A literatura mostra que o relacionamento entre profissionais da área de Tecnologia da Informação TI e profissionais de outras áreas organizacionais vem sendo motivo de preocupação e objeto de várias pesquisas. Sabe-se que se, por um lado, a área de TI tem reconhecida importância para a inovação de soluções e viabilização de meios que possibilitam às organizações um desempenho cada vez maior e melhor na realização de seus negócios, por outro lado, reconhece-se que esse mesmo desempenho é limitado pela qualidade (sofrível) do relacionamento entre a área de TI e outras áreas das organizações. Mesmo com diversos investimentos em sistemas de comunicação e/ou no redesenho de processos, visando melhorar o relacionamento entre essas áreas, o que se constata é que esse relacionamento continua precário e que a limitação de desempenho antes mencionada continuam insatisfatórios. Essas constatações, conjugadas com a sensação intuitiva de que os comportamentos individuais e organizacionais são condicionados, entre outros aspectos, pelos valores dos indivíduos e das organizações, resultaram, naturalmente, na motivação para a realização deste trabalho. O trabalho teve como objetivo estabelecer uma relação entre as hierarquias de valores da área de TI e de outras áreas organizacionais. Para isso, foi feita uma análise comparativa das hierarquias de valores da área de TI com a de outras áreas. A pesquisa foi fundamentada na premissa de que o relacionamento entre as áreas de uma organização é satisfatório quando suas hierarquias de valores são próximas e é não satisfatório quando suas hierarquias de valores são distantes. Foi objeto desta pesquisa identificar, agrupar e hierarquizar os valores de 578 funcionários de 9 áreas de uma organização de grande porte utilizando questionário elaborado e validado por Schwartz Escala de Valores Pessoais (EVP). A análise dos dados revelou diferenças nas hierarquias de valores entre a área de TI e a média das demais áreas pesquisadas, o que possibilitou concluir que o relacionamento da área de TI com outras áreas organizacionais pode ser influenciado por valores, em razão da característica do perfil obtido para cada um deles estar baseada em motivações opostas. Enquanto a área de Tecnologia prioriza a criação, inovação, novas formas de pensar e de sentir mesmo às custas de erros, a média das outras áreas atribui maior valor ao conservadorismo e o respeito às tradições, normas e usos da sociedade.

▼ The aim of this study is the analysis of social concepts of honor and identity in Paul’s letter to the Philippians. In the first chapter, the research problem is formulated and the appropriate methodology, which could address the issue under investigation, is chosen. It was observed, that in the social studies of the New Testament texts, the key analytical categories – honor, identity and (social) values, – as well as the correlation between them, were not properly defined. At the same time, the text of the letter to the Philippians demonstrates that to aspire for honor is not totally rejected within Christian community (1:20; 2:29; 3:14). The discourse analysis (discovery of social patterns embedded in the text) was taken as main methodological approach; clarifying of social concepts and text analysis were main tools used to test the hypothesis: In his letter to the Philippians, Paul does not argue to reject honor as a social value, yet he promotes a new identity and new source of honor; aspiration to honor within one’s group remains the same for non-Christians and for “heavenly society.” In the second chapter, the main terminology is defined. So, “value” is an often non-verbalized, invisible conception, which determines one’s understanding of the desirable or rationality. The same values can have different embodiments in different cultures; the same values can be shared by different groups. Identity is based on the visible manifestations of a culture; people of different identities can share the same values. Honor is a positive evaluation of one’s behavior; it is very significant for every collectivistic society. The source of honor is at the same time the source of identity: the one whose opinion matters, whose approval is valuable is the one with whom a person associates/identifies him/herself. In the third chapter, the language of identity in the letter to the Philippians is analyzed. Paul pays a lot of attention to his readers’ new identity “in Christ.” He accentuates their distance from the non-members of the group (negative identity); he insists on their unity, mutual support, and call to leave aside any inner quarrel or competitiveness in order to concentrate on the survival and development of the “in-Christ” group. His own example of changed identity demonstrates that Christ gives Paul both a sense of belonging and a sense of worth. Strong orientation of the members of the Christian commune to their group reflects the common dependence of an individual on his/hew group in collectivist societies. In the fourth chapter, the issue of honor in the text of Philippians is investigated. The Christological hymn (Phil 2:6-11) and its context presents the only appropriate way of behavior and hence, gaining honor within the “in-Christ” community: God is the only honor-bestower; one must stay loyal to the community and obedient to its leaders despite suffering and death. Magistro darbo objektas – lyderių savybių kaita istoriniame kontekste. Darbo tikslas – lyderio savybių pokyčiai kūrybingoje grupėje. Pagrindiniai darbo uždaviniai: lyderiavimo sąvokos, ir jos ryšio su vadovavimu apibrėžimas bei įvertinimas; lyderio savybių nustatymas; lyderio savybių pokyčių įvertinimas istoriniame kontekste; kūrybingos visuomenės vadovavimo stilių nustatymas; Lietuvos kūrybinių įmonių vadovų apklausos įvertinimas, siekiant nustatyti, kiek pakito lyderio savybės nuo pramoninės visuomenės iki besiformuojančios dabar kūrybingos visuomenės. Apibendrinant teorinę ir atlikto tyrimo medžiagą, galima teigti, kad kelta prielaida, jog naujų lyderio savybių išskyrimas tiesiogiai siejasi su atitinkamos eros raktiniais žodžiais ir vertybėmis – iš esmės atitinka tikrovę. In the historical process human values and personal features characterizing a human being has been obviously changing. In this thesis we will focus on the development and changing of leadership characteristics in the historical framework analyzing personalities of tribal leaders, hunters, feudal lords, industrialists, enterprise leaders and other authorities in the leadership position. The experience of the Western culture and the United States of America will be analyzed in the theoretical part of the thesis and the examples of the Lithuanian creative enterprises will be presented and examined in the practical part. The aim of this work is to study the historical development of the personal characteristics of creative group leaders. The period from hunters’ society to nowadays knowledge society was chosen for the study emphasizing the developing Creative Class. For exhaustive analysis in the first and the second part of the thesis the theoretical leadership preconditions in the above mentioned societies will be examined concentrating on the leadership conception, leader’s characteristics and the changing of those characteristics through the historical periods. In the practical part of the thesis the evolution of changing leader’s characteristics will be analyzed providing the examples of Lithuanian medium creative enterprises. ▼ The present dissertation investigated cultural differences in the degree and dynamics of prejudice between individual- and group-oriented cultures. In Study 1, in the US where personal responsibility and individual's capitalistic/meritocratic achievements are emphasized, participants reported greater distance to groups based on personal qualities (e.g., heavy drinkers) than in South Korea, and competition for employment was positively associated with prejudice toward various groups (but not in South Korea). In South Korea where the holistic/essential quality, the self-ingroup overlap, and relationships within ingroups are emphasized, participants reported greater distance to groups perceived as essentially different from the majority (e.g., different race) than in the US. In Study 2, the emphasis on individual achievements consistently predicted social hierarchy beliefs in the US (but not in South Korea), whereas the emphasis on roles/positions within ingroups consistently predicted both social and biological hierarchy beliefs in South Korea (but not in the US). In Study 3, the emphasis on individual uniqueness was negatively associated with social distance to non-normative groups (e.g., homosexuals) only in the US, whereas the value of conformity with norms/conventions predicted social distance to low SES (e.g., poor/uneducated/homeless), non-normative, and value-based (e.g., people whose opinions are different from mine in religious issues) target groups both in the US and South Korea. Conformity with norms/conventions also predicted social distance to racial/ethnic outgroups (e.g., non-Koreans to South Korean participants) only in South Korea. In addition, essentialism was associated with social distance to low SES groups in the US, whereas essentialism was associated with social distance to low SES, non-normative, and racial/ethnic groups in South Korea. Overall, the present research provided empirical evidence that cultural norms/values are associated with differences in the degree and dynamics of prejudice between individual- and group-oriented cultures. Life is for us humans a social life. We are constantly in different social communities with various purposes. Throughout life we are part of different groups, for better or worse. The basic social communities, in our society, are the groups we live, work, learn and grow in. This essay deals with the groups children develop and learn in, in school and leisure time center. The intention is to explore how teachers and leisure time pedagogue can work with these groups and what may be the best way to create a good group dynamic and cohesion. The essay is based on three portrayed experiences that are used in a developing process using a distanced discussion and reflective writing. I have found that the attitude and leadership teachers and leisure time pedagogue exercise, against both the individual child and the group, are crucial regarding the group´s functioning and wellbeing. One approach is to work with team building exercises and similar methods which I believe would help improve group cohesion and security. I also see that it is very important for teachers and leisure time pedagogue to think and reflect about how they convey the implied value of education to the children. A critical view and reflective way, of both our self and the function as a whole, I have also found to be important to be able to achieve good group cohesion.

Tillvaron är för oss människor en social tillvaro. Ständigt skapas olika sociala gemenskaper med varierande syften. Vi ingår i olika grupper hela livet igenom, på gott och på ont. De grundläggande sociala gemenskaperna i vårt samhälle är de grupper vi lever, arbetar, lär och utvecklas i. Denna essä behandlar de grupper barn utvecklas och lär i, i skolan och på fritidshemmet. Syftet har varit att undersöka hur lärare och fritidspedagoger kan arbeta med dessa grupper på bästa sätt för att skapa en god gruppdynamik och sammanhållning. Essän tar utgångspunkt i tre gestaltade erfarenheter som används i en utvecklande process med hjälp av en distanserande diskussion och ett reflekterande skrivande. Jag har funnit att det förhållningssätt och ledarskap lärare och fritidspedagoger utövar, gentemot såväl det enskilda barnet som gruppen, är av avgörande vikt gällande gruppens fungerande och välmående. Ett arbetssätt att föra in i verksamheten, som jag anser skulle bidra till en förbättrad gruppsammanhållning och trygghet, är team-building och liknade arbetsätt i form av mycket gemensamma lekar och samarbetsövningar. Jag ser det också av stor vikt att fundera och reflektera över vad lärare och fritidspedagoger förmedlar till barnen genom den implicita värdepedagogiken. Ett kritisk granskande och reflekterande av oss själva såväl som verksamheten i helhet har jag också funnit som betydelsefullt för att uppnå en god gruppsammanhållning.

▼ Social behavior is an important contributor to the success of widely distributed animal taxa, including such distantly related taxa as humans and ants. There is variation in the features and organization of social systems based on ecological constraints and goals, as these alter the costs and benefits of social behaviors, and select for different optimal behaviors for social groups in different environments. I present two bodies of research: an effort to explain geographic variation in the frequency and intensity of human civil conflict; and an effort to describe and model the foraging behavior of colonies of harvester ants of the genus Pogonomyrmex. First, in an investigation of the geographic variation in the frequency of human civil conflict, I show that cross-nationally, intrastate armed conflicts are predicted positively by variation in the intensity of human infectious disease. I present a theoretical model to explain this variation that proposes that risk of exposure to novel infectious diseases imposes costs on intergroup social interaction, and in regions with high intensity of infectious disease these costs create relative poverty and exacerbate conflict over resources. Second, I show that infectious disease predicts other categories of civil conflict, including clan wars, and revolutions and coups. I present a path analysis of the global peace index to test the plausibility of the hypothesized model, including the various indirect effects linking infectious disease to conflict; this analysis supports the importance of the relationship between infectious disease and conflict cross-nationally. Third, I present the results of a study using a computer model of host-parasite coevolution to examine the mechanisms by which localized host-parasite coevolutionary races impose fitness costs on host intergroup interaction, and lead to the evolution of out-group avoidance in mating decisions. In the fourth chapter I present a field study of the foraging behavior of three sympatric species of harvester ants, and their response to variation in heterogeneity in the distribution of foods. Fifth, I present a computer model of ant colony foraging behavior, which I optimized using genetic algorithms for different distributions of food, and whose resulting foraging behavior I compare to the previous observations of harvester ants in the field. ▼ Senate Bill 6 was passed by the 82nd Texas Legislature in the summer of 2011. This bill shifted the procedure for distribution of textbooks from an adoption-based distribution system to an allotment system. The purpose of this study was to document the rapid change in policy, establishing the legislative intent of the bill and analyzing the bill’s implementation at the local level. Four research questions guided the investigation and included: (1) What was the legislative intent of Senate Bill 6?; (2) How were decisions made within three local school districts regarding implementation of Senate Bill 6?; (3) How was Senate Bill 6’s intent addressed at the local level?; and (4) How has the Instructional Materials Allotment changed the political climate in schools and communities? A qualitative case study was conducted using the constant comparative method as first developed by Glaser and Strauss and recently adapted by Boeije. The investigation included a main case study, which represented the intent of Senate Bill 6, and an embedded case study, which represented the bill’s implementation in three local school districts. Theoretical foundations for this study included Wirt, Mitchell and Marshall’s theory of political values, which include efficiency, equity, quality, and choice; implementation theory as described by Goggin; and issues of local control from a variety of perspectives. Four overall themes were established which include: (1) content versus delivery of content; (2) the locals know best; (3) the rapid pace of technology advancement in education; and (4) this is our money. Analysis of these themes indicates that the Texas Legislature chose to surrender control of the textbook selection process to local school district personnel in exchange for efficiency, and left quality and equity to be determined largely by local decision makers. The closing discussion identifies the nascent struggles associated with the allocation of power, authority and fiduciary responsibility that are an intricate part of implementing Senate Bill 6. The increased politicization of education has made the apportionment of these resources even more poignant, as it simultaneously raises the stakes for both legislators and school district administrators. This study identifies specific implications for both policy makers and local school district leaders as they navigate issues of local control. Face aux mouvements actuels dits de « désinstitutionalisation » et en référence aux propositions de nombreux auteurs faisant état de la faillite des métacadres et du mal-être contemporain, cette thèse se veut une étude et une exploration de ce qui persiste et survit de l'institution au quotidien dans les établissements du soin et du travail social. À partir de la clinique des pouponnières à caractère social, considérées comme des analyseurs potentiels et pertinents, nous avons proposé dans ce travail trois visions différentes mais complémentaires de l'institution et de ce qui fait institution en et pour chacun, collectivement et individuellement. Nous proposons ainsi de penser : - L'institution-environnement - L'institution comme un groupe - L'institution et les valeurs instituantes. Dans chacune de ces déclinaisons, nous avons travaillé les articulations à l’œuvre entre les sujets et les groupes, les réalités matérielles et psychiques, les imaginaires individuels et collectifs, etc. Nous avons également tenté de proposer des dépassements de certaines oppositions conceptuelles afin de promouvoir une pensée des articulations et maintenir un raisonnement processuel. À partir d'une épistémologie principale basée sur la psychanalyse des groupes, des familles et des institutions, nous nous sommes inscrit dans une recherche clinique qualitative intégrant et analysant les implications du chercheur à/dans ses terrains d'étude. Le recueil de données a été réalisé au sein de deux pouponnières durant une période de 3 mois pour chacune, avec une présence effective de deux jours par semaine minimum. Pour chacun de ces terrains d'étude, un dispositif méthodologique original a été conçu pour allier différentes sources de données (observation participante du quotidien institutionnel, observation des pratiques professionnelles dans les unités de vie, observation des réunions institutionnelles, entretiens individuels semi-directifs avec les professionnels des différents corps de métiers, lecture et analyse de documents institutionnels). La démarche de recherche a également bénéficié des apports d'une supervision individuelle afin de dégager et d'utiliser les ressentis, attitudes et contre-attitudes du chercheur au profit du recueil et de l'analyse des données. Parallèlement aux deux terrains d'étude, cette thèse a été réalisée dans le cadre d'une Convention Industrielle de Formation par la REcherche (CIFRE) avec l'Observatoire National de la Protection de l'Enfance (ONPE, anciennement Oned). À partir de l'analyse de scènes et pratiques quotidiennes, les résultats de ce travail se veulent à la fois des apports complémentaires aux théorisations et conceptualisations déjà existantes, ainsi qu'aux pratiques de terrain déjà à l’œuvre. Si elles sont résolument ancrées dans le champ spécifique des terrains d'étude (les pouponnières et la protection de l'enfance), nous pensons toutefois que les propositions peuvent éclairer aussi avec pertinence l'ensemble des secteurs médico-sociaux.

▼ As part of their medical education, a student medic needs to develop the thinking and values essential to practice. This is so they can be the best doctor that they are able: to serve their clients, their profession and the societies in which they work. However, helping a student develop their thinking and values in the classroom can be difficult. This difficulty can be as a result of many factors, some related to a teacher’s practice. For example, a medical teacher might try to develop a student’s thinking under the remit of developing critical thinking, but the convoluted debate and complex literature about critical thinking can mean a student is confused about what the teacher means. A teacher might also use a proven teaching method such as discussion, but one that might cause a student to experience fear or anxiety such that the student disengages from learning. A teacher who uses a similar teaching method and aims to develop a student’s values can also experience difficulties. In this case, the difficulty might be because values can be a sensitive, highly personal topic and challenging for a student to discuss. A teacher who aims to cultivate student thinking or values might also experience a lack of specific pedagogical guidance about how to teach for this in the classroom. The pursuit of a solution for these problems was the main objective of the current thesis. I use a framework drawn from Barnett’s (1997) ideas about critical thinking, critical action and critical being, which I developed into the theory of Critical Being (Blakey, 2011; 2014). In the current thesis I extend this pursuit to develop and test ideas about how a medical teacher might educate for Critical Being. I used a year-long action research project in the context of small group teaching on an MBChB (degrees in medicine) programme with self-selected teacher participants who wished to improve their practice. Results showed that better cultivating student thinking and values as part of this theory might depend on what a teacher does, how they do it, and who they are: for some students, a teacher needed to use specific language about the thinking they wish to cultivate; for others, a teacher also needed to act well to manage the students’ emotion about learning, or manage their own emotion if the student was ‘difficult’. I also found that cultivating a student’s thinking might also depend, for some, on a teacher’s own values such as caring and their valuing of the teaching method they use, process (e.g. reflective thinking) or topic which they teach. Results have potential implications for medical teacher practice, how an institution might support a medical teacher in practice and how they might be selected for employment. ▼ The aim of this African culturally based research is to establish whether a group of unmarried pregnant teenage girls experience rejection during their period of pregnancy as well as to determine whether they experienced rejection for whatever reason before falling pregnant. Seen in the context of the communal and person-centred life view as upheld by the African culture where respect for and well-being of the individual within the tribal and extended family structure is paramount, one would expect that unmarried girls finding themselves in a precarious situation such as premature pregnancy would experience understanding, acceptance and support. The research is quantitative as well as qualitative. The quantitative research focuses on 341 grade 11-leamers at seven secondary schools in the Free State Province of Education as well as in the Gauteng Department of Education. Questionnaires were presented with the aim of establishing the reason for teenage pregnancy; to research the thoughts, feelings and actions of the peer group toward pregnant teenage girls; to determine the presence of feelings of rejection of a group of pregnant teenage girls at the same schools; to determine the thoughts the girls have about themselves as well as about the future. On account of the fact that that the responses of the pregnant girls seemingly contradicted the responses given by the grade 11-peer group sample it was decided to supplement the quantitative research result with a qualitative research investigation by means of focus group interviews conducted with twelve willing to participate pregnant girls at two ofthe secondary schools who voluntarily agreed to participate. The research result indicates that although the pregnant girls did not experience rejection before falling pregnant they did however experience rejection after falling pregnant, especially from the peer group at school, educators, and certain sections of society. Although the parents of these girls were initially offended and reluctant, their attitude toward the pregnancy changed to include acceptance and even support.

▼ A new form of sociality is developing among Chinese youth: an Elastic Self. Changes in social media's capacity to mediate information and interaction is creating new spaces for youth to shift the norms and behaviors of social relations in China in three ways: from self-restraint to self-expression, from comradeship to friendship, and from a "moral me" to a "moral we." These changes have potentially transformative power for Chinese society as a whole because they are altering the way that people perceive and engage with each other on personal and social levels. Under semianonymous conditions, Chinese youth are able to bypass the low levels of trust hat characterize authoritarian societies and adopt broader forms of social trust that characterize more participatory societies. These new forms of trust enable them to engage in citizenship practices that expand the public sphere through online debates that, on occasion, connect to offline civic participation. Before they can do this, however, youth must pass through two critical phases – Exploratory and Trusting – during which they learn how to share information with and socialize with strangers in a low-risk context. Interactions with strangers provide Chinese youth with social distance from people they know, thereby minimizing the anxiety of being shamed for acting inappropriately. While the West often characterizes China as a repressive surveillance state, my research reveals that Chinese youth are finding ways to connect to each other and to establish a web of casual trust that extends beyond particularistic guanxi ties and authoritarian institutions. For the most part, youth are discovering their social world, not a social cause. In doing so, youth are building the infrastructure of a civil society by establishing friendships with one another through relationships that start out between strangers. To be clear, this new form of sociality gives youth a way to navigate Chinese society, not to disconnect from or rebel against it. This new sociality is laying the groundwork for a public sphere to emerge from social ties primarily based on friendship

The main purpose of the dissertation is the thorough study of the ways in which cultural diversity is protected and promoted in the European space. The analysis is based on two pillars: the first part of the study attempted to determine the content and the degree of legitimacy of the concept of cultural diversity through the traits derived from the constitutional values and principles of the European Union. The second part investigated the protection of cultural diversity through international and European human rights law and sought the main components for establishing a right to cultural identity.The law of the European Union is the sedes materiae of the study, since cultural diversity is a request that emerges from the "common system of values of the Union". Therefore, the policies discussed cover the official European policy through the adoption of legislative acts as well as the actions of Member States, in order to investigate the convergence of the Union policy with those of Member States and to reflect the implementation of the legal framework in practice. However, the use of other jurisdictions that make up the "European constitutional space", such as the European Convention of Human Rights and international human rights law, as well as the reference to foreign law, such as the law of the USA and Canada, where necessary for the appropriate interpretation and a more comprehensive survey of the subject.The research concludes that, at the current stage of EU law development, respect for cultural diversity is a lex imperfecta which operates only as a simple guiding principle without clear sanctions in case of violation, and its content is determined in accordance with other rules in order to produce a legal effect, the meaning of which nevertheless is reinforced. Moreover, the existing system of fundamental rights protection, which highlights the importance of the cultural dimension of human rights and cultural rights, together with the recognition of cultural diversity as an important element of human dignity, provides adequate protection for a person’s cultural identity. Therefore, the introduction of a right to cultural identity in international law is not necessary. However, within the European Union law, where the protection of cultural identity appears to be non-systematic, the gradual emergence of an autonomous right would contribute to more effective protection of cultural diversity. The peculiarity of this right, which distinguishes it from other fundamental rights, lies in the fact that it can be considered as intermediate between individual rights and group rights, resulting in both individuals and different cultural communities be benefited from it.

▼ Nos últimos anos percebe-se um renovado interesse das pessoas pelo aspecto espiritual da experiência humana, e um grande número de pessoas tem assumido a importância da espiritualidade e da religião em suas vidas. Psicologia e religião, que por um longo período andaram distanciadas, se reencontram como dois campos distintos do saber que podem ser complementares para a promoção do bem estar do ser humano. A prática clínica tem mostrado que para as famílias que praticam uma religião, essa dimensão religiosa nas suas vidas é tão importante quanto a dimensão física, estética, intelectual, social ou afetiva. No entanto, pouca atenção tem sido dada a esse aspecto no processo de terapia em geral. Na terapia familiar a questão da espiritualidade tem sido mais ressaltada nos últimos anos com a publicação de inúmeros artigos e livros abordando essa questão. A família adolescente experiencia nessa fase uma significativa mudança na sua estrutura e organização e todos devem se readaptar ás novas tarefas e papéis. Na família cristã, além das questões normais da adolescência, os pais se preocupam com a escolha religiosa dos seus filhos, que pode afetar não só a vida aqui como também a sua vida eterna. O objetivo deste trabalho foi compreender a influência da religião na relação pais e filhos na fase adolescente em famílias cristãs não clínicas e assim fornecer subsídios para que o profissional que venha a trabalhar com essas famílias possa compreendê-as a partir de sua visão de mundo. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa utilizando a técnica de grupo focal com grupos de pais de adolescentes e grupos de filhos adolescentes de três religiões cristãs: católica, batista e adventista do sétimo dia. A pesquisa trouxe como resultado que a religião participa em todos os aspectos da vida das famílias pesquisadas. Essas famílias têm nos valores religiosos o fio condutor de sua dinâmica e funcionamento familiar. As práticas religiosas de oração, leitura da Bíblia e participação em missas e cultos religiosos favorecem a coesão e harmonia familiar. A relação pais e filhos demonstra ser tranqüila com muitas trocas afetivas, conversas e compreensão de ambos os lados, o que é creditado à influência religiosa na vida, tanto dos pais quanto dos filhos. O aspecto que mais se destaca nessas famílias é a inclusão de Deus como membro do sistema familiar, o que pode ser um valioso recurso de conforto, proteção e orientação para os membros da família Advisors/Committee Members: Ceneide Maria de Oliveira Cerveny.

▼ The main objective of this research was to establish a model for emotional intelligence as a determinant of organisational climate. This model should help companies and organisational psychologists to better understand the interrelatedness of the two constructs in order to optimally enhance organisational performance. This research was conducted in a large organisation, utilising a large sample (n = 1 612) of employees in the financial services industry. During the first phase of this research, emotional intelligence was conceptualised from literature research within the trait paradigm and organisational climate as a molar construct. A theoretical model of emotional intelligence as a determinant of organisational climate was developed and suggested a link to organisational output. During the second phase of this research (empirical research), assessment instruments for emotional intelligence (the Gerber Emotional Intelligence Scale) and organisational climate (the High Performance Climate Questionnaire) were developed and validated. Thereafter an assessment instrument for work output was designed to test the link with performance. The structural equation model (SEM) produced a new best-fitting model of emotional intelligence, organisational climate and work output. The model indicates that emotional intelligence does not correlate with work output as expected, but organisational climate does correlates moderately with work output and explains almost 40% of the variance in work output. The strongest influence seems to flow from teamwork and management. The regression weights between emotional intelligence and organisational climate were trivial, although the model fit indices were all within an acceptable range. The researcher attributed the lack of support for the model to the characteristics of the employees of this type of organisation and concluded that emotional intelligence should not be seen as a determinant of organisational climate in this specific financial services sector. The results further indicate that significant differences exist between the organisational climate experiences of four biographical categories (race, position level, age and geographical region) and also for the categories of position level and age for work output. These differences need to be considered when developing future interventions. This research contributes towards a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between emotional intelligence, organisational climate and work output. The three newly developed questionnaires and the SEM could help researchers and practitioners to apply the research model in other industries and subsequently improve organisational outputs. Nowadays, people buy goods not only for their usefulness but also for what they represent. A lot of consumer purchases are in fact a way for them to express themselves, show their desires and highlight their identity. People assign particular meanings to their acquisitions and shape their self-views through them, which is a very important behaviour since it can be used as a compass to their lives. A great deal of identity associations occur through brands as people embrace brands' identities as their own. For that reason, brands and institutions can use the effect of a threat to influence consumers' self-views in ways that can affect their overall experience. Therefore, this study investigates to which extent the effects of the threat and group identity can influence consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP), purchase intentions (PI) and expected pleasure (EP). The setting for this study is the alcoholic industry, in particular the beer industry. Beer consumers are studied concerning the effects that threat and group identity have on their overall experience regarding the purchase of beer and its consumption. An experimental study was conducted, which had a total of 404 participants. The analysis of the results showed that the effect of the threat and group identity had the greatest and significant impact on the WTP. As for the PI and EP there was no statistical evidence to back up the effect of the threat and identity, nonetheless, the results showed some promising implications.

Hoje em dia, as pessoas compram bens não só pela sua utilidade, mas também pelo seu valor simbólico. Muitas das compras feitas pelo consumidor são na realidade uma forma de este se expressar e destacar a sua identidade. É recorrente observar que as pessoas atribuem significado às suas aquisições e moldam-se através delas. Este comportamento é relevante dado porque é usado pelo consumidor como bússola que orienta o seu estilo de vida. Grande parte das associações entre a aquisição de produtos/serviços e a identidade dos consumidores é estabelecida pelas marcas e, posteriormente, apropriada pelos primeiros. Por essa razão, marcas e instituições podem utilizar a “ameaça” para influenciar as opiniões dos consumidores de forma a afetar a sua experiência de compra. Este estudo tem como objetivo estudar o efeito que a “ameaça” e a “identidade” têm sobre a predisposição de pagamento, a intenção de compra e o prazer associado à compra. Adotamos como cenário a indústria cervejeira. São assim os consumidores de cerveja o grande alvo desta dissertação e, consequentemente, os efeitos que a “ameaça” e a “identidade” têm sobre eles, no quadro da sua experiência de consumo e compra de cerveja. Foi elaborado um estudo experimental (ES) que contou com um total de 404 participantes. Após análise do mesmo foi possível concluir que o efeito da “ameaça” e da “identidade” tiveram o maior impacto (e relevância estatística) na predisposição a pagar.
