▼ Every ring has both left and right modules. In the theory of nearrings, only right modules are usually considered for left nearrings. The purpose of this report is to promote the study of an alternative type of nearring module. For left nearrings, these unusual modules are left modules. There are three reasons for studying left modules for left nearrings. These unusual nearring modules add an element of symmetry to the theory of nearrings. At the same time, comparing left and right modules of a left nearring illustrates how the theory of nearrings is distinct from ring theory. Finally, with two types of nearring modules, it is possible to carry over to nearring theory more concepts from ring theory; for example, duals of modules and bimodules. This report is an attempt to show that these reasons are valid. The first chapter is devoted to producing a well-reasoned definition for the unusual type of nearring module. It begins with a careful presentation of background material on nearrings, rings, and ring modules. This material is used to motivate the definitions for nearring modules, which are introduced in the third section. The second chapter is concerned with showing that the unusual type of nearring module can fit into the theory of nearrings. In the first section, several papers relevant to the study of these modules are summarized. The work of A. Frohlich on free additions is of primary importance. General construction methods for both types of nearring modules are then described. Finally, some general properties of left modules of left nearrings are examined. Examples of left modules for left nearrings are presented in the third chapter. First, the general constructions of the second chapter are applied in some particular cases. This leads naturally to structures that are analogous to bimodules and structures analogous to dual modules for ring modules. Here, free additions have a special role. Several dual nearring modules are examined in detail. The information needed to construct many more examples of nearring modules of the unusual type is also presented. Only small cyclic groups are used for these examples.

In this thesis a connection between triply factorised groups and nearrings is investigated. A group G is called triply factorised by its subgroups A, B, and M, if G = AM = BM = AB, where M is normal in G and the intersection of A and B with M is trivial. There is a well-known connection between triply factorised groups and radical rings. If the adjoint group of a radical ring operates on its additive group, the semidirect product of those two groups is triply factorised. On the other hand, if G = AM = BM = AB is a triply factorised group with abelian subgroups A, B, and M, G can be constructed from a suitable radical ring, if the intersection of A and B is trivial. In these triply factorised groups the normal subgroup M is always abelian. In this thesis the construction of triply factorised groups is generalised using nearrings instead of radical rings. Nearrings are a generalisation of rings in the sense that their additive groups need not be abelian and only one distributive law holds. Furthermore, it is shown that every triply factorised group G = AM = BM = AB can be constructed from a nearring if A and B intersect trivially. Moreover, the structure of nearrings is investigated in detail. Especially local nearrings are investigated, since they are important for the construction of triply factorised groups. Given an arbitrary p-group N, a method to construct a local nearring is presented, such that the triply factorised group constructed from this nearring contains N as a subgroup of the normal subgroup M. Finally all local nearrings with dihedral groups of units are classified. It turns out that these nearrings are always finite and their order does not exceed 16.

In dieser Arbeit wird eine Verbindung zwischen dreifach faktorisierten Gruppen und Fastringen untersucht. Eine Gruppe G heißt dreifach faktorisiert durch ihre Untergruppen A, B und M, wenn G = AM = BM = AB ist, wobei M ein Normalteiler von G und der Schnitt von A bzw. B mit M trivial ist. Es gibt eine bekannte Verbindung zwischen dreifach faktorisierten Gruppen und radikalen Ringen. Läßt man die adjungierte Gruppe eines radikalen Ringes auf der additiven Gruppe operieren, so ist das semidirekte Produkt der beiden Gruppen dreifach faktorisiert. Andererseits läßt sich jede dreifach faktorisierte Gruppe G = AM = BM = AB mit abelschen Untergruppen A, B und M aus einem radikalen Ring konstruieren, wenn A und B trivialen Schnitt haben. In diesen dreifach faktorisierten Gruppen ist der Normalteiler M stets abelsch. ▼ A Prüfer domain is defined as an integral domain for which each nonzero finitely generated ideal is invertible or, equivalently, projective. In general, if R is a domain, we have the following equivalent statements: (i) R is semihereditary (see §2.6 for the definition). (ii) w.gl.dim(R) ≤ 1 (see §2.5 for the definition). (iii) R_m is a chain domain for every 𝔪 ∈ Max(R) (see §1.2, §1.3 for definitions). (iv) R is a Gaussian domain (see §3.1 for the definition). (v) R is a Prüfer domain. The definition of each class of ring featured in (i)–(v) can be extended to commutative rings which are not necessarily integral domains, i.e., which may have zero-divisors. However, there are examples showing that no two of (i)–(v) are equivalent in this more general setting. In fact we have strict implications R is semihereditary ⇒ w.gl.dim(R) ≤ 1 ⇒ R_m is a chain ring for every maximal ideal 𝔪 of R ⇒ R is a Gaussian ring ⇒ (v) R is a Prüfer ring. We concentrate our studies on the weak global dimension of Gaussian rings. The authors of [BaGl] proposed a conjecture that there were only three possibilities for the weak global dimension of a Gaussian ring, namely 0, 1 or ∞. We follow the authors of [DT] by referring to this as the Bazzoni–Glaz Conjecture. In [Gl2, Theorem 2.2], it is shown that if the Gaussian ring R is a reduced ring (i.e., R is a ring for which the zero element is the only nilpotent element) then R has weak global dimension at most 1, verifying the Conjecture in this case. The case of non-reduced Gaussian rings is given a great deal of attention in the 2011 preprint [DT]. The authors of [DT] prove the Conjecture is true using a number of concepts from homological algebra. We give details for some of these results and refer to articles and books for others. The proof in [DT] is quite long, involving several reduction steps to reach the final outcome. In the Chapter 1 we introduce some well-established results from the ideal theory of commutative rings. For the most part, we will skip the proofs of these results and give references for them to the reader. This chapter is very important for the following chapters. We then look at some homological algebra definitions, results and methods in Chapter 2. In particular, this chapter will look at the weak global dimension of a ring R. The third chapter concentrates on the ideal structure of Gaussian rings, especially local Gaussian rings, detailing general properties of their internal structure. Finally, in Chapter 4, we give a detailed proof of the Bazzoni–Glaz Conjecture. This final lengthy chapter considers an all-inclusive number of cases of Gaussian rings and shows that the conjecture holds for every case. Advisors/Committee Members: Clark, John (advisor).

Οι αντιμεταθετικοί δακτύλιοι έχουν την προέλευσή τους από τη θεωρία αριθμών και από την αλγεβρική γεωμετρία στον 19ο αιώνα. Σήμερα είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντικοί και έχουν ενδιαφέρουσα επίδραση στην αλγεβρική γεωμετρία και στην θεωρία αριθμών, χρησιμοποιώντας μεθόδους αντιμεταθετικής άλγεβρας. Εδώ περιγράφουμε τις βασικές μεθόδους και κάνουμε τα πρώτα βήματα σε αυτό το θέμα. Στο εξής όλοι οι δακτύλιοι θα είναι αντιμεταθετικοί, εκτός αν θεωρήσουμε κάτι άλλο. Το κεντρικό θέμα της αξιωματικής ανάπτυξης της γραμμικής άλγεβρας είναι ένας διανυσματικός χώρος επί ενός σώματος. Η αξιωματοποίηση της γραμμικής άλγεβρας, η οποία επιτεύχθηκε το 1920, μορφοποιήθηκε σε μια μεγάλη έκταση, από την επιθυμία να εισάγουμε γεωμετρικές έννοιες στη μελέτη συγκεκριμένων κλάσεων των συναρτήσεων στην ανάλυση. Κατ’ αρχάς, ασχοληθήκαμε αποκλειστικά με τους διανυσματικούς χώρους των πραγματικών αριθμών ή των μιγαδικών αριθμών. Η έννοια ενός module είναι μια άμεση γενίκευση ενός διανυσματικού χώρου. Η γενίκευση αυτή επιτυγχάνεται απλά αντικαθιστώντας το σώμα των συντελεστών διά ενός δακτυλίου. Ο ευκολότερος τρόπος για να ορίσουμε ένα module μπορούμε να πούμε ότι είναι ένα αλγεβρικό σύστημα το οποίο ικανοποιεί τα ίδια αξιώματα όπως ένας διανυσματικός χώρος εκτός του ότι οι συντελεστές ανήκουν σ’ ένα δακτύλιο R με μονάδα αντί ενός σώματος F. Αυτή η φαινομενικά σεμνή γενίκευση οδηγεί σε μια αλγεβρική δομή η οποία είναι μεγίστης σημασίας. Ιστορικά ο πρώτος δακτύλιος που μελετήθηκε ήταν ο δακτύλιος ℤ των ακεραίων, ο όρος “δακτύλιος” πρωτοχρησιμοποιήθηκε από τον Hilbert (1897) στο “Zahlbericht” του για έναν δακτύλιο αλγεβρικών ακεραίων. Στο ℤ κάθε δακτύλιος είναι κύριος. Στην πραγματικότητα τα ιδεώδη είχαν πρώτα εισαχθεί (από Kummer) ως “ιδεώδεις αριθμοί” στους δακτυλίους αλγεβρικών ακεραίων οι οποίοι εστερούντο μοναδικής παραγοντοντοποίησης (unique factorization). Στο ℤ μπορούμε από δύο αριθμούς a,b να ορίσουμε τον μέγιστο κοινό διαιρέτη (ΜΚΔ) αυτών, (a,b), το γινόμενό τους ab και το ελάχιστο κοινό πολλαπλάσιο (ΕΚΠ) αυτών, [a,b]. Commutative ring has its origins in number theory its origins in number theory and algebraic geometry in the 19th century. Today it is of particular importance in algebraic geometry, and there has been an interesting interaction of algebraic geometry and number theory, using the methods of commutative algebra.
