▼ Purpose: Decreasing newborn morbidity and mortality remains a serious global health challenge. For this reason, interventions like maternity waiting homes (MWHs) and the Saving Mothers, Giving Life (SMGL) initiative may improve maternal-newborn newborn health and delivery outcomes. The overarching goal of this dissertation was to explore and describe the cultural practices, knowledge, and beliefs of essential newborn care and health-seeking in the context of MWHs and the SMGL initiative in rural Zambia. Guided by the Ecological Systems Theory, this goal was met through three studies with the following aims: (1) Describe knowledge and beliefs of newborn care and illness from the perspective of rural Zambian women, community members, and health workers, (2) Examine similarities and differences in knowledge and beliefs of newborn care and illness among rural Zambian women, community members, and health workers, (3) Explore the social and cultural factors that are associated with the ways women seek newborn care to identify traditional and professional newborn care practices in rural Zambia, (4) Compare maternal knowledge of newborn care in two groups of women in rural Zambia, and (5) Advance an understanding of maternal-newborn delivery outcomes for women referred from health facilities with and without MWHs to the district referral hospital. Methods: Study 1 used focus groups (n=646), comprised of community members (n=208), health workers (n=225), and women with babies younger than 1-year-old (n=213) collected between June and August 2016 in two rural Zambian districts. A semi-structured guide was used to collect data on cultural beliefs and health-seeking practices in communities with MWH and non-MWH facilities. Study 2 employed a quasi-experimental two-group comparison (n=250) design using a face-to-face survey approach to determine whether MWH use impacted maternal knowledge of newborn care. For Study 3 (n=234), a retrospective record review of district-level data recorded by healthcare providers for the Zambian Ministry of Health was performed to compare maternal-newborn delivery outcomes for cases referred from five health facilities (n=142) with and five without MWHs (n=92) to a single rural Zambian district referral hospital for delivery. Results: The following themes emerged independently from each of the focus groups in Study 1: from women with infants younger than 1-year-old, (1) traditional newborn protective rituals; from community members, (2) strong sense of family and community protecting the newborn, and from health workers, (3) preservation of dignity. A fourth theme, essential newborn care, was common among all groups. Study 2 found rural Zambians have an understanding of WHO guidelines whether or not they used an MWH. In Study 3, among all referrals across ten facilities in the case series, more came from facilities with a MWH than from those without MWHs (60.7% MWH vs. 39.3% non-MWH). ▼ Ethiopia is one of the five nations that bear the global burden of nearly 50% maternal mortalities and newborn deaths. Cause-specific maternal mortality and newborn death information are vitally important for prevention, but little is known about the causes of deaths. Many maternal mortalities and newborn deaths occur at home, outside the formal health sector, and few are attended by qualified medical professionals. Despite the fact that, non-medical factors are often more important in determining whether a woman/newborn lives or dies than the medical cause of death itself. This study determines and explores factors contributing to maternal mortalities and newborn deaths in Ethiopia with the aim of developing a community-based model for averting maternal mortalities and newborn deaths in Ethiopia. The study was organised in three phases. In Phase 1, a community-based-retrospective approach using explorative, descriptive and contextual study design, combining both qualitative and quantitative methods (mixed methods) were used to make an in-depth investigation and analysis of the circumstances and events surrounding individual cases of maternal mortality and newborn deaths. The result of the study revealed various direct and indirect as well as possible contributing factors to maternal mortalities and newborn deaths which outlined bases for forwarding Phase 2 of the study called concept analysis. In Phase 3, a prototype model was developed according to Chinn and Kramer’s approach to theory generation: initially, based on the empirical perspectives of the study, concept analysis was conducted. The structure and process of a model to avert maternal mortality and newborn death were described; and, six survey list; namely, agent, recipient, context, procedure, dynamic and terminus of Dickoff, James and Wiedenbach (1968) form the basis for development and description of a model for averting maternal mortality and newborn deaths in Ethiopia. Impediment in receiving prompt, adequate and appropriate care were common problems encountered even after reaching an appropriate medical facility. For any attempt to attain a significant reduction in maternal mortality and newborn death, the health care system in Ethiopia must assume its tasks to institute critical changes in both the structure and process of health care delivery services. It is considered an individual and subjective experience generally has been described in the literature about in the neonatal stage a lot. This study has descriptive and exploratory character with a qualitative approach. The study has with objectives to analyze the performance of the nursing technicians working with newborns admitted in the ITUN, seeking to describe the perception of the nursing technicians about the pain, identify the parameters used for the detection and evaluation of pain in them, trying to describe the ons of this team about the pain in the newborns in ITUN. The subjects are nine nursing technicians of the ITU of the Parenting School Januário Cicco in Natal-RN, engaged in direct assistance to newborns in the ITU, on the turn of the morning, which was prepared to participate in the search. The collection of the data was conducted through a structured interview with tree questions; through a non-participatory observation with a structured roadmap and were used to record and pass on call was also as a way of obtaining data. The start of the collection made after the assent of the Ethics Committee / UFRN in November, 2007. The speakings have been transcribed and data read extensively to obtain categories.The analysis of the content made in terms of Bardin. Emerged three main categories of significance: Perceptioning of pain in newborns; Caring for the newborns with pain; Registering the pain in the newborns. A nursing technicians identifies the pain in the newborns, for the most part, so empirical, using signs of behavioral or physiological changes in isolation, giving little emphasis to the environment and to respect that the newborns is inserted. It was found that the attitudes cited by subjects of the search before the newborns with pain, are for the most part non-pharmacological actions such as sucking nutrient not, a proper positioning and measures of comfort, however pharmacological actions have also been reported.These is also the absence of records of nursing records in the report of pain and actions to minimize them and, in records and for the passage of call. The subjects are nine nursing technicians of the ITU of the Parenting School Januário Cicco in Natal-RN, engaged in direct assistance to newborns in the ITU, on the turn of the morning, which was prepared to participate in the search. The collection of the data was conducted through a structured interview with tree questions; through a non-participatory observation with a structured roadmap and were used to record and pass on call was also as a way of obtaining data. The start of the collection made after the assent of the Ethics Committee / UFRN in November, 2007. The speakings have been transcribed and data read extensively to obtain categories.The analysis of the content made in terms of Bardin. Emerged three main categories of significance: Perceptioning of pain in newborns; Caring for the newborns with pain; Registering the pain in the newborns. A nursing technicians identifies the pain in the newborns, for the most part, so empirical, using signs of behavioral or physiological changes in isolation, giving little emphasis to the environment and to respect that the newborns is inserted. It was found that the attitudes cited by subjects of the search before the newborns with pain, are for the most part non-pharmacological actions such as sucking nutrient not, a proper positioning and measures of comfort, however pharmacological actions have also been reported.These is also the absence of records of nursing records in the report of pain and actions to minimize them and, in records and for the passage of call. ▼ Background: Breastfeeding is the most nutritious, safest, and most economical and environmentally sound way for a newborn to be fed. Almost 50% of women who wish to breastfeed give up before six months (CDC, 2014). The most common causes of this is a lack of support and knowledge (Bonuck, Stuebe, Barnett, Labbock, Fletcher, & Bernstein, 2014). Evidence has shown that increased support and in the primary care setting drastically improves breastfeeding (Bonuck et al., 2014). This is through prenatal education and postpartum support groups, all of which can be provided in a primary care setting. Objective: The purpose of this project was to develop a breastfeeding support intervention at a women’s health clinic to provide more extensive breastfeeding education and support during the prenatal period. Design: This project evaluated the effectiveness of an educational intervention through quantitative survey assessments. This project was also categorized as a quality improvement project and guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework. Setting: Sinai Community Care is a small community clinic with affiliations with Sinai Hospital, a local, community hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. This clinic consists of two medical doctors and three certified nurse midwives who oversee the practice. This clinic sees a variety of patients, however a majority, almost 80%, are younger than 40 years old, African American, unmarried women. Participants: 10 women in their prenatal Centering Pregnancy Group that attend monthly meetings met the project’s inclusion criteria. Of these 10 women, nine of them were African American, eight were single while two are married, and five of the 10 had attempted to breastfeed before but had been unsuccessful for the full duration of six months as recommended. Measurements: Data collection for this project was done through surveys distributed during the educational intervention. A paired T-test was used to determine statistical significance of this difference in breastfeeding intention, breastfeeding knowledge, confidence in breastfeeding, and helpfulness of the program itself. Results: On the post- survey following the educational intervention, 60% of women planned to breastfeed exclusively, with 40% still planning on using some formula. 100% of the women answered they are now somewhat to very comfortable with breastfeeding and a further 100% indicated that they knew how to find resources for help in the postpartum period. Those findings that were considered statistically significant were the changes in comfort level with breastfeeding and the knowledge of postpartum support changes, supporting that this intervention achieved two of its aims to increase comfort level and knowledge concerning breastfeeding. ▼ Since 2004, the Government of Nepal has sought to increase availability of comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care (CEONC) services at district hospitals. However, significant and persistent bottlenecks exist in the health system which prevent effective scale-up. A “quick fix” strategy to address bottlenecks and ensure that hospitals had resources to deliver CEONC 24/7 was the creation of a “CEONC Fund” to “top-up” routine hospital budgets. The intention was the CEONC fund should only be used for CEONC services, not for any other hospital purpose. In 2015, the government decided to include the fund as a long-term policy and expand its availability to all district hospitals. However, routine data on fund utilisation and service data is limited. What is available indicates that utilisation varies substantially by hospital and actual provision of CEONC services also varies widely. This study aimed to understand why some district hospitals achieve a better provision of CEONC services than others. It employed a multiple case study design, purposefully selecting four district hospitals using an extreme case selection framework. It triangulated data from the districts with semi-structured interviews from central level key informants. The study results show provision of the fund to hospitals has limited impact on CEONC availability. Several other factors in hospitals and the health system have greater influence on uptake of funding and service availability. The conclusion is, not only is a CEONC fund grant alone insufficient to ensure service availability, several other critical factors need to be taken into consideration to ensure that CEONC services are consistently and universally available. CEONC availability is heavily influenced by the quality of leadership and management of the hospitals and their capacity to maintain or develop the service as financial resources permit. Therefore, the fund’s utility as a sole mechanism to improve CEONC services is limited.

▼ Experiences of women regarding unexpected neonatal resuscitation were studied in this research. The objective of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of labouring women whose babies required unexpected resuscitation at birth. Recommendations were made based on the findings of the study. Labour and birth do not always go as well as expected as deviations could happen at any of the four stages of labour. Midwives tend to focus on the neonate when resuscitation is needed and leave the mother unattended and wondering what is happening as they rush away with the neonate. The situation motivated the researcher to conduct the study. The focus was on the experience of during the time of resuscitation. The study is qualitative, and exploratory, descriptive, contextual and narrative research approaches were used to reach the objective. The research population included women who delivered in the identified site from six hours to six weeks post delivery period. Inclusion criteria were the following: Women must have attended antenatal care at least four times. Their pregnancies were categorized as low risk. The ages of the women were 18-35 years. Gestational age was 38-41 weeks. The neonate should have been resuscitated successfully and admitted for observation in the nursery. Non-probability, purposive sampling was used. Data was collected by conducting semi-structured one-on-one interviews using a tape recorder. The site for the study was a public hospital, and the managers and operational midwives were used as gatekeepers. Fifteen participants gave permission to participate in the study willingly and were interviewed individually and anonymously. The interviews were transcribed, and Creswell’s data analysis spiral image was used. The period for data collection was seven months in one academic year. An independent coder’s services were utilized to increase the trustworthiness of the findings. The trustworthiness of the study was also ensured by conforming to Lincoln and Guba’s model of trustworthiness. Strategies used to ensure trustworthiness were credibility, transferability, dependability and conformability. The researcher maintained the ethical standards for conducting research by adhering to ethical principles, such as human rights, beneficence and justice. Confidentiality was maintained by using numbers instead of names, and only the researcher knows the participants’ names. Only the researcher, supervisor and the independent coder have access to the information. The data is kept in a locked cabinet and will be kept for the next five years following the publication of results. Two main themes emerged from the data analysis with each having two sub-themes Mothers verbalized varying emotions regarding their neonates’ inability to breathe properly. Mothers verbalized the importance of receiving support and information from midwives. For the quantitative analyses, data were obtained from the South Sudan House- hold Health Survey second round (SSHHSII) carried out in 2010 that used the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) methodology developed by UNICEF. The logistic regression analysis (Chapter 4, 5 and 7) and multinomial logistic regression analysis methods (Chapter 6) were used. All statistical analyses were carried out using STATA/MP version 12. For the qualitative analyses, data were derived from a study conducted in Juba County, Central Equatoria State, South Sudan. The study participants involved were mothers and their partner, healthcare providers and trained traditional birth attendance. About 63 in-depth interviews were audio recorded and then transcribed. All the data were manually managed and a list of topical codes was developed followed by a content and thematic analysis (Chapter 8 and 9). Results Chapter 3 Identified the barriers and challenges of promoting maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) gains, and identifies priorities that will contribute to addressing the Millennium Development Goals and the emerging health priorities for the post-2015 development agenda. Chapter 4 indicates that the prevalence of nonuse of antenatal care services in South Sudan were significantly higher among mothers who were in polygamous relationships, illiterate mothers, mothers who had limited knowledge of a newborns’ danger signs and those residing in Warap and Jounglei states. Chapter 5 shows that the use of skilled birth attendance at delivery was determinate by household wealth, place of residency, access to at least 1–3 antenatal care (ANC) visits during pregnancy, maternal education and mothers who experienced three and more complications during pregnancy. Chapter 6 indicates higher odds of unattended home birth among never-married single mothers, uneducated mothers, those with first birth order, those who never attended ANC visits and those who experienced lower quality of ANC services. In addition, household poverty, lacking knowledge about obstetric danger signs, and lacking experience with pregnancy complications were associated with unattended home birth. Chapter 7 identifies the determinants of neonatal, infant and under-five mortality in South Sudan. ▼ Early onset pediatric obesity has become a major health concern in the United States. Pediatric obesity can lead to childhood hypertension, type II diabetes, and orthopedic problems. Currently, in the United States one in seven low-income preschools are overweight or obese. One of the key contributing factors to early onset childhood obesity is how children are socialized to the eating and mealtime environment. Maternal feeding styles play an integral role in how children are socialized to the eating and mealtime environment. The purpose of the this study was to determine the extent to which maternal beliefs and behavior regarding the child's body weight status influenced the child's actual weight beyond the known risk factors for childhood obesity. To test the central hypothesis of the study four specific aims were pursued. Guided by the theory of dependent-care the study utilized a descriptive correlational research design. The sample was 126 mother/child dyads recruited from a southeastern Michigan Head Start program. Each mother completed a research packet that contained a demographic data sheet, a maternal beliefs survey, a child activity survey, the Parental Feeding Style Questionnaire, the Caregiver Feeding Style, and the Child and Diet Evaluation Tool. A total of 170 packets were distributed and a total of 130 packets were returned for a response rate of 75%. Four packets were eliminated from data analysis due to missing data leaving a total of 126 packets included in data analysis. Overall, results indicated that maternal beliefs such as nutritional knowledge and belief about the child's eating style were significantly associated with maternal feeding style. The maternal behavior of the authoritative feeding style was significantly associated with the child's health. The results provided support for the theoretical linkage between the dependent-care agency and dependent-care behaviors. Overall, the study provides a description of maternal believes and behaviors related to the body weight status of a preschool-aged child. The study provides new information about the Caregiver Feeding Style Questionnaire and the Parental Feeding Style Questionnaire. Lastly, the study provides a some support for the theory of dependent-care and theoretical linkages that can be utilized in future studies. Advisors/Committee Members: Rosalind Peters.

▼ Childbirth is a necessary stressor. It prepares the infant for extrauterine life, and prepares the mother for lactation and safe return to the non-pregnant state. However, added stressors can have repercussions. This study aims to describe added stressors (including prenatal maternal socio-demographic and psychological factors) affecting mode of delivery (MOD), and the effect of MOD on mother-infant health at one month postpartum.Approximately 150 first-time, English-speaking, expectant mothers, at least 18 years of age, recruited from San Francisco, California prenatal clinics, participated in a postpartum intervention sleep study. Women were excluded if they had a sleep or mood disorder, or worked nights. This is a secondary analysis of these data.Prenatal maternal socio-demographic and risk factors (depression, anxiety, attitudes/adjustment, perceived stress) were evaluated by MOD outcome using analysis of variance (ANOVA), t-tests, Mann Whitney U, and Kruskall-Wallis. Labor induction/augmentation was evaluated by maternal report of non-reassuring fetal status (NRFS) with NRFS as the key outcome, analyzed by Chi-Square andlogistic regression. Lastly, MOD was evaluated for effect on maternal symptoms of depression and anxiety, infant temperament rating, infant sleep, and breastfeeding continuation at one month using ANOVA and Chi-Square statistics.Prenatal depression and anxiety symptoms were not associated with MOD (normal vaginal, instrument vaginal, cesarean in labor, or scheduled cesarean). Mothers with a prenatal "attitude toward baby" score that was more positive were more likely to have an unplanned cesarean birth. A scheduled cesarean birth was more likely in older women and those with higher pre-pregnancy BMI. Maternal reports of NRFS were associated with induction/augmentation. One month postpartum measures of maternal symptoms, maternal adjustment, infant temperament, and breastfeeding did not differ by MOD. However, according to maternal diary entries, cesarean-born infants slept an average of one hour more during the day than infants born vaginally.These findings provide preliminary indication that prenatal attitude toward baby plays a role in MOD, induction/augmentation is associated with increased NRFS, and cesarean birth is associated with increased infant sleep at one month. Nurses should develop and test interventions to minimize prenatal and labor factors that unnecessarily add to delivery stress.

▼ Parent activation is a form of collaborative involvement through which the parent becomes willing and vested in making healthcare decisions that minimizes risks that their infant faces (Bodenheimer, 2005). However, parent activation has not been explored in mothers of preterm neonates. This study was a sub-study of a large, longitudinal development and validation design led by a PhD researcher. The focus of this particular study was to perform a comprehensive literature review on the topic, assist in the scale modification, and independently perform a Delphi round to examine the content validity of the newly developed Late-preterm Screening and Multidisciplinary Risk Assessment and Parent Activation Scale, using two panels of judges. A sample of mother and nurse expert judges rated the instrument’s items for clarity, relevance, and fit utilizing a fourpoint Likert scale. Content validity indices for each item were calculated and items with an I-CVI lower than 0.78 were deleted or modified (Lynn, 1986; Schilling et al., 2007) after items were reviewed by the research team and a consensus was reached on whether to modify or delete those items. Results demonstrated that the I-CVIs for 35 of 41 items ranged between 0.9 and 1 for all three categories for both mother and expert judges, with some of the 41 items needing minor modification. One item had I-CVIs lower than 0.78 for all three categories for the expert judges. However, this item had I-CVIs greater than 0.95 for the mother judges and required major modifications. The combined Scale-CVI for mother and nurse experts was 0.97. ▼ Abstract Breastfeeding can provide many health benefits for both mother and baby. To increase the health benefits for patients, a change project will be implemented to increase the rates of exclusive breastfeeding for postpartum patients. The project will be focusing on teaching and be providing information on health benefits of exclusive breastfeeding. Our project is aiming to increase the rates of exclusive breastfeeding by providing lactation consultants during night shift. Surveys and interviews were conducted pre-program and found most patients are unaware of the health benefits of breastfeeding and the lactation consultant services provided by the hospital. The method used to assist in implementation of this project was Lewin’s Change Theory. This theory focuses on three stages to best help change projects. The first stage is unfreezing; the phase focuses on the recognition of a problem within the facility. The second stage is moving; this process involves in-depth discussion to cultivate this new project. The last phase is refreezing, in this stage, the new process has begun implementation. This stage is vital in the sustainability of this project. A Root Cause Analysis was explored to substantiate the need for this project. This analysis showed that our patients’ lack of knowledge and information provided along with the negative social norms were causative factors in our patients’ hesitancy for exclusive breastfeeding. A cost analysis was conducted and found that hospitalization for an infant who is breastfed exclusively will cost 0 for breast milk, while infants on formula will cost approximately 0.19 per ounce. There was not an opportunity to evaluate this project due to many contributory factors in implementation. There have been many discrepancies in different departments and between day and night shifts, which caused a delay in the execution of this project. Further clarification on discrepancies between shifts and departments is needed to gain success with this project. Once this project is fully functional it is anticipated that there will be a 20% increase in exclusive breastfeeding rates, and a positive patient outcome is expected. Patient satisfaction scores will be gathered at the six-month mark to measure the success of this project. The summation of this project will be to increase exclusive breastfeeding rates for patients in postpartum, which is beneficial for the health of both mother and baby.

A dor é uma experiência sensitiva e emocional desagradável associada ou relacionada à lesão real ou potencial dos tecidos. É considerada uma sensação individual e subjetiva e de um modo geral, muito se tem descrito na literatura a seu respeito na fase neonatal. Este estudo teve caráter descritivo-exploratório com uma abordagem qualitativa e objetivou compreender a atuação de técnicos de enfermagem que trabalham com recém-nascidos internados em UTIN, buscando descrever a percepção dos técnicos sobre a dor, identificar os parâmetros utilizados para a detecção e avaliação da dor tentando descrever as ações da equipe a respeito da dor no RN em UTIN. Os participantes são nove técnicas de enfermagem da UTIN da Maternidade Escola Januário Cicco em Natal-RN, que trabalham na assistência direta a recém-nascidos na UTIN, no turno matutino, que se dispuseram a participar da pesquisa. A coleta dos dados foi realizada através de uma entrevista estruturada em três questões, observação não participativa com um roteiro estruturado, utilização do prontuário e a passagem de plantão como forma se obtenção de dados. O início da coleta se deu logo após o parecer favorável do Comitê de Ética/ UFRN no mês de Novembro de 2007. As falas foram transcritas e os dados lidos até a obtenção de categorias. A análise do conteúdo se deu sob a óptica de Bardin. Emergiram três principais categorias de significância: Percebendo a dor no RN; Cuidando do RN com dor; Registrando a dor no RN. Os técnicos de enfermagem identificam a dor no RN, na sua maior parte, de forma empírica, utilizando sinais de alterações comportamentais ou fisiológicas de forma isolada, dando pouca ênfase para contexto que o RN está inserido. Constatou-se que as atitudes citadas pelas participantes da pesquisa diante do RN com dor são em sua maioria, ações não-farmacológicas como a sucção não nutritiva, um posicionamento adequado e medidas de conforto, no entanto, as ações farmacológicas também foram relatadas. Foi verificada ainda a ausência, de registros de enfermagem no prontuário do relato de dor e ações para minimizá-las, bem como, nos prontuários e durante a passagem de plantão. Objetivo: Implementar a Consulta de Enfermagem ao Recém-Nascido na Primeira Semana de Vida, no Domicílio. Metodologia: Foi utilizado o Planeamento em Saúde, recorrendo ao questionário de avaliação da perceção de médicos e enfermeiros. Resultados: Confirmou-se a pertinência desta consulta projetada para o domicílio, visto ser na chegada a casa que os pais se deparam com uma realidade não idealizada. Results: The relevance of this home consultation was confirmed, since it is on the arrival at home that parents face a new reality, often not idealized. Hyperbilirubinemia is the most common problem in the newborn period requiring hospitalization and medical attention. Kernicterus and bilirubin encephalopathy, "never events", are rare but devastating disorders resulting from severe hyperbilirubinemia. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 2004 Hyperbilirubinemia Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) was developed to support an approach to decrease the number of newborns who develop severe hyperbilirubinemia and bilirubin encephalopathy. The purpose of this project was to implement and evaluate the impact of adoption of the AAP CPG in a normal newborn nursery. Anticipated clinical outcomes included a decrease in the number of serum bilirubin tests ordered and an increase in "the appropriate use" of phototherapy of healthy term newborns. The Six Step Model for Implementing Evidence Based Practice guided the clinical practice change. Following adoption of the guidelines, retrospective chart reviews were conducted for a 6 week pre-implementation and post-implementation period. Both groups were roughly equivalent in terms of the number of newborns (115) with high initial transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) levels requiring at least one confirmatory total serum bilirubin (TSB) level and the number requiring treatment with some phototherapy. However there was a significant difference between the two cohorts in terms of the number of TSBs ordered for each jaundiced newborn. In 2011, prior to implementation of the CPG, there were 199 TSBs obtained on 115 newborns with an average of 1.73 TSBs per newborn and a range of 1-7 TSBs. Forty percent of this group of newborns received 2 or more TSBs during their hospital stay. In 2012, post-implementation of the CPG, 157 TSB were obtained on 115 newborns with an average of 1.37 TSBs per newborn, and a range of 1-5 TSBs. Only 22.6% of the 2012 cohort received 2 or more TSBs before discharged. Following implementation of the guidelines, there was also a significant increase in the use of "appropriate phototherapy" (p=0.048). In summary, implementation of the AAP CPG in the newborn nursery resulted in decreased lab costs, decreased nursing time an increase in nursing autonomy and most importantly, improved newborn care in the nursery.
