▼ In this study the focus is on the pastoral guidance of the emotionally traumatized person. From the exegetic study it became clear that suffering forms part of every person's life and growth. In Ecclesiastes 7: 1-14 it is stressed that not only is prosperity given by God but that God also allows suffering. There with Romans 8: 18-25 stresses that which awaits the true believer in eternal life. It is given as motivation to persevere through the here and now of suffering. The Epistle of James (5:13-16) emphasizes in particular the communion of believers as a source of support. Psalm 13 encourages the believer to call upon God in his distress because God listens to his children's cries of distress.
In the chapter dealing with Theological Basis Theory it became clear that emotional trauma normally happens where the person's own outlook on life was darkened by something that happened to him, which he was not prepared for. A pastoral approach to therapy is consequently based on the viewpoint that God is the Great Healer. In the process of pastoral counseling, attention must also be paid to any pending processes of mourning. Where the whole process of consultation eventually results in an attitude of servant hood in the counselee, it has truly been successful. It further became evident that various aids may creatively be used in process of guiding the counselee to wholeness -one of the most prominent of these is prayer that has to be continuously interwoven with the different counseling sessions.
As far as the Meta-theory is concerned, the focus has been on contributions made by disciplines outside theology. It was pointed out that emotions, inter alia, can also become "sick" on occasion. This happens where a person does not allow himself to live through specific experiences of his emotions. A person, however, has control over the value he attaches to on emotion. Each person is unique and consequently the experiencing of his or her emotions will differ from person to person. Under normal circumstances a person experiencing intense emotions will allow them to flow freely from the body. Where this does not happen, such a person must receive professional help from somebody that can guide him towards healing.
As part of the Meta-theoretical Section, there has also been focused empirically on the emotional trauma of a number of co-workers. It has been found, inter-alia that emotional pain that has not been dealt with, often leads to emotional trauma. It is also possible that emotional trauma may be disguised at times and may manifest itself by way of certain symptoms. Empirical research has again confirmed the important fact that the emotionally traumatized person must be guided to identify the deeper roots of the problem in order to activate the healing process.
In the Practice-theoretical Section a number of practical guidelines stemming from the basic-theoretical and meta-theoretical perspectives have been formulated for the pastoral guidance of the emotionally traumatized person to emotional and spiritual healing.…

▼ The researcher proposes guidelines in a model for pastoral counselling through the use of play with children.
There is a new awareness of the place of the child in the church. The researcher has done pioneering work through the study in this area. An approach to the healing effects through play has been investigated with the direction of the Osmer model for practical theology. An Empirical study using the “mixed research method” was conducted and all results recorded.
The appearances of child play and cultural practices surrounding the child in the Mediterranian world were examined. Jesus Christ’s approach, how He received the children and spoke out over them was investigated. The narratives, metaphors (parables) and projections of Scripture are of value. Play therapy developed from every physchological viewpoint and the researcher summarised major schools of psychology and showed the development of play therapy.
The use of play therapy, resources and theories were discussed. A child first starts abstract reasoning at the age of eleven years, and until then their words are toys and language play.
The researcher addresses issues of child theology. The history and background of pastoral counseling as a subdivision in practical theology was addressed. Incidences of pastoral moments occur naturally during the time of play. Prayer is an integral part of the planning and interpretation of events in the play room. Questions from the child about God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are treated honestly and Scripturally. The counselor needs to be sensitve to the child’s search for God and to transfer Scriptural truth to the child.
Human- and Scriptural views of the reformatory tradition is included in the appendix.

Doktoritöö sisuks on: a) interdistsiplinaarse meeskonnapõhise hingehoiu mudeli loomine Eesti tervishoiuasutuste jaoks, b) loodud mudeli täpsustamine Eesti haiglates töötavatelt tervishoispetsialistidelt võetud intervjuude põhjal.
Käesolevas töös loodud interdistsiplinaarse meeskonnapõhise hingehoiu mudel on mõeldud: a) hingehoiu interdistsiplinaarseks rakendamiseks tervishoiuasutustes, kus plaanitakse hingehoidja kaasamist koosseisulisena; b) interdistsiplinaarse koostöö tõhustamiseks hingehoiu pakkumisel neis tervishoiuasutustes, kus hingehoidjad juba koosseisulistena kollektiivi kuuluvad.
Interdistsiplinaarse meeskonnapõhise hingehoiu eestikeelne mudel on esitatud kokkuvõtvas tabelis doktoritöö lisas IV.
subject of the current thesis is interdisciplinary team based
pastoral care and its applicability in Estonian healthcare institutions. The aim is to create an interdisciplinary team based
pastoral care model that would be adaptable in different Estonian healthcare institutions. The thesis hopes to uphold the view that people should not be deprived (or feel isolated) from important parts of their lives. This may easily happen to the hospital’s inpatients if they cannot follow their usual religious/spiritual life anymore.
While
pastoral caregivers are involved in some Estonian hospitals (either as members of palliative care team, working in different clinics or departments, or visiting the hospital), most Estonian hospitals do not provide
pastoral care at all. The interdisciplinary team based
pastoral care model takes into account Estonian sociocultural and institutional background, is adjusted according to the insight given by the professionals of Estonian hospitals, and is given in flexible guidelines to make it adaptable for different healthcare institutions. As such the model is intended to be useful for: a) involving…

Sexual abuse of

▼ This research will focus on emotional trauma as a result
of sexual abuse of a young girl within a family by a stepfather.
This is a great challenge to
pastoral caregivers within the context
of South Africa in particular in the Methodist Church of Southern
Africa; where sexual abuse within the family surroundings has
become the norm.
The impact of sexual abuse in young girls is vast
and varied. The most commonly experienced impact of sexual abuse is
posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The most frequent observation
among victims of sexual abuse is that the victimised young girl
tend to engage in extreme sexualized behaviour compared to other
young girls who are not sexually abused
Since the abuse took place
on and in the body; the body becomes the enemy. They carry a great
deal of pain and memories. This is evident in Ann’s life; where she
desperately tries to cope with the pain; which can lead to eating
disorders, self-inflicting injuries, inability to have sex, or
engaging in sex often, poor body image.
This
pastoral care study
is an investigation of traumatic effects of sexual abuse of young
girls by stepfathers. It seeks to give answers to questions like:
- How does sexual abuse on young girls within a family impact on
their lives?
- Does sexual abuse that occurs in the life of a
young girl affect the relationship within the family and
community?
- How do young girls fall into the sexual abuse trap?
- How traumatically affected are young girls who grew up in a
sexually abusive environment?
- Can a male be a therapist for this
abused girl?
This study aims to deal with the pain of the
survivors of sexual abuse and understand the background of these
young girls. And to help survivors of sexual abuse to heal of all
the wounds and year of trauma that they went through during their
childhood and regain dignity and confidence, again, in life for
their future sexual and family life. The first level of empowerment
that this research seeks to achieve is to bring the survivor to
accept and forgive the perpetrator in their future lives.
Secondly, to assist the care giver to develop counselling models
that would counsel sexual abuse survivors and their families.
And
lastly, to help survivors learn to cope and deal with this
situation and understand that it is possible to live a positive
life after the emotional and traumatic incidences that they had
gone through.
This research seeks to create awareness on the
traumatic impact that sexual abuse has on the lives of young girls.
The findings of this research will help
pastoral caregivers, to
deal effectively with this issue. This research will further
empower young girls who have undergone sexual abuse to restore
their dignity and, finally, help them to move from a place of
paralysis to a place of being healers.
The author undertakes this
research with the assumption that Young girls that are raised
within a sexual abusive environment are affected negatively by such
experiences. From Ann’s experience, the author asserts that young
girls are traumatized and may not…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A critical reflection on the researcher’s personal story - a white Afrikaner woman and a
member of the Dutch Reformed Church - and her raised awareness regarding the devastating
effects of racism, sexism and poverty in South Africa informs the development of a
participatory
pastoral praxis. The liberation of South Africa and the post-apartheid social
reality have unmasked the confessional and kerygmatic approach of practical theology,
revealing them to be supportive of dualistic thinking. This approach has frequently blinded us
from understanding the ideologies of apartheid and patriarchy and the extent and complexity
of their oppressive effects. This research is about doing theology in context and, as such
marks a radical shift in practical theology from a confessional-kerygmatic to a publichermeneutical
approach.
From a methodological perspective the hermeneutic spiral applied in theory formation
challenges the church to participate in a praxis approach that will contribute to the healing and
transformation of post-apartheid society. Feminist theology and post-structuralist theory,
within which Narrative
Therapy is positioned, provide the critical lenses for viewing the social
realities of South African society. As an interdisciplinary partner to practical theology,
Narrative
Therapy contributes to liberating action as expressed in a participatory praxis.
While holding the metaphor of the Shepherd as expression of God’s compassion, the
normative guiding metaphor for a participatory
pastoral praxis is the parable of the Good
Samaritan. As an embodiment of God’s transformative love and care towards our neighbour,
the Good Samaritan points the way to a new way of doing
pastoral care. Ten characteristics
of a participatory
pastoral praxis are identified: the personal is the professional and political;
participation with the other; participation with people; participation with awareness;
participation in voicing; participation with our bodies; participation together with others;
participation in social transformation; participation in interrelatedness and participation in
doing restitution. Taken together, they make a significant contribution to the theory formation,
ethics and praxis of practical theology with a transformative and healing agenda.
The empirical research includes a contextual analysis of the main social problems confronting
post-apartheid South Africa: namely, racism, sexism, poverty and the ways in which the
HIV/AIDS pandemic interrelates with these. The researcher uses case examples from her
praxis - as therapist, community participant, teacher of Narrative
Therapy and member of the
leadership of the Dutch Reformed Church - to research the transformative effect of a participatory
pastoral praxis. In this respect the prophetic dimension of a participatory praxis
of care could play a decisive role within the ecclesiology of the Dutch Reformed Church.
The transformative effect of Narrative
Therapy in working with survivors of childhood sexual
abuse is…

Marginality and Coping: A Communal Contextual Narrative Approach to Pastoral Care with Korean American Christians.

▼ Focusing on Korean American experiences of racism, sexism, and intergenerational conflicts related to the acculturation process, this dissertation examines the social reality of marginality and constructs a communal contextual narrative approach to
pastoral care. Current approaches to
pastoral care in the Korean American church encourage a deferring style of religious coping that maintains the status quo—the internalized status of marginality—without activating self agency for the fulfillment of one’s own selfhood within the communal life of religious communities. A communally grounded sense of self agency is described in terms of three aspects of Korean indigenous culture: 1)
uri (we-ness), 2)
jeong (communal empathic connection), and 3)
han (the experience of suffering from interdependent injustice).
A communal contextual narrative approach challenges the limitations of passive (deferring) ways of coping that disengage personal narratives from biblical narratives. This approach encourages a collaborative coping style, which emphasizes the partnership of human agency with divine agency in the context of the faith community. Asian (Korean) American feminist theologies, along with theologies of divine marginalization are used to describe a process of deconstructing dominant and destructive narratives and reconstructing alternative liberating narratives based on biblical stories about marginalization. In elaborating how to implement this model of
pastoral care, this dissertation draws upon 1) narrative
therapy approaches developed by White (1990, 2007) and other narrative therapists; 2) the “biblical narrative model” developed by Wimberly (1994, 2003, and 2008); and 3) the indigenous practice of
han-pu-ri as a process of change. Four steps are outlined: 1) evoking sacredness, 2) naming and externalizing the problem, 3) re-authoring one’s story, and 4) re-membering and reconnecting with the community and God.
Finally, this dissertation proposes a vision of the Korean American church as an
Uri community that continues to weave the human narratives with biblical narratives, in which person, community, and God collaborate as partners for authoring life-giving stories that reflect the full potentiality of life. By reframing negative experiences of marginalization within the larger narratives of both the
Uri community and biblical narratives of marginalization, this dissertation challenges Korean immigrants and their families to move from social marginality defined by oppressive narratives to authentic marginality defined by preferred narratives about God.

▼ The area of Social Assistance has been experiencing a progress towards a closer relationship with the assumptions of the Social Assistance System (SUAS). One of the possibilities for the progress may be the Community Therapy (TC), which functions as a tool to assist in the care of others. This research investigates the transformations, from various community therapy circles, that we promoted along with these people from the Bolsa Família Program. These people come daily to the CRAS/CREAS Gama, Administrative City of Brasilia, searching for a better understanding of themselves and others, believing in the potential of transformation of each person. Community Therapy has interacted with Ethics, Resilience and Pastoral Counseling, proposals that help them improve and change their self-esteem, transforming people's daily lives. The community bond, the friendship and the presence of resilience make a reconstruction of lost links possible. Some of such transformation we have achieved with our work. We hope that this study encourages further investigations.

A Terapia Comunitária vem interagindo

▼ Violent traumatic events impact communities and demand ministerial responses that are not only pastoral in nature but also prophetic, challenging institutional and sociocultural roots of violence through vision and analysis. There is a noticeable gap in qualitative studies of the prophetic pastoral practices of organized trauma response ministries in addressing violence. This dissertation addresses this gap through qualitative case studies of two trauma response ministries operating in diverse cultural contexts.
The dissertation forges a beginning constructive practical theology of trauma from the voices, experiences, and practices of survivors and their trauma response ministry providers, lifting up the need for an intercultural approach and examining the results for untapped theological resources for constructive practical theologies of trauma. By integrating trauma studies into lived religion approaches, this dissertation conceptualizes survivors' use of material objects, rituals, and surroundings to enact a 'theopoetics of material religion.' This theopoetics captures the constructive theological significance of survivors' use of material objects, rituals, and surroundings for prophetic and performative testimony and witness.
The introduction and chapter one make the case that addressing the problem of violent trauma in the American context calls for an approach rooted in prophetic pastoral care practices, one that is attentive to the particular contextual realities and resources of communities living in the aftermath of trauma. Using a lived religion methodological approach enhanced by trauma studies and a theopoetics of material religion, chapter two presents a case study of an inner-city lay-led trauma response ministry that serves family survivors of homicide. Chapter three presents a case study of a denominational-based trauma response ministry's services to a suburban congregation following a gun assault. Chapter four illustrates the theological themes witnessed in each case study and places these in intercultural dialogue. The final chapter engages current constructive theologies of trauma and brings the insights of the case studies to bear on interpretations of theology in the aftermath of trauma. The dissertation begins to forge of a constructive practical theology of trauma and concludes with strategic recommendations for constructive practical theologians, pastoral care providers, and social and ecclesial structures.

This research evaluates the work of the Hospital Chaplaincy Illness Therapy. And the main focus is to analyze the influence and validity of the work of a chaplain in a hospital. In this research we make checks historical, theological, and pragmatic, and work development is sought to prove the hypothesis that the chaplaincy has always been, always will be relevant today in the context Hospital. The Chaplaincy service in scope, validity and importance is for a hospital as well as spirituality and religion is for humans. The path crosses the findings essentially a historical road from its genesis to its rules and extensive practice today. Does the person of God and the human person and in this regard God and Man, one sees that this needs to encounter with the sacred, and this need is analyzed within the hospital environment and this we find the Chaplaincy, which is called: Hospital Chaplaincy, from being considered a legal institution. The chaplaincy in a hospital is largely a social tool, as had reached the sick, their families and staff throughout the hospital. Finally, the path taken by this researcher is part of their professional practice as pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil.

▼ This thesis focuses on personal tutoring and pastoral support and guidance in a Further Education College. In this study, I explore the relational dynamics and social construction of the role of the personal tutor and reveal alternative discourses concerned with the emergence of the ‘therapeutic’ in the sector. Within the current audit culture of Further Education, new pedagogies of practice are emerging in response to Government policy, regulation and control and I illuminate their impact upon the sector, noting the sites of conflicts for personal tutors engaged in the labour process as they mediate the ‘emotional learning agenda’. The research includes interview data from twenty personal tutors and nine senior managers (senior tutors), and also includes data from two focus groups. The twenty personal tutors are representative of a breadth of courses across the institution from Foundation Degree to Special Needs, teaching a range of subjects from Marine Science to Performing Arts. The focus groups represent new full-time and part–time trainees to the profession attending the Initial Teacher Training Course. The data was collected over two years from 2006, in a Further Education College in the South West of England called ‘Pendene’. Policy documents including Ofsted reports were also incorporated into the study as secondary data sources. In this research, I reveal that personal tutors at Pendene College were investing time and energy in the emotional lives of their students, in response to policy and practices related to retention and achievement which challenges the arguments from Ecclestone (2004), Furedi (2003) and Ecclestone and Hayes (2009) concerned with the expansion of therapy culture in Further Education. This significantly suggests a paradigmatic shift in the culture of pastoral care within the post-compulsory sector, one driven by the economics of retention. However, not all students were engaged in pastoral support and guidance and this study reveals a group labelled the ‘untutored’ who emerge as separate from those ‘needy’ students whom personal tutors support. Personal tutors were also ‘actors’ taking on different roles and analysing this process illuminated their propensity for engagement in emotional labour and labour processes within the hegemonic culture of Further Education.

▼ A
pastoral Gestalt therapeutic intervention model was developed, implemented and
evaluated in the research to facilitate the therapeutic process from guilt and shame to
forgiveness. Guilt and shame can be traumatic self-conscious experiences which has
an impact on abused late adolescent's physical, psychological, social, emotional, moral
and religious development. It can determine the adolescent's behavior, their views of
themselves and their interpersonal relationships. Guilt and shame arouses feelings of
helplessness, anger, blame, bitterness and the need for retaliation, while forgiveness
can relieve these impulses effectively and be utilized as a source for a recovering
experience.
In designing the intervention model, the researcher studied adolescents' emotional
experience, behaviour and management of guilt, shame and forgiveness from a
pastoral base theory within the Gestalt therapeutic perspective. The formation of the
paradigm is based on a multidisciplinary approach which takes place on the interface
between
pastoral counselling and Gestalt
therapy without the unique content and
character of
pastoral care or the Gestalt
therapy being lost. By utilizing the intervention
model abused late adolescents are assisted with the necessary awareness to focus on
what is on their foreground in order to reach self-regulation of their emotional
experience. The intervention model was developed as a prototype intervention based
on Enright's forgiveness process model and components of both the
pastoral base
theory and the Gestalt therapeutic process of the Schoeman working model.
The research was performed by using a mixed qualitative-quantitative approach. The
qualitative approach entails the use of applied intervention in intervention research
while the quantitative approach consists of measuring the respondents' experiences of
guilt, shame and forgiveness, using three standardized rating scales before and after
intervention. The researcher applied the intervention research design in a multiple
case study with five respondents and a single-system design was incorporated into the
intervention research. The measurement of respondents' experiences of guilt, shame
and forgiveness after intervention, determined whether the changes took effect,
attributable to their participation in the intervention. Following the research findings the
conclusion was made that the
pastoral Gestalt therapeutic intervention model can be
used effectively to guide abused late adolescents who experience guilt and shame, to

The Church is called to care for these children in the form of
pastoral care. In practise children are often neglected and do not receive the care that they are entiteld to. One of the main reasons is because pastors and religious workers use an intervention method that depends mainly on the verbal skills of the child.
The six steps of intervention research was used to develop a
pastoral model in the form of course. The innitial intervention model was tested in case studies and refined. The focus of this model is to use play as a mode of intervention from a Gestalt approach.
The course will enable pastors and religious workers to care for children more effectively. The main concepts of the research forms the basis of this model with practical excercises.

▼ Children detained in juvenile detention centers in the United States are a unique population.
They are neither incarcerated, nor are they free to live in society. Although some popular literature does exist on juvenile detention, such literature is minimal. Further, there are few research studies on this population in any field of inquiry. Indeed the entire
subject of juvenile detention has been largely overlooked by research scientists, as well as theologians.
The focus of this empirical study is the theology and spirituality of children in a single juvenile detention center in New Jersey, US. Currently, there are no studies on this topic. This study begins to address that void and represents the first theological research of its kind on this population. The methodological approach of the thesis is multi-disciplinary. While the study addresses theology and spirituality as separate categories, it also integrates theology with research in psychology and clinical mental health.
The project itself consists of 200 individual, face-to-face interviews with male juvenile residents detained in the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center, Toms River, New Jersey, US. An original questionnaire has been developed by the author as a research tool.
This empirical research adds to the academic literature on children in juvenile detention centers in the United States and recommends ways that staff may communicate with children to begin a theological dialogue. Further, this thesis offers a specific methodology and research tool to be duplicated for use in other juvenile detention centers toward working with children in a concrete, evidence-based, spiritual context.
v
This study also includes a chapter on the evolution of the author’s spirituality and theology in the course of the project and attempts to locate the self of the researcher within the study.
Finally, this thesis presents an outline for a new hermeneutic in working with children in a juvenile detention setting. This new approach represents a practical step toward bridging an existing gap between a stated need for a new hermeneutic for working with children in theological literature and its inception.

▼ As a minister who is deeply involved in Christian counselling I am constantly reminded just how many problems marriages are facing today. There is no question that the failure of this fundamental relationship has unquantifiable devastating results in the lives of couples, their children, and society as a whole. The more one works with people one realises that many couples in relationships are just hurting individuals in search of happiness and wholeness. Marriage provides the perfect relationship with elaborate promises and expectations of love and warmth, where all needs and dreams are to be met by the husband or wife. Sadly, however, as substantiated by divorce statistics, too many couples find this sacred space intended for love and fulfilment become the most vulnerable, unsafe space. As a minister searching for a systematic process to unravel this mystery of failed or failing marriages, I discovered a psycho-social model for
therapy, called Imago Relationship
Therapy (IRT), which not only produced excellent counselling results, but also seemed compatible with more theological approaches to couples
therapy. IRT unravels for me the “why” and gives me a quantifiable aspect to
my work which helps me grasp conceptually that which I instinctively have discovered and known theologically. I have embarked on this research, firstly, to understand the problem and the extent thereof facing our society; secondly to identify the strengths and shortcomings in
Pastoral Care theory and praxis (such
as the recurring problem of a realistic and workable Biblical counselling model for pastors), and thirdly to investigate the feasibility whether and how the Imago Relationship Theory could be integrated in
Pastoral Care praxis. The intention was, and remains, that after I have done this research to make it available, in appropriate format, to help pastors in assisting couples to avoid pitfalls in their marriages. In turn, it is hoped that this new found perspective would also benefit the pastor and his wife, since many pastors find their marriages also under strain.
Every pastor who works with the lives of congregants understands the volatility of relationships. This understanding has been built over long periods of time with them and he has witnessed how their lives have morphed under pressure due to problems that at times have been overwhelming. Sadly some of the pain is self-inflicted or has been inflicted upon them. As one delves into this
subject
matter one becomes aware of just how inadequately equipped some pastors really are and how important it is to equip them to effectively help others. I chose to examine Imago Relationship
Therapy (IRT), knowing its efficacy, and wondered how this would fit into a Pneumatological counselling model. Various practical theologians (such as DJ Louw and JJ Rebel) have recently been discovering Pneumatology – the reflection on the work of the Holy Spirit, through whom the work of God the Father and God the Son is being applied and appropriated
in the person, in the congregation, and in the…

▼ The thesis describes the use of stories and metaphors in
pastoral counseling with orphans and
vulnerable children (future: OVC) affected by HIV and AIDS in Mbeya.. It is a narrative approach
study which examines and explores stories and other metaphors for the children’s resilience. A
narrative approach helps
pastoral counselors to use stories and metaphors such as life stories, proverbs,
biblical narratives, plays, art, songs, riddles, poems, symbols and images for the healing and coping
mechanism with OVC. The OVC in the midst of challenges of HIV and AIDS crisis can find a healing
and coping mechanism in Mbeya. A narrative approach with the use of stories and metaphors in
pastoral counseling and in practical theology can be used and applied in responding to issues
surrounding the OVC. It is an approach that can help the OVC find their resilience and grow into a
more meaningful life, the life of wholeness.
Methodologically, case studies, focus groups and interviews have been used to collect the data which
was analyzed and interpreted in detail to reach the objectives of the study. I explored and discussed in
detail the use of narratives, stories, and metaphors in case studies and focus groups with OVC in
Mbeya.
Finally, an integrative narrative model was established to build up a practical method for practical
theology and counseling in dealing with the challenges which the OVC are facing. The model came as
a result of the analysis and interpretation of the case studies, focus groups and interviews conducted in
the field research. It describes a life cycle of a person, the events and experiences one passes through,
which will ultimately help a person to grow and mature to become whole or an integrative being.

Die Kerk kan langs hierdie weg ook sy pastorate verantwoordelikheid teenoor kinders nakom.; One of the functions of the Church is to care for people. The children, however, are often neglected with more attention being paid to the adolescent and adult. Moreover, the verbal approach used when pastors work with children who
experience difficulties do not seem to address this fully. Play
therapy, on the other hand, appears to be a useful means of addressing this deficiency. It is often used in psychotherapy and social work and can be used to good effect in the caring of the Church for children. Play
therapy enables the pastor to fulfill the Church's obligation to care for children, without disregarding the unique character of
pastoral care and
pastoral counselling.

▼ The cultural paradigm shift from modernism to postmodernism offers challenges and opportunities to the church to develop
pastoral practises that address the changing needs of members of congregations.
In my research I follow a contextual approach to the study of theology. I describe the context of postmodernism and how the church manages its
pastoral practises in this context. The social construction discourse and narrative epistemology offer new perspectives on how appropriate
pastoral practises can be established within this context.
I research the possible ways in which the social construction discourse and narrative epistemology can contribute to three key areas of congregational
pastoral practices, namely preaching, group work and
pastoral visiting.
My research highlights the important contribution that members of a congregation can make in the process of constructing narrative
pastoral practises that will assist them to story their lives in the context of the Great Story of God. The fusion of the life stories of the faithful with the Great Story of God inspires them to describe their life stories in rich and more fulfilling ways.
In the process of this research, I endeavoured to make audible the input of as many of those that contributed to the construction of new narratiewe
pastoral practises. I have accordingly included their contribution more comprehensively than would normally be done.

▼ This research reports on narratives of people whose lives
had been infected and affected by the devastating disease -
HIV/AIDS. The core information, on which this study is based, comes
from experiences of those infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS as
well as from caregivers. It sweeps away statistics and places those
seeking to offer help in the midst of those seeking to be helped.
This mutual
subject-to-
subject relationship becomes the stage on
which research/
therapy, interviews and conversations are conducted.
This study therefore opts for an approach that is informed by the
experiences of those infected and/or affected and that addresses
the realities of their lives. Care and/or lack of care is
identified as a phenomenon, which is a direct reflection on how
therapy (research) is done by those providing the care and
perceived by those receiving the care. In the light of the
experiences (stories) shared by the companions, it became evident
that there is an existing need for alternative therapeutic ways,
which seeks to embrace a therapeutic approach, which will minimize
the external authority, or power of the therapist and at the same
time maximizes the authority of those seeking
therapy. The
Narrative approach is explored as a possible therapeutic approach
that could be used to empower those infected and/or affected
pastorally in a less¬knowledgeable fashion that is not-controlling,
not-manipulative, not¬-authoritative and not-knowing - as "guiding"
metaphor which will permit the infected and/or affected to use
their own thinking, understanding, emotions, creativity and own
resources in a way that best fits them in bringing meaning to their
own lives. The entire study seeks to emphasise the importance of a
therapeutic approach, which seeks to symbolically embrace the
"clouded" story of the infected and affected in a story of God's
hope. In this approach the therapist simply becomes aware of the
presence of a person(s) for whom the devastating reality of
HIV/AIDS is an every day reality. This research does not claim to
have the solutions or quick fix miracle answer to the complex
HIV/AIDS phenomenon, and it neither claims to have the power to
bring any neat conclusion to the HIV/AIDS story, but rather have
the potential to stimulate a new story of hope and purpose in the
lives of the infected and affected. This research emphasises a
position where the infected and affected can inhabit and lay claim
to the many possibilities of their own lives that lie beyond the
knowledge, assumptions, expectations, goals and understandings of
the therapist. A position in which the therapist simply becomes
available to talk, listen and support. A position that will empower
those infected and affected to tell: • the story of need as broadly
as possible, • the story of the past, • the future story in the
story of the past, • the reinterpreted story of the past, • the
imagined story of the future. (Muller 1999:84)

▼ This research reports on narratives of people whose
lives had been infected and affected by the devastating disease -

▼ The relationship between Psychology and Theology has become an issue of increasing
concern in recent years for the Christian community. With the growing complexities of
cultural differences, the moral decline of society and its drift away from a Christian
worldview, the pastoral ministry seems to be as challenging as ever.
The problem about the relationship between theology and psychology is that there is
growing confusion in today's Christian community about the best way to help people
overcome their personal problems of living. In this regard some scholars believe that
Christians should only submit to Biblical counselling, while others support psychotherapy, as
long as it is integrated with Biblical principles and has a firm Scriptural foundation.
In researching the literature on the subject, it was found that various theoretical models
have been defined and described as attempts to scientifically justify the union of the
above mentioned two points of view.
In this thesis the viewpoints of four prominent groups of scholars about the subject are
described and analysed in order to determine to what extent will it be possible to identify
common denominators amongst their different models and to eventually establish if it is
possible to formulate a synthesis about the commonalities so defined.
The integration models of the following four prominent groups of authors about the
subject were analysed: (1) Larry Crabb (1977); (2) William T. Kirwan (1993), (3) John D.
2
Carter & Bruce Narramore (1979) and (4) Eric L. Johnson & Stanton L. Jones, eds., (2000).
These scholar's contributions were chosen for analysis because, from the research about
the subject, it was found that these 4 groups of authors made some of the most
significant scientific contributions about the integration of theology with psychology.
Before attempting to formulate a pastoral paradigm out of a synthesis of the
contributions of the aforementioned scholars, it was fundamentally important to
distinguish between the 3 prominent views of man. Some scholars argue that man is a
monistic being, while others defend a dichotomous view of man as consisting of a body and
a soul. A third significant view describes man as consisting of three significant parts,
namely a body, a soul and a spirit.
In this thesis it was argued that the trichotomous view of man was the most correct way
of defining the fundamental composition of man.
According to the researcher an understanding of the trichotomous nature of man is
important as it serves as a theological basis for pastoral counselling in order to clearly
communicate the precise truths of the believer's union with Christ.
In the last part of the thesis a practical pastoral paradigm was proposed based on the
trichotomous view of man in which psychology and theology can be harmoniously integrated
by means of a meta-systemic approach. The first phase of the paradigm focused on a
model within which Psychotherapy can be applied while the second phase described
Spirituotherapy as a model…

▼ The purpose of this research is to examine the possibilities of the
Biblical narrative (Genesis 37·, 39-50 as the focus of this study) in
therapy with children. A practical, reformed view of humans has been
established, to give a clearer understanding of how Christian therapists
view a child in therapy. The specific role of the therapist in the use of
Narrative therapy was explored.
Narrative therapy can be approach in two different ways: the use of
the persons problem-oriented story, or the use of external narratives.
Both uses have been discussed, combined and illustrated through the
use of case studies. The story of Joseph (Genesis 37, 39-50) was
selected for use in this studie. It has been studied in a context of
Revelation history, while the case for the use of this narrative has
been argued. The main reason being that Joseph seems to be an
exceptional example of virtue for any person to follow.
On the strenth of this study the author wishes to make the conclusive
propositi·ons: Children with problems should not only be helped to
cope with their problems, but should also be taught to build a
relationship with God during the therapy proses. Since stories have
been used through the ages to convey a spesific message (also by
Jesus himself), this method could (and should) be employed while.
working with children. The Christian therapist is priviledged to have
the Word of God, written in narrative form, to utilize in practice.

This master dissertation is the first attempt to academically investigate Reinhold Ruthe’s shaping and influence on biblical therapeutical counseling in Germany. It explores how the Christian psychotherapist Reinhold Ruthe shaped German Protestant churches. Through his integrative and at the same time selective approach, Ruthe identifies insights, which he obtained from the individual psychology and other psychological schools, and makes them fruitful for Christian counseling. Such sources are presented. In order to better understand his person and his work, the dissertation examines Ruthe's biography, also giving insights on his historical context. This is enriched by an interview, which gives voice to Ruthe himself. An overview of his publications is also enhanced by the analysis of selected works. Besides his
work as an author, Ruthe shaped the practice of
pastoral care through his activities as teacher and counsellor and indirectly through his students. The dissertation presents through all this Reinhold Ruthe’s peculiar contribution for the laymen counseling and his efforts in the integration of psychology and

▼ This study explores the operations of Sesotho masculinity: its dominant ideas and practices and
their effects on Basotho women and men and this latter‟s resistance to a gender-ethical
consciousness gaining momentum in Lesotho. It challenges a deep running belief among the
Basotho that being born male necessarily means being born into a superior social position and
status that is naturally and divinely sanctioned. It investigates how the dominant postcolonial
discourse called sekoele (a return to the traditions of the ancestors) and the Christian churches‟
discourses of the “true”/“authentic” Christian life, framed by the classical biblical and
confessional dogmatic traditions, actually support and sustain this belief and so reinforce the
imbalance of power in favour of men in the order of gender relations in Lesotho. On the
contrary, through the principles of the contextual theologies of liberating praxis, social
construction theory, a narrative approach to
therapy, gender-ethical consciousness and
participatory approach, the study argues that masculinity and ways of being and thinking about
men are socially constructed through historical and cultural processes and practices. It is in these
processes and practices that Basotho men have been and continue to be advantaged and
privileged over women.
This study has challenged this situation by tracing the existence of alternative, more ethical ways
of being and thinking about men in those historical and cultural processes and practices; ways
which are more open to women and children and their wellbeing in the everyday life interactions.
In this way, the study argues for a gender-ethical consciousness, which, in particular, invites
Basotho men to engage in a reflection on their participation in a culture and practices which
oppress the other, especially women and children. It invites Basotho men to accountability and
responsibility. In this sense a gender-ethical consciousness is understood as watershed of
masculinity in Lesotho. The participation of a group of Basotho men who offered to reflect on
their relationship with the dominant masculinities, demonstrates how Basotho men are struggling
to transform yet they fill us with the hope that change is possible.

Symptoms are motoric and vocalic tics with possible comorbid symptoms such as attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression. It is frequent among South Africans and the pastor will probably be confronted with persons struggling with the syndrome. The best
therapy for Tourette Syndrome is medication in conjunction with behaviour and family
therapy administered by a multi-disciplinary team. Persons with Tourette Syndrome have problems maintaining relationships with God, themselves and others. The pastor therefore has a definite role to play in the team. Knowledge of the syndrome and its symptoms, and of
pastoral care are essential for succesful
pastoral counseling. A possible central theme of the syndrome is the loss
of control experienced by the person with the syndrome. The syndrome can become an excuse for negative and irresponsible behaviour and ethical confrontation may be necessary.
