▼ These stories follow the lives of
women in a variety of roles—housewife, deli employee,
artist, bird keeper, and sitter for the elderly—and at different stages of life. In “Beneath this Roof,” a young housewife’s life is rocked by a visit from an old friend who has changed in unexpected ways. “Semantics (n. pl.)” follows a sixty-two-year old widow in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Her fragile grasp on her work and her words is ultimately challenged by the appearance of a man who reminds her of her recently dead husband. In “En Plein Air,” a newly married artist finally finds inspiration to paint in the midst of an
unhappy marriage and hostile climate. A young bird keeper in “Enclosure” butts heads
with her family when trying to explain her lack of desire for a romantic relationship. And finally, in “Surrogate,” a twenty-year old sitter for an elderly man struggles with her parents’ violent murders and her complicated relationship with this gentle eighty-year old suffering from Alzheimer’s. As a collection, these stories seek to explore various themes, including the role of memory and language and what happens when both seem to fail.

▼ Status signifies an overall position of a person in
a society by virtue of which the person has certain rights and
obligations and enjoys certain privileges. One of the important
aspects of the social structure of any social system is the fact
that it s members are differentiated and evaluated according to
social positions they occupy in the group and any of the subgroups
to which they may belong. The institutionalization of such
processes of differentiation and evaluation constructs an elaborate
system that configures different status for the members of the
group. There are certain determinants of status which are generally
known as indicators of status. These include income, property,
education and training in skills that open up chances of
employment, health levels, rights and privileges. In terms of every
set of indices of status, relatively women have been found to be at
a much lower status than their fellow men. The lower status of
women is the result of social evaluation of their biological
characteristics. These characteristics are entrenched in social
beliefs and values and such value system promotes male as being
more important socially, while women to be submissive. The social
differentiation of men and women tends to indicate the specific
role that women have to play and as such reduces their chances of
having equal status with their male counterparts. The issues
related to status of women are now being strongly discussed at
national and international levels. In contemporary times there has
been a growing trend among the social scientists to acquire and
accumulate the knowledge about the status of women. The status of
women can be seen to comprise the following aspects; control over
economic production, role in house hold decision making
particularly about their own life, extent of property right, sexual
autonomy, public esteem, public authority and paid employment. The
problem of the status of women by and large relates to the equality
between men and women.

Gender roles and livelihood security among women in Zambia: The case of Angolan and Rwandan refugees in MEHEBA refugee settlement.

▼ Zambia has hosted many foreigners and refugees. Refugee population is spread in all corners of the country. Males account for seventy five per cent while females account for twenty five per cent of refugee population in camps (Zambia Statistical Year Book, 2013). Once settled, these refugees face a number of challenges due to flight and displacement. Women refugees in particular face a number of challenges especially when it comes to gender roles and livelihood security.
The aim of the study was to find out about gender roles and its impact on livelihood security among women refugees in Meheba refugee settlement. This study was guided by the following objectives: To determine the gender roles among women refugees, to examine the livelihood security among women refugees and to investigate the impacts of gender roles on livelihood security among women refugees in Meheba refugee settlement.
This study used both qualitative and quantitative approach in order to arrive at an in-depth understanding of the gender roles and livelihood security among refugee women in Zambia. Purposive sampling was used to collect a total number of one hundred and twenty individuals to participate in this study. One hundred and fifteen participants were refugees, that is, thirty men and eighty five women while five were officials from UNHCR. Semi structured and unstructured Interviews and focus groups were used as data collection methods. Data was analyzed thematically and through the statistical package for social sciences
From the paper it was clear that women were abused and exploited in the name of gender roles. The study revealed that women were overloaded with work in cases where their husbands were disabled or unwilling to do lowly paid jobs. Men were perceived as public spheres who were only interested in making money for themselves by engaging in businesses such as fishing and selling agriculture crops while women were perceived as domestic spheres with the responsibility of caring for their children. The study also revealed that women changed their ways of life in terms of their livelihood security and adopted coping strategies such as depending on social network, engaging in businesses such as hair plaiting, agriculture and also prostitution in order for them to enhance their livelihood security.
In conclusion it is important to take into account the change in gender roles and socioeconomic status that often occurs during displacement. It was clear that the livelihood of women refugees in the settlement needs to be enhanced. It is therefore, recommended that UNHCR and the host Government implement a livelihood programs that specifically benefit women, while at the same time involving men. Women and girls should be accorded an opportunity that will allow them collect water and fuel without any fear of being raped or abused. Women refugees should be given freedom of movement to do business and distribution of food within the settlement should take into account issues of gender and ensure that this food reaches all. Furthermore,…

▼ Women did their work well in education, literature
and politics upto the Vedic Period. But in the period of Manu,
women got many restrictions and their rights were crushed. During
the medieval period, the status of women went down and they were
considered to be inferior to men. Historians have called this age
as the and#145;dark ageand#146;. Then, the men started to do all
the works because they thought that the women did not have strength
like the men. Women assisted men in their jobs. Hunting and
fighting in war were done only by men. Also men looked after the
financial status of their house. With the support of men, women
handled their families. Men gave financial support and women looked
after the families. newlineWhen the people started to light the
pyre of the dead people, it was done only by men. So the society
liked to have the boy child in the world. So many of the families
if they did not get male child, they started to marry their
wifeand#146;s sisters or other girls. Thus, polygamy had started.
People did spiritual rituals to get male child. If they got girl
child, they killed the female child. Thus, the female infanticide
had started in the society. Mahabharatha says, the husband can
stake his wife in gambling and a man can marry five girls. It is
all about slavery of women. Eventhough there was much slavery for
women, some eminent women rulers like Rani Mangamma, Meenakshi and
Velunachiar also ruled in Tamil Nadu. E.V.Ramaswamy Naicker is
considered as the father of womenand#146;s liberation in Tamil
Nadu. He was the first man, with adamant boldness and rational
thinking, who questioned all the foolish customs, pseudo values of
Hinduism, Brahminism, code of chastity, male chauvinism and gender
discrimination. He was a real warrior and man of action through his
Self Respect Movement.

▼ Recent years have seen an increase in females that are occupying management and
leadership roles in organisations. Most of the studies have focussed on the difficulties
that are experienced by women in working environment. This study, on the contrary,
sets out to explore the attributes of successful female leaders. Specifically, the purpose
of this study was to investigate the attributes that make women successful leaders. The
research focussed on leadership and management profiles. In particular, the leadership
and management traits were established and benchmarked against the attributes of
successful famous women leaders. The study was carried out within a framework of a
survey questionnaire employing quantitative data collection method. The study
consisted of 98 participants from both private and government sector. The quantitative
data was analysed using the relevant statistical tools. The major findings under
management profiles, apart from lacking the ability to structure work, centre on the fact
that female managers are good motivators. The results further indicated that women
managers prefer to provide coaching and support, sharing what needs to be done than
telling them what to do. The major finding under leadership profiles was that female
managers preferred to lead by example; meaning that they focus on setting an example
for the followers and are willing on taking risk. Another imperative finding was that
women leaders demonstrated team-building leadership style when it comes to decision making and problem-solving. Recommendations, using these findings, were made for women aspiring to leadership, women already in leadership and management positions and organisations.

▼ Blogging has become a major tool for people to interact and make known their various perspectives on life and the world at large. The study investigates the usage and practice of blogging by Ghanaian
women.
Using the theory of technology diffusion and adoption, liberal feminist theory and the sense of agency and community, the study establishes that Ghanaian
women are actively engaging with blogs by creating personal journal blogs, writing on diverse themes but predominantly on love, among others. The qualitative content analysis was employed to analyse 50 blog posts of Ghanaian
women in order to come out with the findings.

▼ This thesis addresses the issue of the quality of the women and work
literature. Major changes have taken, and still are taking, place in
the workplace with respect to women workers; affirmative action
progran-1s ate !Ju L 011e example. The literature has been instrumental
in securing some of these changes for three inter-related reasons.
The literature is used as a medium by those who wish to push the
women's cause; it is used as part of a frame of reference by some
who are in a position to effect significant change; and it has an
effect on the perceptions of some of the general readers who may
subsequently modify their behaviour, expectations and demands in the
workplace. The quality of the literature is therefore of fundamental
importance.
In looking at the quality of the literature, the thesis takes into
account the visibility or profile status of the contributions arguing that
the more visible, high profile items are more likely to influence
perceptions than contributions which are located towards the other end
of the visibility spectrum.
The thesis demonstrates that there is cause for concern about the
quality of the literature contributions which are most likely to affect
perceptions, and by extension, behaviour. It is argued that such
contributions tend to be simplistic, impoverished, to be clothed in
emotive language, and fail to reflect reality.
It is argued that many of the authors of the visible literature
contributions do not have as their prime objective the pursuit of the
search for knowledge and truth but that their concern is to secure the
social changes which they deem to be necessary. It is shown that
such authors use a restricted data base, emotive language and
manipulation, statistical manipulation, selectivity and publicity to
achieve their goal; they rarely choose and use the tools of critical
evaluation, a broad knowledge base, formal research methodology,
comparative analysis, testing opinions against the differing opinions of
others and against the workscene, and qualifying statements which
remove ambiguities.
The thesis concludes by acknowledging that little can be done about
the quality of the literature which has already been written and
expresses the hope that in the future the soundly based contributions
will begin to challenge those which are not.
The initial problem of selecting a research method which would allow
the quality of the literature to be investigated was solved by stepping
outside the traditional academic research methods and using the
ombudsman's investigative model. It is an unusual approach but the
results have vindicated the decision to adopt it.

▼ In Zambia, currently, there are only two National technical high schools(Grades 10 to 12) in which girls are enrolled. However, it has been observed that there are very few girls participating in technical subjects in the two schools in spite of
their status. The concern has been expressed about girls in technical subjects who are very few. The incentives provided to the National technical high schools by the government to support technical subjects do not seem to be making any significant improvement in the participation of girls.
This study was set out to find out the factors that affect the participation of girls in technical subjects at David Kaunda and Hillcrest National Technical High Schools. The data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. They key informants included: pupils who study technical subjects, teachers of technical subjects, school administrators, and the officials from the Ministry of Education.
The findings from the study showed that peer pressure, intimidation of girls by boys, poor attitude by the girls and negative family advice were critical contributing factors to very few girls participating in technical subjects. The results also generally indicated that other factors such as lack of motivation by teachers, non-availability of study materials, and poor study strategy by the girls contributed to very few girls in technical subjects. These factors were however not significant. In view of the research findings, the recommendations were made, inter alia, that school administrators should continue to advocate for the building of technical secondary
schools and send female teachers of technical subjects to those schools; train more female teachers in this area; make technical subjects compulsory; and provide better incentives for technical subject graduates as well as to provide institutional framework for the
disinterested absorption of female graduates in technical jobs. The challenge is that girls require to be sensitized early in their education life span so that they understand that technical subjects and technical jobs are not only for boys and men but for girls and women as well.

▼ 'Feeling it like it is and has been is as valuable as telling it like it should be; its an articulation of the previously inarticulate. Seeing our own images gives us heightened confidence in our existence1 .
– Margarent Atwood
The dissertation traces an important aspect of the works written by the two women writers of Africa; Manama Ba and Doris Lessing, with the occassional references of the other authors. The aspect is from group affiliations to individual mores. The focus is on women's search for self-identity and their attempt for self-actualisation . In this context, their expectation as an aspect of exploitative society, is examined. The movement is given a direction which reveals individuals rejecting the manipulative and impersonal group affiliations and moving towards personal and individual choices.
The dissertation divides into three phases: The Communal The Protest The Individual
The first phase deals with the investigation of a woman writer, Mariana Ba in relation to the group. She dwells on a woman's image and deep-rooted problems facing her in society. She depicts the ideology of the group, the group's influence on her and to what extent she feels responsible to the group. In Ba's work, a woman's self does not exist in the eyes of society.
In the second phase, Mariama Ba protests against the social set-up but does not openly challenge it or break away from it. However, she does show resentment to the traditional values and makes an attempt to find happiness.
The third phase, moves towards the individual phase. Doris Lessing stands for those writers who estrange themselves from the group and openly challenge the traditions. Doris Lessing suggests alternatives to group affiliations and projects her women characters searching for personal values. Regarding this, Lessing deals with women's personal dilemma, and claims that self-awareness has alienated women from both the society and themselves. They are now involved in introspection and a search for personal experiences, and believe that the demands of one's personal conscience are a trustworthy guide to serious behaviour.

▼ This work delves metaphorically into the objectification of women and their decline in value as they age under the male gaze. This is exhibited through the viewpoint of one male character, Adam. He believes that he is saving women from a fate of harsh judgment and mistreatment by killing them as they age and become undesirable. He thinks that he is offering them a better option because he is allowing their bodies to feed his roses, an age-old symbol of beauty that is often associated with femininity. This gives them the power to be reborn, not only as plants, but also to flower each spring, as opposed to enduring the long and arduous aging process that human beings must endure

▼ Narrative inquiry provides a methodological framework
and philosophy to guide the research process, as well as directs
the methods that may be used (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000).
The purpose of this narrative inquiry research was to increase both
understanding and awareness of the experiences of four women who
were left behind while their partners engaged in temporary labor
migration in another Canadian province. The following questions
framed this inquiry and were used to elicit stories reflective of
the women’s experiences. 1. What stories are women telling about
themselves during the experience of being left behind as their
partner leaves home for employment in another province? 2. What
stories are women constructing in regards to who they are and who
they are becoming as they experience a partner’s employment
outmigration? Do they include in these stories how they think this
is changing other women’s views of themselves? 3. What stories are
women constructing regarding their perceptions of health and how
they perceive their personal health to be impacted as a result of
their husband’s coming and going for employment outmigration? In
review of literature, policy, and position statements, I have
learned of the emphasis placed on economic development and labor
market trends within the Atlantic Region. However, temporary labor
migration and the experiences of those left behind have been
overlooked. Further lacking is an understanding on how this
phenomenon impacts those who are left behind, particularly women
who remain behind and care for children. Digitally recorded
conversational interviews and photographs provided glimpses into
the stories lived, told, relived, and retold by women who were left
behind in rural communities and experiencing a partner’s temporary
interprovincial labor migration. Women recruited for this inquiry
co-participated in 5 or 6 conversational interviews. Each
co-participant had experienced the coming and going of their
husbands for employment out of province for between 6 and 12 years.
Conversational interviews lasted between 1 and 2½ hours. All
interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. To
gain a deeper understanding of how women experience the coming and
going of their husbands due to labor migration, the participants
were invited to share personal photographs. These photographs
offered a visual representation of the women’s storied lives.
Analysis of data occurred through an interpretive process of moving
back and forth between field texts, interim research texts, and
research texts shaped by questions of meaning and social
significance. In shaping field texts into research texts, nine
overarching narrative threads emerged and revealed the women’s
perceptions regarding identity: who they were, who they were
becoming, and how they thought they were perceived by others as
they experienced their husband’s inter-provincial labor migration.
These narrative threads were organized under the headings:
Being—The Married Single Mother, Fulfilling Roles and
Responsibilities,…

▼ The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the training programmes which
are provided to women groups in Chinsali District. The study was necessitated by the fact
that despite government providing training programmes to women’s groups, little was known
about how effective these training programmes were in empowering the women. The
following were the research objectives: (1) to establish whether or not training programmes
addressed the womens’ felt needs; (2) determine the extent to which stakeholders participated
in the planning of the training programmes; (3) establish how women participated during the
training programmes; and (4) ascertain whether or not the principles of facilitation were
employed by the facilitators. This study adopted a descriptive survey design and both
qualitative and quantitative data were collected. The sample was 140 respondents. The data
was collected using Focus Group Discussion, interview guide, semi structured questionnaires
and document analysis. Qualitative data was analysed by categorizing similar themes as they
emerged. Quantitative data was analysed manually and was presented using tables and
percentages with the help of Microsoft Excel.
The findings of the study indicated that the training programmes did not respond to the felt
needs of the women. This was because the training programmes were predetermined by the
Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare (MCDSW) Headquarters. The
study further revealed that stakeholders were not involved in planning; instead they were
merely informed of the planned training programmes prior to training. The study also
established that the women participated through question and answer sessions, role plays and
as rapporteurs and time keepers. The study further revealed that the facilitators did not
employ principles of facilitation during training because they were not trained in facilitation
skills.
Therefore, the study recommended that the MCDSW should not dictate the training content.
The training content must come from the women themselves. The MCDSW should conduct
needs assessments that are participatory. Community Development Officers should involve
women and stakeholders in the planning of the training programmes. Lastly, the MCDSW
should train all Community Development Officers who facilitate training programmes for
women's groups in facilitation skills.

▼ This dissertation relates the violence perpetuated by phallogocentric traditions of reading and writing to the violence of appropriating traditional categories of gender and asks whether or not and how texts that resist these traditions might help us change the way we think about identities, our own and others', opening up a space for new and as yet un-thought ways of exchanging texts and the identities they make possible. Focusing on the ways in which Jacques Derrida's Eperons, Virginia Woolf's Three Guineas, and Elena Garro's "La culpa es de los Tlaxcaltecas" and "El arbol" interminably reverse the roles of readers and writers, further disorienting them with the complex blend of genres in their texts and the networks of other texts that they juxtapose with their own, leads to the conclusion that the ultimate revolutionary function of these texts is to be found in the ways that they suspend the processes of appropriation and identification indefinitely, giving time, namely the time of waiting, but also time that is filled with the constant weaving of narratives, maintaining the possibility that a way out of historical cycles of violence, especially the violence of being forced to fit within current categories, might be found.

▼ Women constitute half of the world s population,
work two third of the world s working hours, earn one tenth of the
world s income and own less than one tenth of the world s property.
Women in India from antiquity were accorded the most exalted and
respectful place in the society. In Vedic Age women occupied a high
position in society and played a significant role in all fields
including cultural, social, religious and political. Their position
however, deteriorated during the Post Vedic Period. They were
confined within the four walls of the house and their role remained
restricted to the traditional household work of cooking,
maintenance of home and rearing of children. They were not supposed
to seek any gainful employment outside the family. This hindered
their economic development and reduced their social position. The
history of women s participation in gainful employment is a recent
one. After the Industrial Revolution, the social situation changed
throughout the world and so in India. The family no more remained a
centre of production. Due to industrialization and urbanization new
social norms and values emerged. Job opportunities, economic
hardship and favourable cultural and social situations encouraged
cultural and social situation encouraged women to seek employment
outside the home. After independence of the country the number of
women to come out of their houses for work increased day by day.
Although entering of women into work force raised their economic
and social status, yet it gave rise to many problems and
difficulties to them by way of exploitation, discrimination and
dismal working conditions. The problems and difficulties got
multiplied due to their peculiar social, biological and
psychological conditions and due to their illiteracy and
ignoranceTo undo the discrimination and exploitation, their arose a
need to provide them some security and protection through law. The
Constitution of India, inter-alia, made several provisions for the
protection and security of women workers.

▼ This project explores how 17th-century English
women writers used dedicatory epistles. The three case studies here represent different modes in which
women writers interacted with readers: manuscript, print, and commercial print. By looking at their paratexts, we can see how, by employing common conventions of transmittal like gift exchanges, parental legacies to children, and patronage these
women created spaces for themselves from which to speak as authors.
Lucy Hutchinson’s two manuscript dedicatory epistles offer unique insight into the techniques one early modern English
women writer utilized to contextualize, to justify, and ultimately to promote her texts to her readers. Hutchinson rewrote the Puritan cause collectively as a failed English utopia, ultimately cast down by the English rabble more concerned with material prosperity than with their souls’ condition.
Margaret Cavendish published in print under her own name from 1653 to 1671 when such an activity was contrary to female conduct norms. Cavendish frequently included several dedicatory epistles within a single book, each one using conventional language in an unconventional manner. She used many common social and literary conventions, such as the format of the letter and the language of patronage, in flamboyant ways to highlight her unique status and thus her right to participate in “properly masculine” fields such as scientific commentary. Her epistles explored the limits of the “work” introductory paratexts could accomplish.
Because Aphra Behn’s livelihood depended upon her ability to appeal to the literate public generally and the upper classes in particular, her dedications are universally political. Situating her printed dedicatory epistles published between 1673 and 1689 within their original sociopolitical and historical milieu allows us to examine how Behn adapted her rhetoric, use of humor, political commentary, and patron choices throughout this period.
Putting these three women’s works and their writing processes into conversation, I argue, provides an overview of the process early modern English
women writers utilized to create and to secure a place for
women in the literary marketplace as producers of viable commercial products. More broadly, this project explores of the tactics of early
women writers as they began creating for
women the possibility of possessing a national literary voice, rather than focusing solely each woman’s individual sociopolitical and literary negotiations.

▼ My dissertation is about how the Chinese family is and
will be affected by the remarkable economic and social transition
that is taking place. I focus on how the unique combination of
forces, including the traditional Chinese values, the demographic
structure, the role of the state, the rapid economic growth, the
sheer scale of the Chinese economy etc., will make the process of
economic and social transition of the family different in China
than it was in other emerging economics. The first Chapter of my
dissertation is about the relationship between husbands and wives
as legal institutions become more modern. In particular, I explore
whether and to what extent the relative circumstances of men and
women following marital dissolution affect sex selection behavior
within marriages after the implementation of China's 2001
pro-
women divorce law. I show: (1) that the new divorce law
predicts an increase in divorce propensity after the birth of a
daughter; (2) that the new law results in fewer sex-selective
abortions for the second birth if the first birth produced a
daughter. The second Chapter is about the intergenerational
transmission of poverty. Using a long panel data set of Chinese
farm households covering the period of 1987-2002, my co-author and
I
find that when lacking health insurance, major illness happening
to household adults forgoes childrens education especially for
primary school-age children. Therefore, the poor and uneducated are
more likely to catch major illness and pass the poverty to the next
generation through insufficient investment in children's
education. The third Chapter explores the implications of
preschool-aged children as household public goods in
joint-household formation. I examine the extended household
formation/split in rural China, where people
subject to the
patriacle culture and patri-local residential tradition. I answer
the question how the economic mobility affects the family structure
through the decision of co-residence. In particular, I
find that
for those having at least one pre-school aged child, one additional
year of maternal education increases the chance of co-residence by
1.65-percent. Because for households with educated young mothers,
more surpluses of co-residence can be derived through labor
specialization.

▼ Since recently, gender issues have drawn the attention of many scholars. As a result, there is an increasing interest to assess and investigate women’s place and role in society with the aim of devising a sound solution to the problems they encounter. The major objective of this study is to closely examine the contribution of wives in agricultural production and their access to and control over resources vis-à-vis their husbands in Gozamen woreda.
To achieve the stated objective, a cross-sectional survey design was employed with a mixed approach of data collection and analysis. Both primary and secondary data were collected. These included both quantitative and qualitative data and information. The study employed a multi-stage sampling method to select sample kebeles and households. Since the woreda is naturally stratified into three agro-ecological zones, one kebele was purposively selected from each agro-ecology. Then, households having married couples were targeted for the study. To this end, 5% of sample households having married couples were drawn from each kebele. Accordingly, 37, 57 and 22 (a total of 116) households were selected from Yebokella Zuria, Wonqa, and Dessa Enesie kebeles, respectively through systematic random sampling technique. Survey questionnaire, key informant interview, FGDs and observation were major tools to collect primary data. Books, theses, journals, official documents and credible internet sources were also major sources of secondary data.
By using the methodology described above, intra-household dynamics in gender division of labour and gender differential access to and control over resources were examined. The division of labour in domestic spheres is found to be rigid in most of household provisioning tasks while, in productive spheres, there found to be greater flexibility in sharing tasks. Nevertheless, rigid gender division of labour was found in some farm tasks like ploughing, sowing and applying fertilizer. Moreover, wives’ direct involvement in cutting and threshing was reported to be minimal. Their domestic work load, cultural norms and beliefs and women’s perception of themselves as “physically weak” were the major factors influencing them from involving in some farm activities. As far as access to and control over resources is concerned, the study found out that although land is presumably jointly owned by spouses, making decisions on how to use this critical resource is dominated by husbands. Wives’ access to and control over other resources considered in this study (like agricultural extension and credit services) was found to be minimal as compared to their spouses.
In spite of their significant contribution, wives in the study area are not seen as farmers or at least not active farmers. The gender division of labour and the differential access to and control over resources are inversely related in the sense that
women contribute more labour but enjoy less privilege in access to and control over resources vis-à-vis their husbands.

▼ The focus of the research was about women from Maasai community who are home based microproducers.
The research study endeavored to investigate the impact registered through the involvement
of women in Ethical Business with the help of ITCs Ethical Fashion Africa Initiative and through EFAL a
company formed to manage the operations of ITCs Ethical Fashion Programs in Kenya.
The group has 23 registered members with an outreach of over 300 women subcontracted during
orders. The area of their operations stretches from Kahara in Ngong hills, Oklanyati, Kisamis and
Olesokothe along Magadi road which is approximately 10 km2. The group was purposively selected. The
respondents were stratified according to gender, relations such as marriage or having a child. The group
was also sampled through systematic sampling procedures. A sample of 58% was drawn from about 120
households.
A questionnaire was administered by the researcher to each respondent as the structured interview
method was used to obtain responses from Key informants. (The men, children and representatives of
the supportive institutions etc)
The unit of observation was the household from where women involved in the project are drawn. The
researcher used observation checklists to gather observe data. The collected data was analyzed by use
of social statistical techniques, both inferential and descriptive. The findings were presented by use of
table, graphs and pie charts.
The study followed applied social research processes, which means that its findings went beyond mere
exercise of exposing information to address specific concerns and offer recommendation of solutions to
problem identified and areas of further study by the ethical business within the inclusive business model
adopted by Ethical Fashion Africa program.

▼ Women comprise a very small proportion (28%) of senior managers and leaders in New Zealand organisations and statistics reveal a plateauing in their numbers over the last decade (Grant Thornton, 2012). The dearth of
women business leaders has significant organisational consequences. Previous research has shown that
women bring a variety of skills and talents to organisations due to their diversity of skills, and decision-making abilities (McKinsey & Company, 2010; Deloitte Australia, 2011). In addition, a series of Catalyst studies from 2004 to 2011 has shown that companies that have more
women in their management ranks and on their boards have significantly better revenue and profitability (Catalyst, 2011). Women’s active participation in senior leadership is therefore good not only for New Zealand’s economy but also for their organisations’ bottom lines. This underutilised resource is too valuable for New Zealand to ignore. In this research, I sought to understand how existing
women leaders had moved into senior leadership roles in New Zealand organisations and how they had succeeded, in order to find ways of increasing the number of
women leaders in the future. Taking an Appreciative Inquiry research approach, I aimed to discover ways of raising the percentage above 28% by interviewing a number of
women business leaders about the stories, methods, and strategies that they believed underpinned their transition to top leadership roles. To give the study breadth, I selected
women leaders from areas as diverse as public relations, publicly listed companies and not-for-profit organisations and then interviewed them individually to learn about the successes and challenges of their leadership journeys. One unexpected but welcome finding was the lack of evidence from any of the participants of the famous “glass ceiling.” Nevertheless, the participants did provide insight into many other challenges
women have to face in order to obtain senior leadership positions. While they didn’t find a glass ceiling, the
women often indicated signs of continuing gender discrimination. Many of the participants expressed their frustration that getting to the top is a lot harder for
women than men and many participants noted that work/life balance was one of the biggest obstacles they had to negotiate. The thesis closes by deriving practical recommendations for the advancement of
women to influential leadership positions.

▼ This project analyzes three novels written by African-American women that include ambivalent representations of motherhood: Gwendolyn Brooks’s Maud Martha (1953), Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye (1970), and Jesmyn Ward’s Salvage the Bones (2011). Diverging from the image of the strong black mother that frequently appears in black women’s writing, these novels contain women whose mothering experiences are hardly empowering; instead, they find the expectations of domesticity or self-sacrifice placed on them to be burdensome and confining. Rather than pathologizing black mothers, these texts’ ambivalent representations of motherhood expose societal limitations placed on black mothers, both in terms of the sexist narratives that confine black women to motherhood alone and the racist structures that obstruct the motherwork they perform. As these texts span a sixty-year time period, this thesis also seeks to demonstrate how the racist and sexist oppression black mothers face has transformed in relation to political, social, and economic trends over the past sixty years. Accordingly, it makes room for a more diverse range of mothering experiences in the black women’s literary tradition and argues that conversations about black women’s unique hardships remain just as pressing as they were sixty years ago.

▼ In Can You See Me?, a collection of nine short stories, Elizabeth Wyckoff explores the conflicting desires of young
women who long for connection, but struggle to find the balance between concealing and revealing themselves. The female protagonists in these stories simultaneously yearn to be seen, recognized, and acknowledged; and desire to stay hidden, concealed, and protected in their own private worlds. As they move through transitional stages of their lives – from girlhood to womanhood, or from one location to another – they attempt to inhabit the spaces between independence and isolation, connection and detachment, receptiveness and resistance, and visibility and invisibility.

▼ The following question guided this research: How do female readers understand the romantic content of Cosmopolitan and/or Glamour magazines, and how do they perceive connections between their readership of this content and their personal ideas and behaviors regarding romantic relationships? This study involved a series of responsive interviews in which the participants shared their perceptions of both their readership and the magazines' content. The results of this study suggest four primary responses to the research question: 1) the
women gave, but could not explain, concurrent descriptions of the magazines as "just entertainment" but also as sources of useful information; 2) although the
women described both positive and negative qualities of Cosmo and Glamour's romantic content, they also described the romantic and sexual content as relevant and compelling; 3) the
women argued that their mature perspective of the content prevented them from being unduly influenced by it; and 4) a few participants' academic awareness of criticisms of
women's magazines altered their perceptions but not their readership of Cosmo and Glamour. These themes and their implications for future research of
women's magazine readership are discussed.

▼ Background: Saudi Arabian women’s leadership in medical education is evolving. As in Western contexts, the number of women in formal leadership positions in Saudi medical education is increasing. However, given the unique cultural context, Saudi women health professionals may have less influence in their organizations than their counterparts in the West. Novel digital approaches may offer women a form of leadership by which their influence might be increased. Using the Mededlam.com “LAM” digital initiative, an online digital community dedicated to helping medical professionals in their leadership, teaching, and research roles by disseminating digital content that tackle different topics in medical education, this study explores the emergence of women’s leadership through their participation in an online professional community.
Objectives: 1) Establish a common understanding of leadership in a digital context amongst women who are members of the LAM community. 2) Investigate why they have turned to the LAM digital initiative to exercise influence in their profession; and, 3) Explore women’s opinions regarding their online interactions on LAM, including how those opinions have influenced their leadership identities and professional influence/development.
Methods: To explore the emergence of women’s leadership in a digital context, a sequential explanatory mixed method approach was adopted. In phase one, a questionnaire was developed based on literature review findings. The questionnaire was disseminated through the LAM website and affiliated social media pages. Seventy-nine women took part in the quantitative phase and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Women who expressed willingness to participate in phase two were invited through email to take part. In phase two, 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted. Qualitative data were analysed using framework analysis.
Results: In the first phase, respondents agreed or strongly agreed with definitions provided for leadership in a digital context. Respondents were reluctant to define their use of digital tools as a bid for influence in medical education. In the second phase, qualitative data revealed that women perceived digital tools as novel method of influence for women. However, they identified several issues that deter them from utilizing such tools, including fear of appearing unprofessional and a lack of knowledge on how to influence people online.
Conclusion: The potential of digital media as a tool to exercise influence and leadership for women in their profession is promising. For Saudi Arabian women health professionals in medical education, media such as LAM can provide a complementary forum to their real-world leadership and can extend their influence beyond their work environments.

▼ In my thesis, I will discuss the major social and political changes of the lives of
women in the 1960s and 1970s that influenced women’s position in society and also their representation in advertisements. I would like to examine the sexist and degrading depiction of
women as sex symbols, subjects of oppression and that of sexual objectification and sexualized violence characteristic of advertising during the 1960’s. I will also analyze the change in their depiction in the seventies and support my argument with the analysis of contemporary commercials.

▼ Art Nouveau characterized a relatively brief period: it is usually placed somewhere
between 1890 and 1914, but it reached every field of art and was influenced by many smaller
movements or philosophies. Art Nouveau cannot even be put between certain dates, it was
rather a process going on through different countries and continents. This variety of Art
Nouveau cannot be represented here, so one has to make restrictions. In my thesis I shall
argue for the strong influence of Orientalism on Art Nouveau in Great Britain. Thus, I would
like to introduce a brief summary of ornamentalism and Japonism, which all contributed to
the appearance of Art Nouveau. This will be followed by an elaboration of the stylistic marks
of Art Nouveau, illustrated by pictorial representations.

▼ This collection of poetry investigates the integral components of identity. The poems strive to explore and question the intersections of faith, race, gender, and sexuality through the stories of a diverse group of
women throughout a variety of texts. The texts explored cover a wide range that includes Biblical narratives, folk tales, slave narratives, and the history of one of the earliest African American female poets, Phillis Wheatley. The poems born from engaging with these women’s stories grapple with an array of issues, chief among them is the desire to understand what it means to know and be known. What it means to look closely and be seen.

▼ Ph.D. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2011.
Samoa's women have been studied in specific albeit rare moments in time by anthropologists in the late nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, but never as historical agents of a society which they have helped shape and sustain in a variety of ways for hundreds of years. This dissertation is an attempt to fill that void by examining the power of the Samoan woman – her pule, authority, mālosi, economic strength, and mamalu, social power – through the story of a unique political entity identified here as the Nu'u o Teine of Sāoluafata, the governing council of women in one of my ancestral villages on the northeastern side of the island of 'Upolu. This dissertation is concerned with a genealogy of the origins of the chiefly titles in both the Nu'u o Teine and Nu'u o Ali'i, the council of (male) chiefs. It traces the evolution of the teine's power since its founding in the mid-1300s through more contemporary times, and identifies the historical benefits and challenges of being both feagaiga, in sacred covenant with their brothers, and as suli, heirs to chiefly titles and lands. The rediscovery of this power is particularly critical at a time when globalization and international initiatives promoting women and human rights are affecting personal and cultural identities, as well as local customs and traditions. In this manner, the Nu'u o Teine of Sāoluafata serves as an analytical tool with which to view the changes and continuities in the Samoan women's sources and mechanisms of power.
Specifically, questions on how these sources and tools of power have been utilized, subjugated, colonized, or manipulated are examined as the teine mediated their way through three distinct periods of time – the Vavau, Samoa's past before Western contact (1300s-1700s), Faigafa'apapalagi (1722-1962), the ways of the white people, and Faigafa'aonaponei 1962-1998), the ways of today. Though unique in its political beginnings and structure, the Nu'u o Teine is a tool with which to historicize the political, social, economic, and cultural dimensions of the feagaiga, and the shift by degree from a relationship of complimentarity to one of symmetry as Samoan women reassert their rights to lands and titles which they had historically deferred to their brothers.
Given the scarcity of archival and secondary sources on Sāoluafata's past in particular and Samoan women's history in general, this study relies on oral traditions and the ethnologies of nineteenth century government officials. Moreover, in line with David Hanlon's suggestions of what Pacific islands history might look like, this study has made a conscious effort to view the past through the eyes of the current members of the Nu'u o Teine, and through a critical examination of what Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi deems as "indigenous references." This study is a su'ifefiloi, a medley, of versions made possible by a triangulation of oral, archival, and ethnographic texts and contexts.

"Hi Sexy! Why are you so sexified? Is that your club clothes? [sic]" was how I was greeted by a Caucasian US soldier when I was working on a US military base before starting my master's program. This has triggered me to continue my undergraduate research to master's level. What further propelled me to continue my undergraduate studies are the ongoing unethical demeanors practiced by the US military enlisted soldiers (henceforth GI) in Okinawa. I find theses inappropriate behaviors of these GIs very problematic and threatening to the local society and to the US-Japan security alliance in bigger picture. In addition to their actions, the deployment of a Marine aircraft, MV-22 Osprey, and possible deployment of Air Force Osprey CV-22 to Okinawa despite the endless protests and opposition by the local citizens made me think twice about US and Japan's stance on Okinawa. Okinawans have been raising their voices for some decades about the large US military presence in Okinawa; yet their voice is not heard by either the US or Japan; rather, it just a noise to them, making Okinawans voiceless. These ongoing monologues make me question again, "can Okinawa speak and how does the US perceive Okinawa?" My research started in Fall 2009, in response to my observation that there are limited materials for Okinawa and Okinawans to understand the US and their personnel. Though a number of publications regarding Okinawa's perspective toward the US military and the US-Japan relation have been published throughout these past years, I have yet to encounter any material that analyzes US soldiers' perspective on Okinawa (both from micro and macro level). Because of this, the majority of Okinawans lack knowledge of the US military and their personnel. When one lacks knowledge of a side, there is a chance of having misunderstandings and miscommunications. That being said, Okinawans' lack of knowledge can confuse and endanger them.
The main objective of this research is to acquire the voices of the GIs who are stationed in Okinawa and inform local communities and spread awareness and knowledge to local women who often lack knowledge about GIs. I want to understand what GIs see when they look at Okinawa and Okinawan women. I also want to understand how they see, that is, how their views are framed and expressed through metaphors of feminization and sexualization. If GIs were more aware of the condescending and belittling implications of the tropes through which their vision is filtered, they might learn to see and think differently about Okinawa and Okinawan women. Educating one side of the party can eliminate some dilemmas; however, it can still cause animosity between two parties. Because of the assumption that I have made, I believe it is crucial to educate not just the Okinawan side, but the US military side as well.
The significance of this research is that, by providing an alternative perspective for the local citizens,…
