▼ This study evaluated the diversity of the genus Eurydice on sandy beaches in South Africa by analysis of morphological as well as genetic data. Type specimens of the three Eurydice species currently known from South Africa, E. longicornis, E. kensleyi and E. barnardi were obtained from the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin and the Iziko Museum in Cape Town, South Africa. These specimens were studied in order to become familiar with their morphology. Eurydice individuals obtained from 30 sites spanning the South African coast, from Port Nolloth on the north-west coast to Bhanga Nek on the north-east coast were then examined. The two species E. kensleyi and E. barnardi, as well as four new morphospecies (A, B, C and D) were discriminated from these individuals by suites of morphological character types. Morphospecies A, B, C and D were therefore delimited according to the Phenetic Species Concept. None of the Eurydice individuals examined exhibited the same suite of characters as E. longicornis. Molecular sequences of two mitochondrial markers, cytochrome c oxidase 1 and 16S rRNA were analysed using both distance- and monophyly based methods. Uncorrected p-distances, a Minimum Spanning Haplotype Network and Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic trees were investigated to determine genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in the six Eurydice morphospecies. Results from the genetic analysis made it possible to delimit morphospecies A B, C and D as phylospecies A, B, C and D according to the Phylogenetic Species Concept, thereby validating the species status of four new Eurydice species, provisionally called Eurydice A, Eurydice B, Eurydice C and Eurydice D. This increases the total number of Eurydice species from South Africa to seven, of which six form part of the macrofauna of sandy beaches. The outcomes of this study represent an important step in the resolution of the taxonomy of the genus Eurydice in South Africa and enhance current knowledge of the biodiversity of sandy beach macrofauna, thus facilitating better-informed decisions on conservation policies and management to the benefit of conservation of biodiversity on sandy beaches in South Africa.

▼ Abstract for the Thesis “How does the morphology of gleaning bats constrain their locomotor performance?” submitted by James Gardiner for the degree of PhD in the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Manchester in September 2011.Bats are one of the most numerous and diverse orders of mammals. This diversity is reflected in the wide range of bat morphologies. The relationship between bat foraging behaviours, flight styles and wing shapes has been well studied. Little research, however, has focused on other features of bat morphology, such as ear and tail membrane size, and how variations in these affect a bat’s locomotion. Indeed, knowledge on this topic has at best been speculative. In this thesis, I provide insight into the trade-offs and relationships that exist between less studied aspects of bat morphology, and their foraging and locomotion, with focus on the group of bats referred to as gleaners. In this thesis I use a model bat in wind tunnel tests to demonstrate that the long ears of some bat species have profound implications for their aerodynamic performance, and their energetics. A trade-off, however, is likely to exist, since the long ears provide a foraging benefit, which may balance the additional flight cost of the large ears. Additionally, bats may be able to minimise the flight cost of their ears through appropriate ear positioning. Using data collected from museum specimens I also demonstrate that other features of bat morphology, particularly the tail membrane, are good indicators of foraging strategy. Gleaning bats are identified as the group with the largest ears, whilst commuting bats have the shortest tail membranes. The energetic implications of these variations in morphology were then investigated using a theoretical model. The theoretical model suggested that tail morphology, as well as ear morphology, was likely to have a profound effect on flight performance in bats In contrast to bird tails the aerodynamic function of bat tail membranes is not well understood. Accordingly, I investigated bat tail membrane aerodynamics empirically using a model suspended in a wind-tunnel and from this was able to present the first evidence that bat tail membranes fulfil an important flight control function. Although bats primarily fly, certain species, such as the gleaning bats, spend a significant proportion of their foraging time on or near the ground and vegetation, landing to capture prey. Several gleaning species are also documented as frequently jumping from the ground back into flight. Research, however, on bat jumping had previously concentrated on the unusual vampire bats. I, therefore, present further data on bat jump performance and show that no ecological trend is present, with body mass being the best indicator of performance. During their 473 million-year diversification, gnathostomes came to exploit an unprecedented variety of trophic niches. Modifications to dental form and mineralized tissue constituents (i.e. enamel, dentines and in a few taxa, cementum) facilitated their exploitation of novel prey and/or plant matter. In general, it has been assumed that the intra-tissue level biomechanics of these constituents had little bearing on whole-tooth functionality, aside from enamel in mammals showing dental occlusion. Specifically, many mammals possess teeth that self-wear to functionality and show a diversity of derived dental tissues (e.g. prismatic enamel fabrics, coronal cementum) – some which have been shown to possess unique biomechanical attributes to resist wear and fracture. Here I formally test the hypothesis that the primitive gnathostome hard tissue material properties remained static prior to the cladogenesis of Mammalia. An ancillary goal is to glean initial insights on how the material properties of these dental tissues in non-mammalian and mammalian taxa may contribute to whole-tooth form, function, performance and diets. Properties were tested and examined using two standardized material science techniques, microindentation and nanoindentation, as well as a novel technique for quantifying fracture propagation from cracks formed during microindentation. The results from this investigation suggest these material properties are highly variable among gnathostome dentitions. Aside from hardness, there is not a significant relationship between most material properties and diet aside from enamel hardness. There are also complex fracture patterns seen in the enamels of mammals and chondrichthyans, showing that gnathostome lineages independently evolved properties to control fracture and damage done to tooth enamel. Overall, this study suggests that in the case of enamel hardness, natural selection operated at the tissue level to bring about shifts in tooth functionality throughout the gnathostome radiation. More material properties (i.e. fracture toughness) need to be investigated to uncover the true functional import of material properties in dental tissues and establish how the tissue complexes contributed to whole tooth function.

As sessile organisms, barnacles represent easy foraging opportunities for many intertidal and subtidal predators. Certain species of marine snails with a shell spine, which is inserted into the operculum and then used to wedge it open, are particularly adapted to feed on barnacles. This gives the snails full access to the barnacle, which they rasp out. Against this predation, adult barnacles have few defenses as adults, but if exposed soon after settlement, they may be situated to alter the width of the opercular opening, thus reducing the ability of the snails to gain leverage to open the operculum. This study looks at changes in operculum width of the intertidal barnacle, Cthamalus fissus, in response to a known predator, the snail Acanthina spirata, a non-predator turbin snail (Tegula funebralis), and no snail at all. Juvenile barnacles and the snails were collected from La Jolla, California, USA, during early July 2007, and shipped live to Central Connecticut State University. Upon arrival, the barnacles were digitally photographed for initial measurement of the operculum width, operculum length, and basal diameter. Following the initial measurement, the barnacles were exposed to A. spirata, T. funebralis, or neither, depending on the treatment, for an hour a day for the next forty days. At the end of the exposure period, on October 1, 2007, the barnacles were again photographed for later measurement. The initial analysis of the relationship between operculum widths versus operculum length, as well as between the treatments, showed that prior to exposure, the barnacles had no difference in operculum width (p = 0.184). At the end of the exposure period, the analysis showed that the operculum widths of the barnacles exposed to the predator A. spirata were significantly narrower than those of the non-predator treatments.Widths of barnacles in the non-predator treatments (control and turbin snail) did differ significantly from each other. In conclusion, barnacles exposed to a predatory snail were induced to undergo a morphological adaptation to reduce the prospect of predation in the future. This study shows that when exposed to Acanthina spirata, Cthamalus fissus will develop a narrower operculum.

▼ Hadrosaurs, the 'duck-billed' dinosaurs, were abundant members of Campanian (Late Cretaceous) communities in the Western Interior of North America, and are thus an ideal group for studying high-resolution evolutionary trends. This dissertation describes two new hadrosaurine taxa from the Judith River Formation exposed in Kennedy Coulee, northcentral Montana. The localities are stratigraphically equivalent to Unit 1 of the Oldman Formation, a time interval with no previously described hadrosaurine species. Phylogenetic and geometric morphometric analyses, combined with recalibrated radiometric dates, demonstrate that the new taxa form morphologic and stratigraphic intermediates within the lineages of Gryposaurus and Acristavus-Brachylophosaurus. The new genus of brachylophosaurin has a short posteriorly-oriented nasal crest hypothesized as an intermediate evolutionary state between the stratigraphically lower crestless Acristavus (lower Two Medicine Formation) and the stratigraphically higher Brachylophosaurus (middle Oldman Formation), with its wide posteriorly elongated crest. The nasal crest of Brachylophosaurus elongates posteriorly ontogenetically (as the individual grows). Histologic analysis demonstrates that the holotype of the new genus is relatively more mature than the largest Brachylophosaurus specimen, so its smaller crest size is not due to the ontogenetic status of the holotype. The new species of Gryposaurus is from a monodominant bonebed of at least ten individuals and three size classes: juvenile, subadult, and adult. The taphonomy of the bonebed is interpreted as a mass death assemblage deposited along a lake margin. The abundant postcranial bones are illustrated in a photographic atlas. In the new Gryposaurus species, the shape and position of the nasal crest is morphologically intermediate between the stratigraphically lower G. latidens (lower Two Medicine Formation) and the stratigraphically higher G. notabilis (lower Dinosaur Park Formation). In G. latidens, the nasal crest is low and anterodorsal to the posterior narial fenestra. The nasal crest becomes progressively higher and more posteriorly located in stratigraphically younger species. A similar trend occurs ontogenetically within specimens of the same species. Thus, in Gryposaurus and Acristavus-Brachylophosaurus lineages, directional trends in nasal crest morphology are observed both through ontogeny and between stratigraphically separated non-overlapping taxa, suggesting that the new taxa may be transitional members of anagenetic evolutionary lineages. This dissertation examines the influence of morphological factors on stress and pitch accent. Two basic types are recognized. In root-controlled accent, inherent accent in a root overrides inherent affix accent; as a result, affixal accent is only realized in words with unaccented roots. In affix-controlled accent, the presence of a particular affix triggers one of several accentual mutations in the stem: deletion of accent (or a 'dominance effect'),insertion of an accent (often known as pre- or post-accentuation), and accent shift or 'flop'.I argue that these two types of accentual behavior,despite important differences, are united under the rubric of faithfulness constraints in Optimality Theory. Root-controlled accent is a consequence of the privileged faithfulness status of roots over affixes, as has been shown in other empirical domains such as vowel harmony. Affix-controlled accent is due to a novel type of constraint, anti-faithfulness,which evaluates a pair of morphologically related words and requires an alternation in the shared stem.The principal case of root-controlled accent studied in this dissertation is the Uto-Aztecan language Cupeño. In addition, I show how the accentual systems of Japanese and Russian fall within the scope of root faithfulness constraints. The study of these cases leads to a substantive restriction on the range of edge effects in accent systems, and clarifies a role for root accentedness in blocking morpho-accentual processes.A number of properties of affix-controlled accentual processes are identified and shown to follow from the anti-faithfulness thesis. Affix-controlled accent is (I) morphologically triggered, (II) stem-mutating, and (III) grammar dependent. (I-II) follow from the assumption that anti-faithfulness operates on related words: forcing an alternation in a pair of words ensures that affix-controlled accent is morphological because it contrasts two word classes. Furthermore, as a relation between words, anti-faithfulness only affects the interval of a word which occurs throughout a paradigm, namely the stem (II). Finally, anti-faithfulness does not fully specify how a pair of words should differ accentually; its specific effects therefore depend on the larger grammar in which it is embedded (III). Affix-controlled accent in Russian, Japanese, Cupeño, Limburg Dutch, and Aguaruna (Jivaroan) is investigated in a series of case studies. I argue that anti-faithfulness constitutes an integrated theory of the diverse morpho-accentual phenomena found in these languages, explains the important differences between the accentual properties of roots and affixes, and establishes parallels with non-accentual affix-controlled phenomena.

▼ Different morphological theories assign different status to parts of words, roots and affixes. Models range from accepting both bound roots and affixes to only assigning unit status to standalone words. Some questions that interest researchers are 1) What are the smallest morphological units, words or word parts? 2) How does frequency affect morphological processing? 3) How do experimental results affect existing morphological theories? In this dissertation I attempt to investigate these questions in more detail using results from psycholinguistic experiments and integrating them into the Network theory of morphology.I first consider what kinds of information a morphological model should take into account. It should reflect the intuition of speakers that words consist of different parts, while avoiding the difficulties of theories that propose that roots and affixes are separate units. In addition, it should incorporate the notion of paradigms and frequency information. I look at how various morphological theories account for Russian data, in particular verbal prefixes and words where they occur.The status of roots is intensely debated in morphology, and views of the nature of roots range from being complete separate units on their own, to being considered epiphenomena over words, which are the only existing units. Additionally, it is frequently debated whether free and bound roots have the same status, or are different. In the dissertation I describe the results of a prefix separation experiment in Russian, where more than two types of roots can be identified. The results demonstrate that a productive prefix is separated with greatest easy from words with free roots and with greatest difficulty from words with completely bound roots. The remaining two root types are in between those extremes, according to the characteristics of the root types. I interpret these results as meaning that roots form a continuum based on the strength of connections between words. The stronger the form and meaning connections, the more easily identifiable a root. This interpretation fits well within the Network theory of morphology, where only words are units and there are connections of differing strength between them.Continuing with the investigation of different units of morphological processing, I report the results of a complexity rating experiment in Russian where words with different prefixes were used. The results demonstrate that ratings of word complexity show a direct correlation with the level of transparency of prefixes in those words. Results of both of these experiments fit into the Network theory of morphology; however, two interpretations are possible with respect to prefixes. While I suggest that roots are not units, it is possible that prefixes, and affixes in general, can be represented as generalizations over many words. ▼ Influenza viruses are known to cause seasonal epidemics that claim nearly half a million lives each year. In addition, influenza viruses can also cause occasional pandemics which, in the past, have resulted in a significant increase in the number of influenza-related deaths worldwide. Pandemics arise when influenza viruses with novel hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins are introduced into the human population to which there is no prior immunity. In addition to causing disease, emerging viruses with pandemic potential must also be capable of sustaining efficient human-to-human transmission. Transmission of human influenza viruses occurs mainly through contact of the mucosal membranes with respiratory droplets containing infectious viral particles. Previous studies have shown that both environmental and molecular factors can influence the efficiency of influenza virus transmission such as air temperature and humidity, and viral protein stability. Another factor which is likely to affect the efficiency of influenza virus transmission is virion morphology. Influenza virions are known to have multiple forms, ranging from 100 nm spheres to filamentous particles with lengths of up to 20 μm. Furthermore, there is a known correlation between the size of respiratory droplets and the distance in which they can travel. The smallest droplets measuring between 1 and 5 μm are carried the greatest distances and are therefore thought to be responsible for long range influenza virus transmission. For this reason, influenza viruses that produce an abundance of small spherical virions may exhibit higher transmission efficiencies than viruses with large filamentous phenotypes. In April of 2009, a novel influenza virus (pH1N1) with an extremely high rate of transmission efficiency emerged in the human population. This virus was identified as an H1N1 reassortant between two influenza viruses that had been circulating throughout pig populations for many years. Most of the pH1N1 gene segments were originated from the triple reassortant (TR) swine lineage, while the M and NA segments are from viruses of the Eurasian swine lineage. Despite being genetically similar, TR viruses rarely infected humans and were incapable of sustaining efficient human-to-human transmission. We therefore tested whether pH1N1 and TR viruses which differ in their ability to transmit between humans also differ in virion morphology. We discovered using immunofluorescence and electron microscopy that the highly transmissible pH1N1 strain produced predominantly spherical virions, whereas the poorly transmissible TR isolates induced a filamentous phenotype. We also showed that the difference in morphology between these viruses was due to specific amino acid residues with the influenza matrix (M1) protein at positions 30, 207, and 209. Substitution of these pH1N1 M1 residues with the corresponding TR residue by site-directed mutagenesis resulted in recombinant pH1N1 viruses with filamentous morphology, reduced viral growth kinetics, and small…

▼ My dissertation focuses on the ecological circumstances associated with the evolution of heavily ornamented morphologies within Busyconine whelks. Busyconine whelks display a variety of shell forms in the Recent and fossil record, with heavily ornamented shells concentrated in the southern part of the modern species Busycon carica's range. In the fossil record, heavily ornamented shells recur in temporally disjunct populations over variable geographic extents from the Pliocene onwards. I investigated the function of shell sculpture (such as the tumid ridge, increased shell thickness, and spines), as well as fitness costs (such as reduced growth) associated with producing and maintaining heavily ornamented shells. I used stable isotopes to construct growth curves, and compared growth estimates to prior studies throughout B. carica's range. In modern populations of B. carica, increased ornamentation confers a significant benefit when dealing with shell crushing predators. Growth curves constructed from stable isotopes show a latitudinal trend in growth rates, with slower growth in northern populations, and also revealed diminished growth in the south within populations for heavily ornamented individuals, as compared to weakly ornamented individuals. Some prior growth studies have ignored episodicity of growth in Busycon; this has led to inaccurate estimation of rates. Future work should focus on both incorporating intervals of non-growth into models derived from markrecapture studies, and also on further examining growth costs associated with the development of heavily ornamented morphologies. This work also highlights the importance of standardizing for growth rates, body size, and degree of ornamentation when calculating repair frequencies. In the fossil record, adaptations are best developed in the Pliocene, and diminish sharply in abundance across the Plio-Pleistocene boundary coeval with a regional extinction event. The use of an ecometric approach, which advocates using the presence or absence of traits to assess environmental and ecological conditions, suggests that the maintenance of adaptations following the extinction event was diminished, likely as a combined response to both deteriorating environmental conditions and lower predation rates. Higher predation rates and more permissive environmental conditions in the late Pleistocene and Recent are correlated with increased abundance of defensive features.
