2. van der Hoeven R. Design and validation of project execution KPIs with EXTREME .

Degree: 2018, Open Universiteit Nederland

In the field of performance management, KPI design and property validation has been extensively researched. Many theories and models have been proposed, claiming that these would lead to useful KPIs for organizations to effectively measure their performance. However, when validating the properties (Quantifiability, Sensitivity, Linearity, Reliability, Improvement-orientation) of the designed KPIs, none of these methods succeed. In the EXTREME method however, modelling of both the goal and process execution levels is introduced, claiming that this combination leads to the design of reliable and improvement oriented KPIs. In this research, the usefulness of the EXTREME method is evidenced, by applying it to design and validate (K)PIs for a standard project execution process and a time related goal, based on the widespread PRINCE2® standard. The designed artefacts (a goal model and an executable protocol model) are evaluated based on the 7 guidelines of design science research. Although the designed artefact qualified for 6 of these guidelines, further research is proposed to also qualify for the remaining guideline.

Subjects/Keywords: Performance management; KPI design; property validation; EXTREME method; project execution proces; PRINCE2®; time-based goals; design-science research guidelines
