▼ This study was set to find out teachers' awareness of the HIV/AIDS workplace
policy. It was conducted in four schools in Southern province, Kalomo and Monze
High schools designated as urban, Kabanga and Macha High schools designated as
rural and in Eastern province, Ndake and Petauke High Schools designated as rural
and urban respectively.
The data was collected using Questionnaires for the teachers and face to face
interviews for the headteachers and DEBs. A sample of 90 teachers was selected
for the study of which 68 responded favourably. Six headteachers and three
District Education Board Secretaries (DEBS) were selected for the in-depth
interviews. The findings revealed that MoE had made considerable efforts in disseminating the contents of the policy to teachers in both urban and rural schools. Most teachers were aware of the policy and its provisions, although some especially those in rural areas were not.Further results revealed that since the inception of the policy, deaths among
teachers due to HIV-related illnesses had reduced tremendously and that
headteachers had taken a proactive role in giving care and support to infected
teachers who had made some disclosure.
On the other hand behaviour change was reported by some teachers who disclosed
that they had gone for Voluntary Counselling and Testing. However, it was learnt the issue of stigma prevented others from coming out in the open to disclose their status. This resulted in them getting little support from their schools as the'ir privacy was respected.
All-in-all the steps taken by MoE in coming up with the policy in 2004 are bearing
fruits although there lies a big challenge in the implementation process which most
teachers during the study expressed disappointment with. It was hoped that more
awareness would be raised on the contents of the policy which might further
reduce HIV-related illnesses and deaths and thereby increase the teacher-pupil
ratio and productivity in schools.
For sure teachers were a key and valuable resource in the education sector thus
Government cannot afford to continue losing them after their training at great cost.

▼ In Canada, queer men (or ‘men who have sex with men’) continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, representing at least 50% of all people living with HIV/AIDS (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2012). Every year, thousands of new infections significantly increase the toll that HIV/AIDS takes on queer men and their communities. With this epidemiological reality as context, I set out to explore how my subjectivity (as a gay, HIV-positive man) was and is shaped, specifically with respect to the following HIV/AIDS-related, socio-cultural phenomena: activism, community service, ‘safer’ sex, diagnosis and criminalization. These five phenomena provide focal points (or themes) for the presentation and analysis of my experience of living with HIV/AIDS, both before and after becoming infected. Through insider knowledge, my research examines three decades of personal stories, using critical reflexivity to increase my awareness (as well as my reader’s) of the myriad challenges and complexities of living one’s life in the midst of the ongoing pandemic.

▼ Despite the enormous amount of biological variation
and technical uncertainty in sequence data, most phylogenetic
workflows propagate a single point estimate throughout the numerous
analysis components, and only in a forward direction. This approach
relies on three implicit assumptions: (i) the order of the analysis
steps is biologically justified, (ii) a Markovian dependency
structure exists between analysis components, and (iii) there is
low relative entropy between results at each analysis step. There
is evidence that these assumptions, in particular low relative
entropy, are frequently violated in empirical studies with
potential detrimental effects in phylogenetic analyses. In this
thesis, I lay out a probabilistic framework that provides a unified
perspective to provide context for evaluating priorities for future
developments of methods and tools. I then develop a generative
model of the natural and technical processes that produce observed
genomic reads within the framework that can be used to assess and
validate approaches that relax the implicit assumptions. Finally, I
explore two ways to accommodate and propagate more information in a
phylogenetic workflow. The first way, an HMM profile-sampling
approach to genome assembly, relaxes the assumption of low relative
entropy in results from the genome assembly analysis component.
This approach finds relevant applications to
HIV transmission
networks. The second way, an iterative approach to identifying and
resolving transcriptome assembly errors, capitalizes on the
assumption of Markovian dependence.

▼ The
HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa is both
invisible and ubiquitous: seemingly indiscernible on one's face and
undetectable within a population, and pervasive in its presence
across global health agendas, flows of intervention capital, and
(im)moral pronouncements. Since it was first identified in Nigeria
in 1986, a positive diagnosis has widely been considered a death
sentence, presumed to place in jeopardy one's health, education,
work, and family; stripping a person of all but her (deteriorating)
organic existence. The advent of voluntary
HIV testing and
subsidized treatment, initiated in the early 2000s by an assemblage
of international and local health and development agencies, is
poised to reconfigure the exclusionary dynamics that have
accompanied this prognosis. This dissertation explores the loves,
pains, hopes, frustrations, and dilemmas of northern Nigerian women
participating in the world that these global health campaigns have
opened up. Focusing upon their pursuit of dignified and fulfilled
marriages, I show how women infected with
HIV engage with both the
ubiquity and the anonymity of the epidemic's political face. These
women seek to avert the threats that this stigmatizing diagnosis
poses to their social identities. At the same time, they attempt to
forge new relationships that both reinforce their respectability
and help them obtain support for their healthcare and daily
subsistence needs. Women participate in public health programs,
paradoxically, to secure their privacy. Their ability to make
claims for and benefit from testing and treatment is contingent
upon the ways in which institutions, their social ties, and their
very physiologies intersect, creating new life trajectories for
some and excluding others.
HIV-positive women's marriage
aspirations are windows onto the symbolic importance of families in
Nigeria, the political economic dynamics that shape social and
illness prognoses in resource-poor settings, and the overarching
constraints that prevent women from enacting global expectations of
health citizenship.

▼ HIV remains among the leading sources of disease
burden worldwide. There is considerable optimism regarding the
possibility of eliminating
HIV transmission using multi-method
strategies anchored on anti-retroviral therapy. Such interventions
require optimal engagement in care – the dynamic process by which a
person living with
HIV interacts with the
HIV care system through
testing, linkage, drug adherence, retention and viral suppression.
The
HIV care cascade, a continuum from identifying infected people
to attaining virologic suppression, has become a useful tool for
describing engagement in
HIV care. The purpose of this research is
to improve prediction and effect estimation along the care cascade
by integrating machine learning and causal inference. First, we
compare the performance of single statistical models to that of an
ensemble machine learning approach which aggregates estimates from
constituent singular models, with regard to predicting which
HIV-infected patients in western Kenya will fail to link to care.
Second, we consider the effect of sex on linkage to a care clinic
after testing
HIV-positive using targeted learning, a general
statistical methodology for constructing data-adaptive estimators
of user-supplied target parameters of the probability distribution
of the data. Finally, we examine the effect of sex on rates of loss
to follow-up from care over time using a longitudinal targeted
learning technique. Given a shortlist of demographic,
socio-economic, and access to care variables, it is possible to
accurately predict which of the patients who test positive for
HIV
will or will not link to a clinic for ongoing care. Male sex is
associated with a slightly higher risk of failing to link to care.
Gender-specific interventions to promote linkage may be useful in
the African epidemic context. Finally, among those who link to
care, the effect of sex on loss to follow-up may vary over time in
care, with males being at a slightly higher risk earlier during
follow-up and females at higher risk later. Models that were not
based on targeted estimation were biased with regard to the effects
of sex on linkage and loss to follow-up.

▼ Since the first case of
AIDS was recognized in America in 1981,
HIV/
AIDS has spread rapidly throughout the world. Different studies showed that a great proportion of people living with
HIV/
AIDS do not know that they carry the virus making VCT service underutilized. However, the reasons for young people for not taking VCT services are not well known. Moreover, University students fall within the most sexually active and high
HIV risk group. This study tried to assess the reasons why Bahir Dar University students prefer to or not to take
HIV test. This study was conducted from March - April 2008 among Bahir Dar University undergraduate students to assess the factors affecting voluntary counseling and testing uptake. The study design was descriptive cross-sectional. Stratified random sampling was applied to select samples. A standardized questionnaire was used after pre-test to collect quantitative data. Data entry and analysis was done using SPSS. A total of 360 students participated in the study of whom 255 were males. Majority (90.6%) were within the age range of 18 to 23 years. The mean age was 21.26(± sd 1.987). Most of the respondents (95.3%) were single. The study revealed that 38.6% of the study participants had undergone
HIV test. Stepwise multivariate analysis showed that being female, second year or above, starting sexual intercourse and knowledge about VCT location were positively associated likelihood of having had
HIV testing. Respondents with stigmatizing attitude were less likely to utilize the service.
The study shows that stigma still plays a major role as a barrier for utilization of
HIV testing services. The University should intensify activities pertaining to curbing stigma and discrimination so that the willingness of students for
HIV counseling and testing could be paralleled with actual use of
HIV testing.

▼ This paper examines the use of indigenous communication channels for
HIV/
AIDS prevention strategies in Erob woreda, Eastern Zone of Tigray.
To this part, Qualitative Research and mainly Case Study was employed to
explore the communication strategies, the folk media forms, the
appropriateness of the currently employed channels of communication and
the nature of the language of intervention communication for the epidemic
prevention. The study used individual in-depth interviews, focus group
discussions and participant observation for generating data from two sub-
districts of the woreda namely Daya-Alitena and Ingal areas. With this, the
paper attempted to examine different scholarly observations, theories and
models to the significance of folk media in development communication.
Hence, the findings from the study indicate that the communities use
different forms of folk media in their day to day needs and believe them as
potential conduits for any societal concerns. However, when it comes to the
communication strategies and their appropriateness for the intervention
programs, it lacks to employ folk media channels though most practitioners
know them. In terms of community participation in the programs, it is
revealed that the people’s literacy levels and the types of intervention
channels remained incompatible. There is also language barrier as most
intervention programs are carried out using Tigrigna language to which a
number of the Erob communities don’t comprehend. Consequently, the
overall result of the study signifies that; little use of folk media channels,
low level of community participation due to limited knowledge about the
epidemic, and the language of the intervention programs itself appear to
make the intervention programs less effective in the woreda.

▼ For the last two and half decades
HIV/
AIDS has been causing a great damage to human life.
HIV remains a global health problem of unprecedented dimensions. Ethiopia is one of the sub
Saharan country affected by the epidemic. For instance, in 2005 there were 1,320,000 persons
living with
HIV/
AIDS in Ethiopia. There were 353 new infections and 338 deaths per day at the
national level.
However these days with the discovery of ART drugs, mortality rate decreased. Even though
mortality rate decreased, there were problems created after the invention of the drug. Since
taking the drug needs >95% adherence which means not missing more than one dose per
month to avoid the emergence of drug resistant
HIV strains. Otherwise the virus will replicates
and mutates (changes its character, including its ability to resist drugs) at a very high rate. Non-
adherence by patients on ART has serious consequence both on the individual as well as the
society.
According to different studies conducted through out the country, starting spiritual treatment
like tsebel is one of the reasons for non adherence by patients. The belief that goes saying modern
medicine could not be taken with spiritual treatment (tsebel) by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church
has been creating a problem for the past few years. However, the church has changed its stand
and started to educate the clergy about this issue.
The study uses qualitative method which includes in-depth interview and focus group
discussion. The data is collected from two holy water site: Entoto Mariam church and Urael
church. The data is collected from four target groups which include: - Religious leaders, People
Living With
HIV (Who are taking ART with tsebel and who stopped taking ART after they
started tsebel), Community leaders and Actors (Organizations who are working on
HIV and
related issues).
Eventually, the findings of the study show that there is awareness about ART and adherence
among religious leaders, PLWHA and community leaders. The training given by EOC helped to
create awareness and to make dialogue among religious leaders. As a result, there is found to be a
behavioral change among religious leaders. They started advising PLWHA not to stop their ART
drug when they start tsebel. The communication between religious leaders and PLWHA is
limited to interpersonal communication (counseling) because religious leaders are not
comfortable to talk about the compatibility of ART and tsebel in public. Even those religious
leaders, who are giving education in public, do it rarely. The absence of a written policy by the
church, scarcity of mass communication, and community resistance are some of the problems
that are revealed by this study. To solve these problems, availability of policy, sensitization of the
congregants at public places and churches regularly, interpersonal communication with
PLWHA and the use of Mass Media in the form of TV spots and radio dialogues are
recommended.

▼ The
HIV/
AIDS epidemic has affected millions of people all over the world. In
most countries, the
HIV epidemic is related to behaviors that expose individuals
to the virus. And the media plays pivotal role in disseminating information and
creating awareness about
HIV/
AIDS and other health related issues. One of the
programs is 'Betegna' which works on the fight against
HIV/
AIDS and other
health and social related issues. Audience Reception Analysis of 'Betegna' Radio
Program: The case of Amhara Mass Media Agency seeks to describe how the
program contents or messages are interpreted by the target audience and how
relevant they are to the audiences.
The study analyzed the access and use of media to determine audience's tuning
habit, the relevance of the program to the audience, the language use, and
interpretation or understanding of program contents were examined through
focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and letters sent to the program
producers. Four FGD which involved 25 participants were formed and the
groups were arranged based on age. Most participants of the FGD used to be
part of a listening group arranged by the program producers. In addition, three
in-depth individual interviews were conducted with three program producers.
The finding indicates that the time of transmission is a factor for less regularity
of audiences. Audiences, also, believe that the duration of the program is too
short. The other factor the study revealed is that low level of education affects
the understanding of language. Those who are uneducated and whose level of
education is less than high schools have faced difficulties of understanding the
message of the radio program.

▼ The use of high active antiretroviral therapy in people living with
HIV/
AIDS is increasing worldwide. In Rwanda, above 70 % of people in need of antiretroviral therapies is getting them. This drug therapy is associated with abnormal fat redistribution and metabolic complications which increase the risks of cardiovascular and diabetes diseases among these patients. The best recommended preventive and treating modality for these complications is physical activity participation. Despite this recommendation, there is lack of information about physical activity in
HIV individuals under high active antiretroviral therapy. The current study aims to determine physical activity levels among people living with
HIV treated with high active antiretroviral therapy in Kigali, Rwanda. A cross-sectional design using quantitative method was used. The participant's levels of physical activity participation and their association with anthropometric profiles were measured, using a structured self-administered questionnaire adapted from the Sub-Saharan Africa Activity Questionnaire. Based on a scientific calculation, 407 clients passing through the clinics were included in the study. A convenient sample of people attending the clinics approached to participate voluntarily in the study. The statistical package for social sciences version 19.0 and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Inferential statistics like Chi-square test was used to determine the associations between physical activity levels and anthropometric profiles (p<0.05). Of the participants, 77% were female with a mean age of 38.82 years (SD=8.9. According to body mass index and weight hip ration, approximately 40% and 43% were obese and overweight respectively. Obesity was more common amongst the females (45%). The study found a high prevalence of inactivity in the following activities, of leisure-time (82.6%), household (71%), walking to/from work (61.7%) and work related physical activities (75%). Obesity was found to be strongly associated with inactivity in all types of activity. The findings of the current study highlighted the lack of motivation, lack of time and fear of worsening the disease amongst the strong barriers to physical activity participation. The current study recommends education about the benefits of physical activity participation and encouragement of patient treated with high active antiretroviral therapy in Rwanda to be emphasized on to improve their lives.

▼ The main purpose of the study was to investigate the coping ability of HIV and AIDS positive patients. The research venue was Katutura Intermediate Hospital: Windhoek. The qualitative approach and phenomenological design was used to gain in-depth information about how participants cope with their illness. Data were collected from 20 respondents using semistructured interviews. A tape recorder and field notes were used as supportive methods. A content analysis was done to analyze the data.
The findings were based on six sections that were explored during the semi-structured
interviews which are as follows: personal information, support networks available, the
influence of cultural world views as well as coping mechanisms and counseling needs.
The findings indicated that the participants who receive HIV and AIDS medications left school in Grade 8. They have knowledge about HIV and AIDS which they get from the Radio but still the information is not enough to enable them to cope with their illness.
The findings suggest that people need support from the community, churches and their families but this support network is not sufficient to enable them to cope. They need the support for as long as they live. The investigation into the cultural world view towards AIDS indicated that community members see HIV and AIDS as a bad disease and view people who have it as bad also. HIV positive people then feel discriminated against and fear that they will experience stigma in the community and
that they will be dying soon. The findings confirmed that the HIV and AIDS participants do not cope with their illness. They will only cope when their needs are sufficiently met. The patients get counseled by nurses, lay counselors, social workers, psychologists, and doctors. The participants suggested that they need counselling from professionals for as long as they live.

▼ HIV mainstreaming is increasingly being seen as one of the strategies for an effective
national response. With an estimated HIV prevalence of 14.3 percent in the 15 to 49 years age group, Zambia has adopted a multi-sectoral response to HIV and AIDS control
(ZDHS 2007, NAC 2009). For line ministries, government has pioneered this initiative by
encouraging them to mainstream HIV and AIDS in their respective sectors. The study
aimed to evaluate HIV and AIDS Mainstreaming in Line Ministries. More specifically,
the study focused on establishing the extent of HIV/AIDS mainstreaming in the Line
Ministries, documenting which Ministries are utilizing the Mainstreaming guidelines and
exploring barriers to HIV/AIDS mainstreaming.
This was cross-sectional evaluation study that employed a logical framework.
Furthermore, the study utilized both qualitative and quantitative methods of data
collection and analysis to assess the extent of HIV and AIDS mainstreaming in the
government of Zambia’s line ministries and to identify barriers to effective
mainstreaming. The study population was comprised of staff from Line Ministries. The
qualitative data was obtained from 19 individuals and was analyzed using N-Vivo. For the quantitative data, multistage sampling was used to sample a total of 516 respondents from line ministries. The data was collected by means of a structured questionnaire and was analyzed using SPSS version 18 The determinants of mainstreaming were found to be establishment of support groups,(OR 2.73 95% CI 1.32-5.63) for staff living with HIV, provision of condoms male/female for staff (OR 2.78 95% CI 1.29-5.97), accessibility of ARVs (OR 3.03 95% CI 1.12-8.20)by staff. We conclude that mainstreaming is an important and effective strategy in mitigating the impact of HIV in line ministries. However, there are key elements that constitute a functioning mainstreaming program as revealed in the study findings.

▼ Early Childhood Care Education and Development (ECCED) is education offered to children below the age seven. In Zambia the provision of this type of education has been left in the hands of the private sector including Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), local communities and religious institutions. However, the Ministry of Education provides professional services to pre-school education by training teachers, developing curriculum, learning and teaching materials and monitoring standards. In September 2004, the
Government of Zambia gazetted ECCED to the Ministry of Education. The Ministry has since made ECCED one of the sub-sectors in the Ministry. Strategies for coordination and implementation of ECCED are being
developed among them are management of HIV and AIDS in the ECCED programmes and centres. The general purpose of this research was to determine how HIV/AIDS was managed in the centres and how members of
staff responded to the HIV and AIDS mitigation strategies in ECCED institutions.
Data were collected from selected preschools in Chawama, Chilenje, Chilenje
South, Chilenje South Extension, Kanyama and Libala Extension of Lusaka district. A total number of 69 respondents were interviewed from the institutions visited. The respondents included administrators, Project Coordinators, Head teachers, teachers in charge and Pre-school teachers.
Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. Questionnaire and interviews were administered in the selected centres. The coded data were double entered in a built data entry sheet in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 13.0 to ensure range checks. The same package was used for data processing, analysis and manipulation to produce graphic
presentations. The research showed that ECCED institutions were run by the Government,Private Companies, Individuals or Faith Based Organizations. Those
institutions run by Faith Based Organizations (FBOs), were under the Catholic Church, Pentecostal Rock of Salvation Ministries and the Seventh Day
Adventist Church (SDA).Considering that staff in ECCED institutions handled very young children who may be HIV and AIDS infected or affected, training in HIV and AIDS should be compulsory. There was need for a programme for parents/guardians of
children in ECCED institutions to get counselled on HIV and AIDS to enhance
their understanding of the operations of such institutions. ECCED institutions
should be provided with HIV and AIDS Information Education Communications (IEC) materials like brochures, flyers and wall charts. The members of staff that accessed these materials were those that had
opportunity to attend workshops, seminars and training on HIV and AIDS.The findings of the study include the following: HIV and AIDS pandemic have impacted the country negatively. The ECCED has been left out in the programmes and implementation of activities aimed at mitigating the spread
of HIV and AIDS. The Ministry of Education has developed training manuals and other materials on HIV and AIDS, but none of the visited…

▼ Couples counseling and testing has been widely identified as a key HIV/AIDS prevention and management strategy. However, there has been very low uptake of couples testing in Zambia.Study Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe the factors associated with couples counseling and testing in Kanyama Compound.
Materials and Methods: A questionnaire was administered among individuals who were invited by the Zambia-Emory HIV Research Programme (ZEHRP) to attend couples counseling sessions at the Ministry of Health run Kanyama clinic. The study questioned both those who were invited and came for counseling as well those who were invited but did not attend counseling as a couple. Further,a qualitative focus-group discussionwas held with individuals attending counseling sessions at the clinic.
Results: Unavailability of partners to go for couples CT (43%), distance to testing facilities (32%) and lack of transport money to attend couples CT (29%) are the likely major factors that hinder access to services. Social factors (age, socioeconomic, education etc) play a role but do not seem to be key enhancers nor hindrance Conclusion and Policy Implications:Various interventions are necessary to remove physical barriers to couples testing including workplace programs that enhance testing of working males with their partners. Mainstreaming of services at all health facilities needs to be initiated together with the development of structures and information systems.
Limitations: The study population was a convenient sample and subjects were not necessarily representative of the underlying population in Kanyama. Sample size, based on program outreach was small, which precluded more advanced statistical analyses for generalization purposes.

▼ Atazanavir-ritonavir (ATV-r) has been recommended by the World Health Organization as part of second-line combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in HIV-infected patients
aged 6 years and above. In 2013, the Zambia HIV treatment program introduced ATV-ras an alternative Protease Inhibitor (PI) to lopinavir-ritonavir (LPV-r) because of its gastrointestinal tolerability, lipid profile and once-daily dosing. However, data about the
safety and tolerability of ATV-r-containing regimens in sub-Saharan Africa continues to be inadequate. A cross sectional study was undertaken which evaluated clinical and laboratory events
among HIV-infected adult patients initiating ATV-r-based second-line cART at the
University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia between December 2013 and April
2014. A sample of 49 patients’ medical records were selected and reviewed.
SPSS version
16 was used for analysis. Association between demographic variables (age and gender)and the AEs was assessed using chi-square. Ethical approval was obtained from the University of Zambia Biomedical Research Ethics Committee.
Following initiation of ATV-r, the vast majority of the study patients did not report adverse events (n=40, 81.6%). Among those with adverse events, jaundice (n=2, 4.1%)and diarrhoea (n=4, 8.2%) were the predominant complaints. Overall, hyperbilirubinaemia
was the most common laboratory adverse event (n=3, 6.1%) and it was not associated with either age (p=0.755) or gender (p=0.604). The clinical adverse events reported by the patients also showed no association with the demographic characteristics. There were no
treatment discontinuations of the ATV-r regimen based on these events.
ATV-r-based regimen appeared to be safe in the study population. Hyperbilirubinaemia
was the most frequently observed laboratory AE though it did not prompt discontinuation
of this drug. Continued safety and tolerability monitoring of ATV-based regimens is needed in resource limited settings, particularly for longer observation periods. Direct
comparisons with other PI-based combinations are urgent, for the precise understanding of the efficacy and toxic effects.

The aim of this study was to characterize the nutritional status, its prognostic significance and risk factors for malnutrition in patients with HIV/AIDS in a referral hospital for infectious diseases in Salvador, Bahia. During the six months, all patients were identified with HIV/AIDS, 20-50 years, with a diagnosis prior to admission or conducted in the first seven days of hospitalization. Interview and chart review were used to collect information about exposure risk for malnutrition. The body mass index (BMI), adequacy of triceps skinfold (TSF) and corrected arm muscle area (CAMA) were used as anthropometric indicators. Univariate analysis were used to identify risk factors associated with malnutrition. The associations in multivariate analysis (p<0.05) were expressed by Odds Ratio and confidence interval of 95%. Of the 97 patients who were included in the study, 62% were male and the median age of 33 years (IQR: 30-42). It was observed that 41% of patients had low weight, according to BMI, and more than 60% of patients with BMI ≥ 18.5 kg/m2…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study was to find out whether there is an association between family structure (a well-structured family or a non-structured family) and sexual risk factors related to HIV infection of youths aged 14-24 [inclusive] in Gaborone, Botswana.
Research Design
A descriptive research design using quantitative approach was used in this study.
Data Collection
Data was collected through questionnaires handed to the respondents to fill and return the responses back to the researcher. Youths from Old Naledi location, University of Botswana and Gaborone Senior Secondary School served as study population.
Findings
The results showed there was no significant association between family structure family and the sexual risk factors related to HIV infection of youths aged 14-24 [inclusive]. Nevertheless, the results showed that as young people get older, they indulge in high-risk behaviours related to HIV infection, such as having sex under the influence of alcohol, having multiple sexual partners and having sex in exchange for money.
Conclusion
The findings have shown that the youth in general are at high risk of contracting HIV infection. A high number of them are sexually active, and therefore it is suggested that they be encouraged to be more pro-active in order to prevent HIV infection or infection with other sexually transmitted diseases.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Lesotho it’s one of the countries with highest prevalence, so the international funding agencies (donors) has resorted to help out in the fight of this pandemic. Donors are the main funder’s of the projects/organisations within the country which are in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Numerous international development agencies (donors) have established an intervention to fight and respond to the challenges brought by the HIV/AIDS pandemic through projects within the country. Projects set aims and objectives about HIV/AIDS and implement them with the purpose of reducing prevalence, mitigating the impact and as a way of improving lives of People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Donor funded projects/organisations seem not be sustainable as it seems there is a challenge of monitoring and evaluation.
The study was undertaken to identify current monitoring and evaluation practices. To determine challenges faced by projects in the implementation of monitoring and evaluation within donor funded projects/organisations. The data collection method used was semi-structured interview questions and the questionnaire (Likert Scale). Participants who were monitoring and evaluations officers and the managers were interviewed.
The study found out that all the six organisations practise monitoring and evaluation and there are full time officers. The organisations faced various challenges like funding, non-existence of policy, no systems in place to follow and lack of monitoring and evaluation of concept in the implementation of monitoring and evaluation. All the six organisations do report to donors frequently. All organisations had a belief that M & E is a necessity for sustainability, and aligning results with strategic objectives. In conclusion the study found out that all organisations have M & E in place. Recommendations are provided for donor funded organisations.

▼ Thesis (MPhil (Industrial Psychology. Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management)) – University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Amidst the proliferation of HIV/AIDS policies in existence, the study undertook to examine
the extent to which workplace policies on HIV/AIDS in two NGOs in Pretoria are being
implemented through activities and programmes within the organisation. The researcher
conducted two qualitative methods, a document analysis on both NGOs workplace HIV
policies and a semi structured interview with senior managers within both organisations.
It was found that workplace policies on HIV/AIDS are present in both organisations
however, as it relates to the execution of these policies there has been little to no
implementation. The issue of human resources has been highlighted as a main challenge
within the organisations, along with funding, stigma and monitoring. Recommendations are
provided for both policy makers and NGOs to assist collectively in charting a way forward in
reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was conducted with the aim to establish how knowledge, attitudes, practice and
behaviour influence nurses’ care for HIV/AIDS patients in public hospitals in the Tshwane
Metropolitan area. This knowledge is necessary in order to provide suggestions to empower
and upskill nurses to enable them and the relevant hospitals to take care of HIV/AIDS
patients effectively and efficiently in the Tshwane Metropolitan area in particular, and in
South Africa in general.
This study was motivated or informed by the fact that in South Africa a great majority of
people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) are treated in state hospitals (Shisana et al,
2005) as quoted by Dijkstra, et al (2007) where they are cared for by nurses, doctors and
other health professionals. Moreover to date little is known about the practical use that
medical staff make of the HIV/AIDS policy in state hospitals in South Africa, as well as their
knowledge on HIV/AIDS, and relevant attitudes, practice and behaviour in general.
The research question was to establish or determine to what extent the nurses’ knowledge,
attitudes, practice and behaviour influence their care for HIV/AIDS patients at public
hospitals in the Tshwane Metropolitan area.
To confirm or reject our assumptions relating to nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, practice and
behaviour, 83 male and females nurses, selected by means of census sampling from Steve
Biko Academic Hospital, Dr George Mukari Hospital and Kalafong Hospital (all these
hospitals are in the Tshwane Metropolitan Area), were asked to answer a questionnaire based
on the variables of knowledge, attitudes, practice and behaviour.
The results of this study indicate that the majority of the nurses in the targeted hospitals are
more experienced in caring for HIV/AIDS patients because they have been caring and
treating HIV/AIDS patients for more than four years. They are aware of HIV/AIDS’
existence, its transmission and prevention. The level of understanding of the content of the
different training sessions on various aspects of HIV/AIDS care and management for those
who attended in-service training sessions organised to prepare them for their job, appeared to
be adequate and extensive. And as a result, they possess some in-depth knowledge about
HIV/AIDS. They are happy because they are content with their jobs, as well as caring and
treating HIV/AIDS patients. Most of them have very positive outlooks and because of this,
they behave positively towards HIV/AIDS patients. Moreover, because of being aware of the
risk involved in their job, as well as its implications, they practice universal precautions when
caring for and treating their patients. They also enjoy support from their families and are not
afraid of contracting HIV while carrying out their tasks.
However, there are still nurses in the targeted hospitals unaware or in denial of HIV/AIDS’
existence,…

▼ Thesis (MPhil (Industrial Psychology. Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management)) – University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is mainly transmitted through sexual intercourse mostly
among the sexually active population aged 15-24. Young adults account for the highest
percentage of AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) in Southern Africa, Lesotho
inclusive.
Causes of the increased rates of STIs/HIV in young people are complex; the main reasons
include biological factors, risky sexual behaviour patterns, transmission dynamics and treatmentseeking
behaviour. The continuous spread of STI/HIV/AIDS depends on behavior and sexual
habits.
Majority of the population in Lesotho are Christians and morality is been preached daily. It is
alarming that all these preaching do not reduce unsafe sexual behavior and the spread of
STI/HIV/AIDS. Many Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) promote comprehensive prevention
approaches but find it difficult to discuss sex and safer practices, particularly condom use, in a
faith context.
It is important to break the silence around HIV, dispel myths and misinformation, and to
overcome stigma and discrimination within the faith context.
Aim: The aim to study is to assess the knowledge of youths in a religious environment towards
STI/HIV/AIDS and condom use.
Method: The study was conducted among 30 members of RCCG youths with equal gender
balance (15 males and 15 females) aged between 15 and 24 years. A semi-structured, selfadministered
questionnaire was used to collect the data over 2 weeks. The data was the analyzed
using statistical software EPI Info version 3.5.1.
Result: Knowledge STI/HIV/AIDS across the age group was good with those less than 19 years
of age having 92.3% and those more than 20 years of age having 82.4%. Likewise, half of the
RCCG youths less than 19 years have good knowledge of condom use while about two thirds of
youths more than 20 years of age have good knowledge of condom use as compared to 33.3%
with poor knowledge.
About three quarter (73.3%) of female RCCG youths have good knowledge of condom use as
compared to about half (53.3%) of the male youths.
All RCCG youths (100%) in tertiary institution have good knowledge of condom use as
compared to 60.9 % of those in secondary school.
All the participants had formal education with 60% of them in secondary school and the
remaining 40% in tertiary institution.
Conclusion and Recommendations: This research study gave an opportunity to an air of
openness on STI/HIV/AIDS and condom use among RCCG youths.
Churches preach abstinence, but Abstinence and preventive measures are to be preached
alongside each other.
RCCG church should inform all church members (including the youths) about STI/HIV/AIDS
and preventive methods. Seminars/Workshops should be regularly organized to bring the youths
together so that they can freely express themselves concerning issues around STI/HIV/AIDS.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is believed and observed by many that the clinics or hospitals that administer ARV are congested and patients wait for a long time for services thus the study undertook to de-termine the factors contributing to the delay in distribution of ARV and other related treatments for people living with HIV during follow up at the ARV clinic of the Rundu State Hospital.
The researcher conducted a mixed approach whereby qualitative and quantitative data was collected, the researcher conducted two qualitative methods, a document analysis of the National Guidelines for Antiretroviral Therapy for the Republic of Namibia (Ministry of Health and Social Services) and unpublished government documents of the clinic and a semi structured interview with the immediate supervisors of the clinic. This was fi-nished with questionnaires for CDC health workers and patients that have been using the centre for at least 4 months and more.
It was found that the CDC clinic is truly congested with patients and all the participants acknowledged the long waiting time and long queues of the patients at the clinic. This issue has been highlighted as the main challenge within the clinic, along with few health workers and no enough counseling and consulting rooms. Recommendations are pro-vided for both the clinic and the nation at large or the line ministry to assist collectively in finding a way forward in reducing the long queues and long waiting time of the pa-tients at the CDC clinics in Namibia.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research paper is based on the perception of people over the death by HIV and Aids. It looks at the impact of culture and beliefs on the management of HIV and Aids in the community and also in the country as whole.
This research aims to establish the root course of covering death of by HIV and Aids, often due to fear of discrimination and isolation. Communities need to be educated on discrimination and stigma that comes about with people living with HIV and Aids.
This study was conducted at Mvelaphanda Primary School children, in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa. The main focus was on the death of parents of the learners at the school and ultimately learners themselves, who some of them where born with HIV epidemic. Some of the children became orphans of the disease.
The collection of data was in three fold: questionnaire, interview and observation and discussions. The information gathered was manipulated to bring about the expected results.
Analysis of the data indicated that where there is no behavioral and attitude change, there would be more death by the pandemic than ever before. It is the responsibility of everyone, be it heads of families, religious leaders, politicians, business people and teachers to fight against the spread of HIV and Aids pandemic.
This study has also discovered that medical report on the cause of death is concealed in order for policies to payout. This distortion of information does not help in the fight against the spread of HIV and Aids
All stakeholders should work together in the support of those will disclose their status without fear of rejection, isolation and discriminated against. Schools, churches and community gatherings should be better used as a plat-form for that. If such conditions are created the spread of the HIV will be reduced and the prevention strategy will succeed.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Nigeria has the second highest disease burden of
HIV/
AIDS in sub Saharan Africa after South Africa with adult
HIV prevalence of 4.1%, with an estimated 3,130 million people living with
HIV (Male-1,320,000: Female-1,820,000-2010) (FMOH, 2010). The
HIV epidemic in Cross River state is 7.1% in 2010; and ranks as the 9th highest in the country. General Hospital Ogoja is one of the secondary level hospitals in Cross River State of Nigeria that offers Comprehensive
HIV/
AIDS services. Although the prevalence of
HIV is very high in Cross River state (7%) that of General Hospital is not readily known. The uptake of
HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) among health care workers is relatively low, despite the fact that the awareness of
HIV and
AIDS in Nigeria by adult population is said to be generally very high (93.8%).The use of condom in the last sex act was low (16%) despite the fact that sexual transmission is the predominant mode of
HIV spread in Nigeria (NARHS 2007)
To determine whether the knowledge health care workers in GH Ogoja have about
HIV/
AIDS affect their sexual behaviour; a quantitative approach of research design was used through a questionnaire
A total of one hundred and thirty questionnaires were distributed and all were returned. There were few abstentions on some of the questions possibly due to its private nature but generally the overall responses were devoid of inconsistencies and the response rate was well over 98%.
The findings from the study showed that greater that 90% of the respondents are quite knowledgeable with the cause of
HIV, modes of transmission and prevention of
HIV. While the respondents exhibit a high knowledge with respect to modes of transmission through sexual intercourse(96.8%); their knowledge with respect to safer sex practices with use of condom in penetrative sex calls for further review. It would be expected that 100% of all respondent will be fully abreast with information on the modes of transmission of
HIV and its prevention.
Condom use in stable relationship connotes different meanings to the respondents. While 109(85.2%) of the 128 respondents agreed to the use of condom among couples when the status of one of their partner is unknown. The response to the question on whether the use of condom affects sexual relationship portrays an interesting finding. 71(55.4%) of the total respondents disagreed with the fact that condom use affect sexual relationship while 42(32.8%) respondents agreed. It may not be out of place to assume that a lot of HCWs may not be condomizing effectively based on the impression that condom use during sex affect sexual relationship.
Health care workers live and interact freely with other members of the society and are potential bridging group for disseminating
HIV into the larger population. The finding from GH Ogoja portrays the fact that though the knowledge of
HIV among them is very high their full application of the knowledge with respect to sexual behavioural change is still doubtful. A more qualitative study like focus group…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study sought to determine the effectiveness of a TB/HIV collaboration programme in an infectious disease clinic in Frances Baard District, Kimberley, and assess the underlying challenges that clients face while accessing TB and HIV treatment, care and support services from the health care facility.
South Africa is facing one of the worst dual epidemics of TB and HIV in the world. It is also described as one of the countries with the highest TB burden in the world. HIV has been shown to fuel the TB epidemic by promoting progression to active disease, both in people with recently acquired and latent disease. Given that a large proportion of TB patients are HIV infected and experience considerable morbidity and mortality, integration of both services at the same service point becomes unavoidable.
Data was collection through focus group discussions and self-administered questionnaires. It was clear that TB/HIV programme collaboration has not been optimized. Clients travel from one service point to another to access TB and HIV care. Service delivery sometimes is delayed due to several factors and therefore clients miss the appointments at the other service point. This has led to adherence challenge, treatment default, treatment failure and increasing burden of TB/HIV disease. The research determined that the key to optimize TB/HIV collaboration is to provide both services from the same service point as well as to improve the level of care to the clients. Shared responsibility should be encouraged among service providers/caregivers and clients in an infectious disease unit. Timely interventions to clients will reduce the morbidity rates associated with TB/HIV co-infection and more deaths will be averted especially if full integration is implemented. It is increasingly evident that TB and HIV programmes must collaborate fully to counteract the impact of HIV on TB.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Contraception is defined as the prevention of pregnancy through temporary or permanent means and it is a fundamental element of family planning (Bafana 2010). A contraceptive helps and protects women from unwanted pregnancies. While contraceptives are widely and easily available the statistics for teenage pregnancy remains high and the use of contraceptives is very low in South Africa. The South African Demographic and Health Survey (SADHS) statistics show that there has been an increase in the number of teenage pregnancy when comparing the statistics of the two periods 1998 and 2008. The numbers have almost doubled to 16% of the learner population being pregnant in some provinces. The Eastern Cape (EC) Province is no exception. Aims and objectives of this study were to understand if teenagers today know enough about the use of contraceptives and about social and medical problems associated with teen pregnancy? If yes, why are they not using contraceptives and how can we change that to prevent teenage pregnancy and unwanted babies.
This study made use of a triangulation methodology whereby both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. The study was two-pronged with the target group being teenagers at school and pregnant teenagers attending ante-natal clinics (age 13-19yrs). About 120 teenagers were recruited for the study. In-depth interviews were conducted through use of questionnairesd amongst the school youth which involved both boys and girls. In ANC interviews and focus groups were conducted when the girls were in their second to fifth month of pregnancy.
Results indicated that understanding of contraceptives and reproductive health amongst teenagers was poor, condoms were the contraceptive method most known by teenagers and their understanding of the menstrual cycle was inaccurate . Most teenagers who knew about contraceptives perceived them as bad saying they make you wet. They do perceiveepregnancy as a negative event with consequences such as loss of a boyfriend, loss of friends, blame from friends and family members, feeling guilty, difficulty and school dropout, complications during pregnancy or delivery and risk of
HIV. They regarded abortion as the better pregnancy preventative method and were poorly informed about secondary infertility if abortion is done.
The study identified a number of factors that may influence the use and acceptance of contraceptives by teenagers and that will help in decreasing teenage pregnancy rate. These factors may influence” teenagers‟ behavioural intentions” through altering their perceptions of the personal and social consequences of falling pregnant and their self-efficacy in relation to sexual behaviour. Strategies to promote use of contraceptives should focus on making information on contraception more accessible and offering programmers that empower teenage girls and boys in the area of sexuality. This should also focus on building social capital for teenagers in communities, targeting trans-generational sexual norms, applying the…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Churches have a potential to play a vital role in halting the spread of HIV because they are established in almost all communities. The majority of people believe in their spiritual leaders and obey them; therefore, churches can be a perfect platform to reach out to all communities, both in the urban and rural areas.
The purpose of the study was to investigate HIV and AIDS knowledge in Alleluia Ministries International (AMI) pastoral team. AMI is a church, and it has about 20 branches in and outside South Africa (SA), with the membership estimated at 10,000 in SA. Cultural diversity is one of the strengths of this church as the members are drawn from 11 African countries. The study concentrated on AMI branches in Gauteng Province, including the main church in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg, SA.
The researcher conducted qualitative research method, and fifteen pastors were interviewed. Findings showed that there is a need for HIV and AIDS training programme for the pastors, as only 13% of the participants were able answer the questions correctly. A recommendation was made to the church leadership to consider employing specific training providers such as Lawyers, Epidemiologists, Psychologist, etc, to come and speak to the pastors in order to fill the identified gaps.

▼ Thesis (MPhil (Industrial Psychology. Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management)) – University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research was to identify the effect of poor adherence to treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS. Due to the rise in HIV/AIDS related deaths this study tried to establish whether the support systems of People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWA) are in line with the actual needs of PLWA to adhere to effective treatment therapy. The researcher made use of a semi-structured interview to collect the required information.
The findings of this study shows that certain obstacles prevent PLWA to adhere effectively to treatment and that these patients should be assisted in whatever way to overcome these obstacles to adhere effectively. Effective adherence to treatment therapy should further be enhanced through the implementation of good HIV/AIDS care practice that encourages patient involvement.
