The existing model was extended by introducing the spatial variability of chosen material parameter in form of
random field. An experimental data from bending tests on notched and unnotched beams was exploited for the identification of model parameters as well as for the subsequent validation of its performance. With the basic and the extended randomized version of the model, numerical simulations were calculated so that the influence of the rate of fluctuation of the
random field (governed by the correlation length) could be observed. The final part of the thesis describes the region in the beam active during the test in which the most of the fracture energy is released in terms of its size and shape. This region defines the strength of the whole member and as shown in the thesis, it does not have a constant size but it is influenced by the geometrical setup and the correlation length of the
random field.

▼ The meat goat industry is one of the fastest growing agricultural sectors in the United States. However, there has been limited research on consumers’ preferences for goat meat; therefore, a choice experiment was used to assess consumer preferences for goat meat and/or live goats. A national online survey was conducted from April 27, 2012 to May 4, 2012. Respondents were asked to complete either the goat meat choice experiment, live goat choice experiment or both. In addition to the choice experiment, respondents answered a set of questions about goat meat consumption and purchasing behavior as well as demographics. The attributes that consumers evaluated for the goat meat choice experiment included, cut, color, source and price. The attributes that consumers evaluated for the live goat choice experiment included, age, sex, slaughter method, and price. The results revealed that goat meat consumers preferred chops and cubes over whole and half carcasses. The attribute, color, was not as important to consumers’ choice as hypothesized, in the estimated models the attribute was statistically insignificant or had a small effect on preference. Goat meat consumers valued domestic over imported goat meat. The random parameters logit model and latent class logit model revealed heterogeneous preferences. In the latent class model, age, gender, and consumption frequency did fairly well in defining the class; however, overall the demographic variables failed to distinctly characterize the classes. The results from the live goat choice experiment revealed that age and slaughter method were the most important attributes to consumers. These consumers valued younger goats and preferred to have the farmer to perform the slaughter.

▼ This work analyzes the concept of randomness in binary sequences from three different perspectives: mathematically, statistically, and psychologically and examines the research on human perception of randomness and the question of whether or not humans can simulate random behavior. Generally, research shows that human subjects have great difficulty producing random sequences, even when they are instructed and motivated. We survey some of the literature and present some leading theoretical proposals. Finally, we present some basic statistical tests that can be used to evaluate randomness in a given binary sequence.

▼ The point source is the most common type of source to be modeled for its effect on air pollution. Point sources provide auxiliary information that may impact both the mean and covariance structure of measured responses, but these possible impacts are often overlooked by spatial modelers. In this dissertation, we investigate the impact of point sources on both the mean and covariance by incorporating
subject-matter expertise to obtain large- and small-scale models of variability for two real applications. Inference proceeds according to the Bayesian hierarchical paradigm and is implemented using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods.
The first application focuses on electric potential in a field containing a metal pole. Variability due to the point source is captured by our newly proposed autoregressive point source model. This parametric approach allows a formal test of effectiveness of the point source, which is significant for capturing small-scale variability of the electric potential process. The second application focuses on pollution monitoring by the Kincaid experiments. By combining error components with deterministic atmospheric dispersion models (ADMs) to form our ECA-ADM, we formalize point source modeling to obtain prediction uncertainties. These error components are based on the default neighborhood structures created by the point source and already recognized by ADMs. In addition, a new spatial process, called the clustered double conditional autoregressive (CDCAR) model, is proposed to accommodate point sources. CDCAR includes commonly used processes, such as the conditional autoregressive and two-fold conditional autoregressive models, as special cases.

▼ Aim The aim for this present study was to investigate the acute metabolic response from intermittent resistance exercise during hypoxia, with the following research questions: (1) Are blood levels of lactate and glucose different between hypoxia and normoxia? (2) Does hypoxia induce higher lactate accumulation and pH reduction in the human skeletal muscle? (3) Is there a relationship between plasma-, blood- and muscle lactate? Method Eight healthy males (30 ± 2 years) performed 6 sets of unilateral leg extension on each leg (75% of 1RM) with randomized normoxic (20,9% inspired 𝑂2) and normobaric hypoxic (12% inspired 𝑂2) conditions. A total of 5 muscle biopsies was extracted from m. Vastus Lateralis (pre-, post exercise, 90-, 180min and 24h post exercise) during both normoxia and hypoxia trials, separated by one week for all participants. Blood samples were repeatedly taken with 20 min intervals. Heart Rate (HR) and saturation (𝑆𝑝𝑂2) were measured by a pulsoximeter during resistance exercise. Results No significant main effect was observed for blood lactate and glucose levels as well as the muscle lactate accumulation and pH between normoxia and hypoxia. However, pH in muscle showed a trend between the conditions post exercise where hypoxia reached lower levels in total (P=0.08). Significant correlations were observed for blood- and plasma lactate, where hypoxia showed a stronger relationship than normoxia (r=0.98 compared to r=0.87). Equal findings for the correlation of muscle- and plasma lactate showed an even greater coefficient value for hypoxia compared to normoxia (r=0.860 compared to r=0.59). Conclusion Summarized data indicated that no significant difference between hypoxia and normoxia was evident. Nonetheless, tendencies illustrate that hypoxia may alter the metabolic response slightly. However, further research is needed to draw a conclusion between the conditions.

▼ Little is currently known about the net benefits and, therefore, the importance of recreational fishing in Sweden from an economic point of view. This thesis is an attempt to fill this gap by providing a number of empirical valuation studies on recreational fishing in Sweden. Furthermore, the thesis also proposes a number of methodological improvements of the currently available methods for measuring environmental benefits. The empirical results suggest that the economic value of sport-fishing in Sweden is higher than previously thought. In studies carried out at the Byske river, the Kaitum river and in the Bohus region (which includes river, lake and sea fishing), I find that the net value per day is roughly about SEK 100 (with variations depending on quality characteristics, travel costs and so on). In contrast, earlier studies find values that are much lower. Furthermore, I also find that the marginal value (per kg or number) varies significantly according to the type of fishing (ordinary, put and take, coastal, guide-boat, river), ranging from a few SEK (coastal fishing in Bohus region) to several hundred SEK for obtaining a “trophy fish” in the Kaitum river. A simple way of obtaining the marginal value of catch for each respondent within a contingent valuation experiment is proposed. Secondly, a multi-attribute extension of the contingent valuation method is devised, allowing a straightforward way to estimate the value of changing site characteristics. Thirdly, a new approach to designing a choice experiment is introduced, showing how a theoretically consistent design procedure by approximation can be implemented in a simple manner. Fourthly, a re-interpretation of a model often used in valuing environmental goods (the Random Utility Maximizing (RUM) model) is offered. While we are able to estimate the value of fish management in several dimensions (catch and release, bag limit and so on), the next step is to fully integrate this effort with available insights from ecological modelling of fish resources.

▼ This dissertation presents three essays on the effects of different institutions, technologies, and shocks on health, education, labor and information outcomes using experimental and quasi-experimental research designs. Specifically, I consider the effects of social media, vaccination, and natural resources. In the first essay “The Economic Effects of Facebook”, joint work with Mofioluwasademi Odunowo, Trent McNamara, Xiongfei Guo, and Ragan Petrie, we study the effects of Facebook on news awareness, subjective well-being, and daily activities. We use a large field
experiment with a validated Facebook restriction to document the value of Facebook to users and its causal effect on news consumption and awareness, well-being, and daily activities. Those who are off Facebook for a week reduce news consumption, are less likely to recognize politically-skewed news stories, report being less depressed and engage in healthier activities. One week of Facebook is worth $67, and this increases by 19.6 percent after experiencing a Facebook restriction. In the second essay “Vaccines at Work”, joint work with Manuel Hoffmann and Adrian Chadi, we study how behavioral factors can affect the effectiveness of flu vaccination. Flu vaccination could be a cost-effective way to handle the costs of this disease, but low takeup rates, particularly of working adults, and vaccination unintendingly causing moral hazard may decrease its benefits. We ran a natural field
experiment with employees of a large bank in Ecuador where we experimentally manipulated incentives to participate in a flu vaccination campaign. We find that reducing the opportunity costs of vaccination increased take-up by 112 percent. Also, we find that the effect of vaccination on health outcomes is a precise zero with no measurable health externalities from coworkers. Using administrative records on sickness diagnoses and surveys, we find evidence consistent with vaccination causing moral hazard. In the third essay “A Blessing or a Curse? The Long-term Effect of Resource Booms on Human Capital and Living Conditions”, I study if resource booms can reduce human capital accumulation. These booms can increase the opportunity costs of education by favoring low-skill jobs, which makes it optimal for some cohorts to interrupt their education. If these individuals do not resume their education, they may lose pecuniary and non-pecuniary benefits of education in their lifetime. For a country, lower human capital may constrain its long-term growth. I use proprietary individual-level data to study the long-term effects of exposure to the 1970s oil boom on human capital in a developing country. I exploit variation in the timing of the shock and geographic differences in the cost of college attendance and find that exposure to the boom decreased college completion and increased low-skill occupations - consistent with the idea that individuals shift into highly remunerative low skilled employment because the boom decreased college education returns. In line with this, I find no effects on…

▼ This dissertation examines empirically the values that
consumers place on attributes associated with food products that
are difficult to verify in the absence of product labeling,
including organic, environmental and country of origin attributes.
The first essay addresses the impact of product labeling and
information treatments on a consumer’s willingness to pay for a
processed and packaged food through data collected from an online
choice
experiment. Participants completed five choice experiments
in which alternatives varied across four unique attributes: price,
country of origin, organic content and environmental friendliness.
Participants also faced varying levels of information regarding the
non-price attributes. Multinomial and
random parameters logit
models are used to measure the underlying
random utility model
preference parameters, which are then used to derive the marginal
willingness to pay for changes in attribute levels. It is found
that heterogeneity in preferences is significant amongst consumers
and that the presence of information regarding product attributes
affects both the mean and standard deviation parameters for product
attributes. Furthermore, country of origin labeling drives both the
highest and lowest WTP estimates, followed by organic content and
environmental labeling. The second essay takes a broader look at WTP
estimates for organic foods by use of meta-analysis, where
heterogeneity of values observed in the literature is explained by
both factual and methodological sources. A total of 29 papers
yields 132 observations for analysis and a meta-regression is
estimated using percentage premium as the dependent variable and
both product and study characteristics as independent variables.
Factual heterogeneity explains 65% of the explained variation in
percentage premium and includes variables describing the food type
under study, year of the sample and sample representativeness.
Methodological heterogeneity explains the remaining 35% of
explained variation and includes variables describing the data
elicitation method and study methodology. It is found that studies
investigating organic fruits and organic foods that are sourced
from animals have higher premiums, studies using contingent
valuation methods have higher premiums, and that the degree of
sample representativeness of a study has significant effects on
premium estimates.

▼ Strategic supply chain planning under uncertainty has
obtained significant attention in both practice and academia over
the last few years. While there have been a number of analytical
studies, empirical research on the effect of uncertainty in
different dimensions on individual decision-making is rather
limited. In three essays, we model how human decision-making gets
affected by various aspects of uncertainty on both upstream and
downstream level. Numerous studies have separately examined either
the impact of demand or supply uncertainty on ordering decisions,
although little empirical work has focused on distinguishing these
effects when both are present. Accordingly, in our first essay we
focus on settings in which both uncertainties exist simultaneously,
with the intent of shedding light on these possible distinctions.
We leverage a controlled laboratory
experiment in a modified
newsvendor setting with two suppliers of varying levels of
dependability and cost. While the impact of demand uncertainty
appears consistent with prior results, the impact of supply
uncertainty is more nuanced. Decision‐makers are drawn to the
reliable supplier in the high‐supply‐uncertainty case, subsequently
simplifying order decision making and decreasing deviation from
optimality. Supply uncertainty also appears to impose limits on the
extent to which experiential learning benefits optimal ordering
choice. In the second essay, we study the effect of a
service-reward mechanism – an endogenous relationship between prior
service level and current demand – on managerial decision-making in
both single-period newsvendor and a multi-period serial supply
chain activity. We conduct two controlled laboratory experiments
using two fundamental supply chain models: the newsvendor and the
beer game. Our empirical results suggest that the service-reward
mechanism significantly and systematically elevates order levels
and order variability in a manner that increases departure from
optimal ordering as well as the variation in that departure.
Moreover, a service-reward mechanism impacts the standard deviation
of absolute order quantities in the serial supply chain simulation.
Our findings help researchers and practitioners better understand
potential drawbacks of service-reward mechanisms or, similarly,
temper the expansion of procurement function involvement in
activities such as demand management. They may also help identify
managers that are most suitable for purchasing roles that may
explicitly confront service-reward mechanisms. In the third essay,
we collaborate with a large furniture retailer to study how the
end-customers’ request for split delivery of their multi-item
orders is affected by the fulfillment uncertainty. We implement a
balanced
random forest model to emulate the split order
decision-making with a manageable misclassification error rate for
predicting no splits for the orders that should have been split. We
develop a simplified rule for the retailer that could identify the
supply uncertainty associated with a multi-item order and…

▼ In discrete choice experiments, patients are presented with sets of health states described by various attributes and asked to make choices from among them. Discrete choice experiments allow health care researchers to study the preferences of individual patients by eliciting trade-offs between different aspects of health-related quality of life. However, many discrete choice experiments yield data with incomplete ranking information and sparsity due to the limited number of choice sets presented to each patient, making it challenging to estimate patient preferences. Moreover, methods to identify outliers in discrete choice data are lacking. We develop a Bayesian hierarchical random effects rank-ordered multinomial logit model for discrete choice data. Missing ranks are accounted for by marginalizing over all possible permutations of unranked alternatives to estimate individual patient preferences, which are modeled as a function of patient covariates. We provide a Bayesian version of relative attribute importance, and adapt the use of the conditional predictive ordinate to identify outlying choice sets and outlying individuals with unusual preferences compared to the population. The model is applied to data from a study using a discrete choice experiment to estimate individual patient preferences for health states related to prostate cancer treatment.

This paper has the objective of showing Buffon's needle problem, doing a minor generalization of the results obtained hereby, and also presenting some applications based upon the fundamentals of such problem. Buffon's needle problem has been inserted into the study of
Theory of Probability, particularly in its sub-area of geometrical probability. In order to attain the solution to this question, in addition to the concepts and the properties concerning the theory of probabilities, it is necessary that one should have some basic knowledge about
integral calculus. In chapters 2, 3, and 4 there is a preliminary study of probability, with the basic concepts, properties and formulation of some probabilistic models being presented. During the development of this paper, whenever it was possible, the concepts and definitions
were inserted with the aid of a motivational problem and they were solved by means of fixing the same examples as shown. The final chapter presents the importance of Buffon's needle problem as a method of making estimates and as a foundation for the process of capturing images in CT (computerized tomography) scanning machines, such a great breakthrough in what concerns the diagnosis by means of imaging.

This work has as objective introduce the basic concepts of the Theory of Probabilities and present notions on some probabilistic models for the student of the High School.
We will begin the work presented in chapter I the notions of experiment deterministic, random experiment, sample space and events, followed by some definitions of Probability concepts that constitute the basis for this theory. In chapter II we will discuss the concepts of Conditional Probability and Independence of Events showcasing some important theorems that derive from these concepts, as well as some of its applications. In chapter III we will present in a simple way some probabilistic models discrete quite useful for shape effectively a good number of random experiments thus contributing to the calculation of the probabilities of its results.
Finally, in chapter IV will be presented the probability model known as Poisson distribution, which allows us to calculate the probability that an event will occur
in a given time interval or in a given spatial region.

This thesis is devoted to the modelisation of the spontaneous formation of preferential paths by walkers that deposit attractive trails on their trajectories. More precisely, through a multidisciplinary approach, which combines modelisation and experimentation, this thesis aims to bring out a set of minimal individual rules that allow the apparition of this phenomena. In this purpose, we study in several ways the minimal models, which are the Reinforced Random Walks (RRW).This work contains two main parts. The first one proves some new results in the field of probability and statistics. We have generalized the work published by M. Benaïm and O. Raimond in 2010 in order to study the asymptotics of a class of RRW, to which U-turns are forbidden. We developped also a statistical procedure that allows under some appropriate regularity hypotheses to estimate the parameters of parametized RRW and to evaluate margins of error. In the second part, we describe the results and the analyses of a experimental and behavioral study of the Linepithema humile ants. One part of our reflection is centered on the role and the value of the parameters of the model defined by J.-L. Deneubourg et al. in 1990. We investigated also the extent to which RRW could reproduce the moving of an ant in a network. To these purposes, we performed…

Bargaining and Contract Choice: Evidence from Informal Groundwater Contracts
Informal market arrangements are often in place when formal institutions are too weak to establish a formal mechanism for resource allocation. In this paper, we study informal groundwater contracts in India, in particular, the bargaining power of sellers and buyers. We conduct an economic experiment with actual buyers and sellers of groundwater contracts, where agents make a series of choices between output-shared and fixed-price contracts, first individually and then jointly. Output-shared contracts are chosen more often when the decision is joint. Further, the likelihood of choosing an output-shared contract depends on the relative risk preferences of sellers and buyers. Sellers have a strong influence in deciding the joint contract. However, buyers’ bargaining power increases when they share interpersonal relationships with sellers, such as kinship ties, or have a long contractual history together.

Contract Choice and Risk Preferences: Evidence from Informal Groundwater Contract Choices in Rural India
Exploring the different contract systems in an agrarian market is important to understand their efficiency and equity aspects. This study analyses factors that can affect the choice of groundwater contracts in rural India. A primary survey and a lab-in-the-field experiment were carried out to obtain matched information about buyers and sellers of groundwater and to elicit their risk preferences. We find that the risk preferences of both sellers and buyers influence the choice of contract, which suggests a risk-sharing motive in the choice decision. A situation with a buyer who is more educated and older than the seller is associated with a lower probability that the contract is an output-shared contract, which implies the agents’ relative influence on the contract decision. The results are particularly relevant for groundwater contracts where the endogenous matching of agents is less likely be an issue.

▼ Paper I.
Asymptotic bias reduction for a conditional marginal effects estimator in sam-
ple selection models.
In this article we discuss the differences between the average marginal effect and the mar-
ginal effect of the average individual in sample selection models, estimated by the Heck-
man procedure. We show that the bias that emerges as a consequence of interchanging
the measures, could be very significant, even in the limit. We suggest a computationally
cheap approximation method, which corrects the bias to a large extent. We illustrate the
implications of our method with an empirical application of earnings assimilation and a
small Monte Carlo simulation.

Local Unemployment and the Earnings-Assimilation of Immigrant Men in
Sweden: Evidence from Longitudinal Data, 1990-2000.
The earnings-assimilation of first-generation immigrant men in Sweden was analyzed us-
ing eleven waves of panel-data, 1990-2000. Employment-probabilities and earnings were
estimated simultaneously in a random-effects model, using Mundlaks formulation to con-
trol for both individual effects and panel-selectivity due to missing earnings-information.
Assuming equal-period e¤ects produced bias which could distort the findings. To correct
the bias, local unemployment-rates were used to proxy for changing economy-wide con-
ditions. Labour-market outcomes differed considerably across immigrant arrival cohorts,
region and country of origin, and educational levels.
Paper III.
Monte Carlo Investigation of the Initial Values Problem in Censored Dynamic
Random-Effects Panel Data Models.
Three designs of Monte Carlo experiments are used to investigate the initial-value problem
in censored dynamic random-effects (Tobit type 1) models. We compared three widely
used solution methods: naive method based on exogenous initial values assumption; Heck-
mans approximation; and the simple method of Wooldridge. The results suggest that
the initial values problem is a serious issue: using a method which misspecifies the condi-
tional distribution of initial values can cause misleading results on the magnitude of true
(structural) and spurious state-dependence. The naive exogenous method is substantially
biased for panels of short duration. Heckmans approximation works well. The simple
method of Wooldridge works better than naive exogenous method in small panels, but
it is not as good as Heckmans approximation. It is also observed that these methods
performs equally well for panels of long duration.

of unbalanced panel-data during 1990-2000. Endogenous initial values were controlled for

▼ Driving in stop-&-go (S&G) traffic can be a frustrating experience and can lead to an increase in fuel emissions, driver distress and safety risks. Past studies have modelled the time spent in S&G traffic as one of the factors for the disutility of a route. These studies did not account for the effect of the number of S&G waves, which has been found to bear a closer relationship with driver discomfort. This thesis tests the research hypothesis that an increase in the number of S&Gs on a route increases its disutility for a driver. As a proof of concept, a Stated Choice (SC)
experiment was initially conducted on a sample of university staff and students. A D-efficient pivot design technique was used to generate the set of choice tasks. The competing routes were defined in terms of the number of S&Gs along with other travel attributes. The collected data was analysed using a
Random Parameter Error Component Logit model to account for the taste heterogeneity and serial correlation among the choice tasks. The results showed that the number of S&Gs negatively impacted the utility of a route, thus validating the proposed hypothesis. Another follow-up SC study was then conducted on a sample of general commuters in Sydney. The data from this study was analysed using a Latent Class Choice Model which relaxed the distributional assumption associated with the previous statistical model. The obtained results showed a negative effect for the number of S&Gs, except for nearly one quarter of the sample which was indifferent towards this attribute. Lastly, a driving simulator
experiment was conducted to further understand the role of S&G traffic characteristics on driver frustration. Participants were made to drive through virtual scenarios depicting varying S&G traffic conditions. A Structural Equation Model was estimated on the data which indicated that the number of S&Gs had a positive effect on the level of frustration and was also observed to influence route choice. The findings from this thesis not only extend the body of knowledge on intricate route choice behaviour of drivers, but also inform policies aimed at reducing traffic congestion and the resulting S&G traffic.

▼ The overall goal of this study was to analyse the
welfare effect of improved wastewater treatment with the view of
making policy recommendations for sustainable urban and peri-urban
irrigation agriculture in Kenya. This goal was achieved by
investigating three specific objectives. The first objective was to
assess the farmers’ awareness of health risks in urban and
peri-urban wastewater irrigation. Second objective was to analyse
the factors that affect the choice of low-risk adaptations in reuse
of untreated wastewater for irrigation. The third objective was to
estimate the value that urban and peri-urban farmers who practice
wastewater irrigation impute to improvements in specific
characteristics of the wastewater input in agriculture.
In order
to achieve the first objective, an ordered probit model was used to
identify the factors that influence farmers’ awareness of health
risks in untreated wastewater irrigation. The model was fitted to
data collected from a cross-sectional survey of 317 urban farm
households in the Kibera informal settlement of Kenya. Results of
this study show that gender of household head, household size,
education level of household head, farm size, ownership of the
farm, membership to farmers’ group, and market access for the fresh
produce significantly affect awareness of farmers about health
risks in wastewater irrigation. Therefore, there is need for
awareness programs to promote public education through regular
training and local workshops on wastewater reuse in order to
improve the human capital of the urban and peri-urban farmers.
To
achieve the second objective, the study used a multinomial logit
model to analyse the farmers’ choice of low-risk adaptations in
untreated wastewater irrigation. A survey of 317 urban and
peri-urban farmers was conducted and measures for risk-reduction in
wastewater reuse were analysed. The urban and peri-urban farmers
were found to have adopted low-risk wastewater irrigation
techniques such as cessation of irrigation before harvesting, crop
restriction and safer application methods. Results of the study
show that adoption of risk-reduction measures is significantly
influenced by the following factors: household size, age of the
household head, education of household head, access to extension,
access to media, access to credit, farmers’ group membership, and
risk awareness. Also, marginal analysis of the coefficients
confirmed the socio-economic characteristics are key determinants
in adoption of low-risk measures in wastewater reuse. The study
recommends that policies in support of low-risk urban and
peri-urban irrigation agriculture should disaggregate farmers
according to their socio-economic and institutional characteristics
in order to achieve their intended objectives.
To achieve the
third objective, the study employed the discrete choice
experiment
approach to estimate the benefits farmers impute to improvements in
attributes of the wastewater irrigation input, whose aim is to
reduce the health risks associated with untreated wastewater…

▼ As the world's most populous country, with more than 16 million births every year, China has emerged as a large importer of baby formula. China's relaxation of the one-child policy, which was announced in 2015, is expected to increase the number of births significantly and therefore increase the demand for Chinese and imported baby formula. While information on parent preferences for baby formula is very important for understanding and predicting China's import demand for baby formula and other products used to produce baby formula, like milk powder, there are very limited empirical studies on Chinese parent preferences for baby formula in the literature due to data limitation and other reasons. This research collects primary data from China through a parent survey, uses the data to analyze parent preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for selected baby formula attributes, and derives implications for U.S. dairy product exports. Specifically, with detailed data from a total of 433 respondents, this study first examines parent purchase behavior of baby formula through descriptive analysis, then assesses parent preferences and WTP for selected baby formula attributes through the estimation of a
random utility model, and finally derives implications for U.S. exports of milk powder, whey, and other dairy products.
The descriptive analysis suggests that education level and income play an important role in parent purchase behavior of baby formula. The estimation results of the
random utility model differed according to whether the survey was administered online or as a hardcopy. The results from the online survey indicate that imported, organic, and more reputable brands of baby formula are more attractive to respondents than domestic, non-organic, and less reputable brands. While respondents who completed the hardcopy survey also indicated a preference for organic baby formula from a reputable brand, they preferred domestic baby formula to imported formula. Further analysis of the WTP from the online survey for baby formula showed that parents have a strong preference and are willing to pay significantly more for baby formulas produced in Australia and the U.S. as compared to that produced in China. They are willing to pay more for organic baby formula and baby formula with an excellent reputation. The WTP results from the hardcopy survey indicate that parents are willing to pay more for domestic baby formula. They are also willing to pay more for organic baby formula and baby formula with an excellent reputation. China's emerging demand for imported baby formula, milk powder, and whey may bring more opportunities for the U.S. dairy industry, but U.S. dairy products are also facing increasing competition from similar products from other nations in the Chinese market. More studies are needed to identify the comparative advantages of U.S. baby formula and other dairy products in the Chinese market and to develop effective trade policies for enhancing U.S. exports to China.

▼ Efficient decision making in environmental management requires good data on the costs and benefits of changes in environmental quality. However, full assessment of the benefits of better water quality has been a challenge because some of the component values cannot be directly measured. The advent of non-market valuation techniques has made it possible to estimate these values. In this thesis, the travel cost
random utility model and fishing choice data from the National Angling Survey are used to assess the benefits of better water quality for trout anglers in the Rotorua Lakes and a choice
experiment is used to assess the benefits of cleaner streams for Karapiro catchment residents. We also explore three methodological aspects which may affect non market value estimates, namely within season variability, scale heterogeneity across individuals and respondent perceptions of the status quo.
Accounting for within-season variability in site attributes that are variable across the season may reduce multicollinearity. We find that differences in welfare estimates between models accounting for within-season variability and those that do not may result from differences in attribute and collinearity levels or the combined effect of both. We assess whether benefit estimates remain stable over time using models that account for scale heterogeneity across individuals and demonstrate that ignoring scale heterogeneity across the sampled population may result in researchers erroneously concluding that estimates of marginal willingness to pay are stable over time. A choice
experiment on preferences for stream water quality is used to assess the effects of respondent’s perception of status quo conditions on welfare estimates. The results build on earlier findings which suggest that failure to take account of respondents’ beliefs leads to biased welfare estimates.
Overall we find that lakes with better water clarity, that are larger in size, with bigger fish, more facilities and more forest cover are preferred. Similarly, streams with water quality that is suitable for swimming and where trout are found, are preferred. We estimate the aggregate annual benefit for anglers of a one metre increase in water clarity in all the Rotorua Lakes which currently have poor or average water water quality to be NZ2.3 million. The travel cost RUM is also used to assess the overall benefit that trout anglers obtain from each lake. The annual level of these benefits totals NZ21.7 million.
