▼ Bridging the Gap: A collective case study of counsellors’ and international students’ experiences of working togetherThis research aimed to explore the dynamics of counsellors working cross-culturally with diverse clients in the context of counselling international students at Higher Education Institutes. A particular emphasis on exploring challenges of working cross-culturally with such a diverse group and the solutions to meet those challenges was investigated. Current trends in globalisation of education and the increasing numbers of foreign students entering universities create both problems and opportunities for how to meet the needs of this growing student population. Higher risk factors for distress and crisis are present for international students due to having additional pressures of adapting to a novel environment, establishing support networks, and overcoming culture shock in addition to the more common academic and financial stressors of college and university.The methodology of choice is a collective instrumental case study design that operates within a critical theory paradigm to develop an in-depth understanding of how different cases provide insight into working with diverse clients. Five British counsellors and five international students were recruited within the UK using purposeful convenience sampling through adverts and the professional networks of the researcher. Counsellors were interviewed within a single focus group and international students were interviewed individually in order to understand the researched phenomenon from both counsellor and client perspectives. Thematic Analysis was chosen to generate two separate streams of themes from both counsellor and international student groups in relation to identified challenges and solutions of working together. A second level of overarching themes was produced from comparing and contrasting responses across all participants.The findings highlight a rich heterogeneity within both groups of participants, showcasing the perspectives on both sides of the therapeutic encounter. Counsellors and students held similar and different perspectives on what they identified as challenges of working together –counsellors’ vocalised a higher number of relational challenges and students’ identified greater institutional barriers. Novice international students experienced increased challenges compared with seasoned international students suggesting that development of risk factors within this sub-group is a high priority to take into consideration when addressing international student needs. Viewing diversity as a positive resource was a shared solution discussed in both participant groups that relied on counsellors demonstrating liberal value systems. Both groups identified the need for institutional support to be increased with students requesting a more proactive community outreach. Delaktigheten på den öppna arbetsmarknaden är låg för personer med psykisk funktionsnedsättning. Metoden Supported employment (SE) har visat sig vara framgångsrik i att hjälpa denna målgrupp att nå, få och behålla ett arbete på den reguljära arbetsmarknaden. Fokus har i forskning riktats mot metodens effektivitet men denna studie inriktar sig på arbetskonsulentens stöd inom SE och syftet i studien är att utforska vad dennes stöd betyder för deltagaren i metoden. Kvalitativa intervjuer har genomförts med tre deltagare och en gruppintervju med tre arbetskonsulenter. Det skräddarsydda, det instrumentella och det emotionella stödet samverkar och leder till empowerment för två deltagare, som har nått en praktikplats där de trivs och kommer till sin rätt. De upplever en större delaktighet, handlingskraft, en bättre självkänsla samt ett ökat psykiskt välbefinnande. Slutsatsen utifrån denna studie är att det emotionella stödet från arbetskonsulenten är en viktig grund för att lyckas med SE och konsulentens förmåga att balansera mängden stöd är centralt för deltagarens självständighet och möjlighet att nå empowerment.

Lack of participation in the open labor market is highly prevalent for people with mental illness. Vocational rehabilitation through Supported employment (SE) has shown to be an effective approach to improve employment outcomes. Research generally centres upon the effectiveness of the method. This study focuses on the support from the SE-coach and the aim is to investigate the meaning of this support to the participants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three participants and a group interview with three coaches. The emotional, tailored and instrumental supports were pointed out as being helpful. They interact and lead to empowerment for two of the participants who are now in work practice. They show satisfaction with their occupational situation and with being part of a social context. The participants express improvement in psychiatric symptoms, global functioning and self-esteem. The findings of this study highlight the importance of the emotional support from the SE-coach, and stress the ability of the coach to balance the amount of support given. This is crucial in order to facilitate the empowerment of the participants.

Dessa föräldrar upplever ofta oro, trötthet och en känsla av hjälplöshet, vilket kan påverka relationen mellan barnet och föräldrarna negativt och öka barnets skrikande. Känslor av frustration och ilska, vilka kan upplevas av trötta och stressade föräldrar, ökar risken för att föräldrar ska skaka eller ta hårt i barnet, vilket kan leda till att barn får allvarliga skador. BHV-sjuksköterskor är viktiga aktörer inom barnahälsovården och det är av stor vikt att de effektivt hjälper och stödjer föräldrar till barn med kolik. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vilket stöd och vilken hjälp föräldrar till barn med kolik önskar sig från BHV-sjuksköterskor. Denna studie utfördes som en systematisk litteraturstudie. För studien valdes nio vetenskapliga artiklar ut. De utvalda artiklarna är från Sverige, Norge, USA och Sydafrika. Bland de utvalda artiklarna är sju artiklar med kvalitativ metod och två har utförts med blandad metod med kvalitativa intervjuer och deskriptiv statistik. Samtliga utvalda artiklar belyser föräldraperspektivet, med avseende på spädbarnskolik. Studiens resultat visar att förståelse och stöd från vårdpersonal har stor betydelse för föräldrar, för att de ska kunna klara av att hantera den svåra kolikperioden. Föräldrar önskar ofta att sjuksköterskor erbjuder systematisk rådgivning och systematisk uppföljning samt att barnets tillstånd undersöks noggrant. Flertalet föräldrar är även intresserade av att få information om metoder med bristande evidens. Det framgick i studien att sjuksköterskor kan misslyckas med att hjälpa familjer med kolik på grund av att sjuksköterskor kan se annorlunda på kolikproblemet än föräldrarna själva eller att föräldrar kan ifrågasätta sjuksköterskors kompetens vad gäller kolikhantering. Ett annat hinder kan vara att föräldrarnas förmåga att acceptera stöd kan vara försämrad på grund av bland annat social isolering. Resultaten av denna studie tyder även på att kolikdiagnosen kan upplevas både som positiv och negativ av föräldrar och att när spädbarnskolik ibland normaliseras av vårdpersonal kan detta upplevas som negativt av föräldrar. En viktig poäng som framgick i studien, är att föräldrar till barn med kolik har olika behov och kan uppskatta olika typer av stöd och av andra vårdinsatser. Utifrån studiens resultat är det viktigt att sjuksköterskor och annan vårdpersonal alltid lyssnar på föräldrar, bemöter föräldraperspektivet och anpassar alla vårdinsatser utifrån föräldrars individuella behov.

▼ “Should I stay or should I go”, a song by The Clash (1982) sums up the dilemma some students face when they begin their journey in tertiary study. This research explores the experiences of a group of students from one cohort in their first semester of a Bachelor Degree programme for early childhood education. In particular it examines what enabled the students to be successful, what barriers they faced and what motivated them to keep going. This qualitative single case study utilised a range of data collecting tools. The methods used were a questionnaire for students; a student focus group and an academic staff focus group. Each data method was analysed, coded thematically and reported separately before being discussed in themes. The findings of this research reveal that the participants experienced some challenges that were predominately external to the institution. What kept them in the programme was the significant level of support received from their Academic Advisor; the academic staff, their peers, the cohort system and their families. The students’ motivation to stay was primarily intrinsic in nature. Their positive attitude towards their studies and pride in their progress enabled them to keep going. The main barriers identified by the students were related to personal circumstances and were often a combination of factors rather than one single factor. However, there were also a number of institutional barriers identified. These were the perceived differences between the satellite campus and the main campus regarding the levels of support; joining an existing cohort of students; and the differences between the student’s cultural capital and the cultural capital the institution trades in. Amongst the implications for this research is that support is critical to retention and success. Therefore it is recommended that this institute conducts a feasibility study to investigate the cost of providing this level of support against the cost of attrition and a centralised support system. Pastoral care plays an important role in retention and success. An indication from this research is that first year students need lecturers who are pastorally minded and are culturally responsive to their needs. Another recommendation is that professional development be provided for staff regarding supporting students with serious personal issues. This research has also shown that there is a need to address the issues students face when they cross-credit into the programme from another institution, specifically in relation to the induction process.

▼ This qualitative research enquiry sought to develop an understanding from forty-four women, comprising twenty-two couples in committed lesbian partnerships, of how they managed the long-term impacts of child sexual abuse, both on themselves and on their relationships. This is an area that is under- theorised in the literature. A number of key findings emerged from the analysis. The sexual abuse that women had experienced had impacted their adult lives in various ways. Of these the personal aspect featured most highly, with feelings of self-blame, shame and low self esteem commonly reported. Those women who reported physically invasive sexual abuse also reported a wider variety of effects, and in proportionately greater numbers, than women whose abusive experience had not encompassed that particular dimension. Just as the survivors were impacted in a variety of ways by their abuse, so too were their partners, although the effects upon the partner varied over time and in intensity depending on the length of the relationship and the degree of resolution experienced by the survivor. Despite challenges the over all view of couple relationships was positive, and couples were able to articulate coping strategies they felt would be useful to others in similar circumstances. Partners were able to identify with many of the relationship issues outlined by heterosexual male partners of female survivors, although lesbian partners had more a positive view of counselling. The emotional support and commitment of a caring partner was clearly valued although in these partnerships both women wanted their relationship to be based on more than the reparative needs of one member. Finally, being lesbian was no barrier to seeking counselling assistance. A large proportion of the participants had used counselling as a way of working through their experiences of child sexual abuse and had found this to be valuable. These findings have implications for social work practice with child and adult female survivors. They emphasise the long term impacts of sexual abuse, the important contributions made by partners and counsellors in supporting women sexually abused as children and the levels of inter-sibling sexual abuse perpetrated by brothers. The research findings also contain information from the women themselves on what facilitated their ability to cope with the effects of child sexual abuse from the varying perspectives of survivor, partner and couple. This will be essential information for counsellors and social workers wishing to employ strengths and evidence-based approaches in their work with this client group and others, particularly heterosexual women and heterosexual couples.

▼ In Sweden, support for abused women has historically been a task for female volunteers in women’s shelters. However, due to amendments in the Social Services Act, some local municipalities have in recent years initiated services for people with experience of violence in intimate relationships, often women and men, abused as well as abusers. These specialised public sector units have an approach to the question of violence that differs from “traditional” feminist ideas associated with the women’s shelter movement. The main purpose of this research was to examine local support practices in this particular “support field” and to further the knowledge about underlying tensions and the linkages to different understandings of violence against women. The research questions focused on (1) dominating understandings of the problem and how these were expressed and challenged within the support field, (2) local support practices in regard to legal and organisational conditions, (3) hierarchies, boundaries, sense of community and exclusions (4) overarching changes in the support field and consequences for support seekers and support providers. Inspired by an ethnographic approach, a range of qualitative methods were used: individual and group interviews, participatory observations and retrieval of policy documents. 24 interviews, with 32 people from five shelters and three specialised units, were completed. The participatory observations were performed in two sites. Finally, a web based survey was distributed to 320 recipients: women’s shelters, local crime victim support organisations and public sector specialised units. After removing incomplete surveys, 207 filled out surveys remained. The overall response rate was 65 %. A theoretical framework based on concepts such as field, doxa, capital and boundary work was used. The results of the study showed that the question of violence against women has been institutionalised in Swedish policies and that two dominating understandings were present: a gender power perspective and a relational perspective. The results pointed out that local women’s shelters worked in close partnership with the public sector and were doing “social services-tasks”. The shelter staff had a heavy administrative workload and spent little time on influencing public opinion. Hence, core ideals such as independence, anonymity for women and sisterhood were challenged. Among professionals in the specialised units counselling was favoured over practical tasks. The professionals framed counselling as professional, whereas women’s shelter work was often understood as practical and unskilled. The gender mixed approach of the specialised units was favoured over interventions for women only. Services for abused women in the support field were informed by two, sometimes conflicting, support ideals: (1) aimed at emancipating women, (2) ai med at changing women. Although there is now a slowly growing body of female-specific literature, fuelled by the increasing imprisonment rates among women, more remains to be learnt about the specific experiences and needs of female prisoners, especially from an Australian perspective. Recognising the need to address the paucity of Australian-based female-specific knowledge, this study explores the release concerns and service needs of female prisoners returning to the Perth metropolitan community. Drawing upon the narratives of eleven women who sought post-release support from Outcare's St John of God Women's Program, this research highlights two outstanding and interrelated themes. Firstly, following release there is a distinct need for women to develop a personal sense of stability within the community, including in particular, the establishment of safe, affordable and appropriate housing, financial security, the maintenance of sobriety, relational connection or reconnection, and immersion into prosocial pursuits. Secondly, in achieving such stability and, more importantly, maintaining it, there is a clear need for support for women, both in personal and non-personal terms. Ultimately, this research points to the critical role of comprehensive and female-focussed throughcare programs and services that can address critical short-term release needs, and provide opportunities for long-term self-sufficiency and sustainability. Furthermore, such services need to be encouraged as a crucial component of the criminal justice system, to ensure that women do not 'slip through the cracks'.

No âmbito do Mestrado em Educação Social e Intervenção Comunitária, a presente investigação visa apresentar os resultados da pesquisa e análise relativamente aos Centros de Apoio Familiar e Aconselhamento Parental (CAFAP) que tomou como referência empírica a produção académica realizada no ensino superior a nível nacional e disponibilizada no Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto em Portugal (RCAAP) entre 2008 e 2015. Este período abarcou a fase em que a problemática da promoção e proteção de crianças e jovens esteve em destaque a nível nacional e internacional. Não obstante, continua atualmente a revestir-se de grande complexidade, entre outros motivos, pelos múltiplos olhares sobre a intervenção com este grupo social e com as suas famílias. Os problemas familiares levam a que muitas vezes, seja necessária a intervenção de serviços especializados no sentido de assegurar os direitos das crianças e jovens. O enfoque da pesquisa desenvolvida assentou nos CAFAP. Do ponto de vista metodológico, trata-se de uma investigação de natureza qualitativa tendo por base a análise documental das oito produções académicas identificadas e analisadas que tinham como objeto e/ou como espaço de intervenção os CAFAP na sociedade portuguesa Os resultados do estudo apontam para uma escassez de investigações sobre os CAFAP e a ausência de trabalhos produzidos na área da Educação Social e Intervenção Comunitária.

ABSTRACT In the scope of the Master in Community Education and Intervention, this research aims to present the results of the research and analysis about the Centres for Family Support and Parental Counselling [CAFAP] that took as an empirical reference the academic production carried out in higher education at national level, between 2008 and 2015, which was available in the Scientific Repositories of Open Access in Portugal [RCAAP] in the period under review. At a time when discourses on the promotion and protection of children and young people are increasingly prominent nationally and internationally. Nevertheless, it continues to be complex, among other reasons, due to the multiple perspectives on the intervention with this social group and with the families. Family problems often lead to the intervention of specialized services in order to ensure the rights of children. The focus of the research developed was based on the Centers for Family Support and Parental Counselling [CAFAP]. From the methodological point of view, this is a qualitative research based on the content analysis of the eight academic productions identified and analysed that had as object and / or as intervention space the CAFAP in Portuguese society. The results of the study point to a lack of research on CAFAP and the lack of work produced in the area of Social Education and Community Intervention.

▼ This study emanates from the need to understand the socio-economic factors that might have contributed to the patients dropping out of the MASA antiretroviral therapy programme in Botswana. The aim of the study was to explore the socio-economic factors that are involved in compliance to antiretroviral therapy. It is crucial to know what these factors are and the strategies that can be deployed to address them. This will assist in the achievement of the programme goals. The type of research that was used is applied research. One of the primary rationales of applied research is that the study may have some practical use. The purpose of applied research is to contribute knowledge that will help people understand the nature of the problem in order to intervene, and this was the main motivation for this study. Since the MASA programme was launched, there were some patients who were ‘lost to follow-up’. As a result, there was a need to understand the reasons behind this phenomenon, so that the patients who are enrolled on the programme are retained. In order to gain an in-depth understanding of how the socio-economic factors affect compliance with antiretroviral therapy, phenomenology was used as a research strategy. Using the phenomenological strategy helps in understanding the nature or meaning of the respondents’ everyday experiences and to transform experiences into consciousness. The sampling method that was used is probability sampling, utilising availability sampling. The population for this study was HIV positive adults who had dropped out of the MASA Programme at Princess Marina Hospital, IDCC clinic in Botswana. The data collection instrument that was used was the interview schedule. From the conclusions, it is apparent that the socio-economic factors are crucial and should therefore be given more attention if better compliance is to be realised. In the same breath, patients require counselling that will focus, not only on the medical aspects of HIV/AIDS but also on the socio-economic factors. As shown in this study it is predominantly the socio-economic factors that led to patients dropping out of the programme. Social workers can play a critical role in this regard as they are equipped with counselling skills. Lastly, the conclusions and recommendation arising from this study are provided. I bakgrunden presenteras sjuksköterskans och distriktssköterskans ansvarsområde, att arbetet ska utgå från ett etiskt och holistiskt förhållningssätt och främja hälsa genom exempelvis rådgivning. Forskning beskrev att arbetet med telefonrådgivning upplevdes stimulerande samtidigt som det var svårt att vara både grindvakt och vårdare. Som en hjälp i det arbetet kunde beslutsstöd användas, det sågs som ett skyddsnät som kompletterade sjuksköterskans erfarenheter. Det sågs även som ett kvalitétshöjande instrument samt att rädslan för att ta fel beslut och anmälas minskade. Syftet med studien var att beskriva sjuksköterskors och distriktssköterskors erfarenheter av att arbeta med telefonrådgivning utifrån det webbaserade rådgivningsstödet på vårdcentral. För att få fram beskrivningarna användes halvstrukturerade intervjuer som analyserades genom kvalitativ innehållsanalys med induktiv ansats. I resultatet beskrevs det att stödet skapade trygghet då det var en källa till kunskap, ett stöd vid behov, ett bra hjälpmedel och gav bekräftelse. Stödet sågs som otillräckligt och svårarbetat då det var svårnavigerat, tidskrävande, språket satte gränser, det kunde inte ersätta den kliniska blicken och stämde inte med verkligheten. Slutligen beskrevs det att den egna erfarenheten styr hur stödet används. Erfarenheterna var övervägande positiva, men omvårdnadsfokus minskade då dyrbar tid användes till att hantera rådgivningsstödet.

In the background we present the responsibilities of nurses and district nurses, namely that the duties will begin with an ethical and holistic point of view, and to promote health through for example giving advice. Research described that working with telephone counselling was perceived as stimulating, though hard being both a gatekeeper and a caretaker. One kind of help in that task could be decision support, it was seen as a safety net and a complement to the experience of the nurse. It was also seen as an instrument to improve quality, as well as reducing the fear of making the wrong decisions and being reported. The purpose of the study was to describe the experience of nurses and district nurses to work with telephone counselling using the web-based counselling support in health centres. To get the descriptions half structured interviews were used, which were analyzed by qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. It was described in the result that the support created a sense of assurance, because it was a source of knowledge, a support when needed, a good aid, and gave confirmation. The support was also seen as insufficient and not user-friendly, since it was hard to navigate, time consuming, had a language barrier, it could not replace the clinical “eye”, and did not correspond with reality. Lastly it was said that the experience of each individual was a key in how the support was used. Most had positive experiences, but focus from taking care of patients was lost due to valuable time being used for handling the counselling support.

▼ In this study an instrument is suggested for implementation by the Educational Psychologist to design a support programme, aimed at handling family members' stress where a child has sustained a brain injury. Attention was paid to the phenomenon "brain injured child" to ascertain demands and needs (physical, cognitive, psychological and emotional). Specific note was taken of the toll on each family member in their observance, experience, assistance and giving· meaning to the child. Reference was made to existing support programmes for such family members from the acute care phase to the final acceptance and readjustment of the family. With this study the need for a continuous support programme and the contents of such a programme was addressed. Using these guidelines the Educational Psychologist will be able to prepare the family for the stress possibilities in dealing with the brain injured child.; Met hierdie studie is 'n instrument daargestel vir die ontwerp van 'n hulpverleningsprogram vir gebruik deur die Opvoedkundige Sielkundige. Hierdie hulpprogram het as doel, die hantering van stres, deur die gesin van 'n kind, wat 'n breinbesering opgedoen het. In die studie is aandag gegee aan die tipiese gedrag wat oor die algemeen van 'n breinbeseerde kind verwag kan word. ▼ Counselling services as provided by non-professional counsellors have been in place for a number of decades. Counselling traumatised people demands a significant amount of emotional investment from the counsellor. A neglected area as far as non-professional counsellors in South Africa is concerned, is the well-being of the counsellors. Burnout as well as its antithesis, work engagement, are two possible transactional outcomes impacting on the well-being of these counsellors. The measurement of burnout and work engagement requires valid and reliable measuring instruments. The dearth of research studies in the area of burnout and work engagement, together with the unique contribution of non-professional counsellors in organisational settings, has led to the primary focus of this study being the exploration of the experience of this group of counsellors doing trauma counselling in financial institutions in South Africa. A lack of norms for the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) for non-professional counsellors doing trauma counselling makes the identification of burnout and work engagement within this specialist environment difficult. Consequently, investigating the reliability and validity of the MBI-HSS and the UWES would result in the standardisation of these specific measuring instruments, therefore contributing to the identification of burnout and work engagement with non-professional trauma counsellors. Some of the factors that could play a role in the prevalence of burnout and work engagement are secondary traumatic stress, the demands of counselling, lack of resources, personal consequences, social support and sense of coherence. The objectives of this research were to standardise the MBI-HSS and UWES for non-professional counsellors as well as to develop and test a causal model of burnout and work engagement for this specialist group. The research method involved four separate articles, each consisting of a brief literature overview and an empirical study. A cross-sectional design, whereby a sample is drawn from a population at a particular point in time, was used. The data for this study was collected from 168 non-professional counsellors, employed by three of the major banks in South Africa. The MBI-HSS, UWES, Orientation to Life Questionnaire (OLQ) as well as a Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ) and a biographical questionnaire were administered. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, correlations, canonical analysis, and structural equation modelling were used. Structural equation modelling confirmed a three-factor model of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment). ▼ Recent research from New Zealand suggests that one in every 120 people in New Zealand are facing homelessness or severe housing deprivation. We also know that many people who are homeless are never counted, living in caravan parks, in overcrowded houses or boarding houses, and are what is often referred to in literature as the ‘hidden homeless’. With an increasing lack of supply of safe, affordable and secure housing in regions such as Auckland and Christchurch, the issue of homelessness is intensifying. This research will look at effective ways of providing housing support services for people who have been homeless, often due to traumatic or complex issues including abuse, relationship breakdowns, addictions, bad debt, mental health, crime, poverty and unemployment. Models of supportive housing are discussed, with a special emphasis on the Housing First model of supportive housing and reviewing the VisionWest Community Trust’s version of the Housing First model. Key themes regarding reasons for homelessness are discussed as are some of the structural and policy issues that underpin homelessness and the interplay of both the systemic and individual issues that face people who are homeless. The research was based on the lived experience of the participants (almost all solo mothers) in 10 houses in VisionWest’s social housing project. All of the participants and their families had been homeless, half without shelter, and the other half living in overcrowded or uninhabitable accommodation, with many having very traumatic and complex histories (abuse, trauma, addiction and imprisonment). The process enabled the participants to share their perspective on some of the issues that have led to homelessness and the change resulting from being part of VisionWest’s supportive housing programme. The research found that providing supportive housing such as VisionWest’s Housing First model is a very successful approach in supporting people out of homelessness, including those with traumatic and complex histories, enabling them to look to their future and the future of their children with a sense of hope based on real social, psychological and economic progress. Based on international literature and information available in New Zealand, it was found that this model costs a fraction of the price associated with other interventions such as emergency housing, prison or health and welfare interventions. It is therefore crucial that government officials, policy makers, funders and community housing providers join together to find innovative solutions for the funding of supportive housing services throughout New Zealand.
