▼ Terrorism and atrocities have scarred the public memory in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Three atrocities, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania, Australia, and the 2002 Bali bombings, had a significant impact on the communities they most affected. How did the differing governments and communities at these sites respond to the sudden loss of life? How were the competing agendas of these groups managed ? Are there shared and distinctive characteristics in the memorialisation of atrocitites across these countries at the turn of the millenium? In responding to these questions, this study analyses cultural differences in memorialisation at contemporary atrocity sites. It examines the differing responses at the case study sites to the planning and the timing of memorials, the engagement of those affected, the memorial designs and the management of the memorials, including tributes. It is an original comparative study of contemporary memorialisation by a heritage professional directly involved in the management of memorials at contemporary atrocity sites. The original research includes the identification of the role the internet in contemporary memorialisation, an in-depth analysis of the memorialisation of the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site, and the memorialisation in Bali and across Australia of the 2002 Bali bombings. It extends the current scholarship on the memorialisation of the Oklahoma City bombing through identifying the impact of the internet in the memorialisation and in the timeframe of the analysis through to the 15th anniversary in 2010. The comparative analysis of the management of tributes at all the sites identified issues not previously considered in Australian scholarship: that tributes and the response to them is part of the memorialisation and management of contemporary atrocity sites. A combined research method based on an interpretive social science approach was adopted. A range of methodogies were used, including literature reviews, analysis of electronic material, site visits, unstructured in-depth interviews, and participant-observation at memorial services. Studies on history, memory and memorialisation provided the framework for my analysis and led to an original proposal, that all three sites have shared histories of the memorialisation of war and ‘missing’ memorialisation. These shared histories, I argue, strengthened the justification for this comparative study. This comparative study identified differences across the case study countries in the designs of the built memorials, in legislation enacted after the atrocities, the responses to the perpetrators, the marking of anniversaries, and in the management of tributes left at the sites. ▼ Psychological trauma results from exposure to an inescapable stressor that overwhelms a person's ability to cope. During the period of perceived threat a defensive process of denial and suppression frequently operates to control a person's emotional response to the situation. Emergency services personnel in particular, may actively employ a task- oriented approach to traumatic incidents: and suppress their anxiety and fear in order to maintain concentration and undertake their duties most effectively. In psychological terms, this behaviour may be seen as purposeful, adaptive dissociation. However, recent studies of emergency services personnel reveal that there are possible long-term risks associated with the experiencing dissociation during a traumatic situation. While the ability to control emotional response may be viewed as an effective way of coping during an intense or traumatic situation, there is an inherent danger that this inhibition of emotions may become the source of long term psychological and physiological disturbance. Psychological debriefing is a popular method of assistance for emergency services personnel following a traumatic incident. It is designed to promote the cognitive and emotional processing of a traumatic event. During a debrief, participants describe the traumatic experience (including their reactions and emotions) in order to begin to integrate and master key features of the experience. While there is abundant anecdotal evidence suggesting that psychological debriefings can be beneficial, there have also been conflicting reports as to their actual effectiveness. Investigators have indicated that rigorous investigation of the effectiveness of psychological debriefing and its role in post-trauma recovery is urgently required. In particular, such investigations need to provide a clear answer to the question 'Is psychological debriefing related to the prevention of PTSD symptoms and associated psychological sequelae?' In this study, an investigation was undertaken of 96 emergency services personnel involved in the response to the 'Port Arthur massacre', a critical incident in which a lone gunman randomly killed 32 visitors in a popular tourist venue in southern Tasmania. All participants were individually interviewed on two occasions: eight months after and twenty months after the incident. Two key findings from the research project we presented. Firstly, experiencing dissociative symptoms at the time of the incident was predictive of long-term psychological and physiological distress. Secondly, within the group of emergency services personnel who experienced dissociation at the event, those who disclosed their related thoughts and feelings at the subsequent group debriefings showed significantly less long-term psychological distress. The purpose of this thesis is to show how much of an influence King Arthur continues to have on society. Although Arthurian legends were developed in the medieval period, they remain important today. It is also important to see what about Arthur and the Arthurian tales made them endure for so long; the stories are timeless. The influence King Arthur continues to have on society was shown through the continued research and historiographical questions Arthur raised across different fields amongst scholars during different time frames. Arthur also continued to have influence among literary writers throughout the ages from Sir Thomas Malory to Mark Twain, spanning centuries and proving the depth of how engaging of a character Arthur is with audiences. Arthur also maintained his integrity of a moral figure that represented Christian values, but throughout time, as he evolved throughout revival in literature and political history he also became a tool of modern politics and moral virtues of current popular trends, as seen through the Kennedy era. The information and research was obtained through close analysis of primary and secondary sources. Primary sources consisted of documents from the medieval era that have been transcribed into English, the Bible, Arthurian tales, Arthurian movies, and film reviews. Secondary sources consisted of historiographies and scholarly articles. Moving forward with this research, the more current and popular trend happening with the Arthurian revival is the evolution of the hero model. Arthur always represented the image of a hero, and with the film industry booming and constantly trying to revive Arthur every decade, a new version of the hero in Arthur is molded. It is not clear where the new take on the hero leader in Arthur will go, but one thing is clear, the current trend shows that Arthur is taking a more mainstream approach and audiences still are attracted to Arthurian tales, just in a newer form, media.

▼ Arthur Danto’s “end of art” thesis contends that art followed a progressive historical narrative from about 1300 until 1964 AD, when Danto realized that Andy Warhol’s Brillo Boxes demonstrates that an artwork can look like anything without thereby losing its status as art. I critique Danto’s revelation that an artwork can look like anything by showing how what Danto really and quite rightly means is that an art object can now look like anything. Making the art object/artwork distinction clear shows how Danto axiomatically excludes important perceptible qualities of artworks from his scope of perception which might provide outlets to the future changes to the definition of art, and thus the continuation of art history. I work up to this criticism by first addressing an apparent blind spot in Danto’s oeuvre: while Danto depicts the history of art as progressing and culminating within the realm of the visual arts, he is explicit that its implications apply to all artforms. It is a prima facie interesting question whether music can rightly be subsumed under Danto’s grand claims, since Danto’s history of art centers upon painting’s representational properties, which I argue that music lacks. Despite these differences however, music was, like painting, drawn into a Modernist search for its own essence that resulted in John Cage’s 4’33”, a piece which showed that music could sound like anything just as much as visual artworks could look like anything. However, 4’33” is unlike Brillo Boxes in that any two instances of the former can sound completely different from each other, while Brillo Boxes must always look like Brillo boxes. With reference and reverence to George Dickie, I explain how what I call “institutional cues”, which are devised, implemented, debated and changed within the “artworld”, are needed to perceive art as art in some cases, and especially in the case of 4’33”. These institutional cues are what allow art objects to be perceived as artworks, and present opportunities for innovation that Danto’s arbitrarily limited account of what is perceived when perceiving an artwork obscured from him.

Metzger Master of Arts in English California State University, Chico Summer 2009 This thesis undertakes the task of exploring Arthur Miller???s Death of a Salesman through various venues and critical interpretations. In particular, it will focus on the relevance and endeavors of Miller???s writing in its placement of 20th century American drama. Miller???s play serves as a pivotal work balancing on the cusp of the modernist and post-modernist era, embodying man???s search for meaning in the American culture and society around him. The first chapter will summarize key points, give a literature review, and address methodological concerns of this thesis. Opening with Stanley Kauffmann???s definition of ???tragedy,??? this serves as a springboard for the tragic philosophical contentions present in 20th century drama. This chapter lays the foundation of Miller???s viii play as a post-modern epic which seeks to explore man???s perilous situation in the progression of the modern age. The second chapter will then explore elements of tragedy by analyzing an amalgamation of critical sources which elaborate and examine modern tragedy found in both Classical theatre and that of the present day. To quote Miguel de Unamuno, ???To cure the plague is not enough, it must also be lamented with bitter tears. Yes, we must learn to weep!??? (21). The persistence of memory with the expansion of consciousness means that human beings must take time to ???learn??? again how to feel and register losses. This is Miller???s purpose in modern American tragedy, to make his audience experience pathos, the ability to feel again. Through a modern critical guise this chapter will look at the critical interpretation of Miller???s work and motives in writing Death of a Salesman, as a work that fuses classical dramatic tensions with modern themes crucial to our present age. The third chapter will look at the role of the ???American dream??? and its connection to the myth of the Eden and creation. The garden-or wilderness-was once a paradise, a symbol of wealth that embodies man???s creative possibility. But like Adam, Miller???s characters are fallen creatures in a fallen world. Their search for the garden is as futile as Willy Loman???s quest for wealth and riches in a world that does not recognizes who he is. Likewise the dream of a better life, the ???American dream,??? then becomes a myth that cannot be achieved on Miller???s stage. Isto porque o objetivo inicial era propor um modelo de gestão e automação dos processos portuários e esperava-se que a implantação do sistema ocorresse em tempo curto. O modelo que se desejava só estaria pronto depois de implantado e em operação, validando-o. Esse novo cenário possibilitaria a redução de custos logísticos e a utilização racional da malha de transportes, com o incremento da cabotagem e navegação interior, utilizando a Tecnologia da Comunicação e Informação para racionalização dos processos e simplificação das atividades dos agentes públicos e privados. Tal modelo proposto pode ser explicado pela necessidade em se obter um modelo que alcance a melhoria das operações portuárias, considerando o cenário tecnológico internacional, com o incremento da automação, no qual a tendência é a disseminação da troca eletrônica de dados (EDI). Experiências bem sucedidas nesse sentido podem ser constatadas em território nacional, como o sistema Supervia Eletrônica de Dados (SED), utilizado nos Portos de Santos e Rio de Janeiro. Deve ser considerada a avaliação da proposta do modelo SISPORTOS, desenvolvida pelo Departamento de Programas de Transportes Aquaviários (DEPTA), mais abrangente. Apesar de não implantado e não validado pela comunidade portuária, o modelo é apresentado a fim de subsidiar novas iniciativas e submetê-lo à prova. O foco desta tese é direcionado ao sistema de gestão portuária, sobretudo em relação àqueles que dependem do relacionamento entre os agentes, privados ou públicos, nos diversos âmbitos (municipal, estadual e federal).

This monograph could also be called by: elements and subsidies to a model of management and automation of the Brazilian ports, because its initial objective was to propose a model of the port processes. There was an expectation that the implantation of the system would occur in a short time. However, the desired model would only be ready after its implantation and being in operation. ▼ The Port of Rotterdam (PoR), located in the Rhine-Meuse estuary, is subject to sedimentation. In order to keep the port accessible for vessels with high drafts, maintenance dredging works are done. The maintenance dredging over the port area is executed by two parties, PoR itself regarding the harbour basins and Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) regarding the river and waterways. Since 2013 a substantial increase of the yearly total maintenance dredging volume of the area under control of PoR is observed. The problem of this research is the increase in maintenance dredging volume, from an average of 5.2 mln cubic meters a year (over 2005-2012) to an average of 8.9 mln cubic meters a year (over 2013-2016). By analysis of the administrated maintenance dredging volumes database of PoR it is concluded that the problem is concentrated at Maasvlakte I. Including the maintenance dredging volumes data of RWS results in the conclusion that over the entire port area no occurrence of an increase in maintenance dredging volume is observed. A decrease administrated by RWS at the same period of time is concentrated at the area in front of Maasvlakte I, the harbour basin responsible for the increase in maintenance dredging volume of PoR. These findings lead to the conclusion that not an increase of sedimentation over the port area is responsible for the research problem, but a redistribution of the sedimentation rates from the area in front of Maasvlakte I to Maasvlakte I is. An analysis of the events that are potentially of influence on the research problem is performed. Based on the correlation of time and potential impact on the hydrodynamics of the water system, the event 'Construction of Maasvlakte II' is selected for an assessment. Two simulations with an extensive hydrodynamic flow model managed by PoR are run. One simulation includes the layout of the Maasvlakte before the construction of Maasvlakte II, the other includes the layout of the Maasvlakte as it is today. Both simulation use exactly the same initial and boundary conditions. With use of the simulations, the impact on the hydrodynamic conditions within the area of interest is assessed. The results show a significant increase of the tidal filling volume of the Maasvlakte harbour basins with a factor of 1.4. This increase is associated with in particular a significant increase of the horizontal flow velocities, and strengthened by a higher horizontal density gradient as a result of higher mixing rates of fresh and saline water at the Maasvlakte. The increase of the horizontal flow velocity is in particular measured in front of Maasvlakte I and in the connection to Maasvlakte I itself. Within the Maasvlakte harbour basin, the velocities are quickly dampened by the large width of the basin. The results of the assessment correspond accurately with the results of the data analysis. Le Contrôle Non Destructif (CND) hyperfréquence consiste à examiner un matériau de telle manière qu’à l’issue de ce contrôle, son utilisation future n’en soit pas affectée. Ce type de caractérisation est généralement réalisé au travers de la mesure des propriétés de réflexion ou/et de transmission du matériau sous test par un analyseur de réseaux vectoriel conventionnel. Cependant, ce type d’appareillage s’avère surdimensionné en termes d’éventail de mesure et donc de coût pour un usage hors laboratoire. Aussi, nous avons développé, dans une optique de faible coût, des systèmes basés sur la technique six-port. En particulier, dans ce travail, un double réflectomètre quatre-port est développé pour la mesure des paramètres de réflexion et de transmission d’un quadripôle passif dans la bande de 55 - 65 GHz. La proposition d’une instrumentation plus complète, intégrant les ressources matérielles et logicielles, permet d’entrevoir des développements de systèmes spécialisés dans le domaine de la caractérisation hyperfréquence. Ainsi, nous avons adjoint des solutions logicielles, basée sur les réseaux de neurones artificiels, pour le traitement des grandeurs mesurées, afin de satisfaire aux besoins d’une Évaluation Non Destructive plus quantitative. Enfin, dans le but d’effectuer des caractérisations de défauts dont les dimensions sont inférieures à la longueur d’onde, un microscope micro-ondes constitué du système millimétrique associé à une sonde à ondes évanescentes a été proposé. Cet ensemble permet de relever les variations en module et en phase du coefficient de réflexion du matériau sous test, de manière sans contact.

Non Destructive microwave Testing (NDT) consists in examining a material so that after testing, its future use is not affected. Such characterization is usually achieved through the measurement of reflection and/or transmission properties of the material under test by a vector network analyzer. However, this type of equipment is oversized in terms of measurements abilities and cost for a use outside the laboratory. In order to overcome this limitation, we have developed, with a view to low cost, systems based on the six-port technique. In particular, a dual four-port reflectometer is developed for the measurement of reflection and transmission parameters of passive devices in the frequency range of 55 - 65 GHz. In addition, we have proposed complete solution which integrates hardware and software resources allowing the development of specialized systems in the field of microwave characterization. The added software solutions, based on artificial neural networks contribute to satisfy the needs of a non-destructive, quantitative evaluation. Finally, in order to perform characterization of defects whose dimensions are smaller than the wavelength, a mm-wave microscope formed by the mm-wave system and associated with an evanescent wave probe has been proposed. This ensemble reveals changes in magnitude and phase reflection coefficients of the material under test, allowing non-contact measurements.…

▼ This study concentrates on the pricing of seaport infrastructure which includes port charges on the use of access channels and berth facilities. A closer examination of published port tariffs reveals that the port entry and berth use-related port tariffs, often referred to as channel dues and berth occupancy charges, are differentiated based on vessel volume (Gross Tonnage, Gross Registered Tonnage and Length Over All), ship type (container ship, general cargo ship, tanker) and traffic type (foreign-going vessels and coastal vessels). These two charges are one of the main revenue sources for a port authority; however knowledge of the design and imposition of these charges is currently opaque, but nevertheless very useful to port users. This thesis explores the determinants of port infrastructure charges that underpin port pricing policies in world ports. The main objectives of the study are: (a) Identify and conduct an econometric analysis of the effect of various factors on seaport infrastructure charges. (b) To assess the applicability of competing pricing models (pricing approaches) currently used by seaports in different countries and regions in the world. (c) To assess the determinants of port infrastructure tariff design and practices in world seaports and discuss their implications for port management. This thesis brings to notice that, despite the discussion on port pricing theories such as cost-based, market based and cost-benefit theories, the empirical research on this topic remains very limited. Thus, with identified research gaps such as the determination of the level of knowledge that port authorities have in tariff design and their applicability, the thesis investigates the underlying factors influential to the design and practice of port infrastructure tariffs using both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. First, the determinants of port infrastructure charges are studied empirically using data from 159 ports worldwide by employing the ordinary least square and simultaneous equation system method with channel dues and berth occupancy charges as the dependent variables. The result indicates that the pricing of seaport infrastructure is primarily cost-based but other factors are also relevant to the port pricing models currently used by seaports. Among those factors in particular, demand and the type of port management and governance model have been found to significantly impact the level of port infrastructure charges. Second, to complement and triangulate some of the results found in the quantitative model, this thesis examines the primary data collected through an online survey of 67 international seaports to focus on the practical processes and strategic issues in infrastructure tariff design and practice. Les techniques de microscopies hyperfréquences à balayage en champ proche connaissent un intérêt grandissant. Ces méthodes offrent des possibilités de caractérisations surfaciques et sub-surfaciques de matériaux par une mesure sans contact, non invasive et non destructive. Elles permettent également de lever les restrictions concernant la résolution spatiale limitée des méthodes classiques de caractérisation hyperfréquence. Néanmoins, l’instrumentation qui est associée usuellement à ce type de caractérisation, généralement un analyseur de réseaux conventionnel, s’avère surdimensionné pour des applications hors laboratoire. Dans ce travail de thèse, nous proposons une instrumentation complète combinant les techniques multi-port et les techniques de microscopie champ proche. Les étapes de conception et de réalisation de systèmes multi-port opérant en gammes de fréquences micro-ondes et millimétriques sont décrites. Les travaux menés s’inscrivent dans la volonté de proposer des instruments intégrant les ressources matérielles et logicielles. Les potentialités de ces systèmes sont illustrées au travers de la mise en œuvre de bancs automatisés permettant d’effectuer des mesures du coefficient de réflexion en une ou deux dimensions. La démonstration de l’apport de la technique multi-port est faite au travers d’exemples traitant du cas de défauts de nature métallique ou diélectrique, débouchant ou non débouchant en surface d’un échantillon. Ces dispositifs ont pour ambition de sortir des laboratoires de recherche afin d’adresser des applications dans le domaine de l’Evaluation Non Destructive (END).

Scanning near-field microwave microscopy (SNMM) techniques have become important tools in the imaging of materials. These methods offer the possibility of characterizing surface and subsurface materials in a non-contact, non-invasive, and non-destructive way. In comparison with conventional microwave characterization techniques, the spatial resolution has been improved in a large extent with the development of the SNMM. Nevertheless, these techniques generally require the use of an automatic network analyzer that is oversized for applications outside the laboratory. In this work, we propose a new instrumentation that combines the multi-port technique and microscopy techniques. The design and realization of multi-port systems in the microwave and millimeter-wave frequency bands are described. The investigations are driven by the will to propose instruments integrating the hardware and software resources. The potentialities of the systems proposed are illustrated trough applications in the Non Destructive Testing field in both microwave and millimeter-wave frequency bands. The validity of the approach proposed is applied for 1-D and 2-D crack detection. It is demonstrated that these systems present a viable and promising alternative to the costly heterodyne principles.
