meaning in life has burgeoned in recent years and studies have shown that
meaning is associated with many important variables, such as coping, well-being, and physical health. An important research question that has yet to be adequately addressed, however, is what helps individuals maintain a sense of
meaning even in the face of situations that challenge
meaning. In the current study, we specifically examined a sense of mattering, an important dimension of
meaning, and asked, what buffers the impact of threats to individuals' sense that their life matters? Based on previous research, we hypothesized that religiousness/spirituality and breadth of sources of
meaning may buffer threats to mattering and help maintain a sense of mattering. We also hypothesized that self-esteem will moderate responses to mattering threats as self-esteem has been found to be a predictor of compensatory responses in the threat-compensation literature. These hypotheses were tested using a mixed experimental design among a sample of 186 undergraduate students. Results of the present study showed a marginally significant moderation by self-esteem, but not by R/S or breadth. However, exploratory analyses of a subset of the sample revealed a possible moderation by breadth even after accounting for self-esteem. Findings are discussed in light of related literature and the limitations of the present study.

▼ This thesis addresses the idea of purpose and meaning in life and how it can be intentionally fostered across the lifespan. Purpose and meaning in life, as it relates to well-being, is considered by some scholars to be the highest-level construct from which all other lower-level constructs of well-being flow (Kashdan & McKnight, 2009). As this thesis will demonstrate, purpose is highly correlated with many other desirable outcomes that are vital for living a life of flourishing, thriving and wellness. Given the importance of purpose in life as it relates to wellness, health and psychological wellbeing, this thesis is concerned with whether purpose in life can be intentionally fostered within the human condition, especially for those who have a deficit of it. To achieve this, my thesis contains three studies:
I. A psychometric study that seeks to validate well-known purpose in life instruments and then create a new purpose in life instrument that is a common core that covers areas of the construct of purpose/meaning in life that exist in disparate meaning and purpose scales.
II. Test a purpose in life fostering intervention in a youth/ school based sample using a quasi-experimental design.
III. Test a purpose in life fostering instrument in an adult sample of people fifty years old and above using a randomized control trial.
Considering this my thesis seeks to satisfy the following four aims: 1. To arrive at a well-founded theoretical definition of the construct of meaning and purpose in life. 2. To find a way that purpose in life and meaning in life can be adequately and empirically measured. 3. To test whether purpose in life can be fostered in youth using an evidence based purpose-fostering coaching curriculum within a high school setting. 4. To study whether, using an evidence based intervention, purpose in life can be intentionally fostered in an adult sample. The first two aims, a) establishing a definition for the construct of interest and b) establishing a valid instrument with which the construct of interest can be measured, were prerequisites for being able to test whether purpose in life could be intentionally fostered. Aims three and four used the first two aims as a predicate to test the main hypothesis of whether purpose in life can be intentionally fostered in the human condition across the lifespan.
To accomplish these goals, the literature, as it relates to the definition of purpose in life, was analyzed and a novel approach to defining purpose was suggested. This approach takes meaning and purpose into consideration and argues that meaning and purpose are two elements that are intrinsic to the domain space of meaning in life and purpose in life. As I argue in the thesis from both a theoretical and an empirical perspective, meaning and purpose are, in fact, two inseparable aspects of one construct. One cannot have meaning without purpose and one cannot have purpose without meaning.

▼ Hall and Chandler argued that one of the deepest forms
of satisfaction or psychological success can occur when the person
experiences work as more than a job or career – when it is a
calling (2005, p. 160). They defined calling as work that a person
perceives as his
purpose in life. Adams (2012) said “there has been
a recent awareness of the need to find ways to incorporate
meaning
into people’s work (p. 66).” Steger defined
meaning as “the extent
to which people comprehend, make sense of, or see significance in
their lives, accompanied by the degree to which they perceive
themselves to have a
purpose, mission, or over-arching aim in life”
(Steger, 2009, p. 680). Historically, an individual received an
external calling from God but today another type of calling is
being discussed: that of an internal calling.
The Student
Volunteer Movement or SVM was the name of one of history’s most
impactful Christian missionary movements to ever take place, and it
originated in collegiate America (Ahrend, 2010). More missionaries
were sent out in the first year of the Student Volunteer Movement
than had been sent from the United States in the previous century.
From 1890 to 1930 the SVM was comprised of 100,000 volunteers who
committed to give their lives to the employment of Christian
missions. Of those, 20,000 actually left America to live in other
countries while 80,000 stayed behind in America. Those who stayed
behind formed the Laymen's Missionary Movement to financially
support the goers (Ahrend, 2010). During these forty years, this
mobilization effort was able to recruit one out of every
thirty-seven university students in the United States (Ahrend,
2010).
Undoubtedly, there are important implications for
understanding the Student Volunteer Movement if you are affiliated
with a Christian campus ministry. However, if the Student Volunteer
Movement were seen as only religious individuals, then one would
have misunderstood the developmental excellence of the SVM. The
lessons learned from the Student Volunteer Movement, transcend
religious boundaries.
Examining the Student Volunteer Movement
helps student development educators create new ways to support
students as they discover their calling. Additionally, it has
implications for how faculty and professionals advise students who
have calling. This paper provides an example of the relationship
between student affairs professionals and spiritual development
among students. This comprehensive analysis of the Student
Volunteer Movement informs student affairs professionals how best
to support a student’s holistic development.

▼ Intellectual development, academic success, and creating a positive psychological base are likely outcomes for college students who believe in free will and have a sense of
purpose. The current study examined the correlation between these two psychology terms that have existed in isolation; a sense of
purpose (
purpose exploration and/or
purpose commitment) and a belief in free will. It employed statistical correlation methods, and used the Revised Youth
Purpose Survey (Bundick et al., 2006), and the Free Will and Determinism Scale (FAD) (Paulhus & Margesson, 1994) scales. The sample of students (N=364; 73.47% female, 26.53% males) ranged in age from 18-31, and were from a Predominately White institution in the Northeast. Results suggested that there is a correlation between
purpose commitment and a belief in free will. This will be used as a preliminary study to further explore what possible mechanisms could alter that relationship between the constructs.

▼ The concept of an algebraic variable is both important in its own right and foundational for higher levels of math, but many students struggle to comprehend its meaning and purpose, demonstrating a variety of misconceptions about the interpretation of a variable and algebra’s relation to arithmetic. Common educational practices fail to support a substantial portion of students in connecting their intuitive cognitive capabilities to the formal external representations (i.e., symbolic notation) of algebra, depriving these students of understanding how and why variables are used, as well as their relevance in solving real-world problems. Previous attempts at improving students’ understanding of variables have focused on schematic induction across varied concrete examples or the generalization of relational thinking from arithmetic. While these efforts are important, the approaches do not fully elucidate the purpose of using formal symbols (e.g., letters) to represent unknown numbers. I posit that the clearest way to demonstrate the purpose of symbolic variables is through students’ formulation and attempted solution of mathematical problems where multiple unknowns must be represented (and distinguished from each other), such as in a system of equations word problem. Guided by principles from cognitive psychology and educational research, I formulate a framework for encouraging and supporting students’ intuitive discovery of the concept of variable using purpose-driven contrast comparisons, active learning techniques such as constructive struggling with intuitive hints, and contextual facilitation of students’ natural problem solving for meaningful, concrete tasks. Through this process, variables representations are introduced progressively, first by using more interpretable word equations and later by abbreviating word phrases into letter symbols. I implemented this framework into novel multimedia educational materials, which were iteratively piloted and revised, and then experimentally tested with middle and high school students against a more traditionally structured control version of the materials and a baseline condition. The results from this experimental testing suggest that students who were encouraged to infer the purpose of a variable before its formal representation was introduced went on to provide more correct answers to analogous problems on a post-test given 1-3 weeks later.

▼ The purpose of this research was to present a study that promotes understanding and exploration about how adult Iraqi refugees living in Jordan can still experience meaning making and hope in the face of suffering. The significance of this research lies in its unique findings that contribute to the body of literature concerning trauma recovery. A qualitative phenomenological in-depth interview methodology was used to explore the phenomenon of meaning in suffering among adult Iraqi refugees. The following research questions were used in this study to explore the phenomenon of meaning in suffering: Can life still be experienced as meaningful in the face of tragedy, grief, and suffering? If so, how do adult Iraqi refugees experience meaning and hope in the wake of their suffering? Can anything positive emerge from suffering? A phenomenological approach using semistructured interviews with a number of adult Iraqi refugees allowed participants to describe their lived experiences through their own perspectives. Through semistructured interviews with participants who have direct experience with the phenomenon, the essence as well as the variations of the investigated phenomenon across participants can be understood. Participants’ responses were recorded, transcribed, and repeatedly reread. The researcher looked for themes and patterns that emerge both within interviews and across the interviews. Findings indicate that the experience of meaning and purpose in life among participants include living in a safe environment and world, raising up a good generation, being men of good reputation and of influence, and respecting human freedom. The participants’ final message was this: Good values are what matters most to live a life of fulfillment.

▼ Research in Logotherapy substantiates the influence of
meaning on psychological
health and Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) corroborates the effects of psychological health
on physical health. This dissertation explores the relationship between
meaning and
physical health hypothesising that
purpose affects physical health.
Methodology
Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), ANOVAs and stepwise regression were used to
explore three possible models.
Results
EFA revealed four factors,
purpose, fear, vitality and aggression. Significant
correlations were found between
purpose, vitality (0.42) and work application (0.53).
Despite the significant relationship between
purpose and vitality, the lack of Chi-square is
significant, suggesting that additional variables should be introduced into the model.
Conclusion
People reporting high levels of
purpose together with low levels of fear and
aggression, can be characterised by high vitality and an absence of medical conditions.
Future research should focus on evaluating
meaning centred interventions on immunity and
vitality.

▼ This study followed one male secondary school cohort over three years, prior and during a positive education implementation at their school. The purpose of this research was two-fold. Firstly, it investigated the predictive power of Meaning in Life and Purpose in Life on the Wellbeing of this cohort. Secondly it examined whether the whole school approach towards positive education had any effect or impact on the predictors and outcome. This research was conducted as Meaning in Life and Purpose in Life have been proposed as protective factors for adolescent wellbeing in theoretical literature, however, there is a lack of empirical evidence that demonstrates this. Literature that demonstrates Meaning in Life and Purpose in Life are concepts which can successfully be taught as part of a positive education program to enhance student wellbeing is also limited. To conduct the research, a longitudinal mixed method research design was chosen. It followed a sequential exploratory mixed method approach, quantitatively measuring Meaning in Life, Purpose in Life and Wellbeing via questionnaires at four time points over two years. The quantitative findings were then used to inform the design of three semistructured focus group interviews with fifteen randomly selected participants. This study found Meaning in Life and Purpose in Life to be strong predictors of secondary boys’ Wellbeing, and, each predictor can be taught as part of a whole school approach towards positive education to enhance wellbeing. However, the effectiveness of Meaning in Life and Purpose in Life education is dependent on the successful implementation of the whole school approach. In the case of this study, Meaning in Life and Purpose in Life education could be improved by further collaboration with parents/carers/guardians, and, further teacher training on applying student-centred learning to the positive education based classes. These findings are significant as they empirically demonstrate Meaning in Life and Purpose in Life are protective factors for male adolescent Wellbeing, and, these predictors are teachable concepts that can be taught as part of a whole school approach to positive education to enhance male adolescent wellbeing.

▼ Research has increasingly appreciated the potential benefits of having a higher sense of
meaning in life for positive college student development. Drawing on Steger's (2009)
meaning development model, this study investigated the effects of a 6-week web-based intervention designed to enhance a sense of
meaning in life among college freshmen. The results from a randomized controlled trial with 285 U.S. college students (n = 142 for the intervention group, n = 143 for the control group) revealed that the rates of growth of
meaning in life within the two groups did not differ over a period of 8 weeks. The current study also examined the relationships between self-concept clarity, goal progress, and
meaning in life. Higher self-concept clarity was associated with a higher sense of
meaning in life, and this relationship was found both in between-person and within-person contexts. Additionally, the changes in self-concept clarity and
meaning in life were positively related over the course of 8 weeks. Higher goal progress was associated with a higher sense of
meaning in life in a between-person context. Overall, these results suggest that self-knowledge and goal pursuit serve as a firm context for cultivating a sense of
meaning. Finally, a higher sense of
meaning was associated with reports of fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety, but not with a higher GPA and retention to sophomore year. The role of
meaning in life in enhancing college students' mental health and educational experiences was discussed. Directions for future intervention efforts to promote a sense of
meaning in life among college students were also suggested.

purpose of this qualitative investigation was to explore the role of
meaning and
purpose in adolescent career development by examining 7th-grade students' responses to a semi-structured interview. Interviews were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) methods as described by Willig (2001). The findings supported the vast majority of the literature on the topic, contrasted with a few areas, and expanded others. In general, most participants had heard of the concepts of
meaning and
purpose in work, as well as the concept of a calling; however, many of them had not thought extensively about these topics. The students offered a variety of descriptions and definitions for each of these concepts. Continued research on the roles of
meaning and
purpose, and the infusion of
meaning and
purpose, in childhood career development can contribute to the theoretical knowledge base and practical applications of career curricula and counseling practice.

significance expressed both by my life coaching and pastoral
therapy clients as well as the need for existential
meaning
reported both in the lay press and academic literature. This study
reflected on a life that matters with a group of co-researchers in
a participatory action research context. The study has been
positioned within pastoral theology and invited the theological
discourse into a reflection of existential
meaning. Adopting a
critical relational constructionist epistemology, the research was
positioned within a postmodern paradigm. The implications for
meaning and research were explored and described. My fellow
researchers were invited to reflect on what constitutes a
meaningful life or “a life that matters” to them personally. These
stories of
meaning were explored and situated within personal
meaning histories.
Meaning discourses introduced to the discussion
of “a life that matters” were deconstructed, their effects
externalised and embedded in life long
meaning stories. In the
process outsider witnesses were introduced to these stories,
enriching these as we did. Together the research community made up
of me and my fellow researchers, reflected on the
meaning
discourses introduced to the conversation on a life that matters in
this way. These discourses included spirituality,
purpose, and
being meaningful in somebody else’s life. Only then did the group
decide that perhaps these discourses were complemented by identity
discourses. When we reflected upon the value of the research
process as
meaning enhancing action in their lives, my
co-researchers suggested that it was the reflection process which
added most value to their own experiences of meaningfulness.
Throughout the research process, the voices of literature were
invited into the conversation, exploring their perspectives on
existential
meaning. These voices acted as outsider witnesses,
authenticating the stories of meaningfulness which were introduced
by my fellow researchers. This study may serve to revive the
conversation both in the practical theology discourse and the
pastoral theology discourse. It positions existential
meaning
within an uncertainty discourse and suggests that reflexive
co-construction in the manner suggested previously, can contribute
to the
meaning enhancing multilogue.
Meaning making is introduced
in a non-totalitarian way, strongly suggesting that an experience
of meaningful living is possible even in postmodern times often
described as confusing and potentially relativistically or
nihilistically meaningless. This study creates space for
spirituality in the existential
meaning conversation; perhaps even
strongly proclaiming that it should be part of any conversation on
meaningfulness. Meaningfulness has been introduced as a local
experience devoid of the power discourses of meta narratives and
do-it-yourself recipes. Local process rather than universal content
was positioned as
meaning enhancing in the study, thus opening

▼ Many in American culture have either actively or passively adopted the idea that authenticity is one of the highest virtues, if not the highest. The cultural ideal of authenticity states that personal identity and meaning are found within oneself. Being true to ‘the real you’ is the path to meaning, pleasure, and flourishing. This way of framing personal identity proves to be insecure, unstable, and leads to a lack of flourishing. In contrast, a Christian view of authenticity provides stability and security and leads to the possibility of flourishing in this life as well as for eternity. There is a great deal that these two differing views of authenticity have in common, which provides many areas of overlap for relational and apologetic engagement. This apologetic approach is strongly relational and requires that each individual be pursuing redeemed authenticity in their lives. It also requires engaging in genuine relationships with non-Christians, which involves seeking to listen to their thoughts in order to understand their unique perspectives and opinions regarding authenticity, it’s strengths, and its weaknesses. After this information gathering is complete, appropriate apologetic arguments can be brought to bear with sensitivity and wisdom. Personal testimony, the argument from desire, moral and non-moral good, and Pascal’s wager are all very good starting points. The apologist must be prepared to have a sincerely felt discussion of God’s sufficiency to meet each individual’s need for stable authenticity and explain how Jesus is the most authentic individual that ever lived.

▼ Extant research has focused on why teachers leave the profession, but little has been done to address the reasons teachers remain or how we can help them to develop and maintain resilience. At the same time, attrition and retirement have left more mid-career teachers filling classrooms and the research on career stages has demonstrated that teachers at mid-career may be most susceptible to the negative feelings often associated with plateauing. Exploring the factors that help teachers to persevere in the face of adversity may lead to an understanding of the ways we can help them to navigate challenges as well as the necessity of building resilience alongside expectations for accountability and student achievement. This study sought to understand the role that resilience plays in three mid-career teacher’s decision to remain in the teaching profession through the conceptual lens of Ford’s (1992) Motivational Systems Theory and Ford and Smith’s (n.d.) recent theoretical elaborations that include Thriving with Social
Purpose (TSP) and TSP’s Theory of Life
Meaning. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the study participants and analyzed using a phenomenological method of data analysis. The findings reveal that resilience appears to be facilitated by an active approach goal orientation, personal optimism, mindful tenacity, emotional wisdom, and strong social
purpose goals that lead to life
meaning. The findings of this study have implications for teacher education programs that may consider developing programs to support resilience and district policy makers to offer mentoring programs and training directed toward the well-being of staff.

▼ Bakgrund: Den äldre befolkningen kommer att öka vilket innebär ett ökat behov av vård och stöd för att en bra hälsa ska kunna upprätthållas. Begreppet hälsa innefattar fysiskt, mentalt och socialt välbefinnande. Det blir allt vanligare att man även tar hänsyn till en existentiell dimension när det gäller hälsan. Interventioner riktade mot existentiell hälsa har visat positiva resultat. Arbetsterapeuters arbetsuppgift är att arbeta klientcentrerat och stärka varje patients emotionella och fysiska välbefinnande utifrån varje individs unika förutsättningar. Spiritualitet ingår som en del i varje människa och är därför en viktig del för arbetsterapeuter att beakta. Syfte: Att kartlägga och beskriva interventioner för äldre personer med fokus på existentiell hälsa. Metod: En litteraturstudie i form av en scoping review har använts. Artiklar har samlats in genom sökningar i databaserna AMED, CINAHL och PubMed. Elva artiklar har slutligen använts i arbetet och resultatet har granskats och analyserats numeriskt och tematiskt. Resultat: Interventionerna har kartlagts och beskrivits under följande kategorier: plats för interventionerna, spirituella interventioner, interventioner riktade mot mening och syfte med livet, kommunikationsbaserade interventioner riktade mot existentiell hälsa samt vårdgivarnas utbildning och utförande av interventioner riktade mot existentiell hälsa. Slutsats: Individuellt utformade interventioner riktade mot äldre personers existentiella hälsa ger ett positivt resultat i form av en bättre fysisk och psykisk hälsa. Känslan av att ha ett syfte och en mening med livet är viktig och ger individen ett ökat välbefinnande. Vidare forskning behöver utföras.
Interventions for elderly people with a focus on existential health - A scoping review.Background: The elderly population will increase, which means an increased need for care and support to ensure that good health can be maintained. The concept of health includes physical, mental and social well-being. It is becoming increasingly common to also consider an existential dimension in terms of health. Interventions aimed at existential health have shown a positive result. The duty of occupational therapists is to work client-centered and strengthen each patient's emotional and physical well-being based on each individual's unique conditions. Spirituality is part of every human being and is therefore an important part of occupational therapists to consider. Purpose: To map and describe interventions for elderly people with a focus on existential health. Method: A literature study in the form of a scoping review has been used. Articles have been collected through searches in the databases AMED, CINAHL and PubMed. Eleven articles have finally been used in the work and the result has been reviewed and analyzed numerically and thematically. ▼ Viktor Frankl’s (1985, 1988) system of logotherapy is
used by professionals in diverse settings for helping individuals
with a wide range of concerns experience more meaningful lives.
Frankl (1988) was clear regarding the types of behavior necessary
for gaining and maintaining
purpose in life (e.g., encountering
people, dealing with suffering). However, Frankl and other
practitioners of logotherapy are less explicit concerning how
individuals actually go about engaging in the necessary behaviors
for improving their subjective sense of
purpose in life. On the
other hand, other researchers have utilized Bandura’s (1977, 1997)
theory of self-efficacy for understanding the dynamics of various
behaviors. At this time, there is virtually no empirical research
looking at the association between self-efficacy and
purpose in
life. The following research initiates the exploration of the
direct relationships between several forms of self-efficacy beliefs
relevant to a college student population (i.e., college, social,
and general) and
purpose in life. The introduction begins by
detailing Frankl’s logotherapy with emphasis on the construct of
purpose in life followed by a basic overview of Bandura’s theory of
self-efficacy. Following the introduction is a review of the
empirical literature concerning
purpose in life and self-efficacy
theory. Lastly, the method, results and discussion chapters explore
the association between self-efficacy and
purpose in life. Results
supported significantly positive associations between self-efficacy
beliefs and
purpose in life. Furthermore, hierarchical regression
revealed that the measure of general self-efficacy accounted for
the greatest amount of variance in reports of
purpose in life.
Regression analyses also revealed that after general self-efficacy,
college and social self-efficacy accounted for modest, but
significant, additional, unique variance in participants’ reports
of
purpose in life. Implications, limitations and directions for
future research of the study are discussed.

▼ Through two inductive qualitative studies, this
dissertation explores the surprising emergence, and members’
subsequent responses, to value-laden claims regarding “why we
exist” – what members themselves and scholarship refers to as
organizational
purpose. Study One finds that, although unintended,
the implementation of specific practices within this organization
generated powerful emotional energy amongst members. Leaders
subsequently grafted this energy into organizational symbols and
engaged in
meaning-making to articulate what this energy meant for
why the organization existed. This study advances theories of
organizational identity formation and Selznick’s institutionalism
by highlighting an alternative unit of analysis focused on features
of shared experiences rather than discourse, documenting an
alternative generative mechanism focused on emotional energy, and
recasting leaders not as ideological visionaries engaged in
sensegiving, but by setting in place conditions to build, harvest,
and articulate emotional energy. Study Two examines members
subsequent responses to these value-laden claims, finding that
members either broadly rejected claims finding them akin to a
desired projected image or broadly accepted claims finding them to
be real and implicating of the organization itself. These responses
varied depending on various ways members construed the credibility
of the organization, as well as the plausibility of the
organization’s claims. This study advances theories of how members
accept or reject organizational meanings by highlighting the ways
in which members anthropomorphize organizations – treating them as
if they were human beings – and evaluating claims in light of what
they see as organizational traits, motives, and intentions. I
addition, this study advances theory by identifying the critical
importance of perceiving how products and services – “what we do” –
is linked to claims regarding “why we exist.”

purpose in life and their self-reported risky substance use and sexual behavior was investigated. Participants from a northwestern university (
N = 174) answered questions online from questionnaires measuring
meaning in life, alcohol use, substance use, sexual risk behavior, and social desirability. A MANCOVA analysis was conducted. The results demonstrated no statistically significant effects. Strengths and limitations of the study as well as directions for future research and therapeutic interventions are discussed.

▼ A growing body of research suggests that
purpose in life may provide a point of intervention to improve the health behaviors and health of the large segment of adults throughout the world who are progressing into old age. Researchers have recently documented robust associations between
purpose and enhanced health behaviors and outcomes. Preliminary studies also indicate that
purpose can be systematically enhanced. Further research examining the connection between
purpose, health behaviors, and outcomes is needed to guide the design of novel and low-cost prevention and intervention programs. To date, little research has investigated
purpose in life’s association with cardiovascular health or the possible mechanisms behind this link. In four distinct but linked papers, I use data from the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults over the age of 51 to examine this research gap.
The first and second studies examined the connection between
purpose and cardiovascular health. Each unit increase in
purpose (on a 6-point scale) was longitudinally associated with a decreased risk of stroke (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.67-0.91) and myocardial infarction (OR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.57-0.93), even after adjusting for an array of covariates. The third study examined a potential mechanism behind the
purpose and health connection and tested whether higher baseline
purpose predicted increased use of six preventive health care services over time. Results showed that higher
purpose predicted higher use of cholesterol tests, mammograms, pap smears, prostate exams, and colonoscopies, but not flu shots. The fourth study used structural equation modeling to longitudinally examine if four health behaviors mediated the association between
purpose and myocardial infarction. Results showed that only physical activity (β = -.026; 95% CI = -.042, -.009) and smoking (β = -.016; 95% CI = -.035, .004) mediated the association between
purpose and myocardial infarction, while sleep quality and cholesterol tests did not. Taken together, these studies expand the literature by enhancing our knowledge about the association between
purpose and cardiovascular health. These results are also the first to illuminate how health behaviors mediate the association between
purpose and cardiovascular disease.

▼ As over 40,000 Canadian service-personnel returned from the war in Afghanistan, more than one third believe they did not make a successful transition. This study inquiries into the lived-experience of Canadian Veterans who have made this transition and demonstrates how difficult transition experiences can contribute to suicidal ideation among Veterans. The vast majority of research on suicide among Veterans focuses on the impact of mental disorders such as Post-traumatic Stress and Major Depressive Disorders, resulting from traumas incurred on deployment. Discussions of difficult social transitions run parallel to this research on suicide. Research on Canadian Veterans in transition to civilian life highlights the negative effect of losing one’s tightly formed communal bonds when leaving the military (Black and Papile, 2010). In addition, Veteran Affairs Canada’s Life After Service Studies (2014) have found that compared to the general Canadian population, Regular Force Veterans are less likely to have a sense of community belonging and are less often satisfied with life. The purpose of this dissertation is to connect the literature on suicide with research on issues related to social belonging during transition. A concept of transitional injury is developed to bridge this gap and build on current understandings of suicidal ideation among Veterans. This research employs semi-structured qualitative in-depth interviews with 35 Canadian male Veterans who deployed to Afghanistan. Following the interviews, a thematic analysis was conducted to understand the major social barriers individuals face as they transition into civilian occupations and family life. Durkheim’s theory of suicide is applied to this contemporary social phenomenon to demonstrate the relevance of his sociology of morality in light of recent developments in the field of suicidology.

▼ This thesis presents a cross-sectional study of psychological meaning making processes involving religious beliefs and the construction of a sense of purpose in life. Previous research has studied the connection between religiosity and purpose in life, but has failed to adequately represent the multidimensionality of meaning and religion, resulting in a lack of understanding of the psychological processes involved in the construction of a sense of purpose in life. The purpose of this study was to research the connection between specific religious beliefs and a sense of purpose in life in individuals aged 25-40, by testing one hypothesis: There is a significant, positive correlation between the strength of religious belief and purpose in life, and answering two research questions: 1. What specific religious beliefs show a significant correlation to purpose in life?, and 2. How are religious beliefs used in a meaning system for the construction of purpose in life? The study employed a two-phase, mixed methods sequential exploratory design, and a meaning system theory framework, complemented by additional theoretical perspectives in phase 2. The weighting of the data was on the first, qualitative phase of the study and the data were mixed in the final, joint analysis of both types of data. Phase 1 consisted of a survey, measuring the strength of religious beliefs (measured by the BVS scale) and sense of purpose in life (measured by the LAP-R and one item of the WHOQOL-BRIEF). The survey was completed by 40 respondents who self-identified as Christian and were members of various Christian congregations in the city of Stockholm and surrounding areas. The results of phase 1 of the study firstly showed a significant, moderate, positive correlation between the strength of religious belief and purpose in life, confirming the hypothesis. The results also showed that purpose in life was positively and significantly correlated to a belief that God is an all pervading presence (tau = 0.35, p<0.05), belief in forces for evil in the universe (tau = 0.40, p<0.01), belief that human physical contact can be a spiritual experience (tau = 0.27, p<0.05), belief in life after death (tau = 0.31, p<0.05), belief that one's life has been planned out (tau = 0.33, p<0.05), belief that there is a heaven (tau = 0.30, p<0,05), belief that the human spirit is immortal (tau = 0.30, p<0.05), and belief that there is a God (tau = 0.32, p<0.05). Phase 2 consisted of interviews with 9 of the survey respondents, yielding qualitative data that were analysed through an interpretative framework based on two hermeneutic theories. ▼ This thesis aimed to investigate generational differences in the frequency and importance of meaningful work in employees based on the 7 facets of the Map of Meaning. Hypotheses were tested through Analysis of Variance of secondary data. 395 participants self-reported levels of meaningful work on the Comprehensive Meaningful Work Scale. Results indicated that Generation Y had significantly lower levels of meaningful work. Generation Y had significantly lower levels of Unity (importance), Serving (frequency and importance), Expressing full potential (frequency), Reality (frequency and importance) and Inspiration (frequency). Significant differences occurred mainly between Generation Y and Baby boomers, with some significant differences between Generation Y and Generation X and no significant differences between Generation X and Baby boomers. Results showed that overall frequency and importance levels were significantly lower for Generation Y. Overall frequency levels were lower than overall importance levels, which suggests that employees’ desire for meaningful work may not be satisfied. In light of this evidence, it is suggested that to improve organisational outcomes such as engagement, retention and performance, managers should provide opportunities for employees to engage in meaningful work with particular focus on Generation Y. Employees themselves should take responsibility to find meaning in their own work and life because engagement in meaningful activities can lead to satisfaction, belonging, fulfilment and a better understanding of one’s purpose in life.

purpose of this study was to examine the way in which good mentorship relationships aid in the sense-making processes that shape students' development of a larger narrative. Through specific practices, mentors guided their mentees' sense-making processes by providing wisdom, alternate perspectives, and good questions, which caused their mentees to reframe their current circumstances, and a more cohesive narrative to take shape. Multiple means of data collection were used to inform and enrich my study, including two different means of gaining responses from my participants: open-ended surveys and interviews. This data was analyzed using the grounded theory method (Corbin & Strauss, 1990). In presenting my findings, I tried to maintain the uniqueness of each mentorship narrative while maintaining consistent themes than ran across all the narratives. I concluded this study by offering specific suggestions for mentors in Christian and secular institutions of higher education.

▼ Does goal attainment relate to the development of meaning in life and psychological well-being? If so, do these relationships depend on the nature of the goal and why one pursues it? This study sought to generalize the relationship between goal attainment and subjective well-being to meaning in life and psychological well-being, and test whether goal contents and motives moderate this relationship. At two times about seven weeks apart, 360 undergraduates rated their meaning in life and subjective and psychological well-being. All well-being variables loaded on a single general factor of well-being. Further results replicated evidence of the relationship between subjective well-being change and goal attainment, and generalized it to meaning in life and psychological well-being, but not to autonomy or purpose. This evidence offers new support for theories describing goals as sources of meaning, though the causal direction of this connection remains unestablished. In addition, the results of moderation analyses concord with prior research that demonstrates not all goals relate equally to well-being change or meaning in life. However, these results also pose challenges to the finer points of these theories that describe the inequalities among goals in terms of their supposed service to well-being. Many direct relationships and goal attainment moderators from the literature on self-determination theory failed to replicate, extrinsic motivation being the primary exception to this surprising trend of null results. Mixed results also emerged for theories regarding other goal characteristics. Retrospective ratings of environmental support and inter-goal facilitation (versus conflict) moderated the relationship of goal attainment with overall well-being change, and environmental support related to well-being change directly. Time frame, willingness to invest, extrinsic motivation, and overall self-determination predicted changes in well-being directly, but no other motives or characteristics did so prospectively. Only extrinsic motivation and expectations of success prospectively moderated the relationship between goal attainment and well-being change. This relationship with attainment held across most varieties of goal content, most notably vanishing with goals participants identified as financial in nature, though independent judges' categorizations of goal content did not support this distinction. Furthermore, important limitations to the evidentiary value of the research paradigm have gone unacknowledged in prior literature, as discussed last.

▼ The happiness of managers is an important research theme for several reasons. Managers spend most of their working day with people, are constantly interacting with various social systems and are role models for happiness in organisations. Furthermore, happiness (in terms of feeling and functioning well) is associated with mental health and positive organisational outcomes. The prevalence of positive mental health is relatively low, with less than a third of the population experiencing high mental health. Research about happiness is necessary given that gains in mental health predict declines in mental illness. Two conceptualisations of happiness, namely authentic happiness (Seligman, 2002), and flourishing (Keyes, 2005) include dimensions of feeling and functioning well. No studies have been conducted regarding the happiness of managers in South Africa. Therefore, research is necessary to investigate the factors associated with happiness, as well as the pathways to managers’ happiness. Psychological need satisfaction is an important pathway through which social-contextual variables impact happiness of people. The aim of this research was to investigate the state of, antecedents and outcomes of happiness of managers in the agricultural sector in South Africa. A cross-sectional design with managers in the South African agricultural sector (N = 507) was used. The Orientations to Happiness Questionnaire, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Job Satisfaction Scale, Organisational Citizenship Behaviour Scale, Organisational Commitment Scale, Antecedents Scale, Work-related Basic Need Satisfaction Scale, Work Engagement Scale, Mental Health Continuum Short Form, Questionnaire for Eudaimonic Well-being, Work-role Fit Scale, Work-Life Questionnaire and Turnover Intention Scale were utilised. Cronbach alpha coefficients, exploratory factor analysis, Pearson correlations, multiple regression analysis, descriptive statistics and mediational analysis (Omnibus procedure) were applied. Structural equation modelling was used to test a structural model of orientations to happiness and its relation to various organisational outcomes. The results of study 1 showed that orientations to happiness (i.e. pleasure, meaning and engagement) had strong direct effects on subjective well-being, job satisfaction and organisational citizenship behaviour. Orientations to happiness impacted job satisfaction indirectly through subjective well-being. Subjective well-being had a strong direct and positive effect on job satisfaction. Orientations to happiness and subjective well-being affected organisational commitment indirectly through their effects on job satisfaction. Concerning happiness as flourishing at work, the results of study 2 showed that 3% of the managers were languishing, 48.5% were moderately flourishing, while 48.5% were flourishing. ▼ According to justice motive theory, individuals have a fundamental need to believe that the world is a just place where people get what they deserve, or to have belief in a just world (BJW; Lerner, 1977, 1980). There are several reasons why individuals need BJW that have been proposed in the extant literature (Dalbert, 1999, 2001; Hafer, 2000; Lerner, 1980; Lerner & Miller, 1978; Lipkus, Dalbert, & Siegler, 1996). In the current research, I examine two of these functions: to encourage investment in long-term goals (Callan, Shead, & Olson, 2009; Hafer, 2000; Hafer, Bègue, Choma, & Dempsey, 2005) and to reduce fear of death (Hirschberger, 2006; Pyszczynski, Greenberg, & Solomon, 1997). Moreover, I propose a new function of BJW—to provide individuals with a sense of purpose in life. Specifically, I argue that BJW provides a sense of purpose because, if individuals have BJW, then they can see the world as a place where their lives are both desirable and important. Further, having a sense of purpose in life should in turn improve subjective well-being (Ryff, 1989; Ryff & Keyes, 1995; Ryff, Lee, Essex, & Schmutte, 1994; Zika & Chamberlain, 1992). Therefore, purpose in life, or purpose anxiety, should mediate the association between BJW and well-being. I examined this proposal in four studies. For each study, I predicted that BJW would have an indirect association with positive affect, negative affect, and satisfaction with life, through purpose in life, or purpose anxiety, and that this association would be unique from those through other potential mediators in each model. My hypotheses were supported in each of the four studies. I discuss limitations, topics for future research, and implications for theory as well as reducing victim blame and supporting victims of trauma.

purpose of this study was to describe the experiences undergraduate students cite as helping them develop and articulate their
purpose in life.
Purpose in life, as a construct, is associated with many positive attributes associated with life in general, and the college experience specifically; however, it is also closely related to other concepts such as
meaning, spirituality, and vocation. For the purposes of this study,
purpose in life was defined as a set of goals or actions, informed by a belief system or set of values, that provides a sense of direction to an individual's life. This study sought to answer the question: What are the experiences of traditional-aged undergraduate students at a large, Midwestern, public university who have an articulated
purpose in life? In this way, experiences were defined as a necessary, but not sufficient, building block in developing
purpose in life.
An orientational qualitative approach was used to answer the question. Participants were identified using maximum variance and theory-based purposeful sampling. Senior students close to graduation were recruited to participate using the Student Developmental Task & Lifestyle Assessment (SDTLA; Winston, Miller, & Cooper, 1999), an online assessment that operationalized Chickering and Reisser's (1993) sixth developmental vector, developing
purpose. Twelve students with high scores on that assessment were selected to continue in the study. Face-to-face interviews focused on the experiences and relationships that helped them develop and articulate their
purpose in life.
The results were organized into three major themes: 1) support systems upon which students relied in developing
purpose in life; 2) exemplars who they sought to emulate when living their
purpose in life; and 3) the critical importance of experiential learning in developing
purpose in life. A discussion of the findings asserted that developing
purpose in life is a continual skill-building process, rather than definable end goal or product. Existing theories were connected to developing
purpose in life to provide educators ideas for helping affect the lives of students. Research implications were discussed with a call to study how individuals' multiple aspects of identity influence developing
purpose in life. Overall, this study contributes to the literature, adding breadth in specifically targeting undergraduate students and their shared experiences developing
purpose in life and depth in its confirmation of Chickering and Reisser's twenty-year-old revised theory.

voorskoolse kinders in Suid-Afrika aan die begin van die
een-en-twintigste eeu ondersoek. Hierdie huweliksfase, met sy vele
uitdagings en huwelikstake, word beskou as die fase met die laagste
huweliksaanpassing en die hoogste voorkoms van egskeiding. Die sin
en betekenis van hierdie uitdagings (spirituele intelligensie of
SQ), sowel as die emosionele belewenis, verstaan en hantering
hiervan (emosionele intelligensie of EQ), asook die rol wat dit in
huweliksaanpassing speel, is ondersoek. Eerstens is ’n vraelys
ontwikkel wat SQ-eienskappe kan meet (MMV-SQ-vraelys), naamlik: (i)
die vind van sin en betekenis in ’n gegewe situasie, (ii)
motiveringsbronne van gedrag, en (iii) die waardes wat uitgeleef
word. Data van 198 respondente het gedui op betroubaarheid van
subskale wat wissel van 0.47 tot 0.80. Bevredigende
konstrukgeldigheid is verkry deur die verhouding tussen die
subskale van die SQ-vraelys en waardeskaal te ondersoek (r het
gevarieer van 0.15; p ≤ 0.05 tot 0.54; p ≤ 0.01). Sowel
kwantitatiewe as kwalitatiewe navorsing is vervolgens gebruik. In
die kwantitatiewe navorsing is die MMV-SQ-vraelys, die
huweliks-aanpassingsvraelys van Spanier (Dyadic Adjustment Scale),
asook die SSRI (Schutte Self-Report Inventory) op 84 deelnemers
toegepas. Die deelnemers het 84 getroude persone, waaronder 34
egpare ingesluit. Die verband tussen huweliksaanpassing en EQ is
ondersoek deur korrelasies te bereken tussen die subskale van die
DAS en SSRI. Dit het geblyk dat ʼn optimistiese gemoedstemming ʼn
verband toon met al die subskale van huweliksaanpassing. Die
herkenning van die eie en die huweliksmaat se gevoelens, sosiale
vaardighede, en die toepassing van emosies blyk verband te hou met
hoër huwelikstevredenheid asook huwelikskonsensus. Sosiale
vaardighede het ook ʼn verband getoon met affeksionele uitdrukking.
EQ het egter nie ’n sterk verband met huwelikskohesie getoon nie.
Die verband tussen die subskale van die DAS is vervolgens vergelyk
met dié van die MMV-SQ-vraelys. Betekenisvolle korrelasies tussen
enkele skale van huweliksaanpassing en SQ het voorgekom, veral wat
die motiveringskaal betref: egpaarlede wie se gedrag deur die
motiveringsbron bemeestering gemotiveer word, blyk ʼn hoër mate van
huweliksaanpassing te hê, terwyl die negatiewe motiveringsbronne,
waaronder selfgesentreerdheid, drange en vrees, ’n negatiewe
verband met huweliksaanpassing toon. Min verbande is egter gevind
tussen huweliksaanpassing, en sin en betekenis (wel tussen
meditatiewe bewustheid en huwelikskonsensus, asook tussen empatiese
aanvaarding en openheid, en affeksionele ekspressie). Geen verbande
is ten opsigte van waardes gevind nie. Verskille tussen mans en
vroue se EQ en SQ is ook ondersoek, maar geen groot verskille is
verkry nie. Deur ’n meervoudige regressie is enkele verdere
