▼ The purpose of this research is to understand the limitations of various workflows of reality capture technology by using parameters such as time, quality, accuracy. The paper first identifies available technologies and hardware for the reality capture and then reviews its workflows. The research includes a variety ranging from mobile phones, 360 cameras and DSLR cameras for close range photogrammetry. These devices are used to collect data from a real-world construction site that is classified on its size and location. The data collection workflow is identified, and an onsite experiment is performed. The collected data is used to generate a point cloud that has multiple applications in the AEC industry and is used in this study to develop a 3D model. This 3D modelling workflow for each equipment is analyzed for its accuracy, time and quality. Accuracy is analyzed using a normal distribution statistical analysis of mean deviation and standard variation values. The recorded time is used to calculate the speed of the workflow and total time taken by the identified workflow. The models are visually analyzed for texture quality and geometry. The study results will help the users understand the applications of technology in a better and efficient way which can potentially lead them to achieve better results in lesser time. The study is mainly deriving conclusions and results from the 3D Models and is thus limited in determining the other work flows and applications of photogrammetry. It is based on the study of one common site and the specific types of equipment and their workflows, thus limiting our study and providing a base for further research that can include new parameters and workflows. The study concludes that the DSLR camera is more accurate workflow with a mean error of 2 mm and the smartphone is the fastest photogrammetric workflow with 10 mm mean error accuracy. The 360 camera is not suitable for 3D digital Photogrammetric modelling due to distortion in the images and in the models produced. Photogrammetry being a complex process, its results depend on multiple factors the majority of which are identified in this study and its accuracy varies for each computation thus a range of possible errors for the workflows is defined in the study. The study does a comparative analysis of the workflows and concludes that the final choice of workflow would depend upon the time, size of the site and the accuracy requirements of the reality capture project. ▼ This thesis discusses the design and calibration of close-range stereophotogrammetric systems in biology and biomedicine. Two applications of photogrammetry are described The first is the design and validation of a photogrammetric method of measuring the surface topography of the human cornea. The second encompasses three photogrammetric methods of measuring the aggregation behaviour of underwater animals. Some aspects of the designs have required new instrumentation, others have required further investigation of current techniques or the application of established technique to new circumstances. Two investigations that were a component of the design and calibration process are described in detail. One is an investigation of the accuracy of video tape as a recording medium in digital photogrammetry. The other is an investigation of the geometric reliability of an underwater stereocamera submerged in deep-water. The applications and investigations that are described serve to illustrate a cross section of current technology and methodology in biomedical and biological stereophotogrammetry. They involve both analogue and digital cameras, single media and multi-media environments, and conventional and unconventional data reduction methods. The thesis includes: i. a review of relevant analytical and digital stereophotogrammetric techniques; 11. a description of a new method of measuring the anterior surf ace topography of the human cornea and the design of a digital implementation of a corneal measurement system; 111. a description of three applications of photogrammetry in underwater animal behaviour research; iv. an investigation of the metric characteristics of one type of image recording medium; and v. an investigation of the calibration parameters of an underwater stereocamera. The applications described share three characteristics: i. they illustrate the operational restrictions that can impose on a photogrammetric solution; ii. they have required an investigation of some aspect of the photogrammetric process; and iii. they have required an understanding of the discipline of the end-user. In the light of these characteristics a common theme is developed. Namely the extent to which a photogrammetrist must recognise the objectives, methods, and constraints imposed by the user of photogrammetric data and the way in which that affects the photogrammetric solution.

▼ Commonly in clinical settings, the patient’s posture is visually evaluated by the clinician using anatomical landmark references. However, this measurement is subjective and not quantifiable. Photogrammetry to assess posture was thought to be a possible good clinical alternative to the other methods because it is non-invasive, quantifiable, and less expensive. However, more tests were needed to determine its validity. This study tested the reliability and the validity of five angles measuring craniocervical posture using photogrammetry. Radiographs and photographs of the craniocervical posture of 39 healthy-female subjects were taken in a standardized sagittal standing position. Markers were placed on the back of the subject’s neck and ear. A second photograph and radiograph was taken 1 week later using 21 of the 39 subjects to test reliability. The angles were analyzed using Alcimage® software. Intraclass-correlation coefficient and standard error of measurement was used to test the reliability. Concurrent validity was tested using Pearson correlation and regression analysis. Discriminant analysis was used to test the discriminant validity. Sensitivity/specificity and predicted values were also calculated. The results showed that photogrammetry ICC values were good to excellent when assessed by 2 raters (ICC=0.89-0.99). The posture of the subjects was reproducible when tested using radiographs (ICC=0.89-0.98). One rater was reliable in reattaching the markers (ICC=0.71-0.91) and precise in locating the reference spinous processes (87.8%). Craniovertebral angle (CVA) appeared to be valid in measuring the position of the head in relation to the cervical spine (r=0.84) and to be able discriminate subjects with aligned posture, slight forward head posture (SFHP), and forward head posture (FHP) assessed by 1 rater (84.6% correctly classified). Cervical inclination angle (CIA) appears to be valid in discriminating subjects with aligned and FHP (86% and 88% respectively) but moderate to predict the cervical spine inclination. The cervical lordosis angles were not able to discriminate postures and predict the cervical lordosis. CVA and CIA were able to detect postural differences through the sensitivity/specificity and predicted values analysis. This study supports the validation of CVA and CIA to assess craniocervical posture which may improve the ability of the clinician to detect and quantify craniocervical postural alterations.

▼ The study of the thesis is the orientation and analysis of linear array imagery from satellite platforms. Several types of space borne sensors have been considered for the production of new map products. SPOT data is at present the most commonly used type of imagery, mainly due to its high resolution CCD sensor, high stability, world coverage and availability. However, other types of linear array sensors have been under study for future space programs, and these are studied in this thesis. An overview of different methods of orientation of SPOT stereopairs is given and the advantages and disadvantages of these models are discussed. The weaknesses of across track stereo imagery obtained with SPOT data are pointed out and the use of along track stereo imagery is discussed. The applicability of the different orientation methods to other types of linear array imagery is studied. Existing methods being used for the orientation of along track linear stereo imagery are assessed and a critical view is presented. Based on this study, an orbital approach is developed for the orientation of along track stereo imagery. This model makes use of an additional parameter describing the relative positions of different images taken during the same orbit, reducing the number of control points needed by half. Data was simulated for the tests because no real data is yet available, and the simulation method is described. SPOT data was used as the raw data to simulate imagery of future along track linear array cameras. Tests were carried out to evaluate the precision expected to be obtained with along track stereo imagery from future sensors such as ASTER, OMI and OPS. Tests on blocks of linear stereo imagery considering simultaneously across and along track stereo imagery were also carried out and the performance of the algorithm evaluated. The effect of the characteristics of the images forming a stereopair, and of the conditions of orientation of that stereopair, on the accuracy of the model after orientation was tested for several cases. High correlations between the orientation parameters result in problems in stability in the modelling algorithm. A study of the model variations due to small variations of the orientation parameters was made and weighting matrices were adopted to reduce the effect arising from these correlations. However, the use of weights did not improve the orientation in the case studies, as theoretically expected. Research is advised in this subject using data from future linear array sensors. Early tests carried out using conjugate points to reduce the number of control points required during the orientation process of SPOT imagery are presented. Similar tests were carried out with simulated along track stereo data. Problems of convergence were found when using conjugate points and a reduced number of control points during model orientation.

▼ This study proposes and demonstrates a through-water photogrammetry approach for Satellite Derived Bathymetry (SDB), which may be used to map nearshore bathymetry in the Canadian Arctic. A four step process is used: First, a standard photogrammetric extraction is performed on 2 m resolution WorldView stereo imagery, then apparent depths are calculated by referencing submerged points to the extracted elevation of the water level seen in the image. Due to the effects of refraction, these apparent depths are underestimates, and a refraction correction factor is applied to convert to actual depths. Finally, tidal stage at the time of image acquisition is used to bring depths to chart datum. A post processing step may be applied to remove erroneous depths caused by water surface objects such as boats, debris, or large waves. This was demonstrated in six study areas across Nunavut, Canada to test its robustness under a variety of environmental conditions, including different seafloor types, and under varying sea states. The six study sites were (with vertical accuracy given in Root Mean Square Error/and vertical bias, both in meters): eastern Coral Harbour (1.18/0.03), western Coral Harbour (0.78/-0.32), Cambridge Bay (1.16/0.08), Queen Maud Gulf (0.97/0.13), Arviat (1.02/0.13), and Frobisher Bay, where bathymetry extraction largely failed due to unfavourable sea surface conditions. These findings show that the proposed method has similar or better vertical accuracy as currently established SDB approaches; however, it has several benefits over the established methods which make it better suited for the Arctic. Namely, not requiring the precise atmospheric correction necessary for physics-based models, which is difficult at high latitudes; as well as being able to function in heterogeneous seafloor environments and not needing in-situ calibration data like the empirical spectral ratio approach, better suiting it to remote Arctic waters which often lack existing bathymetric survey data.

▼ The construction industry has been incorporating building technologies in their daily activities to increase work efficiency. Progress monitoring and inspection are a few of the activities that are carried out every day. Mostly this is done manually, and reports are generated. Several researchers have put forth the importance and benefits of using technologies for such frequent activities. Reality computing is one such method which involves reality capture of activities going on around you. Reality computing includes capturing the reality, processing the data and analyzing the results. Several reality capturing technologies are available in the market such as laser scanners, cameras, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), etc. This thesis assesses three such reality capturing technology workflows: Laser scanning, Mobile Lidar Scanning and Photogrammetry using digital camera. An experiment was set up and scans and photos were obtained for a Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) lab at Rinker hall. The results were processed using industry standard software and the technologies were compared for workflows and affiliated parameters. By assessing the workflows, it was observed that the workflow for lidar scanning was the easiest to carry out however, data processing took up large portion of the time. Cost-wise scanners are on a very high end compared to cameras. The point cloud data obtained from a laser scan was very clean and easier to navigate through. Secondly, an industry survey was carried out using a questionnaire that was distributed amongst construction industry professionals. The intention of the survey was to assess to what extent is the construction industry was using these technologies and what the benefits and limitations of these technologies were from the industry perspective. According to the results, participants rated the benefits higher in comparison to the limitations. However, these technologies are not used very frequently for building inspection and manual inspection is still trusted over them. Yet, participants believe that technology based inspection could yield better results and efficiency over manual inspection. ▼ The maintenance and expansion of piping systems of petro-chemical plants is a complex and costly process. These costs can be reduced by knowledge of the as-built dimensions and layout of the piping system. As-built Computer Aided Design (CAD) models of such piping systems, specifically the use of Plant Design System (PDS) software packages, allow for more efficient planning than paper plans. Conventional surveying and analogue photogrammetry have been methods that have traditionally been used to capture the necessary CAD information. More recently, the Department of Geomatics at the University of Cape Town has produced software which replicates the analogue photogrammetric approach using digital images (Cammidge, 1996). The objective of this thesis is to develop a pipe measurement technique which can supplement those currently being used and overcome some of their shortcomings. A further objective is to present an overview of the pipe measurement techniques, photogrammetric principles, image processing techniques and programming considerations which would be required to develop a robust, fully functional, pipe measurement software package integrated with a PDS. The author hopes that this thesis will form the foundation for the development of such a software package for local and possibly international industry. A digital photogrammetric technique related to line photogrammetry is developed. This technique makes use of lines in an image which represent the silhouette edges of the cylinder. The use of photogrammetry based on lines avoids some of the shortcomings of conventional point-based photogrammetry. It is not necessary to identify conjugate points in images, nor is it even necessary for overlapping images of the cylinder to be captured. Furthermore, this thesis reports on a number of tests designed to gauge the developed techniques' accuracy and suitability for use in pipe metrology in an industrial plant. The techniques were found to be capable of achieving results which deviated by, on average, 2-3mm in object position and 0.1° in direction from the likely true values of the cylinder axis. The radius could be determined to better than 1 mm. The techniques developed here proved to be suitably accurate for the purpose of determining the parameters of pipes in industrial plants. However, certain factors may reduce the accuracy and these are also discussed. This thesis concludes that a novel digital photogrammetric technique for measuring pipes in an industrial plant was successfully developed. Recommendations are made as to how the technique might be improved to allow sub-millimetre accuracies to be obtained. Finally, a recommendation is made that the information contained within the thesis be used as the basis for designing a digital photogrammetric measurement module to be linked to a PDS. ▼ In close-range photogrammetry, situations can arise in which it is difficult or impossible to establish a network of control points as required for a conventional absolute orientation procedure. The thesis investigates the replacement of the traditional control network by a few control distances measured between well-defined artificial markers or natural feature points. The measured distances must then serve to reduce deformations suffered by the photogrammetric model in the orientation procedures. All investigations are based on analytical rather than analogue photogrammetry. After a review of the concepts of rotation matrices, least squares adjustment and the generation of synthetic image co-ordinate observations, the study is executed in three major steps. A test field of high precision is established by means of space intersection and a camera calibration method for close-range cameras is developed which combines perspective projection with geodetic observations of the lens system parameters. Thus a problem inherent in many camera calibration methods, namely the exact determination of the perspective centre, is largely overcome. Deformation characteristics related to error in elements of interior and relative orientation are determined by the controlled introduction of errors into these elements. The deformations are presented in tabular and diagrammatical form. An analysis of the deformation leads to the conclusions of theoretical and practical relevance for close-range photogrammetry. As a result of the deformation analysis mathematical models are introduced which utilise the measured distances for the reduction of model deformations. The efficiency of homogeneous scaling, affine scaling and convergency correction, as applied individually and in various combinations, is tested. A mathematical formulation of the converging correction as a restraining condition in a least squares adjustment is developed for this purpose. It is shown that a convergency error is less relevant to close-range photogrammetry than generally assumed and that characteristic model deformations in close-range photogrammetry have the character of affine scale errors. Throughout the thesis algorithms are developed which make it possible to execute all computations on computers with limited memory capacity. A program sample for the relative orientation adjustment is given in Appendix IV to demonstrate the memory saving techniques. Finally the results of the investigation are applied to the survey of shoulder height of African elephants in their natural habitat. Equipment and field work are described and results reported.
