An assessment of open plan and enclosed classroom listening environments for young children : part 2 - teachers' questionnaires – Chapter 7. General discussion and conclusions.

Open plan classrooms, where several class bases share the same space, have recently reemerged in Australian primary schools. This is due to a more child-centred teaching philosophy which focuses on group work, sharing resources, and the social development of the child. They also promote team-teaching and joint collaboration which is thought to facilitate a more cooperative and supportive teaching and learning atmosphere. However, because of the large number of children engaging in different activities and the lack of barriers between classes, these spaces are subject to high noise levels. Therefore, it is timely to conduct research in these classrooms to assess their appropriateness for 5-6-year-old Kindergarten children.

This thesis by publication is comprised of five studies that aim to comprehensively compare the listening environments of four different types of classrooms: an enclosed classroom with 25 children, a double classroom with 44 children, an untreated linear fully open plan triple classroom with 91 children, and a purpose-built semi-open plan Kindergarten-to-Year-6 classroom with 205 children. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the studies. Chapter 2 describes the first objective study which calculated and compared the noise levels, signal-to-noise ratios, speech transmission index scores, and reverberation times across classrooms. Chapter 3 describes the development of a new classroom speech perception task that can be conducted live and efficiently in real classroom listening environments. This speech perception task was used in the third study (Chapter 4) to objectively assess how the acoustics of the classrooms measured in the first study affect children’s speech perception accuracy and speed. Chapters 5 and 6 describe the subjective studies of this thesis which examined the children’s and teachers’ perceptions of their classroom listening environment via a questionnaire. Finally,Chapter 7 discusses the impact of these findings for each classroom, draws conclusions, and suggests future research directions.

In many countries people typically spend over 90 percent of their time indoors. Therefore, the quality of the indoor environment has a big influence on the health and wellbeing of people. Standards for thermal comfort state that 80 percent of the occupants need to express satisfaction with the thermal environment to be thermally comfortable. Research from the Center of Built Environment however shows that only 11 percent of the office buildings reach this mark. The uniform indoor climate where the conventional HVAC system operates between 22°C and 24°C don’t meet the preferences of most occupants. At the same time is it very energy consuming to keep the indoor temperature between this deadband and can a lot of energy be saved widening this deadband. A possible solution can be the so called personal comfort system, where the dead band of the office is widened and the occupant can control their own thermal environment at the desk with heaters and fans. Results into these systems show an increased level of comfort and productivity. The problem is that these systems rely solely on active systems. Therefore, the research question is: How can additional passive techniques contribute to the thermal sensation of an occupant of an individual comfort system suitable for use in an open plan office spaces? As literature shows, thermal sensation and comfort is related to the heat balance of the human body. Physical aspects and the thermal regulation system of the human body influence the heat balance. At the same time there are psychological influences. The most important aspects are expectations and knowledge. These aspects were combined to create several conceptual solutions. Extended research into the use of a heat reflection screen to redirect the radiational heat loss of the human body back to the human body was done. Calculations and simulations then showed a promising result for a neck radiation screen. There are a lot of people that experience a cold thermal sensation at the neck. Placing a heat reflection screen can increase the skin temperature with approximatly 1°C. Comparing these results with the just noticeable difference which is around 0.5 °C for the neck this 1°C difference will positively influence the thermal sensation of an occupant. Different materials were researched for their emissivity and reflectivity for far infrared radiation (wavelengths that the human body emits). However, these results came out inconclusive and need extended research. The gathered information was used to design a flexible heat reflection screen for the neck that can be applied to every office chair. The original conceptual ideas where used to design an evaporation panel for cooling that can be used in combination with fans that are normally used in personal comfort systems. It is suggested to also combine biorhythmic lighting with the settings for heating and cooling; providing cool light when feeling warm and warm light when feeling cold.

▼ In this study an attempt was made to consider the behaviour of students in a new open-plan High School as a specific example of an interaction between man and his environment. In the first two chapters a brief review was made of research and theories that were thought to be relevant to this. In the last part of the study a research project which involved a comparison of 'coping' and 'non-coping' students was described. The teaching environment in the chosen High School during the first term of 1976 appeared to be a 'Progressive - Open type' of teaching environment. After the first tern it changed and became increasingly more traditional. Significant differences in scholastic behaviour between the two groups of students at the end of the first term indicated that:- 1. The coping group tended to have a more internal locus of control than the non-coping group. 2. The students of the coping group tended to plan for professional careers whereas those of the non-coping group tended to plan for non-professional careers. 3. On the whole the coping group tended to have realistic career aims in terms of their general ability. (ii) If. The students of the coping group tended to have higher I.Q. scores than those of the non-coping group. There were no significant differences between the coping and non-coping groups in terms of their attitudes towards the High School nor in terms of the attitudes of their parents. Both groups of students tended to state that 'doing well at school' was important to them and to record positive or neutral attitudes towards the High School for both themselves and their parents. Significant differences in behaviour were found between 'internal' and 'external' students that support Rotter's theory regarding goal values. Internal students who planned for professional careers tended to be in the coping group whereas internal students who planned for non-professional careers tended to be in the non-coping group. In the case of the 'external' students no significant differences were found between the type of career aims and coning. The change to a more traditional type of teaching environment appeared to benefit the 'external' students. At the end of the third terra there was a significant increase in the numbers of 'external' students classified as coping, but in the case of the 'internal' students no significant increase was found.

Bakgrund: Tidigare forskning indikerar att höga ljud i öppna kontorslandskap har negativ inverkan på kontorsanställdas prestation och välmående på arbetet. Trots att flertalet studier har gjorts kring olika kontorsmiljöer finns inte mycket forskning om hur ljud i öppna kontorslandskap påverkar behovet av återhämtning efter arbetstid. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att undersöka i vilken utsträckning upplevelsen av höga ljudnivåer och störande ljud på arbetsplatsen har samband med behovet av återhämtning efter arbetstid, bland anställda som arbetar i öppna kontorslandskap. Metod: Metoden bestod av en kvantitativ enkätstudie av tvärsnittsdesign. Behovet av återhämtning mättes utifrån en kortversion av Need for Recovery (NFR) Scale. Ljudnivåer och ljudstörningar mättes utifrån formuläret Ljudstörningar och höga ljudnivåer i arbetsmiljön. Enkäten skickades ut till kontorsanställda på 16 olika arbetsplatser runtom i Sverige, varav sammanlagt 61 respondenter medverkade i studien. Resultat: En hierarkisk multipel regressionsanalys visade ett positivt samband mellan höga ljudnivåer, ljudstörningar och återhämtningsbehov. Ett signifikant samband (p < .05) kunde konstateras mellan ljudstörningar och återhämtning som var oberoende av ljudnivåer. Däremot påvisades inget signifikant samband mellan ljudnivåer och återhämtningsbehov oberoende av ljudstörningar. Slutsats: Resultatet indikerar att störande ljud i öppna kontorslandskap har betydande påverkan på behovet av återhämtning efter arbetstid. Även om inget signifikant samband mellan prediktorvariablerna och utfallsvariabeln kunde påvisas kan ljudnivåer ändå vara betydande för upplevelsen av störande ljud och behovet av återhämtning. För att kunna dra kausala slutsatser är fortsatt forskning genom prospektiva studier nödvändigt.

Background: Research indicates that open plan offices are accompanied by high noise levels which have a negative impact on performance and wellbeing at work. However, little is known about how noise levels and noise annoyance associate with need for recovery (NFR) among employees in open-plan offices. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is an association between experiences of high noise levels, noise annoyance and need for recovery among open-plan office workers. Method: The study was performed with a cross-sectional design. Need for recovery was measured with a short version Need for Recovery (NFR) Scale and noise levels and noise annoyance was measured with Noise Annoyance and High Noise Levels in Work Environments. The questionnaire was sent out to 16 workplaces in Sweden and contained responses from 61 employees. Entre les pratiques orientées principalement vers les destinataires de l’action sociale et les logiques gestionnaires qui tendent à rationaliser le ‘’travail social’’, cette thèse explore la diversité des configurations intermédiaires. A partir des accompagnements éducatifs menés par un service dit de ‘’milieu ouvert’’, nous analysons la multiplicité des arrangements entre les professionnels chargés de ces mesures de ‘’protection de l’enfance’’. Sans réduire notre champ d’observation aux seules interactions individuelles, nous étudions plus largement le rapport de cet ‘’îlotage d’intervention socio-éducative’’ avec son environnement institutionnel.Ceci nous amène à interroger le fonctionnement d’autres services ou dispositifs connexes et leurs rattachements organisationnels aux instances de tutelles. En nous appuyant sur diverses recherches produites sur cet objet, nous questionnons également les transformations en œuvre dans le ‘’travail social’’ contemporain. L’ensemble de cette démarche nous permet de considérer conjointement les modifications profondes des cadres d’actions des politiques sociales et leurs retentissements singuliers sur les pratiques professionnelles des travailleurs sociaux. Notre recherche contribue ainsi à situer plus précisément les endroits où se logent ces régulations, comment elles s’ancrent et ce qu’elles induisent. Cette exploration nous ouvre sur la compréhension de la complexité des intrications des dimensions individuelles et collectives en prises avec le traitement de la cohésion sociale.

In contrast to practices primarily oriented towards recipients of social action and management policies which tend to streamline “social work”, the present thesis investigates the diversity of intermediate configurations. Based on educational support delivered by an “open-environment” service, we assess the wide range of agreements between professionals entrusted with “child care” assignments. Beyond the observation of mere human interaction, we delve into the relationships between such a “socioeducational policing scheme” and its institutional background.This leads us to examine how other services or related schemes operate, and how they interlink with parent organizations. With the help of extensive research published on the subject, we also question the transformations currently at play in “social work”. As a result we survey deeply changing instances of social policy framework and how uniquely they affect social workers’ professional practices. Thereby we highlight where these regulations apply along with their generalization and inferences. This exploratory work paves the way for a better understanding of intricately linked individual and collective dimensions confronted with social cohesion management.

▼ This study discusses employees’ perception of a rather new and progressive office type, namely the Activity-based Flexible Office, the A-FO. Within this office type, the employee does not have a personal desk, but instead changes workspace depending on the task at hand. The aim of the study was to examine how employees perceive this type of office and their experiences of working within it. In previous research, a model has been created within this field as an attempt towards a theoretical framework, the A-FO-M. Whereas studying this model, we saw some notions not being thoroughly explored, although mentioned in other preceding research. Thus, the need of exploring these aspects further felt vital and therefore, we combined the A-FO-M with other preceding research and created a synthesis with a set off our themes. A qualitative method was chosen and furthermore, a phenomenological approach. This approach suggests examining a certain phenomena, the A-FO in this case, based on the experiences and perceptions of an individual, the employee. Interviews were implemented on a specific company to succeed in reaching our aim. The six interviews completed gave us the empirical results we needed to attain an analysis and thereafter, conclusions. Overall, our findings correspond with the presumptions of the A-FO-M. However, due to Klarna having a certain structure, somewhat differing from the traditional A-FO, the results were contradicting in some cases. The majority of the respondents felt they were able to perform their task without major problems. Some respondents felt that the office made them more open, while others did not feel any impact on their persona in relation to the A-FOs features. Our findings support that the A-FO is a very sociable office type, whereas you constantly meet and interact with people, both known and unknown to you. The respondents appreciate that there is little distance between them and their managers. Additionally, it is found that managers within A-FOs need to have high trust in their employees. Conclusively, some results may be somewhat dependent on the individual and their preferences.

▼ Open Educational Resources (OER) have created opportunities for learners around the world. Previous research investigated different OER development models for higher educational institutions and other educational communities. However, maintaining sustainability remains the main challenge of OER projects, as there is a high demand on raising awareness of the value of OER in higher education, as well as the need for expanding a participation base in the OER development process and improving the quality of OER. As a response to these challenges, the research documented in this thesis presents a new OER development model that establishes communities of practices around OER in higher educational institutions, where the knowledge production that takes place inside classrooms provides sustainable resources for the OER development process. OER literature also shows initiatives on engaging students in the OER development process, however, there is a lack of rigor research that shows the principles of engaging students in this process. Hence, this study is focused on identifying the design principles of the sustainable OER development model that engages students in generating OER. The model was designed to establish communities of practice of students and teachers to work collaboratively in generating learning resources. In the context of computing and information technology studies for undergraduate learning environments, students generate a surplus of projects in different study units with some projects repurposed, however, a surplus of projects that are generated on every academic semester are rarely tapped into. This abundance of knowledge production is described as ‘cognitive surplus’ and tapping into it can maximise the value of these projects. Therefore, the proposed OER development model taps into the cognitive surplus of student-generated content, where instead of generating summaries and portfolios, students create learning resources based on the unit topics using content authoring software tools. In this model, teachers work as facilitators and co-creators, providing evaluation of learning resources in order to be published as OER. To engage students in generating learning resources for OER, the learning assessment approach was taken from assessing student projects on reproducing information to a new level where students engaged in structuring, designing, collecting and evaluating content for generating learning resources which was then shared online as OER. These activities maximised students’ responsibilities, because sharing work online motivated them to improve the quality of the learning content. ▼ The study showed that social and economic service infrastructure development since the arrival of the 2000s has not shown significant improvement. Accesses to health, education, and safe drinking water in the Qeto re-settlement, even, in comparison with the adjacent local and the1980 re-settlers’ kebeles is very low. Veterinary clinics and agricultural input services are not put in place, even if they are highly required. Increased competition over the utilization of social (health and educational) and economic (road and transport) service infrastructures between the recent re-settlers and the 1980s was noted. This could lead to overcrowded ness; deterioration of facilities, and inefficient utilization of resources. Contrary to the resettlement design document, the study showed that majority of the 2000s re-settlers was not landless farmers. Re-settlers were deployed to the study area without making comprehensive feasibility study and detailed soil study based on the assumption that says there is considerable amount of land in South and South West of the Country, which has intensified the land shortage. The average land holding size of peasants in the study area being 0.95 ha in Gawo Dalle and 1.2 ha in Hawa Welel, where already about 28% of the total local peasants population were landless, the re-settlement pogrom’s site selection lacks rationality. Farmlands were taken from the 1980s settlers in mender 21 and given to the 2004 re-settlers, and from locals (in Mucho, Tulama, Arabshi and Arere Kebles ) allotted to Gudina Mucho, Tulama and Village 18 settlers, without compensation, which ended up with clashes between re-settlers and locals, where serious injuries from locals as well as re-settlers, burning of houses, grains and grain stores of the hosts encountered though both the re-settlers and the host are from the same region and the majority belonging to the same ethnic group, the Oromos, implying that unless there is adequate resource to satisfy both the host and the guest, resettlement program cannot integrate locals with settlers only by being intra regional. All settlement batches in the study area were found to have exerted destructive effects on natural environment in the study area. Big trees in crop field, forest covers and riverine belts were severely reduced. On the other hand, no significant tree plantation was done to replace the losses. Social and economic relations of varying extents were found to exist between locals and re-settlers and also among re-settlers themselves. The 2003 and 2004 re-settlers’ fought over land resource with locals at four sites (kebeles), The study showed that crop production is the main source of income in the study area but agriculture is not intensified; And, most settlers could not obtain sufficient yield after the harvest of their first seasons' cultivation, neglecting the complexity of resettlement program, the design document, is too much ambitious in demanding the re- settlers to become self sufficient with food right after the first harvest. ▼ Introduction: A wide variety of treatment modalities have been employed over the years to treat anterior open bite (AOB) in adults, but there is little reliable evidence to support the primacy of any particular method. Additionally, we know very little about how patient factors affect clinical decision making for adult AOB. The purpose of this study is to explore how practitioner, patient, and dentofacial characteristics are associated with treatment decisions in adult AOB treatment across the United States. Methods: Study participants were recruited from the practices of National Dental Practice-based Research Network dentists. Participants consisted of practitioners and their adult patients in active treatment for AOB that met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Practitioners completed questionnaires including questions about demographics, preferred techniques for treating open-bites, and study patient dentofacial characteristics. Patients were given a questionnaire that asked about chief complaints, treatment goals and expectations, and reasons for selecting a treatment plan. Initial pre-treatment cephalograms were collected for each patient and were traced to obtain patient dentofacial characteristics. The association of each of the dentofacial, patient, and practitioner characteristics with different treatment recommendations were ascertained using Chi-square tests for categorical variables. For patient cephalometric variables (including OB, SN-MP, ANB), ANOVA was performed. For the dentofacial domain, logistic regression analyzed the dichotomous outcome of surgery most recommended treatment plan vs. no surgery. Results: A total of 68 practitioners and 199 adult patients participated in the investigation. A statistically significant mean difference was detected among practitioners prescribing TADs based on where they attended dental school (36% foreign trained recommend TADs often vs. 5% US trained, p=0.002) and based on their race (5% Caucasian providers “often prescribe” TADs, while 24% of Asian practitioners “often prescribe”; p=0.03). Patient acceptance was not associated with age or education level but was influenced by insurance coverage. When a patient did not have medical insurance that covered surgical costs, the acceptance rate for a surgical plan was much lower (47.7%) than when they did have coverage for the procedure (78.6%, p=0.009). Mandibular plane angle, initial overbite, and molar classification were all independently associated with a surgical recommendation. Conclusions: This study found several interesting associations between practitioner, patient, and dentofacial characteristics and treatment recommendations. ▼ Employees within open-plan offices are at greater risk of experiencing anxiety in comparison to employees within cell offices. Organizational Behavior studies overlook why some employees within open-plan offices are more vulnerable of experiencing anxiety than others. This thesis addresses calls for richer recounts of the variation of employees’ experiences of anxiety within open-plan offices. Specifically, this thesis investigates two research questions: what are the different ways employees understand their experiences of anxiety within open-plan offices? and how are employees’ understandings of experiencing anxiety related to the ways they experience anxiety within open-plan offices? From an interpretative paradigm, this study adopted a phenomenography approach to identify a variation of employees’ understandings of their experiences of anxiety within open-plan offices. This study drew on the Personal Construct Theory (PCT) to explain how individuals can vary in their understandings of experiencing anxiety. Data was derived from 19 semi-structured interviews and observations of employees’ experiences across three open-plan offices. Data was analyzed using Sandberg (2000)’s phenomenography approach. Five understandings of experiencing anxiety within open-plan offices were identified. Employees who experience anxiety as helplessness feel stuck when experiencing anxiety. Employees who experience anxiety as hurt feel discomfort. Employees who experience anxiety as a vulnerability perceive anxiety is a weakness. Employees who experience anxiety as a problem to be solved express confidence in their ability to resolve anxiety. Employees who experience anxiety as stimulating self-development perceive anxiety as an opportunity for personal growth. Major findings postulate that employees who experience anxiety as helplessness, hurt and a vulnerability are prone to maladaptive experiences of anxiety. Maladaptive experiences occur when anxiety interferes with one’s life in a negative manner. Employees who experience anxiety as a problem to be solved and stimulating self-development are prone to adaptive experiences of anxiety. Adaptive experiences occur when people are motivated to overcome anxiety. These understandings may underpin employees’ ways of experiencing anxiety within the open-plan offices. Employees’ understandings of experiencing anxiety promoted and inhibited specific ways of experiencing anxiety. Employees who experience anxiety as helplessness, hurt and a vulnerability promoted ways that emphasized negative aspects of anxiety. These understandings inhibited ways of experiencing anxiety that led to adaptive experiences of anxiety.
