▼ Poverty has many deleterious effects on
child
development, including negative impacts on social-emotional health,
a developmental domain schools refer to as non-cognitive
skills
(Dearing, 2008). Unfortunately, children growing up poor often have
underdeveloped non-cognitive
skills, which significantly predict
academic success and well-being (Farrington et al., 2012).
Integrated Student Support (ISS) is one emerging approach that
holistically supports cognitive and non-cognitive student
development (Moore & Emig, 2014). While ISS has been found to
improve academic outcomes, limited research examines its impact on
social-emotional outcomes. This study focused on one ISS
intervention, City Connects, which provides tailored student
support plans to every
child in a school via school and
community-based services (Walsh et al., 2014). The study had three
aims. The first was to examine the percentage of City Connects
students with and without a social-emotional-behavioral (SEB) Need
across levels of risk and service characteristics (i.e., domains,
intensity levels, types) in second grade (N=896). The second was to
examine improvement in three teacher-rated non-cognitive student
outcomes (Prosocial Behavior, Self-Regulated Learning, Academic
Effort) from second-fifth grade for City Connects students with and
without a SEB Need (N=896). The third was to compare improvement in
the same three non-cognitive student outcomes from second-fifth
grade for students with a SEB Need in City Connects schools and
comparable schools without the intervention (N=1,778). Multilevel
modeling assessed aims 2 and 3. Significantly more students with a
SEB Need were deemed higher risk and received more health, early
intervention, and SEB/counseling services compared to students
without a SEB Need in City Connects schools. Further, significant
improvements from second-fifth grade were found in Self-Regulated
Learning and Academic Effort for City Connects students with a SEB
Need compared to those without a SEB Need. Significant improvements
were also found over time in Academic Effort for students with a
SEB Need in City Connects schools compared to those in comparison
schools. Findings support that ISS improves non-cognitive
functioning for students attending high-poverty
schools.

▼ Caring for a
child with disabilities and special
needs can be a challenging and arduous responsibility. Many parents are unprepared to cope with such event and encounter problems with their own health and psychological well- being. Conversely, when parents and families are empowered with appropriate tools and techniques they can overcome these difficult circumstances through the use of health coping strategies. This study will examine the use of coping strategies and the impact on parent’s psychological health. The literature review in this study will discuss coping practices, and the adverse affects on parent’s emotional welfare.
The research was conducted with eight parents who participated in an audio-recording, face-to-face interview with open-ended questions. The data of this study was collected and examined by utilizing qualitative methods. Interview data was transcribed into written form to explore and identify common themes. Researcher used a qualitative approach to understand participant’s experiences. The study discovered four common themes: 1. Social support systems, 2. Family Dynamics, 3. Spirituality, and 4. Positive Thinking. The findings of this study may increase awareness and understanding of healthy coping strategies utilized by parents of children with special
needs and how it may impact their psychological well-being. The research also addressed the limitations of the study, the significance of the study for social work and the future recommendations for the social work profession and future research.

▼ Preparing students to be career and work ready is a concern of educators and schools nationwide. Twenty-first century
skills prepare students to enter the workforce or higher education with the ability to think critically and creatively, collaborate with others, take the initiative when approached with a task, and use technology to its fullest potential. If students are not learning the
skills needed for success, it is because educators and schools are not teaching them. When students possess these
skills, they are prepared to work in teams, think critically and creatively about a problem, display leadership and social
skills, and communicate effectively with others.
The research sought to identify school-based agriculture education teachers perceived knowledge, importance, and ability to teach these 21st -century
skills in the classroom. Results showed that agriculture teachers nationwide find 21st -century
skills to be important, but they are less knowledgeable and able to teach them. The research concluded that professional development is needed to increase teacher’s knowledge of and ability to teach 21st -century
skills. Professional development will allow school-based agricultural education teachers to gain specific and applicable strategies for implementation. With the application of 21st -century
skills in the school-based agricultural education classroom, students will become better prepared to enter the workforce or higher education upon graduating high school.

▼ The mining engineering world is continuously experiencing new challenges whether it is economically, technologically or socially, there will always be something new in sight.
Training and Development fulfils the role of the “breeder” of competence workforce and therefore it is essential to assure constant growth and progress within the skills and development environment. Personal attribute and dedication are the drivers of our success and achievements in our careers. The capacity of our trade and occupation does not set the limits and pace of our intensification to strive for the bigger and better in future. The career background and training and development opportunities are essential aspects to be renowned with before engaging with the learning intervention. Assure you start your career in the artisan trade that you desire to be a successful example in and discover the engineering world where the spectrum is never-ending.
Development opportunities exist for all, irrespective of the trade and occupation.
This study illustrates that even the smaller trade‟s artisans as focused on in this study, namely the Rigger Ropesman, can achieve higher laurels if the energy and efforts are exploited in the applicable avenues. The starting blocks, must be the blocks that fit yourself as individual learner, if not, even the first steps in the career will be started in stumbling mode. This qualitative research design study discovered numerous persons who started a career without knowing what it entails. The Rigger Ropesman artisans, Engineering Foremen and Learners who were interviewed as the target group contributed to achieving the aim of the study. The aim of the study was the possible training and development opportunities for the Rigger Ropesman in the Mining and Minerals Sector. Future studies can be conducted on career guidance and training and development opportunities in other engineering trades as this study only focused on the Rigger Ropesman trade in the Mining and Minerals Sector.

▼ Hard
Skills are technical
skills or foundational
skills that allow one entry to perform on a job while soft
skills
are the human
skills that serve as a competitive advantage for
fostering a career success. Hospitality and culinary educational
programs that focus curriculums on hard skill training alone can no
longer satisfy the market
needs in preparing talents for the
service industry. Therefore, to close the industry-education gap,
this case study served two purposes: (1) to define the “soft
skills” with competencies valuable to the service industry at all
employment levels, and (2) to examine the amount of soft
skills
teachers incorporated into instruction at Kai Ping Culinary School.
Competencies identified to define “soft skills” were extracted
through a review of literature, and to assess the current levels of
teachers’ performance in incorporating soft
skills into
instruction. Guided by the Gap Analysis Framework, this study
adopted a mixed-method research design to seek causes to the
performance gap. Presumed causes were organized into knowledge,
motivation, and organization themes. To gather quantitative
results, a survey, filled by 26 teachers, were analyzed through
descriptive statistics. Using a snowball sampling and criterion
selection method, six teachers were interviewed for qualitative
analysis. Results and findings showed a grand mean of 66% of the
soft skill competencies were incorporated into instruction, and a
34% gap exists. Six validated causes were identified and a
three-part integrated solution was proposed. The proposed solution
suggested Kai Ping Culinary School to provide soft
skills knowledge
workshops, institute a mentor-coaching program, and establish an
evaluation system for formalize feedback and to increase growth and
accountability. An implementation and evaluation plan was
structured for practical implications.

▼ This study focuses on the skills and needs of forensic social workers, working with alleged child sexual abuse in the Western Cape. Forensic social work is based on specialised knowledge drawn from established principles and their application within proven methodology of training, familiarity with the law, evaluation and objective criteria associated with treatment outcomes. The scope of forensic social work thus includes a specialised skill where human service systems communicate the language in the context of legal systems. This means that the forensic process must withstand critical review and rebuttal from opposing parties in a legal system.
It is evident that a forensic social worker needs to have specialised training and specific skills, focusing on forensic investigative interviews, all aspects of child sexual abuse and how the South African justice system operates. Without these skills, the legal process may not be successful and the prevention of child sexual abuse not as successful as it might otherwise be.
The general aim of the study was to analyse the skills and needs of social workers assessing allegations of child sexual abuse in order to assist organisations working in the field of forensic social work by improving their support training practices in forensic social work.
The researcher used a quantitative descriptive design also known as a survey design. This design usually makes use of a questionnaire as a data collection method and nineteen (19) respondents were selected according to a randomised method of sampling. The findings form part of a list of recommendations to participating welfare organisations.

▼ The research problem of the present thesis was: What technical skills do graduates from specialization in Software Systems need? Triangulation; that is, several research methods and data sources were used to solve this problem. The largest part of the thesis consisted of three questionnaires where Finnish software developers (N = 11), professors and lecturers (N = 19), and Master's students (N = 24) evaluated the importance of 42 subjects and skills such as discrete mathematics and object-oriented programming. The second largest part of the thesis comprised two content analyses of job advertisements targeted at software developers. A trend analysis for the years 1990-2004 and a cross-sectional analysis of the year 2004 were conducted. In both analyses, the purpose was to find the most common technical skills sought in American job advertisements. In addition, four smaller content analyses were conducted. Documents for these content analyses were the degree requirements of 31 top-level American research universities, and the internship reports, course catalog, and Master's theses of the Helsinki University of Technology. A concept analysis of the concept "software systems" was also carried out. The main contributions of the present thesis are as follows: The thesis is so far the most versatile triangulation in the area in question. In particular, the content analysis of American degree requirements and the concept analysis of "software systems" were novel approaches. The thesis provided findings that the requirements for software developers have required greater versatility during the past 15 years. Todd, McKeen, and Gallupe reported similar change in 1995 for the 1970-1990 period. However, it was interesting to know if this trend had continued after 1990. According to the summarized results, the following technical subjects or skills were evaluated as being important: compilers, concurrent programming, data structures and algorithms, database management systems, distributed systems, object-oriented programming, operating systems, procedural programming, and software architectures. Most of these subjects or skills had already been reported as being important for software developers, for example, in the survey conducted by Lethbridge in 1998. The importance of physics and continuous mathematics was evaluated as being low. Previously, Lethbridge reported similar findings. In the job advertisement analyses of the present thesis, technical skills were analyzed in a more detailed manner than in the previous analyses on average. In particular, some results concerning distributed technology skills were new and more detailed than previously published.

▼ This study is a
needs assessment of teachers seeking
to develop 21st Century
Skills among incarcerated youth (IY). The
researcher uses Clark and Estes’ (2002) knowledge, motivation, and
organization (KMO) framework to describe those challenges. The
researcher surveyed 22 teachers (n=22) and interviewed five
teachers in a program serving IY in juvenile halls and camps in a
metropolitan area. Data was coded to align with the KMO framework.
❧ Findings of the study indicate a need for increased knowledge and
motivation among teachers for the development of 21st Century
Skills. Further, the program chosen for research lacked an explicit
emphasis on 21st Century
Skills, focusing more on process than
concept. Implications for practice include: the adoption of a
framework for 21st Century
Skills; the provision of education and
training to administrators and teachers on the framework as well as
best practices for developing and assessing the
skills;
organizational emphasis on 21st Century
Skills; the incorporation
of 21st Century
Skills into accountability measures; and the
provision of necessary technology resources and other materials to
support the curriculum. ❧ Future evaluation avenues include pre-
and post-assessment of teacher efficacy after implementing
recommendations and a longitudinal study of employment
history/recidivism among former IY who attended the program. The
researcher also recommends studying the impact of the program on
student perceptions of employability and self-efficacy for
prosocial behaviors. A final suggested study is a comparison of
probation officers’ perceptions/behaviors at program and
non-program sites.

▼ With the sudden, rapid rise in the number of students diagnosed with special
needs, educators and administrators are developing ways to facilitate the development of interpersonal
skills and a deeper engagement with the curriculum. Implementing art education into district programs shows promising results in developing and fostering social and behavioral
skills in students, markedly in students with special
needs. This study specifically addresses the implementation of visual art lessons within a special day class serving kindergarten through third grade to scaffold student development of behavioral and social
skills. Parents, teachers, administrators and school staff must work to cultivate a collaborative culture and support the learning of each student.

▼ The consensus is clear: our schools and instructional methods are in desperate need of an update (Carnoy, 1998; Daggett, n.d.; Fullan, 2007; Keigel & Patler, 1991; Schwahn & McGarvey, 2011; and Wagner, 2008). In order for students to be globally competitive, school leaders need to identify what students need to know, what they need to be able to do, and what they need to be like to be successful post-graduation, and then change and adapt school practices to meet global
needs with an awareness of the 21st century learner. 21st century
skills development is necessary in order for students to compete globally (AMA, 2010; ASCD, 2008; Cookson, 2009; Friedman, 2007; Keigel & Patler, 2009; Levine, 2009; Partnership, 2010; Pink, 2006; and Schwahn & McGarvey, 2011). The purpose of this descriptive case study was to investigate a change process that incorporated the Partnership for 21st Century
Skills Framework for 21st Century Learning into curricula. I focused on the leaders' perceptions of the change process that allowed for 21st Century
Skills to become embedded into the curricula. I was interested in learning what needed to be changed and how the change occurred. The theoretical lens through which this case was studied and described is Adaptive Leadership Theory (Heifetz, 1994; Heifetz, R.A., Linsky, M., & Grashow, A., 2009; Glover, J., Jones, G., and Friedman, H., 2002a; Jones, Shannon, & Weigel, 2009), which can be defined as leadership that inspires and creates breakthroughs, accomplishes deep change, and develops the capability of the organization to survive, adapt, and thrive in complex, competitive, and challenging environments. Adaptive leadership recognizes that anyone, anywhere within the organization, can be a leader (Heifetz, 1994). Three overarching themes emerged: 1) Motivation for Change, and subsequent Student
Needs, 2) Mission, and 3) Collaboration.

▼ In today???s classrooms, time is a valuable commodity. Educator???s may often feel time in the classroom should be focused on core subjects like Language Arts and Mathematics. The idea of creating a lesson, making time to implement the lesson, and assessing for skill mastery, can be an overwhelming experience for teachers, causing them to forego social skill training in the classroom. For students receiving special education services who are lacking in appropriate social
skills, the impact of social skill deficits negatives affects academic progress.
The data utilized for this project was collected by teachers and school staff in two Sacramento area schools, one non-public school and one public school. The authors engaged staff at each site in conversations discussing the implementation of social skill training in the classroom. Analyzing staff responses in conjunction with research on social skill training, the authors determined a set of themes: 1) students receiving special education services require social skill training as much as they require academic interventions, 2) meeting the social and academic
needs of the students would be more easily accomplished with more time allotted to social skill training in the classroom, 3) implementing Common Core based curriculum in the classroom increases opportunities for student collaboration, and 4) a well-designed professional development with a concentration on combining social
skills with Common Core State Standards, can positively impact teacher ability to support students with special
needs.

▼ Educative Social Skills (ESS) is an integral concept of the field of Social Skills. The ESS are defined as those intentionally aimed at promoting development and learning of the interlocutor in the formal or informal situations. A repertoire drawn from ESS allows the teacher to use teaching strategies that facilitate interaction between learners, and it carries out activities that identify the expression of emotions and appropriate models of social behaviors, besides having the opportunity to build more adaptive behaviors of students as take initiative, cooperate with colleagues, giving feedback, fight for your rights, express feelings, to deny requests, empathize and others. The objective of this research was to determine which importance is given by teachers for social skills for working with students without or with special educational needs. The study gathered 60 teachers of Primary I and II of private schools in the state of Sao Paulo who answered a protocol for characterization and a questionnaire on Educative Social Skills in which to assess your grade on a scale of one to ten, assessing the importance they attach to each of the subclasses of ESS for their performance at work with students with or without special needs. All teachers considered the Class Monitor Positively as the most important of all. When teachers were divided into two groups: one that has or has had students with special educational needs and one that did not, those students with special needs consider Classes Set boundaries and Discipline more important than those without special educational needs pupils. And in this class, the subclasses Describe/justify undesirable behaviors and Behavior changes were considered more important for these teachers. For teachers who have students with special needs, the subclasses were evaluated as less important: Arrange the physical environment, Paraphrasing, Summarizing conduct issued; Stop behavior, Request information and express agreement. Since the subclasses that these teachers were considered more important: Arrange materials; Mediate interactions; Present goals, Establish relationships between antecedent and consequent behavior; Call to preestablished norms; Commend and encourage. This research has allowed the identification of key special educational needs reported that teachers reported are the most important for working with students without or with special educational needs. The high degree of importance that teachers attributed to the special educational needs suggests that the group participating in this research is sensitive to uncertainties in educational falling pupils with special needs and importance of the ESS for their performance in everyday situations at school. The identification of this information will enable future studies broaden this analysis to correlate teacher reports with the observations of their performance in the classroom.

The ever changing technology and heavy investment in ICTs has resulted in increased demand for various ICT skills. In the last few decades, numerous studies have attempted to address issues related to ICT skill needs. However, a lack of standard classification of ICT skills has made the research outcomes inconsistent and difficult to compare. The research reported in this thesis seeks to overcome this lack of consistency by using a standard skills framework (SFIA, Skills Framework for an Information Age) to establish the demand for ICT skills within New Zealand. This study is intended to benefit the education sector and industry training organisations in planning their educational programs to align the industry needs. The research findings can also benefit the economic development agencies in assessing and resolving the ICT skill needs within New Zealand.
A questionnaire survey was adopted as the research instrument. The aim of the survey was to identify the demand for various ICT skills by ascertaining the perceived value of those skills to organisations in both the short and longer term. In total, 590 questionnaires were distributed to the organisations, randomly selected from Kompass Database via Massey University’s website, with 100 or more employees nationwide. The total of 90 responses achieved a response rate of over 15%. With 16 not being considered due to the respondents being unable to answer the questions or incomplete questionnaires, 74 valid questionnaires were used in the analysis of the results. The research findings reveal that, in both the short and longer term, there is moderate to high demand for the majority of skills examined in this study. The top 3 skills that were rated as being the most valuable in both the short and longer term are “Managing the ICT function”, “Application support” and “IT operations, network operation & network support”. The 2 skills rated as being the least valuable in both timeframes are “Solution safety design and safety assessment” and “Marketing, sales & sales support”. The skills that are directly related to technological specialties are in higher demand in the short term than the non-technological knowledge/skills. However, the non-technological knowledge/skills are seen as being more important than the direct technological skills in the longer term.
This study did not address the supply side of ICT skills in the industry. Therefore, the demand measured by ratings of values cannot be used as an indication of skills shortage. It is recommended that a study on supply of the same skills (preferably using the same standard skills framework) will be beneficial as it identifies the areas of shortage that should be planned for.

▼ The implications of the rapid political, social,
economic and technological changes at present occurring both in
South Africa and internationally demand a review of the traditional
approach to university training with regard to its relevance in
terms of preparing students both for life in general and for the
successful practising of a future career in particular. The
Information Age requires that a shift take place from the teaching
only of the mastery
skills of previous eras to the encompassing of
life or core
skills that can be adapted to changing circumstances.
As it cannot be assumed that students will acquire these
skills
incidentally or vicariously, they need to be consciously and
deliberately taught in order to provide graduates with the ability
to adjust to and cope with the uncertainties of the future.
Universities as a whole need to become involved in an alternative
approach to higher education. The aims of this study
are: To employ a life-
skills questionnaire that
may be used as a diagnostic medium designed to ascertain if and
where problem areas lie with regard to university entrants so as to
facilitate addressing of said problem areas To
ascertain the
needs and expectations of both employers and private
practitioners in order to identify where the training of graduates
falls short of the above with respect to life
skills, and to
establish what steps both employers and the self-employed are
having to take to remedy the situation To
suggest the concept of relevant Guidance Support as a means to both
address and redress problems surrounding issues of insufficient
training of graduates with respect to life or core
skills.
The study comprises a title and concept
elucidation, methodological justification, formulation of the
problem and research hypotheses, an exposition of the aim of the
study and an outline of the programme. Perspective is gained on the
level of life
skills present in university entrants via the
presentation of a Life
Skills Questionnaire and its possible uses
are discussed. A survey of the
needs of both employers and the
self-employed, comprising a literature review, a Life
Skills
Questionnaire aimed at deans of faculties and councils and personal
or telephonic interviews, revealed that graduates are
insufficiently prepared to meet the demands of the world of work in
terms of life competencies and
skills. The concept of Guidance
Support, concomitant with the notion of establishing a guidance
support department is explored. The value of considering such a
concept is covered, followed by a discussion of the functions and
the advantages to a university of a guidance support department.
The study contains a number of recommendations with regard to
promoting the training of graduates sufficiently skilled to meet
the demands of the world of work.

▼ The aim of this study is to establish the impact of
mental retardation on family functioning. The researcher conducted
the research in the Waterberg district of the Limpopo province. The
lack of insight on the part of the family on how to cope with such
circumstances motivated the researcher to conduct the study. Most
families do not have the experience of caring for a mentally
handicapped member and therefore need information and support on
how to cope with the condition. The study is qualitative and
exploratory in nature. The research question was; “What is the
impact of mental retardation on family functioning”? A simple
random sampling was used in the study. The sample was selected from
all the registered children attending three different day- care
centres in the Waterberg district for the past three months prior
the investigation. Ten parents (one per household) of children with
mental retardation were interviewed using a semi structured
interview schedule. A phenomenological design was used and
participants’ experiences of family life and reactions to the
realization that they have a
child with mental retardation are
discussed. Data consisted of audio taped and written interviews.
The data collected was transcribed and analyzed according to
qualitative methods. The research findings show that mental
retardation has an impact on family functioning. Families had to
make new adjustments to accommodate the
child and his/her special
needs. The researcher recommends that service providers should
receive training on issues related to mental retardation so as to
provide the much needed services to these families. It was found
that the burden of caring, financial constraints, lack of community
support, the manner in which the disclosure was handled and the
lack of services, all had a negative impact on the
family.

ABSTRACT: ln order to finish the master degree in Management, specializing in Human Resources, a pertinent stage-based learning was considered as a way to improve technical and behavioral
skills. This stage had two targets: application of the obtained knowledge during the first stage of the master degree, and search for an opportunity of entering the labor market. This same stage was done at Caixa Geral Depósitos (CGD), a company that was chosen because of its prominent position assumed in Portugal, and is also considered a leading and strong organization in many areas, particularly human resource management. Despite the multiple approaches that human resources management has, and due to the know-how of CGD in this area, the stage was mainly focused in the training. It is considered that work in this area will bring many personal benefits as it will give me fundamental
skills to deal with the actual business reality, which is strongly marked in knowledge management.

▼ This research assessed a pilot implementation of START’s (STatewide Autism Resources and Training) peer-to-peer support program (LINKS) that occurred in three elementary schools (N = 36 participants). The purpose of the study was to teach social skills to students who have difficulty with social interactions and to enhance their social participation in inclusive classrooms. Mentors involved in this study had problem behaviours, and mentees involved had experienced social exclusion. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews determined the progress of students and the effectiveness of the overall program. Results revealed that mentors and mentees across the three schools displayed positive changes in their social skills and behaviours. The observations and post-interviews support the use of implementing a peer-to-peer program to assist students who have social challenges. Suggestions for future implementation are made based on the findings.

skills of children on the autism spectrum through the perspectives of parents and instructors. Data collection included pre- and post-camp questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that daily intensive exposure to drama and theatre can be a viable option to promote the development of social
skills among children on the autism spectrum. The activities seemed to promote particular gains in caregiver/peer interaction, adjusting to routines, eye contact, and social perceptions/cues. Additionally, results indicated that children with greater social communication
needs and those with more extensive exposure to the arts seemed to make stronger gains in social
skills. Finally, the results of this study suggest directions for future studies in the area of using theatre to develop social
skills, and highlight the importance of advocating for the inclusion of children on the autism spectrum in theatre programs.

▼ This research is directed at mothers of toddlers in
the Frankfort magisterial district. The objective of the study is
to determine whether mothers with toddlers display a need for
parental guidance. Data have been collected and a theoretical
framework has been constructed by means of a literature study and
communication with experts. An empirical study has been conducted
by involving forty-five mothers (respondents) of toddlers in the
Frankfort magisterial district. Scientific and technological
knowledge have been acquired by means of applied research. A
questionnaire, designed by the researcher, was used to collect
data. The following research question was posed: Does a need for
parental guidance exist amongst mothers with toddlers in the
Frankfort magisterial district? The conclusions and recommendations
of the study focus on achieving the objectives and aims. Once the
data had been analysed and processed, it became very clear that a
need for formal parental guidance does exist amongst mothers in the
Frankfort magisterial district. Mothers have indicated a need for
additional knowledge and information regarding the cognitive,
emotional, social and physical development of their toddlers in
order to selfpromote aspects of the development of toddlers.
Parental guidance modi are under-utilized, and mothers have
expressed that factors such as their geographical location, long
distances and the inaccessibility of formal parental guidance,
prevent them from utilizing parental guidance.

It is important to note, however, those criteria and talents create difficulties in the identification and recognition the educative measures to be applied to each situation.
Although the highly gifted children pupils have right to a differentiated and directed learning education, focused to their needs of the gifted are often misunderstood, are not usually a great concern on the part of the educative system and its intervening ones. The theoretical component of this thesis is centered in the giftedness ´concepts and the process of identification and the intervention of the educative system, according to these pupils. ▼ The purpose of the study was to identify the types of library services available in rural
areas of Thohoyandou in order to recommend appropriate library services to
disadvantaged children in rural areas of the Limpopo Province. Data were collected by
means of structured questionnaires in a survey. The problems experienced in rendering
library services to children, the factors influencing rural children's information use, and
the role that school libraries play in meeting the
needs of rural children were investigated.
The findings show that rural children's information
needs are primarily related to
homework assignments. Teachers and learners approach people for information rather
than making use of library resources for this purpose. This is due to the fact that most
rural schools do not have libraries. Materials are stored in classrooms and storerooms.
The existing book stock seems to be outdated, disorganised and inaccessible. Library
service rendering is neglected. Most teacher-librarians are not professionally trained to
render user services and to teach children information
skills. Teachers, teacher-librarians,
policy makers and administrators in rural schools seem to be indifferent to providing
these services to children.

The article analyzes skills of taking care
of themselves and aspects of independence of children with special
needs in their families and in an institution. The research showed,
the teachers trust the abilities of children more than their
parents do. Children with special needs are more independent in
doing simple chores such as using a mirror, using a handkerchief,
using flatware, washing their hands and faces. Meanwhile, difficult
chores such as combing their hair, using sanitary pads, cutting
their nails, washing their hair, taking care of their clothes and
footwear is more complicated to fulfill. Children feel more
independent taking off their clothes and shoes rather than putting
them on. Children with special needs face problem in understanding
the aim of these chores logically because of the lack of their
cognition powers. Besides, parents are eager to help their children
rather than to encourage them to be more independent in their
chores. The investigation studies the skills of taking care of
themselves of children with special needs in every day life,
including personal hygiene, eating, dressing and undressing, taking
care of personal clothes and footwear. The aim of the research is
to investigate how children with special needs acquire their
independence while taking care of themselves. The object of the
research is to investigate the expression of taking care of
themselves at home and in an institution. The task of the
investigation is to scrutinize the level of... [to full

įgūdžius.Tinkamų socialinių įgūdžių ugdymas – vienas efektingiausių
būdų gerinti vaikų prisitaikymą bendruomenėje, užkirsti kelią
konfliktams bei smurtui. Pagrindinis mūsų specialiosios mokyklos
uždavinys – rengti vaikus savarankiškam gyvenimui, siekti jų
sėkmingos socialinės adaptacijos ir integracijos visuomenėje. Mūsų
auklėtiniai nesavarankiški, nesugeba tiksliai veikti, bendrauti,

to the analyses of children who have disordered mental capacity;
however, empirical attitude towards development of social skills by

missing. Therefore, a research was organized in Ukmerge Special
