Our objective was to examine the antifungal and antibacterial activities of several types of propolis, including Africanized honey bee green propolis and propolis produced by meliponini bees. The minimal inhibitory concentration, considered to be the lowest concentration of an inhibitory agent in which there is no macroscopic growth of the microorganism, was determined for all the propolis samples. CLAE methodology was used for the analysis of the chemical profiles of the samples, in order to determine the classes of substances in the propolis samples. Propolis from the bees Tetragonisca angustula, Plebeia droryana, Scaptotrigona bipunctata, Friesiomelita varia and Nannotrigona testaceicornis presented no antifungal or antibacterial activity. None of the propolis samples presented antifungal activity against Aspergillus nidulans. The fungus Trichophyton rubrum was sensitive to several types of propolis, green propolis being the most efficient against this species. Various types of propolis also presented antibacterial activity, demonstrating the potential importance of these resins for human and veterinary medicine.

▼ Propolis is a traditional value-added product from beekeeping, and has been widely used in medicine and the chemical industry because of its extensive biological activities. In this dissertation some pharmacological properties of propolis extracted by ethanol (EEP) and water (WSP) were studied by means of modem pharmacological methods. The results of the experiments show the following: 1. Both EEP and WSD led to decreased levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycosylated haemoglobin (HBA1c), Fructosamine (FRU), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid (UA), malonaldehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), nitric oxide synthetase (NOS), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and very-low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) in the serum of fasting rats; and, to increased serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in rats with diabetes mellitus. This suggests that propolis can control blood glucose and modulate the metabolism of glucose, blood lipid and protein, leading to decreased outputs of lipid peroxidation and scavenging free radicals in rats with diabetes mellitus. 2. Both EEP and WSD showed inhibitory effects on swelling induced by Freund's complete adjuvant and decreased the degree of local inflammatory responses; significantly inhibited the increase of interleukin-6 (lL-6) in inflamed tissues, but had no significant effect on levels of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-y (IFN-y). The results are consistent with the interpretation that EEP and WSD may exert these effects by inhibiting the activation and differentiation of mononuclear macrophages. 3. Both EEP and WSD exhibited significant anti-inflammatory effects in animal models with respect to thoracic capillary vessel leakage in mice, Carrageenan-induced oedema, Carrageen-aninduced pleurisy and acute lung damage in rats. The mechanisms for the anti-inflammatory effects probably involve decreasing prostaglandin and NO levels. 4. Both EEP and WSD had an inhibitory effect on the level of TG, TC, LDL-C, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) in serum, and TC, TG and MDA in liver of hyperlipidemic SD rats; but were without effects on HDL-C, MDA, SOD and NO in serum. EEP also reduced body weight, liver weight and liver index, but WSD did not reduce those indexes. The results showed that the two extracts contribute to the improvement of lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic rats and provide them with the required anti-oxidative activity. 5. The 80% ethanol extracts of propolis had the highest flavonoid content. The flavone content of water extracts of propolis were obtained with a natural surface-active agent, under ultrasonic perturbation at 80°C, for 12 h and was 6.7 times greater than that of propolis extracted with water at room temperature. Compared to EEP, WSD has the same or a greater anti-tumor or anti-inflammation effect at the same dosage, and shows considerable pharmacological potential especially because of its low side…

▼ This study was conducted to investigate a method for stimulating increased propolis production in Cape honeybee hives. The study took place near George situated in the Southern Cape region of South Africa. Standard Langstroth hives were used (n = 12) containing honeybee colonies of equal strength from the species Apis mellifera capensis. Propolis production in colonies equipped with commercial propolis traps (n = 6) was compared to propolis production in control colonies (n = 6). The strength of the colonies was determined by calculating the area of worker brood cells and the number of frames containing bees. For a ninemonth period propolis production, honey production, brood area, resin percentage, frames containing bees and income generated were measured on a monthly basis with the removal of the traps. There were no significant difference (p > 0.5) in honey production (24.66 ± 1.19 kg and 26.53 ± 1.31 kg), worker brood area (1967.3 ± 258.61 cm2 and 1085.4 ± 312.99 cm2) and frames containing bees (10 ± 1.13 frames and 9.8 ± 1.2 frames) between the hives with traps and hives without traps. However, propolis production was significantly influenced (p < 0.01) by the propolis traps, with the hives containing traps producing 361.87 ± 8.78g propolis compared to 38.2 ± 2.17g propolis in the control group. Propolis production in both control (28 g) and treatment groups (260.2 g) was significantly influenced by honey flow (p = 0.027). From December to March the production of honey was 22.12 (control) and 24.25 kg (treatment). A positive correlation was also found between frames containing bees and worker brood area (R = 0.73). Hives containing propolis traps were more profitable than the control group when honey and propolis income were pooled (467.17 ± 19.47 Rand vs. 353.8 ± 17.03 Rand). Therefore, the increased propolis production significantly improved profitability of the hive without affecting overall hive productivity.

▼ Background: Antimicrobial resistance has reached a global dimension and threatens the health
and the economy of many nations including developing countries like Ghana. This realization led several researchers to anticipate the forthcoming “end of the antibiotic era”. Studies have shown
that medicinal plants and their derivatives still play an important role to cover the basic health
needs in resource poor settings. One of such natural products endowed with bioactive compounds
used in traditional medicine to treat diseases is propolis.
Aim: This study aimed at evaluating the antimicrobial activity of crude propolis extracts from
different regions in Ghana against selected multidrug resistant clinical bacterial isolates.
Methodology: About 100 g of propolis samples were collected from each selected commercial
beekeepers across the (10) ten regions in Ghana. Samples were collected between December 2015
and March 2016. Crude propolis extracts were prepared using petroleum ether (PET), chloroform
(CH) and ethyl acetate (EA). Extracts were evaporated using rotary evaporator and dried in a
dessicator. A concentration of 64 mg/ml of each crude extract was dissolved in 5% dimethyl
sulfoxide (DMSO). Clinical isolates including drug resistant S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and
their control strains MRSA NCTC 25923, P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and E. coli NCTC 13351
were used in the study. Screening for antimicrobial activity of the propolis extracts were carried
out using agar well diffusion method. Active crude propolis extracts were fractionated using
chloroform (CH), ethyl acetate (EA) and petroleum ether (PET). The active fractions, chloroform
fraction of Northern (CHNR), chloroform fraction of Eastern (CHER), Ethyl acetate fraction of
Ashanti (EAAS), ethyl acetate of Volta (EAVT) and ethyl acetate fraction of Northern region (EANR)
were also tested. The minimum inhibitory (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration
(MBC) of the active fractions were determined using the broth macro dilution method. Screening
for phytochemicals was done using standard procedures and HPLC was used to analyze the active
fractions.
Results: Varying degrees of antimicrobial susceptibility pattern were observed from the screening
for antimicrobial activities of propolis collected from the ten (10) region in Ghana. Pseudomonas
aeruginosa isolated from clinical samples and its control strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC
27853 were more susceptible to Northern (NR), Eastern (ER), Ashanti (AS) and Volta region (VT)
crude propolis extract. The average zone of inhibition ranges from 10 to 13mm for Pseudomonas
aeruginosa (clinical) and 20 to 31mm for Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. S. aureus
(clinical) and its control strain, MRSA ATCC 25923 were also found to be susceptible to NR, ER,
AS and VT region propolis extracts with average zone of inhibition ranging from 19 to 24mm and
20 to 25mm respectively.
Among the twelve propolis fractions tested, CHNR, CHER, EAER, EAVT and EAAS were identified
as the active…

It is estimated that the United States annually spend around 100 million dollars annually to treat and rehabilitate patients with spinal diseases. Approximately 15% of patients who are operated on the spine, does not obtain clinical improvement and will require other surgical procedures. Among the main causes of failure in surgical procedures of spinal epidural fibrosis is also called the epidural and the use of an inhibitor material of fibrosis in this type of surgery, has been researched, but so far there is no commercial product, nationally produced, for the prevention of fibrosis. The objective of this work was the development and characterization and chemical-physical microbiological analysis of a hydrogel made of NaCMC and propolis. Gels were prepared in four NaCMC and propolis (1%, 2% and 8% and the absence of propolis) and characterized by infrared vibrational spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and also microbiological testing. The vibrational spectroscopy identify the characteristic of propolis connection with carboxymethylcellulose. The structure microscopic remained unchanged, even at a concentration of 8% propolis. The NaCMC gel 8% propolis have demonstrated excellent antimicrobial activity compared to other gels and opens new possibilities for future work in vivo that might provide information on the effectiveness nonstick and its possible application to neurosurgical procedures.

The genus Acanthamoeba comprises protozoa belonging to the group of free-living amoebas and it is widely scattered in nature. These protozoa are known to cause two serious diseases, Granulomatous Amebic Encephalitis in immunocompromised patients and amebic keratitis, especially in immunocompetent contact lens wearers. Green Propolis is a resinous and balsamic substance, known in alternative medicine because of its several biological activities. In this study we evaluated the amoebicide activity of an aqueous extract of propolis against trophozoites and cysts of A. castellanii. At concentrations of 10 and 20 mg/mL, the extract was able to inactivate 100% of trophozoites within 24 and 48 hours. The dose of 5 mg/mL inactivated 100% of trophozoites within 72 hours. The cysts were inactivated at a concentration of 40 mg/mL after 24 hours of exposure to the extract. The cytotoxic effect of the extract was evaluated on VERO and HCE cells by MTT assay. The extract had no significant cytotoxic effect at concentrations of 0.312, 0.625, 1.25 and 2.5 mg/ml about HCE cells and at concentrations of 2.5 and 5 on VERO cells. The adhesion test performed showed that the attachment of Acanthamoeba to HCE cells have dose-dependent behavior in relation to the propolis extract. Thus, this study demonstrated the antiparasitic activity of propolis against both forms of…

propolis. Kontrol grubundaki gebe sıçanlara gebelik süresince 0.15 ml DMSO, busulfan grubundaki gebe sıçanlara gebeliğin 15. gününde 10mg/kg busulfan,
propolis grubundaki gebe sıçanlara gebelik süresince her gün 50mg/kg
propolis, busulfan+
propolis grubunu oluşturan gebe sıçanlara gebelik süresince her gün 50mg/kg

▼ Abstract: The denture-mucosa interface is the ideal way to form biofilm and this process is favored by the decrease in salivary flow, irregularities on the surface of the material and oral temperature. The microorganisms in the biofilm act as a source of infection and, in special situations, may be aspirated causing major systemic diseases. Candida spp is the most found yeast in full dentures, being related to the development of several oral lesions. The most popular method to remove biofilm from the denture is brushing with dentrifice. Brasiliensis
propolis gel has become an indication for the control of microrganisms in the oral cavity. Faced with the need to control the colonization by Candida spp, and as an alternative to the use of conventional antifungal medications in elderly patients with full dentures, we believe it is appropriate to study the effect of this gel in the colonization of the full dentures of these patients. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of using brasiliensis
propolis based dentrifice, compared to other cleaning techniques, as the presence of Candida spp in the saliva total of elderly patients with prosthesis We selected 36 patients, sorted randomly and distributed in three experimental groups: G1 (CONV Group) ¿ The patients were instructed to perform mechanical cleaning of the upper total denture with a toothbrush of medium-size head and soft bristles and dentrifice without abrasives, 3 times a day; G2 (PROP Group) - The patients were instructed to perform mechanical cleaning of the total denture, with a toothbrush of medium-size head and soft bristles and Proporalcare®
propolis based dentrifice (Pharma Nectar, Belo Horizonte-MG, Brazil), 3 times a day; G3 (COTA Group) - patients were instructed to perform the cleaning of the total denture with a toothbrush of medium-size head and soft bristles and conventional dentrifice, 3 times a day, and immerse them in solution with effervescent tablets (Corega Tabs®), in a standardized plastic container provided by the researchers. Samples of unstimulated saliva were collected in T0 (0 days, initial consultation); T1 (30-day follow-up) and T2 (60-day follow-up), directly in sterile bottles. 10mL aliquots of pure saliva samples were seeded on Sabouraud-dextrose-Agar plates. The recognition of the colonies was performed considering the morphological characteristics of Candida albicans. The results were submitted to the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and Friedman nonparametric test for paired samples, considering p< 0.05. After statistical analysis it was possible to observe that the mechanical brushing using conventional dentrifice or
propolis based showed similar results in the evaluated times, while the use of effervescent tablets resulted in fewer Candida spp colonies after 60 days. We conclude that the use of brasiliensis
propolis based dentrifice showed similar results using conventional dentrifice and inferior results to the ones with combined use of conventional toothpaste and effervescent tablets

Propolis is known for its bioactive properties, however, it presents sensory characteristics that limit its direct incorporation in food products.
In this study, the potential of the microencapsulation of propolis was studied, in order to mask its unpleasant flavor, while maintaining its bioactive properties such as the antioxidant activity. The encapsulation process was carried by spray-drying using different materials: chitosan, chitosan with citric acid, chitosan with tripolyphosphate, rice starch and rice starch with gelatin. In terms of total phenolic compounds, the loading of the particles ranged between 0.049 and 0.062 mg EAG/mg particles, being a higher concentration when compared to the propolis itself (0.023 mg EAG/mg propolis). The release profile of propolis from the particles was studied by monitoring the concentration of total phenolics in acidic and neutral media. The percentage of total phenolics released in neutral solution was approximately 100% for all particles. In acid medium, the particles presenting a lower release of phenolics were chitosan with tripolyphosphate (27%), followed by chitosan with citric acid (39 %), rice starch with gelatin (46%), rice starch (52%) and chitosan (100%). The observed different release profiles allow us to infer that it is possible to design suitable particles for diverse end-use applications

▼ Abstract: Radiotherapy is widely used to treat malignant tumors in the head and neck region and is related to several acute and chronic oral toxicities. Oral mucositis is one of the most significant toxicity of the therapy, in addition to dysphagia, dysgeusia, dry mouth, and opportunistic infections. Recently described, Brazilian organic
propolis has shown important antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal activity. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the topical use of Brazilian organic
propolis in the prevention and treatment of radio-induced oral mucositis. Secondary objectives included investigating the possible beneficial effects of Brazilian organic
propolis in preventing dysgeusia, dysphagia, pain, and oral candidiasis. This study consisted of a prospective, randomized, double-blind clinical trial. Sixty patients diagnosed with cancer in the oral cavity and oropharynx and submitted to radiotherapy protocols were selected and randomized to use either topical oral suspension based on Brazilian organic
propolis of subtypes 4 and 6 or placebo. Patients enrolled in the research protocol were evaluated through weekly intraoral clinical examination. Oral mucositis, dysphagia, and dysgeusia were assessed according to the World Health Organization and National Cancer Institute scales. Pain was also assessed according to a Visual Analog Scale and the presence or absence of oral candidiasis was checked throughout intraoral examination. The results showed that patients who used
propolis topically had a lower mean score for oral mucositis during the fourth week of treatment compared to participants in the placebo group, although it was not possible to prevent the development of oral mucositis grade II. Patients who used
propolis also had lower mean scores for dysgeusia and dysphagia throughout the treatment. In addition, fewer patients in the
propolis group developed oral candidiasis compared to the placebo group, and among those who presented oral candidiasis, patients in the placebo group developed more episodes when compared to patients who used
propolis. Thus, this study suggests that Brazilian organic
propolis is an alternative therapeutic option in the management of acute oral toxicities in patients undergoing radiotherapy in the head and neck region

▼ Introduction: Propolis, a sticky substance produced by bees from plant resins, has a long history of safe use medicinally. Kangaroo Island, SA (KI) lacks many introduced European plants bees preferentially collect resin from; consequentially, propolis from KI is produced from resinous native plants. Several identifiably reproducible pure-source KI propolis types exist. Research into medical use of compounds from KI native plants is limited. Metabolomics is a growing field of interest in natural products chemistry, including beehive products. Metabolomic and similarity-scoring assessment of KI propolis, through statistical evaluation of 1D 1H-NMR fingerprints, provides an entry point for research into medical use of KI native plant compounds. Many avenues to product discovery in pharmaceutical chemistry are suffering diminishing returns: metabolomics-guided natural products assessment has the potential for further identification of novel therapeutic compounds from resinous plants. Aim: To assess and identify, via metabolomic investigation of NMR fingerprints, major propolis types on KI, and to produce, from this, similarity-scoring tools for assessment of propolis samples. Method: KI propolis samples, identified as pure-source by TLC, and resinous KI plants were analysed by 1H-NMR and HPLC. Data points of interest were normalised and binned to form individual sample ‘fingerprints’. Data from these fingerprints were analysed by hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis (PCA) to confirm provisionally-identified pure-source propolis types and identify subtypes within propolis and resinous plant species. From this, calculator tools were created to score similarity (out of 1000) of 1H-NMR fingerprints to the average spectrum of pure-source propolis types, as well as to calculated mixtures of these average spectra. Assessment of the chemistry of two major KI propolis types identified (CP- and F-type) was made by fractionation and NMR, with one compound, 6,8-diprenyleriodictyol, isolated from CP-type propolis in quantity, submitted for epigenetic and other biological assays. Results: Source resinous plants were demonstrated, through hierarchical clustering and PCA, to cluster with propolis types arising from these sources, with closely related plants and sub-chemotypes clustering separately, confirming specificity. A number of previously-identified pure-source propolis types and known botanical sources were shown to have very high similarity (> 800/1000) to the expected propolis type. Calculator tools were observed to accurately predict the content of mixed propolis samples to within ± 10%. A number of methylflavanones, and two novel terminally-hydroxylated prenyldihydrochalcones were isolated from F-type propolis. 6,8-diprenyleriodictyol demonstrated a range of promising activity in biological assays. Conclusion: Metabolomic evaluation of 1H-NMR fingerprints can reliably identify and assess pure-source KI propolis and identify botanical origin of source resins. Similarity scoring calculators can accurately…

▼ Kangaroo Island, South Australia, is known for its unique flora and its rich supply of honey bee propolis. Propolis, the resinous bee hive product, has largely been used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, due to its interesting biologically active constituents and traditionally recognized medicinal properties. In this study, a propolis type was selected from more than a thousand propolis samples collected from various locations of Kangaroo Island that had been analyzed and categorized through chromatographic and NMR techniques. From the propolis type categorized as “purple spot”, serrulatane diterpenoids were isolated which led to identification of the plant source as Myoporum insulare R. Br. Several compounds were isolated and their structures were elucidated by NMR and high resolution ESI mass spectroscopy techniques. Serrulatane diterpenes characterized include 2 novel (7,8,18-trihydroxyserrulat-14-ene, 5,18-epoxy-8-hydroxyserrulat-14-ene) and 3 known (5,18-epoxyserrulat-14-en-8,18-diol, 7,8-dihydroxyserrulat-14-ene, serrulat-14-en-5,8-dione) compounds, acetylated derivatives of the 2 major serrulatane diterpenes and an oxidized product from the main novel serrulatane diterpene. Other known compounds characterized were a sesquiterpene, 4-hydroxy-10,11-didehydro-4,8-dihydromyodesmone, and a flavonoid, 4΄,7-dimethoxy-5-hydroxyflavonone. In-vitro pharmacological assays plus epigenetic enzymes inhibition and cell based assays and also cell viability proliferation screens of four of the studied compounds and Myoporum insulare resin were done. The promising results exhibited antihistamine, anti-lipoxygenase, anti-monoamine oxidase properties. Significant inhibition of nuclear factor kappaB was noticed for compound (1) (IC50 ≈ 1.36 μM). Based on our research, Kangaroo Island’s unique propolis and intact botanical flora have exceptional chemical structure diversity with promising biological and pharmacological properties much of which is yet to be discovered.

▼ Produced by bees,
propolis has attracted substantial scientific interest and consumer demand as a “superfood”. Long used in folk medicine,
propolis is known for its purported health promoting properties and pleasant aroma.
Propolis is consumed as a dietary supplement; it is also a raw material in chewing gums, confections, and honey, and a preservative added directly to food or integrated into packaging. Although
propolis volatiles have been studied for many years, little is yet known about the key aroma-active compounds responsible for its pleasant characteristic aroma. Research has shown that
propolis volatiles vary with geographic location, time of collection, and plant source. However, no research has documented variability in the aroma active compounds of
propolis from the same bee hive over consecutive years or investigated which compounds are key odorants with greatest influence on the unique aroma of
propolis. This research, therefore, aimed to identify key aroma active compounds in
propolis and to gain insight into its seasonal variability. Aromas were isolated gently by solvent assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) and volatile components were separated by on-column gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in addition to purge and trap thermal desorption (P&T-TD-GC-MS). Although hundreds of volatiles were present and identified in the samples, gas chromatography olfactometry (GC-O) demonstrated that only 47 were aroma active. Application of comparative aroma extract dilution analysis (cAEDA) identified α-pinene (pine-like), 1,8-cineole (eucalyptus-like), (E)-2-nonenal (green), (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal (cucumber-like), (E)-β-damascenone (cooked apple), 2-methoxyphenol (smoky), phenylethyl alcohol (floral, rose), β-ionone (floral, berry), eugenol (clove-like), (E)-ethyl cinnamate (cinnamon-like), 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol (clove-like), and 3-phenylpropanoic acid (floral) as the most aroma-active compounds. Concentrations of individual components varied with season, but overall distribution of odorants was remarkably consistent over three years. These results provide considerable insight into aroma compounds that contribute to
propolis aroma and into seasonal changes in composition of those compounds. This knowledge should contribute significantly to applications of
propolis to dietary, pharmaceutical, flavor and fragrance industries, and also set the stage for future research on the key aroma active compounds of
propolis collected from different geographical locations as well as the development of aroma standardization and quality control methods.

(ypač nuo XX a. 7 dešimtmečio). Viena iš svarbiausių propolio
savybių yra stiprus antioksidacinis aktyvumas. Tyrimo tikslas -
nustatyti bei palyginti pagrindinių veikliųjų medžiagų kiekius
propolio etanoliniuose ekstraktuose, įvertinti jų antioksidacinį
aktyvumą. Pritaikius maceracijos metodą, buvo pagaminti skystieji
propolio etanoliniai ekstraktai (etanolis 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% ir 96%
koncentracijos). Buvo įvertinta ekstraktų kokybė gravimetriniu,
spektrofotometriniu bei efektyviosios skysčių chromatografijos su
diodų matricos ir masių spektrometrijos detektoriais (ESCh-DAD-MS)
metodais.

Propolis (bee glue) is a resinous material
that honeybees collect from poplar, birch or other plants (the
plant source depends on the geographic origin of propolis). Because
of its popularity in folk medicine, propolis has become the subject
of intense pharmacological and chemical studies for the last 30
years. Numerous studies have proven its versatile pharmacological
activities. One of the most important is its antioxidant activity.
The objective of this study was to identify and compare the main
active substances in the ethanolic extracts of propolis and to
evaluate their antioxidant activity. The classical maceration
method was used for the production of liquid ethanolic extracts of
propolis (the concentration of used ethanol: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% and
96%). The quality of popolis was evaluated by gravimetric,
spectrophotometric and High Performance Liquid Chromatography with
Diode Array and Mass Spectrometric detectors (HPLC-DAD-MS) methods.
The results of the HPLC-DAD-MS analysis showed that one of the main
phenolic acids in the ethanolic extracts of propolis is ferulic
acid. That was the reason for using it as a standard in the
spectrometric analysis of total phenolic compounds.
Spectrophotometric method showed about 10 times higher results than
the analysis with the standard of pinocembrin and galangin mixture
(2:1). The highest concentrations of phenolic compounds were found
in the extracts made with the ethanol of 70%, 80% and 96%
concentrations. The antioxidant... [to full

In the framework of a CIFRE thesis agreement in collaboration between Pollenergie and the Center for International Cooperation in Agronomic Research for Development (CIRAD), the antifungal potential of propolis has been studied. For this purpose, six samples of propolis from different geographical regions (France and Brazil) and various botanical origins (genus Populus, Dalbergiaecastophyllum and Baccharis dracunculifolia) were analyzed. The Ethanolic Extracts of Propolis (EEP) finalized, rich in polyphenolic compounds (from 12.8 ± 0.4 to 16.2 ± 0.3 g EAG.L-1), exhibit a great diversity of classes of bioactive molecules according to their botanical origin. The polyphenols identified in propolis extracts of Populus (France) are mainlyflavonoids and their derivatives (galangin, pinobanksin, chrysin) and acids-phenols (p-coumaric and caffeic acids). In contrast, the extracts of green propolis of Baccharis dracunculifolia and red from Dalbergia ecastophyllum (Brazil) they are respectively phenol acids and their prenylated derivatives(artepillin C, p-coumaric acid) and isoflavonoid compounds (vestitol, medicarpin). All EEPs have demonstrated an in vitro antifungal…

▼ Iš pirmo žvilgsnio odos terapija atrodo
paprasta, tačiau moksliškai pagrįstas pusiau kietų vaisto formų
vartojamų ant odos modeliavimas yra vienas sudėtingiausių
technologijos aspektų. Gaminant pusiau kietą vaisto formą skirtą
vartoti ant odos, vienas svarbiausių uždavinių yra pagrindo
parinkimas. Remiantis reologiniais (klampos rodiklio) tyrimais,
galima numatyti pusiau kieto preparato stabilumą saugojimo metu.
Įvertinant kremų gamybos sudėtingumą ir ypač tirštųjų ekstraktų
įvedimo į pagrindą problemas, aktualu pagaminti kremo pagrindą iš
tokių komponentų, kad būtų galima išvengti ilgo šildymo proceso.
Darbo tikslas yra propolio emulsinio (vanduo aliejuje) kremo
sudėties parinkimas, įvertinant fizikines-chemines savybes.
Remiantis literatūra ir fizikinių-cheminių savybių tyrimais,
parinkta v/a kremo pagrindo sudėtis (polietileno ir vazelino
aliejaus mišinys, izopropilo palmitato ir poliglicerolio esterio
mišinys, glicerolis ir išgrynintas vanduo) ir pritaikyta
technologija stabilios v/a emulsijos gamybai.
Kremo
pH reikšmė artima odos pH reikšmei. Kremas išlieka stabilus
kambario temperatūroje, yra homogeniškas, pasižymi priimtinomis
juslinėmis savybėmis.
At first sight cutaneous therapeutics seems
simple, but the formulation of semi-solid preparations for
cutaneous application are reasonable scientifically. It‘s one of
the most complicated technological aspects. The choice of basis is
one the most important tasks, produced semi-solid preparations for
cutaneous application. It‘s possible to suppose a stability of
semi-solid preparation during storage time, supported the
rheologicals (value of viscosity) researches. It‘s topical to
produce the basis of the cream from such components, that would be
possible to avoid the long heating process, appreciated a
complication of the manufacture of creams and particularly an
insertion of softs extracts to the basis problems. The aim of the
work is a choice of the composition of propolis emulsion (water in
oil) cream, appreciated the physico-chemical properties. A
composition of basis of w/o cream (mixture of liquid paraffin and
polyethylene, mixture of isopropyl palmitate and polyglycerine
ester, glycerine and water) was selected and the technology for
manufacture of stable w/o emulsion was fitted, supported a
literature and the researches of physico-chemical properties. The
results of the researches showed that the optimal concentration of
soft extracts of propolis, which is possible to insert to the
choiced emulsion basis is 1%. The viscosity varied no more 29%,
compared with the viscosity of other propolis creams. The value of
cream pH is close to a skin pH. The cream remains stable... [to

▼ This diploma thesis deals with encapsulation of natural extracts. In the theoretical part the methods of encapsulation, materials for particle preparation, as well as application of encapsulation techniques in food industry were described. In experimental part selected natural extracts of
propolis, green barley and probiotics were characterized. There substances were encapsulated into alginate and chitosan. In the total of 25 types of prepared particles long-term stability in some model physiological conditions as well as in four different model foods was evaluated. Additionally, stability of selected particles in several real milk-based products was followed too. The stability of particles was determined spectroptohometrically. In natural extract a content of polyphenols, proteins, chlorophylls, as well as total antioxidant activity were analysed. To analysis of probiotics optical and fluorescence microscopy were used. In
propolis and green barley antimicrobial activity was tested too. Moreover, in the sample of
propolis also cytotoxic assay was applied. Agar-chitosan was chosen as the best shell material for
propolis due to its optimal stability in model physiological conditions as well as model foods. Liposomes were evaluated as unstable and were not recommended for further application. As the suitable shell material for powdered green barley starch-alginate (rate 1:4) and agar-chitosan were proposed, while the second one showed better stability for released proteins. Agar-chitosan shell material was usable for fresh green barley too. For probiotics encapsulation alginate or alginate-starch were chosen because of their porosity and possibility of nutrients diffusion. In real foods the best results were reached with application of probiotic particles into milk. Coencapsulation of powdered barley and probiotics did not confirm inhibition of culture growth. Neither the antimicrobial effect of
propolis and barley nor the cytotoxic effect of
propolis were confirmed.

Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources. Its secondary metabolites composition depends on the local flora around the collection site. During this study, the chemical characterization of a representative sample of a French propolis produced by ‘‘Ballot-Flurin Apiculteurs’’ led, through structural identifications involving HPLC/DAD/MS as well as 1D & 2D NMR, to the identification of 51 compounds, two of them being new. Phenolic acids and esters and flavonoids identified in this propolis indicate that it belongs to the so-called "poplar" type. The evaluation of the biological activities of different extracts or isolated compounds showed that this propolis, which exhibits a significant antioxidant activity (DPPH and ORAC) associated with a very interesting anti-glycation (anti-AGEs) potential, would represent a good candidate for the prevention of diseases involving AGEs such as diabetes. These extracts or compounds also exhibit antifungal and antibacterial activities towards two Candida yeasts on the one hand, and Staphylococcus aureus and its methicillin-resistant and susceptible strains on the other hand, the latter being nowadays responsible for many nosocomial infections. A study dealing with the inter-batch variability accompanied by an optimization of the industrial extraction process using experimental design were…

▼ Abstract: Bioactive compounds have chemical and physical properties, such as antioxidants and dyes, which enrich foods and influence health. Flavonoids are one of the main classes of functional pigments for which the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries have shown greater interest. Several methods of extraction and fractionation of extracts have been used to obtain the bioactive compounds. Extraction and fractionation techniques using supercritical fluids have been distinguished by their selective extraction of bioactive compounds with high quality, since they are included in the concept of "green chemistry", of sustainable development and because they are economically viable when compared to the respective conventional methods. In conventional methods, large amounts of organic solvents, long process times and high temperatures are required, which can promote degradation, with loss of phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity and color. In the field of supercritical technology, researches are developed with the objective of studying processes that increase the extraction yield and the content of phenolic compounds in the extracts. Changes in process conditions, such as pressure and temperature, and the addition of ethanol or ethanol-water mixture as co-solvents of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) are studied. For high polarity compounds, the fractionation of aqueous, ethanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts are obtained using scCO2 as antisolvent. In this context, this work aimed to study the supercritical CO2 extraction of phenolic compounds of Peruvian purple maize (Zea mays L.), green
propolis and Brazilian red
propolis using one - step processes or sequential processes in several stages. It was also studied the use of CO2 as antisolvent to fractionate ethanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts of green and red
propolis. The composition of the extracts was evaluated for Total Monomeric Anthocyanins, Total Phenols, Total Flavonols, antioxidant capacity by DPPH expressed in EC50 and color evaluated by CIELAB parameters. All such analyzes were done by spectrophotometry. The analysis of specific compounds of purple maize (Zea mays L.) and green
propolis was done by HPLC, in vitro analyzes of antiproliferative activity was done for the purple maize pericarp (Zea mays L.) and antimicrobial activity for green
propolis. The results showed that extractions of purple corn with scCO2 were strongly influenced by the use of co-solvents. Two-step sequential extraction, scCO2 extraction followed by EtOH-H2O extraction (70:30, v/v) of the green
propolis and the red
propolis had an influence on the overall extraction yield and phenolic content. The use of scCO2 as antisolvent in the fractionation of green and red
propolis produced fractions of extracts with high contents of phenolic compounds. In general, all extracts showed potential action on antioxidant activity

extratos PEH e PEE, respectivamente.
(4), ácido cafeico (5), aromadendrina (6), trans-nerolidol (7), espatulenol (8) e 3-epilupeol
Sob as condições
todas as concentrações testadas (12,0, 6,0 e 3,0 mg/mL).
indicando a característica "Janus".

The anti-inflammatory activity of propolis is fairly described in the literature and some studies suggest that may be related to the presence of flavonoids, which have inhibitory activity on the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. However the results are not conclusive and thus, many researchers have investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of propolis in several models of inflammation suggesting possibility of multiple mechanisms of action. In this sense, this work has made a comparative study of anti-inflammatory activity of red propolis , a new species, little studied, came from coast of Pernambuco and green propolis, from Minas Gerais in two animal models of inflammation, swelling of the…

This study was carried out to estimate genetic parameters for productive and behavioural traits in Africanized honey bees Apis mellifera. The data were submitted uni and bicharacter analysis using the software MTGSAM. The fixed effects considered in the models were localization of the hive, month-year or season-year and number of frames covered with bees as covariate. The heritability estimates were moderate to high for hygienic behaviour (0,81 ± 0,17), propolis production (0,83 ± 0,16), honey production (0,37 ± 0,22) and syrup-collection rate (0,39 ± 0,22) and lower for percentage of mites on adult bees (0,12 ± 0,13). Syrup-collection rate showed genetic correlation values of 0,21 ± 0,51 with honey production, 0,45 ± 0,33 with propolis production and 0,05 ± 0,43 with hygienic behaviour. Genetic correlation between honey and propolis was 0,20 ± 0,43, between honey production and hygienic behaviour was -0,11 ± 0,41 and between propolis production and hygienic behaviour was 0,23 ± 0,31. Genetic correlations were negative between percentage of mites on adult bees and other traits honey…
