▼ The purpose of the study is to explore the strategies in the development of Chiayi
cultural tourism through the five dimensions of supply aspectsï¼attractions, services, transportation, information, and promotion. The researcher takes the methods to develop Chiayiâs
cultural tourism strategies through
tourism resources data analysis, three cases study, and deep interview to induct the strategies. Then, the strategies are evaluated by Delphi.
Culture is the core and added-value element in any industries.
Cultural tourism is the trend in the world
tourism industries. Using the unique natural resources or human resources to develop the regional culture
tourism, we can get the competitiveness and uniqueness to be the only tour destination and attract tourists to visit.
The results of the study reveal that
1. In the region of Chiayi, there are some essential elements in developing
cultural tourism such as ecotourism tours, aboriginals tour, tea-drinking , rail tours, gourmet guide, educational tour, International Band Festival, and the branch of the Palace Museum. They are the niches to develop the regional
cultural tourism.
2. Government and non-profit organization and commercials play important roles in regional
tourism development. The government establishes policies and rules to set up the friendly tour environment and attracts commercials to invest. Commercials can provide tourists with the essential entertainment equipment, lodging and food service. Non-profit organizations will balance the regional
tourism development and area conservation. Schools will also cultivate the human resources for
tourism and do the researches in the
tourism development to promote the regional
cultural tourism.

▼ Enhancing
cultural content as the core element,
cultural tourism, emphasizing on providing in-depth experience of
tourism, has increasingly become an important trend in recent years. As a historical city in Taiwan, Tainan City, with its advantage of a number of various
cultural heritage sites closely related to the historical and social change in Taiwan history, would intensely integrate resources of historical preservation and city culture to reach the goal of culture
tourism. It is critical to develop the local distinctive products, provide in-depth experience of
tourism, enhance the relationship of
tourism and the destination, and enrich goals of
cultural tourism. This research would attempt to discover the situation, which resources are adopted as well as operated, from three aspects of governmental, non-profit and commercial sectors, and to make further suggestions for resource management and product planning for
cultural tourism.
A case study is chosen as research methodology. This research would focus on the review and discussion of development and possibility of
cultural tourism resources in the so-call
cultural capital, the downtown area of Tainan City. Research data are mainly acquired via the approach of document analysis, observation and interview, reviewing from the three aspects of governmental, non-profit, and commercial sectors. Research questions are as followed: 1. What is the supply of
cultural tourism in the downtown area of Tainan city? And what has been done from the three sectors? 2. What kind
cultural tourism products and experienced products are developed in the downtown area of Tainan city? 3. Regarding to management of
cultural tourism resources, what had been made in its authenticity, sustainability, and community participation in the downtown area of Tainan city?
The conclusions of this research are as followed: 1. Regarding to the
tourism supply in the downtown area of Tainan city,
cultural tourism resources have been categorized into three aspects: history, humanity and life attitude, while transportation has been evaluated as the most disadvantage part, and a platform for
tourism information interchange was expected to be established. 2. Among the three sectors regarding to the development of
cultural tourism, the governmental sector is to be responsible for the resources integration, and non-profit
sector plays the role as advising and an example of public sector. The commercial sector would pay more attention upon a closer linkage of
cultural tourism products and the culture elements of the city. 3. For the development of
cultural tourism product, more focus would emphasize on the concept of
cultural route or themed program; site-specific theatre production, considered as a potential product, takes the advantage of historical and
cultural feature of the downtown area of Tainan City. The passage of core culture through the traditional folk festivals and events has become a crucial issue. 4. Among the souvenirs, the creative products selected from the Bureau of
Cultural Affairs and…

Nowadays, the world tourism market shows an evolution of the generalized mass
tourism into a more individual type of tourism, more specialized and demanding. The
access to travelling is largely spread all around the world, and presently at an increasing
rhythm, creating the need for the destinations of investing in specialization, in quality
and in diversification as a way to attract visitors. Within this context, the military tourism, integrated in the cultural tourism, is presented as a complement to the touristic
offer that already exists in Peniche – in a region characterized by the prevailing sea and
sun tourism, it’s important to bet in other complementary kinds of tourism which will
allow to diversify the offer, decrease seasonality and attract more visitors and increase
their stays, with its positive economic impact.
The concept of dark tourism, within which the military tourism is integrated, has
been outlined and studied during the last few years, and there are many places around
the world where the concept has already been applied in the recent decades. It’s a
relatively recent subject, as far as studies and publishing are concerned, but…

▼ Film
tourism is a growing phenomenon worldwide. Popular films and television series shooting in a destination can be seen as a very efficient driver for attracting tourists. This thesis was conducted at a Chinese film set, Grand View Garden, Beijing from June 2013 to February 2014. The research site is not only a film set where the famous television series The Dream of the Red Mansion, an adaptation of the much loved novel of the same name, was shot, but it is also a site with profound
cultural and heritage significance. This thesis attempts to examine and compare four relevant stakeholders’ attitudes to the Garden and their suggestions for the Garden’s future development. Within the film
tourism research area, existing research studies mainly focus on western film sets, with few studies paying attention to Chinese film sets, and this includes even Chinese studies. This research study tried to investigate the relevant film stakeholders’ perceptions by adopting mixed methods, including Questionnaire research, Open-ended questions, Semi-structured interviews, Documents, Conversations, Observation, and Photography. The collected quantitative data was analyzed by SPSS software, while the qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis methods and textual analysis software.
This thesis focused on four main stakeholders, namely: visitors, local residents, Grand View Garden Administration officers, and China
Tourism Academy staff. For the visitor stakeholders, 1140 useful questionnaire copies were collected to examine visitors’ prior expectations and impressions of the Garden, the importance of different motivations for visitors, the degree of satisfaction derived from their visiting, and their thoughts about film
tourism. Furthermore, 20 in-depth interviews were used to investigate visitors’ perceptions of and suggestions for the Garden, as well as supporting the quantitative results. For the local resident stakeholders, 20 in-depth interviews (using the same questions asked of visitor stakeholders) were employed to investigate the reasons for residents visiting the Garden, and to examine residents’ positive and negative perceptions about the site, and their suggestions. For the third stakeholder, the Garden’s administration officers, 10 interviews were used to explore site officers’ attitudes about the Garden’s past, its present, and its future. In addition, 10 interviews were adopted to investigate the China
Tourism Academy staff’s perceptions about Chinese film
tourism, and their suggestions for the Garden’s development direction.
The findings revealed that visitors’ travel motivations and perceptions were quite different from those of local residents. The majority of visitors was aged between 17 and 30 years, and had a degree. The icons of The Dream of Red Mansions were the most important reasons for visitors to visit the Garden, but not the sole reason; both the relaxing and sightseeing motivators were also important to visitors. However, most residents were middle-aged and elderly, and were also retired,…

▼ Cultural clusters with an agglomeration of heritage and historic assets represent national or local history, culture and tradition. Hence, they often become distinctive urban tourism resources supplying multifunctional places for tourists to visit and enjoy. However, the designation of a cultural district by government is not merely a strategy for the preservation of cultural assets and tourism development because a variety of stakeholders, with divergent goals and objectives, are usually involved in the process of converting cultural resources into marketable products. The number of tourists to Insadong, a representative traditional cultural district in Seoul, Korea, has increased rapidly in the last decades with many issues and problems. Insadong is a place where Koreans and foreigners alike experience Korean tradition and it is a unique area where the atmosphere combines both the historical and modern in the centre of the city. The area is also multi-functional, offering a mix of history, entertainment, cuisine, shopping etc. for a mixed clientele. This area has a long history as a cultural business district which was organically generated, but numerous issues and changes have occurred in relation to the commercial development and policy of government. Since this area gained fame as a tourism destination after it was designated as a cultural district, it also encountered problems like rising rental fees, change of space use, modifications in the items for sale, and destruction of small traditional art-related shops, which created the traditional atmosphere. This study examined the policies of the public sector and the role of the private sector in the development of Insadong through examining the government’s assessment and perspectives, the NGO’s perspectives and the entrepreneurs’ situation and expectations for business. Through analyzing crucial events, NGO’s activity, and the initiation of government policies, my research reveals dramatic change under the impact of tourism and government policies, as well as recent problems that have occurred at the cultural district. This study also examined aspects of heritage tourism in an evolving culture cluster in a major city. To the author’s knowledge, this type of research has not been undertaken previously in Korea and is rare in Asia. However, it is difficult to generalize from a case study. Thus, there is a need to undertake similar studies elsewhere to determine if what has been observed in Insadong is unique or if it is an example of a phenomenon that can be observed in other places.

▼ Craig & Muller (2006) assert that communication theory should take a critical approach because one of the main purposes of analysis from a communication’s perspective is to question assumptions caused by “unexamined habits, ideologies and power relations” (p. 425). By working within a critical framework, this project investigates the possible ideological perspectives and power relations represented in contemporary tourism marketing, specifically regarding cultural representations. The main research questions guiding the major research paper are: How do tourism images construct visual representation of culture? And what ideological values are depicted? I collected 71 images found in G Adventure’s North Africa/Middle East and Asia destination brochures and used Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) social semiotic and critical framework as a methodology for analysis. Findings reveal connections to postcolonial theory in particular, specifically how travel images participate in ‘othering’ foreign cultures from the perspective of the West. Images depict visual binary relationships, such as master/servant and traditional/modern, in addition to reflecting a level of detachment between the represented and interactive participants. Likewise, the viewer as the prospective traveller is encouraged to participate in a postcolonial bias upon the site.

▼ This research project aims to investigate the potential for the development of tourism focused on the cultural heritage of Theravada Buddhism in Pattaya, a city in Eastern Thailand, to complement the existing tourism industry in Pattaya. The research also aims to develop an implementation strategy for Theravada Buddhism cultural tourism suitable for incorporation into the Pattaya tourism plan, which as yet does not address the promotion of cultural or religious tourism. Previous research suggests that cultural tourism involving Theravada Buddhism has the potential to attract international tourists and drive economic growth. Significantly, religious tourism is a sustainable and non-commercial form of tourism development which can preserve local identity. Theravada Buddhism is thus an aspect of cultural capital capable of adding value to many tourism destinations in Thailand, including Pattaya. This research adopts a qualitative methodology within an interpretative research paradigm in order to reflect the interests, values and attitudes of local people in Pattaya. Research data was obtained using semi-structured interviews with thirty-three participants selected by means of purposive sampling from key tourism stakeholders in Theravada Buddhism cultural tourism in Pattaya, including Pattaya city hall officials, national government officials with responsibilities involving culture and tourism, tourism business people, monks and lay temple volunteers, and Thai tourism academics with expertise in cultural or religious tourism. Thematic analysis was employed to categorise, analyse, and synthesise the interview data. The research outcomes suggest that the development of Theravada Buddhism cultural tourism would have positive social and economic effects on Pattaya. Such development would represent an additional source of income for Pattaya’s tourism industry, although the income is likely to be modest in comparison to existing forms of tourism such as entertainment since Buddhism is not compatible with excessively commercial development. However, the research suggests Theravada Buddhism cultural tourism could generate sociocultural value and be developed sustainably with low initial investment, yielding long term benefits. These benefits include improving Pattaya’s image as a destination and preserving and promoting local and national cultural heritage and identity. The strategy for the sustainable development of Theravada Buddhism cultural tourism developed on the basis of the research results is focused on addressing six key issues: (1) key stakeholders to be involved in the management of religious tourism; (2) sources of investment funds; (3) suitable sites for development; (4) the development of a Theravada Buddhism cultural learning centre; (5) the creation of creative cultural activities for tourists; and (6) ways of promoting Theravada Buddhism cultural tourism with sensitivity. These issues underpin the following five sub-strategies: (1) cooperation between Pattaya City Hall and government authorities in…

▼ Cultural heritage tourism is a complex field involving many factors, including the business of tourism, the needs of the host community, and the management and preservation of heritage assets. This thesis aims to discover what factors play a
key role in the success of cultural heritage tourism operations. Through research of literature and case studies, recurring factors taken from success stories and the evaluation of cultural heritage tourism failures has led to the development of a list
of eight critical success factors that play a key role in successful cultural heritage tourism operations. Although success is not solely dependent upon these factors, they have been important in the successes of the case studies discussed in this thesis
and throughout cases studied in academic literature. Therefore, it is recommended that these factors be considered when developing any cultural heritage tourism operation.

▼ Symbolized as a kind of life style, the
cultural tourism became an integral part of consumer society in modern world. Most nation governments or regional organizers have renewed these faces of
cultural commodity through their trick of spectacle which was used to be attracting and promoting benefits of
cultural tourism. Taiwan government has begun a discussion of developing new policy for the repertory since 2008, even though, there were various problems in the promoting process, and they could be deemed as an explorative period. Therefore we should research these experiences for governmentâs reform and provide them to relevant performing groups, not only for correcting misconceptions but also for providing adequate examples of repertory for futureâs development.
Furthermore, we have to ask three questions about the repertory phenomenon: (1) How can the repertory molds be established with
cultural spectacle and become an eidetic symbolization of
cultural tourism? (2) Standing at the position of performance arts group, what dose they need the conditions of repertory? How can we improve the circumstance and reality in promoting it with the benefits of
cultural tourism? (3) What the role of government, company or arts groups should be in any operative situation of repertory? Since these questions are main issues in this research, so it follows the research structure with qualitative method, we have gathered material through archive research and have made in-depth interviews. By that we also try to exposit some theories for expounding the characteristics of
cultural capital and
cultural spectacle, and applying them to discuss the phenomenon of
cultural tourism of the consumer society. Then, we make a new clarification of used definitions of repertory that let us find out the core difference between âtourist programs as repertoryâ and âclassical program as repertoryâ. With the experience of repertory policy of
cultural tourism in Taiwan, we have probed the commodities of
cultural tourism to what the conditions repertory should be.
In the conclusion, we ought to say that performance arts should not be completed if the repertory was taken by them independently. The government has to provide the grants for guaranties of adequate performing spaces and always gives the respects of autonomy and independence to the public affair of arts, combines diversities and distributes resources with local government, and finally it can supply a high quality circumstance to create any actual repertory in Taiwan.

▼ This interdisciplinary research analyses the relationships between
cultural sustainability and food
tourism by asking how rural
tourism stakeholders understand these concepts, mobilize the interrelationships, and to what purpose. Researchers concerned with the complex, interrelated, and multi-scalar relationships between culture and rural
tourism development have explored both positive and negative dimensions in diverse contexts; however, more systematic attention to the concept of
cultural sustainability is needed to design supportive rural
tourism policies and processes. Wine and food
tourism is one of the fastest growing rural
tourism niches and intersects with critical
cultural sustainability issues such as local food systems, food sovereignty, and agricultural land use, therefore, it is particularly important to explore
cultural sustainability in food and wine
tourism environments. Comparative case studies in two Canadian wine regions, British Columbia's South Okanagan Valley and Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley, are used to gain a better understanding of the relationships between local food cultures, rural
tourism development, and sustainability in different provincial settings with a particular emphasis on the role of related public policy, planning and governance. As this research aims to understand rural food tourism’s potential contribution to
cultural sustainability, an appreciative approach was used. Secondary research, semi-structured interviews, and
tourism strategic plans provide insights into how culturally sustainable food and wine
tourism is conceptualized, recognized, developed, supported, and promoted in each case. Findings are discussed in relation to Soini and Dessein’s (2016) framework for culture in, for, and as sustainability. Three central recommendations are proposed: explicitly engaging with the idea and implications of local, exploring transformative potential, and future research that takes comparative, appreciative and reflective approaches.

▼ The following is a qualitative exploration of place
identity, wilderness and cultural tourism interpreter guides, and
sustainable tourism development in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Four
research sub-questions are used to glean insights and advance this
study: 1) how are Yukon place identities characterized in relation
to remoteness?; 2) how is Yukon tourism positioned in relation to
these place identities of remoteness?; 3) how is remoteness
reflected in the place identities of wilderness and cultural
tourism interpreter guides?; and 4) how do the place identities of
wilderness and cultural interpreter guides influence the way they
design and deliver their tourism activities? Recognizing the
importance of “sense of place” as a tourism development tool,
cultural geography was used to analyse guide place identity in
relation to place-making and place-marketing processes. The study
involved textual analysis of resident and tourist oriented
documents, participant observation of guides and their tourism
activities, and an analysis of place identity narratives identified
in interviews with wilderness and cultural tourism guides. Three
collective place identity narratives were used as a framework to
examine place relationships in a tourism context: 1) Masculinist
Narratives, 2) Narratives of the New Sublime, and 3) Narratives of
Loss. In this study, place identity is explored in terms of the way
it is expressed through, and influenced by, notions of
“remoteness.” Remoteness is conceptualized as a social, cultural,
historical and geographical construct that holds meaningful – if
differently experienced and expressed – place identity values for
residents and tourists alike. Remoteness is defined by the Yukon’s
vast wilderness, its distance [real and perceived] from southern
Canada and “civilization,” and its unique cultural makeup and
history, especially with regard to lingering notions of an untamed
frontier and its First Nations residents. Findings discuss
infrastructure as a pivotal paradox; one that hinges on the
“remote-accessible” nature of the Yukon’s tourism development
question. Relationships between guide place identity, tourism
experience authenticity and the nature of interpretation, type of
tourism operation and tourism experience are identified and
considered in relation to special interest tourism. Finally,
implications for tourism and destination management and the goals
of sustainable tourism development are discussed.

▼ Cultural tourism is considered to be one of the
largest and fastest growing types of global
tourism markets.
Culture is increasingly being used to promote destinations and
enhance their attractiveness and competitiveness. Many cities are
now actively developing their
cultural assets as a way of
developing comparative advantages over others in the
tourism
marketplace. In the light of this, there is need to diversify the
tourism economy of the City of Johannesburg by strengthening the
Cultural tourism aspect. Despite the fact that Greater Johannesburg
Metropolitan Area has a good
cultural infrastructure which includes
a number of theatres, museums and art galleries,
cultural tourism
is one of the underdeveloped aspects of the local
tourism economy.
The main focus of the research was to identify ways to diversify
the
tourism economy of the City of Johannesburg by anchoring it on
cultural products and activities, thereby improving the
cultural
image and competitiveness of Johannesburg as an urban
cultural city
destination in Africa.

Over the last decade, tourism has been developing in Saudi Arabia through the pilgrimage to Mecca, seen as a lever for attracting foreigners. This has meant that local stakeholders have primarily focused on the extension of the Holy Places without taking into account the diversification of tourism activities, whereas by working collectively they could enhance the interest of the country's cultural resources. In other words, there is a problem of the uniformity of the Saudi tourism offer. However, cultural sites could…

▼ In recent years, educational
tourism has been established as an alternative to conventional mainstream
tourism with a focus on learning through travelling.
Cultural educational
tourism is a type of
tourism engaged in by travellers whose primary motivation is to learn about and to experience a host culture through in-depth encounters. This niche has had research attention, most commonly with a focus on educational
tourism where the primary motivation is studying or learning (Go & van Fenema, 2006; Kalinowski & Weiler, 1992; Lück, 2003). This research explores the nature of Swedish tourists’ experiences on
cultural educational tours to Tanzania. The principal objectives of the research were to gain an enhanced understanding of the
cultural educational tour experience and to understand the nature of personal benefits derived from the experience.
For purposes of the research, a phenomenological approach was adopted and pure qualitative research techniques with a temporal framework were implemented. The applied methods were semi-structured interviews, participant observation and personal travel diaries, which were implemented throughout
cultural educational tour experiences that took place in Tanzania during three different tours. The empirical research was conducted during the anticipation, actual, reflection and recollection phases in order to gain an in-depth insight into the dynamic and complex experience of the participants. Twenty-seven Swedish tourists were included in the sample and in a total, 72 semi-structured interviews were conducted and divided throughout the following phases: 18 during the anticipation phase, 27 in the reflection phase and 27 in the recollection phase. As well, 20 personal travel diaries were completed by the tourists during their tour experience. Researching
cultural educational tour participants’ subjective experiences through a longitudinal process and with the same participants throughout the various stages of the tour experience is rare, if not unprecedented, in the
tourism literature. The qualitative materials employed in this study were generated in association with three extended tours to Tanzania in February, June and October of 2006, each lasting three weeks. The researcher was present on two tours for a total of 6 weeks.
The interpretation and analysis of qualitative materials indicates that participation had a profound effect on all participants in the study. Participants reported on a benefit that related to a personalised
cultural awareness and appreciation of the culture being visited, as a result of close
cultural interactions with the hosts, and which intensified in the months following the tour experiences. The study also presents evidence of personal growth, which in turn gives rise to a sense of enhanced tolerance and understanding of one’s own actions during and after the tour. As well, critical interrogations of attitudes towards non-sustainable and ethical
tourism development built up during the actual tour. This seemed to be most prominent among participants…

▼ Mestrado em Arquitectura Paisagista - Instituto Superior de Agronomia
The Cultural Landscape of Sintra, classified in 1995 by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, is the testimony
of a unique symbiosis between Nature and Man.
The specific microclimate and lush vegetation gives to Serra de Sintra the bucolic spirit that promoted,
since long times, its occupation by different cultures: From Neolithic vestiges to the medieval Suntria;
convents and hermitages scattered throughout the solitude of the Sierra, the establishment of the royal
court and nobles in their recreational farms, harmoniously arranged amidst the massive granite blocks and
the lush vegetation brought from various parts of the world. The Landscape of Sintra was built under
artistic and literary influences, being even today considered as a reference of the expression of the
Romanticism, which influenced the Europe of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
This unit, also integrating the Natural Park of Sintra-Cascais, is characterized as well as a rich area, but
highly sensitive. The current urban pressure and constant threats to the preservation of this site, including
the forest area, motivated the development of the present research, in order to the pursuit of conservation
of this landscape of incomparable value, as well as its maintenance as a classified heritage of UNESCO.
As the main objective, we intend to develop a proposal for a new Management Plan for this Cultural
Landscape, seeking a coherent development from the standpoint of tourism and economic development.
With the design of strategies aiming the protection of the site, by leveraging their capital gains,
dissemination and transfer of knowledge to the communities, the maintenance and the perpetuation of
cultural identity, the ecological values and the biodiversity of the Sierra will be assured, thus allowing the
full experience in this heritage

▼ The overall theme of this dissertation is to understand, through the heritage cityscape of Trinidad, aspects of the processes of the reconfiguration of political economy in today's Cuba. In late socialist Cuba, tourism is a key sector sustaining the revolution, and heritage cityscape constitutes one of the main tourist attractions. In this regard, the city of Trinidad provides a vantage point to analyze heritage practices and the tourism economy. I argue that the heritage cityscape of Trinidad manifests a tension between neoliberal and socialist rationalities, as the preservation office is converted into a cultural agency that depends on its own entrepreneurship. In 1988, the historic urban center of Trinidad and the material remains of the sugar industry in the surrounding Sugar Mill Valley were declared a World Cultural Heritage site. The local agency in charge of its preservation is the Office of Conservation, the main site of this project. These local agencies and preservation professionals around the world produce and are produced by the global regime of heritage exemplified by UNESCO's World Heritage program. Although economic management is not the explicit end of heritage practices, to the extent that these agents are held morally accountable for the material conditions of the heritage sites, and that their insufficient performance is construed as unsuccessful entrepreneurship, the global regime of heritage operates by a neoliberal rationality. Maintaining a good cityscape signals good governance, and consequently success as a subject of the regime. In Trinidad, where tourism is the single most important industry, the city's future depends exclusively on heritage commodification; maintaining and restoring the past urban form. I call this looking forward through looking backward "heritage modern." While the actual heritage cityscape is not materialized in the way that the Office imagines it to be the "good cityscape," signaling the precarious state of the Office as the subject in the global regime, the Office maintains a firm grip on the discursive landscape over Trinidad's heritage. Thus within the tension between neoliberal and socialist rationalities, the Office claims to be the appropriate guardian of the local specificity of heritage within the global regime.

tourism has been regarded to provide an authentic and mutually beneficial relationship between volunteer tourists and residents based on volunteering. By exploring volunteer tourists' emotional solidarity with residents, the researcher aims to uncover the social relations between volunteer tourists and residents in practice. This exploratory study was conducted in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica during November 2012 to January 2013. Based on the two months of ethnographic field research, this research suggests that volunteer
tourism may not be superior to so-called “mass tourism” in terms of building harmonious relationships between volunteer tourists and resident. In this study, volunteer tourists’ feelings of closeness were merely feelings which boosted the identity of volunteer tourists from “tourists” to “volunteers”. This article contributes to the growing body of literature on volunteer
tourism by exploring the volunteer
tourism experience from the perspectives of international volunteers.

▼ This thesis aims to develop an intermodal surf travel writing through the exploration of, and engagement with, Haïti’s coastline. Actor-network-theory (ANT) provides the methodological and theoretical framework to explore and explain how the key topics - surf, travel (Haïti) and writing - are brought into productive conversation through translation across persons, artefacts and ideas as an expanding network. Fieldwork is structured and informed by postmodern ethnography as the primary research method of ANT approaches. The entire coastline of Haïti is explored through four research trips, where potential surfing locations are mapped, bringing together my practices as writer, traveller and surfer, theorised through ANT. Engagement with Haïti operates at two levels: the macro level is the rhythm and cycle of anabasis (moving from coast to interior) and katabasis (interior to coast); and the micro level is the activity of surfing and mapping of surf breaks, offering tropes for writing with surfing in mind. The resultant intermodal writing is also a means though which Haïti is both represented and celebrated. The core areas of study - surf, travel (Haïti) and writing - afford equal status (in correspondence with the methodological framework of ANT), as do the roles of geography, ethnography and writing. My holistic approach to research and writing is guided by the literal definition of both geography (‘writing out the earth’) and ethnography (‘writing out culture’). Both the practice based and discursive elements of the thesis also claim equal status. This research attempts to contribute original work to the subgenre of surf travel writing and its critical discourses, and writing on Haïti - each activity drawing on (and making particular contributions to) geography, and an ethnography that explicitly aims to ‘write out’ and celebrate Haïti’s coastscape (coastal landscape, seascape and culture).

▼ This research is concerned with advancing understanding of human-nature relationships and the ways in which people benefit from interactions with nature. This is important since economic accounts of the value of natural resources are most often used to determine priorities for action, leaving the more deep-felt and intangible ways that people experience and value nature largely excluded from decision making processes. The imperative to understand the more nuanced ways that people benefit from and value nature has gained traction in recent years most notably through high-profile analysis of natural resources which have made explicit their links to human well-being. This study aims to capture these wider values of the Jurassic Coast, Dorset and the ways in which it comes to resonate as significant and valuable to people. It uses both quantitative and qualitative techniques to gain rich insights into what this World Heritage Site really means to visitors and how experiences here underpin psychological well-being. A methodological innovation is presented in the human needs framework which is used to test the extent to which human needs thought to be important for psychological well-being are satisfied through interactions in the landscape. Moreover, it is hypothesised that this satisfaction leads to eudaimonic well-being which is concerned with positive psychological functioning and ‘flourishing’ (Ryan & Deci, 2001). This research has implications for tourism planning and management to ensure opportunities are created or maintained for human needs to be met in the landscape and for optimal visitor experiences to result. More widely, this research also has implications for understanding environmental value from a broad perspective and for using innovative methodologies to reveal these values, and to incorporate them in decision making processes in diverse policy areas.

▼ Legal instruments like national heritage designations frequently utilize a one-size-fits-all approach, but understanding the questions about how heritage is affected, conceptualized, and constructed requires local engagement. The local protective rite of Paantu Punaha, located in the town of Shimajiri on Miyako Island in southern Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, was designated as national Important Intangible Folk
Cultural Property in 1993. This event exists at the center of a nexus of longstanding folkloristic interest in Okinawan ritual as well as the growing popularity of the ritual’s central figures, the mud-covered visiting deities known as paantu. This research explores the economic and social realities that affect the ongoing practice of Paantu Punaha, while also looking at the influence of the system of intangible
cultural heritage designation and its effect on the town of Shimajiri. This research investigates how local conceptions of ritual meaning and practice exist as ritual, but also as
cultural heritage. Residents’ interpretation of ritual meanings intersect with contemporary concerns about social change, while their ritual understandings of Paantu Punaha come into conflict with visitors’ understandings, viewed through both action and discussion. As a national Important Intangible Folk
Cultural Property, it is possible to see the processes by which the paantu became designated heritage, and how it intersects with the experiences of people within Shimajiri. Through the ways that Shimajiri people identify problems and solutions that their community faces, it becomes possible to see how heritage is conceptualized and utilized locally.

▼ People communicate ideas and information through language. Communication is very important for people to understand each other, and language plays an important role in disseminating information and cooperation between individuals. This study explored the perceptions of the first year students at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Howard College Campus regarding the implementation of Language Policy in the
Cultural and Heritage
Tourism (CHTM) program. This study employs Policy Implementation Theory. Both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies were applied to explore the perceptions of students. It provides a descriptive analysis of the students’ perceptions of the implementation process used by the university. The findings revealed that the majority of students are dissatisfied with the language policy that is in place. Drawing from the findings, the inclusion of students and dissemination of information to students is recommended.

▼ Organised tours are one of the main ways that tourists experience cultural destinations. They are often described as 'a destination bubble', conveying a sense of isolation rather than involvement. The extent to which tour participants interact with and learn about destinations is not well understood, although the acquisition of knowledge is frequently cited as significant in peoples' decisions to travel by this mode. This research investigates cultural tour participants' experiences, and specifically addresses the extent to which participants' images of their destinations change or remain unaltered after their visit, and whether satisfaction from a tour can be linked to the degree of informal learning gained about the route. The concepts of tourism and cultural tourism are explored; definitions of 'culture' and theories on how culture is used, transformed and 'consumed' by tourists, are presented. The nature of the 'cultural route' is examined and two principal types are distinguished; those from antiquity, and tour routes operating in cultural destinations. The organised cultural tour, its origins and development are explored. The empirical research was developed from environmental psychology, employing route mapping to elicit information about tour members' knowledge before and after touring. Judgement and convenience-based sampling were used to select a cultural destination and Ireland was chosen because it presented elements coimnon to many non-specialised tour itineraries in Europe. A multi-method approach combined qualitative and quantitative techniques in the analyses of cognitive maps, and triangulated the findings with those from focused interviews and participant observation. The study successfully accomplished its objectives in finding that tourists' images changed in magnitude as the tour had enforced already well-defined images. In particular, tour members' knowledge of places positioned sequentially along a route tended to increase. The research has contributed significantly to the understanding of tourists' map formation processes and it was found that information sources are particularly important, although information about a destination may be stored in people's memories regardless of whether they have actually visited that destination. Indirect sources of information were not usually supplemented by new sources acquired at tour destinations. The thesis concludes by exploring the implications of the primary findings for academic study and the management of the cultural tours sector.

This project of "Reclamation and Regeneration of the Ancient Baray: A Proposal for Phimai Historical Park" aims to create a new destination for cultural tourism. It is also concerned with preservation of archeological site, objects, and artifacts, centering on the Phimai's Old Baray in Phimai Town. Phimai Town is considered to be one of most important historic towns. Phimai Town was an ancient city dating to the 11th century. Today there are traces of many layers of communities, all of them overlapping. It is also the location of the biggest Khmer Sanctuary in Thailand. Phimai town has many of the archeological sites within and in surrounding area. Of these, the Phimai's Old Baray, a water reservoir, is very important archeological site both for Phimai Town and for Thailand. Phimai's old Baray located on the south side of the town, has been dried for century and is being considered for restoration back to its original state by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand. The baray is a key element of Khmer urban planning design because it plays an important role in the water management system. Water is an essential resource for people both in the ancient time and in the present time. This project forces on the re-design of urban planning at Phimai's Old Baray. The aim is to bring back the important archeological site, Phimai's Old Baray, a step that will be advantageous to the agricultural industry for local usage. Another aim is to promote Phimai's Old Baray as a new cultural tourism attraction, and as an asset for Phimai Town by creating a conceptual link to the ancient Khmer Empire. The combination of archeological site, agricultural industry, and cultural tourism will enhance the new urban experience and cultural values of the present community and also direct to development of the community in the future in appropriate ways.

▼ As the initial section of the Silk Roads, Chang¡¯an-Tianshan Corridor, being inscribed as World Heritage in 2014, the interpretation issue of its associated properties has been more and more pressing because of the predictable growing number of tourists both domestic and overseas. Since the future visitors are not likely to travel the entirety of the extremely broad roads network, it is of great importance that a given site conveys the connection between the individual sites and the larger routes network, helping audiences construct a deeper understanding of the invaluable Silk Roads heritage. However, it is observed that some obvious deficiencies do exist in the current interpretive scheme so that the underlying connections can not be perceived by visitors completely and effectively. Recognizing these issues, the intent of this thesis is to analyze the existing problems thoroughly and find out the possible interventions to enhance the interpretation of relevant sites on the Silk Roads. In light of the large scale of the Silk Roads, the research mainly focuses on its eastern starting points, Shaanxi Province (the ancient Chang¡¯an City and its surrounding area) and its seven inscribed properties, which include two sites of ancient palace, four religious sites, and one tomb. Through documentation and assessment, their current conditions of interpretation are investigated and discussed. In addition, the three case studies of different categories are selected; surveys and interviews were conducted for further data collection. Based on the results of field research, a synthesized analysis of Shaanxi Silk Roads sites is generated and a regional interpretation framework is developed. To better illustrate the feasible interventions for each site, the specific proposals for the three case studies are presented and elaborated in detail to be served as references for other sites on the Silk Roads.

▼ This thesis examines the development of the
cultural landscape of western mining towns following the transition from an economy based on mining to one based on
tourism. The primary case studies are Bodie, California, Virginia City, Nevada, and Cripple Creek, Colorado. Each one is an example of highly successful
tourism that has developed in a historic mining town, as well as illustrating changes in the
cultural landscape related to this
tourism. The main themes that these three case studies represent, respectively, are the ghost town, the standard western tourist attraction, and the gambling mecca. The development of the landscape for
tourism is not just commercial, but relates to the preservation of history and authenticity in the landscape; each town was designated as a Historic District in 1961. An important part of this research is the role of popular culture and the mythic West and how these concepts have influenced the physical and
cultural landscape of the mining town. All of the case examples are affected, to a certain extent, by general ideas about the nature of a western mining town, as well as popular knowledge specific to the site.

▼ Cultural tourism began to be recognized as a distinct product category in the late 1970s when
tourism marketers and
tourism researchers realized that some people traveled specifically to gain a deeper understanding of the culture or heritage of a destination (Tighe, 1986). In most regions of the world, particularly in Europe and North America,
cultural attractions have become important in the development of
tourism. At the global level,
cultural attractions are usually perceived as being icons of important streams of global culture (Richards, 2001). Unfortunately, in developing countries, in which much of the earth's magnificent heritage is located, the preservation of this heritage turns out to be very difficult because there are many challenges in the developing world that often thwart conservation objectives.
Deeply rooted in its culture and resolutely opened to the world, Mali has witnessed a considerable increase in the development of
tourism in the last ten to fifteen years. The country hosts a number of authentic attractions making Mali a "sanctuary of African culture" (an expression used by "OMATHO", the Malian
tourism board). Most visitors come to the country to see its rich and diversified
cultural attractions among which the Dogon Country, home of one of the few ethnic groups in Africa that succeeded to preserve their rich
cultural heritage from outside influence. Today,
tourism has become a major source of income for the country and the Dogon communities, living in a very difficult environment, have found in
tourism a major tool of economic development (see table 1 in Appendix 3).
Today Dogon art has become famous and is particularly sought-after by collectors who offer generous prices for it. However, in Dogon communities, where traditional religious beliefs are partly expressed through masked dances and festivals, dances and masks bear a ritual meaning and the Dogon area is confronted to a
cultural loss illustrated by the illicit trade of their
cultural artifacts and the loss of value of their traditions and beliefs: "
tourism has become a major factor in the artwork leakage" in the Dogon area, (Shackley, M. (2001) Managing Sacred sites: service provision and visitor experience, p.43).
The goal of this study is to analyze the issue of
tourism and its impact on the Dogon culture, discover the causes of the
cultural changes affecting the Dogons today and understand whether they are the outcome of
tourism development or the result of the normal evolution of the Dogon communities as they open themselves to the global community.
This thesis is divided in five chapters and four appendices. A brief description of each chapter will be given in Chapter 1.
