The Black adolescent - in sharp contrast to his White counterpart - is exposed to two broad cultural streams of influence, namely: (a) traditional cultures which form part and parcel of his personal African existence, and (b) Western-orientated (White) culture, which is the dominant way of life, especially in the urban areas. Urban (Western) culture in the RSA is in essence dynamic, accelerated change being an integral part of its nature. This change is often of a politically, socially and economically radical nature, demanding considerable adjustment by Black adolescents who are in the process of westernisation. Black adolescents are consequently often exposed not only to Western culture but also to future shock. Experimental and control groups of Black adolescents were tested by the TAT-Z. The experimental group was then exposed to a series of Western educational television programmes for a period of six months. These programmes reflected specific Western values, norms and practices. The control group was not exposed to these television programmes. Both groups were retested by the TAT-Z after six months. The pre- and post-test results were then compared for similarities and differences. Significant qualitative and quantitative changes were considered and discussed in terms of a westernisation model which was developed as part of the study's theoretical frame of reference. Amongst other things, the results reflected the following: (a) In the experimental group significant changes were observed mainly in the personality areas of self-image and attitude towards/relationships with authority figures. (b) Cultural change is not a condition, but a process. It is not necessarily a one-way or twoway process, but is sometimes a directionless process in search of direction. (c) Exposure to educational television programmes does not necessarily result in accelerated westernisation. Such exposure sometimes even has a regressive outcome, ie reinforcement of tradition-orientated behaviour.
