▼ Lampreys are one of the two jawless vertebrate groups in Agnatha. The adult’s life is shorter than the larval stage which is known as “ammocoete”. They are either in parasitic forms or non-parasitic forms. Parasitic adults attach to other species, rely on the blood or flesh of the hosts, and non-parasitic adults die after spawning. There is little historical data on lampreys because ammocoetes are filter feeders who are in the sediment, and captures of adults were all by chance. The objectives I achieved in this study were included: 1) Compiled all existing PA historical data (prior to 1990s) of lampreys and created database and distribution maps for each species; 2) Sampled historical sites for native lampreys in 2011 by using
backpack designed for ammocoetes, documented changes in lamprey communities at the watershed scale; 3) Conducted substrate sampling at sites where ammocoetes were present, analyzed substrate size preferred by ammocoetes; 4) Identified collections to species, compared the current data and historical data to see the presence and absence of native lamprey species and value the changes of distributions.
In Pennsylvania, 7 species were found historically. They are Lampetra aepyptera, Lampetra appendix, Ichthyomyzon bdellium, Ichthyomyzon fossor, Ichthyomyzon greeleyi, Ichthyomyzon unicuspis, Petromyzon marinus, among which I. fossor and I. unicuspis are endangered, and other species are in concern. In 2011, 21 streams were inspected, 18 creeks were sampled by using an ammocoete
backpack shocker designed in Dr. Stauffer’s lab, and 4 species- Lampetra aepyptera, Lampetra appendix, Ichthyomyzon greeleyi and Petromyzon marinus were found in 14 creeks statewide. Lampreys were extinct at some sites because of flow regulation, channelization, poor water quality, and chemical treatments. In tributaries of Lake Erie, Sea Lamprey treatment might be a major reason to the population declining of other native species. Substrate size and water velocity are the most important factors determine the presence and absence of larval lampreys, so substrate samples were collected at 5 sites where ammocoetes were present. Differences on size of the sediments were found between lamprey spots and non-lamprey spots. Ammocoetes prefer smaller sized substrate with particle diameter less than 0.25mm in shallow, warm waters with dissolved organic matter. This study elaborated the current status of different larval lamprey species and indicated that their distributional range is shrinking and there might be a declining trend of native lamprey species although abundance survey was not implemented.

▼ Participants were twelve 70+ kg male strength-trained athletes and one passenger child with a mass of 29 kg. The male participants walked three times over a force plate embedded in an eight metre walkway for each of three conditions: carrying no load, a 29 kg
backpack, or a 29 kg passenger.
Variables were compared using a repeated measures ANOVA test with a Bonferroni correction. Both load conditions produced compensatory trunk flexion; trunk flexion increased from no load to piggybacking to backpacking. Trunk range of motion was similar for no load and piggybacking, but increased to backpacking. The
backpack load caused greater resultant and total magnitude of torque than the passenger load. The trunk extensors dominated with no load and piggybacking and the trunk flexors dominated with backpacking. Many of the significant differences between conditions suggest that piggybacking is biomechanically more similar to natural gait than is backpacking.

▼ From the first idea, to research and comparing with other backpacks with foldable function (tele, usárna), and with backpacks associated with urban and streetwear function, I designed a
backpack with a practical and functional design which opens questions of personal vs. public space. It plays with the question of lifestyle as a focal point of marketing. It speaks to young people, who spend their time in the city public space and occupy it in their own way. Technical parameters of the
backpack are dependent of its functional needs, but the first idea came out of the needs of a modern young nomad, exploring the city public space.

▼ Natural resource managers make decisions based on the analyses of fish sample data; hence it is imperative to use unbiased data with low variance. The ability to capture fishes (capture efficiency) varies among methods and site- and
species-characteristics. Failure to account for capture efficiency can bias sample data. High variance also influences data quality and can obfuscate important relationships and population trends. I evaluated two commonly-used fish sampling protocols in
31 streams the Upper Coosa Basin, Georgia, modeled fish capture efficiency, and evaluated the sources of sample variance. Capture efficiency was low and varied among species, between methods, and was related to stream habitat characteristics. I also
estimated fish movement out of unblocked sample units during sampling and calculated unconditional capture efficiency. Failure to account for incomplete capture of fish introduces bias and variance in sampling data and may lead to poor inference,
particularly for at-risk fishes.

▼ The National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) uses a
backpack system as a form of load carriage in the Self Contained Atmospheric Protective Ensemble (SCAPE) suits. SCAPE suits, which are completely enclosed suits, are required in areas where fuel and an oxidizer are present and can spontaneously ignite on contact (hypergolic atmospheres). Inside the SCAPE suit, a person wears a "
backpack", which consists of a 40 pound environmental control unit (ECU) attached to a "
backpack" harness. Interviews was conducted with current and former SCAPE employees to identify the body positions assumed while performing common tasks during a SCAPE operation, and to explore issues of discomfort while wearing the harness. The purpose of this research has been to develop and evaluate a new harness by comparing it with the current NASA harness in terms of biomechanical loading and subjective assessment.
A Kelty® Sierra Crest M'S external framed pack was chosen as the harness to modify, because it featured many components that are important to a supportive pack, including an external frame, a padded hip belt, load lifter straps, padded shoulder straps, and an adjustable harness for varied torso lengths. In addition to this basic design, lateral stiffness rods were added to the harness to help transfer the load from the shoulders to the hips.
To test the biomechanical effects of the NASA harness and the new harness on the body, the muscle activity of the trapezius, erector spinae, and rectus abdominus muscles were recorded using surface electromyography (EMG). While wearing each harness, subjects were required to position their torso in four different forward flexion angles, 15, 30, 45, and 60 degrees, while EMG was recorded. The subjects were also asked to fill out subjective surveys based on the comfort level of the shoulders and low back for each harness.
The results for the trapezius muscles showed that there was a significant effect of the interaction of harness type and forward flexion angle on these muscles. The normalized EMG for the trapezius muscles showed there was a 14% and 11% reduction in muscle activity at 15 and 30 degrees, respectively, with the new harness compared to the NASA harness. The results for the erector spinae muscles showed that there was a significant effect of forward flexion angle and the interaction of harness type and forward flexion angle on the these muscles. The normalized EMG for the erector spinae muscles showed there was a 24% and 14% reduction in muscle activity at 15 and 30 degrees, respectively, with the new harness compared to the NASA harness. The rectus adominus muscles did have a significant effect of forward flexion angle, although there was not a distinguishable difference in muscle activity between the new harness and the NASA harness.
The subjective surveys agreed with the EMG results, which showed the new harness was more comfortable with respect to the shoulder and low back areas, as well as overall comfort than the NASA harness. Using…

▼ The aim of this project was to develop a product in cooperation with Primus Company in Stockholm. It consisted of designing a container with the items needed when cooking and eating outdoors, in order to help the users eat and cook in a proper way while practicing activities such as camping or hiking. Considering the specifications posed by Primus, research was done. One of the main issues to start this research was to carry out a market analysis in order to know all the products similar to the one that was going to be developed. Then, an analysis of the company and the main competitors of it was done in order to develop a product with Primus style and to get ideas for the product. In addition, a questionnaire study directed to potential users was carried out. In this way, it was possible to get to know things such as which items people usually carry in their backpack for cooking and eating outdoors and which ones they considered essential. This helped with making a choice of what the product should contain. Once all the information collected from the research and from the study of the specifications was prioritized, the concept development phase started. For reaching an outcome, many aspects such as the items that the container should include, the shape of the container and the best material for the product were discussed. Primus TetraCube is a product that suits all the requirements established at the beginning. In this way, Primus TetraCube is a product that can be carried in an 80 litres backpack and where the user can store all the necessary items for four people who want to eat and cook outdoors. It has also been designed taking into consideration all the details, resulting in a product that follows the aesthetics of Primus with soft shapes and colours such as red, black and grey. Everything combined make Primus TetraCube a comfortable product which helps the user feel at home in terms of convenience and comfort.

▼ Wearable robots including exoskeletons, powered
prosthetics, and powered orthotics must add energy to the person at
an appropriate time to enhance, augment, or supplement human
performance. Adding energy while not being in sync with the user
can dramatically hurt performance making it necessary to have
correct timing with the user. Many human tasks such as walking,
running, and hopping are repeating or cyclic tasks and a robot can
add energy in sync with the repeating pattern for assistance. A
method has been developed to add energy at the appropriate time to
the repeating limit cycle based on a phase oscillator. The phase
oscillator eliminates time from the forcing function which is based
purely on the motion of the user. This approach has been simulated,
implemented and tested in a robotic backpack which facilitates
carrying heavy loads. The device oscillates the load of the
backpack, based on the motion of the user, in order to add energy
at the correct time and thus reduce the amount of energy required
for walking with a heavy load. Models were developed in Working
Model 2-D, a dynamics simulation software, in conjunction with
MATLAB to verify theory and test control methods. The control
system developed is robust and has successfully operated on a range
of different users, each with their own different and distinct
gait. The results of experimental testing validated the
corresponding models.

▼ Teachers and scholars have long discussed the advantages of conducting home visits to discover funds of knowledge present in households as way to better understand and better communicate with their students in order to strengthen academic progress and learning. In Saudi Arabia, there exists a large gap between the societal needs and what and how curriculum is being taught in schools. The system lacks an effective way to integrate students’ funds of knowledge with what is taught in the classroom.
The purpose of this study is to understand how home visits can be beneficial to the instructor and to the learner in the classroom based on the studies conducted in Moll, Amanti, and Gonzalez in Funds of Knowledge and in my study, Exploring The Funds of Knowledge in Muslim Immigrant Families. In addition, the study aims to show how Saudi Arabia can implement and benefit from the use of home visits. This study took place in Tucson, Arizona in the homes of three Muslim immigrant families whose children attend Al fajir Islamic School. I worked with 3 families from Egypt, Pakistan, and Somalia, all who had first/second graders attending Al Fajir Islamic School. The general approach in this research design is qualitative and includes observations, ethnographic data collection strategies, and interviews. Each family participated in three or four home visits. Each home visit lasted up to three hours. The data collected from the home visits included my field notes, the audiotapes of the interview questions and responses, and transcriptions from taping. Analysis indicated that the value of education, the significance of family relationships, maintenance of maternal tongue, deference to other cultures, and the continuation of religious practices were all fundamental components of the Muslim immigrants’ funds of knowledge. I learned that they were all rooted in the religion of Islam. In conclusion, the use of the home visit proves highly effective in the discovery of funds of knowledge of students. It is recommended, in order to bridge the gap in education between societal expectations and actuality in the classroom, that the technique of home visits be implemented.

▼ In society, personal load carriage systems (backpacks) are commonly used to transport loads by foot, however, they have also been implicated in causing injuries. The aim of this study was to develop a model for load carriage which could be used to determine safety limits in humans. To start, a number of experiments were conducted to determine the appropriateness of using pressure mapping technology to measure peak and mean pressures acting on humans during load carriage limits. Tests of accuracy and repeatability were performed using three common pressure mapping technologies: capacitance, piezoresistive and resistive ink. Pressure mapping was tested statically and dynamically on a human-like flat surface, as well as on human shoulder-shaped model. Error was found to be ≥ 20% on static flat and curved surfaces and it rose to 36-51% under dynamic conditions. Since pressure mapping would require significant modifications before it could be used to study human load carriage, a psychophysical approach was used instead. For this approach, an epidemiological study of pain was conducted based on 48 subjects who used multiple backpack designs to complete occupationally relevant tasks. As a result, pain trends and new methods of data analysis were identified that had potential use on human trials. In a final study, pain mapping, quantification of pain intensity, and physiological/motor testing were conducted on humans performing endurance exercise with light to heavy payloads. Results showed that all subjects were able to exercise with a 15-35 kg payload for 45 minutes and with a 50 kg payload for 30 minutes, without stopping. As well, pain was found to be highest in the anterior acromial (shoulder) region, particularly for the 50 kg payload (mean peak pain = 3.4/10). Based on these findings, two models were proposed: an assertive model and a conservative model to allow prediction of human load carriage limits for endurance exercise.

▼ Over 40 million students in the United States use a
backpack to carry items to and from school everyday as it is designed to hold different objects in an organized manner. However, the load of children’s backpacks has caused debate over the recent years. Whether the problem is thought to be related to the belief that textbooks are too large for children to carry or the backpacks are loaded and carried incorrectly, the consensus is that there is a definite safety issue present and a need to be proactive in providing recommendations before severe health issues present themselves. The purpose of the planned research is to use electromyography (EMG), posture evaluation, heart rate, and ratings of perceived exertion and perceptions of pain to find an acceptable
backpack load limit. These experiments will help narrow the acceptable load limit by providing additional analysis to the current literature on
backpack loads and children. The study will also explore the possible differences between a
backpack with many ergonomic features and a more generic
backpack with only a couple ergonomic features. It may be that the type of
backpack used is more of a problem than the actual load.
Twenty middle school students aged 11 to 14 (10 female and 10 male) volunteered for the study. Two backpacks were used in the study: one with standard comfort features and one with ergonomic features. The subjects completed two tests: standing stationary and walking on a treadmill. For both tests, the subjects first had two trials without any load (0%) then two trials with each of the two backpacks at loads of 10, 15, and 20% of the subject’s body weight (BW). EMG activity of the trapezius, latissimus dorsi, and erector spinae was collected using triode surface electrodes while the subjects stood for 3 min. For the walking trials, the subjects walked on a treadmill at 2.41 km/hr for 3 min. In both tests, every 1 min the subjects were asked to give a Borg-RPE and their heart rate. The subjects were also asked to rate the pain they felt in their shoulders, middle back, lower back, and whole body using the Borg CR10 Scale of Perceived Pain.
The study was conducted to gather more evidence on the vital problem of children carrying backpacks that may cause long-term harm, and to attempt to support one load limit over the other. The possibility of needing to adjust the Borg RPE-Scale for the study age was also explored. The research indicated that: (1) The CR10 ratings and trunk forward lean for the walking trial indicated a possible load limit of 10% BW due to the significant difference between 10 and 15% BW. (2) There was no significant difference between backpacks, concluding that the best
backpack may just be a matter of personal choice. (3)The data was inconclusive on whether the RPE-Scale should be adjusted for children. Further studies on various dynamic activities should be explored.
Future research should be conducted to include factors such as testing actual
backpack mass instead of %BW, using BMI to group subjects, more subjects for each age,…

▼ Backpacks are used by more than 90% of schoolchildren worldwide and over 40 million students in the United States on a regular basis. The carriage of loaded backpacks is associated with kinematic and physiological changes, as well as complaints of neck and back pain. Since a history of backpain in childhood is the strongest predictor of having musculoskeletal discomfort and back pain as an adult, development of back pain due to
backpack use is of prognostic concern. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the effects of
backpack weights (up to 20% body weight (BW)) on children’s posture, subjective complaints of pain and perceived exertion, and walking endurance. A secondary goal was to examine the data to identify and recommend a weight limit for backpacks carried by elementary school children based on the results. In Chapter 2, we performed a preliminary study designed to examine the effects of loaded backpacks on forward head posture in school children. The results of this study found that forward head posture increased with both
backpack weight and condition. The greatest differences were noted at the 15% and 20%BW
backpack loads with initial loading, but after 6 minutes of walking the forward head posture was similar for all
backpack loads. In Chapter 3, we conducted a study to evaluate multiple postural angles and the subjective complaints of pain and perceived exertion/fatigue in children to determine the effects of both the weight and time spent carrying loaded backpacks up to 20%BW. Subjects showed significant changes in all measures including the Six Minute Walk Test (6MWT), OMNI Walk/Run Scale of perceived exertion/fatigue and subjective complaints of pain, as well as the postural angles of Craniovertebral Angle, Forward Trunk Lean, and Pelvic Tilt. Subjects demonstrated immediate and significant changes in forward head posture, forward trunk lean, and pelvic tilt while wearing backpacks weighing 10%, 15% and 20%BW, but the 10%BW
backpack resulted in the least amount of change. This study also found that these postural angles changed additionally after walking 6 minutes while carrying the loaded backpacks. Subjects also demonstrated decreased 6MWT distances and increased reports of perceived exertion and pain after carrying backpacks weighing 10%, 15% and 20%BW. In Chapter 4, we discussed the clinical implications of this research. It was determined that
backpack loads weighing 10%, 15% and 20%BW of a child’s body weight result in immediate changes in posture, which continue to increase after walking six minutes with the loaded
backpack. The
backpack loads significantly impacted the children’s walking endurance as well as their reports of perceived exertion/fatigue and regional pain. This study found that of the loads tested, the 10%BW resulted in the least amount of change in all outcome measures. However, the 10%BW load was not innocuous, as it still created significant changes in posture and subjective complaints.
Backpack weight limit guidelines need to be written to protect children from…

▼ This article focuses on the distribution of backpack pressure on human body. We have noticed two interesting situations: whether the length of different backpack shoulder straps will change the pressure distribution of the backpack on the human body and whether different positions of the backpack load will change the pressure distribution of the backpack on the human body. To find the answer, we designed a backpack pressure detection system to collect data and use engineering software to analyse the data.We got the range that best fits the human body and the healthiest backpack: when the distance from the top of the backpack to the shoulder is about 1/5 of the length of the shoulder and the weight of the backpack is at the bottom of the backpack. At this time, the force of the three parts of the human body (shoulders, back) is the most uniform and relatively minimal. If the user wants to minimize the pressure on the shoulder, the shoulder strap of the backpack should be as short as possible. If the user only wants the pressure on the back to be minimal, the weight in the backpack is closer to the back, which is better for the back.

▼ Over 40 million students in the U.S. use backpacks regularly. Backpacks lead to poor posture due to the posterior placement of the load, which overtime may contribute to low back pain and musculoskeletal complications. This study examined postural and load distribution differences between a traditional
backpack (BP) and a nontraditional
backpack (BTP) in a young adult population. Using a 3D motion analysis system, 24 healthy young adults (22.5±2.5 years, 12 male) completed both static stance and walking trials on a treadmill with no load and with 15% and 25% of their body weight using the two different backpacks. There was a significant difference in trunk angle, head angle, and lower extremity joint mechanics between the
backpack and load conditions during walking (p<.05). There was also a significant difference in head angle from pre- to post-walk (p<.05). Taken together, the results indicate that the BTP more closely resembled the participants’ natural stance and gait patterns as determined by the No Load condition. The more upright posture supported by the BTP may help reduce characteristics of poor posture and ideally help to reduce low back pain while carrying loads.

▼ Wearable and mobile devices are an important part of our daily life. Most of those devices are powered by batteries. The limited life span of batteries constitutes a limitation, especially in a multiple-day expedition, where electrical power can not access conveniently. At the same time, there is a huge amount of energy stored in the human body. While walking, there is a large amount of power dissipated in the human body as negative muscle work and the energy loss by impact. By sourcing locally and using locally, human body energy harvesting is a promising solution. This dissertation focuses on harvesting energy from the human body to power wearable and mobile devices while poses a minimum burden on the human body. Three topics related to the human body energy harvesting are explored, i.e, energy harvesting
backpack, negative muscle work harvester, and energy harvesting tile/paver. The energy harvesting
backpack was invented in 2006. Extensive work was done to improve the performance of
backpack energy harvester. The
backpack is modeled as a spring-mass-damper system. Extensive work have been done to make the energy harvesting
backpack broad frequency bandwidth. The negative work harvester mounts on the human ankle and harvests energy in the terminal stance phase in human walking. This harvester is an analogy to regenerative brake in vehicles. The energy harvesting paver/tile harvests energy when the heel contacts with ground and energy are dissipated by impact.

▼ Heavy backpacks have been suggested to have a pathogenic role in experience of low back pain among children. We have conducted a repeated-measure study to investigate the backpack-induced changes in lumbo-pelvic coordination of forty gender-balanced college age students when they walked and jogged on a treadmill with two different types of backpacks: normal and ergonomically modified. The backpack-induced changes in lumbo-pelvic coordination were larger when carrying an ergonomically modified vs. a normal backpack as well as when jogging versus walking. The larger changes in lumbo-pelvic coordination when carrying an ergonomically modified backpack were likely due to kinematic restraints imposed by rigidity and enhanced attachments devised in the backpack for increased comfort. Given the role of lower back biomechanics in low back pain, the effects of such larger mechanical abnormalities in the lower back when carrying an ergonomically-modified backpack on risk of low back pain among children requires further investigation.

▼ Marching while carrying a backpack load is the most common activity in thearmy so being able to endure such a task is required of all military personnel. It is apredictable source of common injuries. Lower limb injuries in particular are caused notonly by the extra load but also by the type of surface on which the soldier marches. Theobjective of this study was thus to expand on the current knowledge of the biomechanicaleffects of loads by investigating lower limb gait parameters on a sand surface whilecarrying a military backpack.Twenty healthy male participants were recruited from among students at theUniversity of Utah who fit the current U. S. military recruitment criteria. The independentvariables controlled were the surface type (i.e. hard and sand), slope (i.e. flat and slant),backpack type (i.e. no load, MOLLE, and ALICE), and marching speed (i.e. self-selectedand 4 km/h). Data acquisition was performed using 16 NaturalPoint cameras, AMASSsoftware, and 4 force plates.Over all, it was observed that a decrease in cadence, a decrease in stride length, and an increase in double support time occurred as load was added. In terms of the effectsof slope, an increase in double support time and a decrease in stride width were found tooccur on the slanted surface as compared to the flat surface. As for the effects of surfacetype, a decrease in cadence, double support time, and stride length was observed on thesand surface as compared to the hard surface. There was also found to be a generalivincrease in ankle dorsiflexion/plantarflexion, knee flexion/extension, and hipabduction/adduction RoM (Range of Motion) angle on the sand surface as compared tothe hard surface. On the whole, walking on a sand surface thus increased M/L GRF,increased vertical impact force, decreased vertical thrust force, and increased kneeabduction/adduction moment. No difference was detected between the MOLLE and ALICE backpacks in termsof resulting cadence, double support time, and stride length. However, a statisticallysignificant increase in stride width was observed with the MOLLE as compared to theALICE pack. The MOLLE also influenced a statistically significant increase in hipabduction/adduction RoM angle as compared to the ALICE. The ALICE backpack inturn resulted in increased hip A/A moment and higher braking/propulsive forces.Although all of these differences were statistically significant, they are not substantialenough to be considered practically meaningful. From the findings of this research, it is recommended that military training andgeneral operations be minimized in sand environments in order to reduce the injurypotentials discussed above. In unforeseen or unavoidable cases where exposure to suchterrain is prolonged, reducing overall load thus needs to be considered to reduce injurypotential.

▼ Education production and, more generally, human capital production, is a significant driver of economic well-being both locally and nationally. This research informs policy decisions regarding how educational inputs are utilized and how those inputs can be influenced by the private sector. This dissertation, “Education Production: Teacher Evaluation Models and Weekend Feeding Programs,” is comprised of three chapters. The first addresses the rising issue in education policy of the measurement of student-test-based teacher evaluation. The second examines the scholastic effects of the relatively recent emergence of weekend feeding programs. The third uses the emergence and spread of the same weekend feeding programs to understand the factors affecting the adoption of new charitable programs.
Chapter 1 identifies and explains key differences between the two leading models used in evaluating teachers based on student standardized test scores. Historically, teacher evaluation has been based heavily on subjective measures of assessment. While few policy makers suggest these subjective measures of teacher quality should be discarded, all states now at least recommend the use of objective measures of teacher performance based on student test scores. The two most prominent statistical models of teacher effects, Value Added Models (VAM) and Student Growth Percentile (SGP) models, while conceptually similar, differ in estimation method and can lead to sizable differences in estimated teacher effects. Using a simulation, I evaluate the relationship under clean and controllable conditions. I then verify that the results persist in observed student-teacher data from North Carolina. The two models disagree regarding estimated teacher effects when the classroom distribution of test scores conditional on prior achievement is skewed (i.e. when a teacher serves a disproportionate number of high- or low- growth students). Moreover, the magnitude of skewness needed to drive these models apart by three or more deciles is within the ranges observed in the data. As such, a teacher who appears weak in one model may appear strong when evaluated by the other, yet typically only a single model is used. To further the effective use of these objective evaluation methods in high-stakes decisions such as payment, retention, and tenure, a complete understanding of their differences is vital.
Chapter 2 examines how weekend feeding programs affect both educational and behavioral outcomes. Weekend feeding programs provide weekend food to students who otherwise may have limited access to nutritious food between their free school lunch on Friday and free breakfast at school on Monday. In particular, I focus on the
BackPack program (a national program through the Feeding America food bank) in Northwestern North Carolina. This is the first economic study to examine the effects of weekend feeding programs on standardized test scores, attendance, or behavioral incidents. I compile a unique data set of program enrollment at each participating…

The data of children's preventive health
checks show that the most health problems of children are in visual
and muscular–skeletal systems. According to public health experts
(Kaušylienė R., 2008) nearly a quarter of children have poor
posture, tenth – have spinal curvature. HK Daniel et al. (2005)
recommend that the backpack weight must be limited to 10.0–15.0
percent of body weight, because more weight causes significant
changes in physical performance. SN Forjuoh et al. (2003) research
work conclusions show that elementary school children’s backpack
weight averagely 8.2 percent of student’s body weight, bet it
increases significantly with the increasing grade level. This leads
to the relevance of our investigation. The object of investigation:
Primary school children’s posture and its interface with the weight

prejudiciais.
ABSTRACT - Introduction: Backpack loads produce changes in the standing posture compared with posture without loads. There is little evidence as to whether exposure to later load produces harmful effects on bone tissue. Objective: Analyze the effects of school backpack loads on posture and balance. Sample: Convenience sample consisting on 19 healthy subjects, of both genders, from two classes of 8th grade, aged between 13 and 15 years. Methodology: Quasi-experimental and analytical study. The assessment instruments used were the FRT and PAS, which evaluated the changes in postural angles and changes of balance in the standing position, with variations of weight: without load, 5%, 10% and 15% of body weight in the children´s backpacks. Statistical procedures: Descriptive (measures of central location) for sample characterization and inferential statistic to identify relations between variables,
with Parametric tests and Pearson´s coefficients. Results / Discussion: The increase of percentage of weight in the school backpack led to a decrease in the performance of the Functional Reach Test and also the cranial-spinal, the cranial-cervical and dorsal angles decreased as we increased the load. The cranial-cervical dorsal and lumbar angles slightly increased as we increased the percentage of load in the backpack. There were more changes in balance and…

▼ With the popularity of outdoor activities like hiking, the demands of certain types of employment, or being a student, an individual’s ability to carry a load is an important mobility consideration. By understanding the changes to an individual’s gait when supporting a backpack load, an individual’s ability to carry heavy loads for prolonged periods could be improved. Most biomechanical studies have examined the changes in able-bodied gait when carrying a load. However, research is lacking on the effect of backpack loads on amputee gait patterns. This project examined the effects of a backpack load on the gait patterns of unilateral transtibial amputees. Ten participants performed walking trials on four surfaces (level ground, uneven ground, walking up an incline, and walking down an incline), without a pack and with a pack. A total of 40 trials were collected per subject, with 10 trials collected on each surface. Three-dimensional motion data were collected with an eight-camera Vicon Motion Analysis system to describe limb motion as well as compare kinematic outcomes between tasks and conditions. Force platform data were collected during the level ground trials and used to calculate kinetic measures for both limbs. With the addition of the pack changes were seen on each surface, with different changes occurring to each limb. The ramp up surface created the most changes when comparing the two conditions. The only change seen across all four surfaces was a decrease in ankle dorsiflexion before push-off on the prosthetic limb. The two next most common changes were increases in knee and hip flexion during weight-acceptance.

▼ Today, backpacks and duffel bags are often designed with a focus on a specific area of use, which makes it difficult to use them on other occasions. A clear example where the differences are noticeable is between functional mountaineer bags and urban bags. It is not uncommon for people staying in these environments to have far beyond two bags in their possession. Overconsumption is harmful to the environment, especially when it is from an industry that is pursued with poor working conditions and dangerous emissions in nature. Therefore, multifunctionality and sustainable design have been of high priority when the products in this project were developed. In this thesis, two models of bags have been developed through a human-centered design process. A large number of user interviews and expert interviews, as well as a focus group, laid the foundation for the requirements and needs of the bags. Spektrum’s company values, as well as the identity of their current products, were interpreted to create brand recognition in the new products. Idea generation was performed through various creative sessions, prototyping, and through a workshop. Evaluation and concept selection was performed by representatives from the target group in the form of personas, as well as by Spektrum. Finally, detailed technical drawings of the concepts were created in Adobe Illustrator. The first model is a backpack designed to work just as well on the mountain as in the city. The other model is a duffel bag that can be carried both on the back and in the hand. It is also designed to perform well in both mountain and urban environments. Both bags are made of polyester from recycled PET bottles and the material is controlled and approved by the highly rated environmental certification bluesign®. The metal parts of the bags are made of recycled aluminum. Both models are adjustable to fit all users within the 5th to 95th percentile. The thesis resulted in the ordering of two alpha prototypes of each model, factory-made by my technical drawings. According to Spektrum, the designs have created great interest among retailers and company shareholders. Both models will, therefore, be put into production and released to the market within two years.

▼ The overall aim of this research project was to develop a methodology for the development and evaluation of an energy storage and return (ESAR) system, specifically dynamic rods (DR), for insertion into a typical backpack. The criteria for a successful ESAR were to reduce the relative pack vertical displacement at a delayed phase of the gait cycle thus reducing the force demands on the body. The first objective of this research project was to investigate the effectiveness of the DR across different loads and dynamic conditions. The approach involved the use of two types of load carriage evaluation tools: (1) a computational dynamic biomechanical model (DBM) and (2) a physical Load Carriage Simulator (LCS). The secondary objective was to examine the efficacy of this methodology and determine if the DR design concept met the ESAR criteria in both the DBM and LCS. The results demonstrated that, even though the DR had a marginal effect on the relative z-displacement of the pack and z-forces experienced at the waist and hips for the DBM, similar results were not observed in the LCS trials. There was also no phase shift of the backpack observed in either evaluation tool. This, along with the displacement and force data, suggested that the current DR design did not meet the criteria for an ESAR load carriage device. Finally, the comparison of key variables between the DBM and LCS demonstrated that the LCS could not be used to validate the DBM. Despite the limitations of this study, it has provided a starting point toward developing a standardized protocol for the design and development of novel load carriage systems. A supplemental study demonstrated that increased tension of the DR straps resulted in a reduction of shoulder strap forces because the DR acted as a bridge in the mechanical system, transferring some of the forces from the shoulders to the hip belt (pelvis). Therefore, this DR concept should be considered in the design of LC devices as the reduction of shoulder forces during load carriage is an area of concern.

Loadings are common tasks for children, teenagers and adults once daily, they have to
carry bags, personal objects, and books for workplaces or schools. Several authors point
out that the weight loads during material loadings is the main cause for the onset of low
back pain. Thus it is important to study this subject in order to define recommendations
and establish limits for these tasks. The main objectives of the present study was the
characterization of the problems associated with the use of backpacks and the
determination of the Maximum Acceptable Weight ( MAW ) and the Index of Perceived
Exertion ( IPE ) for the task of carrying backpacks. A…

▼ Military load carrying has occupied the attention of military developers, researchers and commanders over centuries. The Army
backpack remains the means of carriage for ammunition and rations for the soldier in the field. The traditional rationale for its use has been that the infantry soldier must be able to sustain himself in combat and live independently for days at a time without resupply. At the Royal Military College, Duntroon (RMC), the mission is to produce men and women who are capable and effective officers and soldiers. The weight of the pack with the items required at RMC is often in excess of 40 kg. In evaluating the effectiveness of current practice, this thesis takes an anthropometric perspective in exploring the historical, physiological and social context of current loads carried by Australian soldiers, It does not, however, evaluate the content of the load itself. Research methods include: a/. Systematic examination of past research findings on the social and physiological aspects of military load carrying since the Roman Centurions. b/. Biophysical tesing of nine soldiers, using a battery of physiological tests to determine heart rates and energy expenditure at various loads. c/. A survey of 100 soldiers from the Royal Military College, Duntroon and in-depth interviews with a sample of four experienced soldiers to obtain the views of the load carriers. The research concludes that the optimum approach to load carrying, and so to the design of the Army
backpack, is that it be task-and soldier-specific. This runs directly counter to the longstanding Army traditions of preparing all soldiers for every possible contingency in battle and regarding all soldiers as equivalent units. The study findings offer some specific directions in which the design of the army
backpack can be improved.

▼ Today focus on the environemnt is bigger than ever before. UN writes in their climate agenda that they by 2030want to cut the food waste per capita in half. There are strict regulations today regarding how food needs to betransported and stored, but as soon as the consument takes, for example, milk from the frigde at a store there areonly a few guidelines about how the product should be stored. If a chilled or frozen product is not kept insidethe range of the given temperature, a microbilogical growth will begin. This leads to that the food goes bad or,in worst case, that the consumer gets poisoned. There is a change happening today in how the consumers shoptheir food and more focus is layed upon the customer to handle their grocery shopping by themselves. This project focuses on developing a solution that will help the consumer to keep their food at the right temperatureduring an extended period of time. The project is carried out in Stockholm during 20 weeks in collaborationwith IKEA of Sweden in Älmhult. The target group in this project is IKEA’s broad customer group. With help from a Human Centered Design process this project goes through the three phases; inspiration, ideation and implementation. The project has been formed with interaction through workshops with differentexternal actors like users and focus groups. The ideation resulted in four simpler concepts that verged in to twothrough external decision making with supervisors from IKEA of Sweden. During the project, the prototypeshave been used together with users to evaluate the usability of the concepts. The result consists of two concepts; Behålla and Blåsa, that are aimed to meet two different users that hasbeen identified through surveys and interviews. Behålla is a smaller product that is target towards the user thatbrings food with them to work or school, also to those who buys less groceries at the store. Blåsa is, in contrastto Behålla, a bigger product that is targeted towards the customers that buys a bigger set of chilled and frozengroceries. Additionally four color variations has been created to offer IKEA alternative executions. These conceptsare visualized with renderings through Adobe Illustratior. With these concepts IKEA can enlarge theirsustainability profile and offer their customers two new products to keep their chilled and frozen foods cold.
