▼ This research study aims to assess the potential for Saudi Arabia to become an international conference destination. Faced with problems created by rising unemployment, a rapidly growing population, and fears over dependence on petroleum output and price, the kingdom is currently looking to develop new sources of employment and national revenue. Having joined the World Trade Organization in 2005, Saudi Arabia is committed to liberalizing its markets and opening to foreign participation by creating investment and business opportunities. Developing an international conference sector is considered a potentially suitable way to meet the current domestic and international imperatives to change and the challenges these present. The growth of new markets and international conference destinations in a globalizing economy is leading to increased research. However, the field is still young: there has been limited attention paid to the perspective of delegates and much of the research has been concerned with western destinations. As no other study has been carried out into the potential of this sector in Saudi Arabia, or the Gulf region, this research makes an original contribution to knowledge. A mixed methods approach was adopted to explore and assess both the practical capacity of the country to host international conferences and the socio-political context that might impact on this development. The primary sources of data were officials in the field and visiting delegates, whose views and knowledge were obtained through the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods (through a questionnaire and interviews respectively). The results are integrated in the final discussion. The findings indicate that, although Saudi Arabia has the practical capacity to host international conferences, the effects of an ambivalent attitude towards opening up to the outside world - expressed through a number of factors embedded in the socio-political situation in the kingdom - has led to an impasse which is blocking development.

O presente trabalho de mestrado consiste na elaboração de um plano de negócios, e tem
como objectivo principal demonstrar o interesse de um evento anual ou semestral que se
assuma como um fórum de discussão sobre o turismo de negócios, promovido por uma
entidade privada que seja um player forte do sector, e que rentabilize o potencial da
cidade de Lisboa e, mais especificamente, do Centro de Congressos de Lisboa.
O turismo de negócios compreende o conjunto de actividades turísticas nacionais ou
internacionais decorrentes dos encontros de interesse profissional, associativo,
institucional, de carácter comercial, técnico, científico e social. De acordo com a
informação de organismos internacionais, nomeadamente da ICCA – International
Congress and Convention Association, Lisboa tem sido uma das principais cidades a
nível mundial na meeting industry, ou seja, tem sido um dos principais destinos de
acolhimento de congressos e reuniões internacionais. É nesta perspectiva que o Centro de
Congressos de Lisboa surge como um local de referência nacional e internacional, que
reúne todas as condições para ser a organização líder no processo de aglutinação de
esforços e para dar projecção ao turismo de negócios em Portugal.
Na perspectiva da organização este será um novo produto porque passaria a ter um
evento próprio, afastando-se da sua lógica de funcionamento actual que é o acolhimento
e gestão de eventos de terceiros nas suas instalações. Este novo produto pode contribuir
para consolidar a imagem do Centro de Congressos de Lisboa e dinamizar as vendas no
mercado nacional.
This Master's project develops a business plan, and aims to demonstrate that an annual or
biannual event should be created to work as a forum for discussion on business tourism,
promoted by a private entity that is a strong player in the sector, and monetize the
potential of the city of Lisbon, and of the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa.
The business tourism comprises the set of national or international tourism activities
arising from professional interest meetings, associative, institutional, commercial,
technical, scientific and social. According to information from international
organizations, notably the International Congress and Convention Association - ICCA,
Lisbon has been one of major cities worldwide in the Meeting Industry, meaning that is
one of the main destinations of international congresses and meetings. It is in this
perspective that the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa emerges as a national and
international reference venue, which gathers all the conditions to be the leading
organization in the process of gathering efforts and give projection to the business
tourism in Portugal.
From the perspective of the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa this is a new product
because the organization would have an event of its own, moving away from its current
operating logic which is to host and manage third-parties events on its premises. This

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to identify the destination site selection criteria for internationalconferences from the perspectives of the three main players of the conference industry,conference buyers (organizers and delegates) and suppliers. Additionally, the researchidentifies the strengths and weaknesses of the congress cities of Stockholm and Vienna.Through a comparison with Vienna, the top city for hosting international conferences, a roadmap for Stockholm has been designed, to strengthen its congress tourism opportunities, thus,obtaining a higher status as an international congress city. This qualitative research hascombined both primary and secondary data methods, through semi-standardized expertinterviews and secondary studies respectively, to fulfil the study’s aim. The data have beenanalysed by applying the techniques of qualitative content analysis; the secondary dataadopting an inductive approach according to Mayring (2003) while the expert interviewsusing a deductive approach according to Meuser & Nagel (2009). The conclusions of thesecondary data have been further compared and contrasted with the outcomes of the primarydata, to propose fresh discoveries, clarifications, and concepts related to the site selectioncriteria for international conferences, and for the congress tourism industry of Stockholm. Theresearch discusses the discoveries of the site selection criteria, the implications of thestrengths and weaknesses of Stockholm in comparison to Vienna, recommendations forStockholm via a road map, and future research areas in detail. The findings andrecommendation, not only provide specific steps and inceptions that Stockholm as aninternational conference city can apply, but also propose findings, which can aid conferencebuyers and suppliers to cooperate, to strengthen their marketing strategies and developsuccessful international conferences and destinations to help achieve a greater competitiveadvantage.

▼ This qualitative essay discusses some of the issues surrounding the lack of knowledge companies have about the importance of meetings as a means for company development. Today, many meetings are carried out without a well defined purpose and aim. As a result of this, the meeting industry is slowly beginning to become aware that companies have a need for professional guidance when drawing up a meeting. Meetings carried out should be stimulating for the company as well as the co-workers. Companies should come to an awareness of the importance of meetings, and the full capacity of the meeting can be made use of, through using meetings as a means of communication. When companies carry out meetings the focus should be on the quality of the meeting, rather than the cost. Meetings should be regarded as an investment, comparable to investments in physical capital. We think that this new way to plan and carry out meetings is a new direction within the meeting industry. This direction takes focus on a professionalisation of the content and purpose of the meeting. This development will benefit companies both within and outside the meeting industry. With a professionalisation, companies outside the meeting industry will replace a lot of inefficient meetings with less, but more efficient meetings. The professional meeting should be used as a tool for reaching success, competition benefits and development. The meeting industry will benefit from this process, since more companies would like to turn to experts, which contributes to a new direction with new services generating higher revenue.
Denna kvalitativa uppsats belyser problematiken kring företagens bristande kunskap om mötens betydelse för företagsutveckling. Flera av de möten som genomförs idag saknar ett genomarbetat syfte och mål. Detta har lett till att mötesindustrin sakta börjar bli införstådd i att företagen har ett behov av professionell hjälp med utformningen av möten. De möten som genomförs ska vara utvecklande för både företaget och medarbetarna. Företag bör komma till insikt om mötens vikt, genom att använda möten som ett kommunikationsverktyg kan mötets fulla kapacitet utnyttjas. När företag genomför möten ska fokus ligga på kvalitén i mötet, snarare än kostnaden. Möten bör ses som en investering på samma sätt som en investering av en fysisk produkt. Det nya sättet att planera och genomföra möten tror vi är en ny inriktning inom mötesindustrin. Denna inriktning fokuserar på en professionalisering av mötets innehåll och syfte. Denna utveckling kommer att gynna företag både inom och utanför mötesindustrin. Företag utanför mötesindustrin kommer med en professionalisering att ersätta många ineffektiva möten med färre men effektivare möten. Det professionella mötet ska användas som ett verktyg för att nå framgång, konkurrensföredelar och utveckling. Mötesindustrin gynnas av denna utveckling då fler företag vill anlita professionell hjälp, vilket bidrar till en ny inriktning med nya tjänster som kan generera i en högre omsättning.

▼ Esta tese estuda o processo da implantação do Programa de Turismo Solidário pelo governo de Minas Gerais no Vale do Jequitinhonha - MG, bem como as características e os significados que o mesmo adquiriu, tanto junto aos moradores das localidades alvo quanto junto aos chamados turistas solidários, e avalia o estado da arte de modos de turismo semelhantes ao que ocorre no Vale, com ênfase em alguns casos nas favelas cariocas. A tese focaliza a apropriação pela população das diretrizes e dos aspectos teórico-metodológicos da proposta desse Programa; a percepção dos moradores em relação ao turismo que ali ocorre; o enquadramento em que os encontros no turismo solidário ocorrem; os significados do turismo solidário; os indicadores do turismo solidário. Traz, de um lado, uma visão abrangente, discutindo questões relacionadas às políticas públicas no campo do turismo, e de outro lado, uma abordagem de caráter etnográfico, relativa ao encontro intersubjetivo entre ―turistas solidários‖ e a população local. A construção da linha argumentativa da tese fundamenta-se nos seguintes pressupostos: as propostas de descentralização por meio da ideia de governança apresentadas pelas políticas públicas que sustentam a ideologia do Programa de Turismo Solidário são ferramentas importantes para o desenvolvimento local; o encontro entre pessoas com diferentes formas de vida, com reconhecimento recíproco entre si, suscita em ambas as partes um alargamento da percepção de mundo e uma possibilidade para redescrição dos sujeitos; o enquadramento em que a interação ocorre e o nível de intimidade entre os participantes influenciam na possibilidade do individuo repensar valores e atitudes. O documentário ―Retrato Brasil‖ filmado durante as pesquisas de campo, foi elaborado na perspectiva de auxiliar na promoção do que é chamado de turismo solidário, entre outras possibilidades.
This thesis studies the process of implementation of a Program of the state government of Minas Gerais called Turismo Solidário in the Jequitinhonha Valley- MG, as well as the characteristics and meanings that this program has acquired to the people who live in this region and to the so called solidary tourists. This thesis also evaluates the state of the art in similar ways of turism to the one that occurs in the Valley, such as the turism in Favelas in Rio de Janeiro. The thesis focuses on the appropriation by the local population of the guidelines and the theoretical and methodological aspects of this proposed program, the perceptions of the inhabitants towards tourism that takes place there, the framework in which the meetings occur in Turismo Solidário, the meanings of solidarity tourism, and the indicators of this kind of turism. The thesis bring on a comprehensive discussion of public policies in tourism and makes an ethnographic approach, on the meeting between solidary tourists and the local population. Tiene como objetivo concreto a: La comprensión de los factores que influyen en la evolución de la demanda a corto y medio plazo en el segmento de negocios internacionales y que pueden ser susceptible de control por los agentes económicos y políticos de los destinos turísticos; para entender la influencia de los territorios políticos vecinos en el comportamiento del turismo de negocios internacionales de los países internacionales; y presentar un conjunto de prescripciones para el sector estratégico del turismo de negocios portugués.
Los resultados de esta investigación demuestran que la inversión privada en el gasto de capital fijo en el sector turístico, el turismo de ocio y el grado de apertura comercial de los países son las variables explicativas que explican la evolución del gasto a corto y medio plazo de los viajes y del turismo de negocios internacionales.
Este estudio también revela que la evolución del gasto en los viajes y en turismo de negocios en un país no varía con la evolución del gasto en los viajes y en turismo de negocios de los países vecinos, ni con las características exógenas de estos países adyacentes.
Por último, sobre la base de las implicaciones de gestión, se presentan una serie de recomendaciones para Portugal.

▼ Če želi podjetje v času varčevalnih ukrepov in vse hujše konkurence na trgu ohraniti ali celo povečati svoj tržni delež, je nujno, da zna svojo ponudbo ciljni javnosti kakovostno komunicirati. S potrošniki mora vzpostaviti učinkovit in dolgotrajen dialog, ki bo temeljil na zaupanju ter ustvariti ugled in zgraditi močno blagovno znamko.
V magistrskem delu smo preučevali marketinško komuniciranje poslovno-kongresnega turizma v hotelu Habakuk. Natančno smo preučili specifike poslovnega turizma in kongresne dejavnosti ter ugotovili, da ima organizacija kongresov pozitivne ekonomske, družbene, znanstvene in politične učinke, ki se odražajo na celotni turistični destinaciji. Podrobno smo opredelili teoretične postulate marketinga v kongresni dejavnosti in ugotovili, da turistični delavci zaradi specifičnih lastnosti storitev potrošnikom nudijo predvsem doživetja, ki jih morajo posredovati z ustrezno kombinacijo elementov destinacijskega trženjskega spleta. Ključno pri tem je marketinško upravljanje z naravnimi in turističnimi privlačnostmi ter imidžem kraja. Podrobno smo razdelali in preučili program marketinškega komuniciranja v Habakuku in ugotovili, da orodja komunikacijskega spleta uporabljajo koordinirano in med njimi dosegajo sinergijske učinke. Kljub temu smo pri uporabi posameznih instrumentov opozorili na nekatere pomanjkljivosti in predlagali, na kakšen način jih je mogoče odpraviti.
In times, when austerity measures are being taken and the competition on the market is getting more severe every day it is crucial for companies that they manage to communicate their offer to its target audience. Company has to develop a firm and effective dialog with its consumers and be able to establish good image and trusted brand.
In master's thesis a marketing communication of business tourism in hotel Habakuk is discussed. In an in-depth study on business tourism and meeting industry we determined that congress organization can stimulate positive economic, social, scientific and political effects on the whole tourist destination. We examined carefully the theoretical postulates of marketing in meeting industry and terminated that tourism companies are, due to the specific characteristics of services, focused on selling experiences, which must be offered in the suitable combination with the whole marketing destination mix. Subsequently marketing management of natural touristic attractions and the image of the tourist place is crucial. We studied and analyzed marketing communication program in Habakuk in detail and concluded, that all communication instruments are being used in a coordinated and synergetic way. Although in terms of the use of specific instruments we noted some imperfections and therefore we proposed required improvements.

▼ Tourism in Sweden is growing rapidly and the tourism industry is facing many challenges. Global tourism is getting less sustainable due to the rapid growth of the tourist industry and it is of great importance that actors within the industry starts working preventively to reduce negative environmental impact. There are great challenges then as growth in traveling must be combined with sustainable development. Included in tourist industry are meetings industry. Business traveling generates a large part of the total tourism revenue and this sector. This essay touches on the meetings industry and the ecological sustainability with focus on meetings facilities and their work regarding sustainable development. Explored is how chosen facilities work with these issues, how they experience the work and the challenges surrounding the implementation of environmental issues. Furthermore, the authors touches on subjects relating to rules and regulations which actors in the tourist industry should take into consideration.
Turismen i Sverige ökar kraftigt och turismindustrin står inför många utmaningar. Den globala turismen blir mindre hållbar på grund av turismindustrins snabba tillväxt och det är av stor vikt att aktörer inom turismindustrin börjar arbeta i förebyggande syfte för att minska den negativa påverkan på miljön. Det finns stora utmaningar då det gäller att kombinera det ökande resandet med en hållbar utveckling. Inkluderat i turismindustrin är mötesindustrin och affärsresandet som genererar en stor del av den totala turismomsättningen. Denna uppsats berör mötesindustrin och den ekologiska hållbarheten med fokus på mötesanläggningar och deras arbete kring hållbar utveckling. Syftet är att undersöka hur anläggningar arbetar samt hur de upplever arbetet och svårigheter kring implementering av miljöfrågor. Vidare tar föreliggande studie upp ämnen som rör ramar och regelverk som aktörer inom turismindustrin bör ta i beaktning.

▼ The meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) industry generates billions of dollars in direct and indirect spending annually, and is considered one of the fastest growing segments of the
tourism industry. Destinations that want to capitalize on this industry must understand what drives its planners. The current study used Orlando, Florida as a case study, and investigated whether there are differences between the three
meeting planners' types (association, corporate, 3rd party) in regards to destination selection attributes and the recent recession impact. The study further identified attributes that affect future bookings to Orlando. Data was collected from a nationwide survey of
meeting planners with a usable sample of 2,388 completed phone surveys and 118 completed online questionnaires. Only one significant difference was found between the three
meeting planners' types. This research was performed in the midst of the recent recession. Some effects of the recent economic downturn on the events industry are decreased attendance and more conservative cost management. Most association
meeting planners did not cancel or postponed their events, although all planners agree that attendance to their meetings decreased. Third party planners seemed to be the most sensitive to budget allocations. Recommendations for the Orlando Orange County Conventions and Visitor's Bureau include marketing the variety and quality of its
meeting facilities better, its extreme weather insurance and its website. It is also wise to pursue more local associations, because those can be the main source of income during recessions.
