▼ Zionism represents a turning point in the rise of the nation-state to its present near-ubiquity, a national movement which did not construct an identity concurrently with its embrace of nationalism, but reconstructed a diaspora to fit it. I explore how early Political Zionists, particularly Theodor Herzl, perceived both the push and pull of nationalism, and why they were drawn to adopt an ideology and political structure whose basic principles, I argue, were intrinsically hostile to Jews. I begin by examining the socialist Moses Hess as a forerunner and microcosm of later Zionism, arguing his work is underpinned by anxiety about social heterogeneity. The second chapter focuses on portrayals of diaspora, its contradictions and the ambivalence they caused towards less assimilated Jews, nonetheless used as models for national identity. I continue by investigating the countries Herzl looked to as partners on the world stage and models of nationhood, arguing his vision of nationhood was far broader than that of most nationalists and involved a recognised role among other nations. The fourth chapter concerns understandings of 'homeland' and the relationship between people and territory, concluding Zionism's effect is achieved, not just by inhabiting Palestine, but by public desire and effort to do so. I devote my final chapter to concepts of modernity, its perception as both paradoxical and inescapable, and how national historical narratives arrange history into a rational, linear structure. While Zionists left many presumptions of nationalism and modernity unchallenged, most importantly that both nation and state transcend political divides, my conclusion stresses those presumptions they accepted, those aspects they saw as inescapable, and those they pragmatically performed belief in, to achieve Gentile acceptance of Jewish nationhood. I surmise that it was this sense of inevitability, along with the difficulties of diaspora, which gave Jews reason to make displays of accepting the nation-state.

▼ The German language had an ambivalent and controversial status in the Jewish world between the late eighteenth century and the late nineteenth century, being associated with different—often conflicting—ideas of modernization, assimilation, secularization, and religious reform. With the introduction of nationalist ideas into Central and Eastern Europe, the historical struggle over German’s competing meanings in Jewish societies came to the fore. Jewish nationalists mobilized the transnational quality of German to advance their cause, but they also combated German’s ubiquity in Jewish societies. German was the language of Central European imperial culture, but also the language of nationalist and socialist agitation. It was a major part of Jewish multilingualism, but also a role model of monolingual nationalism. It was a driving force of Jewish secularization, but also a nearly-sacred language of Jewish prayer and sermon. This dissertation traces the Jewish history of the German language between 1870 and 1939, using it as a prism for understanding the historical, religious, and ideological tensions and contradictions embedded in Jewish nationalism. I argue that German stood at the crossroads of key ideological, theological, and social currents of modern Jewish and European histories. As such, it defied the common distinction between Jewish and non-Jewish languages, allowing us to discern the multilingual underpinnings of Jewish nationalism. The dissertation begins with a chapter that lays out the different trajectories through which the German language came to be associated with transformative social and cultural processes. Each of the following chapters explores a different aspect of German’s ambivalent status in the Jewish world: its function as a language of transnational political agitation in nineteenth-century Central Europe; as a vehicle of scholarly knowledge in Eastern European Jewish communities; as a marker of diasporic Jewish multilingualism; as a language of modern Jewish theology; and as a language historically and linguistically bound up with Yiddish. ▼ Following World War I, leaders of the most important nations on the globe wondered how they were going to prevent a crisis like the war from happening again. United States President Woodrow Wilson in his Fourteen Points address, stated that an organization which was based on international diplomacy was necessary. What effects did the League of Nations have on the Palestine Mandate specifically and how did Wilson’s relationships affect the power structure of the Mandate? What impact did this have on the Arab population within Palestine? Out of the Fourteen Points address came the idea for the League of Nations. In Paris, the leaders of the victorious nations carved up Germany and the Ottoman Empire. Wilson’s desire to create the League and his subsequent failure would become a cornerstone of his presidency. Wilson created a relationship with British Prime Minister David Lloyd George and World Zionist Leader Chaim Weizmann, which secured the creation of the Palestine Mandate. This Mandate would be controlled by the British and the Zionist Jews. Palestine was to be “A home for the Jews." Through examination of primary source materials from Wilson, Lloyd George, Weizmann and the records of the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, I have found a relationship that was formed that would irrevocably influence the course of history. Weizmann and Wilson were determined to make the Palestine Mandate a reality. Once Wilson had learned that American participation with the League of Nations would not be accomplished, he worked with British Prime Minister David Lloyd George to give Great Britain control of the Mandate. The British Mandate for Palestine, as it would come to be known, was seen as a cooperative effort between the British, Jews and Arabs in order to form a nation where all sides could prosper. My research question involves measuring the amount of intent that Wilson had towards Pro-Zionist causes in order to make Palestine that “home” for the Jews. It is to show that Wilson’s diplomatic actions were the catalyst for many issues that the world would face in the subsequent decades. During the League of Nations, the Americans believed that British control of the Mandate was the only viable option for it to succeed. Weizmann and Wilson, along with Lloyd George, created a nation which would soon become one of the greatest points of conflict during the twentieth century. The British Mandate for Palestine created a dramatic change in how the Mandate was perceived globally. Administered by the British government, the Mandate remains a prime example of Britain’s imperialistic tendencies. It is my assertion that Palestine is one of the final reaches of Britain’s formal empire. Through primary source material obtained in the National Archives in London, specifically those documents from the Colonial and Foreign Office, I gained an understanding of what went wrong with the Mandate and how it failed. Hierin speel die Hebreeuse Bybel (TeNaK) `n sentrale rol. Twee Ou Testamentiese verbonde, die Abrahamitiese verbond en die Deuteronomiese (Land-van-Israel/Palestina) verbond, vorm die basis hiervan. Die aanname dat die Jode van vandag `n voortsetting van Bybelse Israel is en gevolglik aanspraak op hierdie verbondsbeloftes kan maak, asook God se doel met die insluiting van die land Israel in Sy verbond met Abraham en die rol van die land in die verhouding tussen Hom en Sy uitverkore volk, ondersteun Jode se godsdienstige aansprake. ▼ Building a Home-Land: Zionism as a Regime of Housing 1860-2005by Yael AllweilDoctor of Philosophy in ArchitectureUniversity of California, BerkeleyProfessor Nezar AlSayyad, ChairThe received study of Zionist practices largely disregards a cardinal aspect of Jewish nationalism: the role of housing in producing and inhabiting the home-land. This research identifies housing as the key site for the formation of subjects (Zionists) and place (Zion) and offers a new perspective on the history of Zionism as a massive housing project. It thus offers a complementing historiography to scholarly attempts to understand Israel through the specters of war (Morris, 2008), modernization of the orient (LeVine, 2005), colonization (Gregory, 2005), ethnicity (Yiftachel, 2005), gender (Boyarin, 1996) or the trauma of the holocaust (Wistrich, 1997). The framework I propose for discussing housing addresses it at the same time as an action (to house), scheme of action (set of policies, funding schemes etc), value system (a basic right, identity marker), architectural form (physical houses), and settlement (location and typology). It is thus deeply involved in attempts to form national identity and citizens-subjects. In addition, two cardinal questions involve the actors at hand: Who performs the act of housing, and who benefits from it? The modern nation state (Nairn, 2003) marks a shift of governance from kings supported by divine legitimacy, to rule legitimized "in the name of the people" (Bendix, 1978, Foucault, 1971). Housing of the common citizen is thus the key site for any modern nation-state to base and legitimize its rule (Castells et al, 1990, Goh, 2001), more so than the court or the parliament largely studied as the locus of nation building (Vale, 1992, Morton, 1989). As Foucault showed, the shift from absolutist-state to nation-state required the state to become an institution for governing modern subjects. Zionism's unique task to materialize a national home where none existed for millennia involved in addition connecting subjects and homeland in order to form a sovereign political entity legitimated by these people. This unique task was addressed by associating national home and individual housing (Kallus, 2005) and by the state assuming mediating role for the relationship between citizens and homeland (Nitzan-Shiftan, 2006). This dissertation explores the relationship between nation, citizens and housing by historical examination of Jewish nationalism as a regime of housing. My research unfolds the history of "good housing", used for producing a legitimate claim for the homeland and for designing good citizens. My archival research of texts and planning documents indicates that early Zionist leaders understood housing as the answer for both above challenges (Weiss, 1956, Ruppin, 2001, GenGurion, 1969) and defined the materialization of Jewish nationalism as a housing problem. Hierin speel die Hebreeuse Bybel (TeNaK) `n sentrale rol. Twee Ou Testamentiese verbonde, die Abrahamitiese verbond en die Deuteronomiese (Land-van-Israel/Palestina) verbond, vorm die basis hiervan. Die aanname dat die Jode van vandag `n voortsetting van Bybelse Israel is en gevolglik aanspraak op hierdie verbondsbeloftes kan maak, asook God se doel met die insluiting van die land Israel in Sy verbond met Abraham en die rol van die land in die verhouding tussen Hom en Sy uitverkore volk, ondersteun Jode se godsdienstige aansprake. Twee breë denkrigtings binne die Christelike geloof, Vervangingsteologie en Christen-Sionisme, bied verskillende sieninge in dié verband. Die konflik in die Midde-Ooste raak elke persoon, afgesien van sy godsdienstige affiliasie of afwesigheid daaraan. Vanuit `n bepaalde Christelik-teologiese perspektief is `n alternatiewe beskouing aangebied om die spirituele, eerder as die oënskynlike sekulêre en politieke aard daarvan, te beklemtoon. Šī darba tēze ir: Izšķiroša loma reliģiskā cionisma attīstībā bija Latvijas rabīnu teoloģiskiem skaidrojumiem un Latvijas reliģiskā cionisma politisko līderu darbībai. Darbā tiek aplūkots plašs reliģiskā cionisma spektrs, pētījums sākas ar rabīnu J. Alkalaja un Z. Kališera pirmajām proto-cionisma idejām, turpinās ar modernā reliģiskā cionisma ideju pamatlicēju Bauskas rabīnu M. Eliasberga un A.I. ▼ This dissertation explores Israeli architectural and construction aid in the 1960s – “the African decade” – when the majority of sub-Saharan African states gained independence from colonial rule. In the Cold War competition over development, Israel distinguished its aid by alleging a postcolonial status, similar geography, and a shared history of racial oppression to alleviate fears of neocolonial infiltration. I critically examine how Israel presented itself as a model for rapid development more applicable to African states than the West, and how the architects negotiated their professional practice in relation to the Israeli Foreign Ministry agendas, the African commissioners' expectations, and the international disciplinary discourse on modern architecture. I argue that while architectural modernism was promoted in the West as the International Style, Israeli architects translated it to the African context by imbuing it with nation-building qualities such as national cohesion, labor mobilization, skill acquisition and population dispersal. Based on their labor-Zionism settler-colonial experience, as well as criticisms of the mass construction undertaken in Israel in its first decade, the architects diverged from technocratic "high modernism" to accommodate the needs of African weak governments. Focusing on prestigious governmental and educational buildings such as the Sierra Leone parliament, Ife University in Nigeria, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ethiopia, as well as urban and national planning schemes, this study brings to the fore the performative capacities of these projects in relation to the national and international audiences they addressed as vehicles of governance and markers of a desired modernity. In other words, this study examines the role these projects played in the mobilization of workers, funds, lands, infrastructure and policy making. Cutting across North-South and East-West dichotomies, the study of this modality of transnational exchange sheds new light on processes of modernization and globalization and exposes their diverse cultural and political underpinnings.

From the colonial era, Americans have expressed the touch of a divine entity guiding their destiny. These feelings helped direct the course of United States history. For some, the Bible was not a tool used to teach metaphors, but rather the literal word of the Almighty. In the late 19th century, an esoteric focus on Apocalypticism began to rise in prominence. Today, the dispensationalist theology continues to grow. This end-times belief is based on passages from the Bible, pasted together to create a narrative of the world's demise (Coats, 2010). These followers concentrate on the Rapture, a concept of a Christ to save true believers prior to global annihilation. This extremist evangelical theory envisions a world needing to be destroyed in order to start anew (Fitzgerald, 2010). This belief, Christian Zionism, has done damage to the Christian message, and trickled down into American society (Reid, 2013). Particularly disturbing is the influence this philosophy has had on U.S. lawmakers who craft foreign policy. This is seen directly with America's Middle East strategies. My intention of this project was to demonstrate how Christian Zionism had adversely influenced American foreign policy in the Middle East. I used a qualitative analysis of literature reviews, interviews and surveys to help display my hypothesis. I have concluded that dispensationalism is salient in much public policy discourse and decisions. These procedures have been brazenly pro-Israel, and anti-Muslim in nature. From my research, I have found lobbyist organizations and Christian Zionist clergy have colluded to mobilize pro-Israeli sentiment, and influence elected officials. These actions have been documented to have extinguished peace negotiations, and aroused war sentiments. Examples are shown with: the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, Egypt, Iraq, Iran and the Global War on Terror. Prophetic Biblical policies have been disastrous for the Middle East region and the United States.
