▼ A handling quality investigation was performed on the swept gull-wing configuration. The swept gull-wing configuration is tailless and has a wing with a transition in the sweep and dihedral angle. An example of this type of aircraft is the Exulans. This aircraft is currently under development at the University of Pretoria. The handling quality study was focussed on pitch axis dynamics. The Exulans is a research testbed that will be used to investigate the swept gull-wing configuration and its special controls by means of full-scale flight testing. Variable wing sweep, twisting elevons and winglets will be investigated as means of control. These control devices are configured in such a way as to have minimum impact on the performance of the aircraft. The handling qualities of the swept gull-wing configuration have to be acceptable while using these different control strategies. The study was launched to investigate whether a gull-wing configuration aircraft will have satisfactory handling qualities at CG positions associated with the most favourable aerodynamic performance. There is an aerodynamic performance gain in designing an aircraft so that the CG falls on the so-called `E-point'. The E-point is the centre of pressure for an elliptical circulation distribution. An elliptical circulation distribution is associated with the highest Oswald efficiency for an aircraft. Time domain simulation techniques and frequency domain analysis techniques were used to analyse the handling qualities of the gull-wing configuration. The C-star criterion was used to analyse handling qualities with time domain simulation data as input. Comparative time domain simulations were performed between the Exulans and other aircraft to compare handling qualities. Eigenvalue analysis was used together with the thumbprint criterion to investigate inherent gull-wing airframe dynamics. The Shomber-Gertsen and Military Specification 8785 criteria were also used for the same purpose. The Neal-Smith method was used to investigate the effect of control authority on handling qualities and the effect of a pilot. The Monnich and Dalldorff criterion was used to evaluate gust handling qualities. An analysis chart by Fremaux and Vairo was used to evaluate the tumbling susceptibility of the gull-wing configuration. The pitch handling quality investigation shows sufficient promise that the swept gull-wing configuration will have acceptable handling qualities with the CG placed at positions associated with optimised aerodynamic performance. Analysis showed that the swept gull-wing configuration is potentially prone to tumbling. With low static margins, the configuration should exhibit improved handling qualities in gusty conditions when compared to existing tailless aircraft. It is recommended that a lateral handling quality study be performed before full scale flight testing commences on the Exulans. In addition, the possibility of wingtip stall must be investigated for the case of the swept gull-wing configuration. Advisors/Committee Members: Theron, Nicolaas J (advisor).

▼ One of the central issues in avian community ecology is an understanding of diversity patterns. The diversity of birds is especially important in endangered ecosystems because birds are good indicator species, and their presence could give conservation biologists and wildlife managers clues about the overall health of these systems. I studied the richness, abundance, and community composition of songbirds in two endangered ecosystems in temperate North America, riparian willow habitat of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), and in a restored tallgrass prairie in central Iowa, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge (Neal Smith NWR). I was especially interested in the habitat variables across time and space that influenced avian diversity patterns in these two areas. It was also my goal to offer wildlife biologists and managers advice on how to maximize diversity in both endangered ecosystems. Finally, I wanted to emphasize the importance of analyzing flyover data (swallows used as a case study) in order to elucidate further questions about diversity in avian community and landscape ecology. Vegetation height and density were two important variables that help predict avian diversity in both the GYE and at Neal Smith NWR. The age of a restored prairie habitat and litter depth was also very important in shaping the community composition of birds in tallgrass prairies. However, birds respond to different variables in their habitat based on the varying life history characteristics across species (e.g. nesting and foraging preferences), and this makes it difficult to offer general suggestions on how to maximize avian diversity in any natural system. I recommend offering a variety of habitat types and structures in order to attract as many species as possible. It is also critically important to consider the habitat needs of the most endangered birds in each of these ecosystems. Avian biologists should continue to study diversity trends in various systems, and come to a clearer understanding of the specific habitat variables that most influence the richness, abundance, and community composition of birds (habitat features, climate change, patch size etc.).

▼ Detailed geologic mapping (1:24,000 scale), structural and geochemical analyses, and integration of available geophysical and well-field data were utilized to assess the structural controls of the Neal Hot Springs geothermal field in eastern Oregon. The geothermal field lies within the intersection of two regional grabens, the middle-late Miocene, north-trending, Oregon-Idaho graben and younger late Miocene to Holocene, northwest-trending, western Snake River Plain graben. It is marked by Neal Hot Springs, which effuse from opaline sinter mounds just north of Bully Creek. Production and injection wells, with temperatures up to 142°C, intersect the Neal fault zone at depths of 680-1900 m and subsidiary faults within a relay ramp or step-over within the fault zone.The stratigraphy at Neal correlates with four regional packages. Basement rocks, discovered in one well, are granite, tentatively correlated with Jurassic Olds Ferry-Izee terrane. Nonconformably above is a thick package of middle Miocene Columbia River Basalt Group lavas, regionally known as the basalt of Malheur Gorge. Conformably above are middle to late Miocene Oregon-Idaho graben lavas, volcaniclastics, fluvial and lacustrine rocks. Overlying are the youngest rocks at Neal, which are late Miocene to Pliocene, western Snake River Plain lacustrine, fluvial, and volcaniclastic rocks. The structural framework at Neal is characterized by northerly to northwest-striking normal faults, including the geothermally related Neal fault zone. Stress inversion of kinematic data reveal an extensional stress regime, including an interpreted younger, southwest-trending (~243°), least principal stress and an older, west-trending (~265°) least principal stress. The geothermal field is bounded on the east by the Neal fault, a major, west-dipping, north-northwest-striking, steeply dipping normal to oblique-slip fault, along which geothermal fluids ascend, and on the west by the concealed north-northwest-striking, west-dipping Sugarloaf Butte fault. The Neal fault zone can be modeled into two structural settings: an interpreted older, left-stepping, normal-slip fault zone and a younger, oblique sinistral-normal zone, suggested by the earlier west-trending and later southwest-trending extensional stress regimes. Recent sinistral-normal displacement may have generated a small pull-apart basin in the Neal area and facilitated development of the geothermal system. 'Hard-linkage' between the Neal and Sugarloaf Butte faults occurs through concealed, west-northwest-striking faults, including the Cottonwood Creek subvertical fault, along which lateral fluid-flow is likely. An inferred north-plunging fault intersection at the Neal Hot Springs likely controls the location of the hot springs and sinter terraces.Young structural features are evident at Neal. The Neal fault zone cuts Quaternary fans and late Miocene lower and upper Bully Creek Formation sedimentary rocks. Cette thèse porte sur la relation entre histoire et analyse dans les considérations de Hume et de Smith sur le progrès. Son objectif est double. En premier lieu, elle vise à montrer que ces deux auteurs écossais articulent une approche historique, dite conjecturale, avec une autre approche historique qui relève de leur analyse de l’émergence de la société civile. Tandis que Hume rassemble ces deux approches historiques distinctes dans sa philosophie politique, Smith fait émerger son analyse économique de sa philosophie politique, qui est une histoire conjecturale de la société civile. Selon les deux auteurs, le gouvernement naît d’une inégalité de richesse au sein de la société et son but principal est de sécuriser la propriété privée. L’analyse économique de la Richesse des Nations dérive de cette théorie du gouvernement et de la justice. En second lieu, ce travail a pour but de souligner que Smith donne un moindre rôle à l’histoire dans sa théorie économique que Hume. Les attitudes divergentes de Hume et Smith vis-à-vis du problème de la dette publique britannique en témoigne. Tandis que Hume met en avant le danger provenant de la politique belliqueuse de la Grande Bretagne en traçant un parallèle avec l’Empire romain, Smith privilégie les effets économiques de la dette, qui, malgré leur nocivité, sont compensés par l’épargne privée. Une telle comparaison explique l’émergence ultérieure de l’école classique qui privilégie une analyse économique purement théorique, dépourvue de contexte historique.

This dissertation examines the relationship between history and analysis in Hume’s and Smith's considerations on progress. Its objective is twofold. First, it aims to show that these two Scottish thinkers bring together an historical approach, i.e. conjectural history, with another historical approach stemming from their analysis of the rise of civil society. Hume conflates these two distinct historical approaches in his political philosophy, whereas Smith separates gradually his economic analysis of from his political philosophy ― which is a conjectural history of civil society. According to both of them, the government originates from the inequality of wealth within society and its main purpose is to secure private property. The economic analysis of the Wealth of Nations derives from this theory of government and justice. Secondly, this study aims to emphasize that Smith’s economic theory is less historical than Hume. This is illustrated by the difference between Hume’s and Smith’s stance on the problem of the British public debt. While Hume points out the danger proceeding from Great Britain's aggressive international politics ― by drawing a parallel with the Roman Empire ―, Smith brings to the fore the economic effects of public debt, which, despite their harmfulness, are offset by private savings. Such a comparison explains the subsequent emergence of the classical school which deploys a purely theoretical economic analysis that lacks historical context.

▼ The multi-faceted processes of globalization have been associated with the increasing interconnectedness of the world or the creation of a global village. These processes are, however, full of ambiguities in that they challenge human freedom, dignity, rule of law and democratic self-determination. Especially, economic globalization creates what Pheng Chea calls the “inhuman conditions’ that describe the defective features of human existence due to commodification, technology and totalitarian domination. In this condition of human existence, cosmopolitanism is being advocated as a practical consciousness of universal humanism and as a political project to regulate the dehumanizing effects of economic globalization. The thesis explores and analyzes Jurgen Habermas’ conception of the cosmopolitan condition as constitutionally structured multi-level global governance without global government geared towards the global realization of peace, human rights, and democracy. Habermas upholds the enlightenment ideals of rationality, freedom, human rights and democracy based on the notion of communicative reason implicit in everyday use of language. Hence, Habermas defends the universality of the constitutional state subject to procedural discourse. The democratic ideal at the level of a state is to bring the political and economic system under the will of the people articulated in discourse. The global realization of human rights and democracy is conceived as the control of supranational and transnational governance by the will of world citizens developed in national and transnational public spheres. I argue that Habermas’ democratic theory seems to be unrealistic in existing liberal democracies where the autonomy of political discourse and public sphere is challenged by political and economic forces. Analogously, Habermas’ cosmopolitan project is problematic in that the development of cosmopolitan consciousness and global public sphere is compromised by economic globalization. In as much as national and transnational public spheres depend on uneven global economic structure; it is unlikely that Habermas’ project will realize the goal of overcoming global economic and social inequalities. I argue that the development of popular based nationalism in the postcolonial south can make the state serve the interest of the majority of the people and also challenge economic globalization. ▼ My dissertation empirically addresses some unanswered questions that have motivated much debate among banking practitioners, government lawmakers and economists by investigating two natural experiments provided by regulatory reforms. The first study examines the impact of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Improvement Act of 1991 (FDICIA) on market discipline in the U.S. banking industry. I employ the Granger causality test with Arellano-Bond’s GMM technique to measure the "timeliness" of market discipline by testing whether changes in bank risk have predictive power for changes in Jumbo CD interest rate spreads. I also consider how this power has been impacted by the enactment of the FDICIA. Furthermore, I test the "effectiveness" of market discipline by testing the predictive power of changes in interest rate spreads for changes of accounting risk measures in order to examine whether banks take any “self-correction” actions. The findings support the hypothesis that both the "timeliness" and "effectiveness" of market discipline from the Jumbo CD holders have been significantly improved since the enactment of the FDICIA in 1991. The second study examines commercial banks’ strategic choices regarding the interstate branching mode: de novo branching vs. mergers and acquisitions. It also analyzes the impact of this choice on branch performance in the host market.Two-step Heckman estimation is employed in tackling the selection endogeneity problems. The results show that under several well-defined circumstances, de novo interstate branching mode is preferred to M&A. Furthermore, entrant banks choosing interstate branching via M&A have absolute performance advantages over entrant banks setting up de novo branches. Moreover, derived counterfactual performance outcomes indicate that both groups of banks categorized by their choice of interstate branching mode seem to have made the right decision. Therefore, free interstate de novo branching might encourage more small banks to enter, which could prove beneficial to the development of small business within the host state without posing much threat to incumbent banks. ▼ I analyze the effects of bank mergers and competitive market structure after the Riegle-Neal Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act. The first chapter studies the incentives to decide mergers and the effects of market competition. Nationwide branching from deregulation and the resulting bank consolidation have brought more a competitive market environment. In particular, branch networks play an important role in bank merger analysis. Using commercial banks' branch-level location data in Texas from 1994 to 2005, I estimate a two-sided matching model of merging and target banks with transferable utility. To study post-match values, I apply the maximum score estimator developed by Fox (2010). I find the positive assortative matching of bank sizes and I confirm that a bank prefers matching with target banks that have geographically overlapping markets. Moreover, I extend the standard matching model to incorporate externalities of market competition and the merger activities of rivals. Competitive rivals lessen the effects of mergers but mergers that increase market power have positive externalities on unmatched banks. The second chapter develops a structural model of demand and supply for retail banking to predict post-merger price. Ownership consolidation can affect not only price but also product characteristics. Once demand parameters and price elasticities are estimated, the adjustments in banking characteristics following mergers are considered in order to estimate marginal costs. I apply Peters’ (2006) simulation methods to account for the discrepancy between simulated merger changes and actual changes. The third chapter builds on an entry model of Berry and Waldfogel (1999) to quantify market competition. Significant consolidation waves after the Riegle-Neal Act brought a decrease in the number of banking institutions, while the relaxation of branching regulations almost doubled the number of bank branches and fortified market competition. When a new branch with high quality enters, I analyze the effects of market deposit expansion, business stealing from rival incumbent banks and cannibalization from other branches operated by the same bank. I find evidence that business stealing effects dominate cannibalization effects as market size increases. However, the impact of competition is localized and cannibalization effects are rather reversed at remote distances.

▼ A wealth of unique physics makes the frequency band from 0.3 – 3.0THz technologically relevant and compact room-temperature semiconductor sources would en- able many new spectroscopic applications. All semiconductor sources currently have serious difficulties reaching the THz, and no THz device of any type operates on the full range at room temperature. This dissertation proposes a novel semiconductor source which utilizes the transferred-electron (Gunn) effect and the Smith-Purcell effect to operate over the majority of the 0.3 – 3.0THz band at room temperature. Mathematical derivations provide a theoretical analysis of the device and computer simulations explore its performance as a function of design. The dissertation begins with a description of the device and an overview of the field of terahertz science. A literature review establishes the relevance and uniqueness of the work and highlights the physical principles required to model the operation of the device. Next, the mathematical “machinery” required model the device is built, starting with a derivation of the Butcher-Fawcett “equal-areas” method used to calculate the Gunn effect. A description of the computer code written to implement the equal-areas method and examples validating its correct operation follow. A derivation of the Smith-Purcell effect provides a closed-form solution for the electric field, which is then combined with the Gunn effect results. With the theoretical methods thus established, a detailed explanation of the simulation methods used to model the device is provided, followed by a detailed comparison between theory and simulation – in which it is shown that the theoretical methods display a high degree of agreement with computer simulations of the device. The results of an extensive design study are then presented that map the range of predicted results for this terahertz device. The Smith-Purcell device is found to perform better than or comparable to any state-of-the-art semiconductor THz source. At room temperature, a single 100µm-wide device is predicted to generate 365µW of power at 0.28THz and 1µW at 2.5THz. The dissertation concludes with suggestions for subsequent research – most urgently for an attempt to experimentally verify the predictions of this work. O gênero Hyalella Smith, 1874 abriga os anfípodos gamarídeos de ambientes de água doce, restritos ao continente americano. O Brasil apresenta uma alta diversidade de espécies quando comparado a outros países, mas a fauna subterrânea ainda é pouco conhecida. O presente estudo tem como objetivo identificar e descrever as espécies de Hyalella encontradas em áreas subterrâneas nas regiões Sul e Sudeste do Brasil. Hyalella sp. nov. 1 é a primeira espécie troglóbia descrita para o estado de Minas Gerais, com distribuição restrita a Gruta Vereda da Palha. A espécie apresenta caracteres troglomórficos como a redução dos olhos, ausente em alguns exemplares; as antenas possuem tamanhos similares; cinco setas serradas na face medial do própodo do gnatópodo 1; gnatópodo 2 com palma irregular, fortemente inclinada e urópodo 1 com uma seta curva no ramo interno. Hyalella sp. nov. 2 é a primeira espécie troglóbia descrita para o estado do Paraná, restrita a Caverna das Andorinhas. Esta espécie possui caracteres morfológicos troglomórficos como olhos ausentes e antena 1 maior que a antena 2; o gnatópodo 1 com formato do própodo oval e cinco setas serradas na face medial ventral; gnatópodo 2 com própodo alongado e oval, com palma lisa fortemente inclinada; dáctilo longo, ultrapassa a metade do comprimento do própodo e urópodo 1 com uma seta curva no ramo interno. Hyalella sp. nov. 3 possui uma ampla distribuição pelos rios epígeos e hipógeos dos parques PEI e PETAR no estado de São Paulo, o que a classifica como uma espécie troglófila, suas características incluem os olhos bem desenvolvidos e pigmentados; antena 1 menor que antena 2; própodo do gnatópodo 1 com sete a treze setas serradas na face medial ventral e gnatópodo 2 com a palma do própodo irregular, pouco inclinada. A adição de um novo caracter morfológico em relação ao ângulo de inclinação da palma do gnatópodo 2 pode auxiliar na identificação de todas as espécies de Hyalella. Este trabalho evidencia a semelhança entre três, das cinco espécies hipógeas encontradas no Brasil: H. imbya Rodrigues & Bueno, 2012; Hyalella sp. nov. 1; Hyalella sp. nov. 2, que apresentam a palma fortemente inclinada, enquanto a Hyalella sp. nov. 3 é a única espécie até o momento que apresenta a palma pouco inclinada. Além da descrição de duas espécies hipógeas e uma epígea do gênero Hyalella, uma chave de identificação foi proposta para as espécies troglomórficas brasileiras e, novas localidades de ocorrência são registradas para Hyalella warmingi Stebbing, 1899. Com a adição destas espécies o percentual de espécies troglomórficas brasileiras aumenta de 17,6% para 25%.

O governo português, profundamente empenhado na manutenção das colónias africanas, teve uma importante influência no início e desenvolvimento da crise desencadeada pela declaração unilateral de independência da Rodésia do Sul, pelo então seu primeiro-ministro Ian Smith. Com este trabalho, pretende-se mostrar o envolvimento que o governo português, então liderado por Oliveira Salazar, teve na atitude rebelde do primeiro-ministro rodesiano para com a Grã-Bretanha, apesar da frágil posição internacional de Portugal, devido à manutenção da sua política colonial, e do segregacionismo rodesiano, contrário ao discurso oficial da integração rácica nos territórios ultramarinos. O que o governo português teve como foco orientador, foi a necessidade de garantir a segurança da fronteira sul de Moçambique, comportando-se de forma realista, pondo o interesse nacional, manutenção das colónias e do regime, como elementos centrais na política externa, mesmo tendo como adversário principal a Grã-Bretanha, a então potência colonial da Rodésia do Sul.

The Portuguese government, deeply engaged on the African colonies maintenance, had an important influence in the beginning and development of the crisis spawned by the unilateral declaration of South Rhodesia independence, by its then prime minister Ian Smith. With this work, one pretend to point out the engagement that the Portuguese government, leaded then by Oliveira Salazar, had on the Rhodesian prime minister rebel attitude against Great Britain, despite Portugal frail international rank, due to its colonial politics maintenance and Rhodesian segregationism, adverse to the race integration official speech for the overseas territories. The Portuguese government was guided by the need to ensure the safety of Mozambique’s southern border, behaving itself in a realistic approach, putting the national interest, colony maintenance and regime, as its external politic main element, having even so Great Britain as main adversary, then the South Rhodesia colonial authority.

▼ The Neal shale, the organic-rich interval of the Floyd Shale located in the Black Warrior Basin of Alabama and Mississippi, has attracted recent attention as a potential economic source of hydrocarbons. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopic analysis of 54 Neal shale samples indicate the formation is clay-rich and quartz-poor, with the clay content averaging 47.2 wt% and the quartz content averaging 25.2 wt%. Total organic carbon (TOC) values averaged 2.27 wt%, based on the correlation of XRF trace element concentrations to pyrolysis data. Nine samples of the Neal shale, representing 3 different levels of thermal maturity, were analyzed by FIB-FESEM to determine if organic porosity increases with thermal maturation. Based on this analysis, Neal shale porosity is a mixture of fissure, organophillic, and interparticle porosity. However, no increase in organic matter porosity was observed with increasing thermal maturation. Instead, the organophillic porosity development was found to be linked to bitumen migration/maturation. This suggests organic porosity development was significantly affected by the organic matter composition, rather than by thermal maturity alone (Figure 8). Kinetic porosity modeling indicates the formation developed as much as 4.82% kerogen porosity. However, kinetic porosity models like the one used in this study may not be valid because they do not account for the chemical composition of the organic matter (i.e., kerogen vs. bitumen). Basin modeling indicates that the Neal shale has a large resource potential, with an adsorbed gas estimate of 460 Tcf and recoverable free gas estimates ranging from 227-4,943 Bcf. Uniaxial strength tests indicate Neal shale samples have an average unconfined axial strength of 3.42 MPa, and the underlying Lewis Limestone samples have an average unconfined diametral strength of 22.22 MPa. This suggests that the underlying Lewis Limestone should serve as an active barrier to hydraulic fracturing efforts within the Neal shale. Although the Neal shale has retained a large volume of natural gas, mapping of the limestone fracture barriers and additional testing of hydraulic fracturing mechanics on clay-rich formations will be necessary before the potential development of the Neal shale as an unconventional petroleum reservoir can be fully evaluated.
