O modo de produção capitalista tem alcançado todas as esferas da sociedade e espaços. Com isso o campo brasileiro está embrenhado num modelo de produzir que se caracteriza pela expropriação e injustiça sociais. Deste modo, o espaço agrário tem se tornado o espaço onde o capitalismo, seja na figura do capitalista, do Estado, do Banco, do latifundiário, alimenta suas características mais marcantes: exploração, segregação, expropriação. Não é novidade falar a respeito da quantidade de homens, mulheres e crianças que lutam por um pedaço de chão neste Brasil, tampouco da tamanha precariedade com que vive populações inteiras dos mais variados estados em povoados rurais deste país, sem nenhuma infra-estrutura básica. Por isso, estudar o camponês, seu modo de vida mesclado com a inserção do capitalismo na agricultura se faz necessário. Este sujeito dotado de particularidades que o distingue do restante dos trabalhadores, mantém-se no campo, ainda hoje, com características que divergem daquilo apregoado pelo sistema capitalista de produção. Mesmo inserido no mercado, vendendo seu produto na feira, transformando-se periodicamente em trabalhador rural assalariado, a terra ainda lhe representa a vida e o alimento, o modo de vida. O Estado, na função de assistir a sociedade (sem afastar-se do modo de produção vigente) tem de certa forma subsidiado financeiramente muitas famílias camponesas a partir de benefícios previdenciários e programas assistencialistas. Contudo, muitas vezes essa assistência, somada ao trabalho agrícola, ainda não são capazes suprir as necessidades dessas famílias. Daí a busca por um trabalho acessório capaz de assegurar essa população no campo. O camponês do município de Itabaiana é um sujeito com modo de vida próprio que lhe confere autonomia, contudo com a inserção cada vez maior do capitalismo no campo, a dependência financeira muitas vezes se torna real na vida desse sujeito, mas independentemente de ser autônomo ou dependente, o certo é que este sujeito social mantém-se ativo com suas peculiaridades que ao menos são intrigantes àqueles que têm como modo de vida o padrão capitalista de ser.

The capitalist mode of production has reached all spheres of society and space. Therewith, the Brazilian field is embroiled in a model of production that is characterized by the dispossession and social injustice. Thus, the agrarian space has become the place where capitalism, being the figure of the capitalist state, the Bank, or the landowner, feeds its most striking characteristics: exploration, segregation, expropriation. It is not a surprise talking about the amount of men, women and children who are fighting for a piece of land in Brazil, nor of such a precarious living with entire populations of many different states in rural villages of this country, with almost no basic infrastructure. Notre connaissance du cinéma français de l’après-Seconde Guerre mondiale s’est forgée à partir de la catégorie historique de la « qualité », employée sous les formes usuelles de « tradition de la qualité » et de « qualité française ». Pourtant, on peut considérer que celle-ci est un obstacle à la connaissance historique du cinéma de cette période. En effet, cette catégorie n’est pas neutre puisqu’elle est le produit du discours des « jeunes Turcs » qui l’ont employée pour combattre ce cinéma. Plutôt que de l’abandonner, il convient de lui redonner ses significations en questionnant sesorigines et en inscrivant le célèbre discours critique qui la constitue, la « qualité » contre le « cinéma d’auteurs », au sein d’une vaste bataille discursive engagée par les acteurs du champ cinématographique français depuis la Libération autour du soutien de l’État aux films de qualité. Cette thèse propose d’analyser cette bataille de la qualité ou la mise en place progressive, par les discours, entre 1944 et 1953, de ce modèle politique aujourd’hui indissociable du cinéma français.

Our knowledge of French cinema from after the Second World War was built from the historical category of « qualité », the so-called « tradition de la qualité » and « qualité française ». Nevertheless, one can consider the latter as an obstacle to the historical knowledge of cinema from this period. Indeed, this category is not neutral because it results from the speeches of the « jeunes Turcs », who used it to oppose this cinema. Rather than abandoning it, it is best to reveal its meaning by questioning its origins and presenting the famous critical speech which constitute it, the « qualité » versus the « cinéma d’auteurs », within a vast discursive battle engaged since the French Liberation by the actors of the French cinema, about the support of the French State for quality films. This thesis intends to analyse this battle of quality, or the progressive implementation through speeches between 1944 and 1953 of the political model, nowadays, indissociable from Frenchcinema.

O Mercosul, como resultado do processo histórico de produção capitalista do espaço, em tese, tenderá a conformar um novo ciclo de acumulação de capital na região. Exibindo, inicialmente, um corte marcadamente comercial e avançando para uma configuração mais econômica e social, poderá o Mercosul alcançar uma condição capaz de redistribuir, ao menos parte do produto dessa acumulação? O posicionamento do Mercosul em relação às teorias da integração regional, em especial, as relações em eixo permitem entrever maiores possibilidades históricas para alcançar tal dimensão? Tem-se como expectativa que o resultado da análise do processo histórico da integração nos países do Mercosul e a efetividade das políticas sociais até aqui adotadas, à luz das ondas de regionalismo, das diversas dimensões (política, econômica, social e ambiental) e fases temporais estudadas (neoliberal, crise e transição e convergente), aliado ao arcabouço teórico, possam indicar perspectivas de evolução da dimensão social do Mercosul. Ademais, investigar se as mudanças na orientação política dos governos dos países do bloco, de neoliberal para socialistas de diversos matizes, a partir da virada do século, estão criando condições distintas para a consolidação de sua dimensão social e contribuir para o preenchimento de certa lacuna na produção científica dessa área específica são os objetivos centrais da dissertação.

MERCOSUR, as a result of the historical process of capitalist production of space, in theory, will tend to conform a new cycle of capital accumulation in the region. Displaying, initially, a markedly commercial court and advancing to a more economical and social setting, can the Mercosur to achieve a condition able to redistribute at least part of the proceeds of accumulation? The positioning of Mercosur in relation to theories of regional integration, in particular the axis relations allow us to see larger historical possibilities to achieve this dimension? Has as expectation that the result of analysis of the historical process of integration in Mercosur countries and the effectiveness of social policies so far adopted, in the light of the waves of regionalism, the various dimensions (political, economic, social and environmental) and temporal phases studied (neoliberal, crisis and transition and convergent), coupled with the theoretical framework, could indicate the future trend with regard to the social dimension of MERCOSUR. Furthermore, investigate whether changes in policy direction of governments in the bloc of neoliberal for socialists of various hues, from the turn of the century, are creating different conditions for the consolidation of the social dimension and contribute to filling in a gap in scientific production in this particular area are the central objectives of the dissertation.

▼ Despite years of investment in urban water infrastructure, and the state–a supposedly benign public entity–being the major actor in governing water, many poor residents in global south cities such as Blantyre experience unprecedented water-related problems. The neoliberal narrative unequivocally advocates privatising water; it frames the water problem as symptomatic of the unravelling of non-economic means of distributing this basic necessity of life while revering the free market as a panacea to this long-standing challenge. This thesis draws from the production/urbanisation of nature/space literature to contribute towards framing an alternative and more just political ecological water narrative. Through a radical critique of capitalist urbanisation, it argues that the contemporary urban water condition is the outcome and symptomatic of the unjust historical geographical legacies of modernist/capitalist means of producing water. It problematises the neo-liberal “tragedy of the commons” discourse that attributes these problems to the non-commodity nature of water. Through a case study of Blantyre City, the thesis frames this critique through two claims (1) that there is no such a thing as non-commodified produced water in contemporary Blantyre; (2) that the commodification of water is nothing new, it is a histo-geographical process deeply rooted in logics and contradictions of capitalist production of nature and space. It traces a critical moment in the capitalist remaking of hydro-social relations to colonial modernisation. British colonisation (late 1850s-early 1960s) inserted money and modern techniques at the heart of human-water interactions thereby significantly transforming traditional modes of accessing water. During this period, water began to change from being a common good to an economic resource that could privately be enclosed and harnessed as a means to economic/private ends through modern techniques. Institutions created to mediate this emergent modernist water architecture were dominated by vested private settler interests, depended heavily on external financing and revenue generated from exchanging water through money. British colonisations then sow first seeds in inserting monetary exchange, class and social power as mediators of the human-water interchange thereby entrenching social inequalities in Blantyre’s waterscape. The post-colonial political transition in 1964 did little to radically reconfigure these colonial logics and their contradictions; in fact, albeit in qualitatively different ways, these dynamics intensified. The thesis establishes that these historical geographical dynamics continue to reproduce conditions through which underprivileged residents are alienated from water, and this basic need is commodified in contemporary Blantyre. In locating alienation and commodification within the wider historical geographical context of capitalist urbanisation, this thesis aims to critically engage with debates on neo-liberalisation of water. ▼ Since the 1950s, various Marxist political economists have confirmed the empirical actuality of the ‘law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall’. While the present thesis contributes to the burgeoning body of empirical literature that has substantiated Marx’s law, it differs from many of them in the underlying theoretic-methodological specifications guiding how the data provided in the national accounts should be translated for purposes of empirical research. Informed by a theoretical, methodological and empirical survey of the relevant literature, the thesis engages in a value-theoretical re-specification of Marx’s fundamental value-ratios for purposes of ‘testing’ Marx’s most crucial historical forecasts in relation to the concrete post-war evolution of the global epicentre of “advanced” capitalism: the US economy. It suggests some innovative methods of measuring ‘systemically necessary unproductive labour’, the ‘composition of output’ and economic growth alongside Marx’s fundamental value-ratios: namely, the rate of surplus value, the organic composition of capital and the average rate of profit. It also proposes a unique normalizing procedure for distinguishing between components of financial profit resting on surplus-value production from ‘fictitious’ components deriving from relations of credit/debt. This ‘normalization procedure’ permits a more realistic assessment of the amount of actual surplus-value transferred to finance, and therewith a more accurate calculation of the average rate of profit for the social capital as a whole in the “era of fictitious capital.” In sum, the empirical results disclose a long-term tendency for a rising composition of capital to exert a downward pressure on the average rate of profit – a tendency that has been offset in the neoliberal era to some extent by a rising rate of surplus-value (exploitation) and by a proliferation of fictitious capital imputed in the national accounts. Accordingly, this study confirms the empirical actuality of Marx’s most crucial historical forecasts – most notably, his law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall – while also revealing the systemic roots of the deepening malaise of the US economy and of world capitalism as a whole.

▼ This thesis asks how neoliberal enclavisation produces precarity. It focuses on eight months of fieldwork on large-scale dispossession of rural and peri-urban populations caused by the coal mining enclave in Tete, Mozambique, and my interpretation of Judith Butler's work on precarity, Henri Lefebvre's conceptualisation of the production of capitalist social space and Jacque Ranciere's understanding of politics. Bringing theory and empirical research together, I construct an original theoretical approach to explore how precarity as a condition of life, as well as the (im)possibility of politics, is constituted by contemporary capitalist expansion in Mozambique. I explore how precarity is produced through the interplay of structural, symbolic and direct violence of contemporary capitalist expansion, such as the coal mining enclave and resettlement sites inhabited by the dispossessed populations, in Tete. These processes of precarisation, I argue, result in the non-politics of abandonment that, whilst enabling life to be lived on precarious terms at the margins of the neoliberal mining enclave, does not openly challenge and only unwillingly reinforces the socio-material order of the neoliberal enclave. I demonstrate how this dynamic reconstitutes the precarity created by the violence of the neoliberal enclave and overshadows possibly different and progressively anti-neoliberal imaginaries of life and space in Tete. I conclude that these dynamics of precarity disactivate the possibility of transformative politics, and thus sustain and stabilise global capitalist expansion in Tete, and Mozambique more broadly. This reading of precarity makes several contributions to the literatures on the politics of precarity. It explores the condition of precarity outside the usual empirical and analytical focus of labour relations in the Global North, as well as developing a spatial reading of precarity. The thesis also challenges these, as well as broader literatures on agency in the context of structural inequalities and opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa, for overestimating possibilities of resistance in situations characterised by extreme precarity. Finally, the thesis contributes to the literature on contemporary neoliberal capitalist expansion in Sub-Saharan Africa by demonstrating how neoliberal enclaves result in human suffering outside of their own exclusionary spaces of accumulation. ▼ Résumé : Le développement durable est un processus d'évolution dans lequel toutes les ethnies coexistent en harmonie avec un environnement sain. Depuis une quarantaine d'années, le Laos a connu de nombreux bouleversements. Des groupes minoritaires, dont les Hmongs, ont subi les contrecoups des changements socio-politiques et économiques. Les Hmongs, qui habitent les régions montagneuses et qui pratiquent l'agriculture itinérante, sont particulièrement touchés par des inégalités économiques et sociales malgré la politique d'égalité ethnique. Les transformations progressives de leur méthode d'utilisation du sol, de leur mode de production et de leur mode de vie itinérants en sédentarisation durable deviennent fondamentales et cruciales. Les Hmongs défavorisés aspirent fortement à de meilleures conditions de vie tout comme les populations qui vivent dans les plaines. En effet, les Hmongs, qui habitent dans les régions de Lakhasipsong et de Longsan, province de Vientiane, s'adaptent aux nouvelles conditions de transformation socio-économique, soient la sédentarisation du mode de production et du mode de vie. On peut affirmer que le développement rural et communautaire permet la sédentarisation des Hmongs et que ces derniers sont aptes à s'adapter à la vie moderne. La méthode d'enquête par entrevue sur la base d'un sondage employée sur le terrain nous a permis de découvrir les caractéristiques de développement durable autant socio-économique que politique dans la province de Vientiane avec application particulière aux Hmongs. Les résultats de l'enquête démontrent que les stratégies de sédentarisation sans relocalisation et avec relocalisation sur l'initiative soit personnelle soit gouvernementale ont fait leurs preuves. Des changements dans les modes de production et de vie ont non seulement permis une meilleure utilisation du sol, une augmentation de la production et une amélioration des conditions de vie mais aussi une meilleure préservation de l'écosystème.||Abstract : Sustainable development is an evolutionary process in which all ethnie groups live in harmony with a healthy environment. For approximately forty years, Laos has been subjected to many disruptions. Minority groups, like the Hmong, have felt the full impact of the numerous socio-political and economic changes that took place in the country. The Hmong, in particular, who live in mountainous regions and practice slash and burn agriculture, have suffered from economic and social inequality policies praticed by previous governments. The progressive transformation of their methods of land use, their mode of production and their migrant life style must clearly be understood before any attempt at a sedentary life style with a view to a sustainable development be undertaken. The underprivileged Hmong aspire to better living conditions comparable to those of people living in the plains. ▼ The thesis explores contradictions that farmers see between current mode of production, and how they imagine that modes of production would need to change if there were no fossil fuels. Based on qualitative interviews with farmers, the aim of the study is to contribute to a discussion on strategies to increase the farms’ capabilities to produce food without fossil fuels. This topic is relevant from both environmental and contingency perspectives. I understand society of today as mainly driven by capitalist logic, meaning that the logics of capital are what most people perceive as the normal and rational way to organize society. The analysis is based on a theoretical framework that sees the dominant energy source as specific and conditional for the historical organization of different societies, focusing on the role of fossil fuels as specific to the current capitalist society. The analytical tools are derived from the concept mode of production, which puts focus on how the farm production is organized in regard to labor, skills, inputs and machines. By using a specific focus on how farmers describe contradictions between the current mode of production of farms and in the case of a sudden lack of fossil fuels, I elucidate features of current food production that are made logical and rational by using fossil fuels, but which seem less logical when there are no fossil fuels. I argue that the threat to food security is not due to the fossil fuel dependency per se, but due to how fossil fuels have and are enabling 1) social relations where the purpose of food is to be a commodity rather than to be nutrition for people, 2) spatial concentrations of refineries, distribution and consumers, 3) social relations with dispossession of means of productions for consumers and concentration of ownership of land for producers, 4) technical relations which drive deskilling of knowledge on how to produce food. For policymaking, this means that exchanging fossil fuels with other energy sources would not necessarily increase food security, as long as the above mentioned mechanisms are reproduced. To increase food security, agricultural policies need to aim at making food more than a commodity and decrease the distance between production and consumption, both in spatial terms but also in terms of knowledge and skills. These strategies are not necessarily compatible with the logics of the capitalist mode of production.

▼ This project identifies a recurring figure in late 20th century popular culture, the power manager, who is distinguished by a specific conjunction of “cool” sociopathic affect, “hollowed-out” interiority, and specialization in the immaterial labor of speculation and manipulation. This figure’s emergence and diffusion across Anglophone popular media is intimately connected to the intertwined ascendancies of speculative finance and neoliberal governance as the organizing forces of society. The power manager operates as an idealized model for the financialized subjectivity that neoliberal rationality assumes, whose power over others derives from his early adaptation to the demands of new economic structures. Drawing on theorizations of neoliberal governance and financial discourse by Wendy Brown, Mark Fisher, and Randy Martin, Managing Power interrogates popular narratives in order to trace finance capital’s influence on our capacity to imagine social power and agency, looking beyond popular representations of the business world to examine instead how neoliberal and financial logics have seeped into the structure of popular heroism and adventure narratives. By clearly articulating power management as a distinct neoliberal fantasy of masculine power and tracing its cultural history, Managing Power enables us to better diagnose this fantasy’s influence on our imagination of social interaction, social power, and social change. These fantasies of financialized power reinforce the message that, as Margaret Thatcher famously declared, “there is no alternative” to the neoliberal status quo. As a figure of elite cognitive labor, the power manager serves an important ideological role as a figure of male dominance able to navigate the shifts from productive to service/finance capitalism, as well as providing scripts of dominance that retrench white privilege in a time of growing diversity in both the workplace and popular culture. Managing Power exposes the pathologies of this fantasy of financialized neoliberal subjectivity, trace its influence, and so undermine the ideological justifications it continues to provide for inequality and privilege in contemporary literature and culture.

Namen pričujočega magistrskega dela je raziskati in primerjati delovne razmere v delovnih okoljih ter vzroke in izvore alienacije po državah Evropske Skupnosti. Želimo prikazati tudi njen obseg in razširjenost v kontekstu evropskih integracij, ter preučiti njene dejavnike in posledice v državah EU. Preučevali bomo alienacijo kot stanje in pojav v življenju posameznika, ki mu onemogoča osebnostni, socialni in ekonomski razvoj. Analizirali bomo teoretske definicije in posledice v literaturi kakor tudi težave v merjenju družbenih fenomenov. Alienacija v EU je razširjen, ponavljajoč se in nereflektiran pojav, zaradi česar se zdi neviden. Glavna teza naloge se nanaša na obseg pojava alienacije v EU, saj alienacija v sodobnem globaliziranem svetu in v državah EU predstavlja razširjen pojav. Izvirni prispevek našega dela se kaže skozi analizo družbenega problema alienacije, ki je splošen, pogost, vendar pa pogosto nereflektiran in zato neviden pojav. Skozi analiziranje različnih sekundarnih virov, v okviru različnih raziskav in sociološke strokovne literature, bomo poskušali vzročno-posledično in neeksperimentalno določiti faktorje in indikatorje alienacije.

The purpose of this work is to explore and compare circumstances in working environments and causes for origins of alienation between EU member states. We want to show the range and magnitude in context of European integrations, and to further study its factors and consequences in EU member states. We study alienation as state and phenomenon in life of individuals, which prohibits his personal, social and economic development. We analyze theoretical definitions and problems within literature and problems in measurement of these social phenomena. Alientation in member states of EU is a very spread, frequent and unreflected phenomenon, and that is why it seems invisible. Through study and analysis of secundary sources, diferent empirical studies and sociological literature, we will try to causally and non-experimentally determine the factors and indicators of alienation.

▼ Vertical structure of the low frequency horizontal currents at the northern edge of the Loop Current during eddy shedding events is observed using concurrent hydrographic, moored, and satellite altimetry data from 2005. Dynamic modes are calculated at three deep (~3000 m), full water-column moorings in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Time-series of the barotropic and first two baroclinic modes are found using a least squares minimization that fits theoretically derived modes to observed moored velocity data. EOF analyses show that the majority of observed variance is explained by a surface-trapped mode that is highly coherent with the temporal amplitudes of the first baroclinic mode, and a lower, but significant percentage of variance is captured in bottom-intensified modes. Amplitudes of the second empirical mode indicate that currents are more coherent in the ocean interior approaching the Loop Current, as more variance is explained by this mode at the southernmost mooring near the Loop Current. A dynamic mode decomposition of the horizontal currents reveals that the barotropic and first baroclinic modes exhibit low frequency variability and eddy time scales of 10 ? 40 days. Second baroclinic mode amplitudes show higher frequency variability and shorter time scales. A model utility test for the least squares fit of modeled to observed velocity shows that the second baroclinic mode is useful to the statistical model during 50 ? 85 % of the mooring deployment, and is particularly necessary to the model when cyclonic features are present in the study area. The importance of the second baroclinic mode to the model increases significantly closer to the Loop Current. High-speed currents associated with the Loop Current and anticyclones stimulate a strong first baroclinic response, but the second baroclinic mode amplitudes are found to be similar in magnitude to the first baroclinic mode amplitudes at times. This happens episodically and could be an indication of higher order dynamics related to frontal eddies or Loop Current eddy shedding. Advisors/Committee Members: DiMarco, Steven F.
