▼ My dissertation focuses on the intersection of the discourses of space and place, art, religion, and politics in poetical accounts of heaven. My study investigates how authors deploy these various traditions to create a heaven that accommodates the needs of a particular audience. Heaven is, according to Yi-Fu Tuan, a "mythical place," which cannot be located. To avoid the problems of a "mythical place," we represent that location with slightly-blurred experiential knowledge or communally-sanctioned practices. The creation of heaven, I argue, does not occur ex nihilo but through a refashioning of knowledge and practices to engage audiences with descriptions of heaven. To examine this concept, I primarily analyze the descriptions of place in Pearl and Piers Plowman, while providing discussion of Paradiso, The Vision of Tnugdal, and episodes from the writings of Hadewijch that offer competing and complementing visions. This study offers an opportunity to view heaven not as simply a consistent and monolithic feature of society but as a created site. Rather than examining heaven solely as art, or only through doctrinal concerns, heaven must be considered in terms of a variety of discourses. The layering of art, politics, religion, and space and place remind readers of the medieval religious project. God, for the medieval, was not an abstract ideal but an ever-present quality of their daily existences; as God could be seen in all facets of life, so too can heaven be seen through aspects of life that seem mundane and removed from ethereal experience. The first chapter of The Creation of Heaven in the Middle Ages outlines the problem of considering heaven as a monolithic entity. By tracing the history of heaven, the chapter demonstrates that we cannot view heaven as outside of time and place; heaven responds to the needs of particular audiences. As such, heaven cannot be considered only a religious place; heaven is a place that depends upon the engagement of multiple ideas, including theories of space and place, art history, and politics. The second chapter investigates the places of the afterlife in Pearl and Piers Plowman. While similarities exist between the two, each text offers a striking vision of the afterlife; and while a cityscape, and a besieged church and tower evoke distinct impressions of heaven, the chapter examines how each of these visions forces the reader to wonder if heaven might be a viable end. The third chapter engages in how the aesthetic choices of heaven work to create meaning within the mind of the reader. The larger goals of medieval aesthetics, embodied in stained-glass windows, reflect the projects of Pearl and Piers Plowman, namely to teach through a series of highly colored and instructive scenes. The final chapter offers a view of heaven through the political atmospheres of Ricardian England, reflecting the various choices of that monarch that impacts not only earth but also the heavenly retinue. During the 14th and 15th centuries, some of the romances and epics stemming from the central Middle Ages were translated into prose at the Court of Burgundy. Among those are Chrétien de Troyes' Cligès (ca. 1176) and Gerbert de Montreuil's le Roman de la Violette (ca. 1227-1229), both of which were rewritten into prose by anonymous authors around the middle of the 15th century (ca. 1455 and ca. 1451). Although literary criticism as often only seen the documentary value of these mises en prose, the poetics of the romance went through various transformations from the 12th to the 15th century. Weaved with intertextuality, both Cligès and le Roman de la Violette originally present themselves as antiromances holding the keys to their own criticism. But as the intertextual strategies undergo massive changes, the antiromance aspects of the versified romances disappear from the rewritten works. Those are then perceived as simple stories of romance and chivalry (« d'armes et d'amour »), influencing the modern idea of the medieval romance. This thesis will examine how the strategies of self-reflexivity, evident marks of intertextuality, literary techniques and parodic games involving commonplaces and motifs of the marvellous evolve from the sources to the rewritten versions. This comparison will allow us to better define the practice of the mise en prose and see how the rewritten novels fit into a new « horizon of expectations » (Hans Robert Jauss) brought by the 15th century.

Le Moyen Âge central a vu quelques-uns de ses romans et chansons de geste être mis en prose à la cour de Bourgogne au cours des XIVe et XVe siècles. Parmi ceux-ci figure Cligès, de Chrétien de Troyes (ca. 1176), et le Roman de la Violette (ca. 1227-1229), de Gerbert de Montreuil, réécrits en prose au milieu du XVe siècle (ca. 1455 et ca. 1451) par des auteurs anonymes. Si la critique s'est souvent limitée à attribuer une valeur documentaire aux mises en prose, il n'en demeure pas moins que la poétique du roman subit, du XIIe au XVe siècle, d'importantes modifications. Pétris d'intertextualité, le Cligès et le Roman de la Violette apparaissent comme des antiromans capables de procéder à leur propre examen critique. On assiste toutefois à une véritable redéfinition des stratégies intertextuelles et parodiques dans les réécritures en prose, si bien que la dimension antiromanesque qui caractérisait les romans en vers disparaît des texte remaniés, qui s'apparentent dès lors à l'image de simple récit « d'armes et d'amour » que l'histoire littéraire a gardée du roman médiéval. Il s'agira donc de voir comment les stratégies autoréflexives, les marques d'intertextualité manifestes, les techniques littéraires et les jeux parodiques avec les lieux communs et les motifs merveilleux évoluent des « textes-sources » aux réécritures. Ce travail comparatif permettra tout aussi bien de mieux définir la pratique de la mise en prose que de révéler en quoi les romans remaniés correspondent à un nouvel « horizon d'attente » (Hans Robert Jauss) propre au XVe siècle.

The first part of this thesis is an analysis of the priest in a selection of erotic fabliaux written between the 12th and 14th centuries (Gombert et les deus clers, Le Prestre taint, Le Vilain de Bailluel and Le Prestre ki abevete). While the "anticlericalism" of the fabliaux is toned down by the differences between the types of the cleric and the priest, this analysis dwells on the figures of the deceived priest and the deceitful one. Through the study of the deceitful priest, it demonstrates that the duper offers a mise en abyme of the author and the jongleur in action, used by the fabliau to rehabilitate the fiction and to examine the power of speech and language, which helps unveil the "mecanic" of the genre and the types of medieval literature.The second part of this thesis is a narrative text that uses some traits of the drama genre to create a distance between the reader and the characters, who live in a small village where a certain lack of interest for religion rules. These inhabitants will be thrilled by the announce and arrival of a young priest, Adagio. Soon, this newcomer will become the object of all discussions and all rumors, so much so that he will exist only through others' words.

Dans un premier temps, ce mémoire propose une analyse de la poétique du personnage du prêtre dans un choix de fabliaux érotiques écrits entre les XIIe et XIVe siècles (Gombert et les deus clers, Le Prestre taint, Le Vilain de Bailluel et Le Prestre ki abevete). Tout en permettant de nuancer « l'anticléricalisme » des fabliaux par la différenciation des types du clerc et du prêtre, cette analyse s'attarde à la figure du prêtre trompé et du prêtre trompeur. Par l'étude de ce personnage rusé, elle concourt à démontrer que le prêtre trompeur constitue bien souvent une mise en abyme des figures de l'auteur et du jongleur en représentation dont se sert le fabliau pour réhabiliter la fiction et interroger la puissance de la parole et du langage, ce qui contribue à dévoiler la « mécanique » du genre et des motifs de la littérature médiévale. La seconde partie de ce mémoire, dite d'écriture littéraire, propose un texte narratif qui utilise certaines caractéristiques du genre dramatique pour créer un effet de distanciation devant le spectacle de ce village, où règne un certain désintérêt religieux, mais qui se voit heurté par l'annonce et l'arrivée d'un jeune prêtre, Adagio. Ce nouvel arrivant deviendra le sujet de toutes les discussions et de toutes les rumeurs, au point de n'exister qu'à travers la parole d'autrui.

Recognized as the first medieval instances of the romance genre, the Roman de Thebes, Roman d'Enéas, Roman de Brut and Roman de Troie (ca. 1150-1165) are based on the rewriting of Latin texts deeply rooted in history. Yet few studies have explored the relationship between these romans d'antiquité and medieval historiography, as a literary genre (estoire and historia). There has indeed been a tendency amongst critics to focus on a thematic analysis of the links between the "first romances" and history, at the expense of a more generic approach. Our task, therefore, is to show that this corpus can be defined by its conscious – and subversive – relationship with medieval historiography. By combining the Jaussian approach of the theory of genres with the methods of "New Philology", we shall first establish that the medieval readers interpreted romans d'antiquité not only as romance, but also as works of historiography. This double interpretation, confirmed on various accounts by the manuscripts, will then be explained by a poetic structure that playfully blurs the line between generic distinctions. Hence it will appear that the "first novelist" deliberately use the conventions of historiography in order to lay the foundation of a genre that will maintain a close, yet complicated, relationship with history.

Fondés sur la réécriture d'ouvrages latins et médio-latins à forte teneur historique, les romans de Thèbes, d'Éneas, de Brut et de Troie (ca. 1150-1165) signent la « naissance du roman » en empruntant leur sujet à l'histoire. Pourtant, peu d'études ont été consacrées aux liens qui se tissent entre ces romans d'antiquité et la tradition historiographique en tant que genre littéraire (« estoire » et « historia »). La critique tend en effet à approcher les rapports entre l'historiographie et le genre romanesque naissant d'un point de vue strictement thématique de sorte qu'elle néglige souvent d'interroger leurs interactions génériques. Il s'agira donc de démontrer que les premières œuvres romanesques peuvent se définir par leur rapport conscient – et subversif – au genre historiographique médiéval. En conjuguant l'approche jaussienne de la théorie des genres aux méthodes de la « nouvelle philologie », il faudra d'abord établir que la réception médiévale du corpus se laisse infléchir par une double lecture historiographique et romanesque. Cette confusion typologique, diversement relayée par le témoignage des codices, pourra ensuite s'expliquer par une contexture poétique qui se joue des distinctions génériques. Il apparaîtra ainsi que les premiers romanciers convoquent délibérément les conventions de l'historiographie pour poser un geste fondateur dans l'histoire du genre romanesque : ils érigent une frontière – poreuse – entre roman et histoire.

This dissertation demonstrates that the poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer and John Lydgate joined nonliterary medical texts in transporting medical discourse into the English language and culture. In the later-fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the production of Middle English medical and literary texts increased dramatically. These categories overlapped at the site of medical verse. I show that authors of imaginative fiction also wrote what is in effect medical verse by employing medical discourse in stand-alone poems and in passages embedded in longer works. As Chaucer and Lydgate became central in an emergent national literary canon, their texts––and the medical content they contained––enjoyed an especially broad circulation. Thus Chaucer and Lydgate participated in the Englishing and popularization of medical discourse. In the General Prologue and linking narratives of the Canterbury Tales, Chaucer satirizes academic medicine by means of its own discourse––what he calls the "termes of phisik"––and in the context of a larger thematic exploration of healing and illness in post-Black Death England. In the Knight's tale, Chaucer includes a miniature verse treatise on lovesickness (amor hereos), which, despite its brevity and satiric quality, draws learnedly from contemporary medical theory, in effect constituting one of the best-known technical works on the subject in Middle English. Lydgate's Dietary, a verse regimen of physical, spiritual, and social health, was one of the most widely circulated Middle English poems. It has been overlooked and misunderstood by scholars, however, because they have neglected to consider the poem's complex relationship with its sources and analogues and often refer to a highly unrepresentative edition of the text. By locating Chaucer's and Lydgate's creative uses of medical discourse within their textual and historical contexts, I offer new readings of their poems and reconstruct their respective roles in English medical history.

Cette thèse se propose de démontrer que la poésie de Geoffrey Chaucer et de John Lydgate s'allie à des textes médicaux non littéraires dans le processus de passage du discours médical dans la langue et la culture anglaises. Vers la fin du quatorzième et au quinzième siècle, la production de textes dans les domaines médical et littéraire en moyen anglais a augmenté de façon spectaculaire. Ces catégories de textes se sont toutefois chevauchées en regard avec la profession médicale. Dans ce travail, je montre que les auteurs de fiction imaginative ont écrit aussi de façon effective dans le domaine médical et ont employé le discours médical dans des poèmes séparés et d'autres passages ont été incorporés dans des œuvres plus longues. Comme Chaucer et Lydgate sont devenus incontournables dans le contexte littéraire national émergent de l'époque, leurs textes – et le contenu médical qu'ils contiennent – ont connu une diffusion particulièrement grande. ▼ At the end of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, when Bertilak de Hautdesert reveals Morgan le Fay’s involvement in Gawain’s quest, the Pearl Poet introduces a difficult problem for scholars and students of the text. Morgan appears out of nowhere, and it is difficult to understand the poet’s intentions for including her so late in his narrative. The premise for this thesis is that the loathly lady motif helps explain Morgan’s appearance and Gawain’s symbolic importance in the poem. Through a study of the loathly lady motif, I argue it is possible that the Pearl Poet was using certain aspects of the motif to inform his story. Chapter one of this thesis will focus on the origins of the loathly lady motif and the literary origins of Morgan le Fay. In order to understand the connotations of the loathly lady stories, it is important to study both the Irish tales and the later English versions of the motif. My study of Morgan will trace her beginnings as a pagan healer goddess to her later variations in French and Middle English literature. The second chapter will discuss the influential women in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and their specific importance to the text. It will examine Queen Guinevere, Bertilak’s lady and Morgan le Fay. This chapter will also analyze three contemporary Middle English texts: John Gower’s The Tale of Florent, Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Wife of Bath’s Tale, and “The Weddyng of Syr Gawen to Dame Ragnell.” The loathly lady motif was popular at the end of the fourteenth century, which lends evidence to the argument that the Pearl Poet was familiar with the motif. Finally, the third chapter will provide an exploration of Gawain’s role as the loathly lady’s knight and the symbolism of Gawain’s shield and green girdle, the setting of Hautdesert and the Green Chapel, and the Pearl Poet’s emphasis on family relations. Ultimately, I argue that Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is an untraditional loathly lady story that uses the motif’s themes and symbolism to emphasize the poem’s feminine landscape and the importance of Morgan le Fay. This dissertation examines the effects of maternal figures in the texts of the Auchinleck manuscript to create a better understanding of the how the collection was communicating with its female audience. The religious contexts that foreground the arguments herein are the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 and the Cult of the Virgin Mary, both of which had everyday implications for the laity. The Auchinleck manuscript, a large miscellaneous compilation, was likely compiled between 1330 and 1340 in or near London. The prevailing theory of ownership suggests that the volume was compiled under the patronage of a buyer who intended to use it in his manorial household. This framework of readership implies that women of different social statuses may have had opportunities to interact with these texts, and thus the lessons these women gleaned would be rather general, appealing to pious ideals. In the middle ages, women were categorized into three spiritual estates: maiden, wife, and widow, and of these three, virginity was valorized as the optimal state for spiritual purity, with widowhood being ranked the second best estate. For the many women in the middle ages who could not choose the path of virginity, which often meant joining a monastic community, their next best option was to get married and bring Christian children into the world. The maternal figures in the texts examined here present several models of behavior for women, encouraging them to participate in a community of Christian maternity. Through the sacrifice of their bodies, these readers are told, they can access spiritual glory. The first chapter focuses on a cluster of four extant opening texts in the manuscript to discern how maternity, literacy, and inscription together can result in mass conversion. The second chapter considers the affect upon the reader of the many narratives of the Virgin Mary and their neighboring texts. The juxtaposition between Mary, the apex of Christian femininity, and less perfect women provides accessible models of behavior for women susceptible to sin. The third chapter considers the Breton lay Sir Degaré as a case study for the issues of incest and abandonment that preoccupied the Church in the Middle Ages. The fourth chapter analyzes Lay Le Freine as a locus for the maternal community, bringing together a biological mother, a midwife, a wet nurse, and an abbess to raise a child in the Christian community.

▼ Ephesians 6:11 calls upon readers to, ‘[p]ut you on the armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil.’ This dissertation puts this verse at the center of devotional practice in thirteenth- to fifteenth-century England by showing that books and stories were often perceived as that very armor. Just as St Boniface reportedly held up a scriptural manuscript at his moment of martyrdom to protect himself from the sword, medieval readers saw their books, and the texts contained within them, as spiritual and physical protection against devilish attacks. Not only were texts adapted and manipulated by redactors for defensive reading, the form of the manuscripts themselves encouraged their readers to treat them as allegorical, even literal, shields. In order to evidence this reading practice, this dissertation explores the transmission history, textual content, and cultural contexts of two Middle English verse texts. Part I shows how ‘O Vernicle,’ a fourteenth century lyric on the arma Christi (the ‘arms of Christ’), exemplifies the ritualistic nature of defensive reading. Extant in ten rolls and ten codices, the textual presentation encourages the reader to imaginatively arm themselves with the arma Christi, turning those weapons once used against Christ into their ‘armor of God’ (Eph. 6:11). Part II focuses on the late thirteenth-century collection of sanctorale and temporale entries known as the South English Legendary. It deals predominantly with an early reader of the collection – a redactor whose ‘edits’ transformed the historical trajectory of the South English Legendary, imbued it with a defensive purpose, and shaped the way it was recopied through the fourteenth and fifteenth century. The content of both texts, made up of image/text arma Christi units and hagiographic vitae and temporale respectively, divide and compartmentalize the reading experience. This suits the defensive agenda, allowing the reader to collect ‘textual shields’ as spiritual armor. Putting on the Armor of God defines a widespread cultural practice – ‘defensive reading.’ It demonstrates not only that medieval readers consciously read certain devotional Middle English texts in order to defend themselves against spiritual evils, but also that they were copied and redacted with this purpose in mind. Ultimately it shows that, in the later Middle Ages, reading was a way of putting on the ‘armor of God’ (Eph. 6:11). ▼ This thesis explores the validity of seeing late medieval vernacular remedies as more than just utilitarian texts. Until now, most commentators have argued, or assumed, that medical recipes were conceptualised by their earliest writers and readers as texts solely designed to serve a curative or therapeutic purpose: they have looked for physical evidence of use in the manuscripts; connected particular codices to specific medical practitioners; discussed the scientific principles behind the efficacy that some remedies may have had, and explored whether specific types of cure, such as charms, were deployed by specific types of medical practitioner. My thesis does not dispute that many remedy collections were put to practical use, but argues that writers and readers conceptualised recipes in a range of other ways too. An introductory chapter explores the types of people who engaged with medical knowledge and the way recipes portray them. Then, Chapter Two uses codicological evidence, such as scribal organisation and reader annotation, to suggest that some writers and readers derived pleasure, pride or satisfaction from the acts of producing, possessing and reading remedy books, rather than using them. The next two chapters explore - first in verse (Chapter Three) and then in prose (Chapter Four) - the remedies' formal, phonetic, and linguistic features, considering the ways that they fulfil, impede or overshadow the texts' practical purpose. In this section, I also compare the ways in which the language and figurative devices used in recipes work in other kinds of writing, in order to develop a more precise understanding of the connections and distinctions between discourses. The last part of the thesis focuses on thematic connections between recipes and other text-types. In Chapters Five and Six, recurring motifs and similar attitudes to time, wonder and transgression suggest reciprocal imaginative exchanges between remedies, romances and fabliaux. Chapter Seven examines unexpected parallels between serious and parodic remedies, arguing that this blurred boundary creates interpretive challenges for readers. In these final three chapters, I hope to draw attention to an interpretive element overlooked in the recipes: the texts do not just contain instructions to be translated into real-world referents and actions; they can also bring words, forms, and ideas into play with one another, eluding straightforward interpretations as resolutely as literary texts.

▼ This dissertation studies the presence of hybridity, in both text and images, as a way of representing the different ethnic groups that resided in the Iberian Peninsula in the texts outlined above, along with a number of late-fifteenth-century and sixteenth-century texts belonging to lay and religious culture. The category of hybridity in conjunction with the construction of spaces and counter-spaces present in the texts and images of my dissertation serve as the unifying principle of this study by providing a particularly fruitful case study of ethnic representations of Jews, conversos, Muslims and moriscos in late Medieval and Early Modern Iberian cultural studies. The project highlights those images and spaces that began to be created in texts and illustrations representing Jews, conversos, Muslims and moriscos in the Spanish kingdoms in the decades that followed the statutes of blood purity in 1449, at a time when Spain’s national hegemonic project begins to emerge, and throughout the sixteenth century, during a time of imperial creation and expansion. In addition, it examines, particularly, how images previously used to depict Jews and Muslims in different textual and artistic traditions in the Middle Ages in order to illustrate religious differences began to be re-articulated in the second half of the fifteenth century to denote racial differences between that which was conceived of as autochthonous to the Iberian Peninsula, Christian and descendant of Visigoth, and that which gradually was perceived as threatening and foreign, Jews, conversos, Muslims and moriscos. The selection of texts and images of this study provides an interdisciplinary and comprehensive sample of sources while studying their historical and textual specificity. Moreover, this dissertation establishes a dialogue between texts belonging to different traditions, diatribes, polemical works, propagandistic literature, poetry, legends, sermons, and historical texts in order to demonstrate how the images of hybrids, animals and monsters were employed as a rhetoric of exclusion in some circles but also became a tool used by some conversos and moriscos in order to advocate the inclusion of ethnic groups to the Spanish hegemonic national and imperial project.

▼ While scholars have examined at length the so-called "Celestina Cycle," or works inspired by La Celestina, they have not compared the parallel reception of this fifteenth-century bestseller by Old Christian, Converso, and Morisco authors. This dissertation examines the appropriation of La Celestina and the figure of the medieval Iberian go-between, also known as the alcahueta, in four sixteenth-century texts. Chapter one discusses Francisco Delicado's Retrato de la Lozana andaluza (1514-1529) and El modo de usar el palo de la India Occidental (1527). Arguing that an examination of the links between Delicado's protagonist and the alcahueta allows us to analyze the author's challenge of cultural and religious homogeneity, the chapter also considers Delicado's medical treatise to explore how syphilis and palo santo fuel the creation of the portrait of a go-between in a transatlantic and transmediterranean context. Chapter two studies Feliciano de Silva's Segunda comedia de la Celestina (1534), focusing on Celestina’s revival from the dead. Considering both the resuscitated mediator, as well as visual aspects of the oldest surviving edition of Silva’s text, the chapter demonstrates how this (re)appropriation of the resurrection motif questions late medieval and early modern notions of blood purity. Chapter three focuses on the reception of La Celestina and the go-between in El Mancebo de Arévalo's's Tractado, or Tafsira (mid-sixteenth century). The author's recorded interviews with Nasrid Granadians and morisca women constitute the highlight of this chapter, as their anecdotes capture living memories of the last Muslim stronghold and the results of the reconquista in different areas of the peninsula. Engaging with the alcahueta as a figure that challenges prevailing notions of contamination and purity, the chapter illustrates how the go-between takes on a non-traditional dimension in El Mancebo’s work by occupying marginal spaces that are iconic to the loss of identity that accompanied Spanish Muslims’ trajectory from mudéjares to moriscos. Read together in the same critical framework, Delicado’s, Silva’s, and El Mancebo’s texts give new voice to the figure of the medieval Iberian go-between in heterodox sixteenth-century texts, diverging from prescribed codes of Catholic orthodoxy. ▼ "Reclaiming Reason" is the first full-length study of Geoffrey Chaucer's prose. Though scholars have written on the prose texts individually, the most pressing questions have yet to be considered: what, specifically, does Chaucer offer in these works, and why does he choose prose to do so? In pursuit of answers to these questions, "Reclaiming Reason" examines the politics of reading and interpretation in the late Middle Ages and discovers that through his prose works—the Boece, the Treatise on the Astrolabe, the Tale of Melibee, the Parson's Tale, and the Retraction—Chaucer models principles of interpretation for a time when access to knowledge was controlled by a variety of self-serving authorities. Indeed, these works offer readers strategies to assert their own agency, and thus intellectual autonomy, in the midst of the struggle over the power to control and ability to interpret knowledge. By offering these methods in prose, Chaucer increases the accessibility of these subjects, while demonstrating the extensive benefits of these different forms of knowing (philosophical, scientific, judicial, and religious). In the Parson's Tale, for instance, he offers the religious practice of confession and repentance as a possible path to individual salvation; in writing for a lay audience, Chaucer implies that this information equally profits secular "selves." Thus, "Reclaiming Reason" argues specifically that these prose works are essential to a comprehensive understanding of Chaucer's philosophy: that in an inherently flawed and fragmented realm, individuals can exercise authority over their choices by consciously developing habits of critical engagement. Overall, it makes a case for the recursive reading of Chaucer's work through the strategies of rational analysis that he provides in the prose. Not only does such recursion shed new light on our understanding of Chaucer's poetry, but by extension, the performance of Chaucer's methods—the act of recursion—creates a progressive dynamic between the individual and whatever machine (i.e. text, scientific device, authority) he engages with to gain knowledge.

▼ This thesis analyzes the ways in which chivalry is defined and imagined in a variety of fifteenth-century Iberian literary discourses. My primary argument is that these works codify an understanding of chivalry that emphasizes the violence and physicality of knights at the cost of courtesy and idealized virtue. The characters who attempt to abstain from violent acts—the men who try to wage war with words and displays of their rhetorical skills—fare poorly in many contemporary romances, facing harsh consequences such as death and exile. Whereas idealized men may brandish the sword and take what they want, the ability to successfully demonstrate one's level of learning is the mark of those who have no other recourse in society, such as women and effeminate men. My work establishes that this fifteenth-century representation of idealized chivalry marks a significant departure from the representation of chivalry in previous centuries, in which authors such as Alfonso X and Ramon Llull emphasized cultural refinement and virtuous acts as justifications for the privileges of knights as a social group. In the fifteenth century, I examine the theoretical discussions of chivalry by Alfonso de Cartagena and Alfonso de Palencia and the idealized representation of knights in romances such as Curial e Güelfa and those by Juan de Flores to reveal a consistent emphasis on aggressive knighthood that moves away from associations of chivalry with courtesy, piety, or gentility. This study suggests that the glorification of belligerent chivalry has important implications for social relations among Christians and marginal groups during this period. I argue that legitimization of nobility through violence includes a coded religious dimension that attacks the members of Iberian society who were assumed to abstain from aggressive behavior, particularly Jews and conversos. By contextualizing the representation of chivalry in romances within a historicized discussion, this dissertation reveals a consistent emphasis on authority legitimized through violence and a reflection of veiled forms of discrimination and prejudice that serve to further glorify the image of idealized heroism in contemporary society.

▼ Late medieval English texts often represent unfinished quests for obscurely significant objects. These works create enchanted worlds where more always remains to be discovered and where questers search for an ur-text, an authoritative book that promises perfect knowledge. Rather than reaching this ur-text, however, questers confront rumor, monstrous babble, and the clamor of argument, which thwart their efforts to gather together sacred wholeness. Yet while threatening, noise also preserves the sacred by ensuring that it remains forever elsewhere, for recovering perfect knowledge would disenchant the world. Scholarship on medieval noise often focuses on class: medieval writers tend to describe threats to political authority as noisy. These unfinished quests, though, suggest that late medieval literature’s complex investment in noise extends further and involves the very search for the sacred, a search full of opaque language and unending desire. Noise, then, becomes the sound of narrative itself. While romance foregrounds questing most clearly, these ideas appear in a variety of genres. Chapter 1 shows that in the House of Fame rumor both perpetuates and undermines knowledge, so sacred authority must remain beyond the poem’s frame. Chapter 2 juxtaposes the Parliament of Fowls and the Canon’s Yeoman’s Tale, in which lists replace missing quest-objects, the philosopher’s stone and certainty about love. Chapter 3 centers on Piers Plowman, which becomes encyclopedic as one attempt to “preve what is Dowel” leads to another, and Will never definitively learns how to save his soul, the knowledge he most wants. Chapter 4 turns to Julian of Norwich’s search for divine “mening” and her confrontation with an incoherent fiend, an anxious moment that aligns her with these less serene contemporaries. Chapter 5 argues that Thomas Malory’s elusive, noisy Questing Beast at once bolsters and undermines chivalry. The final chapter looks ahead to Book VI of The Faerie Queene, where the Blatant Beast, a sixteenth-century amalgam of the fame tradition and the Questing Beast, menaces Faery Land yet, as a figure for poetry, also contributes to its enchantment. In trying to locate and maintain the sacred, these unfinished quests evoke worlds intensely anxious about “auctoritee.”

▼ Shaping the World: The Geographies of Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Laud Misc. 108 takes a manuscript from late thirteenth-century and early fourteenth-century England as an entrance point for explorations of politics and cultural history. I read multiple scribes' contributions to Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Laud Misc. 108 (Laud 108) as a dialogue among writers and readers. This previously unrecognized conversation, in Laud 108's South English Legendary collection of saints' lives and in the romances Havelok the Dane and King Horn, reveals thirteenth- and fourteenth-century conceptions of the geographical shape of the world. It also betrays the scribes' consistent engagement with the process of creating Englishness. The Laud 108 texts define English identity against and in reference to imagined Jews and Muslims. They also contrast English people with the exotic, wondrous beings who occupy both the far and mythical east and the near, but still exotic, western lands of Scotland and Ireland.Laud 108 appears in the aftermath of the Third Crusade, the 1237 Crusade of Richard of Cornwall and in the period surrounding the 1290 expulsion of the Jews from England. Memories of the civil wars of the 1130s and 1250s still trouble English stability, and the conflict between church and state that led to Thomas Becket's 1170 death and subsequent canonization has not been forgotten. Laud 108 engages, sometimes openly, often obliquely, with twelfth- and thirteenth-century English unrest. Its saints' lives and romances hide subtle, politically dangerous allusions to English politics in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, including the civil wars of the 1130s and 1250s. Chapter 1, Shaping the World: Laud 108 as a Map, argues that Laud 108 is itself a map, parallel to contemporaneous physical maps such as the Hereford Map, and that we can use geographical and cartographical theory to determine how Laud shapes and imagines the world. In this chapter, I explore the impact of Laud 108's placement of England in the imagined map of the world. Chapter 2, Thomas Becket's Saracen Mother, examines the Laud 108 Life of Thomas Becket, the longest, most elaborately decorated section and therefore most important part of the codex. The chapter connects the nameless heathen lands from which Thomas Becket's legendary mother originates to the deeply and carefully constructed England where Thomas lives and dies. Chapter 3, "Time out of Mind" and the Jews of the South English Legendary, looks at the Laud South English Legendary (SEL)'s investment in English historical memory and asks whether the constructed Jews in the SEL can mirror actual, historical Jews in England until their expulsion in 1290, around the time of the production of the codex. Chapter 4, The Case of the Missing "Vita": Shadows of History in Havelok the Dane, extends the examination of English historical memory to the traumatic histories of civil war that may underlie Havelok the Dane and Part B of Laud 108.
