▼ 'BRIC' is an acronym created by Jim O’Neil to describe some of the world’s leading emergingeconomies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, and China. During 2010, the members of the group included
South Africa and 'BRIC' was renamed 'BRICS'. The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether
South Africa should be included in BRICS, taking into account that the country represents the whole of
Africa. Data was collected by means of self- administered questionnaires and face-to-face semi-structured interviews. The results suggest that
South Africa should be included in BRICS as it is depicted as the regional leader and gateway to the continent. This is demonstrated by its global economic prominence especially through multilateral organisations such
as SADC, AU, and it is the only African country in the G20. It is recommended that
South Africa should work together with other African countries and encourage their inclusion in achieving common economic goals.

▼ This study was aimed at investigating the high level of consumer indebtedness in the South African retail market more specifically factors that contribute to consumer indebtedness. Recommendations on how to control the level of consumer indebtedness are also presented. Consumer indebtedness is a problem in many countries around the world and as witnessed during the 2008 global financial crisis, its impact can be disastrous. Not only does it create problems for the families but also for a country and even to the extent of the whole world. The literature conducted did not reveal a study undertaken to investigate factors that impact consumer indebtedness. Eight factors were identified and explored further in this study. Results were analysed in chapter three and outcomes presented in chapter four. The method used in conducting this study is the quantitative method. A questionnaire was developed based on the literature review conducted. The questionnaire was a five point Likert scale and was distributed to the respondents in the southern area of Tshwane Municipal district. In view of a manageable number of responses, results were analysed using an excel spreadsheet. Results were verified by an independent expert. From the eight factors that are identified, one (easy access to credit) was found to impact the high level of consumer indebtedness. Although there are other weaknesses, easy access to credit is found to be the main contributor. Recommendations on the findings are presented in chapter five of this study.

▼ This research seeks to advance knowledge of the current state of entrepreneurship and small businesses in South Africa, and reports on a review of 32 articles and 244 research abstracts in the field. The studies as a whole indicate that entrepreneurs in South Africa require more knowledge in the fields of: Networking in business, Internationalisation of business, Entrepreneurship training. Since the 1990s, research in entrepreneurship has grown in terms of the number of articles published and conference papers presented. In many countries entrepreneurship has also become part of the political agenda as it is perceived as a possible solution to high unemployment rates. In addition, interest in entrepreneurship has heightened during the 2000s, especially in business schools. Much of this interest is driven by student demand for courses in entrepreneurship, either because of genuine interest in the subject, or because students see entrepreneurship education as a useful hedge given uncertain corporate careers. Most of the entrepreneurship research abstracts reviewed for this study focused on race, gender and ethical issues in South Africa. These three research topics focused on: Attitudes and experiences of black women: differ from other racial groups in business with the results indicating that black women were competent and highly-motivated, but lacked communication skills and Western business orientation. Many black women also desired equality although their male counterparts opposed this. Black women also lacked role models and career guidance. Different population groups participate in the economy: reflect regional, income, expenditure, skill, occupational and labour differences, including labour supply and demand. Ethics concerns: include whether it should be taught in the human resources management curricula taught in universities. From the findings it appeared that entrepreneurship research in South Africa is fairly similar to international research contexts. As entrepreneurship and small businesses are diverse and multi-disciplinary, the studies reviewed indicated a wide range of different models, theories, frameworks, and combinations of these. However, the theoretical richness of the studies reviewed was, in many cases, relatively low, and only a few of the studies could be regarded as highly-theoretical. In addition, the presentation of the various theories and models applied was very often inadequately reported. It is also important to note that altogether between 7 and 11 percent of the studies were without any well-argued theoretical framework. Thus, researchers in the field should discuss the theoretical frameworks applied in their empirical analyses, to ensure this will improve the theoretical understanding of the phenomenon. Although this study made use of the mixed-method approach to conduct the research, it is also important to note that, in 12 percent of cases, methodological issues were poorly described. Most of the studies often did not describe the data collection response rate provide sample…

▼ It has been twenty years since F W De Klerk unbanned the African National Congress. This momentous occasion changed overnight the business landscape in South Africa and the way business were done for many decades. Before and after this crucial moment in South African history, leaders played a significant role in bringing change about as well as managing it. Whether hierarchical or non-hierarchical, leadership manifests itself through all spheres of civilisation. Within any collective, formal as well as informal leadership are always at work and within the environment there always seems to be an individual that appears to hold equal or more influence and sway over the collective. This research investigates the characteristics and role of this individual, the informal leader. In addition, against the melting pot of the diversity of culture, social structures, economics, and demographics in South Africa, the influence of culture on how leadership is being perceived and experienced is also researched. The research is grounded in a post-positivists approach and conducted within a constructivist-interpretative paradigm. A qualitative approach is followed with personal interviews as the method to collect the data from respondents. The interview protocol consists of a combination of questions containing questions of both a quantitative and qualitative nature. Questions of a qualitative nature were open-ended and of an in-depth nature. The research is two pronged. The focus of the research is an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in the South African Motor Industry and for the primary goal of the research data was collected from employees within work groups of the OEM. The primary research goal investigates the role and characteristics of informal leaders in work groups as seen and experienced by their fellow employees and if there is any congruence with that of the role and characteristics of formal leaders. The study found no fundamental differences between the characteristics and role of formal and informal leaders. The characteristics and role of leaders between different cultures also appear to be the same. For the secondary research goal – determining whether the role and characteristics of informal leaders in work groups could be underpinned in the principles of Ubuntu and if consideration should be given to any cultural differences between leaders and followers by organisational hierarchies – the literature was reviewed in order to reach a conclusion with regards this goal. The literature indicates that culture does affect leadership, especially on how the leadership is executed and experienced in a multicultural society and if ignored, will have a detrimental effect on effective leadership. In order to strive towards achieving maximum productivity, it is imperative that management in South African organisations be aware of the changed dynamic within their organisations as well as on the global stage. The research therefore ends with the practical implications of informal leaders for organisations in South Africa.…

▼ Mini-dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Durban University of Technology in partial compliance with the requirements for a Master’s Degree in Technology: Homeopathy, 2008.
A survey method was employed to investigate the perceptions of nurses in eThekwini towards homeopathy. The aim of this study was to answer the following questions: What does the nursing community in the eThekwini region know of homeopathy? Does homeopathy have a role to play in a hospital setting in the context of South Africa? The study population was all nurses with 5 years experience or more working in hospitals in the eThekwini region. The sample was drawn from 6 public and 5 private hospitals and included staff nurses and professional nurses. A total of 330 questionnaires were distributed and a total of 200 questionnaires were returned (60.6%). A total of 93 nurses (46.5%) responded from the public sector and 107 nurses (53.5%) from the private sector. The study was carried out using a questionnaire as a measuring tool. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics using frequency tables and bar charts. The Pearson’s Chi Square Test was used on selected data.
The majority of respondents were female (94%) and were between the ages of 26-35 and 36-45 years. Most of the respondents had been practising for 6-10 years and 11-15years. 19% of the total number of respondents had never heard of homeopathy and 10% indicated that they were quite familiar with the homeopathic profession. Of those respondents who had never heard of homeopathy, 71.1% were in the public sector and 28.9% in the private sector. Of those respondents who answered that they were quite familiar with homeopathy, 14.3% were in the public sector and 85.7% in the private sector. With regards to legitimacy of homeopathy most nurses working in the private hospitals (60.1%) perceived homeopathy to be a legitimate form of health care as compared to nurses working in public hospitals (39.9%). Generally, both groups considered communication and co-operation with homeopaths to be very poor. In total 79.49% of respondents said it would be beneficial to improve communication between the professions. The majority of respondents (70.06%) perceived that homeopathy does have a role to play in a hospital setting. Only 29.94% of respondents perceived that homeopathy had no role to play in a hospital setting. This indicates that many respondents perceive that integrated medicine is needed in a hospital setting.
This study reveals that the respondents had a positive view of homeopathy in general, and were open to learning more about it, and to cooperate with homeopaths. The finding that knowledge of homeopathy is low, and communication between the two professions is poor, can be addressed through suitable publicity and education programmes.

▼ The introduction of curriculum changes in mathematics has brought about challenges for both mathematics teachers and learners in South African schools. Apart from introducing new curriculum content to learners, teachers cope with factors which impact upon their collective efficacy (the sum total of the self-perceptions of all the teachers in a particular school regarding the conduciveness of effective teaching, learning and assessment processes) and on the teacher self-efficacy of mathematics teachers (the personal self-perceptions of mathematics teachers to execute their mandates effectively in the teaching, learning and assessment of mathematics ) which consequently lead to mathematics learners developing better concepts in mathematics. This study focuses on the impact of collective efficacy on the implementation of the New Curriculum Statement (NCS) for mathematics teachers, teaching in schools situated in previously disadvantaged communities. It is within the context of the constraints that these schools face, not only the socio-economic barriers, but also the willingness of all the teachers to develop a culture of teaching and learning, and the consequent impact it has on the effective teaching, learning and assessment of mathematics in the classrooms of these schools, that the effect of efficacious/non-efficacious teachers in these schools is investigated. A mixed method approach by using quantitative data (generated from questionnaires) and qualitative data (generated from interviews) probe the primary research question, which aims to investigate the effect of collective efficacy on the introduction of a new curriculum by mathematics teachers. The sub-questions probe the specific efficacy relations relating to the primary research question in terms of the perceptions and perspectives of all the teachers about their respective sample schools, how these perceptions and perspectives influence mathematics teachers in the manner they perceive their control over the teaching, learning and assessment processes in the mathematics classroom, and the consequent impact it has on mathematics learners developing better concepts and ultimately achieving better academic results in mathematics.

▼ Among the world‘s ecosystems, estuaries have the highest total economic value per hectare. They are dynamic coastal biomes that provide a host of different goods and services to the surrounding terrestrial and aquatic environments and the people who utilise them. These goods and services include, inter alia, nursery areas for marine organisms, harvested natural resources (such as fish, shell-fish, bait organisms, reeds and mangroves), flood attenuation, water purification, nutrient and sediment sinks, waste disposal, transport, aesthetic beauty and areas for swimming, boating and fishing. Assessing the condition of estuaries is difficult as their state can change depending on what is being measured. Assessments have been carried out on the health of estuaries in South Africa with the results of these studies being used as inputs to the process of assessing the minimum water supply requirements for each estuary (ecological reserve) in order to maintain or improve its functionality. These ecological reserve requirements are assigned using Resource Directed Measures (RDM). These measures, however, have been criticised for being highly complex and too costly to implement for all South African estuaries within a reasonable time period. Another concern is that the levels of demand for recreational goods and services provided by the estuary are not taken into account when assessing estuarine value. It is important to understand that the use of estuaries for recreational purposes is inextricably linked to their health and sound ecological functioning. Although South African estuaries have been quite well buffered from impacts until only very recently, their use and pressures have escalated faster than what conservation authorities and policy makers have been prepared for over the last couple of decades. There is thus mounting pressure on estuaries as recreational outlets, which, in turn, has led to their functional deterioration as well as deterioration in the quality of the recreational experience as a whole. One implication for management is that more and more trade-offs have to be made in an attempt to balance the conservation and recreational use of estuaries.

▼ Employees who plan for retirement can contribute meaningfully towards building a sustained quality of life during retirement. The lack of pre-retirement planning and education, however, “weakens” an individual’s life satisfaction. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the impact retirement planning and education has on retiree’s UFE satisfaction and to determine overall individual quality of life. This research firstly discusses retirement, or the prospect of giving up work. The research study points to the fact that an overwhelming amount of research shows that retirement, as a social phenomenon cannot be understood except in the context of work, because the meaning of retirement is largely an outgrowth of the meaning of work. The study further suggests that the transition from work to retirement can be eased through planning. Beginning to plan for retirement several years before retirement is anticipated is helpful. The study points to quality of life as a multi-dimensional concept that refers to an individual’s overall life satisfaction and total well-being. The findings discussed in Chapter Five indicate a reasonable level of retirement planning and education amongst retiree’s who participated in the survey. Recommendations from the study indicated a need for individual counseling during retirement planning and education workshops

▼ It is important to the survival of the
Africa Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) population that breeding at the nest site is successful and that large numbers of chicks are fledged into the breeding population. Nest distribution on Bird Island is not random and locality preferences for breeding exist. Although it seems that sufficient area exists on Bird Island for penguin nests, it can hardly be considered as suitable to optimise breeding. During prolonged heat conditions, breeders relocated to nest sites that were sheltered. Nests that were below ground in burrows was the only habitat that did not suffer nest desertion whilst all the other habitat types (including those that were sheltered) experienced 2-3 fold declines in nest numbers. Nests density and the selection of suitable nest sites are significantly influenced by the stage of breeding that the majority of birds are in, yet nests that are shaded, well-ventilated and protected seem to be the most preferred sites for breeding. Adults that attempt to breed are considered then to be in a healthy condition and will usually lay a double clutch (Randell 1983). The frequency of double clutches being laid during the peak breeding attempt was significantly higher compared to the replacement one. Breeding failure was fairly similar to breeding success during the incubation stage for nests with double clutches however, was substantially higher in single clutches. The growth rate of chicks was best fit to the von Bertalanffy growth curve in 90 percent of the cases. The overall growth rate of chicks from double broods was faster than from single broods, however was not significant. A-chicks maitain a high growth rate until they fledged. Yet, the sibling B-chick recorded the lowest growth rate of the successfully fledged chicks and up to until day 30 recorded a similar weight to those chicks that failed to fledge. Contrary to findings of Randall (1983), chicks from single broods delayed fledging, recorded lowest overall growth rates and experienced the greatest weight loss of all groups, yet fledged successfully. In order for chicks to fledge successfully, they needed to obtain a weight of 1060 g before day 30.5 in their growth cycles to avoid death due to startvation later on. Single chicks that are raised from a double cluth, fledged more other than chicks raised from a single clutch. Unfit or ill-adapted breeders that are marginal in the capabilities of raising offspring, already manifest in a small clutch size and offspring unable to obtain adequate weights during the initial stages of growth

▼ Syngnathus the most speciose genus in the family Syngnathidae is widely in the Atlantic
and Eastern Pacific oceans. However, it is poorly represented in the Indian Ocean with
the only two species, Syngnathus temminckii and S. watermeyeri occurring in Southern
African estuaries and coastal areas. Syngnathus temminckii the most common
South
African pipefish has been synonymised with S. acus, as the morphological and genetic
divergence between these two populations has not been documented. There is also
uncertainty in the taxonomic status of S. watermeyeri, an endemic estuarine pipefish that
is restricted to two Eastern Cape estuaries. The purpose of this study was therefore to
compare biological, morphological and genetic variation of
South African Syngnathus
species among different populations/locations, and with European populations of S. acus.
Sixteen meristic and ten morphometric characteristics were quantified from specimens
obtained from field as well as various international natural history museum collections.
Univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate (principal component analysis and discriminant
analyses) analyses were used to assess morphological differences among the species.
Morphometric variables were adjusted as ratios of the standard length and using an
allometric procedure. ANCOVA analysis indicated significant differences between S.
acus and S. temminckii for the relationships of the standard length (SL) and all
morphological characters. There was no significant correlation between SL and snout
length, snout depth, inter-orbital width and trunk depth for S. watermeyeri. The analyses
provided evidence for distinct populations of S. acus, S. temminckii and S. watermeyeri
although morphological character differentiation was greater between S. watermeyeri and
the other two larger species. Although, significant differences were observed for meristic
characters, pairwise comparisons did not reflect a clear pattern of variability. Most of the
measured morphological characters contributed more than 70% to the morphological
variation between the populations. Plot of the canonical scores for the variables resulted
in the specimens clustering according to species groups and locations of S. temminckii. Sequences of 750 base pairs of the mitochondrial cytochrome gene from 11 localities
were compared with published sequences of other species of Syngnathus. Phylogenetic
analysis was performed using parsimony, maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian
inference (BI). The
South African species were revealed to be sister-taxa with about 6 %
divergence, while S. temminckii and S. acus had about 11% sequence divergence. 20
haplotypes among 46 total specimens from the three species. Gene flow was estimated at
approximately 3 migrants per generation between the two
South African populations and
about 1 per generation between S. temminckii and S. acus. Such strong stock structuring
among presumably recently established post-Pliocene (< 2 Million years ago) populations
suggests that these species are reproductively isolated.…

▼ The uniqueness of the wildlife and the luxurious nature of
South African private game reserves could be seen as a valuable niche in the
South African tourism market and for this reason make
South Africa a desired destination. Due to complex visitor needs and demands regarding price, service, social connection, authenticity, quality or image, value perceptions will differ in terms of visitors’ experiences. If managers do not understand these value requirements, differences might exist between consumers’ and service providers’ perceptions of value. To maintain visitor satisfaction, loyalty and intention for return to the reserves, managers should continue to provide valued offerings and improve their visitors’ wildlife experience. This research investigated visitors’ perceptions of the value delivered by private game reserves in
South Africa and compared these with reserve managers’ perceptions of the value delivered. The results of this research study could contribute to a better understanding of perceived value, which in turn could enhance the success of the private game reserves. The literature contextualised the
South African private game reserve as part of wildlife tourism, the wildlife tourism offering and the characteristics of wildlife visitors. An overview of customer value, customer value models showing their development over time, and the conceptual framework of the current study was provided. The resulting conceptual model was used to evaluate managers’ and visitors’ perceptions of Quality, Monetary price, Behavioural price, Reputation, Emotional response, Social value and Novelty value delivered by
South African private game reserves.
The empirical data was collected by means of a survey, using two structured self-administered electronic questionnaires administered to the managers of, and the visitors to, private game reserves. One hundred and sixty two visitors and 30 managers participated in the survey.
By performing exploratory factor analysis it was found that the seven value factors were consistent with the value dimensions reported in the literature. These were labelled as Quality, Emotional response, Monetary price, Reputation, Novelty value, Social value and Behavioural price.
Most of managers’ perceptions of value provided exceeded visitors’ perceptions of value received. Both managers and visitors rated value items related to Emotional response highly. Considerably more managers (17 percent) thought that the reserve experience can be associated with good service, opposed to only 4 percent of visitors who perceived the service to be good. On the other hand, a larger proportion of visitors (29%) than the managers (20 percent) perceived the reserve experience as relaxing. Managers rated eleven of the thirteen game reserve attributes more positively than what the visitors did. Of these attributes, accommodation services, protection of the natural environment, game drives and service delivery, showed significant differences. It is recommended that

▼ M.Comm.
Transport is vital to development. Without adequate access to employment opportunities, health services, education and other amenities of life, the quality of life of the community will suffer. In developing countries and cities, where higher levels of poverty and unemployment are found and where resources are limited, the role of "good" transport becomes even more important. The dissertation identifies and describes a • number of urban transport problems being experienced in developing cities today. It refers to the experience of other countries that have been facing similar scenarios, as well as the steps they have taken (or are taking) to deal with them. This thesis suggests that South Africa can benefit from a closer look at some of these steps, and also identifies areas which require deeper research. The dissertation acknowledges that no single solution exists to solve the wideranging nature of the transport "problem". A combination of approaches would seem to be desirable. These include organisational changes as well as technological and infrastructural changes. The dissertation acknowledges further that no single study of this kind can investigate all of these solutions in sufficient depth. It does however deal with some of the organisational changes which are initially necessary to allow later technological and infrastructural improvements to be implemented more successfully. The organisational changes, most of which have already been investigated and researched in depth, include new contractual arrangements, such as privatisation and concessioning. They also include co-ordination and integration of services. The dissertation suggests that the "corridor" proposals of the Moving South Africa study will play an important role in underpinning the concept of co-ordination. As far as infrastructural and technological changes are concerned the thesis describes the "corridor" developments in the South American cities of Sao Paulo and Quito, both of which are introducing bus-ways of varying degrees of sophistication. These infrastructural improvements are being combined with the use of electric buses (duo-buses) drawing power from overhead lines. In Quito, this combination of infrastructure and new technology is handling large numbers of passengers at a level which is equivalent to that of many of the busier public transport routes in South Africa. The dissertation suggests that South African cities will benefit from these developments and proposes that an investigation into such improvements should be carried out. These include an integrated, co-ordinated formal public transport network for the Johannesburg area, and the introduction of corridors on which passenger vehicles of improved design (including duo-buses) could be used to maximum advantage. The dissertation acknowledges that the legislative and planning framework necessary to support such improvements is still being introduced. It points out, however, that the introduction of the proposed transport authorities, and the emphasis on the "corridor"…

▼ M.Sc. (Environmental Management)
As in many other countries, the processes of gentrification in South Africa have taken the form of urban regeneration. However, little geographical research has been conducted on gentrification in South Africa. This study adds to the literature by presenting the case of Parkhurst, a Johannesburg surburb, that has undergone gentrification. Parkhurst displays three of the four characteristics of gentrification: (1) the housing stock has undergone extensive physical improvement (2) property values have increased and (3) the original residents have been displaced. Although gentrification is usually also associated with a change in housing tenure from rentals to ownership, it was found that ownership was, and still is, a common feature, both prior to, and subsequent to, gentrification. The study found that Parkhurst has a demographic and a socio-economic profile typical of a gentrified suburb in that it is populated by young, educated and childless couples, many of whom are high- income-earning professionals, and new residents to the area. Due to its past designation as white space, this suburb is still a reflection of South Africa’s racially stratified past in that it is still numerically dominated by white people. Furthermore, the gender ratio is skewed in favour of males. Almost one third of the housing stock has been renovated or is under renovation. Some of the residential stands in the suburb have been converted into business units such as restaurants and antique shops. This research concluded that for Parkhurst the process of gentrification has been driven by consumptive patterns of behaviour, with individual consumption patterns in particular driving the process.

▼ M.A.
Even before the first democratic elections in South Africa in 1994, many Non-Governmental Organisations carried the torch of literacy for those South Africans who were not given the opportunity to learn to read and write, due to the inequalities of the apartheid education policies. Subsequent to the 1994 elections, the government took steps to formalise literacy initiatives and, in so doing, create national standards. Hence the birth of Adult Basic Education and Training. With the emergence of the South African Qualifications Authority, the ABET route was integrated into the National Qualifications Framework as part of the overall vision for standardised education in South Africa. Presently, the ABET route is mainly sponsored by the private sector who have shouldered the costs of these adult literacy initiatives. The formal ABET route is assessed by the Independent Examinations Board. This study illustrates how the formal ABET route does not adequately meet the goals of the department of Education in terms of its goals for reconstruction and development, nor does it guarantee the learner an improved future life, nor does it provide the private sector with the competencies they had hoped for in the workplace. Two of the most significant shortcomings of the formal ABET route were found to be the assessment process and the difficulty of the facilitation between the ABET route and qualification on the NQF. Based on the findings of this research, recommendations have been made. These aim to improve the flexibility of the ABET route and provide a number of options which may be more suitable for the needs of the learners, the corporate sector and the economy of South Africa as a whole.

Millions of people around the world watch motor racing on television, and millions of people journey to race circuits to experience personally the excitement and glamour [Howard, 1992: 81]. The ear-splitting noise, the smell of the fuel, the gleaming cars and the drivers - modem-day knights in armour, who do battle at unbelievable speeds. And behind every driver are sponsors, managers, engineers, mechanics and a whole team of professionals. Since cars were invented more than a century ago, men have felt an impulse to race them, while manufacturers have used the sport to prove the superiority of their vehicles.

▼ LL.M. (Law of Contract)
The parol evidence rule encompasses those rules that regulate the admissibility of extrinsic evidence. The parol evidence rule only comes into play when the court has to interpret a written contract and one of the parties argue that the contract or any specific clause does not reflect the common intention between the parties. The court will then follow a two prong approach in interpreting the contract. The court will firstly utilise the rules of interpretation, including the common law principles regarding presumptions. If this does not clarify the disputed clauses of the contract, the court will then rule on whether extrinsic evidence is permissible and consider such extrinsic evidence in an attempt to determine the common intention of the parties. The rules applicable to the admissibility of extrinsic evidence in the South African law of contract developed from a strict formalistic approach as applied in the Delmas Milling v Du Plessis case to an approach where any extrinsic evidence may be admitted, as long as it is admissible in terms of the rules of evidence and it falls within the category of what Harms DP stated in the KPMG Chartered Accountants (SA) v Securefin Ltd case as “context” or “factual matrix”. The KPMG Chartered Accountants (SA) v Securefin Ltd case finally brought the law applicable to the parol evidence rule in the South African law of contract on par with its American and English counterparts.

Authors and researchers from disciplines studying the relationship between social processes and spatial patterns agree that the characteristics of society, specifically the divisions within society, are mirrored in the residential structure of the city. The transformation of the former into discernible patterns of residential differentiation is effected by four mechanisms. These are residential mobility, the housing market, institutions and socio-spatial engineering, i.e. the manipulation of social and spatial structures by those in power to achieve certain social and political-ideological goals. The purpose of this study is firstly, to analyse the functioning of the mechanisms which shape the residential structure and secondly, to describe the divisions in society, i.e. , the socio-political basis of the South African metropolis, against the backdrop of its spatial implications on the residential structure. Thirdly, to describe the characteristics of the structure in terms of its spatial patterns and distinctive characteristics and lastly, to construct an explanatory model of the structure...

▼ M.Comm.
The normal pattern of life is birth, childhood, adulthood, old age and death. South Africa can still be seen in its childhood shoes in relation to countries like the USA, Japan and others. However, the playing field in the international arena that South Africa has to operate in when it comes to survival, is not divided between children and adults but instead, we are all competing on equal terms, and South African companies will have to realise that only the strong will survive. It is with this view in mind that this study has been undertaken in the hope that at completion South Africa will have its own management wave. South Africa is a country on its own with a history like no other country and a diversity like no other country. Therefore South Africa needs her own management wave, a wave out of South Africa for South Africa. The international competitive playing field is something new to South Africa and companies will have to adapt, or in years to come only a few of the current companies will have survived. To enable South African management to determine their own management a comparison of South Africa with her main competitors will be done, This will help to determine what is still needed in South Africa on the economical, political and educational fields and to help determine what South Africa need to survive for now and for the future. With this in mind it will be possible to start creating South Africa's own management wave which will enable companies, big and small, to still be part of South Africa in time to come, and to withstand the onslaught of overseas companies . South Africa is young, and has a very turbulent history, but with past happenings like: The Big Trek; The Boer Wars; The years of apartheid; The coming of democracy; it is clear that the South African people has got the will, stamina and strength to survive. South Africans now need to realise "EX UNITATE VIRES". It is with this in mind that the conclusion of this study will show South African companies, big and small, a new and unique management wave to follow. This new management wave will lead South Africa to a brighter future and a better tomorrow.

The aim of this dissertation is to establish the relevance, if not, of the debate surrounding standard and non-standard language with specific reference to the current South African situation. Some background to the debate is provided by means of a concise study of literature where opposing perspectives of several South African and foreign linguists are analysed. The debate is consequently viewed from an educational perspective. Attention is also paid to extra-linguistic factors currently influencing the unique linguistic situation in South Africa; South Africa's membership of Africa as well as its twenty-first century time-spirit comes under scrutiny. An empirical study tries to establish attitudes of a group tertiary college students towards varieties of English, i.e. Standard English, Black English Vernacular and Black South African English. Certain deductions are made from all aquired information whereupon some recommendations follow.

▼ M.A. (Industrial Relations)
The objective of this study is to examine the way in which the traditional role of the supervisor in South African industry is changing in the context of the social, political and economic transformation of the country. Because the author is on an overseas posting for the duration of the study period, it is not possible to conduct empirical research of any depth. Therefore, the dissertation is mainly a literature study based on the historical and present development of labour relations and the changing role of the supervisor. Where possible, the literature study is supplemented by unstructured interviews with training, personnel and industrial relations managers, supervisors and trade union representatives and workers in Scotland, Kenya and South Africa. It will be found that the changes to the position and role of the first line supervisors in the USA, UK, and Germany are more extensive than in South Africa. However, there is clear evidence that the management of South African firms are realising the advantages of long term strategies of empowering their employees, sharing information, and of good training and development programmes. within this context the study will establish that the role and position of the South African supervisor is indeed changing. It will also be pointed out that a significant problem facing firms in the "new" south Africa is a shortage of managers who are not only trained within their own sphere of work, but who are capable of recognising the role they and their subordinates play in the labour relations climate of their firm. The supervisor, at the interface between management, workers and shop stewards, is a key actor responsible for shaping and maintaining the firm's labour and human relations...

▼ M.Com. (Financial Management)
In this study, the extent to which performance persistence exists within the scope of South African collective investment schemes was analysed. In addition, the current practices of financial planners were investigated to establish whether or not financial planners use past performance as a criterion for recommending specific investment funds to investors. In other words, the extent to which financial planners are justified in using past performance as a criterion for fund selection was investigated. The study is exploratory in nature and is comprised of two phases, both of a quantitative nature. During Phase A, secondary data relating to the historical returns of South African collective investment schemes was collected to determine the extent of performance persistence over a one- and three-year period respectively. During Phase B, a cross-sectional survey was conducted to determine the practices of financial planners when advising investors on fund selection decisions. The findings revealed that performance persistence does not exist to the extent that past performance is an indicator of future performance. Financial planners, however, tend to utilise past performance as the main criterion for recommending specific collective investment schemes to investors.

▼ M.Ed. (Educational Psychology)
The dynamic and rapidly changing society of the R.S.A. has brought about such urgent requirements/need for change in the teaching profession that the present adult image has been subjected to scrutiny. This image calls for urgent analysis and evaluation so that the problems which surround education can really be addressed. This study has formed part of a project in which an analysis and description of "Adulthood" has been made. This could give direction for education in the R. S. A. The aim of this empirical investigation was explicitly directed at the importance of the different pre-identified facets in the evaluation of adulthood namely responsibility, moral and religious values, labour-orientation and self-sufficiency, responsibility towards fellow human beings, self-concept (image) and self acceptance, time orientation, citizen expectations and duties, family responsibility, perspective of future and family planning conservation as well as the economic demands and financial management and duties. This specific examination concerns the sense of responsibility as a facet of adulthood. As a result of sense of responsibility being such a complex concept, the investigator was compelled to select certain aspects and the importance thereof in an empirical manner. These aspects of the sense of responsibility were examined and are as follows : liability, integrity, conscientiousness, trustworthiness, loyalty, liberty and self-control. After the theoretical basis of the sense of responsibility was established, the research subject used in the examination was stipulated and the development of the empirical examination was stated. The following conclusion could be drawn from these statistics : regardless of the independent differences ego sex, language, qualifications, vocations, lecturers, age, permanent homes, religious ties, marital status, children and income, few differences in the view points of the respondents with regard to the importance of the sense of responsibility as a facet of adulthood occurred. The differences in the perception of adulthood which appeared were between the different sexes; qualification groups and religious groups (Christians and those with no religious ties) were statistically indistinct and thus did not influence the perception of the sense of responsibility. The analysis of the empirical information reveals that the sense of responsibility and more specifically the essence thereof namely: the human ability of trustworthiness, honesty, sincerity as well as responsibility, were viewed as important by all respondents. The aspects regarded as very important were: trustworthiness, integrity and conscientiousness. Through this, those approaching adulthood can be prepared to play their role in life so that they can eventually be well-adjusted, happy adults in the new R.S.A.

▼ M.Comm.
The size of South Africa's banking industry grew from R398 billion in 1995 to R471 billion in 1996 while banking transactions totalled R58 634 billion during 1996. Like most other service companies, the banking industry also experiences customer turnover. During the period March 1995 to February 1996 customer switch, which refers to the closing of an account at one institution and the opening of a new account at another institution, by clients of all banks amounted to 4,9 percent. Mutual interaction between a service provider and a client is a very important determinant of customer satisfaction with a service. It is therefore important for the company to focus on the retention of customers because it is more profitable to retain a customer rather than recruiting new customers. Customer switching can damage the future stream of income of a company. The loss of a customer therefore, is not only one transaction, the company looses a life long stream of income. Customer satisfaction therefore influences the primary source of future income of most companies directly. Quality service is of utmost importance for the success and survival of companies in today's competitive environment. To be successful it is necessary for each department within the company to operate effectively and to be client orientated. Companies believe that they will be more profitable if a marketing orientation is established within the company. Employees must therefore, understand their role in the total service chain. A client's perception of a service becomes reality when he/she experiences the service during a service encounter where interaction between the customer and the company takes place with the employee as intermediary. Employees of the company are seen as individuals who are in a relationship with the company similar to that between an external customer and the company. A company must therefore concentrate on both his external and internal clients because quality service rendered to internal clients results in quality service to the external client. The rendering of quality service is a very important dimension, in ensuring success and survival of a company. If investment in service quality therefore results in perceived improvement in service, quality is a profit strategy. Although theoretical studies suggest that companies offering a higher degree of service quality generate higher profits, no published studies or model exist where the total series of consequences, from the allocation of resources to customer satisfaction and eventually profitability, is discussed. Researchers believe that customer satisfaction results in profitability, but question the possibility of a positive correlation between market share and customer satisfaction. Against this background it was the purpose of this study to determine the impact of service quality, customer retention and staff retention on the market share and profitability of a financial institution by constructing a service quality-profitability relationship model to determine the…

At present the macro business milieu in South Africa is prevailed by a climate which, more than ever, imposes high demands upon employers and employees. It is evident that organizational effectiveness and the occupational success of individuals are increasingly dependent upon a purposeful intervention, by which the establishment of optimal interfaces can be facilitated. These interfaces have a specific bearing on the imbalance which often exists between the needs and expectations of individuals and those of the organizations by which they are employed. In this regard, it must be stated that the behavioural sciences, and in particular occupational psychology, can fulfil an important function in the establishment of the above-mentioned interfaces. A special type of problem occurs as a manifestation of the imbalance referred to above. This problem is created in circumstances of a high demand for management staff, when professionals are promoted to managerial positions outside their fields of specialization, and irrespective of the nature of their managerial training, experience and aspirations. An occupational group which is especially characterized by this phenomenon is the accounting profession. This problem gave rise to the objective of the present study and it was consequently decided to gather information on accounting persons in the early career stage against a frame of reference pertaining to the behavioural sciences. The approach adopted for this purpose was the determination of the career orientation(s) of early career stage individuals in different phases of involvement in the accounting profession. A literature study undertaken consisted mainly of life cycle theory, the career anchor and -orientation model as proposed by Schein (1975), and the nature and effect of professional occupations. Against this theoretical background the Career Orientation Inventory was administered to persons in the accounting profession. The sample consisted of the following groups: 1) full-time first year accounting students; 2) part-time honours students in accounting; and 3) Chartered Accountants in auditing and other firms. The empirical study yielded the conclusion that managerial skill featured as the most prominent career orientation of accounting persons in the early career stage. It was also evident that respondents who had had occupational experience measured highest on the same orientation, that is managerial skill, irrespective of their phases within the early career stage. Furthermore, there were indications that career orientation differentiation increased in accordance with occupational experience. From the study it appeared that knowledge concerning career orientation may be conducive to occupational counselling and guidance processes. A resultant implication of this may then be the creation of more realistic expectations which could enhance the establishment of optimal interfaces between the respective needs of individuals and organizations. In conclusion, it can be stated that a need was identified for…

▼ This study is situated in a social documentary photography context, and is concerned to explore whether the collaborative interaction between photographer, subject (as collector) and material object (as collection) might enable a practice that presents a more mutual and subject-centred visual identity emerge. In particular, photographers Jim Goldberg and Gideon Mendel have focused more on the subject themselves, using collaborative processes such as photo-voice and photo elicitation, as well as the use of peoples’ handwritten captions on photographic prints themselves. Claudia Mitchell’s overview of visual methodologies is drawn on, together with Ken Plummer’s Documents of Life 2 (2001) and Gillian Rose’s Visual Methodologies (2001) to extend on these possibilities of conducting collaborative visual research. The practical component of this study focuses on personal collections and follows a number of theorists, including Susan Pearce, and John Elsner and Roger Cardinal. It follows Pearce’s identification of three major modes of collecting, and suggests that collections are essentially narratives of the self, and reveal experiences and expressions of personal desire. By drawing on these approaches and the various ways the twelve collectors were photographed, as well as implementing collaborative research processes (handwritten text, archival photographs and the re-staging of the collections), the study confirms Pearce’s three primary modes of collecting, and acknowledges that they are often interlinked or overlap one another. The study further found that a more subject voiced visual identity did indeed become apparent through the collaborative methods applied and discussed. The collaborative research equally demonstrated that these narratives of identity are not singular, but rather narratives of multiple, personal identities of the self.

▼ Successful business in today’s competitive climate thrives on building relationships with one’s suppliers, clientele and employees. Businesses, as a form of strategic engagement, extend their appreciation and recognition to these key role players with rewards (or incentives) such as prizes, holidays and free goods and/or services. This treatise examines the taxation implications of such rewards and determines that the market value thereof should be taxed in the hands of their recipients. This study also investigates possible indicators (or points of reference) to establish such market value and suggests alternate values that may be ascribed thereto for inclusion in the recipient’s gross income. Where the rewards are passed onwards by the recipient to its employees, fringe benefit consequences are occasioned and this study observes that the market value thereof should be taxed in the employees’ hands. The study goes on further to consider the position of the supplier (or provider) of the rewards and finds that the supplier is entitled to a deduction of the cost of the rewards it has provided to its clients or customers. This study also reflects upon the penal implications of not including the market value of rewards in gross income and notes that such non-inclusion constitutes a fiscal loss and is subject to an understatement penalty. Key recommendations on how such omission may be addressed by the tax authorities are also presented.

▼ Adaptive water resource management requires sound scientific based decisions, emanating from robust scientific data. The Department of Environmental Affairs are mandated for collaborative management of the South African coast, including estuaries, through the Integrated Coastal Management Act (Act no 24 of 2008) (ICMA). The Department Water and Sanitation is mandated through the National Water Act (Act no 36 of 1998) (NWA) to design, test and implement monitoring programmes to provide water resource data. Extensive freshwater monitoring programmes exist in South Africa but there is no standard long-term monitoring programme for estuaries. This study designed and tested a National Estuarine Monitoring Programme (NESMP) that is anchored in the NWA and the ICMA. The design was based on a review of international estuary monitoring programmes, consultation with relevant role players and five decades experience in the design, testing and implementation of water resource monitoring programmes by DWS. The main objective of this thesis is 1) to design a national estuarine monitoring programme 2) test the design of the programme for practical implementation by reflecting on collected data from case studies, and 3) design a Decision Support System to translate complex monitoring data into management information. The main objective of the NESMP is 1) to collect long-term data to determine trends in the condition of estuaries in South Africa and 2) to provide management orientated information for effective estuary management. The National Estuary Monitoring programme consists of three tiers. Tier 1 focuses on basic data including system variables and nutrient data. Tier 2 collects data required for the determination of the Ecological Water Requirements (EWR) of estuaries in accordance with a standardised method used by DWS. A tailor made monitoring programme addressing specific issues including pollution incidents and localised development pressure, making use of a combination of Tier 1 and Tier 2 components, forms Tier 3 of the NESMP. This study tested the Tier 1 components of the programme on 28 estuaries across the South African coast since 2012. However, due to space constraints, the data reflected on in this thesis, is only for case studies on the Berg and Breede estuaries between 2012 and 2016. The results indicate that the establishment and operation of the NESMP on South African estuaries making use of monthly surveys, and the deployment of permanent water quality loggers, in line with the proposed protocol, are possible. This does however require collaboration with other role players in order to share responsibility and associated resources. A tiered management structure ensures national, regional and local level implementation takes place seamlessly. A decision support system (DSS) was also designed as part of this thesis to assist with data interpretation and the creation of management orientated information. This DSS includes a measurement of the percentage exceedance of the Threshold of Potential Concern (TPC), which…
