▼ Two brief excerpts of transcribed talk from the First Annual General Meeting of a Co-operative Association, and some additional background information from 'field observations', are taken as data for the study of participants' organization of that occasion through their conversational practices. Employing a methodological perspective directed toward the discovery of the formal structures of practical actions first proposed by Harold Garfinkel and Harvey Sacks,² ³ ⁶ a descriptive analysis is offered of members strategies for constructing this talk as socially organized activity. We find, through the activities of 'beginning', '.constructing a way of proceeding', 'constructing a first item of business', and 'keeping track of topics and speakers', that the occasion is constituted as a 'meeting'; and by noting the resources called upon in 'constructing topics' and 'doing membership categorization' we find the production and display of that occasioned-group as a 'meeting of a formal organization'. With respect to topic-choice and speaker-selection problems, we observe that a fundamental aspect of the character of that group-occasion is provided in their particular solution, the propriety of which turns on the interpretive scheme provided via the 'reasons for the meeting'. We have also shown how 'invoking authorship', 'doing biographical analysis', and 'calling for an autobiographical account may be directly implicated in controlling the talk at that point in the occasion. Numerous other features of these activities are discussed with a similar concern for displaying how they are ‘situated’ with respect to such resource classes as 'the Co-op Organization', and 'the sequential organization of that occasioned talk'. In retrospect, and by way of characterizing what we have accomplished in the analysis, we are able to relate some of our findings to published material in the field. If we are permitted to extrapolate from our experience with these two small excerpts of talk, we are led to conclude that further study of 'the meeting', as a pervasive and accessible form of social activity, promises to contribute to our understanding of the social organization of multi-person gatherings and the production of occasioned talk in natural settings.

▼ The study discussed in this paper comes at a critical time. As the meetings and events industry continues to grow and mature, and meetings and events become strategic solutions for clients, professionals are required to show business value in the meetings and events that they plan. Clients need constant reassurance that their event will have a positive and successful outcome. In some cases, this measure of success can be a financial one: where the meeting or event benefits outweigh the costs. However, with a wide variety of meeting and event types, it is not always possible to quantify benefits with a dollar value. Meetings and events can have intangible benefits, but with current industry evaluation models, these intangible benefits are not measured well and are somewhat ignored. Another gap in current meeting and event evaluation models is the focus. Models, such as the Phillips’ Return on Investment (ROI) Methodology, measure return on investment for the client, but much of the data is not relevant or collectible for the meeting professional. Little information exists on how planners can measure the success of their meetings and events. The need to demonstrate business value and limited success metrics are the key reasons why this study was conducted. From an evaluation standpoint, industry professionals are faced with two primary issues. The first issue is the definition of a successful meeting or event, and the second is how to appropriately measure intangible, non-financial success. What constitutes success may vary by industry segments or meeting type, but these nuances aren’t addressed in current evaluation models, such as ROI. ROI is only an appropriate measure in five percent of meetings and events (Myhill & Phillips, 2006), which suggests that additional success metrics can be developed and tested. A two-tiered study employing qualitative and quantitative methodologies was used to address the multiple study purposes. First, telephone interviews were conducted with the objective of identifying how meeting and event industry professionals define and discuss success in the events they plan, as well as uncover key success traits along with ways to measure them. In addition, the results of the interviews were reviewed to determine if the Pine and Gilmore Experience Economy framework is an appropriate classification for meetings and events industry evaluation models. The emergent themes from the first part of the study were used to inform a questionnaire sent to a sample of the meetings and events industry population for triangulation. The sample of professionals shared their levels of agreement with the definition of meeting and event success, and key traits and measurement metrics of success. The results of the survey were analyzed using a chi-square statistical analysis and used to suggest a new model for success evaluation. Purpose: The aim of this research is to examine how it is possible to continuously motivate managers from different departments for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The goal is to investigate if and how CSR leaders can realize commitment to CSR by conducting meetings in transformational leadership style. Methodology: The study uses a combination of theoretical and empirical research. Theoretical research contracts and contrasts knowledge of the areas CSR, transformational leadership and meetings in new ways. By empirical research qualitative and quantitative data is attained by 12 interviews with CSR leaders and managers of 6 Australian organizations. Findings: Transformational leadership clearly motivates managers for CSR in meetings, because it enhances trust, understanding and commitment to CSR. All of the transformational leadership components are relevant and leaders can enhance them by specific behaviors. The motivational effects of various transformational leadership elements depend on characteristics of the audience such as position, gender, personality and experience. Practical Implications: Leaders already apply the concepts of transformational leadership, but it is recommended to increase its appliance for achieving optimal motivation. For realizing commitment leaders need to be aware of different impacts of transformational leadership elements and emphasize transformational leadership behavior in CSR meetings adjusted to the audience. Limitations: Despite the sample size corresponds to academic standards of qualitative research, there are limitations regarding the investigation of the effects of transformational leadership on different age groups, various industries, organization types or countries.

▼ The traditional dry-erase whiteboard is a ubiquitous tool in the workplace, particularly in meeting spaces where they are a key collaboration tool. Although research on whiteboard use and the development of whiteboard systems have been a staple in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) literature, there is a lack of how whiteboard content is used to direct actions outside the meeting. In today’s mobile-centric world, knowledge workers capture whiteboard content after a meeting by taking photos of them with mobile devices such as cellphones. This thesis empirically investigated post-meeting practices with whiteboard photos to explore how these practices might be better supported by technology. In particular, this thesis investigated the main post-meeting activities that whiteboard photos support, how people value whiteboard photos, and how they manage them. Nineteen knowledge workers from a variety of professions, companies, and industries across North America who were regular users of whiteboards were interviewed using a semi-structured protocol. A Thematic Analysis of the data revealed that whiteboard photos were primarily used to create superseding documents and were sometimes used as evidence of agreement. Whiteboard photos were used mostly in the short-term, and their value was transient. Also, an analysis of the minute detailed actions that interviewees reported taking with one or two recent whiteboard photos revealed that the typical lifecycle of those whiteboard photos involved a seven-stage lifecycle. Moreover, a memory recall task with six of the interviewees about previous meetings where a whiteboard was used revealed that general characteristics of those meetings were well remembered while characteristics about the whiteboard content were not well remembered. The findings suggested a set of unmet design needs for the development of improved mobile-centric whiteboard capture systems. The suggested design implications include the need for a mobile application that supports quick capture and the effortless transfer of whiteboard photos to productivity-oriented devices, and the need for a desktop application that supports the extraction of whiteboard content to aid users in creating superseding documents.

▼ Parliament is the Central Institution of democracy in Zambia through which the will of the people is expressed. In a normal situation, Parliament is supposed to provide opportunities for grassroots participation as it executes its roles of legislation, executive oversight and representation. As a unique elected body that represents society in all its diversity, Parliament has a unique responsibility for reconciling the conflicting interests and expectations of different groups and communities through the democratic means of dialogue and compromise. The main objective of this study was to investigate through a case study of the Zambian Parliament, popular and effective participation in parliamentary processes in Kawambwa District and evaluate the extent to which the legislature in Zambia is open and responsive enough for public participation in its business. The findings of this research is poised to expand the general knowledge base for further research into the areas of popular and effective participation in development especially as it relates to Parliament. Further it is likely to influence the following categories of people: policy-makers, government policy implementers, development theorists, NGOs, cabinet and local authorities.In carrying out this research, the quantitative survey technique was used to collect data from 100 members in Kawambwa Constituency. Further, in depth interviews were also conducted with key stakeholders such as the Speaker of the National Assembly, Members of Parliament, community based civic organizations whose work focuses on constituency relations. After analysing the data that was collected from the field, there is no doubt that people are aware that the founders of the institution of parliament had in mind increased public participation in parliament for accelerated development. However, it has been established that Parliament has not made any significant contribution to the creation of a democratic institution at constituency level which favour effective participation in development.There is however, a reasonable increase in the political participation of people which highlights the significance of local democracy to the rural population. In terms of development participation, both the people and the Members of Parliament are nonetheless more inclined to favour people involvement in development activities which is very encouraging especially for the future.Similarly the share of parliament in constituency development is considerably low explained very largely by lack of resources and preferences of central government to directing major development projects through other government bodies thus by-passing the people’s representatives. But despite this, belief in parliament as the viable institution for constituency development is continuously preferred by the people.Lastly, it is important in a study of this kind to recommend new models or new concepts and strategies for development. Esta investigação acontece junto aos percursos de uma pesquisadora que, em encontros com o mundo, experimenta intensidades que movimentam seus lugares enquanto professora. Para tanto, são vivenciadas ações que não desembocam, necessariamente, em aprendizagens, mas que possibilitam fissuras nos papéis atravessados, bem como agenciamentos coletivos que fazem passar rastros de intensidades. Partindo de movimentos dados em um tempo e lugar específicos a intervenção artística Movimentos de Espera, realizada junto ao evento arte#ocupaSM desenvolve-se uma pesquisa que tenta escapar desses limites, atravessando outros tempos e lugares, inclusive os da aprendizagem, fazendo da espera um espaço de acontecimentos. Autores como Deleuze, Guattari, Rolnik e Nietzsche trazem indicativos para fazer dessa pesquisa caminhos de não saber, de direções inesperadas e múltiplas, vividas em constantes movimentos de náusea pela impossibilidade de fixidez em um único lugar professora. Não havendo um lugar único ao qual se fixar, investe-se em aprendizagens imprevisíveis junto aos cães, às rachaduras e à chuva. A partir deles ressoam desejos de conhecer o mundo através de intensidades atemporais, ao passo que não se escolhe os dados e aprendizagens a serem pesquisados, mas se é escolhido e se produz algo nos encontros com eles. Assim, a pesquisa permite problematizações acerca da produção de rachaduras na atuação docente, contando com as imprevisibilidades e incômodos dos respingos da chuva e com o comprometimento despreocupado dos cães no encontro com os acontecimentos cotidianos de um lugar habitado.

This investigation happens with the paths of a researcher which, on meetings with the world, experiments intensities which move her places as a teacher. For so, actions which do not lead necessarily to learning, but to able cracks on crossed roles are lived, as long as collective agencements which make intensity traces pass. Starting on movements given in a specific time and place artistic intervention Waiting Moments, done inside an event called arte#ocupaSM a research which tries to escape those limits is developed, crossing other times and places, including the learning ones, and turning the act of waiting into a space of happenings. Authors as Deleuze, Guattari, Rolnik and Nietzsche bring indicatives to turn this research into paths of not knowing, of unexpected and multiple directions, lived in constant movements of nausea by the impossibility of fixing into a unique teacher place. By not having a unique place to settle, some unpredictable learning happens together with the dogs, the cracks and the rain. Through these, desires to know the world through timeless intensities resonate, knowing we do not choose data and learning to be researched, but we are chosen by them and we produce something with them. ▼ This thesis examines the practice of the camp meeting as a significant factor in the growth of the Methodist Episcopal Church in nineteenth-century New England. Such a comprehensive investigation into camp meetings in New England has never been done before. Also, with the exception of one book and one other recent dissertation, the general history of Methodism in New England is a topic that was overlooked for nearly a century. This research helps to fill those gaps. Many scholars give credit to camp meetings for fostering conversion, though the focus has generally been on camps held in the American South and the western frontier. After briefly recounting the rise of Methodism and camp meetings in the United States, the thesis turns to a more specific focus on the rise of Methodism and camp meetings in New England prior to 1823. Zion's Herald newspaper provides a steady and previously untapped source of primary information about camp meetings in New England from its first appearance in 1823 to well into the twentieth century. After discussion of some key developments of New England Methodism relevant to camp meetings between 1823 and 1871, a thick description of one camp meeting in 1823 is presented to show how the many parts worked together. This is followed by an account of aspects of the camp meetings that might be classified broadly as ritual, how these changed over time, and the impact they had on the process of identity formation at the camps. The spotlight is then directed toward the liturgical aspects of camp meetings as practiced in New England. These include components of worship practices common to Methodist congregations of the period as they gathered for prayer meetings, Sunday worship and quarterly conferences, such as preaching, praying, singing, and love feasts, and also those acts of worship developed specifically for camp meetings such as dedicating the grounds, and the closing ritual procession and "parting hand." As with the ritual practices, attention is again given both to how these worship practices influenced worshippers, and how they changed over time. Finally the interpretive framework of "poetic discourse" offered by Stephen Cooley is used to analyze the most potent ritual elements involved in the process of conversion and church growth in conversation with contemporary scholars in the fields of sociology and ritual studies. In the end this study shows not only the factors that fostered conversions and church growth, but also how the camp meetings gradually lost their potency as they changed over time.

▼ The aim of this study was to investigate expert meetings and groups as a distinctive approach to promoting the participation of children and young people within the context of the children’s ombudsman in Norway. To achieve this broad objective, specific questions revolving around the rationale, character, significance and bottlenecks of expert meetings and groups were formulated. Premised on the findings of this investigation, the study would then draw implications for policy and practice within the field. A qualitative approach, in particular case study design was selected to facilitate collection of data and analysis of the resulting findings. This included collecting data about the case using in-depth / qualitative interviews and analyzing relevant documents. Coding and analysis of primary data drew inspiration from a constructivist grounded theory approach, while in analyzing secondary data, this approach was complemented with qualitative content analysis. The entire coding and analysis procedure was facilitated by NVivo’s powerful analytical tools. In general, the choice of a qualitative approaches for this study was informed by their ability to deliver a thick understanding of the research phenomena, and describe the findings giving due consideration to the relevance of the context The findings of this investigation have revealed that expert meetings and groups have a clear premise; essentially as a fulfillment of children’s fundamental and democratic right to actively participate in society as competent citizens, in accordance with evolving capacities. At the same time, these initiatives are intended to provide a powerful empowerment force through which to underscore the plight of children, so that predominantly adult run systems can take conscious child sensitive precautions, both those required to alleviate present indignity, and prevent future reoccurrences. The study observes that the character of expert meetings and groups celebrates a firm grounding in the basic principles required for achieving an effective and ethical participatory ethos. The findings further point to an array of individual, organizational and wider system benefits accruing from these initiatives. Outstanding benefits include; providing a platform for the realization of children’s rights, propelling active empowerment for participants, and learning outcomes for adults; while consciously challenging the system to effect quality and more child friendly services. Amidst such gains, the ombudsman acknowledges that the promise of participation lies in the power to inculcate within society an all-round value system; that both celebrates children’s competency, and demonstrates genuine commitment to engage with them respectfully as equals. A presente dissertação é um estudo de caso com o propósito de analisar a relação existente entre o crescimento do turismo de negócios e eventos e o incremento dos meios de hospedagem na cidade brasileira de Belo Horizonte. Inicialmente, realizou-se pesquisas bibliográficas e de campo para ampliar a percepção sobre o tema. Posteriormente, foram visitados os hotéis internacionais Mercure Lourdes e Quality, e os hotéis nacionais Ouro Minas e Dom Otto. As visitas possibilitaram a comprovação dos dados colectados nas principais entidades ligadas ao sector turístico. A análise qualitativa demonstrou que a metrópole adoptou uma estratégia focada no crescimento do turismo de negócios e eventos. Expandiram-se assim as políticas públicas, parcerias foram formadas e as associações e demais agentes ligados ao sector fortaleceram-se. Devido a focalização dos objectivos, tornou-se mais fácil encontrar investidores e mobilizar o mercado. O plano de marketing bem implementado permitiu o aumento de eventos captados e a ampliação da demanda. Consequentemente, houve a expansão da infra-estrutura para apoiar o segmento. Nesse contexto, enquadra-se o aumento dos meios de hospedagem, sobretudo a instalação de flats. Como resultado, confirmou-se que o turismo de negócios e eventos remodelou a cidade. Foi a oportunidade encontrada pela metrópole para beneficiar-se com o fluxo internacional e atrair visitantes para uma área do interior do país. Belo Horizonte é, actualmente, a quinta cidade brasileira que mais recebe eventos internacionais. Sua oferta hoteleira é composta por, aproximadamente, 127 hotéis, que possuem cerca de dez mil unidades habitacionais.

This research is a case study that analyzes the relation between business tourism´s growth and hospitality industry´s increase in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte. In order to extend the knowledge about this area, a theoretical and a practical research were developed. Subsequently, the international hotels Mercure Lourdes and Quality, and the national hotels Ouro Minas and Dom Otto were visited. During the investigation, informations collected in the main tourism’s associations were verified. Qualitative analysis showed that the city has adopted a strategy focused on business tourism´s growth. Public policies were enlarged, partnerships formed and the associations and other tourism agents strengthened. Due to the directed strategy, it became easier to find investors and congregate the trade. Correct marketing plan permitted the raise of the business travel and tourism demand. Therefore, the infrastructure expanded to support this segment. In this context, it is important to remember the hospitality industry´s improvement, especially the installation of flats. As a result, it was confirmed that business tourism transformed the city. Raros são os trabalhos que estudam o Turismo de Negócios a nível nacional. Tendo em conta a importância deste sector turístico, esta dissertação consiste na análise de um estudo de caso cujo objectivo principal foi o de avaliar o desempenho da procura do segmento Meetings Industry (MI) durante os anos 2008 e 2009 nos empreendimentos hoteleiros de cinco estrelas da Costa do Estoril. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida em duas partes: Na primeira parte efectua-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica que compreende a dinâmica nacional e internacional do Turismo em geral e do Turismo de Negócios em particular. São abordados conceitos associados ao tema da pesquisa e efectua-se um levantamento referente às características, importância económica e tendências do segmento Meetings Industry. Na segunda parte apresenta-se o estudo de caso com os resultados da pesquisa de campo. Dos dados recolhidos foi possível caracterizar a procura Meetings Industry e a sua representatividade no que diz respeito aos seguintes aspectos: quando ao número de eventos solicitados e realizados, ao número de room nights, à receita gerada, ao número e dimensão dos grupos, aos serviços e actividades mais requisitados, aos sectores de actividade mais representativos, às principais nacionalidades dos grupos, aos principais canais de distribuição, à duração média dos eventos, à sazonalidade, ao tipo de eventos, à despesa por pessoa/dia e quanto às tendências de sustentabilidade.

This study aims to show the importance of Winetourism as a factor of attractiveness to tourism destinations, supported by a case study applied to Ribatejo region. Besides the concept of Winetourism postulated by several authors and experts on this topic, we made two studies: a qualitative one through deep interviews to entities directly or indirectly related to the tourism activity and a qualitative one, through the application of a survey. This case study allows to reveal the kind of development that Winetourism is achieving in the Ribatejo region, to define a visitors profile and highlights this product attributes that have influence in destination attractiveness. Winetourism gathers the necessary conditions to act like a strategic product to destinations attractiveness, as it stands as a differentiator element, allows to enhance the local cultural and traditional characteristics and works as a main or alternative attractor of a tourism destination.

Magistro baigiamojo darbo tikslas yra išanalizuoti ir įvertinti susirinkimų, pramogų draugijų, spaudos teisinio reguliavimo teorinius bei praktinius aspektus. Magistro baigiamojo darbo chronologinės ribos – 1918 – 1940 metai – visapusiškai sutampa su nepriklausomos Lietuvos valstybės gyvavimo laikotarpiu. Pirmojoje darbo dalyje laiko riba apima parlamentinį laikotarpį, kuomet šalyje buvo kuriamos ir plėtojamos spaudos, draugijų, susirinkimų ir pramogų laisvės, šių teisių reguliavimui buvo kuriama nacionalinė teisinė bazė. Antrojoje darbo dalyje analizuoju autoritarinių nuostatų įsigalėjimą šalies įstatymuose, o vėliau ir Konstitucijoje. The aim of Master's work is to analyze and evaluate the juridical adjustment of the meetings, entertainment, associations and the press by the theoretical and practical aspects. Chronological range - 1918 - 1940 year – is the independent Lithuania state lifetime. The first part of the work includes the parliamentary term, when the country created and developed the human rights, according to the national law. The second part of the work intended to analyze the authoritarian regulations in national law and eventually in the Constitution. In the third part I analyze the impact to the liberties of the state of emergency through all the inter-war period. During the parliamentary period the press, association and entertainment and meetings have been regulated by the relevant laws. Authorities were trying to create a legal means to defend human rights within the limits of the law to granted constitutional guarantees. Although the constitution declared the liberty of the press, meetings, association and entertainment, the legal regulation of these areas were established by law. When the country has entrenched the authoritarian presidential position the press, meetings, association and entertainment has been regulated by the new laws, which allowed the citizens to use their constitutional rights and freedoms only with appropriate permits from the government representatives or officials. ▼ Tutkin tässä tutkimuksessa vastaanottokeskusten vastustamista. Tarkastelen nimby-ilmiön mukaisesti sitä, miksi vastaanottokeskukset ovat ei-toivottuja naapureita ja selvitän, minkälaisia kaupunkipelkoja vastaanottokeskusten vastustavassa puheessa ilmenee. Aineistoni muodostuu kolmella eri paikkakunnalla järjestetystä asukastilaisuudesta, joissa paikkakuntalaiset esittävät vastaanottokeskuksen perustamisesta vastaavilta viranomaisilta kysymyksiä koskien vastaanottokeskusta. Tutkimukseni keskittyy tilaisuuksissa ilmenevään demokraattiseen osallistumiseen ja asukkaiden vaikutusmahdollisuuksiin. Tutkimuskysymykseni ovat: Millaisia kaupunkipelkoja vastaanottokeskuksia vastustavassa puheessa esiintyy? Millaisia argumentteja viranomaiset käyttävät vastatessaan kaupunkilaisten pelkoihin? Aineistoni koostuu kolmen asukastilaisuuden videotallenteista vuosilta 2015 ja 2016. Tutkimukseni on otteeltaan laadullinen ja analyysimenetelmänä käytän sisällönanalyysia. Analyysin tukena käsittelen aineistoa myös retorisen analyysin keinoin. Tutkimukseni perusteella vastaanottokeskusten vastustamisessa esiintyi erilaisia kaupunkipelkoja. Paikkakuntalaisten pelon kohteena olivat nuoret turvapaikanhakijamiehet, joiden uskottiin tuovan negatiivisia muutoksia paikkakunnan elämään. Turvallisuudentunteen koettiin vähentyvän ja rikollisuuden lisääntyvän vastaanottokeskuksen tulemisen myötä. Paikkakuntalaisten pelot olivat osittain myös sosiaalipoliittisia. Ne ilmenivät huolina vastaanottokeskuksen perustamisen taloudellisista kuluista ja turvapaikanhakijoiden työllistymismahdollisuuksista. Asukastilaisuuksien funktio oli tulosten perusteella erilainen paikkakuntalaisilla ja viranomaisilla. Paikkakuntalaisille tilaisuudet näyttäytyivät tilaisuuksina, joissa on mahdollista vaikuttaa päätöksentekoon. Viranomaisille tilaisuudet sen sijaan toimivat tiloina, joissa jo tehtyjä päätöksiä perusteltiin ja omaa asiantuntijuutta korostettiin. Asukastilaisuuksien funktion eriävyys heijastui siihen, kuinka asukkaat olivat huolissaan omien vaikutusmahdollisuuksiensa vähäisyydestä. Asukastilaisuuksissa esiintyi vuorovaikutuksellista dialogia paikkakuntalaisten ja viranomaisten välillä, mutta deliberatiivisen demokratian mukaista painoarvoa päätöksenteolle keskustelulla ei ollut. ▼ Valvotuilla tapaamisilla tarkoitetaan lapsen ja hänestä erillään asuvan vanhemman välisiä tapaamisia, joita järjestetään lapsen turvallisuuden takaamiseksi neutraalissa ympäristössä ulkopuolisen henkilön toimiessa valvojana. Pro gradu -tutkielmassamme tarkastelemme Tampereen kaupungin perhe¬oikeudellisten palveluiden järjestämiä valvottuja tapaamisia, joita organisoi kaksi ohjaajaa ja valvovat vapaaehtoisvalvojat. Tutkielmamme teoriaosuudessa tarkastelemme valvottuja tapaamisia muun muassa perhesuhteiden, lainsäädännön, tyypillisten valvontatilanteiden ja kiistanalaisuuksien näkökulmasta. Tarkastelemme valvottuja tapaamisia Tampereen kaupungin järjestämänä toimintana, vaativaa vapaaehtoistyötä yleisesti ja raportoinnin merkitystä valvotuissa tapaamisissa. Pro gradu -tutkielmamme tarkoituksena on kartoittaa, mitä valvottujen tapaamisten valvojan tehtävä antaa vapaaehtoistyöntekijöille sekä millaisia elämyksiä, kokemuksia tai ristiriitoja he kokevat toimiessaan valvojina. Tutkimuksemme on kvalitatiivinen eli laadullinen tutkimus ja tutkimusaineistomme muodostuu vapaaehtoisvalvojien kirjoittamista kertomuksista, joissa he kertovat kokemuksista, haasteista ja onnistumisista vapaaehtoisvalvojan tehtävässä. Tutkimuksemme tuloksista on luettavissa kokemuksia valvojan roolista, tehtävän moni-muotoisuudesta ja roolin ristiriitaisuudesta sekä valvojana olemisen merkityksellisyydestä. Tämän hetkinen lainsäädäntö Suomessa ei määrittele kenen vastuulla valvottujen tapaamisten järjestäminen on. Sen sijaan valmisteilla oleva uusi sosiaalihuoltolaki pitää sisällään valvottujen tapaamisten järjestämisen kuntien velvollisuutena. Uuden sosiaalihuoltolain myötä valvottujen tapaamisten toimintaa on tarkasteltava vapaaehtoisuuden ja ammattilaisuuden, valvojien kouluttamisen tai koulutuksen ja velvoitteiden sekä tapaamisten raportoimisen osalta ja kehitettävä tarpeen mukaisesti. ABSTRACT Opening doors is the most challenging and rewarding thing demanding volunteering in supervised meetings The concept of supervised meetings is defined as the meetings between a child and a non-residential parent which are arranged in a neutral environment where an external person acts as a supervisor to ensure that the meetings are safe for the child. The thesis examines the supervised meetings arranged by the department of family legal services in the city of Tampere, coordinated by two child welfare workers and supervised by volunteering workers. The theory chapter of this observes supervised meetings from the perspective of family relations, legislation, the situations often encountered in the meetings, and the usual types of contradictions faced. We present an overview of supervised meetings organized by the city of Tampere, as well as of demanding volunteer work in general and meaning of reporting in supervised meetings. Mötet mellan människor är något som kan vara spännande och få en att upptäcka något nytt i livet, likaså i film. Dessa möten mellan karaktärer gör att handlingen drivs framåt och skapar ett spännande interagerande mellan karaktärer. I detta kandidatarbete har vi valt att fokusera på mötet mellan hjälten och skurken, oftast två starka och viktiga karaktärer inom film. Karaktärsrollerna är hämtade från Voglers The writer’s Journey (1997). För att få en bredare bild av hur rollerna kan se ut i film har vi valt att analysera två olika filmer i olika genre, filmerna vi valt är Die Hard (1988) och Alien (1979). Vi har tagit hjälp av analysmodellen som presenteras i From Antz to Titanic - A students guide to film analysis (2000) och format modellen till vårt passande. En av delarna i analysen fokuserar på hur de tekniska aspekterna i scener kan hjälpa till att föra berättelsen vidare. Grundat i undersökningen har en kompletterande gestaltning i form av en film skapats där vi har använt oss av karaktärsrollerna som vi analyserat.

Meetings between people can be exciting and make you discover something new, also in movies. Meetings between the characters drives the plot forward, and create exciting interaction between the characters. We have chosen to focus on meetings between the hero and the villain, two strong and important character roles in the film. The character roles are taken from Vogler, The Writer's Journey (1997). To get a broader picture of how roles may appear in film, we have chosen to analyze two different films in different genres, the films we have chosen are Die Hard (1988) and Alien (1979). We have used the analytical model presented in From Antz to Titanic - A student's guide to film analysis (2000) and formed the model to our fitting. One of the parts of the analysis focuses on the technical aspects of the scenes that can help move the story forward. Based on our survey of character roles and meetings between them, we have created a movie to portray this.

In this thesis the automatic multimodal detection of social and task cohesion in meetings is studied. The presence of social and task cohesion has positive benefits on employee well-being, creativity and productiveness, and can therefore be used to assess meeting quality. Conversational partners imitate each other's body language and speech characteristics to have smoother interactions, to increase liking, and it can cause a coordination of expectations. We hypothesize that social and task cohesion are therefore positively related to the imitation of both body language and speech characteristics. As the group-level alignment of non-verbal speech behaviour has been previously linked to social and task cohesion in meetings, this thesis investigates the relationship between cohesion in meetings and both motion and posture mimicry from accelerometer and video data. Motion mimicry is described using accelerometer features previously used for the detection of friendly and romantic attraction in pairs. We propose a method to convert these features to group-level descriptors of mimicry. The same quantifications of mimicry are also applied to video-based motion quantifiers that have been previously used to detect team cohesion. Appearance is described using HOG descriptors from densely-sampled feature points that are tracked over time. To our knowledge this is the first-time appearance similarity is used to estimate cohesion. We also test if a multimodal mimicry model performs better than a unimodal mimicry model to investigate if the different forms of mimicry contain complementary information. Our group-level movement mimicry features detect social cohesion with average an area under the ROC-curve of 0.64 for social cohesion, and the accelerometer-based movement mimicry features specifically detect task cohesion with an average AUC of 0.63. The multimodal combination of the different features does improve over the unimodal models with an area under the ROC-curve of 0.68 for social cohesion and 0.65 for task cohesion. This shows both that movement mimicry is an indicator of verbal expressions of cohesion, and that measuring mimicry in different modalities can better model cohesion than a unimodal model. Further experiments are recommended for general appearance feature mimicry, specifically in the method used to measure mimicry, to confirm or deny if these are related to cohesion.

In this thesis the alignment of speech behavior between team members of small group meetings (3-8 people) and its relation to team cohesion is studied. Since team cohesion is highly related to effectiveness and productivity, automatically estimating cohesion can be a useful tool for assessing the meeting quality. This information can be fed back to the meeting groups with the goal of improving meeting quality. Research within social sciences suggests that participants of a meeting put larger effort in aligning their speech behavior when they like each other more and when they are more committed to the common task. We therefore hypothesize that non-verbal speech alignment is positively related to both constructs of team cohesion, social and task cohesion. We propose a novel method of quantifying group-level alignment of non-verbal speech behavior, namely, voice intensity, pitch, Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients and speech rate. The resulting quantifications of non-verbal speech alignment are used to estimate high and low social and task cohesive regions. This is the first study examining alignment within prosodic cues on a group level, instead of a dyadic (one-to-one) level. In total, more than 20 hours of naturalistic group meetings were recorded and examined. As a measure for cohesion, a behavioral approach was followed, in which the cohesion levels were objectively quantified using verbal expressions. As cohesion is known to be inherently temporal, a dynamic methodology was pursued quantifying the alignment of speech on small time windows. By extracting three features solely related to the alignment of prosodic speech behavior, it was found that 2-minute high and low social cohesive regions could be classified with 0.72 Area under the ROC curve. The results imply that the alignment of speech behavior between the different participants in a meeting is a strong indicator for the team cohesion. This result holds for small naturalistic group meetings, implying that the proposed methodology is capable of detecting prosodic speech alignment on a group level. Predicting task cohesion was more challenging, an accuracy of 0.64 Area under the ROC curve was obtained. This performance was better than the Area under the ROC curve obtained with features related to turn-taking patterns (AUC). It appears that social cohesion is more openly expressed by behavior than task cohesion is. This insight accentuates the importance of distinguishing in social and task cohesion, instead of integrating them as one construct "team cohesion". Further analysis is needed to draw firm conclusions about the underlying behavior examined and how exactly the dynamics of the meeting are related to group outcomes as productivity and meeting satisfaction.
