▼ Play can be seen as a very important component in the learning programme of pre-school children. The question arises whether the Gr R teacher has adequate play incorporated into the daily schedule? The research question was answered as follows. Although it was revealed in the study that the teachers who had pre-primary and Bed qualifications, possessed more (play) knowledge of all the teachers, the rest of the Gr R teachers indicated that they did have a need to gather more knowledge in childrens’ play, as well as implementing it into the day programme. The third part of the research question was also answered namely; that too much formal education were taking place in the Gr R classes in primary schools. The answer to the question; whether there is enough play in the Gr R class in a primary school is; “no”, 10 and whether there is enough play in the Gr R class in the pre-primary school is; “yes”. It was concluded that the Gr R education methods in the primary school is far more formal than that of the pre-primary school. The research question is thus fully answered and the study was completed successfully.; Spel kan gesien word as ’n baie belangrike komponent van die leerprogram vir voorskoolse kinders. Die vraag ontstaan of Gr R onderwyseresse genoegsame spel in die dagprogram implementeer? Die navorsingsvraag is as volg beantwoord. Alhoewel dit in die studie na vore gekom het, dat die onderwyseresse wat preprimêr en BEd gekwalifiseer is oor die meeste speelkennis beskik, het die meeste Gr R onderwyseresse aangedui dat hul wel ’n behoefte het om meer kennis rakende kinderspel en die implementering daarvan in die dagprogram te bekom. Die laaste vraag voortvloeiend uit die navorsing of daar genoegsame spel in die Gr R klasse plaasvind was die gevolgtrekking “nee” by primêre skole en “ja” by preprimêre skole. Daar is tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat Gr R onderwys by primêre skole se onderrigmetodes baie meer formeel is as Gr R by preprimêre skole. ▼ The present situation in South Africa is that the study of the science of pedagogy is mainly based on the phenomenological approach. In this method of reduction the scientist is enabled to get to the essences of the phenomenon of "education". This method has gradually become a system or a philosophy of education based on phenomenology. The system, iniated by Husserl, was adopted by the dutch philosophers Langeveld and Perquin and embrace9 in their philosophy of education. Their writings on this subject became very popular and were taken over by the South African educationists Oberholzer, Gunter, Landman, Van Zyl and others. These people established a philosophy of education for South Africa almost similar to the dutch system, but they went further and declared that the phenomenological method is the one and only method for the study of the science of education, this is the sole method, they maintain, by which a scientific study could be made and by which an unbiased, neutral conception of this science could ever be obtained. Thus they have absolutized phenomenology as a method and a philosophy and have excluded all other approaches as being unscientific, biased and even tarnished with some unscientific pre-conception. These phenomenologists maintain that it is essential to advance from the phenomenon of education and to investigate this phenomen without any prejudice or preconceived principles as these prejudices or principles or conceptions or beliefs are injurious to the pure science which education should be. Such a preconceived principle or attitude could be a christian outlook on life and such like conceptions. These principles would have been in order had they remained pre-scientific or post-scientific but they should not be taken in account when the pure phenomen "education" as such is studied. All these pre-conceived ideas, religions, conceptions have to be bracketed before any such scientific study could be undertaken. It is further maintained these e that the result arrived at under these conditions is "a universally acceptable and scientific result" on which e of any creed or denomination could be unanimous as it is then a neutral conclusion. This neutral approach implies that the is taken and reduced to its essences or irreducible components which are then the originally given or "fait primitif” which has the intrinsic ability to declare itself to the investigator or "education scientist". The investigator must only listen to this essence which then is active while the "scientist" is the passive medium through which these essences disclose themselves. As pointed out before the personal beliefs, disbeliefs, convictions, etc. must under no account be brought into play while this "scientific scrutiny and the resultant disclosure by the essences" take place. The interpreter and his action of reduction are left out of account and it is only the "knowable" as such that declares itself to the investigator. ▼ The aim of this study is to indicate, analyse and describe, by means of theoretical principles, the close connection between man's philosophy of life and the educational system which is often postulated by educationalists. The research was conducted in the form of a literature study. In this way different aspects in the field of research were highlighted. In contrast with scientists who maintain the so-called autonomy of theoretical thought as a basic starting point, the explicit point of view taken here was that the Bible should be the guideline for all human action, this necessarily includes all scientific activity. The philosophical "model of reality" which was used was that of the Philosophy of the Cosmonomic Idea. The use of this structure of reality was, however, subject to the view that not all conclusions to which the various followers of this school of thought arrived at, were acceptable. This research revealed that the basic motive in both education and the educational system is always of a religious nature. By "religious" is meant that man's inclination is always towards that to which he is most deeply attached in the depths of his being. In the educational situation it has been shown that human attitudes and beliefs vary greatly from person to person. This difference is the result of the Fall - since the Fall the heart of man is inclined either towards God or idolatrously towards something in the cosmos. From the subsequent analysis of identity and modal structures in education, and the educational system, it became abundantly clear that these structures are particularised by the religious motive. It was found that the central principle of a philosophy of life is also of a religious nature. This makes it evident to conclude that man's philosophy of life is the guiding force of his life. It directs all his activities and consequently also his educational work and the educational system designed by him. From this analysis it was concluded that man's philosophy of life which is always religiously determined is the first and most primary principle of the educational system and therefore forms the basis for differentiation in the educational system one which takes precedence over and forms the basis of all other principles of differentiation in the educational system.

▼ Education and schooling have been under severe and constant attack on all sides since the Russians launched Sputnik in 1957. It is today a platitude or a reality of educational thought to say that the school as a social institution is in a state of deep crisis. In the relevant literature there is a great amount of data available which support the contention that the schools are in trouble. The increasing number of private and free schools is also indicative of the extent to which the modern school is beset with problems. A survey of the literature on the crisis of the school revealed several topical problems which underlined the necessity for undertaking this study. First of all, what the critics accuse the school of varies widely. It was, therefore, necessary in this study to outline some fundamental problems of the school. Secondly, the modern school remains in trouble in spite of the fact that the calls to reform the school situation have been met by many positive suggestions. Therefore, this study needed to explore the reasons why criticism of the school has failed to solve the problems of the school. Thirdly, there appeared on the scene in the past decade or so some extremely radical critics of the school whereas the school and its particular role fulfilment in society have so far only been accepted uncritically in Christian-reformational circles. The socalled "deschooling" philosophy therefore had to be viewed from a Scriptural perspective. Lastly, an investigation into the reasons why schools today pass through such a bombardment of criticism had to be made from a Scriptural perspective. This study attempted to achieve a threefold over-all aim: firstly, it tried to profile and analyse the main or fundamental problems or the crisis of the school; secondly, it tried to evaluate these problems or crisis of the school fundamental-educationally; and thirdly, it tried to find a Christian solution to the crisis of the school from a Scriptural perspective, in the process attempting to make a contribution to a radically Christian science of education and theory of the school. The research method employed in this research is characteristic of fundamental educational inquiry. The method applied to this study is, therefore, based mainly on documentary analysis. The problem-historical method and the method of philosophical reflection were also used in this study. Furthermore, various views of the school, school criticisms, reforming ideas as well as alternative ideas to the present schooling are criticized and evaluated in this study by way of immanent, transcendental, and exheretical critical methods. Above all else, this study is guide by the principle of sola Scriptura. In order to see and understand properly the present-day fundamental crisis of the school, attention was, firstly, given to a brief historical review of the development of the school, and also to some of the problems which the school has faced from primitive times up to the end of the 19th century. THE PROBLEM INVESTIGATED - In the course of the past decade it has become clear that the ever-increasing tempo of scientific and technological development has increasingly placed the stress to a larger extent on proper training, and the implementation of especially high-level manpower. Apart from formal education continuing education and in-service training and retraining have begun to receive attention universally from educational authorities. It is also a fact that the practitioner of a profession periodically has to receive continuing education and training in order * to attain specialised knowledge in his own field; * to keep up with recent developments in his field; and * to get help with new adjustments and challenges posed by the profession he is in. Apart from continuing education to the professional practitioner, provision also has to be made for supportive programmes, provision for ad hoc needs for knowledge about specific issues, the identification of individuals who either did not enter into the sphere of formal education or who left it early, and the fulfilment of knowledge about recreational activities. With regard to continuing education the following might be stated axiomatically: * education and training are continuing activities; * in both developed and developing countries lifelong learning should receive the highest priority rating in all educational planning, and * in the RSA the need for continuing education was stressed by two recent government reports, viz. Provision of Education in the RSA (HSRC Report), 1981, and Report of the National Manpower Commission on High Level Manpower in the RSA, 1980. The problem to be investigated was thus: What task does the university have in the provision of continuing education and how can the university fulfil this task? In other words, it has to be determined what the task of the university, with its special structural nature, skills and facilities is with regard to the provision of continuing education, with its complex objectives, structure and idiosyncratic nature. 2. HYPOTHESES - The following research hypotheses were postulated: Main hypothesis The university with its skills encompassed in a large number of departments, bureaus and institutes, has, apart from its task of formal instruction of registered students, also the task of making a contribution in the provision of continuing education to practitioners of professions and the “general public”. Sub-hypothesis 1: The special nature of continuing education makes possible the effective participation of the university in this activity. Sub-hypothesis 2: The university, on the basis of its special structure, is particularly suited to make a contribution in the field of continuing education. This study will focus on determining whether each subsequent level of tertiary education causes an increase in the likelihood of earning a higher wage, by using a multinomial logistic regression model as well as cross-tabulation estimates. This study will also make use of two different data samples, where the first sample is sourced from the National Income Dynamics Study's, 2010-2011, adult wave 2 dataset, and the second sample is sourced from a questionnaire distributed to the North-West University's School of Economics alumni from the Potchefstroom campus. Literature indicates that there is a significant relationship between an individual's income and variables such as gender, age, marital status, population group, occupation, sector or industry, years of work experience, location of employment, tenure, union membership, and, most importantly, education. Determining the effect of these variables on the income of tertiary educated individuals, will assist current and future graduates by providing relevant South African labour market information as well as providing some assistance in decisions which may result in higher future earnings. From the NIDS data set, it was found that the level of tertiary education was significantly associated with income, and that higher levels of tertiary education were associated with higher income categories, while lower levels of tertiary education were associated with lower income categories. From the Alumni data set it was concluded that the level of tertiary education was not significantly associated with income, which could be the result of the graduation period (2009-2012) of the sample individuals. It was also found that married individuals were more likely to have earnings within the higher income categories, while the same result was obtained for males as well as for those individuals who were employed in the Gauteng province. It was also found that those individuals with an honours degree had earnings within the low income categories, similar to those individuals with a bachelor's degree. The main factors considered to influence the income of an individual with a tertiary qualification is gender, age, marital status, occupation, and the level of tertiary education.

▼ South West Africa is in many instances a unique land. Its topography, climatic conditions, rainfall and vegetation are all facets of extremes. As far as it could be established the three European groups, the three Coloured groups and the eight Black nations (except perhaps the Bushmen) have all inhabited the land within the period of one century and they were still in the process of settling down during the nineteenth century. Each group and nation brought with them their own habits, language, religion and culture. The history of formal education in South West Africa dates from 1805, after trading and hunting expeditions from South Africa, as well as crew members from foreign ships visited the country and reported their findings. Prior to that, the country was unknown to the outside world. After the report of these expeditions were received in the different countries, missionaries were sent to South West Africa by various societies. Initially the missionaries carne from the London, Rhenish, Finnish, Wesleyan and Roman Catholic Missionary Societies. Missionaries from other societies followed later. After arriving in South West Africa, the missionaries found the country to be vast and inhospitable, with the most severe and extreme climatic conditions. Several of the native tribes were at war against each other and some were hostile towards the missionaries. No school buildings, furniture or equipment was available and the missionaries had to contend with only the basic amenities. The missionaries' initial attempts at formal education consisted of the study of the Bible, reading, writing, handcrafts and general discipline. There were virtually no text books available for school use and the lack of funds further hampered the educational movement tremendously. The nomadic nature of the inhabitants of the country made the missionary effort none the easier and the missionaries had to move with the tribes from place to place in an endeavour to continue the education of the tribes. The face that the different tribes were constantly in a state of war against each other, regarding territorial occupation and cattle thieving, also hampered the missionaries efforts. Communication in the educational process proved to be a major problem for the missionaries. There were no less than nine different Black nations in the country, each with its own language. Although these nine nations were in most cases territorially separated, it often happened that when a school was established, two of three different languages had to be spoken at the school. The inability to communicate in the mother tongue of each group at these schools caused further problems in educating the people. Because the missionaries could not speak the languages of the Blacks, they resorted to teaching through the medium of Dutch, which was the language most commonly spoken by the Whites who entered the country. O interesse por substâncias antioxidantes aumentou consideravelmente nos últimos anos, pois moléculas que diminuem a peroxidação de lipídeos podem minimizar ou inibir os danos oxidativos causados ao DNA, proteínas e carboidratos. Os flavonóides, um grupo de metabólitos secundários, amplamente distribuídos no reino vegetal, apresentam propriedades antiinflamatórias, antibacterianas, antivirais, antialérgicas e antitumorais, além de possuírem propriedades antioxidantes sobre radicais livres de forma a inativá-los e a prevenir os danos oxidativos em nível celular. Acredita-se que a atividade biológica dos flavonóides seja devido às suas propriedades antioxidantes. Devido à grande importância dada atualmente aos radicais livres e antioxidantes, existe uma forte demanda por técnicas analíticas capazes de identificar e quantificar esses dois grupos de compostos. Este trabalho descreve o estudo do poder anti-radicalar dos flavonóides canferol, fisetina, quercetina, quercitrina, miricetina e rutina frente à radiação UV e ao radical HO. O método empregado baseou-se na geração fotoquímica artificial do radical HO pela fotodecomposição do H2O2. Os flavonóides estudados foram fotoestáveis frente à radiação UV e eficientes no combate ao radical HO. A quercitrina foi o flavonóide com maior ação anti-radicalar, seguida da rutina, canferol, fisetina, quercetina e miricetina. A metodologia proposta possibilita a comparação quantitativa da ação anti-radicalar de antioxidantes com base na cinética de reação das espécies com o radical HO. Da mesma forma, o estudo in vitro da interação entre radicais HO e extratos de plantas com caráter antioxidante pode ser realizado pelo método proposto.

The interest in antioxidants has increased considerably in recent years as molecules that reduce lipid peroxidation may minimize or inhibit the oxidative damage caused to DNA, proteins and carbohydrates. Flavonoids, a group of secondary metabolites widely distributed in the plant kingdom, have properties of anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-allergic and anti-tumor, in addition to possessing antioxidant and free radicals to inactivate them and prevent oxidative damage at cell level. It is believed that the biological activity of flavonoids is due to its antioxidant properties. Due to the great importance given today to free radicals and antioxidants, there is a strong demand for analytical techniques able to identify and quantify these two groups of compounds. This work describes the study of anti-radical power of the flavonoids kaempferol, fisetin, quercetin, quercitrin, myricetin and rutin against UV radiation and HO radical. The method used was based on artificial photochemical generation of HO radicals by photolysis of H2O2. The flavonoids studied were photpstable towards UV radiation and efficient in the fight against HO radical. La mise au point de médicaments ciblant la neuroinflammation, une composante importante de la physiopathologie des maladies neurodégénératives, fait l’objet de nombreuses recherches. Dans ce travail de thèse, nous avons étudié les effets de deux molécules potentiellement anti-inflammatoires et neuroprotectrices : l’hémine, un inducteur de l’hème oxygénase 1(HO-1) et ; le C16, un inhibiteur de la protéine kinase activée par l’ARN (PKR) dans un modèle de neuroinflammation in vivo par injection intrastriatale d’acide quinolinique (AQ) chez le rat. Nos résultats ont montré que l’induction de la HO-1 produit des effets délétères tandis que l’inhibition de la PKR induit des effets neuroprotecteurs et antiapoptotiques. Ce travail a par ailleurs permis de décrire l’évolution cinétique de la neuroinflammation sur 90 jours dans le modèle AQ, la capacité du tissu cérébral à se régénérer après la lésion et l’intérêt de ce modèle dans l’étude des effets d’agents neuroprotecteurs administrés au long cours.

Neuroinflammation is a key part of the physiopathology of neurodegenerative diseases and is an interesting target in their treatment. In this PhD work, we studied the effects of two potentially anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective molecules, hemin and C16, in an in vivo rat model of neuroinflammation by intrastriatal injection of quinolinic acid (QA). We showed that heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) induction by hemin has deleterious effects whereas inhibition of the protein kinase RNA activated (PKR) by C16 treatment induced neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. Concurrently, we evaluated longitudinal evolution of neuroinflammation in our model. ▼ The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and mental health within a cohort of black African teachers. A review of literature revealed that teachers frequently experience mental- and general health problems (e.g. Ngidi & Sibaya, 2002; Olivier & Venter, 2003; Johnson, Cooper, Cartwright, Donald, Taylor & Millet, 2005; Parker, Martin, Colmar, & Liem, 2012). However, very little could be found on personality traits and how this relates to the health and well-being of teachers, especially in the challenging South African context. This study forms part of the SABPA (Sympathetic Activity and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Africans) project conducted within AUTHeR (Africa Unit for Transdisciplinary Health Research). The overarching purpose of this multidisciplinary project was to investigate the markers of bio-psycho-social health in urbanized teachers. This longitudinal project ran from January 2008 to November 2012 and involved a total of 409 Black and White secondary school teachers. The research was conducted in the North West province of South-Africa. This study focused on the 200 urbanized Black teachers who were recruited by means of convenience sampling from the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda educational district in the Potchefstroom area in the North West province during 2008. The sample included 101 men and 99 women, ranging between the ages of 25 and 60 years. Ethical permission for the SABPA and FORT3 projects was obtained from the ethics committee of the North-West University (ethical clearance numbers NWU-00036-07-S6 and NWU-00002-07-A2 respectively). Participants filled out informed consent forms prior to data collection, and after the objectives of the study and the research procedures were explained to them, all their questions were answered. Data collection for the baseline phase of the project lasted for 50 days during February to May 2008. Four participants arrived at the North-West University (NWU) Metabolic Unit on the Potchefstroom campus after work each day. After being welcomed and oriented, a battery of psychometric tests was administered in English. A secondary analysis was performed on data obtained by means of the Basic Traits Inventory-Short, Mental Health Continuum-Short Form and the General Health Questionnaire-28 in order to determine the relationship between personality functioning and mental health of the participants. Results showed that this cohort of teachers from the North West province experience distress in the workplace, but that they also experience surprisingly high levels of mental health. The findings suggest that there are few differences between the male and female subgroups in this regard. The study also found that there is indeed a relationship between personality traits and the general- and mental health of participants. ▼ This study deals with retardation and a method that is concerned with the improvement of subjacent processes of observation. Retardation is seen as a form of perceptual deprivation. Remedial programmes with retarded people thus must correct perceptual deprivation. Audiopsychophonological auditor training (APF) is such a method. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of APF with a group of profoundly retarded children at the Witrand Care and Rehabilitation Centre. A secondary objective was to inquire into intervention as a contaminous factor. Three groups of experimental subjects were used in the research Ten subjects were allocated to each group. The groups respectively received - i) auditory training plus a sensory motor stimulation programme; ii) only music stimulation plus a sensory motor stimulation programme; and iii) no aimed stimulation. Ten experimental subjects listened to filtered Mozart music through head phones, whilst a second group of ten subjects listened to the same music, but unfiltered also through head phones. Both these groups received a sensory motor stimulation programme to keep intervention uniform between the two groups. No aimed stimulation whatsoever were directed at the third group. An increase in mental age (MA) was seen as the first criterium to ~valuate the influence of auditory training. The deferment in responses from self obsessed to object concerned behaviour was applied as a second criterium. Results indicated that the effect of intervention was minimal. It was also found that e significant greater increase of MA was detected in the group that received auditory training then in the group that had to listen to unfiltered music. No in; crease in mental age was detected with the group that received no stimulation at all. The group that received auditory training showed a deferment from self obsessed behaviour to object concerned behaviour. This change is associated with auditory training, of which the aim is to lead a person to active participation in the process of perception.

Depuis la Réforme économique en 1986, Hô Chi Minh-ville (HCMV) et particulièrement son centre (correspondant à l'ancienne Saigon) connaissent un boom de la construction, dans lequel les interventions du secteur privé jouent un rôle primordial. Or, Saigon, désormais partie de la métropole du Sud du Vietnam, possède un cadre bâti riche, formé par les modes de construction résultant d'une accumulation de cultures urbaines variées qui ont chacune laissé dans la ville leurs traces matérielles ; mais cet espace urbain complexe se trouve aujourd'hui mis en question par l'intense mouvement de construction que les institutions d'urbanisme vietnamiennes avec leurs outils (plans et projets d'urbanisme, documents législatifs et administratifs, programmes urbaines) semblent avoir peine à maîtriser. L'étude des mutations urbaines de cet espace à partir de leurs acteurs et vecteurs conduit cette recherche à une confrontation des outils d'urbanisme à leurs effets sur les transformations typo-morphologiques introduites par les initiatives privées dans le centre de HCMV, à travers l'histoire de sa construction urbaine depuis l'époque coloniale jusqu'à nos jours

Since the Economic Reform in 1986, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and its center (corresponding to the ancient Saigon) have in particular experienced a boom in construction, in which the private sector plays the key role. In addition, the city of Saigon, now part of the metropolis of south of Vietnam, has a rich urban structure formed by methods of construction which result from an accumulation of various urban cultures, each of them leaving material traces - a complex urban space now challenged by intense movement of construction which the Vietnamese planning institutions with their tools (plans and urban projects, legislative and administrative documents, urban programs) have not been effective in controlling. By studying the urban change of this space through its actors and vectors, this research leads us to a comparison of planning tools and their effects on the typo-morphological transformations introduced by private initiatives in the center of HCMC, through its history of urban construction since the colonial period until today

Abstract Introduction: Previous research showed that comorbidities that are common in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are anxiety and depression. Furthermore, stress can be associated with more depressive symptoms. Patients suffering from depression along with an additional medical condition, tend to have more severe symptoms in both depression and their medical illness. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate depression, anxiety, and stress among COPD patients, and also to examine if there was a difference in levels of depression, anxiety and stress between genders, and between COPD patients and patients with COPD together with comorbid chronic condition. Method: This study had a descriptive and cross-sectional design with a quantitative method. The data collection took place at a respiratory ward at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Sixty two COPD patients, both men and women, participated voluntarily by answering a questionnaire. Virginia Henderson´s nursing theory was used as a theoretical framework. Data analysis was conducted through using the statistical program SPSS. Result: More than half of the COPD patients (88.8%) presented symptoms of depression, 93.5% presented symptoms of anxiety, and 54.8% presented symptoms of stress. There was a statistical significance between genders among COPD patients in anxiety, where all female participants (100%) showed extremely severe levels of anxiety. In levels of extreme severity, both patients with only COPD diagnosis and patients with COPD and comorbid chronic condition presented symptoms in both depression and anxiety, but not in levels of stress. Conclusion: COPD patients in Ho Chi Minh City presented high levels of depression and anxiety. In addition, levels of stress were present, although not as high as depression and anxiety among this patient group. More information concerning psychological distress needs to be offered by healthcare professionals to COPD patients. Further research in this field is desirable.

Sammanfattning Introduktion: Tidigare forskning visar att depression och ångest är vanligt förekommande bland patienter med Kroniskt Obstruktiv Lungsjukdom (KOL). Stress kan associeras med flera depressiva symtom. Patienter som lider av depression tillsammans med annat mediciniskt tillstånd kan ha en tendens att utveckla svårare symptom i sin depression och sitt medicinska tillstånd. ▼ The problems of senior pupils of primary schools are of a twofold nature. Firstly, these pupils experience problems of a personality-educational nature and to a lesser extent, in the choice of a vocation, – as a result of the particular phase of life in which they find themselves. Secondly, these pupils experience problems as result of the important decisions which they must make with regard to the various study directions offered in secondary education. In this investigation an attempt has been made through the study of various literature (as well as on grounds of practical experience) to contribute towards finding a solution to the problems which pupils experience under the present system of school guidance. This has been achieved by making a study of education, guidance, the phase of development of the senior primary school pupil and of the system of differentiation in education. Attention has also been drawn to the present circumstances applicable to the counselling of senior primary school pupils. Finally, guidelines are presented and suggestions made in connection with an effective system of guidance at school. A study of education and guidance has shown that guidance cannot serve as a replacement for education. Rather, it serves as an extension of the total programme in education. The senior pupils of primary schools reveal physical, motoric, emotional, social-cognitive and religious characteristics, as well as factors in regard to interest and aptitude which can only be comprehended after a thorough study has been made of these pupils and the development phase in which they exist at a particular time. A study of the practice of school guidance in primary schools has revealed that prior to 1970 no organised system of guidance, in any of the provinces, was in existence. At present the various education authorities do realise the need for an organised system of guidance at schools, however, there is a lack of agreement amongst the authorities as to the composition of such a system. Guidelines are laid down and suggestions made in connection with an effective system of guidance for the senior pupils in primary schools. Aspects which have received attention are the responsibility of staff, the allocation of time for guidance, a proposed programme for a school guidance service as well as how pupils can be assisted towards making meaningful choices with regard to the different study directions offered in secondary education. Certain recommendations arising from this study, are put forward at the conclusion.

▼ I. A CONCEPT FORMULATION AND DESCRIPTION OF THE INVESTIGATION In the Christian school the teacher acts as a substitute for the natural parent of the child during school hours. With the parent he is co-responsible before God for the spiritual welfare of each child, although the parent can never get away from his baptismal vow. Substitute parentship gained new significance with the introduction of tutor teaching in Transvaal schools in 1963. Tutor teaching was introduced as the most important component in differentiated education. It supposes scientific individualised education where each child is observed as a person with particular needs, talents and gifts. In a changing world with its many pot-holes, misrepresentations, double standards, etc., not only the child but also the parent seeks solid values and norms. It appears that material prosperity resulted into selfishness and laziness of many people. The responsibility for the education of their children is easily shifted on to others, while mental achievements at the cost of level-headedness are seemingly •the most important aim of many parents. Under these circumstances tutor teaching is becoming more significant. In the primary school where the child receives his primary education, it is essential that each child is known as a whole so that both his possibilities and his limitations can be identified as early as possible, and that immediate attention can be given to them. But tutor education also demands meaningful and scientific conferences with the natural parents, so that parents can be enlightened and informed about their child on the one hand, but also to direct many parents on the other hand. The aim of this investigation is besides establishing the value and place of tutor teaching in the Afrikaans medium primary school in Transvaal, also to determine whether the system of tutor teaching can be used as an aid in national education and national exaltation, and to indicate direction in the light of findings. In this investigation the historical, empirical and questionnaire methods of scientific research have been used. B. HISTORICAL AND FUNDAMENTAL TEACHING AND THE GUIDANCE OF THE TUTOR AND GUIDANCE BY THE TRANSVAAL EDUCATION PLACEMENT OF TUTOR PROGRAMME (INTEGRATION SYSTEM) AS PRESCRIBED DEPARTMENT Since the earliest times parents were responsible for the education of their children. With the progress through the years this task became too comprehensive and schools became necessary to assist parents in the teaching of their children. Parents were not exempted from their educational and teaching responsibility as regards their children, but their task was only supplemented by the school. In the Transvaal the teacher has always acted as supplementary parent of the child during school hours. Supplementary parentship means to be guardian of the child. ▼ The aim of this investigation was to review the position of the formal and formative education of the blind in the RSA, to pay particular attention to crucial problems and, by means of a scientifically accountable interpretation and evaluation, to arrive at meaningful recommendations in respect of a system of education for blind pupils. As regards the situation in the RSA, various methods were employed to obtain information. Visits were paid to schools, questionnaires completed by school principals and members of the staff, and interviews conducted with experts in various fields. Questionnaires were also sent to schools for the blind in certain overseas countries and an intensive literature study was undertaken. Being blind implies particular limitations in comparison with the seeing person. The blind person's exploration of his world is hampered; he is deprived, to a certain extent, of his freedom as a person and limitations are imposed on his potential of self-determination; his fellow-man may deny his human dignity; his opportunities and possibilities for self-actualization are restricted, and his future perspective is blurred. Certain educational directives arise from these implications of being blind. These include the following: The necessity of differentiated formal and formative education; the preparation of the blind child for the reality of life among the seeing, but also acknowledgement of the blind person's potential and limitations; the advancement of the mobility of the blind; the necessity of the effective use of his remaining senses, and aid to the blind child in respect of social integration, use of leisure, orientation with regard to the opposite sex, and his creative self-realization. The NG Kerk has made a particular contribution towards the establishment of education for the blind in the RSA. Education for the blind has, in die main, remained centralized at the School for the Blind at Worcester because the number of blind pupils has never increased to such an extent to justify a fully fledged second school for White blind children. Schools for the visually handicapped (blind and partially sighted children) are government-aided. The task of the church control bodies of these schools is, strictly speaking, mainly of a advisory nature. The fact that financial assistance for expansion, additional staff and other educational services can be provided by the church control body offers the principals of these schools the opportunity to display personal initiative in order to eliminate educational problems. As in the case of the RSA, there are indications that there is no significant increase in the number of blind children in overseas countries, although the percentage of multihandicapped blind children is increasing. Whereas mentally handicapped blind children are in fact admitted to schools for the blind in the RSA, it is the tendency in some overseas countries to provide for those children in separate schools or institutions.
