▼ This research investigates how
functionality,
rationality, and
emotionality applied to
urban furniture design contribute to the organization, legibility, and qualification of
public spaces, according to different layouts, physical and visual qualities of the
urban furniture as well as the quality of
urban infrastructure that may influence the uses and appropriation of
urban spaces by pedestrians, turning those
spaces into socially centripetal or centrifugal places. The work consists of two parts. First refers to a bibliographical review concerning two main issues of the investigation: product design and legibility of
public space, defining the conceptual and theoretical bases, linked to methodological strategies aimed at systemic planning and integrated management of
urban furniture design and legibility of
public spaces (sidewalks), that are necessary to define the existing relationships among the user s interface (pedestrians); product (
urban artifacts); built environment (sidewalks). The second part refers to the achievement of empirical approach throughout visual analysis of
public spaces and the functional and qualitative evaluation of the existing
urban furniture in the central neighborhood of Cidade Alta, Natal, RN, according to the theoretical researched concepts and methodological procedures. The results expose the weaknesses and levels of intensity arising from the relations among
public space,
urban furniture, and users, revealing the need for theoretical and practical approaches which would help the decision-making in planning, designing and integrating innovative, sustainable, and ethical solutions in order to design attractive
public spaces that could provide sociability and citizenship throughout integrated
public management, city systemic thinking and
urban identity. The suggested guidelines at the end of this research will provide the necessary strategies to design suitable
urban furniture systems according to aesthetic and practical
urban infrastructure and city context, aiming to ease visual and physical conflicts that may negatively interfere with the appropriation of
public spaces by the citizens

▼ There exists a lack of
public funding or political authority within the 21st century North American city for the creation of
public space. In the absence of this authority, architecture can resist being merely a commodity for global profit and become an agent for the creation of
public space through built form. While this is a topical idea in architectural discourse, through synthesized research intocontemporary urbanisms and by way of several architectural projects that explore
public space, this thesis proposes an alternative methology to the conventions of framing
public space through the horizontal deformation of a building. This thesis places
public space as the hierarchal organizing figure for
urban architecture and proposes a new connective
public domain that might operate more like the Nolli Map in section rather than in plan.

▼ Quality of life in a city is a culmination of personal
experiences. These experiences are not only based on our
psychological state of mind but also the quality of experience the
space tends to create. As we move through the city, we respond to
its elements and it certainly affect our psychological being. It is
interesting how an informed decision is made to create a thoughtful
combination of elements (composition) and how they play a
significant role in making people feel happy, comfortable or safe;
and how such forms can affect the people and the city as a whole.
It is thought-provoking how Allan Jacobs in his book, “Great
Streets” raises a point about – Why would you prefer driving from a
certain street even if it takes a longer route? – “for a better
experience” because these experiences make you feel happy, sad,
fearful, angry, or disgust (predominant emotions of an
individual).
Public Spaces are dynamic in nature and each of them
function in their own way. This research inclines towards
understanding the factors responsible in creating these
spaces and
the relationship with the surrounding context. The most important
factor here are the people and then the setting which creates
enough animation for people to respond. Other major factors that
functions a
public space in a specific manner are the history of
the place, socio-cultural values and political influences. These
factors including the design of the space influence the behavioral
pattern of people in these
spaces. The research intends to create a
universal method to evaluate
urban public spaces irrespective of
their geographical locations. Scholars like Carr, Carmona, Van
Melik, Kohn, Mehta and many others have conducted some remarkable
research on this
subject. Although, these studies cover broader
factors to evaluate
spaces and, therefore, need to be detailed to
specific categories. By the end of this research, a method/ process
is achieved which works in multiple stages once a
public space is
identified to be evaluated and will be tested in
Cincinnati.

▼ This thesis examines the contribution of urban greenspace to public health and inequalities in young people. Taking a comprehensive, environmental justice approach variations in provision, access, use and experience of greenspace related to neighbourhood level inequalities are explored in relation to physical activity, mood and wellbeing in 16-25 year olds. The project used a three phased, mixed methods design via spatial mapping, real-time monitoring and community-based participatory research. The first phase used Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to conduct an analysis of the provision, accessibility and quality of public greenspace in Aberdeen City. Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation data were used explore and contrast these characteristics between areas categorised as affluent or deprived. The second phase used real-time measures to gather within-person data on greenspace use, physical activity, and mood in 16-25year olds over a seven day period, further exploring how socio-economic variations in good quality greenspace influenced the use and effect of greenspace. The third study phase used qualitative, community-based participatory research to empower young people to explore their experience and importance of greenspace for health. The results suggest a potential positive role of greenspace in public health in relation to increasing physical activity, decreasing sedentary behaviour and providing opportunities for restoration in young people. However, they also demonstrate that social inequalities are present in the provision of good quality greenspace and highlight that quality of greenspace and wider issues related to area level deprivation play a crucial role in the use and experience of greenspace, as well as the effect on physical activity and mood in young people. This has important implications for public health as the promotion of greenspace at a population level could deepen rather than improve health inequalities, by exposing those in affluent areas to health enhancing good quality greenspace and those in deprived areas to the potentially detrimental effects of poor quality greenspace.

▼ When undertaking the renovation of large-scale road
infrastructure, there is a unique design opportunity to reconsider
the role of road networks and their effect on our contemporary
urban landscape. This study analyses Montreal’s trenched Décarie
Expressway to explore the potential space created by road
infrastructure and its role as a key element in
urban renewal. The
urban design takes shape according to the specific characteristics
of the neighborhoods adjacent to the Décarie axis. Remediation of
these neighborhoods occurs here by introducing
public spaces and
inserting real-estate development over the expressway. The design
concentrates on connecting pedestrian paths along a new
public
plinth. Since we have inherited the road infrastructure developed
by modern car culture, we must begin to envision transportation
infrastructure as an opportunity for
public spaces with real
three-dimensional connectivity that would marry civic needs with
cultural amenities and ultimately symbolize the physical
rehabilitation of the Décarie axis.

The present work focuses in the importance of the Public Open Space System (or SELP Sistema de Espaços Livres Públicos) on structuring the urban environment and its potential on valuating the public sense. Based on a consolidated area, the analysis objective is to characterize the main attributions of the system in order to develop urban public politics, and contribute to the local planning. Therefore, it emphasizes the importance of environmental issues combined to urban politics that valuate the open spaces. The Public Open Space System structuring is an important element for the analysis of the urban development of São Paulo city, besides its legislation, to verify how the Strategic Urban Plan approved in 2002 deals with these issues. The study case is Vila Maria/ Vila Guilherme administrative unit, located at the northeast portion of São Paulo - its process analysis intends to create a method to be applied in order portions of the territory, emphasizing conflicts and potentials suggested by the SELP analysis, and comprehending how the urban plan and public management interact in recent time.

(Hillier 1996:151) This dissertation investigates the theoretical
and practical importance of creating social

distinguishes between
public spaces (

encounters between strangers), social space is identified as an
integrating space that accommodates, adapts and relates to
surrounding
spaces. This contrasts
public space whose only criteria
is often that it is an open space. A theoretical argument explores
the concept of ‘publicness’ in space and identifies practical
design principles that reflect this concept. The physical locality
of the project is then analysed where problems within the fabric of
the city are identified. A series of local
urban interventions,
constituting a regional intervention for the Johannesburg CBD, are
presented as a solution to these problems and a single intervention
is then focused on. The design process documents the transmitting
of knowledge into object form; design decisions are made
intentionally and the final product is evaluated according to a set
of interrogated design criteria.

This project intends to reflect on the importance public spaces had on their appearance in the mid-XIX century, not only through the development of urban areas but also by the relevance and merit gained on the today's society birth.
Throughout a historical contextualization, the author reflects on nowadays' usage of these green oasis in crowded cities, on which the hectic life of its inhabitants contradicts the degradation and depopulation of urban spaces such as São Lázaro Garden in Porto.
Which might be the future of urban gardens for generations to come? Sensing the need of bringing to the discussion the increasing neglect and isolation on these spaces, such as São Lázaro Garden, strategies must be designed in order to catalyze and renew them.
Design discipline appears as an ally of spaces development, enhancing interaction and user’s emotions. Therefore, the project’s theme focuses on the possible influence that urban furniture and equipment might have on public spaces transformation and imagistic perception by the user.
Combining the historical context, and directed research, the author took a step into an evolutive idea and concept generation process. This led to an urban furniture proposal, composed of many pieces of…

▼ The role of product design in activating
public spaces is a relatively under researched area within the discipline of
public space design. As a result, the potential for better addressing
public user-needs through innovation using human-centered design has been largely unexplored. The primary objective of the
Public-Object Nexus project was to investigate how the design of
public urban furniture can be enhanced, to more effectively support an active and dynamic
public lifestyle. The project sought to reposition the emphasis of
public urban design from a macro to a micro level focus, so that user needs and desires might be more effectively addressed. The project was underpinned by passive observations of
urban public spaces, which were analyzed in the context of a number of design theories, resulting in the development of an open-affordances conceptual design framework. Evaluation and refinement of this conceptual framework was achieved through the design and development of three
urban furniture proposals, personal reflection, and the subsequent use of potential users and experts for detailed evaluation. A review and analysis of literature indicate that the needs and desires of
public space users are often overshadowed by the implementation of a macro-level design approach, complicated by the divergent agendas of various stakeholders. The large-scale logistical and political complications involved with developing
public spaces often appear to overshadow human-centered considerations. This approach to the design of
urban furniture commonly emphasizes community legacy and aesthetics over
functionality and user-centeredness. This insight is reinforced by the passive observation and analysis of user-object interactions in selected
urban public spaces, revealing that a user’s engagement often depends on the furniture’s capacity to support a specific activity, such as eating, socializing, reading, and people watching. When
furniture pieces do not serve sufficiently in this capacity, users are observed reinterpreting and/or adapting the furniture’s originally intended function. In response to key insights, an open-affordances conceptual design framework developed for the project, centers around three key facets of new human-factors, aiding activity, and flexibility. The open-affordances framework underpins a new approach to
urban furniture design in which the consideration of dynamic user-needs, represented through these facets, is placed at the center of the design development process. The three
urban furniture design proposals developed in the research, The Sugarhouse Lounge, The Hub and The Buttress, have all explored the open-affordances framework from a variety of perspectives, and have identified a variety of issues and opportunities in
public design. Although preliminary in nature, these design proposals demonstrate how
public urban furniture can benefit from a framework of front-end human-centered research. This is evidenced by the favorable response to the design proposals by potential users and a variety of…

This work discusses the permanence of central public spaces in between the successive urban transformations and their role in the construction of the city. As off the Praça do Patriarca, an important square for the territorial occupation of São Paulo, we will show the impositions and possibilities defi ned during historic process in the constructed space and the various urban concepts responsible for its confi guration. The relation of the square and its environment was researched concerning their spatial confi guration, the formal design of their buildings and the possibilities of use and appropriation permitted during each of the observed periods. Added to this survey were historic references about the city construction and their distinct purposes, with the idea to show the relationship between a current social-politic situation and the resulting spatial construction.

▼ There might be without doubt the older inner
metropolitan areas in China observed a substantial increase the
quantity of development activities previously two decades. Both
public and private sectors were positively urged within this
behavior by property booms through urban regrowth. Among the
interesting issues is when and why an area could be selected like a
candidate site for redevelopment. Normally, it is dependent on some
social, political and economic choice where it will likely be hard
to obtain general agreement. From the purpose of supply-side
approach, rent gap theory gives us important experience into this
problem. If, for instance, we assume, an area consists of an
enormous rent gap, it will likely be more prone to be restored due
to an additional land rent which may be appropriated by the flow of
national even world-wide banking capital to development. This
indicates that the growing rent gap can instruct local property
designers and rentiers essentially using the chance to invest. Two
kinds of sites therefore become popular for redevelopment, there
are abandoned industrial land and land from urban villages. The
large rent gap embodied in abandoned industrial land is partially
produced from capital depreciation and urbanization that has been
clarified by Neil Cruz, and it is partially produced from
institutional alterations in a privileges regime, which remains
unclear within the Chinese context. The 1990s was an
extraordinarily prosperous period in China when industrial sites
redevelopment took a major form. However, Firms looking for cheap
industrial sites have noticed possibilities closed off as
industrial sites gradually disappeared in the late period.
Therefore, Property designers diverted their targets in urban
villages where rent gap also elevated. Generally, urban village
redevelopment involves complete deconstruction of the existing
low-rise dwelling housing and new construction of new qualities
throughout the refurbished land. The primary driving pressure
behind the projects, including the partnership in Chinese
metropolitan areas is usually local government. These projects
realistically reflect a simple principle of urban renewal
guidelines that whose primary purpose is to achieve urban regrowth
through getting and enabling investment of property development. In
my thesis, I research current reconstruction mode of urban village
in Guangzhou first, and then find a problem that during the
reconstruction process, nobody cares about the migrants, the most
vulnerable group living in the urban villages. Based on the

could find ways for urban village to survive.
I choose a typical
urban village, Longdong village, in Guangzhou as research object.
Longdong Village is the largest urban village in Guangzhou, China.
It is situated in the middle of Tianhe District in Guangzhou, with
dense multi-story dwelling houses building in and lands for
collective use. The village is supported by 170 narrow alleys yet
surrounded by tall buildings and…

▼ The research described within this thesis provides an update to and an extension of our understanding of the role of mobile phone technology in those communal public spaces that allow and encourage social interaction amongst its participants. This work explores the current uses of mobile phone technology in outdoor markets, offers insight into the uses of mobile phones by market participants, and creates a framework to aid future researchers. All of which was validated through the design, development, and evaluation of a mobile prototype for outdoor markets.
Mobile phones are now a ubiquitous technology across the world: There are literally billions of mobile phones of many different types, our mobiles are constantly within our reach and where we go they go, and they have woven themselves into our social fabric becoming an integral part of our day-to-day lives. Unfortunately our understanding around their use in public spaces has not kept up with the new ubiquity that mobiles now occupy.
Past research into public space has included work from the “Third Place”, urban design, and information grounds but despite offering insight into how people exist and operate in these spaces they fail to account for the impact of computing and mobile technology. This is ignored or relegated to footnotes and future work. The human-computer-interaction fields of ubiquitous computing, awareness, computer-supported-cooperative-work, and urban informatics on the other hand provide information into which tools can be used in public space and how best to develop them. These fields, however lack any insight into how people work in these spaces other than as the entity which will be using the newly introduced artefacts.
Using a methodological approach from urban informatics, mobile technology in communal public spaces is explored through two phases. A variety of different data collection tools were used and analysed using a grounded approach. Based upon the gaps identified in previous research, this thesis creates an understanding of communal public spaces and the role mobile technology has within them through the example of outdoor markets. This understanding is used as a basis to develop and evaluate mobile application prototypes as well as to create a new conceptual representation of communal public spaces to account for the new insight gained.
This thesis used multiple tools to collect data including surveys, individual and group semi-structured interviews, and prototype evaluation. The prototype evaluation was based on the exploratory findings of the work and informed the theoretical contribution of the research as a framework to guide future public space research. The data was analysed using a grounded approach common to the human-computer-interaction fields and used a novel technique during the analysis of the data: live audio coding.
The findings of the work provide a better understanding of the part mobile technology occupies in outdoor markets in particular and communal public spaces in general. The major contributions of the…

▼ Among the hierarchy of motivations, Maslow identifies the social as one of the levels that generates drive in individuals (Maslow, 1970). The
urban environment is a place that has great opportunity for social interaction with design and planning of
public spaces.
Public spaces serve an important function in society and the design of these
spaces can attract or repel a population. As specific elements are incorporated in
public space and especially
public hardscape design, designers should not neglect the issue of sustainability. According to the Brundtland Commission, sustainability includes the 'policies and strategies that meet society's present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs' (World Commission of Environment and Development, 1987). Implementation of
public spaces can provide for the current and future population's need for social interaction. In planning and designing these
spaces the protection of natural resources must be considered for posterity. The
urban built environment has had enormous impacts on the natural world. Multiple cities across the United States operate with a combined sewer and wastewater system. Use of this type of combined system creates the risk of overflow of polluted stormwater and untreated sewage into local rivers and streams during heavier rains (Paul & Meyer, 2001). Pollution alone due to runoff can be detrimental to the ecosystems that depend on local water bodies, but the additional risk of combined sewer systems and the dangers that can result in larger storms presents the question of what steps can be done to reconcile the
urban environment with the preexisting natural world? Designers must consider factors such as stormwater runoff when creating buildings, streets and
public spaces. Through water quality policies, enacted by the EPA, regulations have been written and implemented to reduce the pollution that is discharged into local water bodies. Stormwater management practices have been developed to not only reduce runoff, but treat the water as well. However, there is more than can be done with
public spaces and their design to recreate natural hydrological conditions while creating an attractive and vibrant place. The impacts of impervious surfaces and stormwater have eye-opening consequences. According to the King County, Washington stormwater services, stormwater impacts include contamination of local water bodies, killing fish and harming wildlife, flooding, and potential groundwater shortages due to impervious surface (King County, 2010). Technology has improved and impervious surface materials have become porous pavements. This literature review will attempt to identify the state of the art in respect to
public hardscape design, building materials and stormwater management practices. It is the goal of this research to discover how a new, more sustainable
public hardscape can become the standard for design through the integration of stormwater management practices, effective use of permeable materials and thoughtful…

▼ Mestrado em Arquitetura Paisagista - Instituto Superior de Agronomia
Urban centres and cities are par excellence representations of complexity of human landscapes and environments. In the context of a rapid urban growth and a technologic centred world, these places are the stage for dynamic changes, and reveal a heterogenic spatial, human and ecologic composition in both hemispheres of the World.
Having this complex space in mind, the present dissertation intended to frame the field of action of landscape architecture in a specific type of urban settlement - the suburban one, in a way of establishing good quality public spaces while combining social/cultural and ecological concerns. The case study was the “satellite” city of Agualva-Cacém, located between Lisbon and Sintra - an important Portuguese city for its cultural landmarks and ecological context.
In this sense, an analysis of the concept of “quality” in the outdoor space was made, as well as a reflection upon good design practices for public parks and urban streets. Secondly, design strategies in the case of Agualva-Cacém were proposed, considering environmental and social concerns: in one hand, to contribute to a more sustainable management of water, soil and to contribute to the green infrastructure of Agualva-Cacém; in another hand, to change the image of the city and improve the quality of life within a contemporary urban environment characterized by spatial fragmentation, dependency on the use of the automobile and daily pendular movements of people. This was achieved through the proposal of requalification of urban spaces confined in a delimitated strategic axis, composed by an avenue and two different public parks.
The three public spaces of this axis are then interconnected, forming a continuous system of water circulation, green continuity, soft mobility and public spaces

The aim of the design of the dissertation is to create a transient and exclusive public organization in Ballito. Which is rapidly developing coastal town on the north of Kwa-Zulu Natal North Coast. The development of the framework through the ‘old heart’ of the town is intended to reinstate an identity to a particular place. The infrastructure ruptures the exclusive wall of privatized developments that shape an impenetrable barrier to the other regions greatest assert- the ocean. The space will serve all members of the community as well as seasonal or sporadic visitors and is activated by the imminent identification of its surroundings –and event. The infrastructure will also act as the machine of town – servicing and supplying resources through a sustainable systemic cycle. Unexpected environmental threats are managed in a manner that respects the sensitive coastline. A thorough situation analysis of the region is conducted together with the municipalities IDP. A regional and urban framework is conceptualized to understand the site as an important future node whilst addressing insensitive and myopic development trends of sprawl, exclusivity and segregation.

▼ This thesis explores questions of politics and
public space through an examination of the experiences of people involved in Occupy protest camps and local officials who were tasked with managing the protests in Eugene, OR and Madison, WI. Using assemblage as an organizing theoretical framework, this work identifies the actors involved in the production of Occupy protest camps and traces the trajectories of two Occupy protests from their beginnings to eviction day. It highlights the role of space in the protests, the ways in which protesters negotiated with local authorities for long-term use of
public spaces previously prohibited by law, and some of the factors that contributed to the eviction of the protest camps. Finally, it seeks to reframe the debate on
public space and conceptualizes
public space as an assemblage that is continually made, unmade, and remade through the interactions of diverse, heterogeneous actors.

▼ This thesis examines the Beijing south moat park with a comparative case study of the Madrid Rio park. It contains three aspects that the BSM park is anticipated to achieve—a key to reviving city history, urban expressway landscape, and modern public space. In each aspect, the comparative case study of the Madrid Rio park, which is widely regarded as a successful public space transformation, will serve as the comparative study to illustrate the weaknesses of the current situation of the BSM park. Along with the analysis of two other case studies, Montgomery, Alabama and Cheonggyecheon, Seoul, this thesis seeks to provide comprehensive recommendations in different aspects of the BSM park by extracting and purifying the strength and weakness of the comparative case studies. The overall key findings include recommendations that fit in four categories: cultural heritage, reconnecting segmented spaces, non-vehicular traffic, and placemaking.

▼ Space, often absent from kinesiological analyses, has
significant impacts on how communities operationalize health
(Fusco, 2007). The spatial dialogue between bodies and intentional
movement directs how bodies are invited, or disinvited, to be
physically active (Loukaitou-Sideris & Ehrenfeucht, 2011). As
communities re-imagine
public spaces in the name of neoliberal
health (Ayo, 2012; Fusco, 2007), the challenge becomes
distinguishing which forms of physical activity and movement are or
are not accepted in those
spaces. Thus, as bodies claim space, some
bodies are ignored, regulated, or removed, while others are
celebrated and designed for (Soja, 1980). Skateboarding offers a
unique look at how bodies are navigating the challenging landscape
of the postmodern. Particularly, skateboarding claims
public space,
whether or not that space was intended for its use, placing
skateboarding in conversation with the municipality and community
in multiple ways. Utilizing the integration of social science
frameworks (Lefebvrian Triad, edgework, publicness, and
biographies) that focus on spatial relations, this project examined
the regulation of human movement by municipalities through the
critical reading of Seattle’s Citywide Skatepark Plan (Skatepark
Advisory Taskforce, 2007) and Portland’s Skatepark System Plan
(Portland Parks & Recreation, 2008). Identifying seven key
themes, a description of how cities develop, deploy, and consume
skateboarding and related sports (e.g., BMX, inline) and the
spaces
they occupy is presented. The analyses introduce five major
assertions that describe how municipalities manage physical
movement through “the city” in the name of the common good. These
assertions serve to shape how communities define legal bodies and
movement through cityscapes and what this means for the
skateboarder and skateboarding. Specifically, the introduction of a
Skating Commons and ideas of complacent resistance are explored as
challenges facing the municipality and skateboarding in the
creation of sociospatial networks within “the city.” The
application of these assertions in the “lived” experiences of “the
city” has the potential to impact how individuals understand,
value, and engage in physical activity and movement.; Lefebvrian

▼ There is a large body of literature in the planning field on the topic of collaborative processes of decision-making, particularly in the United States and Europe. However, there appears to be less debate on the
subject of complementing these ideas with contributions from
urban governance. This research aims to contribute to that complementary work. In order to accomplish that, this thesis presents first a theoretical analysis of collaborative
rationality and
urban governance contributions. This analysis focuses on the articulation of those aspects that can offer a more holistic framework for addressing
urban issues in a more inclusive way. Second, it provides a case study that takes place in the City of Rafaela, Argentina. The case study consists of an assessment of the regulatory and institutional framework that affects planning and the exploration of two contentious recent processes. One of them is the ‘Downtown Revitalization’ project and the second one is the ‘Future use of the Old Bus Terminal’. Several interviews with key actors were conducted in order to gather the information, which was combined with
public and media documentation available. These two processes help to understand how significant decisions regarding uses and renovation of
urban space are made and the opportunities to implement more collaborative processes in planning. The results show that the combination of the aspects highlighted by both bodies of theory can help to better address conflicts that arise regarding
urban space, while increasing citizen participation and addressing issues of inequality in the process of decision-making.

▼ Nowadays, the impact of technological growth on people’s life and our society is remarkable, inevitable and also worrying. The excessive influence of technology in individuals’ lives has caused our community to change towards more privatisation and secluded life. At this point, the role of urban public spaces in social life has become more prominent and significant. Issues of social life in public spaces and the relations with creating a vibrant and dynamic city has not been given too much attention in urban planning and design. This thesis raises the question of considering public spaces and how urban public spaces (especially squares) can encourage/persuade citizens to increase social interaction. Initially, it describes a clear definition of public spaces and urban squares. Thereafter, the study addresses effectual factors from the human perspective which can help to achieve the successful design of an urban public square. The aim of the work is to comprehend how it might be possible to improve social life and behaviour in public spaces (squares) and consequently to attain a framework in order to design. Ultimately, a design is proposed for Fisktorget (Fish Square), which is one of most important public places in the Karlskrona city in Sweden. The proposed design is based on studies and analyses that have been done throughout this thesis.

▼ While Stockholm has made significant investments in formal public art throughout the inner city and suburbs, the city has a lack of informal public art. Defined as a feature or work produced by a person who considers themselves to be an artist or craftsperson, located in a place accessible to and used by the public, public art can be either formal or informal. Informal public art generally has no formal process, with flexibility on the temporal nature of the work, materials and subject. This allows the artwork to inhabit spaces which are overlooked or underinvested in by formal public art commissioning bodies, and not have to follow formal public art requirements which are part of the broken “public art machine”. (Phillips, 1988). Much of Stockholm’s urban environment is considered beautiful, has heritage value and/ or is protected. But Stockholm also hosts many spaces in between – spaces that hold the city together, including infrastructure, bridges, alleys, and the places under and between them. These spaces can be labelled as a city’s residual spaces (Villagomez, 2010), and are where informal public art can be utilised to make these spaces into places. This study outlines the importance of and background to public art in the context of Stockholm. A survey of Stockholm’s residents, visitors and potential future visitors established how they feel about public art in the city, as well as in residual urban spaces, and to what extent it assists with establishing a place connection. This was accompanied by onsite interventions and observational analysis which challenged the way residual urban spaces are being used in Stockholm, and developed a case for how informal public art can be incorporated in the city’s residual urban spaces.

▼ The great impact urbanized cities have on its people has been studied since the 1960s. This has created new methods to measure this impact. However, because of lack of knowledge on how to use these methods they are rarely used in the planning process of new spaces in practice. By concluding what each method provides to our understanding of public spaces, and how they can be further developed, we can create a more holistic and efficient planning-process regarding public spaces, while aiming for the important goal “To create cities fit for people”. In this study the focus will be on two existing methods: Space syntax and Jan Gehl’s method of observation. The motivation for these particular methods is their differences in their approach. The purpose of this study is “to get a deeper understanding of already existing urban planning methods in order to improve them for their purposes”. The purpose has been divided into three questions that will be answered: What are the differences between Space syntax and Jan Gehl’s method of observation? What can they provide in the study of public spaces’ effect on public life? If, then how can they contribute to each other in order to improve the methods separately for their purposes in the study of public spaces? To answer these questions, the objective will be to measure the impact of two public spaces on their public life by using the two methods. The results will be interpreted, compared and discussed for potential further development. Regarding what is the difference between the methods, it can be described as space syntax using the perspective of space and Jan Gehl the perspective of life. This leads to space syntax being concerned about how much the space encourages usage of it while Jan Gehl’s method of observation is focusing on the behaviour of the people using the space, for example who they are and what they do. Different representations for the methods become a result of this. When discussing what each method can provide to the study of public spaces, space syntax usefulness for comparing spaces to each other and making prognosis makes it adapted to choose an appropriate location for a new project. Jan Gehl method with its high amount of details can show the success of a space in practice. Regarding what the methods can provide to each other in order to improve them: Space syntax is not entirely accurate to the observed flow of people, mostly derived from lack of input about important destinations. Therefore, one suggestion for improvement is to introduce important destinations as a variable. The efficiency of space syntax can be integrated to the quality measurements of Jan Gehl’s method. By using computer programs to measure people’s behaviours, the time spending to observe and catalogue can decrease. However, surveillance has in history been used without people’s knowledge by the government and therefore it is very important for ethical reasons to get the general public’s approval…

▼ The connections leading to underground transit lines have not received the attention given to public spaces above ground. Considered to be merely infrastructure, the design and planning of these underground passageways has been dominated by engineering and capital investment principles, with little attention to place-making. This underground transportation area, often dismissed as “non-space,” is a by-product of high-density transit-oriented development, and becomes increasingly valuable and complex as cities become larger and denser. This dissertation explores the design of five of these hidden cities where there has been a serious effort to make them into desirable public spaces. Over thirty-two million urbanites navigate these underground labyrinths in New York City, Hong Kong, London, Moscow, and Paris every day. These in-between spaces have evolved from simple stairwells to networked corridors, to transit concourses, to transit malls, and to the financial engines for affordable public transit.
The Oculus in New York City makes connections to the World Financial Center, the new buildings on the rebuilt World Trade Center site, and a new transit hub. The Jubilee Station in London brings people to the heart of the London Docklands, fast becoming a major new urban center. The Central Station in Hong Kong unites multiple levels of intense development which has also helped finance the transit. The Okhotny Ryad in Moscow, built in palatial style as a deliberate statement of the rights of the proletariat, has now been modernized by the addition of retail. The Les Halles station in Paris has made underground space a destination. This dissertation traces the historical development of each of these underground systems and documents them in detailed drawings so that their spatial structures can be compared. The way people use these places has been documented with photographs and maps using participant observation methodology.
By analyzing these cases, we can identify a generalizable theory for reinventing underused subterranean public spaces as effective places, realizing the potential for rich public life, so often obscured by the heavy foot traffic in transit hubs. Underground public spaces need not be gloomy and unsafe, and the vitality of public space is determined not only by its location, but by the design of its physical setting. These five hidden cities are success stories showing how designers and users have converted non-spaces into places through design and active civic engagement.

▼ An exploratory research investigation into the creation of ‘privately owned publicly accessible spaces’ (POPS) in Toronto, Ontario and a critical review of the process used to secure these spaces and the subsequent agreements made. This paper seeks to answer if land use planners are able to better mediate the use of POPS as a means of providing open space to communities in high-density areas. This report includes the timeline illustrating the development of Toronto’s POPS program followed by a discussion on Toronto’s increase growth and development and the suitability of POPS as a contributing strategy for diminishing new park and open space assets and a high level breakdown of the legal mechanisms currently in place to help facilitate new POP spaces. Interviews with individuals from both the public and private sectors were conducted, which produced a generalized model outlining how POPS in Toronto are secured.
