▼ This study endeavours to research the field of literary historiography in general and specifically biographic historiography. In South Africa this genre has a limited tradition. Apart from a few diffused contributions by specialists in technical and other publications, and the essays by Hennie Aucamp in Beeltenis verbode and J.C. Kannemeyer in Getuigskrifte and Ontsyferde stene, very little research has been done in South Africa in this field. Chapter one expounds the research methodology. It briefly states the definition of the problem, as well as the goal orientation and the delimitation of the field of study, actuality, hypotheses and structural development. Chapter two affords the theoretical foundation of literary and more specifically biographic historiography. The concept "biography" is defined. The modern biography and its characteristics and structure are scrutinized in terms of different theoretical criteria. Finally this chapter contem-plates some problems experienced by contemporary biographers. Chapter three is an overview which sets out the history of biographic historiography from the most ancient times, during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the 16th to the 20th century. Biographic historiography in the USA is closely researched. Major achievements and the most important texts which influenced the genre are emphasized. The contributions of notable bio-graphers such as James Boswell and Lytton Strachey are highlighted. Chapter four is the core of this dissertation. Initially it contemplates biographic historiography in South Africa in general. Thereafter it researches literary biographies in depth. The earliest comprehensive literary biography in Afrikaans, Ds. S.J. du Toit in weg en werk by Totius, is discussed. Attention is drawn to Leon Rousseau's biography of Eugène N. Marais, which, in 1974, ushered in the true beginning of this tradition in Afrikaans. Subsequently the biographies of V.E. d'Assonville on Totius and S.J. du Toit are discussed. The major part of this chapter is devoted to the oeuvre of J.C. Kannemeyer, who probably made the most important contribution in this field with his comprehensive biographies on D.J. Opperman, C.J. Langenhoven, and C. Louis Leipoldt. Finally J.C. Steyn's monumental description of the life of N.P. van Wyk Louw, in two volumes, is discussed. The discussion and evaluation of these texts are set out narratively and comparatively. The said biographies are evaluated according to different biographic theories. Chapter five, a concise chapter, evaluates the hypotheses set out at the beginning of this research. Furthermore it is indicated that the field of biographic historiography in South Africa is still not properly exploited. Suggestions for further research are given. South Africa is a multi-ethnic country and contradictory political, cultural, socio-economic and language interests are not uncommon. Biographies could contribute to mutual understanding of these diversities, as manifested in J.C. Steyn's Van Wyk Louw: 'n Lewensverhaal. ▼ A notable paucity in practice interventions and literature currently exists in regard to self-support in first-time mothers. Recent literature and practice interventions seem to focus largely on social support resources, highlighting the deficiency in the investigation of self-support in first-time mothers as an integral and holistic concept and/or focus point for intervention. Literature continues to illustrate the many challenges first-time mothers encounter and therefore this study focuses on self-support experiences of the first-time mother in relation to her environment by providing an original stance of enquiry. The investigator aimed to explore and describe the experiences of self-support in first-time mothers in the Cape Metropole. The study was conducted qualitatively and according to an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) research design. This provided the researcher with a dual method of investigation: The first undertaking was to describe actual accounts of the participants‟ self-support experiences, while the second was to give an interpretation of these accounts which would reflect their experiences in an understandable, yet authentic manner. The meta-theoretical framework of Gestalt Therapy Theory (GTT) was applied due to its holistic and integrative nature, while the additional theoretical frameworks of Self Determination Theory (SDT) and Positive Psychology (PP) served as contributors to deepen understanding. The sample consisted of thirteen first-time mothers from moderately diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The study succeeded in giving in-depth exploratory descriptions of their self-support experiences during the first two years of motherhood. Findings displayed that the participants‟ self-support cannot be separated from their constantly shifting environments and that self-support is an integrated and dynamic process of development. Internal elements as well as environmental factors prove to disrupt this process of self-support development. Vital components for developing self-support were assuming responsibility for own well-being as a mother; as well as arriving at insight. Joy and gratefulness as experienced by the participants were proven to serve as motivators to sustain self-support. The study further exhibits that a supportive relationship is able to exist between the first-time mother‟s self-support and her environment when she is able to effectively identify, reach out and utilise social support resources available in her environment. Self-support serves as an experiential process (as an alternative to a fixed outcome) where the first-time mother is able, through experience, to mature and become more self-supportive. Findings argue that ideal self-support during novel motherhood is the capability to be in a mature interactive relationship with the environment, constantly adapting according to the organisation of the environmental field.

▼ Workers’ protection can be achieved, to a large extent, through labour law and workers’ organisation through trade unionism. Workers’ protection is defined as social protection. This study investigates workers’ experiences of their employment with regard to social protection as manifested in job security and wage adequacy. In this study workers’ perception of labour law, as a tool for workers’ protection, is considered in relation to the argument of the régulation theorists that law serves as a ‘mode of regulation’ to perpetuate the stability of the prevailing capitalist regime of accumulation. The impact of the changing nature of work on the effectiveness of labour law at achieving workers’ protection is investigated from the perspective of workers. A large employer subcontracting some support services was selected as a site of study. Data was collected using one-on-one in-depth interview to ‘tap’ into the working experiences of relevant workers and union officials. This study concludes that the changing nature of work as manifest in the decline of standard employment relationships and increase of atypical (non standard) employment, such as subcontracting undermines workers’ protection. Wages and other benefits of workers are affected. Workers survive through the support of their families and by borrowing from micro lenders which tend to suck them into a poverty cycle. The ineffectiveness of labour law to adequately protect subcontracted workers substantiates the position of régulation theorists that law is an extra-economic institutionalised practice helping to stabilize the prevailing capitalist regime of accumulation. The thinking here is that labour law is not unilaterally imposed by the state, rather, it is a product of social interaction (social relation) or struggle between labour, capital and the state within a social ‘field’ or ‘subfield’. The nature of employment of subcontracted work weakens the power of workers’ collective through trade unions. The restructuring of work leads to deunionisation and the ability of unions to organise these workers is undermined by difference in employer and pay-point between permanent workers and subcontracted workers. ▼ Children, growing up in this digital era incorporate technology into play, communication and learning. Therapists working with children endeavour to use mediums with which children are familiar and thus need to make a decision whether to include technology in or exclude technology from their therapeutic environments. This is no easy decision, in the midst of negative publicity regarding the role technology plays in children‘s lives. A deeper understanding of what encourages or discourages therapists from using technology as a therapeutic medium with children could guide practitioners in their decisions regarding the use of technology in therapy. The aim of this study was to explore and describe experiences of therapists using technology, as a therapeutic medium with children. A qualitative multiple case study design was used. Experiences were defined as the “active process" of reinterpreting the "physical, perceptual, affective and cognitive aspects" of being exposed to events to bring about a change in response options (McKnight & Sechrest, 2003:471). Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews and visual data. Seven therapists participated in the research, selected by means of non-probability purposive sampling and snowball sampling. Collected data and reflective field notes were analysed thematically, using an inductive, interpretive approach, guided by a theoretical framework, the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). Findings indicated that all participants were aware that children find technology appealing, but participants who were older or psychodynamically orientated were less inclined to incorporate technology as a therapeutic medium. Participants who were experimental by nature used technology as a therapeutic medium with some caution. Experimentally inclined participants who had received training in using technology used technology not only as a therapeutic medium, but also more confidently as a play medium. Participants were deterred mainly by the uncertainty of the therapeutic value of technology, the lack of ethical guidelines regulating the use of technology in therapy and the concern that technology may interfere with the therapeutic process. Further research regarding parents’ and child-clients’ perspectives of using technology in therapy would perhaps reduce speculative perceptions. Research regarding therapists’ values and perceptions of technology as a therapeutic medium could guide stakeholders in their development of training programs and necessary ethical guidelines.

▼ During the recession period of 2008/2009, global tourism declined by 8%. This was also evident is South Africa with the domestic travel market shrinking by 8% as well. However, this did not apply to the Kruger National Park (KNP) which experienced a sustained Accommodation Unit Occupancy growth of 1.6% during the same period. Visitors to the KNP thus see it as an attractive holiday destination irrespective of tough economic conditions characterised by less disposable income. To sustain this growth, it is important to be aware of the reasons visitors still visit the KNP during a recession. The aim of this study was to determine the reasons why visitors still travelled to the KNP during the 2008/2009 recession. This can be done by analysing the visitors’ behaviour and the motivational factors (internal feelings of the visitors) and determinants of the demand (income and exchange rates for instance) that influenced visitors’ choice to visit the KNP. To achieve this aim, a survey was conducted at the KNP between 15 and 20 December 2009 (high season). A total of 355 questionnaires were completed, after which a number of analyses were done to determine the effects of the recession on travel behaviour. For the purpose of this study, two articles were written. Article 1 is titled: “Motivations of visitors to the Kruger National Park during the 2008/2009 recession period”. The aim of this article was to determine the motivations of visitors to the KNP during the recession. A factor analysis on the motivations to visit the park was conducted, of which the following factors obtained the highest mean values: Escape, Wildlife experience and Family benefits. Push factors to the KNP were important to such an extent that visitors regarded visiting the park as a primary need or lifestyle. The results furthermore showed that visitors might have adapted their spending behaviour at the park to still afford to visit the park during the recession. This article provides a better understanding of visitors’ feelings towards the KNP, especially amidst recessions which, in turn, will improve niche marketing and a competitive advantage. Article 2 is titled: “Factors that influenced demand to the Kruger National Park during the 2008/2009 economic recession”. The aim of this article was to identify the determinants that influence the demand for visits to the KNP. Due to the homogeneous nature of the park’s market, the results of the stepwise logistic regression analysis revealed a few socio-demographic and behavioural determinants that influenced visitors’ demand to the park. The motives Escape and Souvenirs were the only two behavioural determinants while the provinces Gauteng and Mpumalanga were the only socio-demographic determinants. These two provinces are the two main markets for the KNP. Visitors indicated that visiting the KNP is a great way of escaping their busy metropolitan areas, especially in the Gauteng province. ▼ The purpose of the study is to determine the relationship between maternal employment and teenage character traits. Statistics show a significant increase in women entering the labour market and although demographics are changing rapidly, social attitudes and policies may lag behind, and the concept of mothers as principal caretakers and fathers as economic providers remains very much in place. The profound and sometimes contradictory convictions of individual members about working mothers and their children paralleled those of countless others and professional people where matched only by the equally profound lack of facts on which these convictions might be based. The objective of the study is to measure the perceived character traits of teenage children in terms of self confidence, locus of control, independence, time management and ambition. The questions were measured within two different scenarios: the first, within households where both parents are employed, and the second, within households where only the father is employed. The aim of the study is to determine if there is any correlation between maternal employment and the presence or lack of presence of the specified character traits. The empirical study was conducted using the quantitative research method with a non–probability sample. The data collection method used for the purpose of this study was in the form of questionnaires, based on the Likert scale. The content validity of the questionnaire was evaluated by a subject matter expert, while the face validity was determined by the Statistical Consultation Services of the North West University. Analysis of completed questionnaires involved descriptive statistics and practical significance. The target population, high school teachers within the North West and Gauteng Province, consisted of 70 participants. Based on the findings emanating from the research, there were no noticeable difference found between teenagers within households where both parents are employed and households where only the father is employed, although the results indicated a tendency for children within households where both parents are employed to be slightly more self confident, lean more towards an internal lotus of control, have higher ambition and are less dependent than those teenagers from households where only the father is employed. These findings, although not noticeable, agree with the literature. There were limitations that had an impact on the results of this study. The limited population resulted in a small sample. The sample indicated that 41 percent have five years or less experience. Participants indicated that they are not always aware of the household dynamics. Additional limitations include the strict ethical roadblocks when conducting research on children. It was recommended that a more comprehensive study should follow, which should include the participation of mothers and teenagers alike. This will give the researcher a distinct and clear result of what the influences could be within the household dynamics.

▼ The aim of this study is to explore and describe children’s experiences of the repositioning of their psychological birth order in a reconstituted family. The aim of this study is also to contribute to a better understanding of this phenomenon to aid the parents of these children as well as professionals working with such families. The systems theory was used as the meta-theory of this study. Gestalt field theory formed the connection between the systems theory and Adlerian theory, to portray the interaction between the individual and the different subsystems of which they are part, and formed the lens through which the study was done. Adlerian theory was used to explain the subsystems function in the micro system, with the focus on children’s experiences of the repositioning of their birth order in a reconstituted family. A qualitative research method with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used as research design. Eight children took part in this study. The researcher used semi-structured interviews to explore their experiences of the repositioning of their psychological birth order and the data was analysed thematically. The researcher had a discussion with the participants’ parents to determine the children’s psychological birth order and to obtain background information regarding the original and reconstituted families. The findings indicated that children’s experiences in relation to their parents and siblings had the most profound effect on how they experienced the repositioning of their psychological birth order in a reconstituted family. It seemed that participants preferred their parents treating them congruent to their psychological birth order within the reconstituted family and they experienced incongruent treatment to their psychological birth order, as negative. Participants enjoyed being favoured by their parents. If the sibling who caused the repositioning was favoured, or his or her parents unfairly blamed the relevant participant, it contributed to tension in the sibling and child-parent relationships. Participants seemed to associate less time spent with parents as well as less attention from parents with step- and half-siblings in the reconstituted family. Participants expressed less responsibility in the reconstituted family as a favourable aspect and more responsibilities in the reconstituted family as a unfavourable aspect of being repositioned. In the participants’ experiences, which related to their siblings, the children seemed to defend their psychological positions in their renegotiation for new positions and roles in the reconstituted family often resulting in power struggles and sibling rivalry. Age and gender differences played a role in this process. When participants were ineffective in their negotiation of a new position within the new sibling subsystem, feelings of isolation were reported. ▼ Exploration of factors that lead to early termination of therapeutic services to sexually abused children at TygerBear Unit. Some children referred to TygerBear Unit because of sexual abuse did not complete their therapeutic intervention programmes and possibly did not receive sufficient time to work through the trauma of sexual abuse. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and describe the factors that result in the early termination of sexually abused children’s therapeutic services at TygerBear Unit. Applied research that is exploratory and descriptive in nature, with the case study method as strategy, was followed. Data were collected through telephonic and/or one-on-one semi-structured interviews, in addition to the use of notes in personal records. Respondents included parents and/or caregivers of children whose therapy was terminated early, as well as social workers involved with play therapeutic service delivery to these children. Information was analysed with reference to the Field Theory, Ecological Theory and the relevant literature. ▼ Počátek nového tisíciletí se nesl v duchu vzrůstajícího zájmu podniků o to, aby zastávaly ve společnosti více než jen ekonomickou roli. Tento zájem se jim dařilo naplňovat především prostřednictvím konceptu společenské odpovědnosti firem (CSR). Díky nedávnému poklesu výkonu ekonomiky však došlo k přehodnocení podnikatelských aktivit, koncept CSR nevyjímaje. Tato dizertační práce se zabývá vlivem recese na CSR v podnicích. Jedná se o aktuální téma, jelikož důsledky ekonomické krize stále silně ovlivňují podnikatelský sektor, zejména v oblasti poklesu vzájemné důvěry či v nedostatečném plnění morálních závazků podniků vůči společnosti. Aby bylo možno zmapovat celkový vývoj situace, výzkum byl proveden u tří podniků, které se CSR zabývají dlouhodobě. Prostřednictvím výzkumné metody, kterou byla případová studie, byl zjištěn dopad recese na koncept CSR a také byl nastíněn trend budoucího vývoje. Na základě zjištění byl vyvozen závěr, že ekonomický pokles CSR nezastavil, nýbrž jej nasměroval k vyšší efektivitě. Bylo též prokázáno, že CSR pomohlo podnikům lépe překonat období recese. Recese podniky naučila, jak je CSR důležité nejen pro ně samotné, ale i pro celou společnost.; During the last few years, companies have had an increasing interest on playing a more significant role in society, besides their merely economic function. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a relevant concept leading them to do so. However, after the recent economic decline, the business model of most corporations had to be reviewed, including the CSR policy. This dissertation work discusses the impact of recession on CSR. The topic is highly relevant, since the consequences of the economic crisis have still a strong influence on business environment, in the form of a degrading level of trust and a decline of moral commitment to society. In order to evaluate this phenomenon, a research was conducted in three companies that are engaged in long-term CSR. With case study as research method, the impact of recession on CSR has been identified and a trend for future development has been outlined. As one of the main conclusions of this research it was proved, that after the economic decline, rather than dismissed, CSR was re-aimed in a more efficient way. CSR has helped companies to survive better the economic crisis and has taught them, how it can be beneficial not only for business but also for the society. ▼ ‘Wat is zuiverheid? En waarom verlangen mensen daarnaar?’ Met deze twee vragen begint Arnold Labrie zijn studie Zuiverheid en decadentie. Over de grenzen van de burgerlijke cultuur in West Europa, 1870-1914 (2001, p. 15). Ze vormen ook het vertrekpunt van deze scriptie, waarin het zuiverheidsdiscours in een drietal romans van Adriaan van Dis onder de loep wordt genomen. Allereerst wordt aan de hand van theorieën van onder anderen Arnold Labrie (2001), Mary Douglas (1966) en Julia Kristeva (1980) een theoretisch kader gevormd. Hierin komt naar voren dat het verlangen en streven naar zuiverheid een utopisch karakter kent, aangezien het zuivere altijd hand in hand gaat met het onzuivere. Wat blijkt is dat het streven naar zuiverheid niet alleen iets is van alle tijden, maar ook in tal van domeinen; we zien het onder andere terug in de politiek en religie en op persoonlijk vlak. In deze scriptie ga ik ervan uit dat het streven naar het opnieuw bevestigen van traditionele grenzen en het verlangen naar zuiverheid voortkomt uit de dreiging dat de bestaande orde en de daaraan gerelateerde, persoonlijke identiteit verstoord is of zal worden verstoord. Met deze stelling als uitgangspunt analyseer en interpreteer ik drie romans van Adriaan van Dis: Zilver (1988), Dubbelliefde (1999) en Tikkop (2010). In de romans wordt (het verlangen naar) het zuivere vaak direct genoemd, maar ook indirect genoemd, dat wil zeggen gethematiseerd. Door middel van close reading breng ik de motievenstructuur van de romans in kaart. Labrie koppelde zijn onderzoek naar zuiverheid aan de burgerlijke cultuur in West-Europa rond 1900, die werd getekend door een ‘diepgaande identiteitscrisis’. In deze scriptie laat ik de cultuurhistorische context buiten beschouwing en hanteer ik het begrip zuiverheid als een conceptueel instrument om de opbouw van de romans en individuele problematiek van enkele personages van Adriaan van Dis tegen het licht te houden. Ik heb aangetoond dat zuiverheid in de drie besproken romans een belangrijke rol speelt. Ze draagt met name bij aan de identiteitsvorming van de hoofdpersonages. Hoewel zuiverheid niet altijd het hoofdmotief is, fungeert ze mijn inziens als een sterk sturend motief. Dit komt naar voren uit de analyses en is onderbouwd met drie bijlagen die een overzicht geven van het aantal keren dat zuiverheid/het zuivere direct en indirect voorkomt in de romans. ▼ Cílem práce je odvození analytických vztahů pro výpočet deformace obdélníkové desky pomocí Kirchhoffovy a Mindlinovy teorie. V první části jsou uvedeny základní rovnice pružnosti, ze kterých toto odvození vychází. Vztahy z obou teorií jsou dále vyřešeny Navierovou metodou Fourierových řad. Tímto mohou být tyto dva odlišné přístupy srovnány. Srovnání je provedeno pomocí programovacího jazyka Python, do kterého jsou dosazeny výsledné vztahy průhybů jednotlivých teorií a po zadání vstupních parametrů je poté možné získat velikosti průhybů po celé ploše desky. Součástí je rovněž popis historického vývoje od 2. poloviny 18. století, až po vznik metody konečných prvků. Závěrem práce jsou obě teorie aplikovány na konkrétní příklady a výsledky jsou opět porovnány. Srovnání je učiněno také s hodnotami získanými pomocí metody konečných prvků. Díky tomu mohou být také nastíněna jistá omezení a vhodnost řešených teorií.; The aim of the thesis is to derive the analytical equations for calculating the deformation of a rectangular plate using Kirchhoff and Mindlin theory and their subsequent application. The first section provides some basic relations in the theory of elasticity, on which this derivation is based. Both of the theories are solved using Navier method of Fourier series. By the following the results of these two methods can be compared. The comparison is carried out using Python where the derived relations with given input parameters are used. This is how the magnitude of deflection over the entire surface of the plate is obtained. Historical part includes a description of the gradual development from the second half of the 18th century, up to the invention of the finite element method. Finally, these theories have been applied to some specific examples and the results have been analyzed and consecutively compared with results from ANSYS. The limitations and suitability of these theories are then outlined. Advisors/Committee Members: Hrstka, Miroslav (advisor).

▼ Disertační práce je zaměřena na analýzu ekonomických dynamických systémů z hlediska teorie chaosu a vypracování metodiky detekce deterministického chaosu. Úvod je věnován fundamentálním otázkám filozofického charakteru související s teorií chaosu, především pak otázce determinizmu. Dále se věnuje samotné teorii chaosu a jeho vlivu na vědecký výzkum. Deterministický chaos je typ komplexního chování vyskytující se v deterministickém systému. Jedná se tedy o systém striktně deterministický bez jakékoliv náhody. Dlouhodobá předpověď je tedy z hlediska teorie chaosu nemožná. Následují úvahy o využití teorie chaosu v ekonomii, které jsou dokresleny Gabischovým a Kaldorovým modelem. Významná část práce se v teoretické i praktické rovině věnuje detekci chaosu v ekonomických časových řadách. Byly použity jak klasické deskriptory, tak i nejnovější metody mnohdy prvně aplikovány na ekonomické časové řady. Mezi klasické deskriptory řadíme míru vzájemné informace, největší Ljapunovovův exponent, fraktální dimenze, entropie, Hurstův exponent. Dále byla aplikována poměrně nová metoda 0-1 test pro detekci chaotického chování. Ověření metodiky je provedeno na dvou časových řadách (finanční a makroekonomické). Jako příklad finanční časové řady byla zvolena časová řada spotových cen elektrické energie PHELIX. Jako příklad časové řady makroekonomických ukazatelů bylo zvolené čtvrtletní tempo růstu HDP v USA. Byl proveden odhad základních chaotických deskriptorů těchto časových řad. U HDP je nutné brát v úvahu nedostatečné množství dat pro kvalifikovanou analýzu. Pokud je Ljapunovovův exponent kladný, korelační dimenze nabývá nízkých neceločíselných hodnot a Kolmogorova entropie je kladné konečné číslo, potom je daný systém pravděpodobně chaotický. Z vypočtených hodnot je možné učinit závěr, že u časové řady spotových cen elektrické energie je chaos přítomen. To bylo potvrzeno výsledkem 0-1 testu. Dále byl spočítán Hurstův exponent, který u chaotické časové řady identifikuje dlouhodobý paměťový cyklus. Advisors/Committee Members: Fialová, Helena (advisor).
