The unique nature of each homeschool practice emphasizes the
importance of an in-depth study regarding the context, which can be

Understanding the discourses can contribute to a better

support to homeschools in a well grounded and responsible manner. A
multiple case-study of four homeschools was conducted, each
involving the educators, fathers and learners in unstructured
interviews and responses on a single projection plate, and
including three observation sessions of day-to-day homeschooling
activities. The aim of the interviews was to learn about the
homeschools from the participants’ perspective. The projection
plate was administered to tap into the participants’ personal
meanings, thus enhancing the truth value of the research. The
observation sessions were intended to yield insight into
participants’ behaviour. Finally, a reflective interview was
conducted with the homeschool educator for clarification and

selective discourse analysis of the interview data to the model of
discursive psychology, identifying the participants’ primary and
secondary discourses, and analysing and discussing a selection of
their discursive statements. The projection plates were interpreted

▼ Aim
Nutrient profiling is defined as “the science of classifying or ranking food items according to their nutritional composition for reasons related to preventing disease and promoting health, and can be used to govern the criteria under which nutrient and/or health claims may be made”. The validation of a nutrient profiling model (NPM) is an essential part of the model development process, and is extremely important for the model to meet basic scientific criteria. This mini-dissertation investigated the content and convergent validity of a suitable NPM for South Africa.
Method
Content validity was tested for by comparing the NPM classification of 131 “indicator” foods with the classification of the “indicator” foods by the Food Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs). Convergent validity was tested for by comparing the standard ranking of a representative data set of food items (n = 128) by nutrition experts with the classification of the food items by the NPM. The questionnaire asked respondents to rank 40 foods (electronically generated from a master list of 128 foods) according to the nutritional information provided from “more healthy” to “less healthy” using a six point Likert scale. The 128 foods were selected to be representative of the South African diet. These questionnaires were sent via e-mail to all full members (n = 1105) of the Association of Dietetics in South Africa. The draft “Guiding principles and framework manual for the development or adaptation of nutrient profile models” dated 22 February 2011 (WHO, 2011), was used as a guide in the validation process of the NPM.
Results
The NPM showed good content validity: the way that the NPM categorises foods correspond well with that of the FBDGs (kappa statistic = 0.73). Two hundred and ninety two responses were received (26.4%) from the nutrition experts, these responses were used to rank the 128 foods by the average score which they received from the nutrition experts. The NPM also showed good convergent validity: the NPM classification of foods had a good correlation with the standard ranking of foods by dietitians (r = 0.853; p = 0.0001).
Conclusion
The NPM demonstrated good content validity by classifying food items in way that supports the FBDGs with the exception of a few processed food items and combined food items. The NPM also demonstrated good convergent validity by classifying food items in accordance with the views of nutrition experts in South Africa.

▼ Recognition of prior learning, better known as RPL, was introduced to training institutions in South Africa after the fall of Apartheid. The objective of RPL was to redress inequalities brought about by Apartheid when disadvantaged groups had less access to training opportunities. RPL was introduced with a combination of associated training and education initiatives such as the National Qualification Framework and the South African Qualifications Authority, all directed for a similar purpose. The South African Nursing Council agreed with the principles of RPL and published a policy document aimed to guide nurse educators to enhance RPL implementation in South African nursing education institutions. Despite the support from accessible legislative and regulatory documentation, RPL is implemented insufficiently in nursing education institutions. The lack of RPL implementation was also identified by the researcher in the Limpopo College of Nursing. This College of Nursing can be described as a symbol of post-Apartheid re-integration whereby nursing colleges centralised into one administrative management office with campuses, satellite campuses and over 120 nurse educators.
The research question asked was what are nurse educators’ perceptions of the implementation of RPL in nursing colleges in Limpopo Province? The aim was to support nurse educators to enhance the implementation of RPL in nursing colleges in Limpopo Province. A qualitative, phenomenological, explorative, descriptive and contextual research design was followed. Seven (n=7) individual, in-depth, unstructured interviews were conducted with nurse educators employed at the X Campus and Y Satellite Campus of the Limpopo College of Nursing. Transcribed interviews were analysed and resulted in three main themes and nine sub-themes. Firstly, the participants voiced their agreement that RPL should be implemented and identified specific benefits and challenges thereof. Secondly, there should be a RPL assessment package that should be open and transparent, be able to assess academic performance against college standards and should minimise inequalities. The third main theme was the need for enhanced awareness of RPL implementation in nursing colleges. Nurse educators lack knowledge about RPL and should therefore be more awareness thereof. In addition RPL should be promoted as a beneficial mechanism to the learning process.
These results were discussed with a literature integration and in the majority of results literature confirmed these findings. Conclusion statements were formulated from the research results and served as the basis for the formulation of recommendations to support nurse educators with the implementation of RPL in nursing colleges in Limpopo Province. The recommendations were directed to firstly the policy makers in nursing education; secondly to the nursing education institutions and thirdly to the nurse educators. Areas for further research were listed. Strategies to enhance trustworthiness and the adherence of ethical considerations were…

▼ Despite the growing numbers and valuable contributions of older individuals to society, they continue to face negative attitudes towards them. Such attitudes are largely influenced by portrayal of older persons in the media. Understanding how the media portrays older people to the public can provide significant insights into the nature of the images from which older people may make comparisons and which inform the perceptions, opinions, and attitudes of other people. There is little knowledge of perceptions of media portrayal in old age, and this study aimed to obtain insight from the point of view of older people regarding how they are portrayed in the printed media. Qualitative research has been applied to gain insight in the older persons’ perceptions. The case study method was chosen since it allowed the researcher to gain an in–depth understanding of older person’s perceptions regarding how they are portrayed in the media. The participants in this study consisted of nine male and 12 female individuals residing in a residential care facility. Persons between the ages of 60 and 85 were purposively chosen since they can contribute to meaningful insight regarding how they are portrayed in the print media. Data was collected by means of conducting focus group discussions and individual interviews. The use of these methods enabled dynamic interactions resulting in the production of rich, detailed information. Data was analyzed using thematic content analysis and key–word–in–context analysis. Guidelines to ensure the integrity of the findings have been applied.
The findings indicated that older persons perceive their portrayal in the media to be minimal in terms of the exposure that they receive. Older persons feel that on the seldom occasion when they are in the media, they are presented as an isolated population separated from younger persons. The portrayal of older persons in the media is also perceived as stereotypical in the sense that older persons are presented as sick, inactive, weak and fragile. The implications of such portrayal according to older persons are that they influence intergenerational relationships and they also confirm stereotypical assumptions about older persons. Older persons feel that they rather want to be portrayed in terms of the valuable contributions that they are making to all spheres of life, despite old age. The media should thus promote positive ageing, which could contribute to the stimulation and motivation of older persons. Findings of this study also indicate that while older persons enjoy reading magazines and newspapers they are often limited to do so due to financial restrictions and physical limitations such as poor eyesight. The findings of this research of older persons perceptions regarding their portrayal in the media has implications for intergenerational relationships as well as to advertisers and marketers who are looking to appeal to the older population.

▼ Many students in South Africa are unable to cope with the academic demands of tertiary
education as they are not fully prepared for Higher Education (HE). Various inefficiencies in
the South African HE system have been identified, including low throughput rates, student
dissatisfaction, unsatisfying graduation rates, learner dropouts, learner repetition, motivation,
self–efficacy, attitude, personality differences, maturation, the retention of failing learners and
unit costs. Student performance and satisfaction cause concern for the government and the
HE sector.
The purpose of this study is to understand student satisfaction amongst Open Distance
Learning BEd Hons students. It further aims to improve student satisfaction and quality in
the programme by recognising the context sensitive needs, expectations and experiences of
students from different cultural–language groups, as well as constructing guidelines to
improve satisfaction. The purposeful sampling consisted of Second year BEd Hons teacherstudents
enrolled for open distance learning at the School for continuing teacher education
(SCTE). A total of 34 students participated in the study. This number comprised of fifteen
students from the focus–group interviews and nineteen students who completed open–ended
questionnaires. Students were chosen according to three criteria dimensions: major
language groups, gender and number of years teaching experience. This study followed a
qualitative investigation of two semi–structured, open–ended focus–group interviews in the
format of conversations, as well as documentary analysis of the teaching and learning policy
of the North West University (NWU), and an open–ended questionnaire. The data were taperecorded
for accurate transcription and analysed by using Atlas.ti. Through the use of
Atlas.ti, I constructed categories of recurring patterns in the dataset, and explored the
relationships of these categories. Different strategies were used to enhance validity and
reliability respectively.
The findings indicated that students’ satisfaction with HE environment is influenced by the
quality of the programmes offered to them, communication between lecturers/facilitators and
students, environment at the learning centres and the support that students received from
HEI. The students in their capacity as clients with Higher education institutions (HEIs) are
influenced by the support they receive from their work environment, as well as the level of
appreciation they receive from HEI regarding their own culture and values. They also value
iii
the environment they experience during course facilitations at the HEIs. The various student
attributes also play a significant part in their satisfaction levels towards the HEIs.
Findings also highlighted that students were not satisfied with the support they received from
the Open distance learning (ODL) unit. It is clear that the students’ perception of the quality
of the programme influences their level of satisfaction. Students are mostly satisfied with the…

▼ Sexual abuse is not being reported adequately. Teachers are in an ideal position to
deal with and report sexual abuse. However, research, as well as practical
experience, shows that teachers are not sufficiently trained to deal with sexual abuse.
Various establishments offer training initiatives to teachers, but it is unclear what the
teachers’ perceptions are of the training after completion thereof.
The goal of this research was to explore the perceptions of teachers after they had
been exposed to an available training programme called “Understanding the Scope of
Child Abuse”. The programme forms part of the training material of Forensic
Assessment Consultation Training (FACT). FACT is a training company which offers
support and training to professional people on the topic of sexual abuse.
The researcher followed a qualitative approach. Twenty teachers from Welkom,
Odendaalsrus, Virginia, Wesselsbron and Bothaville were involved in two separate
training sessions. After completion of the training sessions, two focus group
interviews were conducted in order to explore the participants’ perceptions regarding
the training programme.
The results show clearly that the perceptions of the teachers who participated in the
Understanding the Scope of Child Abuse programme were significantly positive. It is
also clear that there was a certain need among teachers for information such as
provided by the programme. Besides the dispensation of relevant information, which was regarded as valuable and appropriate, participants valued the group
consolidation and felt confident to share experiences regarding sexual abuse.
Participants cherished the information not only as teachers, but also in their capacity
as parents. They agreed there was a need for such training, even before
participating in the study. It was recommended that colleagues, student teachers and
parents should undertake the same training, conducted in a similar way.

▼ Rapid technological development has lead to an increase
in the accessibility of pornography. Some professionals have
labelled pornography as a social issue due to the increase in
accessibility and exposure to pornography. In the past, extensive
research has been conducted regarding the possible impact of
pornography on adolescents as well as on adults. However, there is
discrepancy among professionals with regard to the impact of
pornography, as it seems as if there is little agreement on what
effects or impact regular pornography consumption may have on the
consumer. Some researchers regard pornography as a social issue
with severe ramifications for the consumer. Other researchers view
pornography as harmless time-consuming activities. Therefore, it
seems that inadequate research was previously done to investigate
what impact regular exposure to or consumption of pornography may
have on the consumer’s life. Young adulthood is considered a
crucial phase in human development. Critical developmental tasks
such as reaching emotional and financial independence, defining
morals, values and principles, establishing intimacy and
dedication, choosing a life partner and having children and raise
them, are prevalent during this life phase. There is little
existing research regarding the impact of pornography on males in
this life phase. The hypothesis was made that: should pornography
consumption lead to any hindrance in the acquisition of any
developmental tasks during this specific life phase, that it may
have an effect on the person in a later life phase. The researcher
thus endeavoured to address the gap by looking specifically at the
possible impact of pornography on young adult males, but the
researcher also attempted to contribute to the existing scholarly
debate regarding the impact of pornography consumption on the
consumer in general. The rationale for this study emanated from the
researcher’s desire to add to the existing knowledge base, and to
inform professionals in the therapeutic setting about the impact of
pornography. The researcher undertook a qualitative, applied
research study which enabled her to explore the perceptions of
young adult males who have had prolonged experience to pornography
consumption. Fifteen (15) young adult male participants were
purposefully selected. Snowball sampling was applied as a sampling
method to identify possible participants. The researcher utilised
in-depth interviewing which is also known as unstructured
interviewing as data collection method. One (1) openended question
was directed to the participants and it was formulated as follows:
“What are your perceptions as a young adult male, with regard to
the impact of pornography on young adult males’ lives?” The
researcher did a pilot test in order to ensure that this open-ended
question provided adequate opportunity for the participants to
respond unreservedly. The researcher followed the following steps

▼ Background and motivation
Clothing labels concern the permanently attached labels as well as the temporarily attached
labels known as hangtags that are found on clothing products. Clothing labels assist consumers
when they are deciding whether or not to purchase clothing products, by providing product
information and potential care instructions. Clothing labels are made up of two attributes, namely
the physical nature of clothing labels in addition to the information on clothing labels.
Adequate knowledge, positive perceptions and optimal use of clothing labels may result in
satisfied consumers who make responsible and informed purchases. The aim of this study was
subsequently, to determine male and female consumers’ knowledge, perceptions and use of
clothing labels. The provision of clothing labels does not guarantee that consumers will read,
understand or apply the information on clothing labels. Therefore this research is based on
retailers’ assumption that the provision of informative clothing labels is sufficient to encourage the
usage thereof and that all consumers understand and perceive the clothing labels as intended.
Due to the lack of research that exists in South Africa in the field of clothing labels, it is not known
whether consumers have adequate knowledge and positive perceptions of clothing labels and the
information on them, and whether they use the labels optimally.
Methodology
The research design of this study was non–experimental, quantitative, exploratory, and
descriptive. Questionnaires were used as the measuring instrument to collect the data. The study
population included all the consumers in three municipalities in the North–West Province above
the age of 18 years, male as well as female, who can read and who had purchased a clothing
product some time from one of the selected stores. Data collection was undertaken in the
Bonjana, Platinum and Southern district municipalities, which included, Rustenburg, Klerksdorp
and Potchefstroom. A total of 304 usable questionnaires were obtained.
Results and discussion
On average 71% of the respondents had adequate knowledge of the information presented on
clothing labels (excluding the care instructions) and 65.6% had adequate knowledge regarding
the care instructions. Respondents perceived colours in general (79.9%), letter size (83%) and
readability (77.7%) of information on clothing labels as positive. They found it very important that
the information on clothing labels will not fade (68.8%), and that the positioning remains constant
(78.8%), in addition to not showing (84.9%). Respondents perceived the indication of information
on clothing as positive, regarding the fibre content (84.2%), country of origin (61.2%), size
indication (89.5%) as well as additional information, such as applied special finishes (76.4%) and
indication of eco friendly clothing (69.5%) and licensed trade marks (78%). Respondents
sufficiently made use of the care instructions in words (68.1%) and symbols (63.2%) when

▼ Textile product labels are provided on the clothing and household textile products to assist consumers with important product information. However, the assumption cannot be made that because the label is available on these products it will be used by consumers. Consumers do not base their pre– and post–purchasing decisions on reality but rather on what they perceive to be the reality. Thus consumers’ perceptions of textile product labels need to be studied as it influences their pre– and post–purchasing decisions and use of these labels. Consumers use their perceptions as a frame of reference for making purchasing decisions. This study determined consumers’ perceptions, in order to form a better understanding of their textile pre– and post–purchasing decisions. However, perception is not a singular concept but an interactive process. Therefore, the present study, done in the Gauteng Province, aimed to determine consumers’ perceptions of clothing and household textile labels, by focusing on the perceptual process of consumers. The first objective was to determine consumers’ awareness of labels on clothing and household textile products. Secondly, it was determined whether consumers’ attention is drawn to labels of clothing and household textile products. Thirdly it was determined whether labels on textile products are important to consumers and finally, whether consumers interpret labels on textile products. An interviewer–administered questionnaire was used as the data collection technique. A total of 411 questionnaires were administered by trained fieldworkers. The study location was three different regions in Gauteng Province, namely: Pretoria, Vereeniging and the West Rand. Public locations were used for the recruitment of respondents selected within the three regions, which included: schools, retirement villages, parking areas and government institutions. This contributed to the probability that a diverse group of respondents participated. The study population consisted of 44.5% males and 55.5% females. The home languages most spoken among the respondents were English (20.9%), Afrikaans (21.1%) or isiZulu (16.5%). Respondents generally tended to have a positive perception regarding textile product labels. The results illustrated that respondents tended to agree to be aware of label information and that the front and back panels of the label draw their attention. However respondents tended to be neutral as to whether the information is important enough to read. Respondents mostly agreed that they interpret the symbols on textile product labels. Although respondents tended to perceive textile product labels positively, it still remains unclear whether it is important enough for consumers to use these labels found on textile products. By striving to improve consumers’ perceptions regarding textile product labels through better labelling initiatives and consumer education on labels, consumers might view labels as important and use them before and after purchasing a textile product. This will in effect teach consumers…

▼ Introduction: From a legal point of view, gender-based discrimination is not condoned in the workplace. However, perceptions that such discrimination exists persist. Understanding the extent and nature of the phenomenon may contribute to the management thereof. Aim: The aim of this research was to report on the nature and level of workplace gender-based discrimination from the perspective of managers and employees, as well as by making use of objective measures. Method: Interviews were conducted with 75 managers focusing on the prevalence of gender-based discrimination in specific organisational processes. Furthermore, 145 managers and 1 740 employees completed questionnaires on this topic. Results: Managers reported flaws in all the organisational processes investigated. According to these managers, some processes showed a pro-female bias whilst others displayed a pro-male bias. More female than male employees reported discriminatory incidents at work, but both groups reported gender-based discrimination. Gender-based discrimination was the most prominent form of discrimination reported by women. Some female respondents reported pro-male and others pro-female discrimination. The same pattern applied to men. No statistically significant gender wage gap was found and the salaries of males and females were not differentially affected by qualifications, training, workplace experience or family responsibility. Managers and employees concurred that gender-based discrimination was the primary source of discrimination in the workplace, and they reported similarly on the consequences of this problem. Conclusions and recommendations: Managers are aware of discrimination in organisational processes. This awareness can be used to initiate programmes aimed at minimising discrimination. Both males and females are exposed to gender-based discrimination and they report similar consequences. This suggests that interventions should be directed at both groups. The different, and often opposing, reports provided by the male and female groups support the social identity theory and conceptions of group-serving bias. From the objective data it can be concluded that perceptions of being discriminated against are the result of psycho-social processes and not necessarily the result of justifiable biographical differences.

▼ As a social worker working for the Department of Social Development, the researcher is rendering services to the Polokwane surrounding areas in Ga-maraba village in Limpopo Province. The beneficiaries of these services are mostly Pedi-speaking people under the leadership of Chief Maraba. Ga-maraba area is located approximately 40 km away from Polokwane city. When rendering services to the Pedi families, the researcher has observed that a number of child sexual abuse cases occur, which are not reported due to what Pedi culture validates as being sexual abuse. Most of the children in these cases are being sexually abused both by family members and non-family members, and such incidents are not reported. After these observations, the researcher was triggered to investigate what might be the cause, unfortunately no study has been conducted in this specific geographic area of Ga-maraba.
The aim of the research was to explore the perceptions of Pedi-speaking caregivers concerning the disclosure of child sexual abuse in order to gain insight into the possible contributory factors and the knowledge of these caregivers about what constitutes child sexual abuse as well as to empower them to disclose child sexual abuse. Purposive sampling was conducted among the Pedi-speaking caregivers.
This research reveals that Pedi culture regards rape as child sexual abuse and the other sexual offences according to criminal law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act 32/2007) are regarded as minor things and taboos. These findings clearly indicate that Pedi-speaking care-givers do not possess adequate knowledge of child sexual abuse. As a result, there is a need for the establishment of proper programmes that address child sexual abuse in the area of Ga-maraba and the areas around Polokwane. The findings also indicate that when such cases arise in the Pedi community, they are not disclosed to the outside world, the families affected prefer to resolve these problems among themselves, and traditional courts intervene if the families disagree.

▼ Many countries, including South Africa, are facing the reality of insufficient water supplies to meet their present and future water demands due to decreasing freshwater availability and increasing demand. Increased populations and climate changes further exacerbate the problem. South Africa is considered the thirtieth driest country in the world with limited supplies of water which are unevenly distributed. Thus there is a need for alternative water sources to augment the freshwater supply. Wastewater reuse has been identified worldwide as a viable option to augment water supplies. While technologies are available to ensure proper treatment of wastewater to even potable standards, many countries have experienced public resistance to wastewater reuse due to negative perceptions of consumers. For wastewater reuse initiatives to be successful public acceptance is imperative.
The aim of this study was to assess perceptions of consumers in the Vaal Triangle on wastewater reuse. This is the first study conducted in the Vaal Triangle on wastewater reuse hence this information can be valuable in future when wastewater reuse projects are implemented
A questionnaire to measure perceptions of consumers on wastewater reuse was developed based on previous studies and distributed to people residing in the Vaal Triangle area. A response rate of 74% (515 completed questionnaires) was obtained from 700 distributed questionnaires. The results showed that socio-demographic factors such as age, race, qualification and level of employment affect the perceptions of consumers on wastewater reuse. Additionally, knowledge of wastewater reuse and water scarcity had a positive effect on consumer‟s perceptions. Some of the major reasons why consumers are not receptive to wastewater reuse are health concerns, lack of trust in the implementing agencies, poor management of the plants and safety of chemicals used to treat the water. Lack of knowledge on wastewater reuse was raised as a major concern in the study. All these concerns need to be addressed to ensure success of wastewater reuse projects within the area. Limitations within the study were identified and recommendations for future research were made.

▼ The purpose of this study was to explore and develop understanding of nurses and midwives’ perceptions and attitudes towards the implementation of CPD, aiming to provide them with a platform to make recommendations to enhance the attendance of CPD.The study was conducted in a public regional hospital in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The purposive exploratory descriptive qualitative research method was used. Data was collected through Focus Group Discussions. Participants comprised of three focus group discussions.
A semi-structured guide with open –ended questions was used and discussions were recorded with an audio recorder which were transcribed verbatim. Content analysis of the data was done.
The study yielded themes, sub-themes and codes during analysis. Participants perceived CPD to have benefits to keep nurses updated with knowledge, skills and improvement of attitudes. ▼ Taxation is an ever changing field and the need for
people who specialise in this area is continually growing. As a
result of this the need for specialist tax related services; it has
evolved into a profession of its own for quite a while in South
Africa. Professional and specialised consulting occupations require
a certain degree of specialisation to attain a level of superiority
in the commercial world. To attain the status of a professional or
to enjoy the status of specialised consultant requires extensive
training and education. Taxation is taught at most universities
albeit not as a degree in its own right but there are some
exceptions. Currently South African universities offer a number of
different undergraduate degrees that incorporate the discipline of
taxation as a
subject. Currently there is no set of standards or a
professional body that regulates any individual claiming to be a
tax specialist or practitioner. Consequently it is unsure whether
or not the spectrum of topics and other required content included
in the various degrees offered by South African universities, is
educated at the required level to provide students with the
necessary practical and theoretical skills, as well as other
desired qualities, to survive in the ever changing and evolving
world of taxation and be successful as a professional tax
practitioner as expected by their employers. Using questionnaires,
data was obtained from the tax departments of the universities
accredited with SAICA. The results indicated, as expected, that a
higher level of knowledge is expected of a student with a
postgraduate qualification. In addition to this the more
specialised the industry/field becomes to which the specific tax
topic applies, the lesser level of knowledge is expected of a newly
qualified candidate irrespective of the qualification. The
conclusion drawn in this study was that educators place a high
level of expected theoretical knowledge, practical skills and
personal attributes on a newly qualified student but this level
does not necessarily coincide with the level expected by employers.
Consequently educators and employers need to reach a consensus
about the curricula included in various degrees offered by South
African universities in order to prepare them for practice.

kommunikasie met potensiële vrywilligers as belangegroep.
Die hoof bevindinge van die studie toon dat foto’s ’n rol speel om betekenis by te dra tot
kommunikasie met belangegroepe, en dat die impak van die foto’s op MSF se webtuiste ’n rol
speel in potensiële vrywilligers se persepsievorming.

▼ There is little understanding of marijuana use by psychiatric patients, specifically regarding the issue why they continue smoking marijuana in spite of the negative consequences, such as being readmitted to psychiatric hospitals due to a diagnosis called marijuana–induced psychosis. Therefore, it is important to understand why psychiatric patients continue to use marijuana, despite experiencing its negative effects on their condition.
From the above background, the researcher identified the need to explore and describe the perceptions of psychiatric patients regarding marijuana use in Potchefstroom, North–West Province. The exploration and description of these psychiatric patients' perceptions regarding marijuana use will provide insight into more appropriate care and treatment in order to reduce the readmissions of psychiatric patients due to marijuana–induced psychosis.
A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design was followed in order to give 'voice' to the perceptions of psychiatric patients regarding marijuana use. Purposive sampling was utilised to identify participants who complied with the set selection criteria. The sample size was determined by data saturation, which was reached after ten individual interviews with psychiatric patients. Unstructured individual interviews were utilised to gather data after written approval from the research ethics committee of the North–West University (Potchefstroom campus), North–West Provincial Department of Health, the clinical manager of the psychiatric hospital where data were collected, as well as from the psychiatric patients. After the co–coder and the researcher of the study analysed the data independently, a meeting was scheduled to reach consensus on the categories and subcategories that emerged from the data.
The findings of this study indicated perceptions that psychiatric patients have on: the use of marijuana, the negative effects of marijuana use, marijuana use and mental illness, and stopping the use of marijuana. From this results it seems that although some patients realise that stopping the use of marijuana might be difficult, some patients want to walk the extra mile by helping other people to stop smoking marijuana. It is of specific interest that psychiatric patients seem to expect external groups to take responsibility on their behalf to terminate the use of marijuana, namely: foreigners, the police and the Rastafarians.
From the findings, literature and the conclusions of this study, recommendations in the fields of nursing education, nursing research as well as nursing practice were made.

▼ Intergenerational research aims to promote greater understanding and respect between
generations and contribute to building more cohesive communities. Intergenerational
relationships form part of our social make–up as they affect social interactions, the use of
local spaces, opportunities to take part in public life on an equal basis with others, the degree
to which people participate in community life as well as efforts to improve such life.
Research indicates that what matters most for young adults and older people is the quality of
the interactions taking place between them. Very little is known about the nature of the
intergenerational relationships between young adults and older people in an African context.
The aim of the study was therefore to explore the intergenerational relationships between
young adults and older people in a rural African community.
A qualitative research method was used in the study. Two groups of participants were
selected though availability sampling method. The group consisted of 11 male participants
between 20 to 35 years of age, 6 participants were over the age of 60 (one male and five
female). The younger participants were asked to make visual representations of how they
perceive the older generation by means of using the Mmogo–method. After the younger
participants described their visual representations, the older participants were asked to reflect
on the descriptions given by the younger participants. The older people assumed an active
listening position while the young adults shared their representations. Informal group
discussion was used to facilitate a process of sharing and comparing of perceptions among
the participants. The data obtained from the group discussions and applying the Mmogomethod
were analysed on the basis of thematic and visual analysis. The trustworthiness of
the study was ensured through crystallisation.
The results indicate that the relationships between young adults and older people consist
of the ambivalent perceptions of the young adults and mostly extreme negative perceptions of
older people. As a result, the relationships between the young and old generations seem to be
dissatisfying for both generations. Both young and old discover essential tensions in the
relationships they create and sustain across generations. Intergenerational tensions may not be so easily identified or concretely observable in everyday behaviour, attitudes, and emotions.
But, consistent with the dialectical framework, it is part of all intergenerational relationships
at some level. Identifying these underlying tensions is important so that we do not glorify or
idealise the interactions of young and old whenever and wherever they occur. Solidarity is
not the only outcome of intergenerational relationships; ambivalence as well as conflict is a
part of the theory that has often been neglected.
In view ofthe importance of intergenerational relationships between the young adults and
the older people, intergenerational interventions should be planned…

▼ Pregnancy and childbirth are important life experiences in a woman’s
psychosocial and psychological development. For many women, vaginal birth is
still considered an integral part of being a woman and becoming a mother.
Furthermore, it is thought to promote maternal well-being through helping women
to match their expectations to experiences. For these women, a failed natural
birth can be a psychological, psychosocial, and existential challenge that can
result in significant and far-reaching consequences for their psychological wellbeing.
Research, especially recent research, on the experiences of women who most
wanted to, but were unable to deliver their babies naturally is relatively rare. This
is surprising given the potential implications of these experiences on a mother’s
emotional well-being, as well as for her feelings towards her new baby.
Nevertheless, literature on the topic presents a coherent perspective on the
problem and indicates that these women experience difficulties in adapting to not
being able to fulfill their dream of delivering their baby naturally. There is no
existing research on the subjective experiences of South African women who delivered their babies by unplanned Caesarean section. This study therefore
aimed to contribute to knowledge that may fill this gap to some extent.
Through purposeful sampling, ten mothers who had wanted to deliver their
babies naturally, but had not been able to for whatever reason, were selected as
the study sample. Various aspects of their birth experiences were explored in indepth
phenomenological interviews. This allowed the researcher to probe certain
aspects offered by participants in order to understand and explore their
contributions in as much depth as possible. A semi-structured, open-ended
approach allowed for the exploration of relevant opinions, perceptions, feelings,
and comments in relation to the women’s unplanned Caesarean experiences.
The transcribed data was synthesized within a framework of phenomenological
theory, where women’s experiences were analyzed and explored in an attempt to
understand how participants made sense of their experiences.
The different aspects of women’s experiences were explored in three substudies.
The results are reported in three manuscripts/articles.
Research suggests that post-partum adjustment difficulties are influenced by the
potentially virulent stress reactions generated in response to a perceived birth
trauma. The objective of the first article was to explore women’s labour and
birthing accounts with specific regard to the subsequent stress responses
experienced. The stress responses experienced by the women in this study both prior to, and during the Caesarean section were predominantly anxiety-based.
This was distinguished from the post-partum period, where women described
having experienced more depressive symptoms. Post-traumatic stress
responses are associated with negative perceptions of the birth, self and infant.
The experience of adverse emotional consequences…

▼ Pain is a very common problem experienced by the general population and children in particular. It goes beyond personal suffering and affects all dimensions of the quality of life and general functioning of both adults and children, be it the physiological, psychological or financial aspects. Children may suffer from pain that may either be chronic or acute, depending on the diagnosis. Assessment of pain in children is equally important as that of adults, except that they lack the verbal fluency and cognitive development to communicate their pain. Children’s experience of pain is similar to that of adults. Pain assessment is a key aspect in the nursing management of children and delivery of care within the Primary Health Care (PHC) setting. Effective pain assessment is thus reliant on comprehensive assessment of the child and his or her pain.
The aim of this research was to explore and describe practices and perceptions of professional nurses working in a PHC facility regarding pain assessment of children under five years in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality and to formulate recommendations for professional nurses in PHC facilities to facilitate pain assessment in PHC settings.
A qualitative study design was used and data was collected with the use of focus groups. A purposive sampling was conducted to select participants who represent the target population. The sample used for the study included all the professional nurses working in PHC facilities registered with the South African Nursing Council and that have at least one year of experience. The practical training of the researcher to conduct an interview was done prior to the actual research. A pilot focus group was conducted and the interview schedule was finalised. Semi-structured focus groups were used to obtain data from the participants. The researcher conducted 6 focus group interviews attended by 32 professional nurses. Data was collected until data saturation was achieved. Trustworthiness was ensured in accordance with the principles of credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability. Data was captured on a digital voice recorder and transcribed verbatim. Field notes were taken during each focus group.
Data analysis was done by means of content analysis by the researcher and an independent co-coder. After consensus and saturation, three major themes emerged.
Each theme was identified and divided into sub-themes and was consequently discussed together with the relevant data obtained from literature. The findings indicated that professional nurses perceive the assessment of pain in children under five years as a challenge. The combination of signs and symptoms to make decisions with pain assessment was identified as an area of concern. The participants further p erceived the history provided by the parent as important in the process of pain assessment.
The conclusions drawn are that the professional nurses acknowledge that they don’t take sufficient notice of pain in children under five, which means that children with pain are…

▼ Current research in the field of geriatric audiology
focuses on the audiological assessment and management. However
there is a lack of published work describing the perspectives of
the geriatric individuals with a hearing loss regarding the
audiological service delivery received. This study aimed to
determine the perspectives of the geriatric individuals with a
hearing loss in this regard. Convenience sampling was utilised to
recruit 50 geriatric individuals who wore hearing aids, in Gauteng.
A two phase methodology was employed in this study. Phase one
included a questionnaire aimed to determine the geriatric
individuals’ perspectives of the audiological assessment and
management processes conducted by the audiologist. Phase two, a
focus group discussion regarding audiological service delivery,
included 7 geriatric individuals who were randomly selected from
the 50 geriatric individuals in phase one of the study. Results
revealed that geriatric individuals with a hearing loss; perceived
the audiological services received as adequate. However the results
obtained from the questionnaire indicate that the majority of these
geriatric individuals were not provided with a full test battery of
assessment and management procedures as required. Therefore South
African audiologists need to evaluate the assessment and management
procedures used when working with the geriatric population.

The perceptions

▼ There are very few extensive sample studies that target
normative versus pathological sexual behavioural problems. Debate
exists around the role of attachment when treating children who
come from chaotic backgrounds. Children from these backgrounds may
lack the stability and predictability that they need in order to
develop the appropriate skills to regulate their affects,
understand and maintain healthy and safe relationships, and develop
a strong sense of self and good behavioural control mechanisms.
Because of a lack of knowledge regarding sexualised behaviour,
social workers working with children in middle childhood may find
it difficult to distinguish between appropriate and less
appropriate sexualised behaviour in children in their middle
childhood. It may happen that appropriate sexualised behaviour in
children is labelled as problematic, while the function of the
behaviour may in fact be defined as an act of self-nurturing. The
researcher has since asked the question about the link between
sexualised behaviour and self-nurturing amongst children in
children’s homes. The relationship between these two variables can
have a significant effect on the way professionals view children
who display sexualised behaviour in institutions where there is a
lack of affection and significant attachment to adult figures.
Children in middle childhood who display sexualised behaviour have
specific needs that role players, specifically social workers, have
to keep in mind in order for effective intervention to take place.
If discrepancies exist in this area, it could impact negatively on
the implementation of services rendered to these children. For the
proposed study the collective case study design was the most
appropriate design as the researcher collected and analyzed
qualitative data by to doing semi-structured interviews. The
semi-structured interviews were used to gain a detailed picture of
participants’ beliefs or perceptions about, or accounts of the
particular topic. Qualitative data was analyzed by means of
planning for the recording of the data, managing and organizing the
data, reading and writing memos, generating themes, categories and
patterns in order to prove or contest a hypothesis. In order to
ensure the success of the study, the researcher did a pilot study
before the main investigation itself and ethical aspects were
adhered to by the researcher throughout the study. Through the
empirical study, it can be concluded that there is a significant
relationship between sexualized behaviour and trauma that children
experience. However, when sexualized behaviour as a nurturing
mechanism becomes obsessive, compulsive and there is no balance,
then only can it be viewed as a problem and should be addressed. It
is important to remember that ‘sexual play’ should be seen as a
normal part of childhood development. There was general consensus
that sexualized behaviour could be regarded as a self-nurturing
mechanism. Focus was put on the needs of children and how it
related to inappropriate sexualized behaviours and…
