Notre connaissance des mécanismes d’acquisition de la chimie des eaux continentales est limitée par la fréquence des prélèvements qui peuvent être réalisés sur le terrain. Échantillonner une rivière tous les 15 jours, c’est négliger une variabilité de sa composition qu’on commence à suspecter et qui renseigne sur des processus ou des variations de sources de courte période intégrés sur l’ensemble du bassin versant. L’automatisation des prélèvements et la mesure en temps réel est un défi important non seulement du point de vue de la compréhension des mécanismes contrôlant la chimie des eaux, de leur dynamique temporelle, des relations entre concentrations et débits, mais aussi du point de vue appliqué pour la détection des pollutions ponctuelles. Ce développement intéresse les professionnels de l’eau qui ne sont pas à ce jour contraint par la loi, mais qui pourraient le devenir. Dans le cadre du projet équipex CRITEX, un prototype de maison chimique appelé ”RiverLab”, véritable laboratoire d’analyses en temps réel sur le terrain a été développé et installé en novembre 2014 sur la bassin versant expérimental de l’Orgeval, un site étudié depuis 50 ans par les équipes de l’IRSTEA. Ce prototype est destiné à être déployé sur deux autres sites du réseau national des bassins versants (dispositif SOERE). Nous nous focalisons sur les deux principaux forçages naturels que subi un bassin versant à savoir les apports de précipitations et l’énergie solaire revisité sous l’angle de la haute fréquence

Our knowledge of the mechanisms of acquisition of inland water chemistry is limited by the frequency of sampling that can be carried out in the field. Sampling a river every 15 days means neglecting a variability in its composition that is beginning to be suspected and which informs processes or variations of short-term sources integrated over the entire catchment area. The automation of sampling and real-time measurement is an important challenge not only from the point of view of understanding the mechanisms controlling water chemistry, their temporal dynamics, the relations between concentrations and flows, but also from the point of view of applied for the detection of point pollution. This development is of interest to water professionals who are not yet legally constrained, but who could become so.As part of the CRITEX team project, a prototype of a chemical house called "RiverLab", a real laboratory for real-time field analysis, was developed and installed in November 2014 on the experimental watershed of Orgeval, a site studied for 50 years by the IRSTEA teams. This prototype is intended to be deployed on two other sites of the national watershed network (SOERE device). We focus on the two main natural forces that have undergone a watershed, namely precipitation inputs and solar energy revisited in terms of high frequency

▼ Spatial variation in the structure and function of bacterial communities is far more complex than previously believed. High throughput sequencing techniques have begun to elucidate the dynamic worldwide patterns of bacterial biogeography; however, there are still many ecosystems for which there is little to no representative data. Currently there are no high throughput-based analyses of bacterial assemblages in large rivers. Rivers form important connections between terrestrial land use and marine biogeochemistry and act as conduits for organisms and allochthonous nutrients. Bacteria dominate carbon cycling and nutrient processing in rivers, and therefore can influence regional and global elemental cycles. This study characterized the structure of bacterial assemblages of the major tributaries to the lower Mississippi River using high throughput ion torrent pgm sequencing of the 16s rrna gene, and the function of these communities using assays of extracellular enzyme activity. A total of 715,120 valid bacterial 16s rrna sequences were classified into 30,211 operational taxonomic units (otus), although many of these otus were of very low proportional abundance. The most abundant individual otu was identified as being related to the dominant marine alphaproteobacteria pelagibacter/sar11 and was found in all rivers. The most abundant bacterial phylum was the cyanobacteria, of which a number of genetically distinct otus were identified as being similar to prochlorococcus. Community structure was related to river physiochemistry, although there was no consistent physicochemical factor responsible for these differences. While there were different bacterial communities in each river, the greatest difference in assemblage structure was between free living cells and those associated with particles. Despite having different environmental characteristics and distinct bacterioplankton communities, there were no consistent differences in enzyme activity between rivers, although aspects of community structure could be linked to extracellular enzyme activity. Overall, this research shows that large rivers of the Mississippi River basin harbor distinct bacterioplankton communities but also suggests that these structurally different bacterial assemblages may show similar ecological functions related to nutrient acquisition and organic carbon mineralization. ▼ The Taranaki headland protrudes into a high energy wave climate system with a potential for strong littoral transport. This shoreline is typically comprised of a narrow cobble to boulder reflective beach, surmounting a rugged wave cut shore platform which is carved into lahar deposits from the nearby andesitic composite cone of Mount Taranaki. Historically along this coast, pocket sandy beaches have endured within embayments and adjacent to headland features; otherwise the the Taranaki littoral system is sand-starved. In 1998, persistent heavy rainfall resulted in the collapse of scoriaceous sand and gravel on the side of Mount Taranaki, leading to massive injection of sand and gravel directly into the Stony River, from which the adjacent coastal shoreline has experienced a continuous flux of dense 'black' titanomagnetite-rich volcanic sands. These sediments are rapidly transported to the north-east by the energetic wave climate, creating sandy beaches on what is normally a rocky boulder coast. Coastline changes between Cape Egmont and New Plymouth were analysed by the comparison of aerial photographs dated 1995, 2001, and 2007. These photos illustrated a marked increase in sandy sediment in 2001 which has diminished rapidly by 2007. Sub-aerial beach profiles were undertaken, over the duration of this study, at 12 locations between Komene Road, just south of the Stony River mouth, and Back Beach in New Plymouth. The beaches including and south of Ahuahu Beach are characterised by dunes which reach greater elevations than those further north where the dune elevation decreases. This evidence along with visual observations suggest that the sediment derived from the Stony River sits on the upper beach forming a berm and high dunes. Sediment textural analysis was conducted on samples collected at the 12 beach profiling locations. This analysis was undertaken every three months over the course of this study and showed (1) a decrease in mean grain size with distance north of the Stony River mouth; and (2) sorting generally improves with distance north-east in the direction of the dominant littoral drift. Mineralogical analysis illustrated that beach sediments are dominated by the heavy mineral titanomagnetite and the opaque minerals of augite, hornblende and plagioclase feldspar. The longshore sediment transport flux between Rahotu Road, south of Cape Egmont) and Back Beach in New Plymouth was examined. Wave climate parameters were generated at 55 locations between 1998 and 2007 using the SWAN third generation numerical model. The CERC (1973) formula was used to calculate the potential longshore sediment transport flux, at each of these locations using the significant wave height and angle of incidence. Com vistas a contribuir com o debate sobre a produção de hidroenergia de forma sustentável, o que significaria o meio ambiente conservado e as comunidades beneficiadas de modo proporcional à exploração dos recursos, propôs-se este trabalho. Com embasamento em conceitos das Geociências, pretende-se desconsiderar a dicotomia teórica entre Geografia Física versus Geografia Humana, apropriando-se do mais adequado de cada uma delas. Primeiramente faz-se a Introdução ao Trabalho, identificando metodologia e referencial utilizado. Em seguida a caracterização física, biótica e socioeconômica da área de estudo, a análise dos procedimentos de prospecção, licenciamento e construção dos empreendimentos para, com isto, perceber os reflexos da implantação de PCHs numa mesma Sub-Bacia Hidrográfica. O estudo se deu na região conhecida por Alto Vale do Rio Tijucas (segundo denominação adotada pelo Comitê de Bacia do Rio Tijucas), abrangendo os municípios de Rancho Queimado, Angelina, Leoberto Leal e Major Gercino e mais especificamente no entorno dos tributários onde se localizam empreendimentos hidroenergéticos de pequeno porte (PCHs). Foram utilizadas ferramentas geográficas (fotointerpretação e geoprocessamento), modelos de matriz de impacto ambiental e entrevistas com os agentes sociais envolvidos. O trabalho divide-se em seis partes, a saber: Introdução; Caracterização da Região de Estudo; Análise das Construções das PCHs; Utilização de Geo-Ferramentas; Considerações Finais; e Bibliografia

This work was conceived in order to offer a contribution to the debate over the sustainable hydro energy, which means to have a preserved environment and communities benefited in a proportional basis to the natural resources exploration. Based on Geosciences concepts, its intention is to refuse the theoretical duality between Physical Geography and Human Geography, trying to get the very best of each of them. At first, it is presented the Work Introduction, that explains the chosen methodology and references used by the author. After that there is the physical, biotic, social and economic study specific areas characterization, the analysis of the prospection procedures, the environmental permit and construction of engineering projects in order to make possible the perception and evaluation of the impact of the PCHs (pequenas centrais hidrelétricas small plants hydroelectric) construction in one same hydrographic sub-basin. The study will be developed in a Santa Catarina State region known as Alto Vale do Rio Tijucas (according to the denomination adopted by the Comitê da Bacia do Rio Tijucas Tijucas River Basin Committee). This mentioned region covers the territory where are located the cities of Rancho Queimado, Angelina, Leoberto Leal e Major Gercino, and more specifically the tributary rivers surroundings areas where the SPHs were erected. ▼ No final dos anos noventa do século XX, foi empreendido na região do Alentejo, no vale do rio Guadiana, um importante programa de minimização dos impactes sobre o património arqueológico resultantes da construção da barragem de Alqueva, nomeadamente na área do seu extenso regolfo, com o objectivo de realizar o registo prévio dos contextos de algumas centenas de sítios. Foram efectuadas intervenções num conjunto muito significativo de ocorrências arqueológicas situadas em meio rural que revelaram contextos raramente intervencionados no âmbito da investigação arqueológica tradicional, nomeadamente do período de transição entre a Antiguidade Tardia e a Alta Idade Média. O território em estudo foi assim administrativamente delimitado pelos actuais municípios ribeirinhos portugueses do regolfo de Alqueva, tendo, para além dos dados arqueológicos resultantes do programa de minimização, sido recolhida informação arqueológica georreferenciada dos sítios constantes no Endovélico, Sistema de Informação e Gestão Arqueológica, bem como a constante nos relatórios e nas monografias dos trabalhos entretanto publicadas. A questão fundamental da investigação do povoamento rural prende-se com a escassez de dados existentes e com a ampla diacronia dos mesmos. Na quase ausência de fontes escritas e de outra documentação, verifica-se a necessidade de procurar obter, através dos dados arqueológicos, informação que permita a percepção da sua evolução. O modelo teórico de abordagem seguido pressupõe que, apesar das alterações conjunturais, houve uma continuidade cultural de matriz mediterrânica, com particularidades regionais nos padrões de assentamento rural desde o Período Romano, baseada numa estrutura de povoamento hierarquizado, expressa sobretudo em villae, pequenas granjas ou casais agrícolas. Esta dissertação constitui uma reflexão preliminar sobre o conhecimento Tukano da relação entre humano e não-humano para além de narrativas míticas. Seu foco está na diferenciação entre as categorias de wai-mahsã (humanos invisíveis) e wai (peixe). Os waímahsã são seres humanos que habitam nos domínios da terra, floresta, ar e água. Eles detêm a capacidade de metamorfose e camuflagem, assumindo (vestindo a roupa) a forma de animais e peixes e adquirindo suas características e habilidades físicas. São também a fonte de conhecimento, aqueles com os quais os especialistas tukano (yai, kumu e baya) devem se comunicar e aprender, acessando neles seus conhecimentos. A categoria de wai (peixe), ao contrário de algumas conclusões antropológicas, não possui atributos antropocêntricos, isto é, não tem status de gentes ou pessoas. Para os Tukano, os peixes nunca tiveram, nem mesmo em sua origem mítica, condição humana. Pelo contrário, como veremos, sua gênese está quase sempre relacionada ao que é descartado: restos de madeira, objetos e ornamentos abandonados pelos wai-mahsã, as partes descartadas e podres do corpo humano etc. Esta dissertação é ainda uma tentativa de desfazer a confusão feita entre os conceitos de wai-mahsã e wai.

This dissertation is a preliminary reflection on Tukanoan knowledge about the relationship between human and non human, beyond the mythic narratives. It is focused on the distinction between the categories of wai-mahsã (invisible humans) and wai (fish). The wai-mahsãare human beings dwelling the domains of earth, forest, air and water. They have got the faculty of metamorphosis and camouflage, assuming (dressing) the form of animals and fishes, and acquiring their traits and physical skills. They are also the source of knowledge: Tukanoan specialists (yai, kumu and baya) must communicate with them, and from them they get their knowledge. The category of wai (fish), unlike some anthropological conclusions, does not have anthropocentric attributes, in other words, it does not have the status of people. For Tukanoan, fishes never had a human condition, even in their mythic origin. Contrariwise, their genesis is often related to discarded things: wood debris, objects and ornaments dismissed by waimahsã, discarded and rotten parts of human body, etc. This dissertation is also an attempt to undo the misunderstanding between the concepts of wai-mahsã and wai.

No extremo sudoeste da Bacia de Taubaté, caminhando para o seu limite atual com a Bacia de São Paulo, ocorre a separação das bacias dos rios Paraíba e Tietê, configurando um alto chamado Soleira de Arujá. Nessa região, as estruturas antigas exercem controle na morfologia do alto que separa as bacias sedimentares de São Paulo e Taubaté, estrutura esta que forçou o Rio Paraíba do Sul a inverter o seu curso, formando assim o denominado Cotovelo de Guararema. O presente estudo objetiva delinear a evolução geológica e geomorfológica desta área em tempos cenozóicos e avaliar a possibilidade de que processos neotectônicos estejam ainda ativos. A abordagem utilizada compreendeu a análise de dados geológicos e geomorfológicos compilados, a aplicação de análise de parâmetros flúviomorfométricos (perfis longitudinais e índices RDE Relação Declividade vs. Extensão), a interpretação de imagens de satélite e trabalhos de campo. O conjunto de informações obtidas evidencia uma série de anomalias flúvio-morfométricas, concentradas nas proximidades do atual divisor de águas das bacias hidrográficas do Tietê e do Paraíba do Sul, interpretadas como decorrência de ação neotectônica. A compilação de dados geológicos permitiu evidenciar que as bacias sedimentares de Taubaté e São Paulo formaram-se no Paleógeno, com o preenchimento de calhas alongadas na direção ENE-WSW, constituindo uma única entidade bacinal. A partir do Mioceno, quando o regime tectônico passa a ser compressivo, configurando a Neotectônica, houve fragmentação dos depósitos paleógenos, em especial na região na região de Arujá, condicionando uma mudança brusca no curso do rio Paraíba do Sul – que outrora tributava suas águas no rio Tietê , invertendo o seu curso para noroeste e, na seqüência, para nordeste, configurando o chamado Cotovelo de Guararema. Análise de imagens de satélite possibilita visualizar as áreas subsidentes (com depósitos aluviais mais expressivos, regolitos mais bem preservados, e preservação de sedimentos paleógenos, acrescidos da sedimentação neogênica) e as áreas em processo de soerguimento (mais dissecadas, com solos rasos) e até mesmo basculamentos, controlados, principalmente por famílias de lineamentos ENE-WSW e NNW-SSE, a primeira delas coincidente com a direção das principais zonas de x cisalhamento do substrato pré-cambriano. Acredita-se que os resultados do presente trabalho possam contribuir para o entendimento do quadro neotectônico da Região Sudeste, bem como dos processos morfogenéticos, de sedimentação, de dinâmica superficial e de sismicidade natural ou induzida. Recomenda-se a continuidade de investigações sobre a Neotectônica, justificáveis pelo fato dessa região compreender uma das mais importantes regiões do País em termos populacionais e socioeconômicos.

▼ “Safety is an opportunity for people to open their minds” -Jin Baek, 2008 For my thesis I will design an education facility. That education facility will strive to meet with today's security needs and will provide a safe-feeling place for growth. In identifying the problem, I found two main causes for the described conditions in today's schools. They are improper adaptation and uniform building type. Improper adaptation has to do with surface applications, rather than integrating with the social fabric of the school's communal requirements. Unfortunate incidents have caused the solutions to heightened security around schools to be fortressing and disrupting to the human activities. Metal detectors, restricted areas and alarmed doors are some of the possibly necessary but often overlooked attributes of the school design, which in concentration create a trapping, prison-like feeling where they should suggest a place of voluntary education and inspiration for the future. I will utilize CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) strategies, research codes, new building technologies, materials, systems, arrangements, precedent studies, and testing through simulation or experiment, in a form of installation. I can determine possible solutions and interventions using these resources. Uniform building type sets a counterproductive precedent. Today we must look at places were young people want to be, and splice the desired attributes of those places in to modern schools. In fact, uniform building type is one of the reasons for improper adaptation. Through interviewing school administrators, building officials, students, faculty, psychologists, builders and other construction professionals, I can identify the mandatory requirements. Implementing security and safety attributes as part of the concept, and knowing trends in technology can help secure educational facilities while still maintaining the qualities that are conducive to a learning environment. As stated by Holly Richmond in Contract magazine, February 2006 edition, "Students are the most crucial design element in today's schools," says Kerry Leonard, principal and senior planner at O'Donnell, Wicklund, Pigozzi and Peterson Architects in Chicago and chair of the advisory group for the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education. "Understanding how people learn and creating environments that respond to this knowledge is the best building block to start from."

▼ A comprehensive hydrological study of large watersheds in Africa e.g. the Congo basin and the Nile basin has not been vigorously pursued for various reasons. One of the major reasons is the lack of adequate modeling tools that would not be very demanding in terms of input data needs and yet inclusive enough to cover such wide extents (over 3 million square kilometers for the Congo basin). Using a coupled run of the Community Atmospheric model (CAM3) and Community Land Model (CLM3) components of the Community Climate System of Models (CCSM), this study looks into the spatial and temporal variation of precipitation and river runoff in the Congo basin in the light of increasing trends in deforestation of the tropical forests. The effect of deforestation on precipitation and runoff is investigated by changing the land cover-type from the current configuration of broadleaf evergreen/deciduous, non-Artic grass and corn to a mostly grass type of vegetation. Discharge simulation for the river Congo is centered at the point of entrance to the Atlantic Ocean. Although the CLM3 does not presently simulate the observed river runoff to within at least one standard deviation it gives an opportunity to iteratively improve on the land surface parameterization with a possibility of future accurate prediction of mean monthly river runoffs under varying climate scenarios and land use practices. When forced with the National Center for Environment and Prediction (NCEP) re-analysis data the CLM3 runoff simulation results are relatively more stable and much closer to the observed. An improved CLM3 when coupled to CAM3 or other Global Climate Models is definitely a better tool for investigative studies on the regional hydrological cycle in comparison to the traditional methods. There was a slight reduction in rainfall in the first experiment which mimicked a severe form of deforestation and a slight increase in rainfall following low level of deforestation. These changes in rainfall were however statistically insignificant when compared to the control simulation. There was notable heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of the changes in rainfall following deforestation. Les sources d’émissions de polluants organiques persistants (POP) dans l’atmosphère sont relativement bien connues. Une fois dans ce compartiment sous formes gazeuse et/ou particulaire, ces composés sont transportés à plus ou moins longue distance puis éliminés en fonction des conditions météorologiques par dépôts secs (aérosols) ou humides (pluie et neige). L’impact des POP est planétaire, tous les milieux de l’environnement sont touchés et les milieux aquatiques de montagne ne sont pas épargnés. Plusieurs études ont rapportées la présence de Polychlorobiphényles (PCB) et d’Hydrocarbures Aromatiques Polycycliques (HAP) sur des lacs d’altitude européens où l’atmosphère est l’unique source de pollution. A ce jour, très peu d’études ont été menées en milieux de montagne pour comprendre et identifier les mécanismes de transfert à l’interface entre l’air et l’eau. Ces travaux de thèse sont ainsi focalisés sur les échanges de POP à l’interface air-eau en milieu aquatique de montagne. Dans le but de définir le rôle de l’atmosphère sur ces milieux et de calculer des flux de POP, deux systèmes hydriques distincts ont été étudiés : un lac d’altitude (Lac de la Muzelle, Oisans) et une rivière alpine (Arc, vallée de la Maurienne). Deux familles de POP ont été ciblées pour leurs différentes propriétés physico-chimiques : les HAP et les PCB. Pour l’étude de ces milieux de montagne parfois difficile d’accès, une stratégie d’échantillonnage passive a été choisie. Les systèmes d’échantillonnage employé ont été améliorés, développés au laboratoire ou utilisés tel quel pour échantillonner distinctement toutes les formes de POP dans l’air (gaz, particules, dépôts secs et humides) et dans l’eau (phase dissoute et particulaire). Une comparaison des systèmes d’échantillonneurs atmosphériques passifs a été réalisée pour définir le plus fiable et représentatif. Ces études de transferts air-eau ont été conduites sur le lac d’altitude pendant deux périodes estivales (2014 et 2015) et un suivi de deux ans a été réalisé (2014 à 2016) sur la rivière alpine.Le rôle de l’atmosphère en période estivale a pu être ainsi défini sur le lac d’altitude et des flux d’échanges de polluants à l’interface ont pu être calculés. La rivière alpine étant un système hydrique dynamique plus complexe pour l’étude des transferts air-eau et la quantification de flux, un suivi spatio-temporel de la contamination a tout d’abord été réalisé le long de la rivière et une première approche de calcul de flux de polluants à l’interface a été appliquée.

Atmospheric sources of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are relatively well known. Once in this compartment under both gas and particulate forms, these compounds are carried on more or less long range. Then, pollutants are eliminated by dry (aerosol) or wet (rain, snow) depositions according to meteorological conditions. Cette thèse de doctorat traite de morphogenèse urbaine dans la vallée du Rhône, quelques trois cents kilomètres rectilignes de Lyon à la Méditerranée. Elle soutient l’ « hypothèse projectuelle » Rhodapolis, une structure linéaire fluvio-urbaine, qui a pour ambition d’améliorer l’habitabilité de la ville diffuse dans le corridor rhodanien. Cinq « concepts formels » (Dynamic Blue Mesh, structure linéo-réticulaire interactive, archipel linéaire rhodanien, European Urbanized Rivers, ville rézotopique) y sont énoncés et un laboratoire-prototype in situ (LGV-Lab) y est présenté. Le folioscope liminaire, constitué d’une série de photographies documentaires, porte un regard sur cette Vallée pour révéler la singularité d’un objet géographique qu’on ne sait pas voir. Ce recueil d’images procède d’une extraction d’informations sensibles, sources de problématiques inhérentes au site. La production d’un atlas spécifique comme épreuve épistémo iconographique, via le logiciel Q GIS, a démontré la valeur cognitive de résultats cartographiques observables dont les morphotypes urbains prospectifs sont les plus représentatifs. Le fleuve, lieu extraordinaire à reconsidérer, véritable agrégateur d’urbanité et de tiers-paysage, constitue la réalité physique d’un genius loci qui doit s’immiscer dans une pensée urbaine standard hors-sol trop dématérialisée. La notion de linéarité à l’origine du réseau- façonnant durablement l’environnement y est questionnée à partir de travaux anthropologiques, architecturaux et géographiques. Désurbanisme, architecture organique, Regional Planning invitent à une relation étroite entre territoire et architecture, interaction de deux échelles antagonistes préfigurant une autre manière de concevoir l’espace urbain du XXIème siècle.À travers la définition d’une structure hybride, Rhodapolis se veut une forme urbaine capable de faire cohabiter les deux modèles urbains prédominants de métropolisation et de périurbanisation, pour en extrapoler certaines de leurs qualités respectives. Entre autocritique et essai de généralisation, la conclusion propose l’introspection de Rhodapolis, spécimen d’une quatrième ville pensée par le fleuve, dont hybridité, organicité et europanéité seraient les principales caractéristiques. Enfin, cette thèse soutenue par un architecte, a tenté d’avancer ce qui pourrait définir une architecturologie : à partir d’une méthode expérimentale, un recentrement de la recherche architecturale est esquissé, en affirmant à travers le principe transcalaire les notions de forme, de projet et de conception spatiale, qui constitueraient les fondements de la discipline.

▼ The Owyhee Plateau (OWP) is an intermontane basalt plateau located at the nexus of the Snake River Plain (SRP) and Oregon Plateau/High Lava Plains (OP/HLP) volcanic provinces, which has been the locus of nearly continuous basaltic magmatism since 17 Ma. Between 17-11 Ma, generally evolved basaltic lavas related to the Steens flood basalt event and Oregon-Idaho Graben (OIG) volcanism were erupted around the extending margins of the OWP. Beginning 11 Ma, less differentiated olivine tholeiites were erupted throughout the OWP proper, from low shield vents with alignments consistent with regional stress fields. After 5 Ma, volcanism retreated to the margins of the OWP, ultimately becoming limited to the northern transition region between the OWP and the OIG. The youngest basalts in the OWP region are <0.25 Ma mildly alkaline basalts erupted in this transition region. The OWP is the only location in the northwestern US where basalt types characteristic of the OP/HLP (high-alumina olivine tholeiite, HAOT) and the SRP (SRP-type olivine tholeiite, SROT) occur together in significant quantity, in close spatial and temporal association, and with a full spectrum of compositions intermediate between the two. Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic characteristics are decoupled from bulk chemistry, and reflect time-dependent variations in contributions from different lithospheric and sublithospheric mantle reservoirs. I propose that the OWP is a discrete tectonomagmatic entity within the North American Cordillera resulting from Sevier-style thrusting of accreted lithosphere over a westward-projecting shelf of Precambrian cratonic lithospheric mantle. Low-angle subduction during Laramide time trapped a layer of asthenospheric mantle below the OWP region, which was subsequently modified by fluids and melts from the subducting Farallon slab. Foundering of the Farallon slab caused upwelling of hot, fertile asthenosphere that mixed with this volatile-enriched layer, triggering Steens volcanism. Subsequent melt production from fluid- and melt-metasomatized cratonic and accreted mantle reservoirs beneath the OWP produced the post-11 Ma HAOT-SROT association. The retreat of volcanism to the margins of the OWP, the isotopic character of these lavas, and the absence of endmember SROT on the OWP after 5 Ma reflect the exhaustion of fusible components from the Precambrian lithospheric mantle shelf.
