▼ This research falls into two streams. The first investigated perspective-related differences in ostracism (i.e., the act of being excluded or ignored) by comparing the experience of targets (i.e., those who are ostracised), sources (i.e., those who ostracise), and observers (i.e., those who witness ostracism). Studies 1 (N = 202) and 2 (N = 295) utilised questionnaire and autobiographical recall paradigms to investigate the impact of ostracism on primary needs, affect, and behaviour. Studies 1 and 2 also examined perspective-related differences in (perceived) motives for ostracism. The second stream focused on ostracism sources to discern mixed findings regarding source responses, and to further investigate ostracism motive. Study 3 reviewed current source literature, and meta-analyses compared source experiences to targets and included individuals finding that sources reported greater control and guilt. Factors such as ostracising alone or with others, or ostracism being self-motivated or induced, moderated effects. Studies 4, 5, and 6 extended this inquiry by examining how source experiences differ as a function of ostracism motive. Study 4 (N = 136) supported the efficacy of a paradigm created to induce the experience of ostracising for punitive versus defensive motives. Employing this paradigm, Study 5 (N = 372) investigated the impact of motive on sources’ experienced emotion, and Study 6 (N = 743) considered behavioural intentions. This project was the first to examine perspective-related differences in being a target, source, and observer of ostracism, and to consider the impact of ostracising for specific motives on sources. Findings highlight how consequences differ as a function of motives for ostracism, add to growing literature on ostracism sources, and support predictions regarding the mediating role of affect in prompting behaviour.

▼ Past research reliably shows that spending money on
others (termed prosocial spending) makes people happier than
spending money on oneself (Dunn, Aknin, & Norton, 2008). The
present research tested whether the happiness benefits of prosocial
spending may be reduced when spending money on others for
self-centered reasons – to benefit the self – than when done for
recipient-centered reasons – to benefit the recipient. Across seven
studies, self-centered prosocial spending was shown to make people
less happy than recipient-centered spending. Specific forms of
self-centered and recipient-centered motives – including
self-enhancement, obligation, other-support, and
other-enhancement – affected happiness in different ways, and a
scale was developed and validated to measure these effects.
Qualities of the relationships between givers and recipients
influenced determining on whom to spend as well as predicting
affective outcomes. The definition of happiness also mattered. When
happiness was defined as trait-level well-being, the effects of
self-centered motives were less consistent but seemed to operate
through reduced positive affect and not through increased negative
affect. When happiness was defined as specific to the spending
episode itself or as eudaemonic fulfillment, the effects of
recipient-centered motives were more robust. Finally, there was
little evidence for two proposed mechanisms for the
effect – perceived gratitude and self-focused attention – although
gratitude was a reliable predictor of happiness, independently of
people's motives for spending. The results are discussed in terms
of theoretically situating prosocial spending as an interpersonal
process.

▼ This dissertation compiles three papers that focus on the social context of chronic pain. Chapter 1 presents a conceptual framework of hypothesized risk factors for adult children of parents with chronic pain. The proposed framework is based on prior literature and theoretical models that highlight the
interpersonal effects of chronic illness and pain on family
relationships. The following two chapters explore older adults' social networks beyond the family context, and focus explicitly on decision making about pain treatment. The study presented in Chapter 2 employed in-depth interviews to investigate the social and decisional preferences of ethnically diverse (Hispanic and non-Hispanic White) individuals with chronic pain conditions. Qualitative content analysis was used to identify key themes in participants' responses. Results revealed that, when making treatment decisions, older adults prefer to involve emotionally reassuring social partners and peers with similar pain conditions or treatment experiences. Overall, participants' perceptions of their treatment decision making processes were more positive when the support they received matched the support they desired. The study presented in Chapter 3 employed survey methods to investigate the types (informational, emotional, instrumental) and sources (e.g. physician, relative) of decision support that individuals desire and receive when considering total joint replacement (TJR). Guided by theoretical frameworks from psychology and social gerontology, I examined the social structural (relationship to the patient) and experiential characteristics (having had TJR) that influence decision support preferences among TJR candidates. In parallel, I hypothesized that there would be an age-graded preference for emotional rather than informational support. Finally, I investigated whether higher congruence in desired and received support is linked with respondents' decisional conflict and certainty. Multilevel models showed that healthcare providers, family members, and individuals who had undergone prior TJR were key sources of decision support. There were no age differences regarding the types of support individuals desired and received. Overall, greater congruence in emotional support desired and received was associated with reduced decisional conflict, whereas greater congruence in practical support desired and received was associated with greater willingness to undergo surgery. The final chapter draws connections between the three papers and proposes directions for future research.

▼ Research indicates that determinants such as commitment, communication and attachment facilitate long-term marriages. The present study seeks to understand these and other possible determinants that facilitate enduring
relationships. Furthermore, the research focuses exclusively on the determinants that males believe facilitate long-term
relationships. Bader and Pearson's transposition of Mahler's Model of Separation Individuation onto adult
relationships was used as a theoretical point of departure. Bader and Pearson posit that couples evolve through stages which resemble Mahler's Model of Childhood Development. A qualitative approach using semistructured interviews aided in creating a non-threatening environment whilst collecting data. Purposive non-random sampling was used to identify participants and thereafter participants were obtained via snowball sampling. Tesch's thematic analysis was used to analyse results. The research findings highlight the understanding of what determinants males deem essential to facilitate long-term
relationships

▼ "A Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science-Psychology Cognitive and Affective Science."
The concept of sensory channels of interaction (e.g., touch, hearing, sight, etc.) has been previously studied in the context of romantic relationships. Recent work (Miron, Jiang, Weisensel, Patterson, & Rizo, 2018) has focused on how romantic partners’ differential preferences for sensory channels of relating predict different relationship outcomes. However, this work has focused on sensory preferences rather than on actual use of sensory modalities in romantic relationships. The current study examined the interactive effects of intimates’ sensory modality importance and their actual use of sensory modalities on relationship satisfaction and attraction (passionate love and liking). Couples responded to a survey measuring their personal use and preference for various sensory modalities of relating to their current romantic partner, relationship satisfaction, and attraction to partner, and relationship demographic information. Both partners in the romantic dyad individually responded to the questionnaires. Multivariate regression analyses revealed that partners’ compatibility with regard to hearing and substitute channel and to some lesser extent compatibility in sight predicted satisfaction, liking, and passionate love, whereas compatibility in touch and bodily sensations did not significantly predict relationship outcomes for neither males nor females. Paired samples t-tests also revealed that male and female partners differ in their ratings of importance and use of sensory modalities, specifically with regards to hearing, bodily sensations, sight, and substitute channels. The current study has implications extending into relationship development and marriage/family therapy with results suggesting that use and importance of sensory modalities are both tied to relationship outcomes, such as satisfaction, liking and passionate love for both males and females.

▼ In the forgiveness literature, trust and commitment have each emerged as important predictors of outcomes following transgressions. However, their effects are usually estimated separately. Given that these variables tend to be highly correlated, and more importantly given the strong theoretical links between trust and commitment, one contribution that can still be made to the forgiveness literature is disentangling their effects. There has also been less investigation concerning the way in which these predictors affect short-term distress—using variables such as rumination and negative emotion as outcomes in their own right. In particular, detrimental associations of commitment with these variables were hypothesised. Here, I investigate the effects of trust and commitment simultaneously, on both forgiveness and forgiveness-related negative emotions, in the wake of an
interpersonal transgression. The research had two primary goals. Firstly, to concurrently examine the effects of trust and commitment on emotional reactions to an
interpersonal transgression, examining the effects each had while statistically controlling for the other. A second goal was the investigation of mediating variables, to support or refute several proposed explanations for the effects which emerged. Study 1 used a hypothetical design, where participants imagined a transgression being committed by their actual partner. Study 2 employed a recall approach, investigating the effects of trust and commitment using actual transgressions. Study 2 also broadened the context to include non-romantic
relationships. Study 3 used a prospective design where trust and commitment were measured before the hurtful event occurred, to reduce the possibility of bi-directional associations. Across these three studies I found that, when controlling for commitment, higher trust was associated with less distress. However, when controlling for trust, higher commitment was associated with increased distress. Notably, these opposing effects did not occur when forgiveness was used as the outcome variable. The unique effects of trust on forgiveness were consistently beneficial. However, the unique effects of commitment on forgiveness were less consistent, including a mix of non-significant and beneficial associations. Several related explanations for these effects were proposed and tested. The beneficial effects of trust were found to be mediated by exploitation risk and responsibility/blame attributions. For the detrimental effects of commitment on distress, evidence refuted the suggestion that the observed effects were mediated by an increase in the value of the relationship. However, evidence provided partial support for the idea that, after controlling for trust, more committed individuals tended to be in
relationships characterised by non-mutual dependence, and that this was able to explain the detrimental effects observed. The primary limitations of the research are the need for further experimental investigation, and slight power concerns due to a high drop-out rate in…

▼ Previous communication scholarship has thoroughly examined the use of relational maintenance behaviors as outlined by Canary and Stafford (2003) on various types of
relationships. These relational maintenance behaviors include openness, positivity, assurances, shared tasks, and networks (Canary & Stafford, 2003). However, little scholarship applying relational maintenance to contexts involving a life-altering illness exists, especially from the care partner's perspective. With the rising threat of Alzheimer's Disease and related diseases (ADRD), it is necessary to better understand how these behaviors might play into interactions between loved ones. Specifically, this research explores the use of relational maintenance behaviors between partners where one person has ADRD and the other is their primary care partner as they are involved in a participatory arts engagement workshop. Data collection involved video observation during the workshop sessions and follow-up phone calls with care partners about their experience after each session. Using thematic analysis, this study implicates that participants use relational maintenance regardless of their mental capacity and that the use of these behaviors creates tensions primarily for care partners to balance. The findings of this research encourage further exploration of the use of relational maintenance by people with a life-altering illness and their loved ones in order to understand the complicated communicative process associated with the immeasurable effects of a life-altering illness.

▼ The study of superintendent-school board
relationships is a worthwhile endeavor from a practitioner's point of view and is important for the success of a school district. The conceptual framework consisted of features and ideas related to organizational leadership theory and the political view taken from the literature reviewed. The alliance building-negotiation tactics, power/influence within an organization, and superintendent turnover associated with the dissatisfaction theory were featured concepts in the chapters leading up to the research methods. Four focus group interviews with three to six board members from four school districts were conducted, as well as individual interviews with six current superintendents. The superintendents are current and former employees of the four represented districts. From the interview data, connections were made with most of the key conceptual features, and four themes were formulated:
interpersonal relations, cultural awareness, communication skills, and management accountability. Management accountability generalizes from the areas of fiscal, personnel, and legal. There were some interesting points to consider in this study, but the development of
interpersonal attributes are vital. Being aware and becoming part of the local community, as well as improving communication skills and knowledge of expectations and compliance issues related to management, is essential. Communication skills include listening and gathering of information. These are all considerations for graduate school programs preparing future school leaders. More studies are needed to further explore the superintendent-school board
relationships in a variety of different ways to gather data that is of quality and quantity. This will continue to add to the existing literature and reinforce ideas associated with improved relations and long tenure as a school superintendent.

▼ Aims: Friendship plays an important and central role in adolescent life. This thesis was conducted in two parts to address two broad aims relating to friendship in adolescence. The first aim was to establish what is currently known about the impact of perfectionism on adolescent interpersonal relationships. Specifically, it was of interest to determine whether perfectionism exerts a negative influence on adolescent friendships. The second aim was to explore the friendship experiences of adolescents diagnosed with an eating disorder (ED) in order to address a significant gap in the current literature. Method: A systematic review of the literature relating to perfectionism and interpersonal functioning in adolescence was carried out with a view to addressing the first aim. With regards to the second aim a grounded theory study was conducted with adolescents currently in treatment for an eating disorder. The young people were asked about their experiences of friendship and emerging concepts were followed up in a concurrent process of data collection and analysis. Results: The systematic review highlighted an absence of research on interpersonal functioning and perfectionism in adolescence, with only seven studies identified that met inclusion criteria. The results were further complicated by inconsistencies in the conceptualisation of perfectionism in the identified studies. The empirical study uncovered the efforts that adolescents go to to achieve acceptance in their friendships. It also revealed that the development of an ED is experienced as creating distance in adolescent friendships. This affects both the actual amount of time that young people spend with their friends as well as the emotional connection that they are able to feel in their friendships. Conclusions: There is a need to reconsider the conceptualisation of perfectionism in future research with a consistent acknowledgement of the interpersonal dimensions of the concept. It is important to acknowledge the significant impact that ED development can have on adolescent relationships. Young people may require support to address these difficulties and preserve their friendships to avoid long term negative consequences.

This thesis documents the results of a research project investigating the relationship between interpersonal relationship factors and shared memory. Although shared memory and the factors that influence it have been researched more in recent years, there has been limited research which has measured the specific influence of interpersonal factors such as familiarity, trust, confidence, and memory esteem on memory distortion, specifically memory conformity and false memory. The research presented in this thesis sought to fill the void in the shared memory literature and also proposed new use of image recording technology for assessing the impact of dyadic memory conformity on memory recognition.
There are four empirical chapters (2-5) in this thesis. Within these four chapters are four separate and related studies, which examine the influence of familiarity, trust, confidence, and memory esteem on memory distortion for ordinary events and for flashbulb memory of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, along with the use of image recording technology (SenseCam TM) as an objective measure of memory distortion between dyadic members. In Chapter 2, it was hypothesised that familiarity and trust would interact with reminiscence type (discussion vs. revision) between dyadic members and would result in an increase in memory conformity (both corrective and distortive) and false memory. The findings were consistent with the hypothesis. Chapter 3 followed on from investigating interpersonal constructs on ordinary events, by using flashbulb memory of 9/11 as the stimulus and focusing on interpersonal familiarity, trust, confidence and memory esteem. It was expected that due to people being protective of their memories for meaningful and emotional flashbulb events, there would be low levels of memory conformity. However, with the social power of discussion, as evident in Chapter 2, people would possibly alter their memories in favour of another person whom they know. We proposed a new concept and termed it memory esteem and predicted that this would negatively relate to memory conformity. The findings were consistent with the expectation. Chapter 4 involved investigating the impact of using visual record keeping for dyadic members undertaking everyday tasks and its subsequent impact on memory distortion. It was found that image diary technology and its interaction with interpersonal trust and memory esteem resulted in lowering memory conformity. Having investigated shared memory and the outcomes for memory conformity and false memory in the previous chapters, in Chapter 5 we examined individual recognition memory and found that memory esteem negatively predicted corrective and distortive memory conformity, leading to positive and negative outcomes for recognition memory.
In sum, the research presented in this thesis suggests that interpersonal relationship factors have important influences on shared memory and subsequent memory distortion. Further, that the visual record keeping could be further used as a…

▼ This project focused on understanding how past romantic relationships influence subsequent romantic relationships. Participants (n = 147) completed a survey containing repeated measures focusing on a previous romantic relationship and a current romantic relationship. Through the application of Relational Turbulence Model (RTM; Solomon & Knobloch, 2004) as a framework, the evaluation of relational uncertainty and interference in previous romantic relationships and subsequent romantic relationships was determined. The usage of RTM highlights how past experiences of relational uncertainty and interference influence the following romantic relationship and partner. Additionally, an evaluation of how relational uncertainty influences different types of talk in both previous and subsequent relationships was considered. Finally, the Investment Model (Rusbult, 1990) was utilized to evaluate overall commitment experienced by a relational partner in a previous and subsequent relationship, as well as how commitment influences was influenced by relational uncertainty, interference, and different types of talk in previous and subsequent romantic relationships.
Results indicated the experience of past relational uncertainty and interference in a previous romantic relationship increase the experience of current relational uncertainty and interference in a subsequent relationship. The most common types of talk that occur between past relational partners were small talk, joking around, catching up, recapping the day, and conflict, which resembles “everyday relating” (Goldsmith & Baxter, 1996). Additionally, talk about an ex-partner with a new, current partner was found to increase relational uncertainty. This study also found that increased talk about an ex-partner in subsequent romantic relationships is positively associated with appraisals of threat and avoidance of relationship talk, as mediated by current relational uncertainty. Finally, other important findings produced by this study were that relational uncertainty and inference were negatively associated with overall commitment in the current romantic relationship.
Overall, this study exposed how past romantic relationships do not simply dissolve and disappear, but continue to live within relational partners and ultimately impact the following romantic relationships. The components of RTM, different types of talk, and commitment are major contributors to romantic relationships, therefore the application of these frameworks allowed for a closer analysis of the question “if we’re over, are we really “over”?”

▼ A partial or non-recognition of the effect of
interpersonal relationships may hinder the success
of retail business diffusion and growth, especially among the South African retailers taking
advantage of the retail revolution in Africa.
Interpersonal relationships in the workplace
between supervisors and subordinates could be considered an imperative factor that may affect
organisational wellbeing, psychological working conditions, individual differences and culture
of both the individual and the entire organisation.
Interpersonal relationships are perceived as
behavioural traits that employees demonstrate at work in the process of interaction. In day-today
business life, almost all activities occur in the settings of
relationships which are the centre
of organisations. Scholars rightly observe that the attention of researchers should not be
focused only on tasks, functions or hierarchies, but also on how workplaces organise their
relationships.
This thesis examines the influence of negative and positive individual
interpersonal
relationships using
interpersonal conflicts and social support as predictors of employee basic
performance at work. A mixed method approach was adopted and questionnaire was
administered to supervisors and subordinates of selected retail companies that participated in
the study. Quantitative data was collected as follows: The
Interpersonal Conflict at Work Scale
(ICAWS) designed by Frone (2000) was used to measure
interpersonal conflict; while the Social
Support Scale (SSS) designed by Sarason, Basham, Levine and Sarason, (1983) was used to
measure social support. The Employee Basic Work Performance Scale (EBWPS) designed by
Uhl-Bien and Graen (1995) was used to measure employee work performance, while the
Leader-member Exchange Scale (LMX) designed by Tsui, Pearce Porter and Tripoli (1997)
was used to measure the
interpersonal relationship between supervisors and subordinates. Four
open-ended questions were designed to elicit qualitative data.
From the four retail companies in South Africa, a total sample of 400 employees was selected
but 310 (inclusive of 163 supervisors and 147 subordinates) responded to the survey.
Quantitative data was analysed by the use of SPSS (version 22) to test for bivariate connections
among the variables as well as the validity and reliability of the measurements. Content analysis
was adopted in analysing collected qualitative data.
No significant connection between social support and employee performance was observed
from the result of the quantitative data for subordinates. Similarly, the
interpersonal conflict
and
interpersonal relationships showed no significant connection among the data from subordinates. Moreover, the outcome of the quantitative data collected from the supervisors
revealed that there was no significant relationship between social support,
interpersonal
conflict and employee performance in the South African retail sector. On the other hand, the
result of the analysis of
interpersonal relationships and employee…

To Succeed as a Site Manager in the Construction Industry Eva Karlsmyr The construction industry has a long history of lower productivity than other industries, and leadership is generally seen as one important path to improve efficiency. However, the knowledge of leadership in this context is modest at best. This study’s aim is to contribute to the field of research through a thematic analysis with a quality focused approach towards leadership challenges from a site manager’s perspective. For the purpose of identifying commonalities in management success, seven site managers of a nationwide Swedish construction company have given their views on the factors that improve their leadership efficacy. The result of the study focuses on six aspects concerning leadership behavior and three aspects concerning input from others. The nine aspects of leadership that are the focus of this paper have in common the themes of interest in a people-focused approach, interpersonal communication and interpersonal relationships. These themes for successful leadership imply a clear relationship with the company’s overall leadership policy and newer theories of transformational leadership. The study contributes to the body of research on transformational leadership in the construction industry and improves the…

▼ The purpose of this study is to investigate the implications of relationship rule consensus over the meanings of honesty and deception in romantic relationships. Relationship rules are implicit understandings developed over time that guide individuals’ behavior in relationships, but they are often ambiguous and unspoken. Honesty and deception rules are particularly vulnerable to different interpretations given that honesty is held to such high esteem, yet deception is common in relationships. Since deception becomes a salient source of conflict when discovered, coordination of these rules should be linked to relational quality.
In part one of the study, in-depth interviews helped identify what rules individuals supported in their relationships, which were incorporated into a survey taken by couples in part two. The survey assessed direct and meta-perspectives on the rules, as well as conflict and satisfaction. The results supported many of the findings from previous interpersonal perception studies: couples perceived agreement more than they agreed on the rules, and they agreed to a greater extent than they understood one another’s perspectives. Additionally, perceived agreement, agreement, and understanding were all linked to relational quality (i.e., higher satisfaction and lower conflict). A unique finding was that when rules were categorized as either rigid (absolute) or flexible (contingent), the rigid rules were both endorsed more in relationships and linked to conflict to a greater extent than the flexible rules.

▼ The number of women matriculating to college and successfully earning their degree continues to rise; all the while, college campuses continue to see a steady incline in the enrollment of first-generation students. Despite the fact that these two populations continue to grow, both still face many barriers while attempting to succeed in college. Although there is an abundance of literature on these two populations separately, there has been little focus on the perceptions and experiences of traditional-age, first-generation college women. There is a limited understanding of how these students perceive the ability of college environments to meet their social and emotional needs. In order to resolve this oversight, the purpose of my dissertation study was to explore how self-identified traditional-age, first-generation college women perceive
interpersonal relationships to have influenced their academic successes. I utilized interviews in order to collect the viewpoints of the participants at a public institution in the southwestern United States in order to illuminate the participants’ perceptions of the influence of
interpersonal relationships on their academic choices and success. This study highlights the importance of understanding the perceptions of first-generation college women about the role of
relationships in their studies. The research focuses on their perspectives by hearing their own words, which is made possible by utilizing a phenomenological standpoint. The findings revealed the diverse, and at times, similar perceptions the participants held about the influence of
interpersonal relationships on their academic decisions and successes. The women spoke at length about the impact their family, peers, and academic agents had on both their academic and personal lives as they transitioned to and attended college. They also described their experiences as they transitioned to college and the social and emotional challenges associated with this change. The cross-case analysis revealed four categories the participants perceived to be most prominent in influencing their academic journeys: importance of funded programs, familial support, connections on campus, and maintaining academic priorities. Although there are many implications of this study, the most prominent is the ability to inform institutions of higher education on the ways they can provide supportive resources that meet the social and emotional needs of this population.

▼ The advancement of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has led to the re-conceptualization of
relationships. Currently, multiple frameworks exist that detail the different behaviors individuals enact to maintain
relationships. However, the only electronic media these relational maintenance typologies include is the telephone. This is a limitation of the literature: first, numerous ICTs exist and are being used for maintenance, and second computer-mediated communication (CMC) is being categorized only as a behavior and not also as a context. Previous research has demonstrated that computer-mediated interactions differ from in-person interactions. Therefore, a framework that incorporates CMC as a medium through which the maintenance of
relationships occurs is merited. Analyzing data from 16 semi-structured interviews and 421 surveys, this study sought to overcome the limitations in the literature by examining
interpersonal relational maintenance through the use of CMC. The overall research goals were (a) to explore how and why CMC is used to support the maintenance of non-platonic
relationships that have been initiated in physical environments, (b) to examine the perceived influence of relational maintenance via CMC on relational attributes (i.e., commitment, control, liking, love, quality, satisfaction, stability, and trust), and (c) to explore whether the pre-existing relational maintenance model and typology could be applied to a CMC context, while classifying CMC as a medium. This study was composed of three phases: (a) interview data collection, (b) survey pilot, and (c) survey data collection. Participants in Phase 1 consisted of 16 adults who could report on their use of CMC in a current or past non-platonic relationship. A portion of these same adults participated in Phase 2 (N = 12) of the study. Phase 3 participants (N = 421) were adults who used CMC to maintain their pre-established, monogamous, heterosexual, non-platonic relationship that was initiated in a physical environment.
Using textual analysis, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and multivariate analysis of variance, seven research questions were addressed. Findings indicated that the structure of the RMS did not hold when examined in the context of CMC. The frequency with which relational maintenance behaviors (RMBs) were utilized indicated that positivity was used the most and social networks were used the least. Additionally, the overarching reason CMC was used for relational maintenance was because of a desire/need to interact with one’s partner (i.e., accessibility and connectedness). Overall, participants believed that using CMC for relational maintenance had a positive impact on their relational attributes. Finally, significant differences were found between RMBs enacted in CMC, the reasons individuals used CMC for relational maintenance, and the perception individuals had of the impact that RMBs enacted in CMC had on the relationship: These differences varied based on relational stage (seriously dating or married) and…

▼ Cognitive interdependence is understood to benefit interpersonal relationships, as high cognitive interdependence is associated with healthier conflict styles, more positive problem solving, and greater relationship stability. The following study compared the degrees of cognitive interdependence between cohabitating and dating relationships to reveal the benefits and shared experiences of these romantic unions. Three predictors of cognitive interdependence—plural pronoun usage, interconnectedness, and centrality of the relationship—were measured using Agnew et al.’s (1998) method. The sample consisted of 159 undergraduate students who are either living with their significant other or are in a dating relationship. Results revealed that cohabitators and daters have similar degrees of cognitive interdependence. In addition, people who plan to marry their partner, whether they are cohabitating or dating, experience higher levels of cognitive interdependence than people who do not have plans to marry their partner. The findings will inform cohabitators and daters about the qualities and experiences within these relationships and provide them with useful information when making relationship choices.

▼ Influencing multiple stakeholders is essential for individuals operating in supply networks. Recent research tends to confuse influence tactics (i.e. short-term influence appeals) with strategic influence (i.e. long-term resource investments intended to build trust, social networks and mutual understanding). The current literature does not explain how these two notions of influence interact or how they are related. Using an ethnographic case study drawing on interviews, meeting observations, and focus group data, this thesis addresses the question How does the use of strategic
interpersonal influence affect tactical
interpersonal influence within the Australian Defence Supply Network (ADSN)? This thesis makes three contributions. Firstly, the study proposes a strategic, resource-allocation perspective to study
interpersonal influence. It defines strategic
interpersonal influence as a set of deliberate resource investments, made by influencers, with a long-term objective of enhancing their ability to exert
interpersonal influence effectively. This thesis proposes that strategic
interpersonal influence comprises five types of resource investments: relational, empathic, developmental, adaptational and informational. Secondly, the study proposes that strategic
interpersonal influence contributes to social capital in terms of trust, social networks, mutual obligations and shared meanings, and leads to the development of five influencer identities: partner, predator, problem-solver, specialist, and networker. Together, social capital and influencer identities affect an influencers ability to exert tactical
interpersonal influence. Thirdly, the study proposes that tactical
interpersonal influence consists not only of rational and emotional appeals embedded in specific messages but also of the influence channels which are the messengers who carry those messages. The findings explain the relationship between strategic
interpersonal influence and tactical
interpersonal influence and highlight the strategic importance of investing resources to build the social capital and develop the identities that can enhance the effectiveness of influence tactics. They also highlight the importance of selecting influence channels, as well as influence appeals, when planning influence tactics. Thereby, the study provides guidance to managers on taking a longer-term strategic perspective on exercising influence in supply networks, especially in relation to sales strategy decisions and project management decisions.

▼ Recent shifts in the perceptions of and expectations
for dating, cohabitation, and marriage call for an evaluation of
the characteristics associated with how these
relationships
function. The current research offers insight regarding the common
cognitive structures that members of a social group use in defining
these romantic relationship stages. Through the delineation and
testing of a cultural model, this research expands the literature
regarding knowledge structures of romantic
relationships and
explores the influence of
interpersonal and mediated
representations.Study 1 identifies the characteristics that
individuals associate with typical dating
relationships, cohabiting
relationships, and marriages from the perspective of
interpersonal
and mediated representations. Characteristics were collected via a
cognitive thought-listing task and then examined by a similar
population in a member checking rating task. A qualitative analysis
of the characteristics put forth by participants (n = 125) in the
cognitive thought-listing task revealed common categories of
characteristics for each stage. Additionally, a quantitative
analysis revealed that participants listed more characteristics for
each stage within the
interpersonal condition when compared to the
mediated condition; cohabitation was found to have the fewest
characteristics listed by participants in both conditions. Once the
categories of characteristics were established, participants (n =
24) in the member checking portion of this study rated each
characteristic in terms of the typicality to the relationship
stage. The results of a hierarchical cluster analysis revealed a
two-cluster structure for each stage that identified
characteristics rated as highly typical. The characteristics in the
cluster with higher typicality ratings were retained to test for
cultural model formation, consensus, and consonance. Study 2
identifies and evaluates the structure of
interpersonal and
mediated cultural models of dating, cohabitation, and marriage as
well as examines the impact of media use on agreement with the
model characteristics. In the first part of the study, participants
(n = 26) were asked to complete a card sorting task to determine
the similarity of model characteristics. Multidimensional scaling
was used to determine the model structure for each relationship
stage within the two conditions; a three-dimensional model
structure was found for all six models. A hierarchical cluster
analysis was conducted to aid in examining how the characteristics
were organized within this multidimensional space. Once the model
structure was identified, participants (n = 398) were asked to
complete an attribute rating task to identify cultural consensus on
the model dimensions. Participants assessed the characteristics of
each model on five attributes: good, important, satisfying,
realistic, and desirable. Results showed significant fit for all
attributes, except for the realistic attribute within mediated
dating; however, attribute ratings were highly correlated and only

This study contributes to the
current understanding of
post-abortion issues, by exploring women’s subjective experiences
of post-abortion distress and the impact on
interpersonal
relationships. The relational impact
is further situated in the
context of its importance to psychological well-being.
Four women,
between the ages of 23 and 45, described their lived experiences
of
post-abortion distress during semi-structured interviews. Each
participant gave detailed
accounts of the abortion event, the
difficulties experienced afterwards and the perceived
impact that
this kind of distress had on their lives and specifically, their
relationships with
others. The data was subsequently analysed
using interpretative phenomenological analysis
(IPA).
Twelve main
themes emerged from the transcripts, each of which is discussed
separately as well as in relation to other pertinent literature.
The critical examination of the
findings presented in this study
revealed divergent aspects to those found in some of the
existing
literature, as well as understandings comparable with previous
research.
The meanings that emerged from these women’s stories
revealed intense cognitive,
emotional and behavioural dilemmas,
all of which highlight the subjective experience of
post-abortion
distress as a complicated and deeply personal issue, with profound
effects on
their relational worlds.

The present study aimed mainly at understanding and explaining the musical development of babies considering their interpersonal relationships in the context of the project ‘Music for Babies’. The data were collected during meetings of a group of babies (up to 2 years old) and their companions in the Music Department extension project of UFRGS Institute of Arts between March 2004 and November 2005. The meetings were taped on VHS and were organized in a descriptive protocol, during the analysis, entitled ‘Description of Video Data’ (DDV). The theoretical reference used here was based on education, on musical education, on Psychology and on Medicine including authors such as Piaget (1987), Beyer (1994), Barceló (2003), Stern (1992), Klaus and Klaus (1989), Klaus and Kennel (1992). The research was developed following a qualitative approach and a longitudinal observation method. The analysis of the data confirmed the hypothesis that the musical development is connected to the baby’s interpersonal relationships and it pointed out the importance of the process in his/her musical development, which is, the promotion of musical experiences for babies. According to the data, the project ‘Music for Babies’ showed to be a space in which both babies and adults can develop their interpersonal relationships and their musical experiences.

▼ In recent years, computer-media dated communication has not only become extremely popular but has also begun to hold an important function in daily social interactions. This qualitative study investigates the communication phenomena of deception as it occurs in the online dating environment. The research study focused on four questions: (1) About what characteristics are online daters deceptive? (2) What motivation do online daters have for their deception of others in the online dating environment? (3) What perceptions do online daters have about other daters' deceit towards them in the online dating environment? (4) How does deception affect the romantic relationships formed in the online dating environment? Through an online surveying tool data was collected with 15 open ended questions. A total of 52 participants were included in the study ranging in ages from 21-37. The results of the study found that the majority of online daters consider themselves and others to be mostly honest in their online self presentations. Those online daters that did use deception were motivated to do so by the longing to attract members of the opposite sex and project a positive self-image. Daters were also willing to overlook deception in others if they viewed the dishonesty as a slight exaggeration or characteristic of little value to the dater. Despite the deception that does occur, participants still believe that the online dating environment is capable of developing successful romantic relationships.

A Multilevel Analysis of the Influences of Employee Expertise and Quality of Interpersonal Relationships on Organizational Knowledge Creation: The Moderating Role of Transformational Leadership.

▼ In the era of information and technology, organizations’ competitive advantage and sustainability increasingly depend on how they effectively create new knowledge. Drawing on relevant theories, this study examined the associations of organizational knowledge creation (OKC) with employee expertise and the quality of
interpersonal relationships. It also investigated the moderating role of transformational leadership in explaining these
relationships. Along with multiple preliminary data analyses, hierarchical liner modeling was performed to analyze multilevel data collected from 218 white-collar employees from 44 teams in diverse U.S. organizations.
The study results indicated that employee expertise and the quality of
interpersonal relationships are positively associated with OKC. A positive relationship of OKC with transformational leadership was also supported. Unexpectedly, a negative moderating role of transformational leadership was found in explaining the relationship between OKC and the quality of
interpersonal relationships. In other words, when transformational leadership is high, the positive association between OKC and the quality of
interpersonal relationships is attenuated. However, there was no significant moderating effect of transformational leadership in explaining the relationship between OKC and employee expertise. That is, the impact of employee expertise on OKC is generally positive regardless of the degree to which transformational leadership is exercised.
This study contributes to both the organizational knowledge creation and leadership literature. For the organizational knowledge creation literature, it expands our understanding of how the three essential elements (i.e., ba, knowledge assets, and the SECI process) of organizational knowledge creation influence and interact with each other. The current study has value in providing first empirical evidence of unique combinations of variables influencing organizational knowledge creation process. For the leadership literature, this study sheds light on a contingent or even negative side of transformational leadership. From a practical standpoint, this study contributes to white-collar organizations wanting to increase their capabilities for organizational knowledge creation by informing individual and contextual enablers and understanding the interplay among them. HR practitioners and management should provide their employees with HR interventions that help increase employee expertise and cultivate positive
interpersonal relationships in the workplace. As for leadership development, transformational leadership training is recommended, but with some caveats. Research agendas for future scholars are also suggested along with the study limitations.

▼ M.Ed.
It is clear to me that the need for the teacher and the school to provide educational help and support is greater than ever before. With reference to democratic values in a multicultural society Le Roux (1997:1) is of the opinion that teachers have a lot of responsibility for both “what” and “how” learners learn. To gain better understanding in the “functioning” of the modern educational system it is of the utmost importance to investigate “how” educational goals are attained in the modern classroom. In accordance with this reasoning not only the content of the teaching and learning experience is important but also the process of educational communication (Du Plessis, 1974:5). Especially where education is viewed as help and support to the youth, the helping relationship between teachers and the learners in their care occupies a central position (Okun, 2002:21). In accordance with this view teacher and learners in this study will be seen as senders and receivers of educational verbal and non verbal messages (Goleman, 1996:116; Goleman, 2006:14; Johnson, 2006:126). If the helping relationship is of great importance to teaching and learning and if this relationship is built and maintained via teacher-learner communication, how does the experience of aggression while communicating with their teachers affect learners? What is learners’ experience of aggression while communicating with their teachers? What can be done about the experience of aggression during teacher-learner communication? This research was done in two phases. In PHASE 1 the goal was to explore and describe grade eleven learners’ experience of aggression while communicating with their teachers. In PHASE 2 the goal was the description of guidelines for communication between secondary school learners and their teachers with special reference to the handling of aggression in the communication and relationship. It is a qualitative investigation to explore and to describe learners’ experience of aggression while communicating with their teachers. The research rests on Phenomenological principles and methods (Giorgi, 2002). I followed a functional approach and the research is carried out with the view of improving my own educational practice as well as educational practice in general. The method of data collection followed is a qualitative interpretive constructivist approach to the generation of new knowledge and the specific method employed is phenomenological interviews. The research was conducted at an ex-Model C school. The sample was purposive and grade 11 learners were given an opportunity to participate in the research on a voluntary basis. Grade eleven learners were given opportunity because, in my view, in general, they have both enough experience with teachers and the vocabulary to talk about a complex phenomenon such as the experience of aggression. The methods and procedures employed made extensive use of triangulation with a view to enhancing trustworthiness. Twelve individual phenomenological interviews were conducted as well as a focus…

A segunda parte consiste no estudo empírico. Participaram 176 alunos do Ensino Básico; 11 professores do ensino regular e 5 professores do ensino especial.
This dissertation analyzes the perception of the type of relationship established between regular/special teachers and students with special learning disabilities in relation to other pupils of the inclusive classroom. It were applied 176 questionnaires corresponding to students involved in the study by regular teachers and 22 students by special teachers. To evaluate the relationship between pairs it was applied a sociometric to all 176 students.
The first part reviews the literature about the inclusion, disability and
interpersonal relationship. The second part consists of an empirical study. 176 students participated in the Basic Education; 11 regular teachers and five special education teachers. The data analysis allowed us to infer that the perception of regular teachers towards all students is more dependent, as well as perception of both teachers towards to students with learning disabilities. Pairs do not always accept the inclusion of different children.

This thesis focuses on the impact that the use of the Internet has in today´s
