effective. Their principle is to inject a fault in the circuit (using for example a laser beam) that will produce an erroneous result and to compare it with a correct result. Therefore, it is essential to detect these errors during the circuit running. The work presented in this thesis concerns the concurrent detection of errors in cryptographic circuits, using as support the implementation of the Advanced Encryption Standard "AES". Thus, we analyze several error detection schemes based on the redundancy of information (detector code). We present a solution using dual code of parity to improve the rate of error detection in these circuits. We also present a study showing that the choice of the type of the detector code depends on one hand on the type of error that can be produced and be used by an attacker. On the other hand, it depends on type of the circuit implementation that we want to…

A Perspectiva Sociointeracional
perpassa toda a conversa, e resistir a ela. A análise do encontro
negritudes e oprimem a pessoa negra. Além disso, o estudo do
Desta forma,
distribuem discursos alternativos, com valores e crenças adequados
às identidades sociais que pretendem performar.
[en] The present research aims to deepen the knowledge
and social reflections regarding the resistance to stigmatization
of religious practices of african matrix, from the
narrative-interactive microanalysis of an interview between two
people engaged in these practices. Sociointeractional Perspective
of Discourse and Narrative Analysis ground the work, which is
qualitative-interpretativist, with ethnographic inspiration. During
the interview, the participants co-create a central narrative,
whose content is the life story of the interviewee, based on small
narrative episodes embedded, related to the religious context in
which they are inserted. The interlocutors need to handle the
tension of the stigma of religious practices of african matrix,
that permeate all conversation, and they also have to resist it.
The analysis of the social encounter suggests a link between this
stigmatization and the racist macrodiscourses, which devalue
blacknesses and oppress black people. In addition, the study of the
interactional context points out that other stigmas, such as
religion and social class, contribute to labeling religious
practices of african matrix as deviant. The interlocutors resort to
reflexivity in the act of narrating, which fulfills the function of
resisting the derogatory stereotypes (savagery, wickedness,
primitivism, ignorance) to which religious practices of african
matrix have been related in common sense. as well as counteracting
it to the…

desestabilizar, ressignificar e subverter tais discursos
limitadores.
ideológicos normatizantes e estigmatizantes (MOITA LOPES, 2008;
THREADGOLD, 2005).
online Pegging 101, três temas principais surgiram: (1) as
e a masculinidade hegemônica.

[en] The thesis seeks to explain the meaning and the
process through which the new coalition of developing countries,
the G-20, was formed, in the preparatory phase of the negotiations
to be held at Cancun Ministerial Conference of WTO (2003). The work
analyses the role of this developing country coalition throughout
the negotiations of the Doha Development Agenda from the
perspective of the revival of the North-South dialogue and its
implications for the influence of new emerging markets over the
multilateral trade arena. Concentrating our focus on the
negotiating process of the new institution, We argue that path
dependency processes help to explain the dilemmas faced by the G-20
in striving for keeping its cohesion around the defense of Doha
Mandate, centered in its right of development. Despite the fact
that developing countries found themselves at the center of the
negotiating proccess and entitled to exhert a higher influence on
the progress of the negotiations, its defense of the legitimacy of
the Doha mandate was increasingly put to test before the fragility
of its cohesion when the negotiating proccess turned to the
substance of a concrete agreement.

▼ [pt] Este trabalho propõe analisar o discurso do
temporariamente do convívio social.
[en] This work intends to analize the discourse of a
convict, aiming to examine how are performed resistance practices
against the system which has temporarily deprived him of social
interaction. The idea of resistance identity is adopted in this
study as the one built by actors who find themselves in stigmatized
and devalued social positions caused by a process of domination
(Castells, 1999; Bourdieu, 1998; Bauman, 2001), or by actors which
oppose someone or something because of particular perceptions of
themselves or of others (Ewick e Silbey, 2003). The interviews for
data generation were given by inmates in a prison in Rio de Janeiro
City. Based on Interactional Sociolinguistics principles, this work
prioritizes the narrative analysis of a prisoner, João, using the
criteria for analysis developed by Labov (1972) associated with the
narrative studies of life stories presented by Linde (1993) and
narratives of resistance by Ewick and Silbey (2003). The data
analysis shows that João’s discourse may be considered as a
discouse of resistance, specifically resistance to identity of a
criminal (socially essentialized). João uses general terms and
gives emphasis to the agency of others in his histories, minimizing
the impact noticed by his interlocutors for criminal acts
described. Therefore, João considers the regular cases of
adversity, injustice and restriction,…

construída a prática do jornalismo cidadão do tipo incriminativo.

phones and the easiness with which images can be shared through the
parallel world of the web have favored ordinary citizens to video
and share amateur films denouncing law enforcement practices. This
contemporary phenomenon shows not only what has been characterized
as a society of spectacle and surveillance, but also what is
understood nowadays as citizen journalism. In the light of the
speech in interaction studies and from the contribution of the
Social Sciences and Social Communication we have tried to examine
how these situations in which cellular phones are used as counter
surveillance weapons are constructed by interaction. The corpus of
this research is comprised by an amateur video that records police
officers in action in a slum that has a Pacifying Police Unit (UPP)
in Rio de Janeiro. The video records a conflict after the approach
made by police officers and all of the participants present in the
scene are aware of the recording. It was shared on YouTube, which
is currently the world s largest video sharing platform. This case
study shows the relationship between control and pleasure, woven in
the making and distribution of these images. It also shows how
incriminating citizen journalism is practiced. The…

A dissertação analisa as
produzindo anti-cidade.

production dynamics that emerge from the peripheries, from
precarious urban areas, located in Hills, Slums, Villages and
Tenements. The present research resumes the efforts of recognition
and visibility of these productions, having as their field of study
the Museu da Maré and its direct relationship with memory
production processes, in different situations and with different
social actors, involved in the struggle for the permanence and
dynamization of the museal culture in the set of favelas in Tide.
The dissertation analyzes the strategies and dynamics of local
social movements, through the role of their organic intellectuals,
the community leaders who founded one of the first favela museums
in the world, in 2006. The Museum of Maré is part of the effort of
social museology in questioning traditional museology, giving voice
to those who have always been deprived of leading their own
stories. His museum project summarizes the socio-historical process
of producing the urban space of Maré in 12 stages, by describing
the daily lives of its residents. Through participant observation
and semi-structured interviews, the present work penetrates the
poetics of construction and consolidation of collective, insurgent
and counter hegemonic memory in Maré. The fieldwork accompanied the
set of activities promoted by the Museum, which reveals an
organizational praxis of local memory, in contrast to the…

This dissertation addresses the issue of development of the concept of space in psychoanalysis taking as central the clinical case of a patient treated at a public mental health clinic in the city of Porto Alegre. Given that time/space are inseparable categories in the field of human sciences, the research addresses the moments of the development of the subject in which the organization and structuring of these variables are concerned. Emphasizing the concept of space as an effect of the position of the subject in language, the text develops the relationship between perception and representation present in delusional formations. From clinical experience, it intends to discuss some important theoretical formulations in the field of psychoanalysis while composing a case study. It uses the literary work of the American writer Paul Auster "Oracle Night" as a privileged element in this dialogue as a representation of the structure present in the narrative. The relationships established between reader/writer /character composes a narrative universe similar to the transfer in clinical psychosis. From these elements it addresses the issue of the differences between fiction and delusion with regard to the narrative configuration.
