▼ Observers of structural changes in developed economies have generated widely accepted claims about the move to a society based on âknowledgeâ, âknowledge workâ and âknowledge workersâ. These claims imply a need for more detailed research on the contexts, antecedents, and consequences of âtrustâ in knowledge-based workplaces. That research is largely missing from the debates. This thesis assesses the claims regarding the knowledge worker relationship with management, which assumes high levels of trust, while more critical scholars challenge this assumption. One means of connecting the disparate theory and empirical research is used in this thesis, a thorough examination of workplacerelationships.There are three main aims for this research. The first is the development of a theoretical model that translates the claims regarding knowledge work into the expected circumstances for the relationships between workers and managers in knowledge-based workplaces. This thesis argues that the circumstances can notionally be separated into âTrustâ, âChangeâ, âManagementâ and âOrganisational Outcomesâ. Secondly, a new means of identifying knowledge workers is presented. Finally, the theoretical model is tested empirically.Phase one consisted of developing and selecting items which were capable of capturing the various circumstances, including different levels of trust within an organisation (immediate manager, business unit and organisation). Focus groups within one Australian business unit of multinational information technology (IT) organisation provided feedback on the content and useability of the survey (n=23). Phase two included a redesigned survey, including items intended to identify knowledge workers, which was tested with a broader Australian IT population (n=96).Phase three of the research was the main study where the final form of the survey was then used (n=255). Quantitative analyses were undertaken for the immediate work area, the organisation and a combined model, all using Partial Least Squares (PLS). Demographic variables (age, gender and supervisor/non-supervisor) had a negligible impact. A maximised model is described for each analysis and the possible implications for the theoretical model and knowledge based workplaces are discussed. Finally the theoretical contributions and practical implications of this research are discussed. ▼ With the past decades of a growing trend in the western-world where knowledge workers are replacing traditional workers the importance of finding ways to attract, retain and engage the former is becoming even more challenging as the preferences of this kind of workers is totally different than for other workers. Non-monetary rewards such as achievement, autonomy and feedback have for a long time been highlighted by researchers to be of importance, yet the human relations departments (HR) still seem not to have realized the importance of such rewards and while HR strategies often are focusing on total rewards as a summary of monetary and non-monetary rewards there is a lack of an uniform ranking of the importance in between them. The purpose of this thesis is to make a ranking of the non-monetary rewards being most valuable for a knowledge worker to retain them within a company. The job mobility for this group is high and failing to retain them would except for short-term costs and organizational knowledge loss risk to create a lack of competitive advantage in long-term. Based on an extensive review of literature and papers by both researchers and practitioners with aspect to motivation theories, knowledge workers and rewards a theoretical framework has been constructed derived to five propositions which have been tested in a single case study. The empirical data was collected from a case being described in-depth and consist of archival data from employee surveys during seven years of time which have been supported by interviews and observations to achieve a triangulation of data. During analysis the findings have been put in relation to the environmental factors present within the case to achieve a rich and trustworthy case study. The findings confirms earlier research that autonomy is one of the highest ranked reward for a knowledge worker but that affiliation is of equal or even higher importance. The result also indicates that the difference between knowledge workers and other kinds of workers with aspect to affiliation is low or even non-existent. The thesis has also shown that autonomy, praise/recognition and career/personal development is of far more importance for a knowledge worker than for other kind of workers which may act as an important input to HR professionals. Furthermore this thesis has by the construct of a theoretical framework based on content theories of motivation contributed with a theoretical ground to the system of total rewards defined by HR professionals.

▼ The emergence of a knowledge based economy facilitated by the globalisation has changed the rules of the game for many organisations. The most valuable assets within many organisations are no longer the physical resources but the knowledge capital. In contrary to the era of industrialisation, these assets are no longer owned and controlled by the companies but by the employees. The largest challenge for management in the knowledge economy is the need to increase the productivity of the knowledge workers. The most effective approach to increase knowledge worker productivity is by improving their level of motivation. The question for how to best motivate people in an organisation is neither new nor does it have a single clear answer. To create a situation characterised by satisfaction and motivation, focus should be on the motivator, the factors with the potential of creating long time sustainable results. Factors influencing motivation can be described as either intrinsic or extrinsic relating to their nature of effect. Traditionally, most organisations have been focusing on extrinsic motivators such as monetary incentives to increase motivation. Intrinsic motivators include factors relating to the work itself as autonomy, mastery and purpose. This study has included a survey where 355 knowledge workers have ranked 29 different motivational factors. The results show the top five factors all are typical intrinsic factors which indicate employees’ true commitment and motivation originates in the intrinsic nature of the task being performed. Another important finding from this study is each of the factors investigated can play a role in order to motivate the individuals in a group of knowledge workers. As a result of that insight, all organisations with the aim to increase knowledge worker productivity have to take the time to find out how to best motivate each single employee. One way for an organisation to increase individual employee motivation is to start paying attention to personal interests and try to direct different work tasks in accordance with that.

▼ Knowledge is recognised as a crucial resource in the knowledge-based economy; and it is believed to drive sustainable success in organizations. Knowledge management (KM) helps organizations identify, create, organize, distribute and transfer vital knowledge among employees within and across organizations. The underlying premise is that good KM leads to efficiency and effectiveness, which in turn, influences the total performance in an organization. Therefore, this study investigates the role of KM practices as they relate to projects in a South African government organisation. The problem was dwelt with by establishing research questions and objectives. In order to answer the research questions, a literature search was conducted in the area of KM to establish the KM enablers, barriers, and processes known to facilitate or hinder successful KM in organizations. This led to the identification of five enablers, including organizational culture, structure, technology, strategy and leadership, as well as the resources believed to be fundamental in the success of KM practices. Barriers to KM were identified as individual, organizational and technological. The study established four KM processes: acquisition, conversion, application and protection that were found to concur with good KM practices. A conceptual model was developed around these areas. The model assisted in developing qualitative and quantitative questions. In order to investigate the proposed research questions, the study identified a single directorate within the department of public works that is directly involved with the delivery of health infrastructure. The methodology used, which was mainly qualitative research, was conducted by using multiple-data evidences, namely: semi-structured interviews, document review; these were sourced from primary and secondary sources, as well as similar organizational best practices in KM. A total of nine interviews were conducted with individuals in managerial positions. A total of 7 of the 30 e-mailed questionnaires were completed and the data were used to supplement the qualitative data. This study used the Content-Analysis Technique approach to analyse the text data obtained from the interviews. It was established that successful KM implementation requires the promotion of an enabling environment. The results from the findings revealed that organizational culture, structure, leadership and strategy, ICT, as well as KM resources form, a foundation for the KM environment. KM processes, such as knowledge-retention, creation, capture, transfer and iv sharing, were found to be fundamental for KM practices to occur. Barriers to effective KM occurred largely due to the lack of awareness and time. To capitalize on knowledge, an organization must be prepared to balance its KM enablers and processes. The existing challenges impeding KM success should be identified and dealt with, in order to realize the KM benefits. The concept that knowledge and education can be treated as business products to be exported for high value return or productive asset becomes reality in the past decades due to the driving forces such as globalization, innovations in information and network technology. November 2004, Halo2, a video game designed exclusively for Microsoftâs Xbox, sold 2.4 million copies and earned up to $125 million US in its first 24 hours on store shelves, thus out-grossing the film Spider-Man 2 as highest grossing release in entertainment history. May 2002, Taiwan Government announced that they will nurture Taiwanese Digital Content industry into a profound force of economy. Among the major members in digital content industry, digital game industry is the one with the most potential. Game Development Talent in Taiwan is well known in pan-Asia region, with the ability to produce high quality games and leading role in Chinese entertainment business. The future for Taiwan game development talent is, without a doubt, bright. Knowledge workers have always been a popular subject of academic research. However, scholars in the past have treated the concept of knowledge worker as a single entity, rather than sets of different sub-group. The paper attempts to focus on the group of who participated in game development with a quantitative approach. The aim is to gain in-depth understanding about the lifestyle of game developers. Socialistsâ view of the world consisted of sets of âfieldsâ with rules to guide behavioral pattern of the people living in it. The behavioral pattern, as well as the tastes and opinions about most things in daily life, is referred as lifestyle. Game developers pay heavy attention on their professions, care less about dining as well as other aspects in daily life. The long working-hour is a major feature in game developersâ lifestyle, and they enjoy such a way of life. ▼ In this dissertation, using the tool of a political economy of communication analysis gives us an important way to conceptualize the challenges confronting Chinese media workers, especially editors, due to media reform and social transformation. I will accomplish this by examining three different but inter-related processes: commodification, structuration, and spatialization. First, I will analyze the ways in which the deepening of the media commodification process has forced Chinese media workers to serve the political interests of the state, and at the same time, to generate profit for their companies and promote political and social reforms. Second, I will explore the structuration process by analyzing how fundamental social, technological, political, and economic changes—especially those in class relations and power dynamics—have produced five critical problems for the Chinese media workers. Third, I will explore the media spatialization process by addressing its three indispensable components: globalization, neoliberalism, and the global division of labour. When China is increasingly integrated into the global political economy, most Chinese media workers have faced great changes in their value systems and their daily work processes. As a result, the privileged existence of workers as the “masters” of the Communist society has been transformed in many ways (Rocca 2003). In the last chapter, I will suggest plausible solutions to the problems of Chinese media workers, addressing the benefits of labour convergence, the basic functions and major limitations of worker organizations and trade unions, and how they can further help Chinese media workers better deal with the challenges associated with current media reform when labour unrest is on the rise. To conclude, this dissertation concentrates on the trajectories of the labour process transformation of Chinese media workers; their changing social, economic, and political roles; and their dilemma, challenges, and opportunities associated with current social reform and China’s more integration into the global political economy. Through the political economic analysis of Chinese media workers, I aim to better understand the broader social and economic transformations, particularly the network of power relations and institutional contexts in which Chinese media workers are situated, that have been taking place in China since the late 1970s.

▼ There have been several debates about the value of an MBA. Proponents of the MBA believe that the MBA contributes greatly to the development of general managers, while critics argue that the MBA course is disconnected from reality and does not equip graduates with the skills required to navigate managerial roles. Against this backdrop, the research aimed to establish which career capital components are accumulated through the MBA and what aspect of the MBA contribute to the accumulation of career capital.The research was conducted in two phases. The first phase of the research was qualitative and comprised ten semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders. The first phase aimed to establish the career capital components that are accumulated through the MBA and the aspects of the MBA that contribute to the accumulation of career capital. The constructs identified in phase one, together with those identified in the literature, were then used as inputs in the design of a self-administered questionnaire distributed in phase two. The questionnaire was sent to a total of 1 129 MBA graduates out of whom 205 completed the questionnaire.The career capital components that are developed through the MBA were identified, as well as the aspects of the MBA that contribute the most to accumulating career capital. The top career capital component identified was the ability to work under pressure. The aspect of the MBA that contributes the most to career capital accumulation was the case study method. Furthermore, the career capital components for which there were significant differences between males and females, as well as between those who completed their studies recently and those who completed them some time ago were also identified. The study found that there were no significant differences in perceived career capital between those who had different types of roles prior to embarking on the MBA. ▼ This scientific paper examines five newly qualified social workers (NQSW) in Sweden who are in an intermediate position after graduation between education and working life in social work. The study aimed to investigate how the graduates felt prepared after training to execute professional conversations and meetings in social work with clients. Qualitative interviews were conducted for this paper, where the results show that the NQSW felt partially prepared for this. Some challenges were seen in the result related to conversations and meetings, amongst these, were their role in the exercise of authority, that showed that they had met deeper dimensions of authority than what their education had prepared them for. Through theories related to different roles based on Erving Goffman (2011), analysis has been made to different roles that NQSW needs to take on, and its impact on them. Results show, among other things, that NQSW perceive it as a difficult balance between being personal and professional in meetings with clients. The result also highlights personal and professional development for self-awareness from the education as helpful, but there was a wish for more of this during the social work program. With theories of knowledge according to Gustavsson (2000; 2002), the results were also analyzed and presented about how NQSW obtained knowledge and how education made it possible to gather knowledge for conversations and meetings in the social work. It was found in the results, as in previous research, that theoretical knowledge from education that was linked to actual situations or practice, has been beneficial to NQSW in their professional practice. However, NQSW felt that the education could continue to be more related to practice and wished for more reality-based education. Based on this essay, one can also point out the importance of the transition between education and practical work. NQSW could be seen as they carried a certain vulnerability in the form of knowledge gaps, uncertainty of their role, and how practical social work is executed when the NQSW goes from education. They felt that introduction to the field was important given from the new workplaces. In this essay, they meant that they were given some opportunity and support in continuing developing their knowledge, related to meetings and conversations through further education and collegial support at their workplaces.

▼ Using the Social Exchange Theory (SET) as a theoretical framework, the present research aims to examine how the appointment of contingent workers affects an organisation's ability to effectively manage knowledge in New Zealand. Another objective is to explore how New Zealand organisations are managing knowledge and knowledge workers. The number of contingent knowledge workers is increasing, but organisations have been slow to adapt their cultures, structures or procedures to maximise the opportunity these workers represent. The relationship between the organisation and contingent knowledge workers is characterised primarily by economic compensation, which does not emphasise trust and commitment, the prerequisites for collaborative knowledge management behaviours. This is a qualitative study based on data collected through semi-structured interviews with senior and middle managers, human resource management practitioners, and permanent and contract employees located in six case organisations. A total of forty-eight employees were interviewed for this this study over a period of three years. The findings suggest that trust in the organisation has a significant influence on an organisation’s ability to manage knowledge. Trust moderates employee commitment and represents the basis for organisational culture, and as shown by the findings it is cultural elements that support the knowledge creation processes within the SECI model. The findings showed that information and communication technologies not only support Combination, but play an increasing role in Socialisation, Externalisation and Internalisation. In conclusion, the existence of trust encourages social exchange between individuals and facilitates the sharing and transfer of knowledge. Extending trust towards contingent workers influences their commitment and ensures their inclusion in the knowledge creation process. This study adds to the knowledge management body of knowledge by considering a distinct, yet increasingly important, segment of the workforce. Existing research focuses on generic knowledge management implementation, but does not consider how this affects different types of worker, such as contingent knowledge workers. There is a need to adapt human resource management practice in relation to the management of contingent workers, so that organisations provide rewards which promote professional commitment. This research also confirms the need to further develop dynamic capabilities for managing knowledge management, and proposes that this responsibility is delegated to those in middle and project management positions. The use of the SECI model (Takeuchi & Nonaka, 2004) to examine knowledge management practice is shown to be effective, and provides those charged with developing this competence with the means of identifying elements that require attention.

▼ With the increasing use of mobile technologies in modern organisations, managers are facing the dilemma of having to manage the performance of individuals who are removed from their direct sphere of control, while using performance management principles that have not necessarily been adapted to accommodate this. The study investigated, analysed and described the management and measurement of the performance of these virtual knowledge workers from the perspective of the manager, with the aim of proposing a new conceptual framework to assist managers in this task. In addition, the study identified the organisational context and individual contribution required to support such a framework. The study used a constructivist grounded theory framework, with the aim of building theory through an inductive approach rather than testing existing theory. An embedded, multiple-case study research design was used to execute the study, comprising five companies in the Information and Communications Technology and related sectors in South Africa. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected at the organisational, team and individual levels. In total, 39 interviews were qualitatively analysed using content analysis aided by ATLAS.ti. The 163 questionnaires were quantitatively analysed using descriptive statistical methods. Thereafter, within-case and cross-case analyses were performed to extract themes and to propose a conceptual framework for the enablement of the performance of virtual knowledge workers. The research uncovered four key findings. The first finding was that the concept of "virtual" in the term virtual worker is often misunderstood, and that the definition should be applied on a continuum of virtuality, leading to the concept of perceived and true virtuality. The second finding was that true virtuality influences how performance is perceived, and how deliverables and metrics contribute to perceived, actual and true performance. The third finding was that parameters affecting virtual performance include organisational, contextual, and customer factors, as well as the managerial approach itself. The manager needs to become the mediator for these parameters, thereby fulfilling the role of enabler of virtual performance. The fourth finding was that the visual or face-to-face element still remains important when managing the performance of virtual knowledge workers. The study makes a significant contribution on a theoretical level by extending existing theoretical models regarding virtual distance and the management of dispersed teams into a much more comprehensive model. This concentric performance enablement model for virtual knowledge workers shows how the manager acts as enabler for the true performance of the virtual knowledge workers. ▼ Much has been written about the effect of workplace communication on knowledge work (KW). Many scholars agree that KW is difficult to describe as it is less tangible than manual work and is often explained as tacit, unstructured, non-routine, variant and complex. KW has high cognitive activities and is greatly dependent on the effective communication between organizational members. It has become a challenge for companies to seek methods raising the performance of communication-based knowledge work activities (KWA). Thus, this study aims to investigate the contribution of spatial layout and work fragmentation to optimize the KWA in a knowledge-based organization by focusing on the amount of communications among KWs. Four main points were discussed to identify aspects that could improve the KWA in respect to communication-based activities (CBAs) ? 1) the current state of the perceived amount of communication (AOC) in the knowledge-based organization, 2) the KWs perception towards AOC in supporting knowledge work and better job performance, 3) the characteristics of spatial layout supporting AOC improvement and effectiveness (communicative environment), and 4) the causes, effect and control method of communication type interruptions towards KWs’ work fragmentation. The SECI Model of knowledge creation developed by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995) was adopted to investigate the knowledge work activities based on 12 SECI behavior codes. The activities were used to identify the characteristics contributed by a spatial layout and work fragmentation. Next, the study employed a mix method approach, and data were collected through a questionnaire survey on random sampling from various industries (KWs perception and perceived AOC, and work fragmentation). Behavioral study method was applied by adopting semi-structures interview and field observation to investigate the characteristics of a communicative-physical environment. Lab experiment was conducted to look at the work fragmentation scenario. The first findings on KWs perceptions towards AOC reported that high AOC occurred when executing knowledge creation activities. KWs also agree that exchanging high AOC in the workplace may motivate them to improve job attitude, helps develop healthier social-psychological aspects within a communication network, increased motivation and attain improved organizational culture. Second findings on spatial configuration for communicative environment for SECI communication (communication-based knowledge creation activities) considered aspects of ? 1) visibility factor ? based on integrated and segregated of space from the entire spatial layout system, degree of enclosure, co-presence and visibility of other KWs, 2) accessibility factor ? based on communication movement pattern and distance, 3) spatial proximity factor ? based on spatial adjacency and distance of individual workstation. ▼ In the era of knowledge economy, human capital is the important capital which enterprise can rely on and maintain the competitiveness, and also the source of power for continuous innovation. To stimulate the working intention of knowledge worker is one of the important tasks for an enterprise to elaborate their human capital. This paper investigates the Biotechnology industry in order to understand that how the presentation of human capital in this knowledge intensive industry affects the innovation performance through the knowledge worker management. By the empirical data and statistic analysis in this paper, the findings are as below: I.The aspects of human capital are: the executivesâ direction ability of vision supervisors, the entrepreneurship of employees, the investment and exploitation in human capital, and excellent hire. II.The aspects of knowledge worker management are: the leadership of knowledge, the working styles with challenge, the plan of employeesâ development, organic designs of work, reasonable evaluation of performance, and the promotion of knowledge exchange. III.The aspects of innovation performance are: innovation of product and innovation of manufacture. IV.The influences of human capital on innovation performance. 1.The executivesâ direction ability of vision supervisors and the investment and exploitation of human capital both have significant positive effects on the innovation of products. Among which the investment and exploitation of human capital effects more than the executivesâ direction ability of vision supervisors does. 2.The entrepreneurship of employees has a significant negative effect on the innovation of products; the excellent hire has no significant effect. 3.The executivesâ direction ability of vision supervisors and the investment and exploitation of human capital both have significant positive effects on the innovation of manufacture. ▼ Abstract This text, referred to the manpower survey data in 1991 & 2003 obtained from the Accounting & Statistics Department, is aimed at making a study of the trend on the switch of occupation before and after the rise of the Knowledge-based Economy Age. The employees, having experiences of switch, are chosen from the data of the Accounting & Statistic Department for ongoing intersecting analysis of before and after their switch. This research has found that the turnover of occupation/profession, within the time before development of the knowledge-based economy Age of 1991, has been prone to the mass-labor industries, such as traditional manufacture, construction and etc. Amid those labor mobility, industries which having failing net turnover rate of 2003, include the ones of âProfessional, Scientific and Technical servicesâ and âCultural, Sporting and Recreational Services.â It shows that Taiwan is appropriate to a new market with reconstructed labor and reacts clearly in that the supply of employees were not quick enough to catch reshuffled employment market. Possessing the first and second place among those industries are that âTechnicians and relatedâ and âMachine Operators & Fabricatorâ that are failing on the net turnover rate, are well in parallel with two industries of âConstructionâ & âReal Estate and Rental and Leasing â that are keeping minus on the net turnover rate. Furthermore, it shows that the traditional mass-labor industries have entailed labor to flow outward massively. The labor released from swift labor restructure is the major reason what causing the massive number of unemployment in the labor market. In the past twelve years, the structure of occupation of Taiwanâs employees is changed from mass-labor to mass-technique, and developed toward the service-industry steadily. The dominant phenomenon existing together in current labor market are that both unemployment and insufficiency of labor. ▼ O saber operário, no caso estudado nesta tese, nasce na família, no trabalho e nas escolas profissionalizantes, reproduz-se pelas relações familiares e disseminase através dos ambientes de trabalho dos membros da família. A reprodução no seio da família não é reprodução simples, mas reprodução ampliada e sofisticada, uma vez que, de um lado, o mundo da produção tem evoluído de um mercado primordialmente de bens tangíveis para um mercado que privilegia bens intangíveis; de outro lado, os sujeitos das novas gerações não se vinculam necessariamente ao ambiente do trabalho físico ou fabril, mas diversificam suas inserções, inclusive no mundo docente e acadêmico. O caso estudado é a Família Dornelles, tomando como membro fundador Armando Dornelles e focando o pensamento e a ação de sua filha Leni Vieira Dornelles e de sua neta Amanda Eccel Dornelles, ambas pedagogas com estudos pós-graduados. As entrevistas realizadas com esses três membros da Família Dornelles permitem concluir que é possível afirmar a existência de uma pedagogia intergeracional na família, estruturada sobre cinco pilares: responsabilidade, respeito, honestidade, amorosidade e solidariedade. Adicionalmente, é possível concluir que o pensamento gerado na família operária amplia-se e dissemina-se através da ação dos seus membros nos respectivos ambientes de trabalho. Privilegia-se, para a investigação, dois membros docentes, e o que se constata é que uma das possíveis conexões pedagógicas do pensamento operário se dá pela ação docente, de pesquisa e de extensão. Os valores adquiridos na família acompanham os sujeitos em sua vida adulta e são operacionalizados e disseminados através da prática acadêmica no âmbito da Universidade e nos eventos profissionais e científicos internos ou externos à instituição onde se dá o vínculo profissional. As entrevistas permitem, também, detectar que, entre as três dimensões – operário, gaúcho, negro – o ser negro, na Família Dornelles, tem menor peso específico do que ser gaúcho ou ser operário (trabalhador). Ser gente vem primeiro, depois vem o ser operário (trabalhador), ser gaúcho, ser negro. Cada uma destas dimensões da cultura e da personalidade dos sujeitos pesquisados participa do seu condicionamento social, todavia o que os impulsiona é o sentir-se em condição de disputa com outros que nasceram privilegiados pela cor ou situação econômico-social. A condição genérica do humano é que dá consistência à formulação e vivência dos valores, subsidiada pela situação de classe, etnia e pertencimento territorial. Estudos como este, têm uma forte referência na contribuição de Boaventura Sousa Santos e Carlo Ginzburg, que, respectivamente, nos seus estudos “Conhecimento prudente para uma vida decente: Um discurso sobre as ciências revisitado” e “El queso y los gusanos”, conectam um foco a um período histórico.
