▼ Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operating in hotel sector are perceived to be underperforming partly due to their failure to adopt Conventional Management Accounting Practices (CMAPs). This study sought to determine the extent to which SMEs operating in the hotel sector of the Cape Metropole have adopted CMAPs. Specifically, the study aimed to assess the suitability of CMAPs to SMEs, the extent for which SMEs have adopted CMAPs, the perceived usefulness of the CMAPs adopted, and the factors that inhibit SMEs from adopting CMAPs. The study was motivated by a lack of research on the adoption of CMAPs by SMEs operating in the hotel sector. Data was collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire survey. Purposeful sampling method was employed to draw the sample of 100 respondents. The findings of the study revealed that CMAPs are perceived to be suitable for the sampled SMEs as most of these entities need accounting information to: analyse their risks and uncertainty, optimise on their utilisation of scarce resources and require accurate data on costs of various products. As far as the extent of adoption of CMAPs is concerned, the study revealed that although most of the sampled SMEs had adopted some of the CMAPs, budgeting was the only CMAP that was used to great extent by a majority of the sampled SMEs. Other CMAPs, such as variance analysis, and cost, volume and profit analysis were only used by a minority of the sampled SMEs. Concerning the perceived usefulness of the CMAPs adopted, the findings of the study also revealed that only budgeting and forecasting were perceived to be useful by a majority of the sampled SMEs. Other CMAPs such as variance analysis were only perceived to be useful by only a minority of the sampled SMEs. The findings further revealed that most of the sampled SMEs faced various factors that inhibited them from adopting CMAPs. Key among the factors were a lack of skills to adopt CMAPs as well as a lack of resources. This study does not only contribute significantly to the literature on the adoption of CMAPs by filling in the gap in the literature in the South African context. The study also provides invaluable insights on the adoption of CMAPs which should be of value to t the Department of Small Business Development and Small Enterprises Development agency (SEDA), as the findings can inform their interventions aimed at reducing the high failure rate of SMEs in South Africa, by for instance developing a CMAPs training programme for SMEs. The findings may also assist SMEs to improve their adoption of CMAPs with a view to optimising the benefits derived, as well as overcoming the factors that inhibit them from adopting CMAPs. ▼ O presente trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar a implementação da contabilidade de gestão no setor de construção civil, de forma a permitir um maior controlo dos custos e proveitos da empresa. Para cada centro de custos é estabelecido um orçamento em harmonia com o plano estratégico organizacional, realizando-se periodicamente a análise de desvios para evitar que o resultado fique muito distante do planeado. Porém, isto é apenas possível se tivermos uma contabilidade analítica bem desenvolvida dentro da organização. Com base numa revisão bibliográfica é discutida a implementação da contabilidade de gestão nas empresas de construção civil. O trabalho tem como pano de fundo o caso da empresa Griner Engenharia, S.A., permitindo uma análise mais concreta e profunda da temática em análise, contribuindo desta forma para que as empresas de construção civil, e não só, entendam a contabilidade de gestão como uma ferramenta de gestão, seja ao nível de controlo, tomada de decisão, bem como para avaliação do desempenho; ABSTRACT: This research aims to present the implementation of management accounting in the construction sector, to allow greater control of costs and revenues of the company. For each cost center is set a budget in line with the organizational strategic plan, performing variance analysis periodically to prevent the result can be far from planned. However, this is only possible if we have an analytical accounting system well developed within the organization. Based on a literature review, we discuss the implementation of management accounting in construction companies. The research has the background of the case company Griner Engineering, SA, allowing a more concrete and deep thematic analysis, thus contributing to the construction companies, and not only understand the management accounting as a management tool, either in the level of control, decision making as for performance evaluation. Building Information Modelling “BIM” has become a well-known collaboration procedure in the Building Construction Industry. Property/Home Owners are challenging Architectural, Engineering and Construction companies to provide some form of BIM Services. Evidence exist on the implementation of BIM in the Building construction field in other parts of the world especially in Australia, United Kingdom and many parts of the United States of America. Surprisingly, its implementation is yet to even be discussed in literature in Ghana and other African developing countries. The study, therefore is aimed at exploring the benefits and barriers confronting BIM implementation in the Ghanaian Building Construction Industry. The aim was anchored on the following objectives to identify areas of possible BIM use to identify paybacks with use of BIM looking at the Ghanaian Construction Industry; and to also identify the barriers to its implementation. Data collected was further analysed using mean score ranking and relative importance index. The study adopted survey approach whereby Primary data was collected from respondents including construction managers and other professionals in the Building Construction Industry, Architect, Engineers, and Quantity Surveyors etc. The study identified Building Information Modelling uses for construction, preconstruction and post construction phases as well. The study concluded BIM as tool to assist Building construction planning. The significant benefits with the use of BIM is the improved conception of the task of construction, enhanced communication between project players and improved scheduling proficiency. Despite these potentials, the following key barriers were identified against the implementation, BIM set-up costs, Lack of awareness on it, Risk Exposure, and. Culture opposition. From findings, it is recommended that BIM (4D modelling) ought to be implemented in the Building Construction Industry and an Act of Parliament to give it a legal backing in order to explore the full potentials and further be developed as a standard in the Ghanaian Building industry. The study exhibits a significant epitome in the area of BIM in Ghana. The study is of utmost utility to construction professionals.

▼ The primary objective of this study was to summarize the budgeting procedures used by public school homemaking teachers in Oregon. It was hoped the results of the study would: 1. Benefit teacher education in preparing future teachers to cope with the intricacies involved in developing workable budgets. 2. Help administrators in their work with the homemaking department and the general budget. 3. Help initiate new teachers to the homemaking program. 4. Aid current teachers in evaluating and revising ongoing budgets. A questionnaire constructed by the author and developmentally tested included provisions for assessing (1) background data, (2) specifics pertaining to budgeting practices, (3) the role of budgeting in the content areas, (4) what the homemaking budget was expected to cover, and (5) possible avenues which financially support the department. The systematic sample included 25 percent of the public school homemaking departments in Oregon. A 73 percent return was received from the sample. Data showed 18 percent of the teachers had only one year of teaching experience and 50 percent of the teachers had less than six years. Of the teachers with one year of teaching experience, 83 percent did not feel adequately prepared and of those with less than six years of teaching experience, 56 percent did not feel adequately prepared to develop budgets. Only 63 percent of all the respondents felt adequately prepared to develop budgets. Forty-nine percent of the teachers reported that budgeting help was available in their districts, however most teachers felt trial and error, and work experience had been a dominant factor in their departmental financial management. It would seem that more guidance is imperative at both the university level in teacher education and at the school district level if teachers are to have the essential budgeting skills in their early years of teaching. Seventy-seven percent of the elementary and junior high school (JHS) and 86 percent of the senior high school (SHS) teachers reported that they knew the amounts of money remaining in their budget. Ninety-three percent reported avenues that were available for supporting their department, but only 67 percent of the JHS and 63 percent of the SHS teachers actually reported the amounts of money that were available for their use. Likewise, only 43 percent of the JHS and 56 percent of the SHS teachers reported how many students they had and how much money they could spend for each content area. It is the author's contention that if the homemaking teacher is to maximize the educational offerings of the homemaking program she must keep current on the status of the resources available to her, a procedure apparently not practiced due to the above contradicting responses. From the data collected, a close correlation between the two educational levels could be seen in terms of which content areas most often received financial support and what the homemaking budget was expected to cover. ▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the job-related expenditures of female household heads. Also examined were levels of education, occupations, presence of dependent children, employment benefits and reasons for working. A random sample of 75 female household heads was drawn from the 1973 Polk's Corvallis City Directory. The sample was composed of 28 divorced, 3 separated, 15 single and 28 widowed women living in Corvallis, Oregon. The interviews were conducted during March and April of 1974. The median age for the 75 household heads was 51 years. They had completed a mean of 15 years of schooling. Single household heads were both younger, with a median age of 32, and had a higher level of education, 17 years, than widows and divorced women. Forty-nine percent of the female household heads were professional workers; 39 percent were clerical and sales workers; and the remaining 12 percent were semiskilled workers. Eighty percent of the single household heads were employed in professional occupations, compared with 45 percent of the widows and 38 percent of the divorced and separated women. Median employment income for all 75 household heads was 7, 249. For the 68 women who had worked the entire year, the median employment income was 7, 500 and the mean, 8, 162. Hypothesis 1. Hypothesis 1, there is no relationship between level of education of the female household head and amount of earnings, was not supported by the data and it was rejected. As the level of education increased, the employment income also increased. Household heads who had not completed high school were employed in the lowest-paying occupations. Full-time workers who were college graduates earned 52 percent more than high school graduates and 14 percent more than household heads with some college education. Household heads who had master's degrees earned 36 percent more than college graduates. Household heads with doctoral degrees earned 28 percent more than those with master's degrees. Hypothesis 2. Hypothesis 2, between 40 and 50 percent of the employed female household heads' income from gainful employment was absorbed by job-related expenditures, was not supported by the data. There was a significant difference at the .01 level and the hypothesis was rejected. Female household heads in the study reported 35.8 percent of their cash employment income was used for job-related expenditures or a mean of 2, 930. Payroll deductions absorbed the highest percentage of employment income, 26.5 percent or a mean of 2, 164. Federal income taxes were the highest reported expense, 13.7 percent, with a mean of 1, 122 and a range of 1. 15 to 4, 441. Directly-related expenses were reported as 5.2 percent of the employment income. Education related to the job and transportation were the highest directly-related expenses, 1.5 and 1.6 percent, respectively. ▼ This study was designed to identify young homemakers' management problems and to see if limitations of selected resources caused problems. Sources used for current homemaking information were also explored. The sample was composed of 50 married homemakers, age 30 or under, who were living with their husbands. Homemakers were randomly selected from a newsletter mailing list. Thirty of the homemakers were classified as full-time homemakers. Twelve were employed full-time and six on a part-time basis. Only two were currently enrolled as students taking credit courses. Their average age was 26 years and they had completed a mean of 14 years of education. All but seven had families ranging from one to four children. The family mean income was $10,500. All 17 tasks studied were carried out most often on a regular or sometimes basis by the homemakers. Tasks included: meal preparation, dishwashing, packing lunches, special food preparation, food preservation, regular house care, special house care, upkeep of the home, washing, ironing, sewing and mending, physical care of adults, physical care of children, financial planning, record keeping, marketing for food and marketing for clothing. Homemakers rated tasks on a scale ranging from very simple to very complex. Upkeep of the home was listed as most complex while dishwashing was named the least complex task. Hypothesis 1. Hypothesis 1, management problems of young homemakers will not differ with respect to: length of marriage, age, type of housing, place of residence, homemakers' education, homemakers' occupation, composition of family and income, was accepted since there was no indication of relationship at the 0.10 level of signficance between management problems expressed and the demographic variables. If tasks were complex, homemakers were asked if one or more of six resource limitations including: money, time, knowledge, equipment, energy or space caused the complexity. Chi-square tests indicated that resources were unevenly distributed among the tasks. Limitations causing the most difficulty were time followed by money and knowledge. Resource limitations were unevenly distributed for special food preparation, financial planning, record keeping, marketing for food, marketing for clothing and special house care at the 0.005 significance level. Limitations were unevenly distributed at the 0.01 signficance level for ironing, the 0.05 significance level for food preservation and 0.10 significance level for upkeep of the home. Hypothesis Z. Hypothesis 2, there will be no relationship between the expressed problem areas and the limitations of resources of time, money, knowledge, equipment, energy or space, was rejected for the tasks mentioned above due to the uneven distribution at the stated signficance levels. ▼ Many organisations, locally and internationally, have placed huge importance on involving accountants in business related decision. In South Africa, particularly organisations in the motor industry, have not recognised the significance of using management accounting to support the strategic management process. Many of these organisations have not allowed accountants to be involved in the strategic issues of the business. This may lead to poor financial performances due to miscalculated business decisions being made without using well analysed financial information collected and analysed by accountants. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of management accounting on strategic decisions.The study was qualitative and data was collected by means of interviews. An interview schedule was the research tool of choice used to collect data. Participants were invited using a non probability method of purposive sampling. Participants were selected from dealership around Pinetown and Durban representing the general motors franchises as well as Audi, Toyota and Mazda. The findings of this study are based on 14 interviews held with accountants and other finance professionals working in the motor industry. The findings of the study indicated that accountants and other finance personnel’s efforts add value to the strategic management process of the business. The techniques used to aide strategic management are not sophisticated and vary from one organisation another. The involvement of accountants in the strategic process was influenced by several factors such as a range of qualities possessed by the accountant, organisational factors, as well as systematic factors that allow the accountants to perform their roles. The study further looked at the terms being used by finance professionals in the motor industry as they carry out their roles. Business issues emerged as a term that was used and best described how accountants got involved in strategic management process. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that dealership accountants make an effort to engage with other managers on issues of strategy. It was also recommended that accountants would need to possess good interpersonal skills, as they are as important as technical skills, in order for them to be able to contribute significantly to the organisation’s success. ▼ The marked disintegration of the UK banking system in 2008 led to significant Government ownership in two major banks: The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) (National Audit Office, 2009). The banks are termed ‘quasi-nationalised’ due to the retention of stock exchange listings alongside Government ownership The thesis offers a documentary analysis on the public accountability of these banks. The research themes are: - The impact of Government intervention on the accountability of the quasi-nationalised banks - The banking crisis through the lens of financial reporting for RBS and LBG - Newspaper reporting of the banking crisis in RBS and LBG A multiple theory framework is utilised in the study. Property rights (Alchian, 1974; Alchian and Demsetz, 1973; Demsetz, 1967) and agency theory (Fama, 1980; Jensen and Meckling, 1976) explore the implications of Government Intervention. Impression Management and Stigma (Goffman, 1968; Goffman, 1956a) are used to critique financial reporting since the crisis. Critical Discourse Analysis assesses newspaper reporting of the banks’ finances (Fairclough, 2010; Fairclough, 1995). Summary findings for the three research themes are as follows. Quasi-nationalisation has been a positive response to the banking crisis. Banks acknowledge they must consider societal responsibilities as well as corporate profits. Yet the increased accountability mechanisms have been difficult to define and enforce. Property rights theory applauds the retention of private sector scrutiny. Agency theory, however, identifies the muted disciplinary effects of the markets in the circumstances. The banks’ financial reporting gives an alternative perspective on the banking crisis. Both banks acknowledge their role in the crisis but simultaneously distance themselves from it. RBS highlights the virtues of a ‘new’ bank different from the failed one. LBG explains poor results through ‘market dislocation’. The statutory accounts themselves are relegated in favour of managerially defined pro forma numbers and promotional materials. In this way, the statutory numbers can be seen as part of the ‘dirty work’ (Goffman, 1956b) of the crisis. Using critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 2010; Fairclough, 1995), findings are that newspaper reporting of the banks’ accounting results occurs across a broad spectrum of titles and articles. Headlines favour big numbers for impact. But constant focus on banking pay endures. The accounts provide an important counterpoint to the news context of the banks. Positively, accounting is portrayed as a neutral challenger to the public relations news process and fulfils democratic accountability. Critically, however, it is in the interests of papers to create and sustain media panics (Leach, 2006). ▼ Given the backdrop of inefficiencies and declining productivity in the South African sugar industry, this study examined material flow cost accounting (MFCA) as a decision-making toolkit for improving resource efficiency in the industry. This was considered with three distinct objectives, namely: to establish which factors determine the quality of sucrose in sugarcane production; to demonstrate the potential environmental and economic benefits of cleaner production processes and technologies in the sugar milling industry, and to examine the effectiveness of adopting the MFCA framework approach as a decision-making tool in the supply chain to improve overall performance of the sugar industry. Data were collected from a panel of the six sugar milling firms that are operating in the South African sugar milling industry. For the first and second objectives, the panel auto regressive distributive lag (P-ARDL) estimating technique was adopted while models from literature were employed to access the efficiency of the implementation of MFCA as an important alternative to the conventional accounting process in the third objective. A system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation technique was also used to estimate the impact of sucrose content on profitability. As well, a random effect regression model was employed to examine the relationship between material flow cost accounting and resource efficiency. Besides the aforementioned methods, detailed conceptual issues relating to cleaner production were identified and addressed. Taking the sugar cane industry in South Africa as the study focus, an alternative measure that enhances the quality of sugar, particularly that of sucrose, was investigated. Findings from the study revealed that certain factors, such as transportation and loading delay, not only contribute to losses in sucrose, but also affect the farmers’ yields due to increase in deterioration of cane sugar. Specifically, the result of objective one revealed that, both in the short- and long- runs, most of the variables investigated have the tendency of increasing the sucrose level in sugar cane while an increase in other variables would decrease sucrose level altogether. However, the impact of soil water content (100mm) appears not to be statistically significant on sucrose production in the short- and long-runs. Of special interest is stalk growth (of sugar cane) and average temperature, as their values are more significantly germane as regards to the quantity of sucrose obtained for sugar cane processing in South Africa. The study further used a structural equation model to examine the relationship between cleaner production and firm performance, which was measured by environmental, operational and financial performance. The hypothesis tested supported that cleaner production had a positive and vi significant influence on the environmental, operational and financial performance of the firms in the sugar industry.
