▼ Opinnäytetyön tarkoitus oli tutkia erään kartonkitehtaan päällystysosan kuivatuksen optimointia mottlingin ja IGT-pintalujuuden kannalta. Vuonna 2017 kartonkitehtaalle investoitiin pintapäällystysasemalle tehokas infrakuivain, jonka optimaalisia ajo-olosuhteita ei ollut testattu vielä koeajoin. Kirjallisen osuuden ja operaattoreiden kokemusten perusteella tässä työssä tehtiin tutkimus päällysteen kuivatusparametreistä sekä niiden vaikutuksia lopputuotteen laatuun. Koeajoja suoritettiin yhteensä neljä ja koepisteitä tuli 18 kappaletta. Koepisteistä mitattiin laboratoriossa IGT-pintalujuudet, minkä jälkeen koepisteiden arkit lähetettiin painettavaksi Hämeenlinnan Offset-Kolmio Paino Oy:lle. Painetut arkit arvioitiin visuaalisesti kvantitatiivista tutkimusmenetelmää hyödyntäen laboratoriohenkilökunnan avustuksella. Infralla tehdyissä koeajoissa huomattiin tehokkaan kuivatuksen ja kahden ylimmän poltinrivistön käytön parantavan IGT-pintalujuutta. Koeajo tehtiin nopealla koneen nopeudella, joten kyseinen tulos ei ole pätevä hitaammilla nopeuksilla, jolloin tehokas päällysteen kuivaaminen voi aiheuttaa jähmepisteen saavuttamisen liian varhain. Suurteholeijuilla lämpötilan laskeminen paransi IGT-pintalujuutta. Matalammalla lämmöllä pinta jää huokoisemmaksi, jolloin seuraava kerros tarttuu paremmin kiinni ja lujuus paranee. Painetuissa arkeissa ei ilmennyt missään koepisteessä mottlingia. Niiden painojälki oli hyvää ja niin tasalaatuista, ettei niitä saatu paremmuusjärjestykseen visuaalisissa arvioinneissa. Suurteholeijuilla on totuttu pitämään turhan korkeita lämpötiloja, joten operaattoreita tulisi tiedottaa ja asianmukaisesti ohjeistaa tämän suhteen. Matalammat lämmöt suurteholeijuilla parantavat IGT-pintalujuuden lisäksi energiatehokkuutta. Koeajojen perusteella todettiin, että kuivatuskapasiteettia on reilusti ja sen ajomahdollisuudet ovat laajat ilman vaikutuksia ajettavuuteen tai painojälkeen. Kuivatuskapasiteetin riittävyys mahdollistaisi tulevaisuudessa esimerkiksi koneen nopeuden nostoa tai päällysteen kuiva-ainepitoisuuden nostoa. Tutkimus jättää avoimeksi jatkotutkimusta varten kysymyksen suurteholeijujen puhallusnopeuksien muutoksien vaikutuksista sekä infra 8:n lämpötilojen muutoksien vaikutuksista kahdella ylimmällä poltinrivistöllä. Luottamuksellinen aineisto on poistettu julkisesta versiosta.; The purpose of this thesis was to search the optimization for mottling and IGT picking strength of the coating station in certain Board Mill. In 2017, board mill invested in a surface coating head with an efficient infrared dryer that had not been tested before for optimum driving conditions. This thesis compares the drying parameters of the coating and their effects on the quality of the final product, test runs were based on the written contribution and the operator’s experience. ▼ Despite a large number of studies during the last decade that investigated mucosal immunity in humans, very few works have been done on this immune compartment in lower vertebrates. In the following two studies we focused on the mucosal immunoglobulins in two important species of two classes of ectothermic vertebrates: amphibians and bony fishes. Many studies address the influence of the gut microbiome on the immune system, but few dissect the effect of T cells on gut microbiota and mucosal responses. We have employed larval thymectomy in Xenopus to study the gut microbiota with and without the influence of T lymphocytes. Pyrosequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA genes was used to assess the relative abundance of bacterial groups present in the stomach, and the small and large intestine. Clostridiaceae were the most abundant family throughout the gut, while Bacteroidaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, and Flavobacteriaceae also were well represented. Unifrac analysis revealed no differences in microbiota distribution between thymectomized and unoperated frogs. This is consistent with immunization data showing that levels of the mucosal immunoglobulin IgX are not altered significantly by thymectomy. This study in Xenopus represents the oldest organisms that exhibit class switch to a mucosal isotype and is relevant to mammalian immunology, as IgA appears to have evolved from IgX based upon phylogeny, genomic synteny, and function. It is now appreciated that in addition to the immunoglobulin (Ig)M and D isotypes fish also make the mucosal IgT. In this study we sequenced the full length of Ig tau as well as mu in the commercially important Thunnus orientalis (Pacific bluefin tuna), the first analysis of both of these Ig isotypes in a member of the order Perciformes. Tuna IgM and IgT are each composed of four constant (CH) domains. We cloned and sequenced 48 different variable (VH) domain rearrangements of tuna immunoglobulins and grouped the VH gene sequences to four VH gene segment families based on 70% nucleotide identity. Three VH gene families were used by both IgM and IgT but one group was only found to be used by IgM. Most interestingly, both Ig mu and Ig tau clones appear to use the same diversity (DH) segment, unlike what has been described in other species, although they have dedicated IgT and IgM joining (JH) gene segments. We complemented this repertoire study with phylogenetic and tissue expression analysis. In addition to supporting the development of humoral vaccines in this important aquaculture species, these data suggest that the DH-JH recombination rather than the VH-DH recombination may be instructive for IgT versus IgM/D bearing lymphocyte lineages in some fish. ▼ An essential part of daily functioning is decision-making and an emotion which influences that is anxiety. In humans it has been shown that individuals with a high degree of Trait anxiety (TA) perform poorly on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a task which measures the capacity to make efficient choices (Miu et al., 2008). Key areas playing a role in decision-making are the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex (Bechara et al., 1997, 1998). Interestingly these areas also play a vital role in anxiety (Kim and Gorman, 2005) which may explain the association. This study is based on the study of Miu et al. (2008) to investigate if comparable results can be obtained. Male subjects were recruited. They filled in the Dutch version of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), after which the participants completed the IGT. Furthermore cortisol was measured to examine the influence of stress. As a control for general effects on cognition, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST) was used. Participants were divided in low, medium and high anxiety groups. It was observed that a high degree of anxiety is associated with less efficient choices in the IGT. However the results of Miu et al. (2008), which showed that low-anxious individuals perform better than high-anxious participants, are not similar to the results of this study. Miu et al. (2008) uses both male and female participants, with a higher number of females. In this study only male participants were used. The difference in results indicates that there might be a gender effect. Males with a low degree of anxiety may show more risk taking behaviour and males with a high degree of anxiety may show more risk avoidance behaviour, which may explain the relatively high number of wrong choices in low and high TA groups. The TA did not seem to have a major influence on the WCST, however a correlation between TA and perserverative errors was found. No increase in cortisol levels was observed during testing which indicates that stress has no influence on the results. Advisors/Committee Members: Bos, dr. R van den.

▼ Um vasto número de investigações tem demonstrado a existência de défices nas funções executivas em toxicodependentes, são muitos os estudos que mostram alterações significativas em diferentes componentes das funções executivas em indivíduos com um historial de poli-consumo de substâncias psicoactivas. A literatura especializada mostra evidências que indivíduos toxicodependentes apresentam défices comportamentais similares a pacientes neurológicos com lesões no lobo pré-frontal. Por outro lado, os toxicodependentes não só apresentam um défice no seu funcionamento executivo, mas também na sua capacidade de tomada de decisão. O objectivo do presente estudo é comparar a performance executiva e a capacidade de tomada de decisão de sujeitos toxicodependentes a um grupo de controlo. Finalmente, e tendo em conta que a capacidade de tomada de decisão está profundamente relacionada com o lobo pré-frontal, e altamente associada com as funções executivas, foi realizada uma correlação entre a performance executiva e a capacidade de tomada de decisão no grupo de toxicodependentes, de forma a melhor perceber a relação entre estas duas dimensões, com o objectivo final de obter uma nova perspectiva no que concerne a esta problemática. A nossa amostra foi constituída por 96 participantes, organizados em dois grupos: um grupo de toxicodependentes (n = 65), e um grupo de controlo (n = 31). A todos os grupos foram administradas as provas BADS e a IGT. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que o grupo de toxicodependentes apresenta resultados decrescidos em ambas as provas, quando comparados com o grupo de controlo. Por fim, quando correlacionados os perfis finais da BADS com a performance na IGT, foi observada uma correlação positiva. O que nos permite concluir que os toxicodependentes com piores Profile score mostram mais dificuldade na sua tomada de decisões importantes na sua vida quotidiana, o que levanta a hipótese destes terem uma maior preponderância para tomar piores decisões.

▼ Stress activates a variety of processes in the human body. An important example includes the activation of the HPA-axis which results in an increase of the stress hormone cortisol. Besides this stress affects other parts and functions of the brain, amongst which the amygdala and prefrontal cortex that play an important role in the process of decision-making. This leads to the assumption that stress affects this process of decision making. This research-project addresses the question how and whether stress, activated by an acute social stressor, affects the process of long-term decision-making, i.e. the results achieved during the IOWA Gambling Task. In order to generate stress, a variant of the Trier Social Stress Test has been used for the purpose of this research-project. This includes a task that the participant can only carry out by using its full "mental" abilities, which leads to a stress response that includes the activation of the HPA-axis. In order too check the reaction of the HPA-axis, cortisol samples are taken at several times during the experiment. A number of 36 females participated and completed the experiment. The females were randomly divided in to two groups: the stress group (23) and the control group (13). Certain participants were excluded from the project in order to prevent any disruptions in a person's decision making ability in general or his or her balance of cortisol, dopamine, or serotonin through external factors. This includes: females with a psychiatric disorder, a BMI lower than 18 or higher than 24, as well as participants who used medication, drugs, or excessively used alcohol, nicotine or caffeine. After 15 minutes of relaxation, the stress group started a +/- 15 minute Stress Test wherein they were exposed to acute social stress. Instead of this Stress Test, the control group spent another 15 minute period of relaxation. After this, both groups participated in the IOWA Gambling Task. The differences in performance between the stress and control group during the IOWA Gambling Task resulted in several conclusions. First of all, the average cumulative budget per block of 20 trials between the two groups was compared. This showed that none of the five blocks significantly differed in terms of budget. Secondly, differences in the number of times participants in the stress or control group chose cards from the 'good' or 'bad' stacks per block of 20 trials were analyzed. This showed that there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of selecting 'good' or 'bad' stacks of cards. However it appeared that participants who were exposed to the social stress of the Stress Test completed the IOWA Gambling Task (190,6 seconds) significantly faster with similar results as the control group (250,1 seconds). Lastly, the investigation results showed that the exposure to social stress did not lead to an increase of short term decisions, as was assumed at the start of this research project. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between decision making and emotional reactions in compulsive shoppers (CS) and non-compulsive shoppers (NCS). Evaluating decision making associated with emotional reactions involved in the process are unknown when comparing studies between CS and NCS groups in relation to impulse buying. The sample consisted of 35 consumers, divided among 25 compulsive shoppers (CS) and 10 non-compulsive shoppers (NCS). The methodological procedures were based on the analysis of decision making and emotional reactions detected by Electrodermal Activity (EDA / SCR), while participants performed the task presented in the decisional evaluation Iowa Glambing Task - IGT. The results of this study show a significant difference in decision making between CSs and NCSs, which correlates with the overall net score on the IGT task. These findings are suggestive of the occurrence of an impulsive cognitive style from the CSs compared to NCSs in regards to the ability of decision making by choosing disadvantageous choices in order to obtain more immediate gains. The results of Electrodermal Activity (EDA / SCR) revealed that the group of NCSs had higher scores on the magnitude scale of SCRs in advantageous choices, which reveals an emotional bond to the CNCs with pre-advantageous choices. Unlike the pattern of responses from the group of CSs, the members of NCSs show no emotional conflict and no significant somatic state when faced with choices during the IGT task. This suggests that in this particular sample, all the situations are equivalent for NCS individuals. The results obtained in this research will enable the study of factors that may represent the vulnerability of compulsive shoppers, contributing to the development of frameworks about behavior of the consumer and cognitive impairment, which deserve attention from Marketing and Psychology areas and prevention interventions in public policy.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a associação entre a tomada de decisão e as reações emocionais em compradores compulsivos (CCs) e em compradores não compulsivos (CNCs). Até o momento, são desconhecidos estudos que comparem CCs a um grupo de CNCs, em relação ao impulso de comprar, à avaliação da tomada de decisão e à associação entre as reações emocionais envolvidas. A amostra foi composta por 35 consumidores, divididos entre 25 compradores compulsivos (CCs) e 10 compradores não compulsivos (CNCs). Os procedimentos metodológicos foram baseados na análise da tomada de decisão e as reações emocionais detectadas pela Atividade Eletrodérmica (EDA/SCR), enquanto os participantes executavam uma tarefa de avaliação decisional, Iowa Glambing Task IGT. ▼ Decision-making under conditions of uncertainity and risk is an essential part of human life. Every day we are required to make complex choices between often conflicting options, of which we can only partially estimate the outcome. Frequently, we are faced with the possibility to choose either for the instant gratification of our needs, which may however result in negative long-term consequences, or for a course of action which may lead to high payoffs in the future: in such cases, refraining from responding to immediate reward cues is essential to engage in behaviours that are adaptive in the long-term. Therefore, it is not surprising that disruptions of decision-making-associated functions in humans have a severe negative impact on the quality of life of the affected individuals, and that such abnormalities have been proposed to represent crucial factors for the development and/or the maintenance of a variety of psychiatric disorders, such as drug addiction, alcohol abuse, and pathological gambling. For the study of long-term efficiency of behaviour and decision-making under ambiguity in humans, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) represents one of the most precious experimental tools available to neuroscientists today. In fact, this test manages to incorporate in its design the unpredictability of options' outcomes, the need to weight risks and benefits associated to each available option, and the necessity to exert behavioural control to better perform in the long-term. Additionally, choices made in the IGT are suggested to be the product of both “cold” (explicit – rational) and “hot” (implicit – emotional) option evaluation processes, which compresence commonly characterizes real-life decisions. From its first employment as a test assessing specific cognitive impairments of prefrontal cortex-damaged individuals, the task subsequently found application in the assessment of decision-making deficiencies in a variety of other clinical conditions. The results of such studies have not only helped to better characterize these pathologies, but have in addition contributed to expand significantly our knowledge of neural substrates underlying decision-making, and how their function is compromised in individuals with related deficits. Research on humans however presents a number of limitations, stemming from problems of practical and ethical nature: thus, the development of an animal model of the IGT has been recently considered, and first experimental paradigms have already been proposed for rodents. However, in order to be able to employ such tasks as research tools, a fundamental question that needs be answered beforehand is whether animal IGT paradigms can satisfy face, predictive and construct validity criteria. To date, for each of these translational IGT models the issue of validity has only partially been addressed. ▼ PAPRO operates within the Forest Research company and their mission is to develop value-addingindustry solutions. At present there are no good ways for mills to easily test the printing quality on newsprintpaper. There is a great need for a fast way to do this on different paper qualities; with a laboratory-offset press this can be both a time and money saving method. At PAPRO Forest Research, NewZealand, a laboratory offset press has been developed and designed, during the past seven years, concerningthis issue. Earlier projects were made concerning the press, e.g. to establish the optimal settings.The mission with this project was to partly determine the present variability of the print quality andto evaluate if the fountain solution, distilled water and 2% Diol green concentrate, used at the momentmixed with different percentages of Isopropanol could decrease the variability and contribute to morestabile results. Throughout the whole project the print quality showed a high variation and was evenmore variable when the Isopropanol was added. All in all 50 print rounds times twelve printed paperstrips was carried out through the project divided into three parts. To analyse the print quality, amicroscope with an image capture camera has been used. Data from the taken images was analysedand inserted into charts to see the variations.The conclusions of the whole project are not satisfying because no final evaluations were possible tomake. Main conclusions are that the additive of Isopropanol to the ordinary fountain solution, used atpresent, only contributed to more unstable results of the print quality. And it seems to be difficult toget some stable results from the lab press as long as the room where it is placed is not fully conditionedas required for the process of offset printing. And the fact that the airbrush which applies theamount of fountain solution is also variable, as shown in earlier projects, which contributes to unstableresults as well. For further work more exact parameters as a conditioned room are required and thepossibility to further design the laboratory press to use waterless offset printing instead.

▼ Atherosclerosis in 64-year-old women with diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance The incidence of obesity and type-2 diabetes (t2D) is rising around the world. T2D is accompanied by an increased risk of macrovascular, atherosclerotic diseases. The timing of the disease process and exact mechanism underlying the association between diabetes and atherosclerotic disease are not known. High-resolution B-mode ultrasound is a non-invasive technique to measure very early atherosclerotic disease as the intima-media thickness (IMT) and to assess occurrence, size and echogenicity of atherosclerotic plaques in superficial arteries such as the carotid arteries. Remodelling, i.e a change in vascular diameter in response to atherosclerosis may also be examined. The overallaim of this thesis was to examine the occurrence of early atherosclerosis in t2D and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Our hypothesis was that there is a gradual enlargement of IMT and an increased occurrence of plaques, especially echolucent plaques, with worsening glucose tolerance, accompanied by a remodelling that might be visible already in subjects with IGT. Inorder to summarise current knowledge a systematic reviews were made in order to identify cross-sectional studies using the ultrasound method. The differences between IMT in t2D or IGT and control subjects were calculated. Meta-analysis using random-effects model was used to calculate summary measures. In a cross-sectional study, the entire cohort of 64 years old women in Göteborg were invited to take part in a screening examination. Of these, 2595 participated and underwent anthropometric measurements and an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) that was repeated within two weeks. Ultrasound examinations were made in a cohort of women with known (n=99) and new diabetes (n=106), IGT (n=205) and NGT (n=188). In the systematic review of 23 studies we found that t2D was associated with an 0.13 mm increase in IMT compared to controls. There was a considerable heterogeneity between the studies that complicated the interpretation of the meta-analysis. This difference can be interpreted as if the diabetic patients were ten years older than the control group and that they had an elevated risk for stroke and myocardial infarction. In patients with IGT, the increase in IMT was about 25% of that observed in diabetes. The screening examination showed that 10% of the women had diabetes of whom half were newly detected. Without repeated OGTTs 37% of the new diabetes would have been missed. The women with t2D had larger IMT and plaqueareas compared to women in IGT and NGT groups. The plaques were most frequenty echolucent. In the IGT group, no increase in atherosclerosis was observed, but the result was within the confidenceinterval of the meta-analysis, indicating that IGT is associated with a small increase in IMT in the CCA (0.03mm). ▼ Background: Indigenous communities in Canada face significant challenges with trauma and substance use disorders (SUD). Most Elders, traditional healers and Indigenous scholars agree that connecting to culture, land, community, and spiritual practices is a pathway to healing trauma and SUD in Indigenous peoples. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the blending of Indigenous healing practices (IHP) and a mainstream treatment model, Seeking Safety (SS), resulted in a reduction of intergenerational trauma (IGT) symptoms and SUD. The SS model has been studied in other populations but there was no evidence of its effectiveness with Indigenous peoples. Some studies have shown the positive impact of Indigenous healing practices on SUD. Methods: A mixed-methods design was used to evaluate the impact of a 13-week Indigenous healing practices and Seeking Safety (IHPSS) implementation project. This was a pilot study with one group of 12 Indigenous women and one group of 12 Indigenous men (n = 24) in Northern Ontario. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted at the end of treatment. The transcripts underwent qualitative thematic analysis to depict themes and understand the ways in which the program promoted healing. Data was collected pre- and post-implementation using the following assessment tools: the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (TSC-40), the Addiction Severity Index-Lite (ASI-Lite), the Historical Loss Scale (HLS), and the Historical Loss Associated Symptom Scale (HLASS). The effectiveness of the new program was assessed using paired t-tests, with the TSC-40 as the main outcome. Results: A total of 17 participants completed the study. Four core themes emerged from the qualitative data that showed a positive impact on the symptoms and behaviors related to IGT and addiction in the participants. The benefits from both Indigenous healing practices and SS were clearly depicted through the voices and viewpoints of all 17 participants. Participants demonstrated improvement in the trauma symptoms, as measured by the TSC-40, with a mean decrease of 23.9 (SD=6.4, p=0.001) points, represented a 55% improvement from baseline. Furthermore, all six TSC-40 subscales demonstrated a significant decrease: anxiety (p = 0.001); depression (p=0.000); sexual abuse trauma index (p=0.0011); sleep disturbance (p=0.003); dissociation (p=0.027); and sexual problems (p=0.037). Substance use did not increase as measured by the ASI-Lite alcohol composite score (mean difference = -0.011) and drug composite score (mean difference = 0.032). Conclusion: Evidence from this mixed-methods pilot study indicates that blending IHP with the SS model was beneficial in reducing trauma symptoms. The combination of IHP and mainstream healing methods has the potential to enhance the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples.

▼ The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a proper press sequence for a specific set of process inks on a specified type of paper. In the past, the literature on this subject has been of a qualitative and generalized nature. This study attempts to put the matter on a quantative basis under strict controls. A standard set of process proofing inks for web offset are chosen to be printed onto a coated type of offset paper by an IGT Printability Tester. Various techniques are devised for printing solid strips of the inks with minimum density variation across each strip and from strip to strip. The density range of each ink is found by employing various techniques devised by the manufacturer of the IGT, and by using mathematical formulas. The density of each ink is plotted against its ink quantity, as read by each of three filters on a densitometer: Green, Yellow and Blue. The GATF formulas for determining the color characteristics of process inks are then employed. The results are tables for each ink showing the theoretical density of each filter reading at specified ink quantities, with the GATF Hue Error, Grayness and Efficiency factors included for those ink quantities. These tables allow for the predicted result of any overprints at specified ink quantities by adding the density of each filter reading at the desired ink quantity of each ink. In order to be as accurate as possible, a special technique is devised to read both single and overprint densities of ink films printed on the IGT. Overprints are made using an IGT Printability Tester, and a densitometer to compare actual to predicted values. Under controlled trapping, all conditions are kept constant, but the sequence is reversed. The sequence that comes the closest to the predicted values is the preferred sequence. This is found to be: Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. Although a preferred color sequence does exist for the set of inks used in this study, it is pointed out that a change in this sequence may help the overall result in certain cases. A Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) é uma prova de avaliação neuropsicológica utilizada com o intuito de avaliar a tomada de decisão do indivíduo. Estudos indicam que indivíduos que manifestem alterações na região dorso-lateral e ventro-medial do córtex pré-frontal apresentam um comprometimento cognitivo no que diz respeito ao seu funcionamento executivo, nomeadamente em relação à sua tomada de decisão. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste estudo é analisar as qualidades psicométricas da IGT, através do cálculo da consistência interna e validade convergente, e também perceber se existem diferenças no desempenho da IGT em dois grupos clínicos. A amostra deste estudo é constituída por 114 participantes, sendo que foram incluídos dois grupos clínicos: indivíduos com diagnóstico de esquizofrenia (n=31) e indivíduos com diagnóstico de perturbação por uso de álcool (n=83). Verificou-se que a IGT tem uma consistência interna credível, mas não se observaram correlações com as medidas convergentes. Verificou-se também que, de uma forma geral, não existem diferenças, a nível do perfil de desempenho, nos dois grupos clínicos, o que sugere um padrão de comprometimento similar entre estas populações.

Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a neuropsychological test used with the purpose of assessing subject´s decision making. Studies show that subjects who manifest alterations in the dorsolateral and ventro medial prefrontal cortex has a cognitive impairment regarding their executive functions, mainly concerning their decision making. In this way, the objective of this study is not only to analyse ITG´s psychometric properties through the determination of internal consistency and the convergence validity but also to analyse if there are any differences in the performance of IGT in two different clinical groups. This study´s sample consists of 114 participants divided into two clinical groups: individuals with schizophrenia (n=31) and individuals with alcohol abuse disorder (n=83). It was shown that IGT has a credible internal consistency but it was not observed a correlation with the convergence measurements. It was also shown that there are no differences in the performance profile of both clinical groups which suggests a similar behavior pattern in these two populations.

▼ The original intent of this research was to verify that a new method - called the Little Joe method in this report - could be used to verify that CMY offset inks conform to ISO 2846. This method would use less time to generate multiple ink film thicknesses (IFTs) than the traditionally used ISO 2834 method. With a graduated gage, a Little Joe proofer can be used to produce multiple IFTs on a single sample. However, the absolute thickness values for those IFTs are unknown. Therefore, to calibrate these unknown IFTs, a calibration curve that relates IFT and optical density should be used. Such a curve would have to be built based on samples produced by the method described in ISO 2834 using an IGT printability tester. The question is: will both methods (the traditional ISO 2834 method and the Little Joe method), either accept or reject a given sample? This research found that the same IFTs on both samples do not have the same colorimetric values. The ink film was not as smooth on the Little Joe prints as it was on the IGT prints. The presence of tiny white spots throughout the Little Joe sample add a gray component to the color. The difference in smoothness of the ink layer on the Little Joe proofer comes from the ink not being "worked" as much as it is on the distribution rollers of the IGT printer. Therefore, the ink is less liquid and not able to completely spread out and cover the paper. The answer to the research question is that the two methods do not both either accept or reject a given sample. Towards the conclusion of this research, Professor Franz Sigg and the researcher made some improvement to the traditional ISO 2834 method and eventually invented a more efficient method: the modified ISO 2834 method. A high input volume of ink (0.1 cc) was applied to the IGT inking unit. Then, while the inking unit was kept running without adding new ink, the disc was weighed before and after each print and was then re-inked to made another print. As samples were printed, the ink on the inking unit was reduced, producing prints with progressively thinner ink film thicknesses in rapid progression since no cleaning was needed between prints. This allowed the prints to be produced in a much shorter time than with the original ISO 2834 method. The result of the modified ISO 2834 method agreed with that of the original method within a tolerance of 1 DeltaE. Therefore, both methods can accept or reject a given sample at the same time. ▼ An investigation was made into one of the newer planographic printing plates, specifically 3M's Dry Plate. This plate is part of the system more popularly known as driography. As with many new processes, driography is beset with several problems. These include plate durability, substrate suitability, and toning. This study deals with the problem of toning and a. method for investigating it. In driography, toning is defined as the inking of the non-image background of the plate. Several factors are thought to have an effect on the amount of toning. Factors such as ink tack, ink temperature, room temperature, humidity, speed, and pressure are included. This investigation specifically researched the relationships between toning and ink tack, inking pressure, and printing speed. A parallel study of these relationships was made on both an IGT Printability Tester and on an ATF Chief 15 press. This was done in an attempt to show that the IGT Printability Tester could print driographically but, under the conditions used, it was a poor predictor of toning. Two methods of recording the effects of toning were used. One method was the recording of absolute densities taken in the non-image areas of the test sheets. The other method was the recording of a. ratio of the density of a solid patch to the density- of a tinted patch. It was hoped that the ratio would eliminate some of the extraneous variables that might affect the amount of toning. It was found, however, that the ratio result tended to record not only the pure toning, but also, the effects of some of the extraneous variables. Several statistical methods v/ere used to analyze the data accumulated. To compare one printing method with another and to compare one recording method with another, a correlation analysis was made and a graphical study done. To determine the reliability of the graphical analysis, a spot check was made using a paired comparison technique. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was made of the data from each printing and recording method to determine the significant factors in the experiment. This experiment showed that ink tack, inking pressure, printing speed, and their interactions all were significant factors in toning. Unfortunately it was impossible to include some other factors in the experiment which are known to have a significant effect on toning. These include such factors as ink temperature, room temperature, and humidity. More work needs to be done in the area of driography, especially in toning. The crucial question is whether this is a plate or an ink problem. As more control is obtained over toning, the use of driography should increase.
