▼ This project presents the design of a theatre. The
theatre site is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia and will serve as
the home for the Legacy Centre for the Performing arts. A selection
of theatre spaces and ritual spaces, including temples and churches
are analyzed, with attention paid to performance theory research in
order to interpret the shared activities within these two building
types. Architectural connections between these spaces are made as
well as a building language common to both. A collection of theatre
buildings, including the design for the Legacy Centre, is produced.
Each design exhibits the line between front of
house and backstage
that has been established as being similar to both theatres and
ritual spaces and that will enhance the experience of going to the
theatre.

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the utilization of Front of House and Back of House technology applications by U.S. restaurants across different types of restaurants along with their level of IT management style, and the importance of these technology applications to the restaurants' operations. This study used secondary data. The survey data collected from 500 randomly selected restaurant technology managers who are current subscribers of Hospitality Technology Magazine as of January 2013. Response rate was 27.2% and these sample groups represented 67,299 restaurant units. The data analysis was organized into 3 parts (descriptive, factor analysis and independent samples t-test). In the descriptive part of the data analysis, the information about respondents' job functions, company characteristics and companies' IT perspectives are evaluated. In the second part, factor analysis was used. Since the factor analysis is a data reduction technique, factor analysis is used to create correlated variable composites and to reduce variables for better interpretation. The third and final stage of the data analysis included testing hypotheses based on factor analysis outcomes by using an independent samples t-test. The main purpose of using an independent samples t-test is to determine whether position (IT versus Non-IT), types of restaurant (Chain versus Independent), business leadership and technology leadership (Innovator versus Follower) differ on the factor attributes.

ASSISTING CHINESE
HOUSE CHURCHES TO BECOME
GREAT COMMISSION CHURCHES
Name Withheld, Ph.D.
The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2012
Chairperson: Dr. George H. Martin
The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a training proposal that will assist the Chinese
house churches in developing a plan to address their missiological weaknesses and become Great Commission churches. The thesis of this dissertation is that the majority of Chinese
house churches are not Great Commission churches. Chapter 1 will give an overview of the project, which includes the methodology used.
Chapter 2 describes the origin of the
house church in China, with special attention being given to the historical and political factors that shaped it. With this background information in place, the reader will be better able to understand the modern day situation of the Chinese
house church.
Chapter 3 will provide a rationale for the Great Commission survey that was used to collect data. First, a biblical theology of missions will be developed. From this theology, the ten criteria of a Great Commission church will be established. Finally, these ten criteria will inform the twenty-nine question survey that will be used to obtain measurable data.
Chapter 4 will describe the data collected by the questionnaire. The twenty-nine questions will be grouped according to their corresponding Great Commission church criterion. The data will be immediately assessed to form a preliminary conclusion regarding the nature of the majority of Chinese
house churches regarding their Great Commission involvement.
Chapter 5 will use published materials to describe the recent missionary efforts of the
house church in China, with special attention being given to the
Back to Jerusalem Movement (BTJ). This chapter will also depend upon various interviews that the author has conducted to supplement the scarcity of resources in this sensitive area. The goal is to verify or modify the conclusions reached in chapter 4. The chapter will finish by listing the missiological weaknesses of the modern-day Chinese
house church.
Finally, chapter 6 is a contextualized training proposal designed to assist Chinese
house churches to become Great Commission churches. The training will lead church leaders to develop a plan for their local church that will strengthen its missiology and enable it to more effectively participate in the Great Commission.

▼ This paper studies the determinants of house prices by National Housing Corporation (NHC) in Kenya. The main question addressed is whether the conventional fundamental determinants of house prices, such as GDP per capita, real interest rates, and construction costs, have driven observed house prices in Kenya.
This study relied on secondary data. The research adopted a case study of National Housing Corporation. Regression analysis was used to analyze the data and find out whether GDP per capita, real interest rates and construction costs determined house prices by NHC
The study shows that house prices in Kenya are determined to a large extent by the underlying conventional fundamentals and some transition-specific factors, in particular institutional development of housing markets and housing finance and quality effects.
There appears to be a strong correlation between the house prices and conventional determinants (GDP per capita, real interest rates, and construction costs).
A summary regression showed that the variables considered could explain that house prices were really determined by these variables.

▼ This project looks at three haunted
house novels over a wide span of time: The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, The Haunting of Hill
House by Shirley Jackson, and The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. The investigation will seek to understand how the haunted
house novel has evolved over time, by looking at three similar themes between the novels. The chapters examine the physical space of the haunted
house, the inclusion of female protagonists as a method of propagating the haunting, and the reliance on ambiguity as a storytelling technique. The findings will show that the houses have drastically changed over time, with the
house as a physical space starting as a relatively unimportant aspect of the narrative, and eventually evolving into a more prominent component of the haunting. A constant among the narratives was the presence of a female protagonist, who was in some way shaped by loss, deprivation, and unlucky romance. All three novels also relied heavily on ambiguity, through the use of unreliable characters or narrative technique, as a way of masking the true nature of the haunting. This project seeks to demonstrate how these three themes have functioned in haunted
house literature and how these three novels can be put into conversation with each other.

▼ Before Zambia was colonised, seventy-three tribes inhibited it and these lived in communities. A chief headed each tribe. The chiefs were the ones responsible for governing of the chiefdoms. Each tribe had its own way of administering its affairs. When Zambia was colonised, there were no attempts by the colonial masters to bring the chiefs closer to colonial administration so as to include them in national development. The chiefs were merely turned into tools of suppression. The chiefs' roles were merely to collect taxes and apprehension of criminals. This had no bearing on the development of the country for the colonised. Even though the native courts still existed, the judicial powers of the chiefs were not recognised and the courts operated with limited authority and highly depended on the British administration terms. The institution of chieftaincy has been in question for the past decade since Zambia became independent. This is an institution that has been given a pride of place under the Republican Constitution. It was realised that despite recognising the institution of chieftaincy under the Constitution, there was urgent need to integrate the chiefs in national development. Therefore, the One Party State established the House of Chiefs in 1965. This institution was also provided for under the Constitution. This institution was to be an advisory body to the government on matters that touched on tradition and customs. This was in also in relation to bills that would be sent to the House for consideration before parliament passed them into laws.During the One Party Rule, the chiefs had greatly contributed to national development by passing resolutions on certain matters that had to be taken on board for the development programmes that the government implemented. The chiefs were further empowered with the enactment of the Villages Registration and Development Act in 1971. This Act basically encouraged the chiefs to supervise village registration. When the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), came into power, there was another dimension in traditional governance. The establishment of the House of Chiefs was completely ignored. This was not consistent with the spirit of the Constitution. The New Deal government that extended the MMD rule later re-introduced the House of Chiefs due to pressure from various stakeholders to have the House re-introduced.The functions of the House of Chiefs are clearly outlined in Article 131 of the Constitution. The functions merely have to do with discussing bills sent to it for consideration and any other matters that the president refers to the House. These functions are not enough to enable the chiefs actively participate in national development. At the moment, the House of Chiefs is merely an advisory body to the government on matters of tradition and custom. There is need to redefine the role that the House of Chiefs must play in a democratic state. It must be integrated in national development. The functions must be extended beyond discussing bills and any other matters sent to…

▼ This dissertation examines how institutional, individual, and situational variables work to influence the volume of national broadcast and cable television news coverage members of the 109th, 110th, 111th, and 112th U.S. Houses of Representatives received. Analysis combines public data on House structure, member characteristics, member effort, and member circumstances with original computer-aided content analysis of the 38,430 transcripts in which members spoke and the 243,205 statements members made on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC between January 3, 2005 and January 3, 2013, the full terms of these four congresses. The results presented in this dissertation yield important information about which House members are most and least successful in garnering news coverage and how the effects of specific institutional, individual, and situational variables vary across different news organizations and across news organizations type. Implications for citizens, Congress, and democracy are discussed.

It has been investigated the D1 line transitions of 39K atoms in external magnetic fields using nanocells for the cases of sigma+ and pi polarizations of laser radiation. For the first time it is demonstrated the decoupling of electronic total angular momentum J and nuclear momentum I (complete hyperfine Paschen-Back regime) in external magnetic field. For 39K the decoupling takes place at B >> 165 G. In the case of linear polarization it is shown that for B > 400 G the transmission spectrum consists of 2 groups of transitions and each group contains of one so-called "Guiding transition" (GT). The GT indicates the asymptotic value of all transitions probabilities in the group and the frequency shifts derivatives value (frequency slopes) in magnetic field. For the first time it is demonstrated the absence of cross-over resonances in the spectrum of saturated absorption. For that Rb filled micro-cell has been used with atomic vapor thickness 30-40 µm. The use of micro cell allowed the investigation of individual atomic transitions in strong external magnetic fields 30 - 6000 G ) using the saturated absorption technique. It is experimentally and theoretically manifested that at certain values of the external magnetic fields (300 - 2000 G) the probabilities of the Cs D2 line Fg=3 – > Fe=5 atomic transitions experience huge increase. These probabilities,…

Background: Long-lasting pain is a subjectively persistent pain that lasts for more than three months. The pain recurs in relapces where localization, intensity and type of pain can differ between the episodes. In long-lasting pain is back pain the most common type and mostly localized in lumbar, shoulder or neck. The pain experience needs to be seen in its entirety, where individuals use different resources and strategies to get through the pain episodes. Aim: The purpose of this literature review was to illuminate individuals’ experiences and manageability of living with long-lasting back pain Method: The databases used to search for articles were CINAHL Complete, PubMed and PsycINFO, which resulted in twelve qualitative articles. The articles were finally analyzed according to Friberg's model for analysis. Results: The result consists of three main themes. The first theme is Individuals emotional perception of long-lasting back paincontaining four sub-categories. These sub-categories are Emergence of negative emotions, Social aspects,…

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of fear on motor performance during low back pain induced by a delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) protocol. A DOMS protocol was performed in 25 healthy volunteers (18 women; average age 22.68 years) using weighted trunk extension exercises. Measures of pain intensity, physical impairment, and fear were measured at baseline, 48, and 72 hours post-DOMS protocol. Regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between fear and motor performance. Pain intensity (p=0.049), but not pain catastrophizing (p=0.301), was associated with standing trunk flexion (F2,23=3.40, p=0.051). Further modeling explained the relationship between physical impairment index scores, pain intensity, and fear of movement (χ2=18.300, p=0.0001). Contradictory to previous studies, fear of pain was not a significant predictor in most of the analyses. The difference in findings may be due to the lower levels of pain intensity and disability produced in this model. ( en )

Seljalihaste isomeetrilist vastupidavust hinnati Sørenseni testiga, mille käigus registreeriti seljalihaste bioelektriline aktiivsus m. erector spinae´l ning lihasvibratsiooni kasutati lihaskäävide stimuleerimiseks, et kutsuda esile kehaasendi häirumine ruumis. Uuringu tulemustest selgus, et selja sirutajalihaste kestva submaksimaalse staatilise pingutuse tingimustes väsisid alaseljavaludega indiviidid kiiremini võrreldes tervetega.

▼ Among the decapod crustaceans, brachyuran crabs or the true crabs occupy a very significant position due to their ecological and economic value. Crabs support a sustenance fishery in India, even though their present status is not comparable to that of shrimps and lobsters. They are of great demand in the domestic market as well as in the foreign markets. In addition to this, brachyuran crabs are of great ecological importance. They form the conspicuous members of the mangrove ecosystems and play a significant role in detritus formation, nutrient recycling and dynamics of the ecosystem. Considering all these factors, crabs are often considered to be the keystone species of the mangrove ecosystem. Though several works have been undertaken on brachyuran crabs world –wide as well as within the country, reports on the brachyuran crabs of Kerala waters are very scanty. Most of the studies done on brachyuran fauna were from the east coast of India and a very few works from the west coast.
Among the edible crabs, mud crabs belonging to genus Scylla forms the most important due to their large size and taste. They are being exported on a large scale to the foreign markets like Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Kerala is the biggest supplier of live mud crabs and Chennai is the major centre of live mud crab export. However, there exists considerable confusion regarding the identification of mud crabs because of the subtle morphological differences between the species. In this context, an extensive study was undertaken on the brachyuran fauna of Cochin Backwaters, Kerala, India, to have a basic knowledge on their diversity, habitat preference and systematics. The study provides an attempt to resolve the confusion pertaining in the species identification of mud crabs belonging to Genus Scylla.
Diversity study revealed the occurrence of 23 species of brachyuran crabs belonging to 16 genera and 8 families in the study area Cochin Backwaters. Among the families, the highest number of species was recorded from Family Portunidae .Among the 23 crab species enlisted from the Cochin backwaters, 5 species are of commercial importance and contribute a major share to the crustacean fishery of the Cochin region. It was observed that, the Cochin backwaters are invaded by certain marine migrant species during the Post monsoon and Pre monsoon periods and they are found to disappear with the onset of monsoon. The study reports the occurrence of the ‘herring bow crab’ Varuna litterata in the Cochin backwaters for the first time. Ecological studies showed that the substratum characteristics influence the occurrence, distribution and abundance of crabs in the sampling stations rather than water quality parameters. The variables which affected the crab distribution the most were Salinity, moisture content in the sediment, organic carbon and the sediment texture. Besides the water and sediment quality parameters, the most important factor influencing the distribution of crabs is the presence of mangroves. The study also revealed that most of the…

▼ In the study of sound identification, land animals such as birds and bats have been well investigated, and so are their habitats. On the other hand, sound making creatures in the ocean are much less researched. In this research, the stress calls of three Holocentridaes, Neoniphon sammara, Myripristis murdjan, and Sargocentron spinosissimum, who are commonly found in coral reefs, were recorded in water tank for analysis of sound characteristics. The averaged characteristic parameters of single pulse among three is around 410 Hz for the peak frequency, 100 Hz for the bandwidth, 0.07 dB/Hz for the slope, and duration of 0.05 s. As for the impulse train, averaged peak frequency is 415 Hz, 55 Hz for the bandwidth, 0.07 dB/Hz for the slope, and duration of 0.5 s. These parameters were first checked by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test to identify if each parameter follows normal distribution; the slopes of ascending and descending frequency and the total duration are not in normal distribution. The three parameters were later transferred so as to concentrate variances. Next, analysis of variance was applied on all characteristics to extract the significant parameters (including non transferred and transferred data), which were then tested by Stepwise Discriminat and
Back-propagation Network. The identification rate of for single pulse with and without data transfer is 63% and 82% while pulse train is 57% and 73%. Both identification rates were raised up approximately 20% due to the data transfer. Both methods provide an reliable tool for marine sound identification, and the whole process of the study may be applied to another biological identification.

▼ The essence of TCM diagnosis is âSyndrome Differentiation and Treatmentâ, in which differentiation is based on four methods of observation, smell, inquiry and palpation. The examination of the observing is the most important procedure in the method of âtongue diagnosisâ. In recent years, sublingual vein is proved to be related closely with human organs in medical researches. By observing pathological changes of sublingual vein with features to determine if lesion happens to human organs and then give treatments as soon as possible. Due to the clinical tongue diagnosis usually depends on the factors of doctorâs subjective opinions, accumulated experiences and environment at time, the result is likely to be limited to and influenced by subjectively judgments of knowledge, experiences, thinking patterns, diagnosis skills, senses and explanations of color. Different doctors may not have the same diagnosis to one tongue pattern which leads to inconsistency. By using technical method as assistance to diagnose, along with standard judgment progress to acquire reliable diagnosis is an important issue to improve the value of TCM clinical application. This research is about using one of the developments of image process technology-Automatic sublingual vein feature extraction system-to reach targets of objective and quantitative by computer interpretation. An important prerequisite is that the result of sublingual vein features also can be applied in clinical assistance and used in sublingual vein date base.
ããThe features of sublingual arteries and veins are captured mainly from separating the parts of the
back of tongue, and then grab the area of sublingual arteries and veins to identify its features. First, take the photos of patientsâ
back tongues and grab the exact images of their sublingual arteries and veins via adjusting the unreal color parts of the tongue photos. This research grabs the images of
back tongues via analyzing the RGB performances of tongue
back, lips, teeth, and mouth skin, and transferring these into HIS color, which is easier for human eyes to recognize the features of these parts, and also combined with the removals of mouth skin area, teeth area, and black area, rectangle detection, and detection of control points to further improve the images of the
back of tongue. After the separation of the
back of the tongue image, process histogram equalization and hue offset to enhance the color contrast level, and use the changes in RGB color components, hue, saturation, and brightness characteristics to separate sublingual vein, and in accordance with sublingual vein colors and locations to distinguish the color light, the length and the vein branches to analyze whether there is a varicose vein. At the same time, the research is intended to capture the tongue features such as sublingual sac column, vesicles, petechiae, and bleeding silk, and integrate and analyze these features to assist and provide practitioners as clinical diagnostic references.

▼ This work focuses on electronic transport and defect
structure in multiple novel dielectric systems used for back end of
line (BEOL) applications. BEOL dielectrics with low dielectric
constants, so called low-k dielectrics, and materials which can be
used as etch stop layers which have lower dielectric constants than
silicon nitride, are needed for current and future integrated
circuit technology nodes. However, an understanding of the defects
which limit reliability, degrade performance, and contribute to
leakage currents in these films is not yet developed. In this
research conventional electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR),
leakage current, and electrically detected magnetic resonance
(EDMR) measurements were utilized to investigate a-SiC:H and SiOC:H
dielectrics. These dielectrics are believed to be the most
important in future technology. In this study multiple variations
in processing conditions, including post-deposition anneals, film
chemistry, UV irradiation, and deposition techniques were analyzed.
There is a strong correlation between conventional EPR defect
density measurements and leakage currents in many of these films.
There is also a very strong correlation between hydrogen content
and both leakage current and EPR defect density for the a-SiC:H
films. The SiOC:H films have a much more complex relationship
between EPR defects and leakage currents. In many cases, a close
correspondence between the EPR defect density measurement and the
leakage currents strongly indicates that the defects observed by
EPR are largely responsible for the leakage currents. These defects
therefore likely limit the dielectric reliability, but the
correspondence is imperfect. Important reliability phenomena in
these films, which are likely limited by defects observed in this
study, are time-dependent dielectric breakdown and stress induced
leakage current. Additionally, EDMR via spin dependent trap
assisted tunneling (SDT) has been utilized to investigate the
direct link between defects observed in EPR defects and electrical
transport.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to research the possibility of realizing hardware support for hybrid single electron transistor (SET)-CMOS circuits by a systematic approach of design, analysis and simulation. The metallic SET transistors considered in this work are fabricated within the chip interconnect layers using CMOS
back-end-of-line (BEOL)-compatible processing. The CMOS process integration can be divided into front-end-of-line (FEOL) and BEOL processes. The FEOL includes processes required to form isolated CMOS transistors whereas BEOL is the second portion of the IC fabrication where the devices get interconnected through the wiring using multiple layers of dielectrics and metals. Therefore, metallic SET circuits can be easily stacked above the CMOS platform presenting a low cost, low thermal budget, improving the overall yield at high-volume production of highly integrated systems. This considerably decreases the interconnect parasitics and increases the density of functions while maintaining the overall acceptable performance. Many problems such as low current drivability, delay and small voltage gain that hinder SET technology for its implementation in integrated circuits can be alleviated by intelligent circuit design. Although a complete replacement of CMOS by SETs is unlikely in the near future, an augmentation of CMOS with SETs is desirable if interfacing from and to CMOS works well. Interfacing from CMOS to SET circuitry is simple as the current and voltage levels are small and in accessible range. But interfacing CMOS from SET circuits is delicate due to SET logic's low current driving capability for CMOS and its interconnect. There is no concrete research on the interface issue wherein a SET-only circuitry drives a CMOS and its interconnects. For such hybridization to become possible, it is necessary to demonstrate the SET logic driving capability for CMOS with sufficient current drive and output voltage. The core SET logic can be designed to operate at low voltage, but at the interface the output of the SET logic must be in a voltage range that can be fed to a CMOS input for proper logic functionality. It is hence necessary to develop and adopt a systematic design methodology for such hybrid circuits at a specific technology node for room temperature operation. In this thesis we will look at a generalized design methodology that can be applied to (a) develop a fabrication model with parasitic effect of a hybrid SET-CMOS and SET-only circuits, (b) design and analyze the SET based fundamental building block in hybrid SET-CMOS or SET-only circuit and (c) simulate such a circuitry to assess its merits. More specifically, we will address the interfacing issue of such hybrid circuits in which we exploit the maximum capability of a SET logic in terms of driving capability, voltage response and power for a room temperature operation. The result of this research motivates the application of SET logic in 2 stages realizing some properties beyond those of CMOS devices. The first stage is the heterogeneous…

▼ The City of Johannesburg is facing the simultaneous challenges of an increased generation of solid waste in the City, unemployment and the running out of land to dispose the waste. Of the solid waste that is generated, 50% is recyclable while only 10% is recycled (SOER, 2003: 69). Solid waste recycling is mainly performed through private sector initiatives in the City of Johannesburg. Consequently, there is no proper coordination with government initiatives. In order for South Africa to increase and sustain economic growth that would decrease unemployment, there should be a culture of entrepreneurship (Mass, G & Herrington M, 2006:7). Solid waste buy-back centres assist in addressing the challenges of dealing with the increased generation of solid waste and the scarcity of land for disposal. These centres also reduce the challenges of unemployment through promoting entrepreneurs to operate solid waste recycling businesses. Developed economies have managed to increase the rate of solid waste recycling to 60%. The problems associated with solid waste have been reduced by promoting recycling through a combination of legislation and setting-up of agencies to deal with solid waste recycling. South Africa has legislation and stated programmes to deal with solid waste recycling. Nevertheless, there has been complexity with implementing recycling. This is the result of a lack of co-ordination between the role-players involved in the value chain of solid waste recycling. In order for the City of Johannesburg to increase the recycling of solid waste from 10% to optimal rates of between 50% and 60%, there should be co-ordination of programmes amongst all the role players. In addition, there should also be skills provision to existing and potential entrepreneurs operating the solid waste buy-back centres. All spheres of government should promote solid waste recycling business to potential entrepreneurs and the public in order to recycle 40% of the recyclable solid waste that is not being recycled. The establishment of a solid waste buy-back centre in the City of Johannesburg is economically viable with some buy-back centre realising a net-profit of least R5 000 and some more than R30 000 per month. In order for the solid waste buy-back centre to realise a net-profit of more than R30 000 per month, there must be more than 40 tons of recyclable solid waste received by the buy-back centre per month. This study has indicated that solid waste buy-back centres rely on the economies of scale. This means that the more recyclable solid waste is received and sold by the solid waste buy-back centres, the more profitable it becomes.

▼ Back pain is a very common musculoskeletal impairment in most Americans. Average annual occurrence of
back pain is reported around 30% of the population and is the most common cause of activity limitation in people younger than 45 years old. Eighty percent of the
back pain presents in the lumbar spine. Although this ailment is very prevalent in the American population, there is a lack of empirical evidence supporting the common clinical diagnosis and intervention
back pain strategies. The frequency of
back pain and the lack of treatment methods were the motivation for this investigation. It is important to better understand spine dynamics during ambulatory tasks of daily activities to identify possible biomechanical mechanisms underlying
back pain.
Current biomechanical quantification methods for spine dynamics are either too invasive or not detailed enough to fully comprehend detailed spinal movement. Therefore, a non-invasive but detailed procedure to calculate spine dynamics was developed and tested. In this study, multi-segmented spine dynamics (kinematics and kinetics) were calculated during four activities of daily living (level walking (W), obstacle crossing (OC), stair ascent (SA) and stair descent (SD)).
Our findings suggested an in-vivo multi-segmented spine surface marker set is able to detect different and repeatable motion patterns during walking among various spinal segments. The sacrum to lower lumbar (SLL) joint had the largest range of motion (ROM) when compared to the other more superior joints (lower lumbar to upper lumbar and upper lumbar to lower thoracic). Furthermore, SA task demonstrated more flexion ROM than both W and SD tasks. In addition to task influence, joints at different spine levels also demonstrated different ROMs, where SLL had a greater ROM than upper lumbar to lower thoracic (ULLT) in the transverse plane. Age was found to not significantly affect the segmental spinal ROM or peak angles. The vertical segmental joint reaction forces were different between tasks, where SD yielded larger vertical reaction forces than W.
Overall, findings from this dissertation work were able to show that a multi-segment spine marker system could be an effective tool in determining different spinal dynamics during various activities of daily living.
This dissertation includes unpublished co-authored material.

▼ The purpose of this study was to quantify the association between baseline measurements of lumbar extremes of motion, body mass index, self-reported histories of physical activity, and stiffness for musculoskeletal injuries of the low
back and hip among women of different ages and racial groups.
Participants in the WIN study at the Cooper Institute in Dallas, TX completed Web-based questionnaires on demographics, orthopedic history of symptoms, injuries, and weekly minutes of moderate and/or vigorous physical activity. Data from self-reported orthopedic history of 911 women were analyzed along with measures of lumbar spine motion. The self-reported data consisted of age, race, physical activity level, history of stiffness, and history of musculoskeletal injury (MSI).
Four-hundred and sixty-three (50.8%) of 911 women reported having a history of MSI of the low
back and hip. Univariate logistic regression models suggest that lumbar flexion in the middle or third quintile (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = [0.44 to .99], p = .05) and history of stiffness (OR = 5.99, 95% CI = [4.5 to 8.0], p = .001) relate to increased likelihood of MSI. Further analysis using multivariate logistic regression revealed that although the women in the third quintile for lumbar flexion were still less likely to report an MSI (OR = 0.68, 95% CI = [0.43 to 1.1], p = .11), it did not reach statistical significance. However, women with reported history of stiffness in the low
back and hip at baseline had increased likelihood of MSI regardless of baseline quintile of lumbar motion. Further, the multivariate logistic regression model for MSI controlling for lumbar flexion and extension motion, race, age, body mass index, and physical activity demonstrated that women with history of stiffness (OR = 6.2, 95% CI = [4.6 to 8.3], p = .001) have increased likelihood of MSI of the low
back and hip.
Women with self-reported history of stiffness at baseline are 6 times more likely to report MSI of the low
back and hip. Therapeutic interventions to address low
back and hip stiffness early may aid in decreasing MSI of these regions for other women with comparable characteristics.

▼ Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood cancer, with an expected long-term survival rate of approximately 80 – 85%. Observations have lead researchers to believe that adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood ALL have an unexpectedly high frequency of lower
back pain. This increase of pain is attributed to the number of lumber punctures during treatment. Various factors influence levels of pain (i.e. BMI, exercise and neuroticism) and pain has been shown to have a negative effect on quality of life. Hope, a construct that has not been widely studied in the oncology literature, may be a buffer between pain and quality of life, meaning that those with higher hope are able to cope with their pain more effectively and in turn have a better quality of life. Moreover, because survivors have had an aversive experience, they may have increased levels of hope, thus despite high pain levels have a positive quality of life. Results suggested that ALL survivors reported higher pain ratings than siblings, but lower total hope and agency. Agency and total hope were significant predictors of QoL at time 2 over and above QoL at time 1 and mediated the relationship between pain time 1 and QoL time 2 when QoL time was not a covariate. These results conclude that hope and more specifically, agency, should be further examined in pediatric oncology and merits the development and investigation of a hope intervention.

▼ Low
back pain is one of the most frequent health problems and also one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders. It’s the leading reason for activity limitation and job absenteeism which leads to huge economic burden on persons, society, industry and governments. Women are more susceptible to low
back pain due to hormonal effects, differences in reporting of somatic symptoms and greater sensitization of pain. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of low
back pain on activities of daily living and quality of life of adult women attending Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), Eldoret, Kenya. The following objectives were addressed, namely to determine pain intensity, functional disability and quality of life of adult women as well as to explore the activities of daily living that may contribute to low
back pain. A sequential explanatory mixed method approach, comprising of a cross-sectional descriptive and explorative design for the quantitative and qualitative phases respectively, was employed in the study. A self-administered questionnaire consisting of four sections (socio-demographic information, the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, the Oswestry Disability Index Questionnaire and World Health Organization Quality of Life Tool) was completed by two hundred and thirty-four adult women with a mean age of 38.54 years (SD=9.40). Twenty-six women participated in the focus group discussions. Results of the study indicate that 94.6% of the women had experienced low
back pain in the past year while 90.1% had low
back pain in the past seven days. In addition, more than half of the women (52.3%) experienced moderate pain intensity. Almost three quarters (68.1%) of the participants who experienced pain in the past year reported that low
back pain prevented them from carrying out their activities of daily living. Half of the participants (50.2%) had moderate disability. A significant positive correlation was found between pain and disability (r = 0.426; p = 0.000) while a non-significant negative correlation was found between low
back pain and quality of life (r = -0.058; p = 0.390). The qualitative results showed that women have difficulty in performing certain activities of daily living i.e. personal hygiene, sitting, standing and housework due to low
back pain. A significant correlation was found between pain intensity, disability and quality of life. Such correlations advocate towards the bio-psychosocial model in management of low
back pain. There is a need to invest in primary-based health care to include low
back pain and its related risk factors, in order to advise the affected population on appropriate and essential prevention strategies. Future interventions should focus on enhancing physical health and psychosocial stress in women with low
back pain.

▼ Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare emergency department (ED) length of stay (LOS) between patients treated with opioid analgesia versus non-opioid analgesia for low
back pain (LBP) in the ED.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study using a national database in the United States (US). The ED component of the 2014 and 2015 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey was used for this study. Adult (age ≥ 18 years) patients who presented to the ED with a reason for visit or primary diagnosis of LBP were included in the final study sample. Patient visits were categorized into two groups based on whether they received opioid analgesia (with or without non-opioid analgesia) or non-opioid analgesia only in the ED. The primary outcome measure was ED LOS, which was log-transformed (as ED LOS was not normally distributed) for analysis. A multivariable linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between opioid use and log-transformed ED LOS.
RESULTS: The study sample consisted of a national estimate of approximately 8.6 million ED visits for LBP, of which 60.1% received opioids and 39.9% received non-opioids only. The geometric mean ED LOS for patient visits who received opioids was longer than patient visits who received non-opioids (142 versus 92 minutes, respectively; p<0.001). After adjusting for confounders in the multivariable analysis, patient visits that received opioids had a significantly longer ED LOS (coefficient 0.25; 95% CI 0.11 to 0.38; p<0.001).
CONCLUSION: In a nationally representative sample of patient visits to ED due to LBP in the US, use of opioids for
back pain in the ED was associated with an increased ED LOS.

▼ Entertainment media represent a primary source of health information, making it a prime area of research for wide-spread health issues such as chronic pain. Chronic pain conditions can elicit stigmatization due to pain representing a subjective experience; coming to understand the experience of a person in pain can reduce stigma for that person as well as the entire group of people with chronic pain. Entertainment media, through the use of an engaging narrative and characters, can portray an illness experience that potentially elicits empathy and reduces stigma for chronic pain conditions. This study is among the few to employ empathy and stigma measures for chronic pain. In a mixed experimental design, participants watched either a healthy or chronic pain media depiction from the television series House, M.D. and subsequently read an article about Smith, a stigmatized depiction of a man who experiences chronic pain after a vehicular accident. Empathy was divided into affective and cognitive components, and measured at baseline, post-video, and post-article times. Results from a repeated-measures ANOVA found that Gregory House was highly stigmatized and Smith moderately stigmatized. Additionally, empathy diminished for both healthy and pain depictions with no statistical difference. However, significant gender differences were found between baseline, post-video, and post-article scores for both empathy and stigma. Females experienced greater changes in empathy and stigma than males, expressing both higher baseline scores and lower post-video scores. Implications for cultivation theory are explored.

▼ Fluoride based chemical systems are widely used at various stages in microelectronic processing, particularly for wet cleaning and etching applications. Some examples include the use of semi aqueous fluoride (SAF) solutions in
back end of line cleaning, the use of dilute HF solutions as etchants for SiO2 and HF-HNO3 or HF-H2O2 solutions as isotropic etchants for silicon. In this work, the use of fluoride based solutions for two applications relevant to semiconductor processing are considered. In the first part of the study, cleaning of post plasma etch residues generated during fabrication of copper damascene structures was investigated in semi aqueous fluoride (SAF) formulations based on dimethyl sulfoxide and ammonium fluoride. Formulations designed for residue removal should be able to remove the residue effectively, without causing critical dimension loss during the process cycle. A systematic evaluation of solution variables (solvent content and pH) was conducted and the extent of removal of model copper oxide films and selectivity over copper and carbon doped oxide (CDO) films were used as metrics to evaluate the formulations. Results of the study indicate that the presence of solvent is necessary to achieve reasonable etch selectivity over dielectric films. Additionally, a removal end point detection technique based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was developed, which could potentially help in the optimization of cleaning time with minimal dielectric loss. This method was applied to monitor the removal of copper oxide films as well as residue from patterned test structures. In the second part of the study, electrochemical formation of porous silicon films in hydrofluoric acid (HF) solutions was investigated, for potential applications in advanced packaging. Specifically, porous silicon formation in solution mixtures containing HF, acetic acid and peroxide, was studied. The effect of variables including current density, substrate resistivity, HF, acetic acid and peroxide concentration, on key porous film characteristics such as growth rate, porosity and microstructure, was explored. Addition of peroxide was found to significantly increase the porosity and growth rate of the film, as a result of enhanced chemical dissolution and films with porosities as high as 95% were obtained. Additionally, in solutions containing peroxide, a variety of microstructural features, such as nanopores, micron sized pores, truncated pyramidal structures and silicon needles were observed, under various fabrication conditions.

▼ Given that the basic functions of parliamentary Question Time are to provide information and to hold the Government accountable for its actions, the possibility of evasion occurring in such a context is of crucial importance. Evasion (equivocation) has been identified as a matter of concern in political interviews, but no systematic study has been undertaken in the context of parliamentary discourse, notably Question Time, anywhere in the world. This study applies and adapts Harris's (1991) coding framework on various types of responses, Bull and Mayer's (1993) typology of non-replies and Clayman's (2001) work on how politicians 'resist' answering questions, all of which are based on political news interviews, to the study of evasion in Australia's House of Representatives' Question Time. A comprehensive, unified framework for the analysis of evasion is described, a decision flow-chart for the framework is provided, and an illustrative example of the applied framework is given based on Australia's Federal House of Representatives' Question Time. Put simply, the study was undertaken to determine if evasion occurred, how frequently it occurred and how it occurred. It involved the classification of responses as 'answers' (direct or indirect), 'intermediate responses' (such as pointing out incorrect information in the question), and 'evasions' based on specific criteria. Responses which were considered evasions were further analysed to determine the levels of evasion, whether they were covert or overt in nature and the types of 'agenda shifts' that occurred, if any. The thesis also involved a discourse-analytical study of other factors that appear to facilitate Ministerial evasion in Australia's House of Representatives, including the Speaker's performance and the use of 'Dorothy Dixers'. The research data was sourced from Question Time transcripts from the House of Representatives Hansard for the months of February and March 2003, dealing only with questions and responses on the topic of Iraq. In those months there were 87 questions on the topic of Iraq, representing more than two thirds of all questions on Iraq for the whole of 2003. Of these 87 questions, the majority (48) came from the Opposition party, through its leader. The balance (39) was asked by Government MPs. Analysis of the question/answer discourse for all 87 questions revealed that every question asked by Government members was answered compared to only 8 of the 48 Opposition questions. Of the 40 remaining Opposition questions, 21 were given intermediate responses and 19 were evaded outright. The fact that the overwhelming majority (83%) of Opposition questions were not answered together with other findings such as instances of partiality on the part of the Speaker; the use of 'friendly', prearranged questions by Government MPs; and the 'hostile' nature of questions asked by Opposition MPs casts serious doubt on the effectiveness of Question Time as a means of ensuring the Government is held accountable for its actions. The study provides empirical…

In recent years the miniaturization of microsystems is reaching the physical limit of its development. Thus, a path of innovation in the semiconductor industry is additional functionalities in existing components. The project consists to integrate a MEMS, within the same metal interconnect of CMOS layer which, by rotating, can establish an electrical contact. The obstacles are in the release of the moving parts by dissolution of the surrounding oxide (out of plane deformation under the effect of residual stress, stiction, residues which prevent contact), in the actuation (current density repeatability, durability, reliability) and, for ohmic switches, the ability to establish a real electrical contact with low resistance (real / apparent area of contact with rough surfaces, contact pollution). The work carried out has focused on conception (design) and simulation of microsystems to overcome these difficulties and / or to study the behavior and measure the effects.

The purpose of this study was to verify the accuracy of the formulas previously established in other studies to determine values of prostate size and suggest a new formula that considers other characteristics of the animal besides the weight to provide a quantitative analysis of prostate. Prostatic ultrasonographic evaluation were performed in 63 non-castrated and healthy dogs of 6 years old in maximun. We obtained the animal\'s weight, height and length of the back. Immediately after death the animals underwent prostatectomy and the actual glandular volume was determined through water column displacement and its mass had been determined by weighting it on an analytical scale. We calculated through pre-established formulas the values of measures prostate as height, length, volume and weight. The weight and volume obtained from the formulas were compared with values obtained weight after weighing and the volume obtained after water column displacement. The values of length and height measurements obtained by the formulas were compared to values of sonographic linear measurements. We obtained the Residual Mean Square (RMS) and percentage to test the adherence of these formulas. After linear regression it was observed a bigger correlation in using the animal\'s measures as various explanation in formulas to calculate the values of length and height measures of the prostate. Measure prostatic length (CL) and height (AL) can…

▼ Hypothesis. It is considered that during
horseback riding the three-dimensional movements initiated by
horse’s hind legs also cause responsive movements by the horseman;
these movements stimulate symmetric muscle activeness and develop
gross motor functions. Analogical movements that imitate
three-dimensional actions caused by the horse performed on a
therapeutic ball should have lesser influence on the symmetry of
muscle activeness of children with CP since the actions are
triggered by subjects themselves. It is likely that during gross
motor function development the psycho-emotional condition of the
human being should improve also perfecting the person’s horseback
riding skills. The Aims of the Research. 1. To analyze horseback
riding influence on gross motor function, muscle activeness and
psycho-emotional condition of healthy children and children with
CP. 2. To analyze the influence of exercises on a therapeutic ball
on the symmetry of muscle activeness of healthy children and
children with CP. The Goals of the Research. 1. To determine and to
compare the symmetry of muscle (m. erector spinae lumbar, m.
gluteus medius) activeness of healthy children and children with CP
while doing exercises on a therapeutic ball using the methods of
electromyography and myotonometry. 2. To evaluate the influence of
horseback riding on gross motor function of beginner and advanced
horsemen with CP. 3. To compare the muscle activeness symmetry of
beginner and advanced horsemen (both... [to full

71 tiriamasis.
