▼ Multi-watt lasers with an output wavelength in the eye-safe band are required for many remote sensing applications, including Doppler or coherent laser radars (CLR’s). Er:YAG lasers at 1617 nm or 1645 nm operating on the ⁴I₁₃/₂ to ⁴I₁₅/₂ transition can potentially satisfy this need. Although this transition has been known for many years, the development of diode pumping makes these lasers practical. Doppler wind-field mapping requires single frequency, diffraction limited pulses at a high pulse repetition frequency (PRF) to provide a spatially dense array of samples, allow signal averaging with minimal loss of temporal resolution and to minimize the time required to scan an extended volume. Pulses with energies >few mJ and pulse durations of >100 ns are essential for these measurements. Such requirements can be satisfied by continuous-wave (CW) pumping of a
Q-switched free-space laser. In this thesis I describe the design and development of a single frequency, continuous wave, Er:YAG laser at 1645 nm that uses resonant pumping at 1470 nm. With an intra-cavity polarizer and uncoated etalon, it produces up to 30 mW in a narrow line-width, single frequency, plane polarized, diffraction limited, TEM00 output. The laser is suitable as a master oscillator of a CLR. I also describe the development and characterization of an efficient high power Er:YAG laser that is resonantly pumped using CW laser diodes at 1470 nm. For CW lasing, it emits 6.1 W at 1645 nm with a slope efficiency of 40%, the highest efficiency reported for an Er:YAG laser that is pumped in this manner. In
Q-switched operation, the laser produces diffraction-limited pulses with an average power of 2.5 W at 2 kHz PRF, and thus is suitable as the slave oscillator of a CLR. To our knowledge this is the first
Q-switched Er:YAG laser resonantly pumped by CW laser diodes. This thesis also presents an experimental investigation of the observed reduction in the average output power of
Q-switched Er:YAG lasers at low PRF. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of a theoretical model developed using rate equations so the primary causes can be determined, and thus could be minimized in a future design.

Since its creation in 1960, laser has become a really useful tool. Lasers are very versatile and they has become part of many of our everyday life tools. Coming in their pulsed form, lasers have opened-up others fields of application such as machining, cutting, marking or cleaning materials; or medicine and well-being and also sensors and in particular embedded sensors. Passively Q-Switched lasers are particularly adapted to this last field of application thanks to their energetic self-sufficiency, using the energy of the laser itself to create very energetic laser pulses whose duration order is about the nanosecond. The lasers made on optical glass wafers have also proved very suitable for the manufacture of on-board sensing devices: they show great stability, strong mechanical and chemical resistance, making them…

Various optical sensors, such as LIDARs, need laser sources both powerful and narrow-linewidth. In this context, the aim of this project is the realization of integrated pulsed laser sources with a Fourier Transform Limited (FTL) spectrum. To do so, we propose a passively Q-switched DFB laser structure. Ion-exchange technology is used to realize amplifier waveguides on Ytterbium-doped phosphate glass. The DFB cavity is made by dry etching of a Bragg grating on the waveguides surface. The Q-Switched behavior is obtained by depositing a BDN-doped cellulose acetate coating layer, acting as a saturable absorber. This structure allowed us obtaining FTL single-frequency pulsed lasers. When studying the impact of BDN concentration, we observe pulses ranging from 2,5 ns with 40 W peak power, to 100 ns with 14 W peak power. Thus, our device FWHM linewidth goes down to 9 MHz. These results pave the way for the realisation of compact laser sources for embedded lidar systems.

▼ This thesis discusses creating of software for the LIBS spectroscopy method (for an electronic chamber). In the first part the reader will learn about the LIBS method and about a short description of a workplace, where the project is being created. Then I write about an application design for laboratories, which are going to use this method. Next I describe an implementation of software, where the reader can find some details about used algorithms for autofocus (an evaluation of image sharpness and an iterative determination of the position of the camera). The end of this work is focused on the assessment of GUI and testing the application.

This work presents the development of oscillators and ampli?ers build around new ytterbium rod type ?ber. These ?ber systems generate high average power generation. The oscillator makes it possible to deliver well linearly polarized, almost TEM 00 mode, and millijoule-level nanosecond pulses at a tunable repetition rate (10-100 kHz). The spectral bandwidth was shown to be less than 0.1 nm. To achieve higher peak power and shorter pulses, two types of ampli?ers have been developed and characterized. The experimental results we obtain, do well agree with the numerical simulations we developped. The ?rst system ampli?es in a rod type ?ber the nanosecond pulses yielded by a microlaser working at 1064 nm wavelength injected . Its provides pulses with a high peak power system (500 kW). Its repetition rate was tuned from 1 kHz to 30 kHz. The second ampli?er was built using a Q-switched ytterbium doped ?ber oscillator injected in a second ?ber which acts as ampli?er. In this original system the two cavities are coupled. It delivers two nanosecond pulses that are coherent, polarized, almost TEM00 single mode beams and that can have independently tunable pulse energies. We have shown that these oscillators and ampli?ers can be easily doubled and tripled in fre- quency. Very high ef?ciency of about 64 % and 38 % have been achieved respectively at 2? and 3?. These outputs have…

Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) is a solid-state spectroscopic technique which doesn't require a static magnetic field in contrast to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). It is used to detect molecules containing quadrupole nuclei (such as nitrogen-14). Nitrogen-14 quadrupole resonance is of particular interest because it is useful in the detection of drugs and explosives, which contain mostly of nitrogen molecules. In this thesis we have primarily focused on improving the spectral quality in nitrogen-14 quadrupole resonance (NQR) . Thus, we were concerned with the transient signals ( ringing ) following the radiofrequency (rf) pulse and which partly overwhelm the NQR signal. First, we demonstrated by theoretical and experimental study that low power measurements (< 3Watts ) were possible, allowing us to reduce the ringing amplitude. ▼ Optical vortex (OV) is a special type of laser beam, which carries well defined orbital angular momentum. Due to the phase singularity, OV has a vanishing intensity at the center of the. The unique property of OV beams has attracted many interests in application but high quality OV beam are rare specifically in pulsed operation. We proposed to generate
Q-switched (QS) OV beam using a degenerate resonator with an intra-cavity spiral phase plate (SPP). and experimentally demonstrated the generated
Q-switched pulse of OV beam carrying a topological charge +1 at a wavelength of 1064nm.
For passive QS laser, we use Cr:YAG crystal as a saturable absorber and produce OV pulse when the pumping power is above a threshold value of 3500mW. The pumping power between 4180mW ~ 5860mW, the OV pulse has a pulse energy of 23.3 ~ 26.1μJ , pulse duration of 85~57ns and average power of 121~274mW. On the other hand, an active QS laser built with acoustic-optic modulator (AOM) produces OV pulse when the pumping power is above a threshold value of 3030mW. Below a pumping power of 5040mW, the OV pulse has pulse duration of 400~600ns and average power of 5~150mW. This is for the first time QS OV beam was generated in a degenerate resonator with an intra-cavity SPP.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to develop a high power, compact all solid-state blue laser, which is applicable in micro machining, LIDA, underwater ranging, biochemical techniques and so forth. The passive
Q-switching technique, which is known to be a low-cost and simple method to raise the laser peak power was employed in this thesis. In the mean time, the intracavity-doubling technique was integrated to achieve the non-linear frequency conversion for generating blue laser at low cost.
Based on our research finding, the reabsorption loss due to thermal effect and a paucity of suppression at wavelength of 1064 nm on laser mirrors could cause the four-level oscillation at 1064 nm instead of three-level oscillation at 914nm. Improvement in heat dissipating system, and suppression at wavelength of 1064 nm on mirror coating has led to a success in developing a quasi-three-level blue laser with peak power of 114W at wavelength 473 nm.
A modified rate equation model of the quasi-three level passively
Q-switched blue lasers was developed as well, in which the influence of the re-absorption loss in the gain medium and its intracavity frequency doubling were both considered. The influence of reabsorption loss upon the laser power deduction was studied by numerical simulation in order to optimize the laser performance.

Supercontinuum sources made possible major break through in spectroscopy metrology and biology like the development of optical coherent tomography. Photonics crystal fiber have been useful for supercontinuum generation allowing the use of relatively low peak power pulsed laser sources. Regarding this kind of devices, pulsed lasers made by integrated optics on glass seemed to be a good candidate. The aims of this work were hence to develop and realize Q-switched lasers for photonic crystal fiber pumping. We demonstrated the possibility to realize a supercontinuum source pumped by an integrated Q-switched laser made by ion exchange on Neodymium doped glass. The Fabry-Perot cavity used is closed by a dielectric mirror on one hand and by the waveguide facet on the other side allowing direct coupling with optical fiber. The saturable absorber has been hybridized on the amplifying waveguide to interact with the evanescent wave. (2.8 ± 0.6) kW peak-power pulses have been generated, which coupled in a photonic crystal fiber, generated a 440 nm to 1600 nm large supercontinuum. As a…

This work describes three original laser sources developed specifically for Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and wire marking. The main goal of the work on the LIBS was to propose new solutions to make portable LIBS as efficient as laboratory LIBS and to evaluate their potential in geological applications. New spectrometers (based on SWIFTS technology) and compact lasers were evaluated and they led to the realization of a portable LIBS gun. The two types of analyze possible which are in situ analysis and chemical cartography of the sample surface led to design two specific lasers: a first compact source emitting at 532 nm with a high beam quality allowing a high spatial resolution and a second one with a lower beam quality but much more robust. The laser developed for marking is a Q-switched Nd:YVO4 emitting in the UV at 355 nm. The original architecture used, the “Cavity-Dumped”, make the pulse duration constant (2 ns) with any repetition rate so that the peak power is high even if the repetition rate is important. The very good beam quality observed makes the laser spot very small so that the marking is very precise and contrasted.

Among the several applications of laser sources, some requires kilometers range propagation in the atmosphere : telemetry, guidance system or active imagery. High pulse energy improves the range of the system, but may cause permanent blindness to an observer's eyes. Hence, these applications must use laser beam which wavelength are located in the eye-safe region, ideally at the local minimum of the atmosphere absorption (1550-1650 nm). Such laser sources are already commercially available, but are not suited for the demanding military needs : compacity, electrical consumption, performance and large operating temperature range (-40°C/+60°C).My work aims to develop a laser source filling these specifications. Thanks to the collaboration with the industrial partners Fibercryst and Cilas, it focuses on the design of a compact, efficient, directly diode-pumped Er3+:YAG single cristal fiber laser for military applications. With a homemade numerical simulation of a passively Q-switched Er3+:YAG laser source, many laser emitters are experimentally designed and compared. Further studies around saturable absorbers allowed sensible improvements of the output pulse energy. This work, whose results may already be commercially interesting, may lead to new technics and architectures of erbium doped solid-state laser for better prototypes.

▼ There are nowadays strong business and technical demands to integrate radio- frequency (RF) receivers (RX) into a complete system-on-chip (SoC) realized in scaled digital processes technology. As a consequence, the RF circuitry has to function well in face of reduced power supply ( V DD ) while the CMOS device threshold voltage ( V th ) stays almost constant. Therefore, a conventional or continuous-time (CT) approach could not be efficiently utilized to design and implement the SoC, whereas a discrete-time (DT) approach offers the advantage for RF building blocks to operate properly in a smaller headroom. Furthermore, in finer CMOS technologies, transit frequency ( f T ) increases while CT RF building blocks do not benefit except for low-noise amplifiers (LNA). However, the performance of DT RF building blocks improves because of the higher sampling frequency ( f s ), lower power supply, and sharper clock edges provided by technology scaling. Nowadays, most integrated RF receivers are zero-IF (ZIF) because of well- known advantages such as less complicated architecture and easy channel-selection integration. They require many external duplexers, surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters, and switches, typically one per band, to attenuate out-of-band (OB) blockers. However, there are many issues associated with ZIF receivers such as time-variant DC offsets, sensitivity to 1 /f (flicker) noise, large in-band LO leakage, and second- order nonlinearity. For solving those issues, high-performance cellular SAW-less ZIF receivers now require extensive calibration efforts. For example, an intensive input 2 nd -order intercept point (IIP2) calibration must be simultaneously operated in the background with DC offset and harmonic rejection (HR) calibrations. Also, this calibration is susceptible to many factors such as variations in power supply, process corner, temperature, RF blocker frequency, local oscillator (LO) frequency, LO power, and channel frequency. On the other hand, a superheterodyne architecture pushes the IF frequency much higher so that the aforementioned problems are eliminated. Despite the advantages, the superheterodyne radios have not been utilized in cellular receivers simply because of the difficulty with integration of a high quality (
Q)-factor band-pass filter (BPF) for image rejection in CMOS using CT circuitry. In this thesis, a new class of filters, i.e., charge-sharing (CS), is discussed that is being invented and developed to be utilized in not only superheterodyne but also in ZIF receivers. The proposed filter not only filters OB-blockers but also rejects interferers at the harmonic of LO frequency which is an extraordinary advantage especially for SAW-less receivers when there is no external filtering prior to the receiver input. Using these techniques, for the first-time ever, the superheterodyne receiver is proposed that meets the specification for SAW-less receivers. Chapter 1 briefly provides an overview of the blocks inside conventional RF radio transceivers. It mentions that there is a tendency…

▼ Due to the severe cost pressure of consumer electronics, a migration to an advanced nanoscale CMOS processes, which is primarily developed for fast and low-power digital circuits operating at low supply voltages, is necessary, but it forces wireless RF transceivers to exploit more and more digital circuitry. These basic CMOS properties tend to coerce the design of wireless functions towards the digital domain where transistors are utilized as switches rather than current sources. Within the past decade, there have been tremendous efforts towards implementing fully-digital or digitally-intensive RF transmitters in which they demonstrate transmitter designs that operate from baseband up to the pre-power amplifier (PA) stage entirely in the digital domain. In view of this digitalization, the RF transmitter modulator, being the nearest to the antenna as it converts digital baseband modulation samples into an RF waveform, is considered the most critical building block of the transmitter, and it can be in the form of either a polar, Cartesian (I/
Q), or an outphasing topology. For wide modulation bandwidths, due to their direct linear summation of the in-phase (I) and quadrature-phase (
Q) signals and thus the avoidance of the bandwidth expansion, Cartesian modulators are substantiated as the most appropriate choice over their polar or outphasing counterparts. Since the effective modulating sample resolution is the utmost important parameter as it directly impacts the achievable dynamic range, linearity, error vector magnitude (EVM), noise floor, and out-of-band spectral emission, this thesis proposes a wideband, high-resolution, all-digital orthogonal I/
Q radio-frequency digital-to-analog (RF-DAC). Chapter 1 briefly provides an overview of the conventional RF radio building blocks. It is discussed that contemporary RF transceivers must support most of multi-mode/multiband communication standards such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Fourth Generation (4G) of 3GPP cellular. In Chapter 2, four types of RF transmitter architectures have been briefly described. The analog I/
Q modulators are the most straightforward and widely employed RF transmitters. They are later replaced by analog polar counterparts to address their poor power efficiency and noise performance. On the other hand, in the analog polar RF transmitters, their related amplitude and phase signals must be aligned or spectral regrowth is inevitable. Utilizing digitally intensive polar RF transmitters mitigates the latter alignment issue. Nonetheless, polar transmitters suffer from an additional issue that is related to their nonlinear conversion of in-phase and quadrature-phase signals into the amplitude and phase representation. Therefore, the polar RF transmitters are not able to manage very large baseband bandwidth of the most stringent communication standards, therefore, reusing I/
Q modulators based on digitally intensive implementation appears to be a reasonable approach to resolve this issue. The digital I/
Q RF transmitters, however, suffer again from inadequate power…

▼ Back-scatter absorption gas imaging (BAGI) is a powerful laser-based detection technique whereby the strong spectroscopic absorption features in the gaseous species of interest are exploited in order to provide an image of the otherwise invisible (to the naked eye) gas. Such a device had been under development at the University of St. Andrews for the past three years. This thesis is concerned with the work carried out in the design, construction and testing of an electronic supervisory system for such a device to both control the electro-mechanical image acquisition hardware and display the image data upon an LCD module via an on-board video driver. Two different LCD display technologies, super twisted nematic (STN) and thin film transistor (TFT), have been demonstrated and their suitability for use in this system is assessed. It was found that the refresh rate and contrast ratio of the TFT display was greatly superior to that of the STN. Frame rates in excess of 10 fps have been demonstrated with this module. In addition to the scanner, a laser management system (LMS) was designed, constructed and tested to control the laser illumination system, which is based on an intracavity optical parametric oscillator (ICOPO). This involved the development of a dual-channel PID temperature controller to stabilise various optical components located within the ICOPO illumination source, a digitally-controlled constant current source to drive the pump diode laser and a digitally controlled system for an associated
Q-
switch driver module. The LMS was developed as part of the miniaturisation process and resulted in one dedicated instrument replacing six individual devices required in the laboratory demonstrator. The BAGI device has now been commercialised with elements of this research program being part of the overall instrument.
