4199. Carstens, Christoffel. Invloed van televisie op die verwestersingsproses by die Swart adolessent.

Degree: 1995, University of South Africa

Subjects/Keywords: Adolescents; Cultural change; Educational television programmes; Black Adolescents; Acculturation; Attitudes; Culture shock; Future shock; Projective techniques; This study investigates the effects of educational television on a group of Black adolescents under conditions of accelerated westernisation. The Black adolescent - in sharp contrast to his White counterpart - is exposed to two broad cultural streams of influence, namely: (a) traditional cultures which form part and parcel of his personal African existence, and (b) Western-orientated (White) culture, which is the dominant way of life, especially in the urban areas. Urban (Western) culture in the RSA is in essence dynamic, accelerated change being an integral part of its nature. This change is often of a politically, socially and economically radical nature, demanding considerable adjustment by Black adolescents who are in the process of westernisation. Black adolescents are consequently often exposed not only to Western culture but also to future shock. Experimental and control groups of Black adolescents were tested by the TAT-Z. The experimental group was then exposed to a series of Western educational television programmes for a period of six months. These programmes reflected specific Western values, norms and practices. The control group was not exposed to these television programmes. Both groups were retested by the TAT-Z after six months. The pre- and post-test results were then compared for similarities and differences. Significant qualitative and quantitative changes were considered and discussed in terms of a westernisation model which was developed as part of the study's theoretical frame of reference. Amongst other things, the results reflected the following: (a) In the experimental group significant changes were observed mainly in the personality areas of self-image and attitude towards/relationships with authority figures. (b) Cultural change is not a condition, but a process. It is not necessarily a one-way or twoway process, but is sometimes a directionless process in search of direction. (c) Exposure to educational television programmes does not necessarily result in accelerated westernisation. Such exposure sometimes even has a regressive outcome, ie reinforcement of tradition-orientated behaviour.

4200. Busink, A.M.T. The perceptions of nurses and certified nursing assistants on care-related prevention concerning people with dementia: a mixed methods approach.

Subjects/Keywords: ENGLISH ABSTRACT Title: The perceptions of nurses and certified nursing assistants on care-related prevention concerning people with dementia: a mixed methods approach. Background: Because of the growing number of people with dementia; care-related prevention activities done by nurses and certified nursing assistants will become increasingly important to prevent complications and maintain an acceptable quality of life. Currently it’s unknown what the perceptions of nurses and certified nursing assistants towards care-related prevention in dementia care are. Aim: To gain insight into the perceptions of nurses and certified nursing assistants towards care-related prevention so care-related prevention for people with dementia can be further improved in the future. Research question: How do nurses and certified nursing assistants working in home care; residential or nursing homes perceive care-related prevention concerning people with dementia? Method: A mixed methods approach with survey research and individual semi-structured interviews. First; secondary analyses were done on existing survey data collected in 2011 on a sample of 206 nurses and certified nursing assistants. Second; in March-May 2014 12 individual semi-structured interviews were conducted to embellish the quantitative results. Results: From this study three concepts related to the perceptions of nurses and CNAs towards care-related prevention activities emerged: attitude; knowledge and skills and the future. Nurses and certified nursing assistants think care-related prevention is a task of their profession. They experience insufficient knowledge and skills and they like to devote more time to care-related prevention in the future. Conclusion: Nurses and certified nursing assistants perceive care-related prevention to be part of their profession. They however express the need for more education on care-related prevention; preferably in a classroom setting. In the future; nurses and certified nursing assistants like to devote more time to care-related prevention and e-health can support this. Recommendations: Additional training of nurses and certified nursing assistants focused on their different needs and use of e-health. Keywords (max 5): perceptions; care-related prevention; dementia; nursing
