▼ The problem of domestic violence is wide-spread and has continued over many years. It occurs in women of all racial backgrounds and social economic group. Pregnant women have not been spared from domestic violence. Physical violence in pregnancy has been associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Unfortunately, no research had been conducted in Zambia, hence this study.The purpose of this study was to determine the Prevalence and Factors Contributing to Domestic Violence Against Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Clinics in Lusaka Urban.A Cross Sectional Descriptive Study was conducted. 385 pregnant women were interviewed using a scheduled questionnaire. The respondents were systematically selected from 6 different health centers which where randomly selected. 1 in every 5 pregnant women seen was selected. To complement data from the survey, two focus group discussions (comprising 12 pregnant women each) were conducted. The results revealed that out of 385 respondents, 169 (44.0 percent) had ever experienced domestic violence. Meanwhile 92 (23.9 percent) out of 384 respondents experienced domestic violence in their current pregnancy. The common forms of domestic violence were beatings 116 (68.6 percent), followed by insults 55 (32.7 percent) and sexual abuse/non consensual sex 18 (10.7 percent). The main perpetrator of domestic violence was the husband/intimate partner 165(98.7 percent).The majority 37 (40.2 percent) of the respondents who experienced domestic violence were in the age group 21-25 years, came from high density areas 229 (59.5 percent), were Nyanja speaking people 143 (37.5 percent), married 338 (87.8 percent), and belonged to Liberal Protestant Denominations 155 (40.5 percent). With regard to educational level, most 37 (10.2 percent) of the respondents who experienced domestic violence had secondary education. In relation to occupation, 53 (62.7 percent) of the respondents that were employed experienced domestic violence in their current pregnancy, compared with 172 (65.9 percent) who did not experience domestic violence. There was however, no association between domestic violence and age, residential area, tribe, religion, marital status, educational level and occupation.The study also revealed that 283 (73.7 percent) of the respondents believed that a wife was justified to refuse to have sex with her husband compared with 101 (26.3 percent) who said that she was not justified. 139 (36.4 percent) respondents believed that a man was justified to beat his wife, while 243 (63.3 percent) did not. Although there was no association found between initiation ceremony in general and domestic violence, some issues that were taught during this ceremony were found to be associated with domestic violence. Being taught not to reveal domestic violence to outsiders was associated with domestic violence. This dissertation explores people's perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes towards intimate partner violence in Bangladesh. Despite the importance of people's perceptions behind the prevalence of violence against women, no Bangladeshi study has explored further the factors that shape people's perceptions and beliefs. Moreover, far less is known about urban intimate partners outside rural marital relationships. This study utilizes a survey instrument to collect data from Bangladeshi urban college students (n = 331) and a small group of professionals (n = 99). Of those participants who were in a relationship (n = 313), a majority (73 percent) reported being in a dating relationship and the rest in a marital relationship. Thus, in addition to participants' perceptions of partner violence, the researcher collected data on the prevalence of violence in their relationships. The main factors analyzed in association with people's perceptions and their experiences of intimate partner violence are: gender, age, education, relationship status, profession, and having abusive male friends. Overall, participants' perceptions of partner violence were poor. Out of 430 participants, 191 refused to provide any information on their perceptions about what actions are considered abusive or which relationships experience violence. Another 120 said they "do not know" about intimate partner violence. A good percentage of participants perceived various forms of abuse (especially if perpetrated by men) as "proper." For example, between 20 and 30 percent of the participants thought destroying partner's belongings, threatening to stop financial support, restricting movement, and stalking are "proper" if perpetrated by men. When examined further, male participants (35 percent) were more likely to perceive stalking as appropriate compared to females (22 percent). Professionals and those with more education (between 16 and 18 percent) were less likely to perceive stalking as "proper" compared to students and those with less education (35 percent). In addition to their lack of perceptions about partner violence, the participants held strong patriarchal beliefs and attitudes: between 45 and 55 percent of participants believed that men have ultimate power to control women; 20 percent believed that women who are raped are partly to blame, and 14 percent thought that a man has the right to force his partner to have sex. Once again, the male, young, less educated, and student participants were more likely to uphold patriarchal beliefs and attitudes. Given the lack of perceptions among participants about partner violence and their strong patriarchal beliefs and attitudes, high levels of violence within participants' own relationships were expected (supported by literature). Domestic violence has a serious impact on women's health and their children not only in Cambodia but also in the world. Limited research is available on this topic in Cambodia. Guiding theories for this study are implicit theory on domestic violence and help-seeking theoretical model for women who are victims of violence from their husbands and/or partners. In accordance with these theories, help-seeking among married women who experienced domestic violence may be related to further abuse and severity from their husbands/partners. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation aims to evaluate associations between help-seeking and re-abuse as well as severity of domestic violence against married women in Cambodia. The present study used both quantitative and qualitative methods for the analysis. Data for quantitative method came from the 2005 Demographic Health and Survey among married women in Cambodia. Data for qualitative method came from the interviews with seven governmental and non-governmental organizations working on domestic violence in Cambodia. This study used statistical software SAS version 9.3 to perform data analysis. The analysis included a total number of 2294 married women by calculating frequencies, percentages, and correlations of all variables. To evaluate the associations between help-seeking and re-abuse/severity of violence, the study used Multiple Logistic Regression to compute odds ratios and its corresponding p-values. This study found a statistically significant association between help-seeking and re-abuse with an odds ratio of 1.57 (p=0.04). Help-seeking also significantly associated with severity of violence with an odds ratio of 2.35 (p<0.001). Moreover, the association between re-abuse and severity of violence was significant with an odds ratio of 5.41 (p<0.0001). Qualitative interviews with other stakeholders working on domestic violence in Cambodia confirmed that help-seeking is also a risk factor for abused women to get further and more severe violence from husbands. In conclusion, help-seeking is a significant predictor for re-abuse and severity of violence among Cambodian married women who experienced domestic violence. Re-abuse is also a significant predictor for severity of violence.

▼ Domestic tourism is the cornerstone of economic development processes in Durban, which is the centre of attraction in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, however there was a decline in domestic tourism between 2009 and 2014. This study was conducted to determine whether domestic marketing is effective enough to attract domestic tourists to travel to Durban, as well as to determine if there could be other factors that are contributing to the decline in domestic tourism. The literature shows that the government and tourism bodies are mostly focusing on developing and promoting international tourism instead of domestic tourism due to their high spending patterns. The purpose of the study was to identify challenges of promoting domestic tourism in Durban and establish the role of Durban Tourism and their contribution to domestic tourism development and marketing. Tourism promotion is the key strategy for the success of a destination, which can result in community development, economic empowerment and poverty alleviation. Durban Tourism, as the marketing body for Durban, has a responsibility to develop and promote Durban locally and internationally. The aim of the study was to determine the challenges of promoting domestic tourism in Durban. This was a qualitative study where purposive sampling was used. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 Durban Tourism employees in the marketing, tourism services and research departments, and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. The key findings of the study indicate that the perception of a high crime rate in Durban, inadequate domestic tourism promotion within provinces, and the high rate of unemployment in South Africa, are the major challenges that hinder the growth of domestic tourism. The implication is that Durban Tourism needs to invest more effort into marketing the city more efficiently to domestic tourists, because they are reliable throughout the year. ▼ This dissertation is about the increasing technologization of domestic spaces and the implications for human-technology sociality that are ‘built-into’ ICT-enabled domestic spaces and technologies. Its central focus is the socio-cultural development of the networked home in terms of convergences of and between humans and technologies throughout the twentieth century. The dissertation considers electricity, automobility, and the informationalization of domestic spaces as necessary conditions for the emergence of the contemporary networked home. Acknowledging the broader context of changes in capitalism, the dissertation focuses upon sociotechnical change represented within ordinary and popular visions of domestic spaces that circulated in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. To this end, it traces the long history of the networked home between 1906 and 2006 in two mass circulation magazines (and in appliance and home industry research materials between 1993 and 2008), and analyzes the advertisements, advice columns, and research reports contained therein. A framework drawn from social studies of technology, theories of the network society, and of consumption is used to address several broad questions: What are the implications of the scripted, built-in, and assumed characteristics of the relationships between humans and technologies in domestic spaces? What do these mean for the ways in which domestic spaces are configured? What lessons for the future of sociality between and among humans and technologies in and around domestic spaces might be taken from prior configurations? The hybrid sociality that is created by combinations of ICTs, domestic spaces and appliances, and human users relies upon ‘built-in’ scripts to function, layers of which – including the competences, skill sets, and preferred uses – become sedimented and help to facilitate the introduction, normalization, and domestication of novel technologies. By understanding how these built-in scripts have worked in technologized homes since 1906, this dissertation is an important step toward a sociological account of the next emerging trend in domestic technologies: those concerned with environmental sustainability.

▼ This study has investigated the sustainability of Zambia’s domestic debt (mainly composed of Government securities). Most of Zambia’s external debt has been forgiven and donors have put in place measures to avoid a repeat of an accumulation of an unsustainable external debt stock. Zambia’s current macro-economic environment is condusive for domestic borrowing (stable inflation, an open economy, relatively stable exchange rate, etc.). This scenario has threatened the sustainability of domestic debt. Government has in the recent past shifted its financing of deficits and projects from external to domestic and specifically through Government securities. Further, demand for Government securities has increased both from local and foreign investors owing to the price and financial system stability prevailing in the economy. The initial analysis of domestic debt sustainability(DDSA) has been done via rules of thumb ratios. These ratios reveal first warning signs as regards DDSA. Sustainability has been measured using the concept of the Present Value Budget Constraint (PVBC) which relies on the empirical strategy of cointegration; cointegration between revenues and expenditures is a necessary condition for debt sustainability, given that both variables of integrated of the same order. The analysis is performed with total revenue (with grants) and also with domestic revenue (without grants). The data was collected from the Bank of Zambia, Ministry of Finance and National Planning and the Central Statistical Office, spanning from 1980 to 2010. Both expenditure with revenue plus grants and expenditure with only domestic revenue were analysed using E-views' Johansen's cointegration test to test for sustainability.Results suggest that Zambia's domestic debt is sustainable whether revenue includes grants or not. This is after cancellation of most of the external debt, relieving the pressures of external debt service. In addition, revenue has been boosted by the high copper prices and GDP has been consistently growing at over 5% for the past 7 years. This scenario has been reducing reliance on cooperating partner budget support. Nevertheless, the sustainability of Zambia's domestic debt is still threatened by its dependency on exports of raw copper as the major source of revenue. There is need to quickly diversify the economy, to widen the tax base and also to build a substantial fund to hedge against oil price shocks while at the same time, shifting towards renewable energy sources to reduce dependency on oil.

▼ This research seeks to place Situationist theory into a domestic context through a critical reading of Guy Debord and the Internationale Situationnistes’ writings. Challenging the notion of a domesticated architecture, Situationist techniques and strategies are used to test new ground in the interpretation of a domestic situation. Two techniques explored are the dérive and détournement. In Guy Debord’s Theory of Dérive, the dérive is described as "a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiences (Knabb 52)." This technique was used by the Situationists as a way of experiencing a city through the possibilities provided by the "terrain and the encounters they find there (52)." Adding to this definition, Jonathan Hill in Actions of Architecture describes the dérive as "confront[ing] the habitual and functional experience of the city (Hill 67). Détournement, described by the Situationists as 'the re-use of pre-existing artistic elements in a new ensemble (Knabb 67)." is a way of constructing new meanings and expressions for previously defined elements. In A User’s Guide to Détournement, Debord outlines several 'laws' defining the use of détournement as ways of creating situations, which he explains is 'the ultimate goal of all our activity (16)." To dérive in the domestic suggests possibilities of a continual exploration of the spaces within the home. Traditional notions of the home’s function and meaning are reconfigured in order to construct new situations; how do the spaces within a home contribute or hinder these explorations? What role does each room play within the domestic as a whole, and what are their relationships to each other as individual spaces? Détournement links in closely with the exploration of spaces within the domestic. Using it as a way of challenging the traditional functions of both the spaces themselves, and the artefacts contained within [the artefacts being the markers of function in most cases], what are the implications of this misappropriation of artefacts and space? Will these interpretations bring a greater understanding of the artefacts and spaces themselves, as well as create new meanings? The contextual critique of the domestic through a critical reading of the Situationists’ theories will deepen the possibilities of how the domestic is understood. This understanding is visualised through a reworking of an existing domestic framework, a New Zealand state house. Architectural interventions are used to create new modes of inhabitation that modify behaviour and habitual living within the domestic. Here, the role of the artefact and space within the domestic is challenged and altered to create new manifestations. Advisors/Committee Members: Wood, Peter.

▼ Immigrants affect the United States in various ways. There are a wide variety of demographic, social, economic, and fiscal effects. Although the direct effects of immigrants on the economy are small, their indirect effects are considerable. Immigrants are geographically concentrated, but their effects are distributed through migration and the economy, even to areas where there are few immigrants. One of the best ways to explore the immigrant effect is through the study of migration. Migration reflects immigrants’ effect, both directly and indirectly, through the labor and housing markets. The effect of immigrants on inter-state migration is the main topic of this dissertation. ❧ Migration is a complex phenomenon with many determinants. There are different reasons for in-migration and out-migration. Most migration studies are focused on in-migration that is studied after the moves are completed. Out-migration can yield additional information. A separate analysis of in-migration and out-migration can provide more precise and complete results of migration. The primary reason for inter-state migration is job-related. Economic opportunities in each state are the most important determinant of migration. However, the determinants of migration vary at different stages in the economic cycle. The year 2006 is an example of a booming economy while the year 2008 represents an economic recession. These are good years to show the different determinants of migration over the economic cycle. The new American Community Survey is utilized that provides rich local data that was not available in previous economic cycles. Native-born and foreign-born population exhibits different responses to state characteristics in the determination of migration. The native-born are more sensitive to economic conditions than foreign-born. In addition, state level characteristics and local level characteristics have different effects on migration. Inter-state migrants choose not only a new state but also the residential area where they will live. Comparing the effects of state level characteristics and local level characteristics are important in understanding migration. ❧ Data availability is a crucial factor in most empirical studies. Most migration studies have analyzed five-year migration due to that variable’s availability in the census, but five-year migration is no longer a question in the census. A new one-year migration question provided by the American Community Survey (ACS) is the major source of data for migration analysis. This change could cause a discontinuity in a long line of migration studies. This study tests for differences in behavior recorded by one-year and five-year migration questions. ❧ Space is an important concept in migration studies but has been given less attention in migration studies. Ignoring space is a cause of bias in the estimated effects. ▼ Saudi Arabia is the world's leading oil producer and exporter. The economy in the country is almost totally dependent on oil. Tourism is one of the sectors which received more attention in the last few years after the establishment of the High Commission for Tourism and Antiques in 2000. The Commission's main purpose is to develop, promote and enhance the tourism sector, particularly the domestic tourism sector, to be one of the important sectors in economy. The main purpose of this research is to identify motivations and values for Saudi citizens to travel domestically and to measure their satisfaction on the services they are provided with when they travel within the country. Maslow's Motives Modal (1998) and Rokeach Value Survey (1973) are applied in the study. Motivations are examined by understanding the 'push' and 'pull' factors and these concepts have been used in many studies. The idea behind these concepts is that people travel because they are pushed by their own internal forces and pulled by external forces of the destination attributes. The study was conducted in the city of Medina and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and 140 questionnaires were obtained, 77 in Medina and 63 in Jeddah. Respondents were selected using a convenience sample through a snowball technique among females and families and a convenience and purposive sample among males at places such as coffee shops and restaurants. Obtained data were analyzed using SPSS. The findings indicated that there are eight push motivations for Saudi domestic tourists including (Relaxation, Spirituality, Family, Cultural, Activity, Knowledge, Loyalty and Economic) and five pull factors including (Religious, Safety, Entertainment, Luxury and Local culture). The study showed that the push factor of Relaxation and the pull factor of Religion are the most important factors as perceived by Saudis. It was also revealed that Saudi domestic tourists have high level of satisfaction on the services they are provided with when they travel domestically. The study suggested further research to be carried out across the Muslim and Arab world in order to explore more travel motivations and values dimensions for people in this region.

▼ Families have a basic need to stay connected to each other. When families are separated by distance, they turn to communication technologies to stay connected with loved ones. However, most technologies do not provide the same feelings of connectedness that one feels from seeing loved ones. This dissertation explored the design and use of video-based technologies to allow families to communicate and remain connected across distance. The first part of this dissertation explored familiesâ use of video mediated communication (VMC) systems and focused on determining design factors that are critical for its successful adoption. This research was conducted in three phases. Phase 1 explored familiesâ use of a current VMC system, namely video conferencing, to uncover how and why familiesâ use this technology to communicate with loved ones. An interview study led to findings about familiesâ communication practices using video conferencing systems. These included initiating communication using other technologies prior to engaging in a video call, and sharing activities in each otherâ s homes. Design recommendations that emerged from this study highlight the need for mechanisms in VMC systems that allow families to easily initiate communication and easily share everyday life. In Phase 2, design recommendations from Phase 1 were used to design and implement a dyadic VMC system with always-on video called the Family Window (FW). A field evaluation of the system uncovered a mix of practices, some similar to the use of video conferencing systems, for example to share activities, and some new practices that were made possible by the always-on video system. Design recommendations from this field evaluation highlight the importance of dedicated displays, mobility, and privacy controlling mechanisms. In Phase 3, design recommendations from the evaluation of the FW were used to design, implement, and evaluate a multifamily VMC system with called Family Portals. The second part of this dissertation describes the codification of familiesâ communication and awareness practices using VMC systems, into patterns and a pattern language. These communication and awareness practices were codified into Patterns of Practices that can be used as a design tool to design technologies for domestic communication and as a vocabulary to describe domestic communication practices. ▼ While men’s violence against wives and partners is universal and transhistorical, the various terms used to describe it have been, and remain mutable, constructed and contested. This thesis traces how men’s violence against wives or partners was once constructed as a private or domestic matter and how and why these constructions have changed over time; and what effects, if any, the changes might have had on the way the violence was responded to, and experienced by victims. The thesis is particularly concerned with state practices and how these impacted on women’s capacity to resist a husband’s or partner’s violence. The thesis begins with marriage in the medieval period because marriage and the family have been central to the concept of “domestic” as it emerged in Western society. The principal temporal focus of the thesis is the 1960s – 1984. The 1960s were a period marked by rapid social change that provided a foundation for the construction of “domestic violence” in the 1970s. The thesis ends in 1984, two years after the Domestic Protection Act which marked a radical shift in the construction of men’s violence against wives or partners from a private matter to a public one, and one year after the state began to fund places of refuge for women trying to escape violent partners. The central concern of this thesis is the operation of both dominant and resistant discourses that structured social practices in particular fields that affected women’s capacity to resist violence by a husband or partner. How men’s violence against wives or partners is constructed is crucial to social responses to it and women’s experience of it. Discourse analysis is especially suited to this project because it can reveal which discursive practices created and upheld particular forms of social life. Importantly, a discursive analysis can explain the difference between rhetoric and practice. Although the thesis is underpinned by a legislative trajectory which appears linear and progressive, the discourses which swirl around legislative measures are constantly evolving, sometimes in regressive and internally contradictory ways. Exploring the discursive field of men’s violence against wives or partners provides an understanding of historical actors and practices, and has a contemporary value. Current discourses of domestic violence are shaped by discursive practices that occurred in the period under study. Multiple contesting and contradictory discourses continue to undermine gains made by women in resisting domestic violence today.

▼ Primarily understood as a manifestation of violence against women and girls (VAWG), 'honour'-based violence (HBV) is the collective term for abuse that is perpetrated against victims because they are believed to have done something to bring shame upon their family or community. With antecedents in the forced marriage policy debates of the late-1990s, HBV has been a policy concern in Britain for almost two decades. Although now recognised as a 'topical and persistent issue' (Eshareturi et al., 2014: 369), discourse on HBV is characterised by a paucity of local and national-level data, little empirical research on the subject, and confusion around its conceptual framework. Compounding this are media and policy responses, which have consistently viewed HBV as something intrinsic to South Asian and Middle-Eastern Muslim communities. Failing to acknowledge that VAWG is a universal affliction, this 'lens of cultural essentialism' (Gill, 2014a: 1) creates racial tensions and anxieties by positioning HBV as the preserve of the 'other'. Whilst it is clear that all these issues present potential problems for service provision, very few studies have examined empirically what this means for practice. In seeking to strengthen knowledge in this area, the current research is an exploratory study into how professionals working in roles connected with domestic violence and abuse describe, explain, and respond to HBV. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 21 participants (11 third-sector employees, eight representatives from local authorities, one family lawyer and one former police officer), this research moves existing discussion beyond the conceptual realm to illuminate the everyday challenges and complexities that come with working in an area defined by contention and uncertainty. This thesis makes a number of recommendations for theory, policy and practice. It calls for more dynamic interpretations of HBV, which move beyond the patriarchy/culture discourses omnipresent in current literature to recognise how honour intersects with ideas of power and hierarchy. In terms of policy, the thesis argues that HBV cannot be effectively addressed within a framework of domestic violence and abuse. To this end, the thesis suggests that HBV needs to be reconceptualised as an overlapping, though separate, form of abuse. This way, the specific characteristics that make HBV complex, such as collective perpetration, can be made clear, instead of being obscured by a framework that is, in practice, designed to address abuse within the dyad. To help counter the harmful racialised stereotypes of HBV, this thesis recommends regular, rigorous and mandatory training for practitioners, particularly those working on the frontline. The thesis also advocates for a more holistic response to HBV, a key part of which involves working with families and communities to challenge not only the offending behaviour, but the norms and ideals that uphold and reproduce this. ▼ This study discusses the role of the community in preventing domestic violence in Chaisa Township, Lusaka Urban. The general objective of this study was to investigate the role of the community in preventing domestic violence. The specific objectives were: to investigate the prevalence of domestic violence in Chaisa; to investigate perceptions regarding domestic violence as a serious problem among Chaisa residents; to determine the role that the Chaisa community play in preventing domestic violence and to find out whether or not there are any community owned initiatives aimed at preventing domestic violence in Chaisa. The study was a descriptive survey in its design and adopted qualitative research methods. The study site was Chaisa Township in Lusaka Urban and the total sample size was sixty seven (67). In-depth Interviews and Focus Group Discussions were used to collect data. Probability multi stage sampling was used in recruiting household participants and non- probability purposeful sampling was adhered to in recruiting community leaders into the study. The data collected was analysed using content analysis. The study found out that there was a high prevalence of domestic violence in Chaisa. Most people in the community were not involved in preventing domestic violence. However, some members of the community prevented violence using some of the following strategies: intervening in incidences of domestic violence, reporting domestic violence cases in the neighbourhood to the police, women submitting to husbands or avoiding quarrelling with drunken spouse or simply walking away when angered. As for the community leaders, the study found that, most churches emphasised marriage values to their members which discouraged violence and some churches provided women economic empowerment programmes to lessen economic dependency on men. Marriage counsellors discouraged couples against domestic violence while some political parties were also involved in handing over repeat offenders of domestic violence to the police. However, there were no community owned organisations dedicated to domestic violence prevention. Therefore, the study concluded that, there needs to be massive sensitisation on the subject of domestic violence and women’s rights for strengthened, organised and sustained initiatives aimed at preventing domestic violence in Chaisa. The researcher recommends massive sensitisation on the subject of domestic violence in Chaisa, all perceived community leaders need to be educated on domestic violence so that they take part in prevention efforts, the Chaisa Ward Development Committee must immediately initiate strategies on domestic violence prevention and also women economic empowerment is urgently required in Chaisa as economic dependency on men was cited as a major contributor to domestic violence in Chaisa. The researcher also recommends that there is urgent need to implement the National Plan of Action on Gender Based Violence (GBV) of 2010-2014 which has elaborated on community participation in eradicating GBV.

▼ This dissertation is entitled ‘Communication as a factor in the perpetration and prevention of domestic violence against women among the Bemba people of Mwamba’s Village in Kasama District.’ The scourge of domestic violence against women in Zambia has reached alarming proportions and calls for the attention of all stakeholders. Some victims of domestic violence end up being traumatized, maimed or dying thereby compromising the survival and psychological development of their children.This study was aimed at investigating whether Bemba communication culture is a contributing factor to domestic violence against women and at finding out how the same Bemba communication culture can be used to fight this scourge. A snap shot survey design was adopted in this research; employing the triangulation approach to data collection and analysis. The qualitative data gathering methods included the review of secondary data on the topic as well as five in-depth interviews and four focus group discussions. As regards the quantitative methods of data collection, there was community mapping and a questionnaire which was administered to 90 members of the community. The research participants were chosen by purposive as well as cluster sampling. The quantitative data obtained from the field research was processed into tables and charts by means of Microsoft excel while the qualitative data was summarised and arranged into themes. The study found out that women have lost the high status that they enjoyed in Bemba society. The Bemba communication system is now dominated by men and the cultural messages favour men rather than women. Although the people of Mwamba’s Village perceive domestic violence against women as an issue and are aware of the gender imbalances present in their communication culture, they believe that their culture fights against domestic violence against women rather than contributes to the problem. The researcher’s conclusion is that Bemba communication culture is a driver of domestic violence against women. Since this is a communication issue, behaviour change campaigns would help to address domestic violence against women. Nevertheless, this approach has to be combined with social change communication and advocacy communication. The researcher, therefore, recommends that the powerful Bemba communication media and channels be employed for an effective and efficient response to the problem.He is calling on government organslike the presidency, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Ministry of Gender, the courts of law and the police to work closely with NGOs, the media, the Church and traditional leadership in order to come up with culturally embedded communication programs to fight domestic violence against women in Zambia.

▼ ZNBC as the national broadcaster had for a long time enjoyed monopoly of broadcasting. Since inception it was considered as a free service and people never paid subscription. Through an act of Parliament number 20 of 2002, ZNBC was mandated to collect TV levy from everyone who owns a TV set in Zambia. From the time the TV license initiative was launched, ZNBC managed to rehabilitate some of the run down studios and turned them into modern studios using revenue raised from TV license fees. Due to the introduction of the television levy, government cut all funding to ZNBC as it was expected that TV levy will improve the financial situation at the Corporation. However, Over 10 years down the line, it appears that TV levy has not been fully embraced by the Zambian public. This is evidenced by the low compliance levels that are now at 20% (ZNBC Research Unit 2013). Of this amount, not more than 400 households are on the ZESCO TV levy plan. ZNBC has continued to face hostility whenever issues of TV levy arise. The public has often times attached the payment of TV levy to high expectations of improved programming on ZNBC. TV levy inspectors have also faced resistance in the course of collecting TV levy. Further research has revealed that TV levy accounts for only 20 % of ZNBC‘s total income. It is evident that there is a communication gap in the way TV levy is run. This research therefore seeks to evaluate the communication strategies that ZNBC is using in TV levy in order to offer a solution to this challenge as well as encourage a buy-in from the public. The TV levy is a national program and communication plays an important role in the overall success. This study evaluates the communication strategies used by the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation in the implementation of the Television Levy in Lusaka. The study addressed critical questions such as; what are the communication strategies used by ZNBC in the TV levy? Which channels are used by ZNBC in TV levy? What are the audiences preferred source of communication for messages on TV levy? The study further addresses the communications gap that exists in the TV levy implementation. Data was collected from residents in Kabulonga, Kalingalinga, Chilenje and Chongwe, ZNBC members of staff, and relevant documents on TV levy. Research tools used to collect data were self-administered questionnaires and in depth interviews
